5 out of 5 stars Brings out the magnificance of the whitetail........2001-01-11

This is a book for everyone. Naturalist, conservationist, hunter, whatever you may be you'll enjoy this book. Based on what Mr. Alsheimer does best, photography, he takes you through the seasons. The pictures are splendid. Accompaning this photographic walk through a yearly whitetail lifecycle is a sound base of information concerning the whitetail's behavior.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected, but it was still good.......2000-08-18

I purchased this book, thinking that it was a hunting book. I was quite surprised that the book was a photojournal rather than a hunting book.

However, the book is filled with lots of extraordinary pictures of whitetails. The book does contain a lot of information on whitetail deer. Some of it can be applied to hunting, a lot of it is "interesting" or "nice to know" type information.

Despite this book not being what I expected, it is still a very fine book. I did learn a lot about whitetail deer in this book and the photography was excellent. I'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the beauty of a whitetail deer, hunters and non-hunters alike.

Whitetail: Behavior Through the Seasons was the best whitetail book that I have ever read. Alsheimer has a wonderful way of words and is unparalled with the camera. Each page is filled with stunning pictures that coinside with the reading. The book will be read and looked at agin and agin. It's truely worth every penny.

When the body of Doyce Barnett turns up in unsavory circumstances in Mississippi's Natchez Trace National Park, district ranger Anna Pigeon finds her investigation stymied at every turn. The dead man's brother, an undertaker with a secret that's been kept by three generations of his family, will do anything to protect it, even if his cover-up puts Anna's life in danger. Her own deputy, jealous because she got the job he wanted, seems to be sabotaging her case in order to advance his political ambitions. A bunch of Mississippi good old boys who've been poaching on park territory are gunning for her, and something strange is going on in a slave cemetery that's also in her bailiwick.

In this, her 10th outing, the prickly, ever-likable Ranger Pigeon puts all the pieces together in a lively, well-paced mystery that evokes two dimensions of the Deep South: its lush beauty and its tangled racial history, dimensions that, as Anna herself puts it, are "both a balm. History because its sins had already been committed, nature because she was supremely indifferent to the petty hysterias of the human race." --Jane Adams

Book Description

"Readers familiar with Barr's entertaining national park mystery series know that Anna rarely finds tranquility in God's country. Her fans can only be grateful that there are still plenty of national parks left for Anna Pigeon to visit." (People)

When Anna answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, once a producing plantation and inn on Mississippi's Natchez Trace Parkway and now a tourist spot, the last thing she expects to encounter is murder. But the man Anna finds in the stand's old bedroom is no tourist in distress. He's nearly naked, and very dead, his body bearing marks consistent with an S&M ritual gone awry. On a writing table nearby is an open Bible, ominous passages circled in red.

It seems the deceased is the brother of Raymond Barnette, local undertaker and a candidate for sheriff, who wants to keep any hint of kinkiness out of the minds of the God-fearing populace. Ray may be hiding a house full of secrets in the old family homestead, but before Anna can start her investigation, she's waylaid by malevolent poachers, peevish coworkers, and a suddenly turbulent romantic life. And when hidden agendas and old allegiances are revealed, it's suddenly Anna's life that's on the line.

Tightly plotted, brilliantly suspenseful, and beautifully written, Hunting Season offers solid evidence that mankind can be as unpredictable and dangerous as the great outdoors.

4 out of 5 stars All About Anna.......2007-05-01

I think you either like Anna or you don't. I can't say the plots are air tight. I can't say she's the most intuitive of detectives. I can say she's wonderful to spend time with -- and her insights and descriptions of very real people are, to use a well-worn word, palpable. She's focused, flawed, and fabulous (as a result). This plot is solid, the setting is well used, and the resolution is right there. Maybe not my favorite Nevada Barr, but still an enjoyable ride.

2 out of 5 stars Anna Pigeon as a District Ranger?.......2006-12-21

Maybe she is a better Law Enforcement Officer in other books, but frankly all I thought while reading this book is that she should get killed for her incompetence. She makes a big deal out of Thigpen's interviewing techniques, when it was quite obvious from the get go that Anna couldn't deduce her way out of a paper sack.
I got the audio tape at the library and have been listening to it during rush hour traffic, and quite frankly I have fast-forwarded thru her "pity-me" musings and have caught myself almost yelling at the audio for Anna's inability to see clues right in front of her eyes.

4 out of 5 stars Another Anna Pigeon Winner!.......2006-06-07

Here's another great installment in the Anna Pigeon, National Park Service Ranger, series, set in the Natchez Trace Parkway National Park. A local good ol' boy is found murdered on NPS land, and the usual suspects are brought in for questioning. Doyce Barnette, the victim, hasn't engendered much emotion in anyone he knew in life, so Anna is unable to easily find a motive. Doyce's brother, the local undertaker and Sheriff wannabee, is a good bet because he stands to inherit and is a slimy character as well, but that may be too easy an answer. Added to this mystery is the bigger question of who wants Anna dead, as she survives a couple of near-death accidents. Her colleagues in the NPS office are suspect, as one is a friend and one is a proven foe. Watching Anna deal with her managerial tasks is a hoot as she is not a paper-pusher but a do-er. Also, watching the developing romance between Anna and sheriff Paul Davidson brings to light another side of Anna previously neglected, and shows that Barr can write strong personal fiction in addition to straight suspense. Recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Back to Mississippi.......2006-03-25

This is a unique series in that the lead character never changes, but her geography and the minor characters are always different as she moves about from national park to national park. This time out, we got to revisit the Natchez Trace Parkway, where ranger Anna Pigeon was last on duty in "Deep South." It kind of made me wish we could keep going back to Mississippi for more, because keeping this book in the same locale as another made it feel more homey and familiar, rather than a bit lonely like the other books.

Anna is called for assistance when an aide finds a body in a historic building on park lands. It's middle-aged, overweight local Doyce Barnette, who has been stripped down to his tighty-whiteys and left on a bed, a dire passage circled in red ink in a Bible in the room. Doyce also has some strange bruising on his body that indicates possible bizarre sex games might have led to his death. An investigation into his life doesn't support his interest in such activities, though, and things aren't adding up. Doyce had two living relatives, his mother and his brother, who is also the local mortician. His only close friends appear to be his poker-playing buddies, who don't seem all that close to him. Anna and Sheriff Clintus Jones's investigation doesn't seem to be turning up much in the way of useful evidence, and every witness interview they attempt goes awry courtesy of annoying ranger Randy Thigpen, Anna's nemesis on the job.

Anna's personal life is again in turmoil, too, as the man she has fallen for is not only a lawman, but also a priest, and a married one at that. Ranger Thigpen tells Anna he's turning over a new leaf, hoping that his last few months before retirement can be peaceful ones, and Anna grudgingly agrees to give him a chance. Her other ranger, Barth Dinkins, plays a more peripheral role this time out, spending most of his time restoring a slave cemetery, which is also wound into the murder plot.

I had a very hard time putting this book down because I had a feeling I knew who the bad guy was very early on, but I couldn't be absolutely certain until the end. In addition, I had a niggling idea as to what led to Barnette's death, but couldn't quite put my finger on it. As usual, Anna finds herself in grave danger and has to use all her skills and wits to come out on top, which she does with aplomb. I have liked every book in the series, but this one was particularly fun for me, maybe because I was right about who Anna should be looking out for, and I knew it would lead to a gripping conclusion.

I'll be sorry not to return to the Natchez Trace Parkway next time I visit Anna Pigeon, but I like this series enough that I'll gladly follow her into murder and mayhem wherever she goes.

4 out of 5 stars A good but not great Anna Pigeon.......2005-05-02

I run a little hot and cold with Nevada Barr's books, usually based on the location of the mystery. Her device is to set mysteries in and around the national park system and I find myself especially drawn to her books when they're about places I've been (duh!). I've never been to the Natchez Trace Parkway, and although it sounds lovely, I don't have much interest. That makes it hard to review this book objectively because the Parkway is a main character. But the book is quite good. Anna Pigeon, our now-familiar park ranger is extremely likeable and, as a woman and something of a rebel, she encounters some very ordinary problems in her workplace. And she encounters some very unusual murders outside her workplace. The story moves along nicely and there is a real intensity to the relationships in this book - and I don't just mean death and romance. This is a neck of the woods where not everyone has bought into the Civil Rights movement or equality for women. And the nice thing about it is that Nevada Barr portrays these redneck jerks without an ounce of condescension. They are what they are. And some of them get "educated". And some of them get away with it. And therein lies a pretty good book.

Edwin Kreiss is a former FBI agent whose discovery of a Chinese espionage ring made him a lot of enemies and resulted in his early retirement. Now his daughter is missing, and nobody, least of all a junior G-woman named Janet Carter, is going to keep him from finding her. Browbeating the one clue to her disappearance out of a terrified college student, Kreiss follows his daughter's trail to a deactivated federal arsenal in southwestern Virginia, where a fanatic whose son was immolated at Waco is cooking up a plan to blow the ATF to bits.

Kreiss is uniquely qualified to play his role as hunter-in-chief. He's been trained as a "sweeper," a job title that refers to the cleanup of rogue agents and other enemies of the state, and he took a few high-tech search-and-destroy goodies with him when he was prematurely put out to pasture by his former employers. Now another sweeper wants to put him out of action, and Janet Carter's getting conflicting signals from her own superiors about just how much cooperation they're willing to give Kreiss as he sets out to rescue his daughter--and, incidentally, redeem his own troubled past.

P.T. Deutermann is a skillful writer who knows how to tell a story. This briskly paced thriller almost turns the pages by itself. Carter, the ostensible heroine of the novel, never quite extinguishes her ambivalence about either Kreiss or the agency she serves, an attempt at multidimensionality of character that's more confusing than revealing. The ending hints at a continued relationship between them, but it's Kreiss, rather than Carter, who engages the reader's attention and whose future we really care about. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Edward Kreiss is a retired FBI agent-a man hunter whose specialty was making rogue operatives disappear. When Kreiss's daughter vanishes in the backwoods of rural West Virginia, and the FBI has no leads to follow, Kreiss follows his own-with a vengeance. Exercising the lethal maneuvers that made him the best "sweeper" in the business, Kreiss plunges back into action-this time as the dangerous loner he was once trained to kill. Unknown to Kreiss, a corrupt agency brass has their own reasons for keeping the kidnapping low-profile-and making the job of eliminating Kreiss, high priority. Called in to take him down is a deadly female assassin with a killer instinct that surpasses that of her prey. Now, as hunter becomes hunted, Kreiss finds himself and his daughter trapped in an elaborate game of political scandal and personal revenge. And whatever secret has been buried by Kreiss's elusive enemies, is sure to trigger open season on anyone who discovers it.AUTHORBIO: P.T. DEUTERMANN spent twenty-six years in government service before retiring to begin his writing career. He is the author of six previous novels. He lives with his wife on their family farm in Georgia.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great, fast-paced thriller.......2005-05-14

Deutermann's "Hunting Season" grabs hold of you with the very first sentence and doesn't let go until the end. A skillfully crafted story (albeit heavy on the federal government agency lingo at times) with so many twists and turns, it's hard to put down. Would love to see it made into a movie - it has all the makings for a big screen thriller.

5 out of 5 stars AN ABSORBING STORY SKILLFULLY PLOTTED.......2004-04-16

This time out Deutermann has crafted absorbing story of a father's search for his missing daughter.

Three college students are hiking around an abandoned military complex when presto - they disappear. The FBI soon chalks it up to a youthful runaway.

However, one father knows better, and he's not your typical parent-next-door. Edwin Kriess is a former member of a special CIA group that was trained to find and capture. He's determined to trace his daughter's abductors, and sets about doing so.

The FBI doesn't look kindly upon his investigations - he may have too much information, and what will he discover? Thus, the tracker becomes the tracked when the FBI dispatches someone to ferret out the truth from Kniess.

It's a trigger sharp, twisting yarn, skillfully woven.

4 out of 5 stars Just as entertaining the second time around!.......2003-08-27

This was the first of P.T.'s books that I read that I found in a bag of second-hand books. I was immediately drawn to the story because I lived near Roanoke and Blacksburg, VA many years ago, when the "Ramsey Arsenal" was still open. From "Hunting Season" I learned about "sweepers" and other specially trained agents and the technology that is available to them as well as the difficult politics of "staying alive" as a Fed (or ex-Fed).
Most of the book takes place in and around the old arsenal and is well described. The underground syphon chamber that was used to flush away bad batches of toxic chemicals was interesting but the various scenarios surrounding it were a bit much as was the constant vehicle switching. But the story is great, and I am reading it for the second time, after 9/11. This book has it all-FBI, CIA, ATF, mountain men, and all the "toys" Kreiss uses that makes a gun unecessary.

5 out of 5 stars Exciting from page 1.......2003-02-13

This is a spectacular book. From the opening scene until the conclusion, this book held my attention like few others have.

Deutermann does a great job of creating characters that the reader feels for. I really cared about the characters. I wanted Kreiss to find his daughter and thwart the bad guy, I wanted Janet Carter to succeed. And, although I could see it coming a mile away, I was not disappointed that Kreiss and Carter linked romantically.

There are some great plot twists and numerous conflicts happening simultaneously that made me keep reading page after page.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense thrillers.

3 out of 5 stars Good Solid Thriller with some serious problems.......2002-12-30

A ripping yarn, but it is clear the author has an agenda which might at first be budget problems or turf wars for the Feds. Or maybe he justed hated Janet Reno. He doesn't let political facts stand in the way of his imagination, which is okay.

His FBI is bunch of incompentent fumblers. His heroine has seven years experience with the Fibbies, but sure is dense when it comes to being briefed by "horse holders."

Then again, there is the problem of basic procedure which regard to the baddies. Uh, wouldn't one imagine that some law enforcement agency would be able to call up background check on ol' Jared and know pretty quickly that his Daddy died in WACO.

I think so....and I think life you love male oriented adventure fiction with a hard right wing skrew, the logic and procedural problems will not bother the reader too much.

I am fussy about accuracy in police precedurals, but Deutermann has an instinctive understanding of plotting, and a pretty good handle on pacing and dialogue.

Perfect for that long plane ride to nowhere. And lot better than Tom Clancy hack jobs.

Turkeys, Joe Hutto writes, have gotten a bad rap for being, well, stupid creatures. In his account of a year spent studying a flock of wild turkeys in the loblolly pine woods of Florida, he aims to improve their reputation. They are, he notes, masters of disguise, blending in with their surroundings in ways so subtle as to make the work of predators--especially human hunters--difficult. And, he writes, they are "curious to a fault, want a working understanding of every aspect of their surroundings, and their memory is impeccable." His affectionate portrait may not convince English speakers to stop calling each other turkeys, but it will make welcome reading for birders and wildfowl enthusiasts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT ANIMAL FRIENDSHIP BOOK.......2007-02-20

I loved this book about Mr Hutto spending a season with wild turkeys and befriending them. I read an earlier version of this paperback the year before last and I loved and absolutely enjoyed it. There should be more kindhearted animal loving people in the world like Mr. Hutto. I also loved the illustrations in this book. They are phenomenal. I loved the story and the photographs. Well written. If you love a book about wild animals, or animals period, this book is for you. Not only is this man a great writer but also a great photographer and illustrator/artist as well. A MUST READ.

5 out of 5 stars Illumination In the Flatwoods.......2006-09-12

Although I could not afford to purchase this book, I was delighted to get a copy from my library. I love the animal/human relationship, esp. when taken to its magical realm; the doors that open when entrusted by an animal. The sketches are sweet, simple and relay so much feeling; they are art. For a human to reach for this level of relationship is remarkable and to have it returned by animals is magical. Esp. the last par.: "...by some language that we both understand but cannot speak, and I could say: 'I know you, old friend. I recognize you by your iridescence, your incandescence, your illumination - I recognize you by your loneliness-you must be my brother.'" This book is a sort of recollection of who we are - our purpose. I love the double meaning of illuminated.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful story.......2005-07-04

I believe this book is now out of print and I cannot imagine why. I have been a reader of nature oriented literature all of my life and feel that this is among the top 10 or 15. Extremely moving account of a biologists relationship with a group of wild turkeys raised and imprinted by the author. Read this!!

5 out of 5 stars Joe Hutto, writer extraordinaire.......2003-11-14

This is an incredibly beautifully written book. I never thought I would find it so interesting and spellbinding. I was doubtful when first beginning the book that the author would be able to maintain his observer status, but he did so remarkably well, raising the turkeys to be real wild turkeys. As I read the final line in the book, I felt I was closing a chapter in my life in which I had personally been involved with the turkeys and the author. I was impressed with Mr. Hutto's dedication to these remarkable birds, his keen observations, and also with his obvious "connection" to them. I hope he will write again in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Simply inspiring and heartfelt........2002-06-03

Beautifully written and truly amazing feat accomplished by Mr. Hutto. Many can raise wild turkeys in their own world, however, it took a man with great conviction and love for the bird and it's environment to reverse the process and let the poults raise him. I couldn't put this book down and fell in love with the characters. In closing, I truly admire Mr. Hutto for his dedication and am thankful I don't hunt anywhere near TurkeyBoy's range as I don't believe I could pull the trigger on a bird that has survived the perils he has faced throughout his life.

Full of fascinating characters, adventure and excitement, it also deals truthfully with the hard lessons learned about the future of hunting in Africa. This is a day by day description of the events, places and people who make the safari industry work in Zimbabwe. If you want to know what really happens behind the scenes in order for a safari to occur, then this is a book for you. You'll travel the bush with the author, getting to know the professional hunters and clients, company employees, local villagers, and learn just how much work it takes to run a safari operation in a third world country. Fuel shortages, poaching, war vets seizing property, broken rifles, snakes, charging elephants, and wounded buffalo were all in a day's work. This is a rare look at the behind the scenes efforts to make a client's dreams come true. this deluxe paperback features non stop action, observations on the current political situation in Zimbabwe, as well as the stories of citizens forced to deal with the realities of life in Africa. 5 out of 5 stars Awesome read, kept me turning pages.......2006-07-04

I found this book very interesting, from the way the author writes, to the interesting views into what happens "behind the scenes" in the safari business. I found interesting the work that goes on with problem animals and the detailed accounts of tracking game before the clients arrive and after the shot is fired. I am not a big hunter but found it very interesting. I have already recommended it to some of my friends that hunt more often because I know they will enjoy it.

I bought this book for my husband, who is a hunter, while I most definetly am not. He couldn't put the book down, and after he finished I thought I would read a page or two.
I found I couldn't put it down either, and while the hunting didn't interest me I found so much more in the book to enjoy.
The author brings to life the people and places of Zimbabwe, and I began to care a great deal about the people he met and wrote of.
The writing is fast paced, exciting, and leaves one wishing there were more. So much so that I'm considering joining my husband on his next African safari.

        Book Description

Blood Lure (Bill Weideman, Melissa Coates): In Blood Lure, Anna returns to the West, where she is sent on a training assignment to study grizzly bears in Waterton/Glacier National Peace Park. But back in her beloved mountains, where the air is pure and cool, Anna fails to find the spiritual renewal she expected. Instead, nature seems to have become twisted, carrying a malevolence almost human in its focus.

Hunting Season (Ruth Bloomquist, Melissa Coates): When Anna answers a call to historic Mt. Locust, the last thing she expects to encounter is murder. But the man Anna finds in the stand's old bedroom is no tourist in distress. He's nearly naked, and very dead, his body bearing marks consistent with an S & M ritual gone awry. When hidden agendas and old allegiances are revealed, it's suddenly Anna's life on the line.

Flashback (Ruth Bloomquist, Mikael Naramore): Running from a proposal of marriage from Sheriff Paul Davidson, Anna Pigeon takes a post as a temporary supervisory ranger on remote Garden Key in Dry Tortugas National Park. This island paradise served as a prison for the Lincoln conspirators during and after the Civil War. When a mysterious boat explosion - and the discovery of unidentifiable body parts - keeps her anchored to the present, Anna finds crimes of past and present closing in on her. A tangled web that was woven before she arrived begins to threaten her sanity and her life.
