Nick Morrelli is the Platte City, Nebraska, sheriff who must be smarter than he appears, since there's a framed Harvard law degree hanging on his wall. Not that appearances don't count. The reader is treated to a number of descriptions of his sexy, lady-killer looks and his charismatic effect on even the most hard-bitten woman character in this somewhat muddled, serial-killer thriller. Nick is investigating the kidnap-murders of two young Platte City boys when FBI profiler Maggie O'Dell shows up and all but takes over the investigation. Several years earlier, the former sheriff--Nick's father--capped his own career with the arrest of the last serial killer in the neighborhood, who abducted and tortured three boys in an eerily similar crime spree. When Antonio Morrelli returns from retirement to meddle in the investigation, and when Nick's own sister uses her connections to advance his career, Nick hardly raises an objection. And that's the central weakness of what would otherwise be a good, first effort. --Jane Adams

Book Description

A killer is watching . . .

The brutal murders of three young boys paralyze the citizens of Platte City, Nebraska. What's worse is the grim realization that the man recently executed for the crimes was a copycat. When Sheriff Nick Morrelli is called to the scene of another grisly murder, it becomes clear that the real predator is still at large, waiting to kill again.

Morreli understands the urgency of the case terrorizing his community, but it's the experienced eye of FBI criminal profiler Maggie O'Dell that pinpoints the true nature of the evil behind the killings -- a revelation made all the more horrific when Morrelli's own nephew goes missing.

Maggie understands something else: the killer is enjoying himself, relishing his ability to stay one step ahead of her, making this case more personal by the hour. Because out there, watching, is a killer with a heart of pure and perfect evil.

4 out of 5 stars A page turner.......2006-10-12

The writing was really good, and I would give it a 5 star rating, except the ending was really disappointing. It is quite obvious that it's a complete set up for another book.

1 out of 5 stars Perfect-ly Pap: a great advert for libraries.......2006-05-18

Do you want to read a book written for those without imagination? This surely has to be it. Cliched characters are ineptly drawn, and following a formula even Hollywood is tiring of: a tall, dark, handsome playboy sheriff, and a shapely, gorgeous FBI agent. Of course there's romance in the air!

Only the bad guys are ugly - or at least I presume so, as they don't get much of a description at all. But then, nor does anything else, resulting in a poor sense of place. Many authors go out of their way to give a sense of place, but not Kava. Contrast Kava's work with that of John Connolly whose prose is delightful and vivid; or that of Crais, whose work is a little sparser than Connolly's and the difference will be profound.

It was a labor, getting through this book, with repeated instances of point-of-view changes, often within a paragraph. In one place, it wasn't even possible to tell whom the author was referring-to as the paragraph contained references to several characters, all addressed as "she".

The book reads like a first draft, and the lack of careful (or it seems at times, any,) editing is obvious. Kava likes to use impactful verbs, but really, three instances of "grabbed" in the space of five lines demonstrates a vocabulary most high-school students would surpass and a quality of writing that just as many would turn up their noses at.

It would take little research to discover that "goals" are scored in soccer, not "points." But that too, seems beyond Kava's limited expertise.

Some readers spurn genre fiction as demonstrating too much telling and not enough showing. This novel can be held up as an example of all that those critics wish to bleat about.

I am so glad I didn't by this book, instead borrowing it from a library, as I wouldn't even want it on any of my shelves. I'd rather reserve that space for worthwile books by authors who craft - rather than draft - their prose. This book is now back in the library, and the money I would have spent on it remains firmly in my wallet.

4 out of 5 stars Not So Perfect.......2006-03-11

Alex Kava writes a strong, church related mystery with Maggie O'Dell being the lynchpin that holds the whole story together.
The only element that stresses credulity is Kava's sexual innuendoes between Maggie and Nick( each brush is stunning, each
accidental touch electric and hinting of dirty, dirty thoughts.)
And she slips these in every chapter the two share.
Ignore these silly bumps in the night and you have an entertaining novel. I just ordered "A Necessary Evil"...
Let's hope the heat between Nick and Maggie has settled into a serious affection.

4 out of 5 stars Reviews by Nan Kilar and Bobby Miller.......2006-02-09

This contemporary story takes place in Platte City, Nebraska, a bedroom community a short distance from Omaha. In July, Ronald Jeffreys was put to death, having been convicted of murdering three young boys six years ago. In his final moments, he confessed to Father Francis he had killed only one of the three.

It's now close to Halloween and a young boy has disappeared and is found murdered. The FBI calls in Maggie O'Dell, a profiler. Shortly after she arrives another youngster disappears and is found dead. The similarities between these two murders and two of the murders Jeffreys was convicted of are too many to be ignored. Then a third boy disappears. Was Jeffreys really put to death? Did the real killer just lie in wait for six years to start over again? How many other people will be killed?

There are several on-going subplots, but you're never confused about what's going on. They definitely keep the reader interested...the chemistry between Maggie and Nick Morrelli, the local Sheriff; Christine Hamilton's (Nick's sister) journalism career; Antonio Morrelli's (Nick's father and former Sheriff) intrusion into the case; the questionable priest and janitor at the local Catholic church. This is good story, especially for the author's first novel.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Series.......2005-12-23

I really enjoyed reading the O'Dell series by Alex Kava. I can't wait until A Necessary Evil comes out. This is a great book, all of them are great reads. If you do read them make sure you read them in order: A Perfect Evil, Split Second, Soul Catcher, At The Stroke of Madness, and coming in February 2006 A Necessary Evil. These are page turning books that you just can't get tired of reading. They were so good, I read all four within a month!

4 out of 5 stars Intriguing romantic mystery.......2007-09-17

Widow Hannah Stuart has taken refuge in the mansion of millionaire antiques dealer Milo Biehle. Upon his deathbed, Milo informs Hannah that she is his sole beneficiary, but that a series of letters will probably change how she feels about him forever. Milo's lawyer Gerry Vonecker is also out to get the letters for a client who will stop at nothing including murder to see that the contents remains a secret. Forensic accountant Yates Lang is hired by Vonecker's law partners due to some suspicious contracts he has drafted for a shady businessman. Yates discovers that the businessman in question is his nemesis, Morgan Greff, estranged cousin of Milo, who has now set his sights on Hannah. When Hannah and Yates meet, they are instantly attracted to each other. Neither plans to act on that attraction but Yates knows that keeping tabs on Hannah means Morgan cannot harm her. When Hannah opens the letters, her world is forever shifted, and she no longer knows who she can trust.

Sheedy has created a great romantic suspense with so many plot turns that the reader can't help but remain captivated. Great secondary characters like an Irish cook, ne'er do well stepdaughter, and a lover who won't be swindled help to move the story along at a breathtaking pace.

4 out of 5 stars A harrowing but awesome Murder Mystery.......2004-03-03

Wealthy, eccentric Milo Biehle has died. Before his death he had cajoled his faithful assistant, Hannah Stuart, into executing his final wishes. There is nothing she wouldn't do for Milo, whose kindness, affection and protection had saved her life. Hannah begins fulfilling his requests, one by one, starting with Milo's mother, Miranda. Has Milo knowingly put Hannah in danger with his requests?

Yates Lang has made a reputation for himself, both with his detective work and the ladies. But his work means more to him than any dame. Yates is intrigued when it looks like there might be some shady involvement on the part of his employers, the exclusive and highbrow law firm of Simpson, Chapman, and Vonecker in connection with some cases . Drugs, murder, money, and white slavery are all good reasons to go poking your nose where it doesn't belong. And better yet when you find out you have a score to settle.....

Gerry Vonecker, Milo's lawyer, had been at the house, gathering documents and making Hannah a very wealthy woman and owner of Kenninghall. Vonecker soon discovers himself between a rock and a hard place when a vicious client wants a missing deed and is willing to do whatever is necessary to obtain it. Which clients do you keep happy?? The ones paying you or the ones who will make YOU pay? As Vonecker questions Hannah about any documents he may have missed, she remembers the letters Milo had shown her. Milo had warned her that the letters might one day cause her to hate and despise him and she should wait to distribute them until she felt "ready". She has unexplainable reservations about the mysterious letters and keeps her own counsel about their existence. Her silence may very well work against her. How far will someone go to find out the truth? And how far will someone go to hide it?

E.C. Sheedy offers an assortment of characters whom have carved out individual niches in this tale of an elusive deed, suave charmers, unscrupulous relatives, a remarkable heroine, a fearless hero, murders and mayhem - all are the perfect ingredients to create a delightful, fast moving whodunit, full of unexpected twists and turns. The marvelous, mystical Miranda is only one of many in this cast of characters who come to life. They will make you laugh at their human foibles, and cry over their despair. You might pity the ones who revel in their despicable actions and wonder at those whose misplaced loyalties are unwavering, while chilling shivers at the acts of PURE EVIL perpetuated by mankind crawl up your spine. In this reader's opinion, because this book lacks active sexual interaction between the primary characters, I cannot honestly recommend this as a good choice for an erotic-romantic- murder-mystery. HOWEVER, if you ARE looking for the perfect murder mystery that will grab you by the throat and have you mesmerized from the first page to the last, THIS definitely tops my reading list. Read it with the lights on......

The Resident Evil 3 Nemesis Perfect Guide is exactly what it says; perfect!!! My friend and I are avid Resident Evil gamers and this guide was helpful in every aspect. The walkthrough, maps, item locator, character discription, and virtually everything else we could find in this game was in this guide. There was also a walkthrough for the bonus mercinary mode and conception sketches and all. A must for fans.

9-11 Evil provides another investigative view of the events which took place on September 11, 2001.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Nine-Eleven, Oy Vey!.......2006-09-13

At the outset, let me state that there are compelling nuggets of information in Victor Thorn's slim volume pointing to the conclusion that the state of Israel was directly complicit in the attacks on the US on September 11, 2001. The Bush administration is packed with those holding Israeli passports, and they no doubt saw the benefits of such an attack once Vern and Edna woke from their television-induced stupor and began to call for the blood of Israel's neighbors. Granted. Most of us who have been following the 9/11 cover-up saga were aware of the so-called "Dancing Israelis," among other things. Thorn does manage to corral all those stray elements to add weight to the implication of Israel in the attacks.

That's as far along that road as I'm willing to go with Thorn. If a group ever forms calling itself Brown Shirts for 9/11 Truth, 9-11 Evil is bound to be its lodestar. There is so much pure Jew-hatred in this book that it could be shelved alongside Mein Kampf with no discomfort to either. He writes of "twisted DNA" and "blood sickness" in a manner that would do old Adolf proud. At the end of the book he trots out a series of bullet points that offer the usual anti-Semitic chestnuts--blood sacrifice, Christ-killing, and the "demonic" nature of the Talmud. He makes sure to mention how the Jews despise the blacks. (If that's so, why did Jews spend most of the Twentieth Century playing and promoting black music? Or were George Gershwin, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Joe Glaser, and Irving Mills anomalies?)

This book is not calculated to convince an impartial observer--it is directly aimed at the jack-booted or percale-clad malcontents meeting in undisclosed wooded locations. Thorn amps up the hyperbole, and is a veritable Waring Blendor of Heavy Metal metaphor and tattoo-parlor imagery--"these slithering vipers will leave no stone unturned in covering-up their crimes and furthering their agenda." Leaving no stone unturned is pretty tough work for vipers, since they don't have hands.

I might have made some different word choices, too--"those in control will truly feel victorious when they no longer have to hide in the shadows, but can come out into the open and expose themselves." A truly distressing scenario, especially if there are children present.

Thorn also decries Bush's (Zionist inspired) Hegelian Dialectic: You're either with us or you're with the terrorists. Fine, but he supplants it with a Hegelian whatchamacallit of his own--you're either with us or you're with the Jews.

Though I like Victor Thorn and am thankful for all he's done to prove the controlled demolition of the WTC buildings and to clear up the mystery of Flight 93, here I think he veers totally off base. He stands to taint all his earlier excellent research into the events of 9/11 with the bigoted diatribes in this mean, sloppy little book. Despite its lack of footnotes or citations, I admit I got some worthwhile bits of information from it. But I will not enter his Hegelian Jew-punching contest.

I don't think you can single out one race of people. The rank-and-file Israelis have as much control over their government as we have over ours--exactly none. My sense is that the elites of ALL nations are playing us against each other, but for them it's intramural. It's a scrimmage. Then, when it's an unholy bloody mess, they'll call time out, knock down the borders, and impose their "improving" world dictatorship. And Fred over there with the horns can be Dictator.

3 out of 5 stars Could be so much better if..........2006-09-02

the whole thing wasn't one long rant with more exclamation marks than needed!!! The facts already speak volumes without the need to overemphasize information that in itself is weighty. I knew most of the information in the book already so I just wanted to read it to gauge how other more skeptical folks would take to it, especially Israel apologists, but also those on the fence or in the 'unknow,' which is most Americans. Unfortunately, Thorn has given them much to work with here. Outside of the whining, there are no cited sources, there are no chapters or indices, it just seems thrown together. And that's really too bad because once you sift through all the personal bias, opinions, imaginary scenarios and exclamation points, the information contained in this book is pretty good and especially needs to be known. I would recommend less opinion and more facts, but then maybe it would simply be a bulleted pamphlet of simple facts. But that sort of read sits well with most busy Americans anyway.

Other issues I found troubling and unnecessary is, for example, Thorn's need to include his personal position on such issues as abortion (he's pro-life apparently)--you can have whatever opinion you want but what does that have to do with 9/11? He lost me there, and he'll no doubt lose others as well, and that's not what any author should want especially when he's working to get the word out that we have an evil among us that needs to be exposed and stopped (did I need an exclamation mark there, ya think?).

Thorn must know by now that any time you attempt anything like this, you MUST be extremely careful and studious to do it right, because even then, you'll still be attacked, but the critics will have less to work with if you follow normal or rather, above board protocol. I still recommend that people read the book if they aren't aware of the evidence that proves Israel's orchestration of 9/11, and I also recommend that you don't become skeptical simply because Thorn quotes from sources that have a tendency to slant toward a "whiter America" because what these folks also do is work to protect an America they think exists, and that includes outsiders whose goals are to harm and exploit this country for their own nation's benefit.

So overall, the information is 5 stars, but the approach is 1, and that averages 3 stars.

I didn't know what to expect. As it turns out this book caused me some trouble: I had several rough mornings at work from reading too long the night before and my wife got upset with me because I woke her up several times laughing uncontrollably at some of these stories. This is one of the most entertaining books I have read in many years and I had trouble putting it down. My only real complaint is that the show COPS, which I always loved, seems boring to me now. Rich Nable has impressive writing skills, an outstanding sense of humor, and will leave you wanting more.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!.......2003-12-04

This book should be required reading for all new police officers. Every brand new cop could easily gain 2 years experience by the time they finish reading it. Anyone who has even a slight curiosity about the job would be able to learn what it "feels" like to do this kind of work. Richard has done a super job of putting the reader right next to him while he patrols the streets and lays the smackdown on Evil. A great book with great lessons!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This book has it all.......2003-11-15

........, drugs, rock n roll, violence, blood, guts, humor, philosophy, tactics, and any thin else you can think of.

4 out of 5 stars 10 times better then the COPS tv show.......2003-11-02

I teach Criminal Justice at a local college, and after reading this work, I am going to make it required reading for my students and here is why: The author. Richard Nable, was able to capture prefectly, the essence of what is like to sit in a patrol car during a high speed chase, the sense of acomplishment of "capturing evil" as he puts it, and he then interjects humor throughout the whole book that makes you want to go to your local police station and grab an application. This is an excellent book, and I can not write enough stars nor tell you in words how good this book is. If you want to know about Police Officers, or just wonder what it would be like for one night in a patrol car, I highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars This one's a "Grabber".......2003-10-21

Incredible reading, captures you right from the beginning. Perfect for the "COPS" watchers or the cops themselves(and all their friends and family). This book definitely "GRABS" your attention...you will not be able to stop reading. Lots of humor and amazing stories, you'll want to read again and again!!!!

        Product Description

Evil. It is refreshingly delicious and fun. There is a certain adrenaline rush that surges through my veins whenever I vanquish an adventurer or paladin that has had the audacity to challenge me or invade my home. Nothing is more satisfying than dashing the hopes and beliefs of a holy cleric when he finds out that his god doesn t really care about him or to see the look of surprise on the face of a rogue as I catch him unaware and deliver a mortal blow. Being evil means you command the respect of others. They may hate you, fear you, vilify you, and even dare to oppose you, but they will acknowledge the power you wield and the control you exert. With a simple wave of my hand or nod of my head, I condemn a person to a lifetime of torture or a quick death, depending upon my mood. I can enslave anyone upon a whim or allow him to just pass beneath my notice. Even fiends and infernal creatures seek me out to form pacts and agreements that will benefit both parties. Through careful manipulations I have caused wars between kingdoms and then rode in with my armies in the aftermath to claim rule. Being evil means you strive for a single ultimate goal; absolute power. Absolute power means none can oppose you. All you desire is within your grasp. Those foolish enough to oppose you or stand between your goals are destroyed as an example to all others who harbor such rebellious thoughts. Power is everything. It is what drives your very soul. -- Shi Kahr Darkstarr, Lord of Tonaga Welcome to Gothos and the realms of the Dark Walkers. In this book you will explore new rules and options available for actively playing characters who are evil at heart. Darkwalkers: The Evil Within contains new player character core classes, races, prestige classes, feats, magic items, and spells, all with a decidedly evil slant. Designed for the Hunt: Rise of Evil campaign setting created by Mystic Eye Games, Darkwalkers: The Evil Within is suitable for use in any fantasy campaign world. So explore the secret societies, dark deities, infernal pacts, new templates, and minions that will aid you in your quest for power and dominance. Join the Hunt and eliminate the Children of the Waking Dream. Being good may be the right and honorable thing to do, but evil is more fun...
