Book Description
In Vegan with a Vengeance, Isa Chandra Moskowitz, host of the community access vegan cooking show The Post Punk Kitchen, brings the do-it-yourself, community-driven ethos of punk rock into the kitchen. Her cooking philosophy embraces being kind to animals (all recipes are completely animal-product free) and your wallet—while being creative and having fun in the process. She emphasizes staying clear of corporate brand-name foods, and says that cooking should be an innovative, experimental, and completely real experience. This one-of-a-kind cookbook offers 125 recipes for all meals of the day, from stuffed mushrooms to tofu pizza, gingerbread cupcakes to pasta with "alfreda sauce," and is full of tips and tricks on how to keep your diet vegan, inexpensive, and liberated.
Customer Reviews:
my most beloved cookbook (and that's saying something).......2007-10-08
I originally found isa chandra moskowitz about a year ago on her cooking show, the post punk kitchen. I had recently become a vegan and although I was an avid vegetarian cook, I had been eating a lot of frozen meat substitutes and tofu stir fries as a vegan. I needed ideas (ideas that didn't include brie). after watching a few episodes of isa and terry's show, I bought vegan with a vengeance. it definitely made veganism a lot more fun and delicious!
isa's recipes stress fresh ingredients and making things from scratch. it may take a bit of time, but it is always worth it in the end! I think the biggest excitement for me was trying the vegan matzo ball soup. I actually enjoyed it more than my memories of overly salted chicken broth versions I'd eaten growing up. another spectacular recipe is the baking powder biscuits with white bean gravy and tempeh sausage crumbles. I live in san francisco and was feeling depressed about missing out on the pork store's biscuits and vegetarian gravy for breakfast. after making this meal recently, my cravings were completely satiated and then some! my non-vegan boyfriend requests it all the time for weekend brunch.
the bottom line is, all of the recipes I've tried are amazing and filling and in no way the stereotypical vegan fare. it is food for food lovers, whether they eat meat or not. buy this book and love it.
I'm NOT Vegan, but I love this cookbook.......2007-10-08
I'm not vegan, but my husband is vegetarian and my daughter is allergic to dairy and eggs. Cooking for all three of us can be difficult. This cookbook is a life saver, literally. Isa's recipes give me safe options for my toddler that are really delicious to boot. Her lemon blueberry waffles alone are reason to buy the book - every person I've made this for - vegan or not has agreed it's the best waffle recipe ever. Other favorites include the pumpkin oatmeal cookies, Fronch Toast, and the various scone recipes. If you want to bake for people with dairy food allergies, this is the book for you. Next on my list is her Cupcakes Around the World cookbook - perfect for the birthday party coming up.
Super excellent food for the whole family!.......2007-10-03
I originally borrowed this book from our local library and just did not want to turn it in. The book is worth the price just for the scrambled tofu and pumpkin muffin recipes! While not as focused on making recipes low fat or sugar or salt free like other vegan cookbooks (I have tended to tone down the sugar a bit on some of the recipes), its great food and gives us lots of great tasting new ideas for getting healthy vegan food into our diet. My husband, our 4 year old son and I give this 6 thumbs up and are eagerly awaiting her next book. Do give it a try.
I never thought I'd crave tofu........2007-10-03
So, there I was, an ovo-lacto vegetarian. Mainly, I rationalized, because I couldn't figure out how to bake without eggs, or thought that "abandoning" cheese would be just too difficult. If one would believe the current media stereotype, vegans exist on eating twigs and apples. Know what? Twigs be damned. Vegan with a Vengeance, and the oh-so-amazing Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World, make eating with a conscience easy. Easier than easy. I don't crave cheese at all. I do, however, crave tofu scramble. It is so good that one day, I ate it breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The homemade seitan is so incredibly good, makes a ton, and saves you beaucoup bucks because you don't have to buy it at the store (did I mention that it tastes WAY better than store-bought?) The cheesy flavor that nutritional yeast flakes give off is too amazing to be believed. VwaV has breakfast, lunch, brunch, dinner, dessert... everything you need to make delicious, twig-free meals for everyone. If you're looking at this cookbook because you want a healthy alternative to an animal-based diet, I would urge you to get this. It's not preachy. It's chock full of hints and tips, product resources, and just really, really, delicious food.
My new favorite cookbook.......2007-09-30
I love this cookbook! The recipes are easy, and they have all turned out great. It even inspired me to try baking vegan cookies for the first time, which turned out better than cookies I used to make with eggs and butter. My favorite part about the book is that there isn't a single recipe that calls for meat substitute products or brand name items.

Good book.......2007-10-03
The J D Robb series has me hooked. I was very happy that Amazon has back copies on had at a reasonable price.
Great.......2007-07-19
I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.
Vengeance.......2007-06-24
This book is well written. I do not enjoy reviews that give too much of the storyline away, suffice I should say this book does not let me down from the previous Lieutenant Eve Dallas series. However, it will stand-alone, you do not have to read any other book in this series to know what is going on with it. I would not spoil it for you if I were to tell you that the murders start off extremely grisly and get very personal to the investigator. You gotta' love this book because, Lt. Eve will not stop until the killer is found. The suspense kept me going till the end.
Great Book.......2007-05-09
I love all of the books in this series ! The book was received in perfect condition.
Never saw it coming.......2007-04-11
The past always comes back to haunt you.... those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. Luckily, both Roarke and Eve have learned from their checkered pasts.
When a mad man decides to punish Roarke for the sins of his youth, Eve becomes a pawn in a game of cat and mouse...but is Eve the pawn or is Roarke? To answer that question, Eve must hunt down a criminal as merciless as the devil himself.... Vengeance is the game. Death is the solution.
Book Description
Vengeance is a true story that reads like a novel. It is the account of five ordinary Israelis, selected to vanish into "the cold" of espionage secrecy -- their mission to hunt down and kill the PLO terrorists responsible for the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics in 1972.
This is the account of that secret mission, as related by the leader of the group -- the first Mossad agent to come out of "deep cover" and tell the story of a heroic endeavor that was shrouded in silence and speculation for years. He reveals the long and dangerous operation whose success was bought at a terrible cost to the idealistic volunteer agents themselves.
"Avner" was the leader of that team, handpicked by Golda Meir to avenge the monstrous crime of Munich. He and his young companions, cut off from any direct contact with Israel, set out systematically to find and kill the central figures of the PLO's Munich operation, tracking them down wherever they lived.
The mechanics, the horror, the day-by-day suspense of what they did surpass by far anything John le Carré or Robert Ludlum could imagine, as they themselves were tracked in turn (and some killed) by PLO assassins, changing identities constantly, moving from country to country, devoting their young lives to the brutal task of vengeance.
Vengeance is a profoundly human document, a real-life espionage classic that plunges the reader into the shadow world of terrorism and political murder. But it goes far beyond that, to explore firsthand the feelings of disgust and doubt that gradually came to torment each member of the Israeli team, and that in the end inexorably changed their view of the mission -- and themselves.
Vengeance opens a window onto a secret world, a book that at the same time inspires and horrifies. For its subject is an act of revenge that goes to the very heart of the ancient biblical questions of good and evil.
Customer Reviews:
An eye-opener on the nature of counter-terrorism.......2007-10-10
I read "Notes on a controversy" at the end of the book first, because this justification of the text by the author deals with the issue of veracity. The book has apparently been attacked on this score, and of course the very nature of the subject excludes the possibility of total and certain verification of all the facts, but the author makes a convincing case of the techniques he used in circumventing this problem and checking out his main source's story. That story itself is gripping, not only because it describes in thriller-like fashion the actions undertaken by an Israeli hit team against the masterminds behind the killings of Israel's Olympic team in 1972, but also because of what I would call, perhaps oddly, its humanity: the personal torment felt by the members of the hit team is faithfully portrayed, and is perhaps the most unforgettable part of the narrative. One closes the book with the uneasy feeling that there really is no way to avenge, let alone deter, the monstrous deeds perpetrated by terrorist scum. But I do not share a shred of the hit team's doubts that their actions were fully justified. This book is an eye-opener on the nature on terrorism, but also on the ruthlessness demanded of those who are called to combat it. The book leaves one with few illusions about "the secret world" either, which adds to its aura of truthfulness.
A Very Plausible Account of Events.......2007-08-20
Vengeance succeeds on many levels. It could easily stand as a classic tradecraft work about espionage operations or as a fictional spy thriller. It is action packed and a real page-turner. I was disappointed when it ended.
Terrorism succeeds, when it succeeds, by using violence to send a public message to one's opposition. It amounts to negotiation by murder and bomb blasts. The message being: "If we aren't safe, you aren't safe either." That was the message that the Black September organization sent to Israel with their 1972 Munich action, and it was the same message that the Israeli state sent back to Black September via Avner's hit team. Terrorism is warfare by symbolic violence, although it's more than symbolic if you're there when the bombs go off or the shooting starts.
As to whether all aspects of Vengeance are literally "true," I admit I have my doubts. But so what? It has verisimilitude where it counts and whether this or that specific detail is literally true or is a mishmash of several events or characters combined is largely irrelevant. The ongoing terror campaigns going on all over the world today show that the morally ambiguous world that Avner and his opposition existed in 1972 hasn't changed that much. And it probably never will.
Spies? Terrorists? Assassinations? The Middle East? A True Story? Yes!.......2007-06-18
The Jewish state of Israel has always had an aura of intrigue because of the reputation of the Mossad. This is a true story of a group of spies who were on a mission too difficult and high profile for the Mossad. This book is an excellent story in itself, but the fact that it is a true story makes it even more fascinating. Quite a bit of history on terrorism against Israel is given. Personally, I was ashamedly ignorant of the persecution that Israel suffered in the 60's and 70's through terrorism. This book brought to light the terror that was leveled against Israel. Jonas does an excellent job of writing, in a humble way that is uncharacteristic of many authors. The very nature of his writing lends credibility to his story. The afterward by the author is an exciting supplement to the book, giving the author's rebuttal to those who question the validity of the book. I loved the way the book unfolded, cold and slow in the beginning but slowly picking up speed and never slowing down until the last page. I look forward to seeing Stephen Spielberg's movie based on the book as Spielberg has shown in the past that he can successfully make good films that stay true to the books that they are based upon.
A reoccurring theme throughout the book is the morality behind terrorism and counter terrorism. At what point does the defender become the aggressor? America has faced this problem as well in the past few years trying to define the fine line between defense and cold-blooded war. Is counter terrorism justified? Was Israel's decision to assassinate top terrorist leaders warranted, or did these actions put the Israelis on ethical par with the murderous terrorists? The book clearly shows how the decisions of war are difficult, and there is often no straightforward moral line in such choices. There will always be dispute and debate between Moses' law of eye for an eye and Jesus' law of turning the other cheek. While both of these laws seem to be incompatible with each other, it will do humanity well to find how these two laws full of wisdom come together in some sort of compromise.
One of the best books I"ve ever read.......2007-05-21
I don't dole out 5 stars to books easily. But this one definitly earned it. If you've seen Munich, you know what the book is about, though the movie did deviate from the book in some ways, it was mostly the same.
It was a captivating book, and in the end, it trancended your typical "spy novel" thriller, in that it brought up deep questions regarding our notions of patriotism, militant service to country, and the way nations use their patriotic heros like disposable pawns.
bravo for a well written page turner - I loved reading this book........2007-05-02
This is the type of book that you will only put down if sleep is absolutely necessary, and you are able to "dine in moderation" knowing that tomorrow you will get to enjoy more satisfying reading. The reader feels as if he is in the mind of the protagonist, very rarely do I find this in an 'as told to' format. Next stop of course will be the movie rental. I found this in an airport bookstore and truth be told I wouldn't have minded if the plane was delayed for hours, but as a matter of fact the plane was on time, however, the book was finished before the return trip.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
A bizarre cross-universe game between Mxyzptlk and the Joker, it seems. Batman and Superman are harassed and kept off balance by an Ultimate Marvel Universe satire, and two Bizarros, including a Batman.
In the end, this appears to all be a plot to free Bat-Mite and release Darkseid from the Source Wall, as well as get Batman and Superman to be more trusting.
They get to through in a Batwoman, a Superwoman, and a Supermen and Batman through the ages. Lots of fun for the artists, presumably.
Somewhat incomprehensible and whacky.
Don't skip it..........2007-05-16
I'm not quite sure why so many people have a problem with this story. Sure it's crazy, but considering the main "villains" involved, it should be nothing else. I don't think a lot of people really "get" this story, which is so crazy...it works.
There's a ton of characters involved, and some twists to old favorites. I loved The Maximums as an Avengers parody, great stuff there. Bizzaro and Batzarro are great as unlikely heroes, although after awhile it can be a chore reading their text. It was cool to see Loeb handle them just as he does Supes and Bats though.
Overall this is a fun read, if you take it too seriously, you'll end up jaded like the other people who've written reviews on it. It looks very likely that Loeb and McGuinness just wanted to have a good time with their last S/B arc. It's nice to have some comics left these days that don't take themselves so seriously. It's also worth noting that this arc again builds on the relationship between Superman and Batman, which Loeb is great at. I recommend it, don't listen to the hate.
Jeph Loeb's swan song, thankfully.......2007-05-01
Up until this storyarc, I pretty much enjoyed Jeph Loeb's run on the high selling Superman/Batman series, but sadly, Loeb's final arc on the title is just loaded with plot holes and hard to understand. Vengeance finds a group called the Maximums hunting down Superman and Batman because they believe the two iconic heroes murdered one of their own. Naturally, this is not the case, and soon enough Bizarro is on the scene, along with "Batzarro" (I kid you not), the Joker, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. What happens next in Vengeance is incredibly hard to follow as Loeb appears to shift things into high gear, but things never take off. His renditions of Supes and Bats are more wooden here than ever before, and the story inconsistencies and additional appearances out of nowhere just boggle the mind. Ed McGuinness, who teamed with Loeb when Superman/Batman launched, returns to lend his pencil work with Dexter Vines on inks, may be too cartoony for some, but it's undoubtedly the highlight of this TPB. This ended up being Loeb's last arc on the title before taking work once again with Marvel, so hopefully the otherwise talented and celebrated writer has had his batteries recharged.
Poor Storyline.......2007-02-26
I loved the first two arcs of the Superman/Batman series - they were superb. The first of those, "Public Enemies", was made by the same team that created this, but its hard to believe by reading it. Loeb weaves a ridiculous plot that doesn't really do anything except introduce a variety of characters into an absurd storyline. The only redeeming feature of this whole thing is the artwork by McGuiness, which was excellent as usual. But it doesn't make it worth wasting time with this silly piece.
Great!!!.......2006-11-08
Great addition to the series. I wasnt too crazy about the story, but the number of different characters more than made up for it.

Eye Opening.......2007-05-14
As usual, Jean Sasson opened my eyes to a harsh culture where survival is your minute by minute goal. She has provided women with a voice and others of us a reason to be thankful to be Americans.
Engaging.......2007-05-12
I love all of Jean Sasson's books. Like all the others, this is written to keep you interested in the story and wondering what could possibly happen next to this poor young woman, her husband and all Kurds, even though you eventually know about the general outcome. The fact that the story is true, makes it hair raising. The only unfavorable thing I could say about the book, is that in telling the story, Jean Sasson looses herself a bit by going into too many details of places, people, every day occurrances, and the constant back and forth conversations between the protagonists. Sometimes it is best to leave details to your imagination. Other than that, I enjoyed it thoroughly and can't wait for the next!
THIS IS A GREAT STORY BY AN EXCELLENT AUTHOR........2007-03-03

Gary Jonathan Bass, of Princeton University, offers a vigorous, liberal endorsement of war-crimes trials at a time when they're coming under close scrutiny in the aftermath of Bosnia, Kosovo, and Rwanda. This book--Bass's first--takes its title from U.S. prosecutor Robert Jackson's opening statement at the Nuremberg trials, following World War II: "That four great nations, flushed with victory and stung with injury, stay the hand of vengeance and voluntarily submit their captive enemies to the judgment of the law is one of the most significant tributes that Power has ever paid to Reason." Nuremberg is, of course, widely regarded as a glowing success; other war-crimes tribunals fall far short of its mark. A strength of this book is Bass's willingness to deal with these realities. His defense of war-crimes trials doesn't rest on head-in-the-sky notions about international justice. He argues, simply, that they're in the interest of democratic, peace-loving nations: "It is not that these complicated and often muddled trials are too noble to question; it is that the other options could be worse."
For an advocate, Bass is refreshingly honest: "Do war crimes tribunals work? The only serious answer is: compared to what? No, war crimes trials do not work particularly well. But they have clear potential to work, and to work much better than anything else diplomats have come up with at the end of a war." Apathy and vengeance, which Bass considers the two alternatives to tribunals, are both worth avoiding, he says. The bulk of Stay the Hand of Vengeance focuses on how nations dealt with war crimes following the Napoleonic era, World War I, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the crumbling of Yugoslavia, and several other episodes. Bass, who was a journalist before becoming an academic, writes with great clarity and knows how to combine anecdote with argument to make his point. For those interested in the international prosecution of war crimes from both historical and contemporary perspectives, this is required reading. --John J. Miller
Book Description
International justice has become a crucial part of the ongoing political debates about the future of shattered societies like Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, Cambodia, and Chile. Why do our governments sometimes display such striking idealism in the face of war crimes and atrocities abroad, and at other times cynically abandon the pursuit of international justice altogether? Why today does justice seem so slow to come for war crimes victims in the Balkans? In this book, Gary Bass offers an unprecedented look at the politics behind international war crimes tribunals, combining analysis with investigative reporting and a broad historical perspective. The Nuremberg trials powerfully demonstrated how effective war crimes tribunals can be. But there have been many other important tribunals that have not been as successful, and which have been largely left out of today's debates about international justice. This timely book brings them in, using primary documents to examine the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, World War I, the Armenian genocide, World War II, and the recent wars in the former Yugoslavia.
Bass explains that bringing war criminals to justice can be a military ordeal, a source of endless legal frustration, as well as a diplomatic nightmare. The book takes readers behind the scenes to see vividly how leaders like David Lloyd George, Winston Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Bill Clinton have wrestled with these agonizing moral dilemmas. The book asks how law and international politics interact, and how power can be made to serve the cause of justice.
Bass brings new archival research to bear on such events as the prosecution of the Armenian genocide, presenting surprising episodes that add to the historical record. His sections on the former Yugoslavia tell--with important new discoveries--the secret story of the politicking behind the prosecution of war crimes in Bosnia, drawing on interviews with senior White House officials, key diplomats, and chief prosecutors at the war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia. Bass concludes that despite the obstacles, legalistic justice for war criminals is nonetheless worth pursuing. His arguments will interest anyone concerned about human rights and the pursuit of idealism in international politics.
Customer Reviews:
excellent case studies of the politics of war crimes trials.......2007-09-07
At the Tehran Conference in 1943, Stalin toasted the summary executions of 50,000 German officers, Churchill privately proposed a number of some 100 major war criminals, Roosevelt kept silent, swayed alternately by Hans Morgenthau, Jr., who proposed some 2500 summary executions, and Henry Stimson, who preferred trials. That Stimson should ultimately prevail in the debate owes as much to accidents of history as to any profound historical moment culminating in Nuremberg. How Nuremberg ultimately played out, and the subsequent notion of holding leaders personally responsible for war crimes, is a tale well worth reading.
Gary Jonathan Bass's book, Stay the Hand of Vengeance, debunks several of the myths that grow from such moments. Still, in reviving the story of Leipzig (trials of German officers after World War I) and Constantinople/Malta (trials of Ottoman officers after World War I), Bass has presented not just a useful set of anecdotes on trials that failed and one that succeeded beyond expectation or intention, but a careful history of what drove efforts to hold such trials in the first place, of the limited political will behind them, the complexity and likelihood of failure.
Bass offers two principle insights: first, liberal states have a tendency to support individual accountability through trials for leaders responsible for war crimes that is unique (illiberal states prefer summary executions without second thought). Second, the tendency for liberal states to desire individual accountability and punishment ("legalism," as Bass uses the term) varies directly with the quantity of suffering experienced by that state: France loses 14 times as many men as America in World War I, and Britain 10 times as many men, and both are far more interested in war crimes trials. America, on the other hand, supported prosecutions for those responsible for unrestricted submarine warfare. The first goal of liberal states is to punish those who have harmed their own citizens. The second goal is to do so without risking their own troops. Bass calls this "selfishness."
The principle defect with Bass's amazingly rich work (and apparently, his first academic work following the Let's Go Guide to Egypt and Israel) is that it was published before 9-11, before Guantanamo, the trial of Saddam, the death of Slobodan Milosevic in The Hague, the ongoing efforts in Arusha and Rwanda, and the preliminary flickerings of prosecutions before the International Criminal Court for offenses in Darfur, Sudan, and Uganda. An update is urgently needed.
Vainly, one hopes Bass's insights into war crimes trials and the politics behind them will prove unnecessary. Those who anticipate that new monstrous figures will arise in this century may be well-served by a careful read of Bass's work, in that the prospects and pitfalls of trials as a means of addressing global villainy deserve this sort of well-researched, attentively reasoned, albeit somewhat disheartening, treatment.
"In the last analysis," Bass concludes, "the two international war crimes tribunals in The Hague and Arusha stand largely as testaments to the failure of America and the West."
Indeed: a bit more willpower at the right time, and gross atrocities might have been averted. The thing is, this indictment applies not only to these grand tribunals, but to all criminal courts generally: but for a bit more will, courage, restraint, honor, or whatever other moral virtue proved lacking, nearly all crime might be averted. Hence, the issue is not whether courts reduce criminality, but what to do with the folks guilty of the worst order thereof. And at the least, Bass's work provides some suggestions on when they will likely fail, or prove worse than failures, and how to limit total risks of prosecuting the worst villains of history.
well written, fascinating.......2001-01-26
This book is thoroughly researched and footnoted and very well written. It culminates in a balanced account of the development of the International War Crimes Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia and exposes the role of Western nations in supporting- and in some cases, obstructing the tribunal's work. Bass' thesis is that Western nations value human rights and the rule of law,- but not more than the lives of their own soldiers - thus accounting for the sporadic Western support for War Crimes tribunals. This is provocative book which has many insights into the complexities of international organizations, human rights, and diplomacy.
real good book.......2000-11-06
The man has courage to deal with these issues read the book
Don't Miss This Book.......2000-09-14
Gary Jonathan Bass's book is a riveting, thoughtful read into what has been a long-neglected chapter of history. Piecing it all together wasn't easy. Mr. Bass takes sound scholarship, adds good reporting, and weaves a tale that I, frankly, could not put down. Read it. You won't regret it.
Great History, Great Journalism, Great Scholarship.......2000-08-10
If you care even a little bit about international justice, you have to read this groundbreaking book. The research is incredibly painstaking--there's unbelievable stuff about the war crimes tribunal after the Napoleonic Wars, and a riveting reconstruction of the failed tribunal after the Armenian genocide. But there's also great journalism about the search for justice in the Balkans. It looks like international tribunals are going to be the next big thing; this is the definitive history, and the definitive analysis.

"Former SEAL Team Six leader and American hero Richard Marcinko is back in action with a thriller ripped from tomorrow's headlines. Mixing fact with fiction, Marcinko returns to his authentic, no-holds-barred style in the latest explosive installment of his New York Times bestselling series, Rogue Warrior(R): Vengeance. Armed with irreverent wit and a fully loaded submachine gun, Marcinko's fictional alter ego takes no prisoners as he and his Red Cell II team tackle fat-cat American bureaucrats as well as terrorists. Interspersing action with his classic combination of wisecracks and earthy humor, Marcinko crams a chemical explosion, a high-speed helicopter chase, a train hijacking, and a headless corpse into the first few pages. When it becomes clear that terrorists are gunning for Demo Dick as well as the country's most precious symbols and institutions, things become very personal. Forget the Rogue Warrior's usual terms of endearment -- this time he's out for blood. Launched on an all-out international hunt, Demo Dick discovers a plot targeting the country's largest shipping port for liquefied petroleum gas...but that's just a prelude for Independence Day. Of all the thriller writers out there today, only one has truly walked the walk and talked the talk. Marcinko infuses his new book with stories and details that could come only from the inside -- which makes them all the more alarming. Reserve the edge of your seat for this one.... "

What happened to the Rogue Warrior?.......2007-06-25
I am a fan of most action genres and the early Marcinko stuff was great. This book, however, was so bad I couldn't even finish it. The characters were weak, the story poorly developed, and there was no evidence of any kind of research being done in this book. I live in Vegas and was dissapointed that Marcinko didn't even bother to verify glaring and rediculous errors that could have been verified on-line (even though a little on-site investigation would be better). It may be that this story line is just played out and should be put to rest.
Macinko yet again delivers.......2007-03-13
Marcinko is at it again with a fact/fiction return of life and conflict. Im a specialist of military tribute and i am again satisfied.
check out from the library - don't buy.......2007-01-02
When Demo Dick first wrote Rogue Warrior, it was good because the first person format was about "his story" (with the characteristic Marcinko lingo). This is latest novel is a sad departure from the DevGru Guru we were entertained by...and some of us worked with.
It takes more than a ghost writer to make a good story. Yes DHS is lame. Yes, a trained chimp could out perform DHS in almost any scenario you could devise. We all know that, and the public endures the mediocrity because no individual knows how to professionalize the machine (witness, Mr. M, how your Red Cell ops embarassed the Navy - pissing off admirals without getting that much to change).
Potential readers -- don't waste your time and money to be disappointed by this story.
Dick -- (with respect, sir) go back to your roots and tell "your story" because it's better than all the make believe and yes, I realize it is more work for you to put it together. Instead of collaborating with a ghost writer, collaborate with Larry Simmons and some of the old Mustangs, or Master Chiefs like Gary Gallagher who can tell the "real story" of how things work(ed). It's not as much published glory for you personally but the end result could be fantastic and a potential "classic" in the way Rogue Warrior was.
The Rogue Warrior doesn't disappoint........2006-11-07
Yet another action filled book by Richard Marcinko. If you have only read one or all of the Rogue Warrior serious of books you won't be disappointed by this one, the Red Cell team are there to follow Demo Dick in making life hard for anyone who gets in his way.
Terrible!.......2006-07-12
Following the series our pleasantly plump former SEAL "collaborated" on with John Weisman, these latest forays into the fiction world are best left alone. Characters are weak, as is the dialgue, and the plot is virtually nonexistant. His new collaboration with DeFelice just does not have the same pizzaz!

a fun read.......2007-07-06
If you like fables or magic based stories this series is for you. Bill Willingham is a great writer and the art is perfect for this story
acceptable, worth reading but not as good as before.......2007-07-02
Compare to "Day of Vengeance (Countdown to Infinite Crisis)"; the quality of art is not as good; more comic like; in turn the comics cannot move the story forwards. The story is OK; villians are introduced and the team worked together but the character development is also very basic.

Book Description
Award-winning author Elizabeth George gives us an early glimpse into the lives of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, forensic scientist Simon Allcourt-St. James, and Lady Helen Clyde in a superlative mystery that is also a fascinating inquiry into the crimes of the heart. Lynley, the eighth earl of Asherton, has brought to Howenstow, his family home, the young woman he has asked to be his bride. But the savage murder of a local journalist is the catalyst for a lethal series of events that shatters the calm of a picturesque Cornwall village and embroils Lynley and St. James in a case far outside their jurisdiction—and a little too close to home. When a second death follows closely on the heels of the first, Lynley finds he can't help taking the investigation personally—because the evidence points to a killer within his own family.

Reading this is like watching paint dry.......2007-10-08
I couldn't get into this book at all. I kept waiting for the mystery and all I got was slow-going personal information.
I was also very confused in the beginning as to who was whom. I enjoy brief physical descriptions of characters and there was not much of that. My imagination couldn't get a grasp of these characters at all and I just couldn't relate to or identify with any of them.
I had to put it down after 100 pages. I didn't want to waste my time.
Aristrocratic deceit.......2007-09-25
Written in the early 90's ...who would believe an entire household playing head games with attempted rape, addiction, violence and deceit, not to mention marital abuse, and murder most foul? There is an elephant in the middle of the room in every scene. Painful to watch everyone pretending that everything is just fine. A bunch of royal misfits who are pathetic. Surely a murder mystery could have SOME minor characters with a bit of spine. I have run out of patience to see if anyone will eventually behave in an interesting or authentic manner. Think I will return my copy half-read. Ms. George does seem to stress the down and dirty and violent. I loved the PBS series, Inspector Lynley.
Terrible book - full of melodrama - completely unrealistic.......2007-03-09
I enjoyed reading the first three books in this series. Each was an improvement on the previous one. But this book is awful. The fact that this book is a prequel to the series does not affect my review. But the writing is just terrible. The characters make the most outlandish and hyperbolic statements. No one talks like these characters! Their behavior is often at odds with their characters. Written in the style of a harlequin romance; there is absolutely nothing subtle about emotions or reactions. I think that the book was plotted in advance and the characters were written to meet the requirements of the plot. Never mind that none of the characters behave in a realistic manner. Never mind that the characters are only caricatures. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.
Terrific Book.......2006-08-03
In A SUITABLE VENGEANCE by Elizabeth George, the author explores the back-story between Inspector Lynley, St. James, Deborah and Lady Helen. During a rare weekend visit to his estate in Cornwall to celebrate his engagement to Deborah Cotter, Lynley becomes involved in the vicious murder of the local newspaper publisher. During the course of solving the crime, Ms. George delves into the history of St. James' accident, the relationship between St. James, Lynley, Deborah and Lady Helen, and the reason for the estrangement between Lynley and his mother and brother. While Ms. George always makes sure that her mysteries are solved, she does not always have happy resolutions for her characters. Reading this book only makes some of the later books in the series more poignant as it deepens the reader's understanding of all the characters. This is a fine book that will definitely touch your heart.
A Real Page Turner.......2006-08-03
After reading WITH NO ONE AS WITNESS, I had to go back and re-read A SUITABLE VENGEANCE by Elizabeth George so I could refresh my memory of the intertwining relationships between Inspector Lynley, Lady Helen, St. James and Deborah. This is a beautifully rendered novel as Ms. George explores the painful history of the four main characters' relationships-- and Lynley's unhappy family relationships.
The mystery is suitably intriguing as Lynley battles against the fear that one of his relatives may be involved in a brutal crime. It is also fun to go back and see the early days of Barbara Havers and Lynley, before they became partners.
This remains one of my favorites of Elizabeth George's books, one that I will probably read several more times.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
This is partly an excuse to have a talking ape, but is also one of the hyped prequel mini-series before DC's mega crossover, Infinite Crisis. This one has magic as a theme, with a human hostless Spectre going all medieval on a whole pile of magic users arses, seeing them as corrupt and bad. He is looking at bringing in a new age of magic.
It is up to a motley band, The Shadowpact, ,to try and stop him.
Not too bad, but confusing.......2007-04-03
One of the lead-in mini series' to DC's Infinite Crisis mega event, Day of Vengeance finds a few of DC's older icons in some sticky situations. What happens when the Spectre, the Spirit of Vengeance in the DC universe, is seduced into destroying all the magic forces he can get his hands on? Nothing good, that's what! Since Hal Jordan came back from the dead and is a Green Lantern once again, the Spectre has been left without a human host, which leaves him vulnerable to attack from Eclipso. Soon after that, the wizard Shazam meets his demise, leading Captain Marvel and a host of other magically powered characters including Detective Chimp and the Phantom Stranger, to unite in an effort to take down the Spectre. The story is written by Fables creator Bill Willingham, and features some great dialogue as well as art, but the overall story is confusing. Not to mention that believing a being whose sole purpose is the punishment of the guilty getting so easily tricked into being an evil pawn? I don't think so. There's also a lead-in story from Judd Winick, which in itself isn't anything real special, although that shouldn't be much of a surprise. All in all, Day of Vengeance isn't the best of the Infinite Crisis tie-in's, but it's definitely not the worst (Rann/Thanagar War anyone?).
Logic would help.......2006-09-24
I read this because it was a Prelude to Infinite Crisis, but the story defies logic. The Spectre is known in the DC Universe as the spirit of Vengeance. He is all-powerful, and can see into your soul and view the evil person you are. So it defies logic that he decides to destroy all magic because Eclipso (the very definition of evil) tells him to.
In truth, I never really understood why Eclipso wanted to destroy magic...other than to create chaos. I enjoyed reading about some of the lesser characters in the DC magical universe, and for me that includes the wizard Shazam and Captain Marvel. But the book is light on understanding those characters, and the ending definitely leaves you with little understanding as to what has just ocurred.
I have not yet read Infinite Crisis, so maybe in retrospect it will make more sense. Unfortunately, I doubt it.
Not well-plotted overall, though certain scenes are effective by themselves........2006-02-13
"Day of Vengeance" sounded like a great idea going in. Willingham is one of the underrated creators in comics, and throw in a legend like Walt Simonson as cover artist, and there's enough to interest any longtime comics fan.
Unfortunately, the execution fell short of what it could have been. The story read like a "house without a foundation". Certain scenes and characters were well handled (this story breathed new life into Detective Chimp for the first time since he guested in Flash/GL in the mid-nineties). However, the overall story lacked direction. It all just seemed disjointed.
One big part of the problem was that "Day of Vengeance" was not a stand-alone story. It's part of the larger "Infinite Crisis". Unfortunately, there is every expectation of an actual resolution. After all, any story collected a TPB deserves at least some kind of independent conclusion, even if it is part of a larger whole. Don't you think?
Grade: Incomplete, because this is unfortunately not a whole story.
Recommendation: Get it if you are an Infinite Crisis completist. If you are a casual Infinite Crisis reader, you can probably pass if you want to save money. If you have no idea what Infinite Crisis is, then don't even bother.
Better than alot of people are saying.......2006-01-20
I actually really liked DoV. True, the story line itself wasn't particularly award-winning, but the book itself was fun and entertaining. Plus, it has just enough of a dark feel that you can anticipate the "coming CRISIS". I thought it was refreshing to see a number of very minor characters (Chimp, Catman, Nightmaster, OMAC, etc.) being reintroduced in the Crisis storylines. Bonus points for Shazam's much larger role also.
P.S. I have a new favorite hero...Detectice Chimp! (can't believe I'm saying that)
