Book Description

Firekeeper only vaguely remembers a time when she didn't live with her "family," a pack of "royal wolves"-bigger, stronger, and smarter than normal wolves. Now her pack leaders are sending her back to live among the humans, as they promised her mother years ago. Some of the humans think she may be the lost heir to their throne. This could be good-and it could be very, very dangerous. In the months to come, learning to behave like a human will turn out to be more complicated than she'd ever imagined. But though human ways might be stranger than anything found in the forest, the infighting in the human's pack is nothing Firekeeper hasn't seen before. That, she understands just fine. She's not your standard-issue princess-and this is not your standard-issue fairy tale.

3 out of 5 stars Sub-par Fantasy Romp.......2007-07-03

"Through Wolf's Eyes" really was a hard book to get through, and not because of its fat length. I kept on putting it away, then reading through it and skimming mostly everything, then deciding to get serious and actually read every bit, word for word. Before I give you my honest review, I also read all of the books in the Firekeeper Series (save Wolf's Blood) so I can tell you whether or not the insane amount of characters in the first book will ever be useful in the series.

My conclusion: no.

Before I get started with that, let me give you the basic plotline. Long ago, Prince Barden, son of King Tedric the First, decided to get away from all of the hierarchy and political mess and start a new life with his wife and headed out into the Iron Mountains, a place inhabitant by Royal animals--smarter, stronger, and bigger than normal animals, and devoid of any human conquest. Along with Price Barden, others decided to follow and opened up their civilization, "Bardenville". Of course, after a careless fire, all of them died except for their daughter. Spoiler: She is not Barden's daughter, Blysse, but actually Tamara, a child of no royal importance, but no one knows that but King Tedric himself.

Of course, the daughter, now Firekeeper, was saved after being raised by wolves, but it's never clear on what the voice in her head is in the story until you read the fourth book in the series, `Wolf Captured'. But that's for another review...

Anyway, Firekeeper is founded by a group of the King's scouts, whose job is to see which of Barden's group is still alive. After seeing that Firekeeper could be Tedric's long lost granddaughter, they whisk her to the kingdom to teach her human society. As you can see, this is the big highlight of the novel. But Firekeeper does not travel alone. Along with her at all times is her wolf `brother', a blue-eyed male named Blind Seer.

The Royal animals part is a nice twist, but for all of their intelligence, it's hard to believe why they don't know how to climb up ladders. Weird inconstancies like that sometimes make me laugh.

Blind Seer is an okay character, but is just as much of a cardboard cutout as the other characters in the story. None of them will ever be important in the whole Firekeeper series, yet Jane Lindskold devoid many pages to them. The only ones who are really slightly important are Melina Shield and her brood. Melina Shield is also somewhat of an important character because in half of the book is mostly about how she could hold magical powers, which is bad, considering in the society they're all in, magic is bad and also, nonexistent in over 100 years.

Firekeeper is shoved aside so these characters can take a shine after the first part. That is where everything mostly falls to hell.

The evil protagonist is laughable, and not even a threat at all since we are able to dig into his mind and read every single evil plot he wishes to throw. It's boring. We don't need to know this. It spoils the moment. You hardly bat an eye at his death, and if you think he's gone for good, wait till you hit book two. The protagonist there is even worse, and like the protagonist here, you are able to glimpse every single evil plan he whips up.

The one thing that makes it worse than the ridiculous amount of useless characters is the language itself. It sounds as though everyone swallowed a thesaurus, and the children do not sound like children at all.

Derian Carter, the teenager who is mostly Firekeeper's caretaker and translator, will prove to be the most useless character out of the entire series. He is just there as Firekeeper's annoying friend, and it shows as the series go on.

The book has potential, but it's good for a one time read, and it would have been a lot better if the book didn't drone on about politics and characters that will never make an impact or be noticed until the book ends. Please check it out at your local library first.

5 out of 5 stars Very immersive and enjoyable.......2007-05-21

While magic and action are not as prominent as I usually like, I found this to be very believable and completely immersive. This author describes her world and her characters incredibly well. She made me really care about the protaganists.

4 out of 5 stars Very Different.......2006-12-26

This isn't your typical fantasy. Typically, you have a young adult that discovers that they are more than they thought they were and are forced to undertake a quest to find something to deter or defeat someone/something evil. Instead of one character who is the protagonist, Jane develops a group of characters that each have unique characters, but each seems to be as important as any of the the others. She also allows her characters to grow and change as experiences affect them. If you are looking for sword fights and powerful magical talents, find another book. If you want a well written and entertaining story, this is your book.

5 out of 5 stars Great read.......2006-03-04

This was an excellent book that I would recommend to anyone that likes to read fantasy-styled books. I would even suggest this to a few others, even if they don't like fantasy. It goes by quickly, but you can still feel the passage of time while reading the book. Jane Linskold really did a wonderful job on this story.

5 out of 5 stars A Wolf Advocate/Lover's Dream Novel!.......2006-03-01

10 stars! too bad they dont let you put that! If you're pro-wolf, anti-"BIG BAD WOLF" (heehee me) you'll love this book! Even if you just love a great fantasy novel series you'll find yourself reading the whole series non-stop forget to do things you promised yourself to do because you were so deep into the book! My favorite book series along with the Julie of the Wolves series by Jean Craighead George. Please Read you'll love the books I promise! Love the Character glossary, map and family tree really helps with the complex storyline. Read the stories when I was 12 and 13 but readers from tweens to adult will all love these stories.
The first book is set in a different land in the mountains of Iron Mountains. At the foot of the mountains on the coast are the five nations of Waterland, New Kelvin, Hawk Haven, Bright Bay, and Stonehold. Settlers including a prince from Hawk Haven once settled over the mountains but the settlement was destroyed by fire. All were killed- except one.
The animals of the land are split in two- Royal and Cousins. The royal animals are much larger and have a complex yet natural society were deer and wolves can chat about the weather if they wanted to without predator-prey instincts kickin in. One of the Royal Wolf Packs witnessed the massacre of a fire. One little girl they saved, one girl they gave the gift of the language of the animals, that girl they called Firekeeper for her amazing gift to control fire.
Years later, the king is old his children have all died, he has no heir to the throne and he does not know what had become of his son that settled across the mountains. A small group cross the mountains to search for the prince or an heir but find the fate of the small settlement. Firekeepers' [wolf] parents tell her to go to the humans, learn their ways, and if she doesn't like it to come back. Her wolf brother Blind Seer and a peregrine falcon Elation join her to find the humans and live with them.
Firekeeper starts to learn the ways of humans once she finds herself among them (the humans dont take the size of her friends too well) and finds the consept of war and lying.
But while she is learning, she finds the truth of her wolves and other royals in ways she couldn't believe- could her wolves know the concept of lying? she couldn't accept it.
On top of it all, the court of Hawk Haven believe she is the daughter of the missing Prince. Is she? Is she Princess Blyss?
Firekeeper gets stuck between the wolf and human worlds. Was it her destiny? Was her destiny chosen by her wolves? Will she ever remember her childhood as a human?
"She cannot be permitted to die. We need her. Someday someone must speak our talks. Cross between worlds. Seperation forever is impossibe."
Love, Royal Drama, Cross species conflict, war, treason, and wolves, don't ya love it all!

5 out of 5 stars if you are open to paradigm shifts.......2005-06-03

This book appears to have not been edited at all. It took me a few pages to get past all the typos; I mean seriously, a LOT of them. But then you realize it really flows. Some of the typos are actually creative wordings. Even though they appear at first to be mistakes, they are purposeful and add to the free and creative spirit of the book. In a way, I suppose having all the mistakes and creative use of new words is a functional part of helping to facilitate the mind to shift. If it was all tightly written, it would definitely have a different feel, and the message would come through differently, and perhaps not in quite the right way, if that makes any sense. The content itself is fantastic. I found it enlightening, yet simple to understand. It pulls you in and takes you through, and you find yourself just following. But it is also provocative and it makes you think. You still have to decide and figure it out for yourself! What I love about it is, it gives real information, that to me makes more sense than almost anything I've ever heard. I frequently felt pulled back into the thoughts and feelings of my childhood, to a time when I sensed what was real, before it all got skewed by family and societal conditioning. Also, I have read many books in all the areas of spirituality and self-help, and this seemed to pull it all together. It brings it all right down to the very essence. In some ways, I feel that all the books I have previously read prepped me and helped me to easily digest and integrate the ideas in the book. On the other hand, you could read just this book alone, and get the same basic idea that all the other books are trying to convey, but without all those other (now seemingly) unnecessary details.

Dark Epics has all the information a Storyteller needs to manage a LARP. Although I run a small game, this book is still a major resource.

The book includes an extended weapons list, rules for managing lores and influences and tips for organizing game and delegating responsibilities.

I highly recommend this book for Storytellers.

5 out of 5 stars A mix of historical and present day.......2007-09-18

Margaret Coel has written another book that is a nice balance of historical information and present day life on the Windy River Reservation. In this book, she concentrates on the Bates Battle that occured in the late 19th century. It was a war between the Shoshones and the Arapahos, and nothing was ever the same for either tribe again. When the book opens it appears to Father John that someone is trying to recreate this infamous battle when he is directed by an annonymous voice on a tape to the site of the battle. When he gets there he discovers three executed Shoshones. These murders open up a can of worms between the two tribes again which could break out into bloodshed and tear open old wounds. The story is a cliff-hanger from beginning to end, and will keep you on the edge of your seat while you wait for Father John and Vicky Holden to figure out what actually happened. This is a truly wonderful series and I love every book!

4 out of 5 stars Historical Arapaho mystery.......2007-08-14

The Eye of the Wolf is another Father John O'Malley and Vickie Holden murder mystery.

The last major Arapahoe battle took place in Bates Canyon. An early morning attack was mounted against the village while the members were peacefully sleeping. Many of them were killed before the warriors were able to slip away, gain the mountainside and try to protect their homes and families.

Now bodies are found on the battle scene, bodies that have been positioned to resemble the old tintypes appearing in many books from that era. Vickie Holden's defendant, Frankie Montana, was seen arguing with the three men whose bodies were later found at the Bates Battlefield. Vickie is a close friend of Frankie's mother and, although not convinced of Frankie's innocence, still feels obligated to defend him.

This story again develops the relationship between Father John and Vickie Holden. It also deepens the beginning relationship between Vickie and Adam Lone Wolf.

I enjoy this series, Margaret Coel's knowledge of the Arapaho Indians is impressive and she always tells an interesting story. Her background is an integral part of the novel, she sets her scenes very carefully and they help create the feeling of crime and destitution.

predictable, lots of words which take up a lot of pages. could have been eye candy, but fell short.

Father John O'Malley and Vicky Holden are at it again. They're both involved in another murder mystery that will have an effect on the well being of the whole tribe. A suspect has been arrested and Vicky is defending him, but is he the murderer?

The murder victims are Shoshones, members of the other tribe that shares the Wind River Reservation with the Arapahos. If the culprit isn't brought to justice soon warfare could break out between the two tribes who are ancient enemies.

Vicky and John's feelings for each other haven't changed. The new assistant priest is on to them and threatens to expose Father O'Malley to the bishop. Will this be the end of the Jesuit's time at the mission? Read it and find out. This is a great series and Margaret Coel is one of my favorite authors.

Very good in the sequel line, but I figured out "who dun it" before I finished. The characters are still developing well, waiting for the next one. I have the whole series.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorites!!!.......2004-06-24

Eye of the Wolf is a very interesting book. It told lots of different stories which ended up coming together in the end. I liked how the boy closed one of his eyes to make the wolf not feel sad. I also like how the boy could talk to animals and had relationships with all different kinds of animals from camels to wolves and cheetahs. The wolf's story was sad but ended up happy at the end. He lost his family in the wild and then lost his zoo family, too. But the boy became his friend and helped the wolf feel better. I recommend this book for everyone!! (The illustrations in the book are terrific and capture what is going on in the story!)

      5 out of 5 stars A Unique Storytelling Experience--Not to be missed!.......2003-10-21

Africa has a story to tell, and so does the wolf he visits every day at the zoo. At first, the wolf is annoyed by Africa's constant visits to his cage. He wonders why he is there and what he is looking for, so he stares back at Africa, challenging him to leave and let the wolf return to his loneliness.

But by looking into each other's eyes, the two are able to understand each other's stories and recognize how their lives relate to one another.

The wolf's story is about the family that he lost-his mother, sisters, and brothers-and how he came to live behind the cage at the zoo as a sacrifice to his sister. Africa's story is about the loss of his family and his life as an orphan, a shepherd, and now finally an adopted boy with a last name. But when told simultaneously, the stories suddenly become about looking for home, about being needed, and about being important and meaningful, no matter where you are.

What a unique storytelling adventure! The meeting between Africa and Blue Wolf is an unfamiliar way to open a story, and the reader is almost tempted to set down the book. But soon enough, Pennac creates an interaction between the two that is magical and enchanting and that leads the reader into two dynamic worlds.

There is an unexpected depth to Africa's existance, and his mystical ways with animals is a brilliant contrast to the very human emotions of Blue Wolf. As Blue Wolf tells his story of daring rescue and escape, he becomes a powerful reminder of all that is beautiful in nature. There was no way to anticipate the manner in which all the characters come together in the end or the final power that Africa and Blue Wolf have upon each other, but it is fascinating, indeed. The language is specific and flows beautifully together as an extension of Africa's famous storytelling abilities.

5 out of 5 stars So beautiful and poignant - Not only for children.......2003-02-22

I read the book in other language, i.e. Korean, and with other
illustration. However, this is a really beautiful story whatever language it is written in. There is an wolf who has been captured by men and put into a zoo. When he was caught, his one eye was injured, but he didn't mind because he decided that one eye is sufficient to see the sad, miserable world of men-to his eye, men are as sad and miserable as the captured animals in the zoo. There is a boy from Africa who stands in front of the wolf and look at him directly in his one remaining eye. He himself has been through a lat of sad incidents all over the Africa - in yellow, grey, and green ones. What do they see each other's eyes ? How does the wolf change his mind and accept there are something even in this miserable world worth watching with two eyes ? It's a so beautiful and poignant story (and I don't want to spoil your chance to find it^^), worth reading over and over again.

          Book Description

This second volume of the Moving Middle Schools series provides a picture of teachers with the courage to invest in a well chosen generative topic for the sake of enhancing students' mathematical power. It demonstrated how by concentrating on the concept of "functions," teachers can lay a foundation for two essential mathematical understandings: the ability to model real-world phenomena mathematicallyto develop what the contributors call "math eyes"and the capacity to create graphic, linguistic, and numerical representations of mathematical information.

Through Mathematical Eyes offers revealing stories of how this generative curriculum plays out in diverse classrooms ranging from rural Maine to urban San Francisco. Through the vivid stories of classroom teachers, we see students relating math and science as they explore the effects of smoking on lung capacity, the question of sleeping fish, and the properties of magnets. We see teachers openly confronting the controversies and struggles involved in teaching complex concepts to students who sometimes lack strong computational skills. Most of all we see teachers and students engaging in real conversations about powerful learning and teaching.

In this volume, teachers will find concrete examples of unit plans, classroom activities, and assessment practices to use in their own teaching or in discussions with colleagues. Teachers will also find practical information about the conceptual nature of functions and the critical role functions play in math, science, and daily life. As a vehicle for professional development, Through Mathematical Eyes is an excellent resource for prompting both personal reflection and professional discussion.
