Book Description
Only her love could gentle his savage soul—
He was born to a clan of warriors of supernatural strength, but Gavrael McIllioch abandoned his name and his Highland castle, determined to escape the dark fate of his ancestors. Hiding his identity from the relentless rival clan that hunted him, he called himself Grimm to protect the people he cared for, vowing never to acknowledge his love for ravishing Jillian St. Clair. Yet even from afar he watched over her, and when her father sent an urgent summons, "Come for Jillian," he raced to her side—into a competition to win her hand in marriage.
Why had he run from her so many years before? And why return now to see her offered as a prize in her father's manipulative game? Furious, Jillian vowed never to wed. But Grimm was the man she loved, the one who urged her to marry another. He tried to pretend indifference as she tempted him, but he could not deny the fierce desires that compelled him to abduct her from the altar. She was the only woman who could tame the beast that raged within him—even as deadly enemies plotted to destroy them both....

Flying Kilts oh MY!!!.......2007-02-17
Tis a Scotland trip of love and saddness and more excitement than any Bray Wee Lass could handle.
Compelling and mythical romance.......2006-07-28
This is the second book in the Highlander series. It will definitely go in my special pile of keeper books to be re-read. Karen Marie Moning writes stories that cativate the reader and it is difficult to put the book down.
I enjoyed reading about Grimm, a berserker (this supernatural entity is explained in the book - I didn't know what it was before). He is tortured from his past and becomes a loner until he meets Jillian. She is his perfect soul mate and willing to help him accept who he is and who he can become. Great ending and delicious romance story!
Slow start - predictable ending.......2006-05-22
The story of Grimm and Jillian. Grimm we first meet in Beyond the Highland Mist, where he has a minor roll. Here we learn Grimm's story. Grimm is a Berserker, a race of legenday Scottish warriors. Not understanding what he is, and believing it will lead him to madness and possibly murder Grimm spends years running from himself and a clan, the McKanes, that has vowed to hunt and destroy the line of warriors. Enter Jillian, Grimm's true mate. He however is afraid he will bring her nothing but pain and death and pushes her away at every opportunity. The first half of the book is simply Grimm's struggle with accepting who he is and Jillian's love. I really feared this would be the whole book as it was somewhat boring and predictable. You know she will eventually win.
The book really didn't get interesting until about half way through. At this point, Grimm and Jillian ride off to face their real threat, the McKanes. After wasting half the book on the struggle between Jillian and Grimm, Moning glosses over the fight between the McKanes and the Berserkers. There are a number of questions left unanswered, several sections I felt could have been expanded on and the ending was a let down. Not that they don't win, but all you have is a Grimm saves Jillian, then they beat the McKanes, literally that is pretty much what she wrote. While I am not wanting bloody details, I would have like the climax to have been a little more climactic.
While this book is not directly related to the Dark Highlander's series, references to Adam Black are made. I do not know if Moning plans to tie the Berserkers into the final battle she seems to be building to in the Dark Highlander series, but it could be an interesting addition.
To tame a highland warrior.......2006-03-16
In this sequel to Beyond the highland mist, we follow Grimm. The tales of Berzerkers is novel and compelling. I look forward to another novel by Karen Marie Moning
Not her best,but still a treat.......2006-03-10
Of all the books that I have read by K. Moning this is the least exciting. I enjoy her dark and torn characters and the way they are brought to life with detail. This book did not seem to come to life for me. Overall, it is a great read but, not as edgy as her other books

Nice Read.......2007-08-15
This was a good highlander/warrior book.
Ross agrees to marry Gillian (a warrior, too) in an effort to bring peace to the two clans. The problems begin.
It's been recapped enough, so that's all I'll say.
If you enjoy Connie Mason, you will like this one for sure!
Over, Over Rated.......2007-07-03
This was a major disappointment and put Connie Mason on my "Authors to Avoid" list. Convoluted and manipulative story telling with no natural flow to the characters or the story. The author doesn't allow you to feel, she's busy telling you what to feel (rather like one's mother talking at you). Even at the end of the book the author tells you she hopes you enjoyed her story of enduring love, etc. A real turn off. If you want to read a great story about a great warrior I highly recommend Royce Westmoreland in Judith McNaught's "A Kingdom of Dreams". Royce is hard to beat, similar to Maximus in "The Gladiator" - depth and honor and soul.
Highland Warrior.......2007-06-27
Gillian MacKay meets Ross MacKenna on the battlefield. Their clans have been enemies for as long as anyone can remember. Attempting to create peace once and for all, Gillian's father insists that she marry Ross so their clans can unite. Ross is willing to try, the passion that ignites between them is enough for him, but Gillian is determined to hate Ross regardless of how he stirs her passions.
Jealous mistresses and disgruntled suitors are just some of the obstacles in Ross' and Gillian's way toward finding peace for their clans and themselves.
In Highland Warrior Gillian is strong and brave; she holds her own against anyone and Ross is handsome, fierce and protective. They are very compatible, but they have trouble seeing it. I liked the storyline in Highland Warrior very much it's exciting and romantic, but I wish that Gillian and Ross hadn't fought their attraction through most of the book.

another Mason keeper!.......2007-06-01
Okay, I admit it; I'm a sucker for a good cover and Mason always gets the best ones!
However, what has kept reading coming back to her for over 4 dozens books is she delivers novels worth reading. I always feel like I got the `price of the ticket'.
In this book, Mason once again heads to the Highlands. The MacKays and MacKenna's have a long-standing feud, so when the Laird of the MacKays loses another son, he's determined to see the deaths stop. To this end, he offers his daughter in married to handsome Ross MacKenna. Ross, too, feels it's time for the killing to stop, so he agrees to marry Gillian.
Only, Gillian isn't too thrilled to be shoved into a political marriage. It's an uneasy truce, this battleground called marriage. Ross desires Gillian, but doesn't trust her. Gillian is resistant but soon begins to fall in love with him. Just as they are finding a middle ground in their lives, there are a series of attacks against the MacKays. Ross blames Gillian and banishes her, sending her into sphere of the real enemy.
Mason proves she is still the Queen of Romance, no matter the period. Her fans will adore this one, another keeper for the Mason shelf!
Highland Warrior.......2007-05-29
Fun book, lot's of twist and turns. I have been reading Connie Mason's books for years. Although this book is predictable, it was fun to read. From brave Gillian the warrior woman, to Ross the exteme manly man, I love how the love-hate relationship grew to love and trust. Great read..sexy,erotic, and action pack adventure.

Cute Story.......2007-08-14
This is Fiona MacEnroy's story. She was the young girl in an earlier highland book. She always dressed like a boy...
She was raised by Connor (from another book) and taught to defend herself. LOL
Fiona (AKA 11 knives) runs away and a group of men find her, i.e., Ewan MacFingal.
When he goes to disarm her, he finds...11 knives on her body--strategically placed mind you. LOL
Since she won't tell him her name, he calls her, "... 11 knives."
This was a cute cute read.
Very Good Highlander Romance.......2006-08-05
This is my first Howell and it certainly won't be my last. What a great book! I won't rehash the plot as others have done so eloquently. Its well written, even if the highlander speak takes a bit of getting used to -ye ken? There's plenty of action, suspense, surprises and steamy love scenes. The secondary characters are fascinating and I love that there are sequels and prequels -lots of them. I didn't feel that I'm missing something by reading this one first (its sort-of smack dab in the middle). I'm looking forward to reading the others.
I also enjoyed these highlander tales:
Julie Garwood : Ransom, The Bride ( A MUST READ!), The Secret, Saving Grace, The Wedding
Paula Quinn:
Lord of Temptation & Lord of Desire (Both Excellent!)
Kinnely Macgregor: Master of Desire, Claiming the Highlander, Born to Sin (FANTASTIC!), Taming the Scotsman, Return of the Warrior & Dark Champion
Entertaining Scottish Romance.......2006-07-16
Fiona MacEnroy is fleeing an overtly earnest suitor through the hills and wilds of Scotland when she is set upon and captured by a group of men. Fully expecting a battle, she's rather surprised her many knives and swords are useless against their fearless and confounding leader, Ewan MacFingal. He whisks her away to his family stronghold, Scarglas, and she realizes she is in the hands of a family long held in contempt by neighboring clans. Despite rumors, Fiona feels a sense of peace within its walls and a growing sense of arousal for the enigmatic laird. Ewan himself finds much to admire in the bold and capable lass, yet he refuses to succumb to her charms. Fears of an unknown madness in his father keeps him at bay from anyone daring to get too close to him, especially Fiona, for he has long feared he is too much like his father. As old enemies, both of Fiona and Ewan, creep ever closer to the growing relationship between the two, will pride and fear keep them apart? Or will passion and love pave the path of their desires?
Author Howell uses pleasant details of Scottish countryside to draw the reader into her world. Scottish inflections are used throughout the story to lend that particular air of authenticity, though some words were used so heavily, and spelled as if a Scot were saying them, that it gets distracting at times. Secondary characters abound in the novel, and Ewan's father, Sir Fingal, plays an important role, one too important at times, for Ewan is extremely fixated on the problems that the man causes for the rest of their clan. Once the plot moved back to focusing on the hero and heroine, readers will once again be nicely entertained. Dialogue between all the characters is good, especially between Fiona and Ewan and Fiona and Mab, one of the clan's adoptive members. The secondary plot involving a n old, dangerous flame of Ewan's was somewhat weak, but still an interesting addition to help advance his and Fiona's relationship and shed light on Ewan's misgivings. Characters from previous books make an appearance and Ms. Howell actually sets the stage for the following book, "Highland Lover", very nicely without taking away from the main plot.
Considering the amount of characters that abound throughout, all were quite well developed. Readers will clearly feel Ewan's dilemma in remaining separate from Fiona due to his father's indiscretions. Fiona herself is an admirable heroine who more than proved her worthiness as one. She's never faint of heart and in fact jumps in, heart open wide and ready to claim her man. Despite its problems, it was an enjoyable read and I much anticipated reading about Ewan's awakening to the bold Fiona.

Quite entertaining.......2005-06-16
If you have read HIGHLAND BRIDE featuring Connor MacEnroy and Gillyanne Murray) then you'd remember Fiona as the tomboyish thirteen-year-old sister of Connor.
All grown up and no longer the gauche lass, we are introduced to a beautiful and spirited lady who has suffered the cruelty of an obsessed suitor. Kept locked in Deilcladach by her family for so long after having been abducted four times by Ranald Menzies, a man whose offer of marriage she has rejected, Fiona manages to escape the keep for a little while only to find herself lost and taken hostage by the MacFingals of Scarglas. With plans to ransom her, Ewan is annoyed when Fiona refuses to tell him who she is. And although Fiona puts up a fight in the beginning, she knows she is no match against the strength of the clan's laird and actually finds herself very attracted to him.
Now Ewan MacFingal is amazed at the petite woman whose courage and beauty he's never encountered before. What astounds him more is the strong attraction she stirs in him. But having been betrayed by a woman years before, he knows he needs to fight it or risk losing his heart again. As for Fiona, she senses the good in him despite the wall he has built around himself and in her heart, she knows that she has found her soul mate and is determined to win his heart.
HIGHLAND WARRIOR is a fun novel featuring a likable hero and heroine and their extended family also provide entertainment. I liked how Fiona's grown up to be like her sister-in-law Gilly, strong and courageous and a no-nonsense type of woman. The way she managed to wiggle herself into the hearts of Ewan's clan, especially his seemingly lunatic and immature father was delightful. But having read seven other Highland books, I found the whole concept of their hesitation to express their true feelings a little bit worn and rather formulaic, hence my reason for giving this only 3 stars instead of 4. Overall, this is quite enjoyable if you're after a light and easy read.
SHE DOES IT AGAIN!!!!.......2004-09-17
I LOVE HANNAH HOWELL.... EVERY ONE OF HER BOOKS JUST GET BETTER.
THIS ONE IS NO EXCEPTION.. IT'S FUNNY, SAD, AND FULL OF EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN A BOOK.....

Book Description
The author argues that it was in fact MacColla and not Montrose who was the true architect of the year of Victories, and that without his Highland ally, Montrose's blunders would have doomed him to disaster, thus presenting a compelling and radical reappraisal of Scottish history during the crucial years of the 1640s. As MacColla's actions were unwittingly to lead his people and culture to ruin, so his own career ended in chaos when, despite leading his own troops in a victorious charge, an incompetent general led him to defeat and death at Knocknanuss in Ireland.
Superbly written, Highland Warrior is a compelling and dramatic sweep through some of the most eventful years in Scottish history, told in a text both authoritative and highly readable.
Customer Reviews:
Alasdair Mac Colla.......2001-12-20
Stevenson looks at the history of the Gaelic fringe of Ireland and Scotland in the seventeenth century with a refreshingly unromantic eye. Gone are the quaint stories of Highland laddies, and villanous Cromwellians. Stevenson's "Highland Warrior" is thick with intrigue. Alasdair Mac Colla emerges from these pages looking super-human, but certainly not heroic in the conventional sense. However, in the fallen world of the seventeenth century, Mac Colla and his sidekick Manus Ruadh O'Cahan may be the closest one might ever get to heroic figures. They are, at least, extremely interesting individuals. This is a magnificent book, and it is a must read for any student of Irish or Scottish history.
Book Description
For nearly 60 years the clans of Highland Scotland proved to be an almost constant thorn in the side of a series of British monarchs. Fiercely independent, the clans comprised an agricultural peasantry dominated by a warrior aristocracy. They held most forms of authority in contempt and did not submit to London meekly. Their first loyalty was to the exiled house of Stuart and in a series of rebellions the Highland clans rose against the ruling monarch. The author examines in detail the society that produced these fierce fighters and the tactics they used in battle including the feared 'Highland Charge'.
Customer Reviews:
Highlanders.......2007-08-24
I need not elaborate upon what previous reviewers have said about the pro-British stance of this text. This is a valuable book however, for the beautiful and detailed plates (perhaps the best Angus McBride I have ever seen) and the highly detailed plate commentary.
Horrible.......2003-01-09
Stuart Reid clearly has an Anglophile agenda when it comes to this subject. It appears the sole purpose to Reid's never-ending industrial assembly of these anti-Highland (as the other reviewer stated) publications is to advance the English viewpoint. If I had read Reid only, I would be under the impression that the Highland clans appeared out of nowhere in the 17th century purely to peck at Reid's worldview 300 years later. While the prejudiced and wooden writing of Reid sinks this book, it does have the genuine talent of Angus McBride at work. If only the illustrations could be purchased separately from the text!
The old Brit perspective........2001-08-24
Clouded with errors and thoroughly biased. For the clearly anti-Highland Stuart Reid to write on the Highlander (again) is like an Iraqi government official discussing the Kurds. Despite the text the illustrations by Angus McBride are excellent and almost make this book worth the money.
Fierce Fighters.......2000-10-31
For nearly 60 years the clans of Highland Scotland proved to be an almost constant thorn in the side of a series of British monarchs. Fiercely independent, the clans comprised an agricultural peasantry dominated by a warrior aristocracy.
They held most forms of authority outside of the clan in contempt and did not submit to London meekly. Their first loyalty was to the exiled house of Stuart and in a series of rebellions in 1689, 1715 and finally in 1745 the Highland clans rose against the ruling monarch. The author examines in detail the society that produced these fierce fighters and the tactics they used in battle including the feared 'Highland Charge'. The social structure of the clans, their organisation, equipment and clothing are closely examined, including an interesting section on the development of the Scottish plaid that culminated in the famous Highland kilt. Weapons and tactics are all studied at length, and a final evaluation of the Highland clansman's effectiveness is achieved by an in-depth analysis of their performance in the three major battles of Killiecrankie, Prestonpans and Culloden.
As the Scottish clan system developed, their interaction with one another often led to conflict. Special attention in this book is given to the rise and fall of the Jacobite cause under `Bonny Prince Charlie' in the 1745 rebellion, great illustration by Angus McBride which gives the reader a unique insight into the life of the Highlander's.
wondeful material for serious re-enactors.......1998-08-28
this boock is an excellent source for re-enactors and should be read before any other further sources. Unfortunately, Stuart Reid is always so pro-governmental forces.

Great Characters, Steamy Romance, & Magic.......2007-01-18
I just finished Beyond the Highland Mist. Wow! I almost gave it up at first with the fairy scenes and the hunky highlander (Hawk), but the book revs up with Adrienne's arrival. She adapts quite well to traveling back four centuries and being forced into marriage in Scotland in 1510.
The pair spar their way through a good part of the book, but finally get past that. Unfortunately the fairy interference keeps their romance from running smoothly. There are some steamy seduction scenes along the way and Adrienne gets yanked back and forth between centuries, but it all works out in the long run.
The second book takes Grimm as the hero. He was Hawk's best friend in Beyond the Highland Mist.
Book Description
Lachlan MacGown has been long suspicious of the mysterious warrior "Hunter" and when he discovers that "he" is a she, Lachlan couldn't be more stunned...or delighted! But no matter how lovely the lass is, he's seen her conferring with an enemy of his clan, and he doesn't trust her an inch. Especially when she takes a job as nursemaid to that enemy's young children. So Lachlan appoints himself her escort, refusing to leave her side 執hich makes for very interesting days...and nights!

A woman who can hold her own.......2007-09-21
Finally a book about a woman who can wield a sword just as well as men, who is intelligent - outwitting the men. I love books where in a time when women were viewed as property, they shine out as being equal or even better to their male counterparts. It's a great read. Ending went a little too quickly.
the annoying warrior bride.......2004-10-29
The hero of the story is fantastic, the heroine leaves alot to be desired. The story is a little far-fetched (woman poses as a male warrior and no one figures it out until she's naked?)
'Hunter' is a cold, undeveloping character. It was hard to believe that he fell in love with her or that she even liked him.
I enjoyed reading this book..........2003-02-24
...but it took a long time to reach the plot (page 260, chapter 19, to be exact). The characters were interesting - at times, humorous - but the heart of the story lies within the last few chapters. I would have liked to have seen the suspense and action carried throughout the tale, not just the conclusion. Too much time is spent on the heroine's journey from Point A to Point B.
engaging sixteenth century Scottish romance.......2002-11-05
In 1535 during a battle between Scottish clans, the mysterious warrior Hunter saves the life of an unconscious Lachlan "Rouge Fox" MacGowan. Lachlan's brothers tease him as how tenderly Hunter carried him from the battlefield to the safety of Evermyst as if they were lovers. Even though he resents owing anyone anything, Lachlan, vowing to pay his debt, wants to thank the warrior who probably saved his life.
In 1536 Lachlan still owes the Hunter, who rejects everything the Rogue Fox offers. Lachlan has become intrigued with the warrior and swears he will learn the secret of this great fighter. When he does uncover the secret he is shocked beyond belief, but beginning to understand his fascination with the Hunter while he observes the warrior talking with an enemy while evil stalks Evermyst.
THE WARRIOR BRIDE may be the strongest of Lois Greiman's Scottish romances as the cast makes for quite an exciting tale. The Hunter is a wonderful warrior with secrets that will surprise the audience. Lachlan is obsessive to make remittance to his savior until he uncovers the secret and changes his obsession. The secondary characters add depth to a tale that will provide much satisfaction to readers of sixteenth century romances.
