Tim LaHaye does it again.......2007-09-05
Tim LaHaye has a way with blending fiction into biblical prophecy. His stories are fast-paced, and hard to put down.
"The Edge of Darkness" tells of the fast approaching time of the anti-christ. This series is a must read for everybody.
When will book 5 be out?.......2007-08-30
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book but as with the others it did not conclude. The way scripture is woven into the story line makes it interesting and I believe will lead to further investigation by those not familiar with the themes. A good thing.
Unable to Review .......2007-08-28
I do not have a review as I did not receive the book. The order was cancelled by Amazon stating that they could not deliver the item to the address listed. This is strange as I have received other books at the same address. I was not very happy about it. I will now have to go and purchase it at the Barnes & Noble store.
This series keeps getting more and more disappointing..........2007-06-13
I was a huge fan of the first book in the Babylon Rising series, but I feel that the subsequent novels--including and especially this one--have slowly but surely been going downhill. The Edge of Darkness and the third book, The Europa Conspiracy, have lacked the action of the first book, and even of the second book, The Secret on Ararat. This novel also consisted mainly of lackluster dialogue and ridiculously simple thoughts on the part of its characters, along with childish comparisons (such as toward the end of the book, when the Seven are comparing their actions to fountains etc. at the Chateau de Versailles) that served as a constant annoyance.
Also, Tim Lahaye kills off many important characters in this Babylon Rising installation. I won't name names because I don't want to spoil things for anyone who hasn't read this book yet, but I feel that it's a bit late for the authors to start introducing new MAIN characters into the series, which is what they will have to do now that all but a couple of its main characters are dead. The authors need to go back to the basics of what made the first Babylon Rising book, and even the second one, the hits that they were.
"Edge of Darkness" keeps you on Edge of Seat.......2007-05-08
As with this whole series this an excellent book. I look forward to any more that this serious might produce.

Tim Lahaye book series.......2007-09-08
I ordered and received in excellent time all 4 of Tim Lahaye books. All were received at the very best price and in excellent condition.
Cartoonish.......2007-05-15
This is an entertaining light read for teens, with a very superficial "good guys vs. bad guys" kind of plot. The villians are all evil mustache-twirling types who threaten puppies, have an affinity for red lighting, and sneer at people. (They reminded me of Klingons.)
Along the way, the hero gets to deliver lectures and monologues on various Christian topics such as the folly of evolution, etc. On repeated occasions, people come to him with their problems, and he delivers a word or two of advice from the Bible to make their troubles instantly vanish. Those who question the hero are easily refuted and left sputtering with no response. The whole thing is a series of softballs and straw men to make the hero seem even more "good." There's not a lot of depth to the characters to engage the reader.
There is also a lot of violence in the book, many characters are shot at, pummeled, trapped, threatened, killed, etc. in various ways. While the good guys have to spend weeks climbing Mount Ararat, setting up three base camps, packing in supplies, and dealing with crevasses, avalanches, slipped ropes, weather, etc. along the way, somehow the villian is able to show up right at the critical moment on the summit - how did HE get there? (Perhaps he is a supernatural being?) Fortunately several of the characters who die manage to accept Christ just before they are killed - so it's not so bad...
Like I said, in my opinion this is light, simplistic entertainment for teens, there are a lot of Bible lessons and admonitions presented in a thinly-veiled series of sermons. But for adults, this is shallow reading.
Disappointed........2007-02-10
Where "Babylon Rising" actually inspired me to pick a Bible and read the to Book of Daniel this book didn't inspire me to read my Bible at all. The story was okay but tended to get bogged down with the side stories about the relationship issues among supporting characters. I look forward to the next book but hope that it will inspire me more.
Babylon Rising: The Secret on Ararat.......2007-01-19
Well crafted story! Hope the author continues with more adventures for the main character!!
Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful...........2006-11-05
This book was well....Wonderful! I picked it up on a Thursday and finished reading it the very next day. I was very disappointed when it ended. This book came alive to me and I felt that I was actually there with the fictional characters, and the Non-fictional characters (Noah and his family while on the ark). Lahaye did an absolutley wonderful job. I enjoyed the Left Behind series, (even though it is not scriptually correct in the most important area of getting saved after the rapture after you have already denied Christ)But this series is alot more captivating to me. I highly recommend this book!
Book Description
Tim LaHaye has called Babylon Rising his most exciting series ever, and
The Europa Conspiracy is the most thrilling and suspenseful installment yet. Reaching back to some of the most dramatic and prophetically significant stories of the Bible, and forward to the creation of ultimate evil in the modern world, the awe-inspiring revelations never let up. It begins when Michael Murphy heads to the ancient city of Babylon in pursuit of one of the most famous and mystifying of Biblical prophecies: The Handwriting on the Wall. But the closer he gets to deciphering the true meaning of Daniel’s ancient message for our troubled times, the closer Murphy comes to a shattering confrontation with the forces of darkness that will cause the earth itself to tremble.
In
The Europa Conspiracy, Tim LaHaye once again shows how his thrill-a-minute storytelling and deep understanding of the Bible have combined to make him one of today’s most popular and influential fiction authors.

great book!.......2007-05-07
As usual, another great book from Tim LaHaye. Not too nuts about the ending, but that just means i have to buy the next book :)
Third Installment in the Babylon Rising Series.......2007-01-25
The third book in Tim LaHaye's Babylon Rising series once again pits biblical archeologist Michael Murphy against the indefatigably evil Talon and the mysterious group of would-be world dominators known only as "The Seven." In book one, Murphy went in search of the golden head of King Nebuchadnezzar's famous statue and Moses' bronze serpent; book two found Murphy in Turkey searching for and ultimately finding Noah's Ark. In The Europa Conspiracy, Murphy is at it again, this time looking for the remains of King Belshazzar's writing on the wall.
The book, like the previous two, opens with Michael Murphy battling the sinister intent of his mischievous benefactor, Methuselah. When he finds the clue Methuselah left for him, Murphy instantly knows that his goal is the handwriting on the wall, and he makes plans to return to Babylon. Accompanying him is the beautiful Isis, with whom Murphy falls in love during the course of the story, the fact that she is not a Christian notwithstanding.
Murphy does in fact uncover the location of the handwriting on the wall with no difficulty whatsoever, since Methuselah tells him exactly where it is. Along the way, Murphy helps in thwarting a terrorist plot to blow up the Washington Bridge in New York and learns that the Antichrist has been born and is waiting to assume control of a yet-to-be-established one-world government as soon as the United Nations is relocated to Babylon.
Like its predecessors, The Europa Conspiracy is implausible, unengaging, and largely uncompelling. The characters are as shallow as ever, dialog reads like a high-school play, and the central premise teeters precariously on the border between merely unbelievable and patently ridiculous. The idea that an Illuminati-like group of seven anonymous yet nearly omnipotent individuals is directly responsible for everything from the state of the U.S. economy to the price of Middle Eastern oil to the decline of American morality is absurd.
One thing writer Bob Phillips does fairly well is action scenes, and the highlight of the book is an extended sequence in which Michael Murphy becomes aware of and assists in the dismantling of a terrorist plot to destroy New York's Washington Bridge. The book's cliffhanger of a closing scene is also fairly well done, except for the unforgivable editorial blunder of having a character switch back and forth between having been killed in a catastrophic earthquake and being safe and on the way home to his family. Periodic narrative flashbacks to the prophet Daniel's experiences in ancient Babylon are also of some interest.
Christian content is plentiful, though rather pedantic. The unexpected death of one of the key characters from a previous book adds a small amount of emotional drama (though not nearly as much as book 1, when Michael Murphy's wife was killed in a church bombing). The title refers to the plan of "The Seven" for the European Union (according to legend, the continent of Europe was named after Zeus's lover Europa) to take over the world.
Though it will likely be a best-seller based on name recognition alone, this book is a sophomoric followup to two mediocre prequels. It falls far short of the intrigue of the Left Behind series (LaHaye's phenomenally successful venture with writer Jerry Jenkins) and its quasi-juvenile writing and utter lack of careful editing or proofreading should ensure a quick trip to Bantam's backlist.
Darryl's Review.......2006-11-07
Another fine book in a good series. Quick read, good historical accuracy. Good plot and characters.
You might want to skip this one..........2006-10-06
Europa Conspiracy is, first and foremost, nowhere near as fast-paced as Babylon Rising or even The Secret on Ararat. I was terminally disappointed with this installment from beginning to end. Even as a Christian woman, I found it too preachy, and I felt as if Tim LaHaye "dumbed down" a lot of the Biblical and historical references/explanations in hopes of attracting a more diverse age group. It also seemed as if he was including very adolescent-sounding dialogue and these bad explanations as fillers to make the book longer, while leaving out the action that caught my attention in the first two books of the series. At this point, the only reason I will continue reading this series is because of the cliffhanger at the end of the novel.
A BOOK THAT OFFERS ALL WE NEED.......2006-08-26
Europa Conspiracy has the ability to entertain while instigating reflexion about the most disturbing realities of today's world.
Its references to the Bible urge us to search God's word as our ultimate guidance.

Book Description
Tim LaHaye created the Left Behind Series, which has become one of the most popular fiction series of all time. Those novels, with more that 50 million copies sold, presented a unique combination of suspense and substance drawn from his lifelong study of Biblical prophecy.
Now Tim LaHaye has created a new series that begins with
Babylon Rising. The novels in this new series are even faster-paced thrillers based on prophecies that are not covered in the Left Behind books and that have great relevance to the events of today.
Babylon Rising introduces a terrific new hero for our time. Michael Murphy is a scholar of Biblical prophecy, but not the sedate and tweedy kind. Murphy is a field archaeologist who defies danger to fearlessly hunt down and authenticate ancient artifacts from Biblical times. His latest discovery is his most amazing—but it will send him hurtling from a life of excavation and revelations to a confrontation with the forces of the greatest evil. For the latest secret uncovered by Michael Murphy accelerates the countdown to the time of the end for all mankind.

Entertainment that Challenges the mind.......2007-06-12
It is interesting the number of negative reviews. The book is pure entertainment and the next bend in the story. I feel the 4 books have been leading the readers to a final confrontation of Good verses Evil. Murphy is gifted in his way and yet, is forced to confront the forces of evil with his faith.
He is a reflection of us in that we do not know the full measure of faith we possess until we are confronted with our own challenges.
Looking forward to the next release!
Silly..........2007-03-22
I bought this book after hearing all the great things about the Left Behind series (which I have not read). I am fascinated by Biblical archaeology, and thought this would be a great read.
My mistake. Lahaye is trying much, much too hard write Indiana Jones. The characters are flat, and I didn't care about Murphy right from the start. He was just not engaging. The plotlines are implausible yes, but I don't view that as a fault in and of itself - that kind of implausibility, in a plucky, believable, FUN character is a joy to read. In Murphy's case, I couldn't have cared less whether LaHaye killed him off and gave his long-suffering wife a break.
The enjoyable part about characters like Indiana Jones is that the reader understands that it's all in good fun. This book contains the same type of events and situations, but without any of the tongue-in-cheek insanity. Instead, LaHaye tries deperately to force us to believe that things like that actually happen.
For example - in one scene, Murphy's wife is startled by something in a small cave, stumbles backward, and manages to fall directly into a narrow, vertical crevice that neither of them had noticed before. Sound familiar?! It's Dr. Jones all over again.
My main mistake was buying this book along with the sequel assuming that I would love it.
Babylon Rising Series.......2007-02-27
I am quite surprise by the many negative reviews of this series. I just completed the fourth book and have found the series highly enjoyable. Reviewers discount the storyline as unplausable. Well, no kidding. This is a fiction series written for entertainment. Perhaps, those reviewers are the type of people who will criticize every little detail in an action movie. Get over it and enjoy the story. I find the series very entertaining, filled with action and adventure and sprinkled with accurate biblical doctrine. Sure, it's frustrating to see Dr. Murphy's archaeological "prizes" being snatched from his grasp time and time again but this is the direction the authors chose to go. I find no "filler" pages boring nor uninspired. I applaud the series and look forward to future installments. Bravo for a job well done!
Disappointing Beginning to LaHaye's New Series.......2007-01-15
Babylon Rising is Tim LaHaye's first post-Left Behind fiction venture. Itself the start of a new series also called Babylon Rising, this book is the beginning of what Dr. LaHaye hopes will be another Left Behind-like phenomenon. In the introductory author's note, he writes, "I am more excited about Babylon Rising than any of my previous books. My prayer is that it will have the same effect on the lives of readers as have the Left Behind books." Unfortunately, he's not off to a very good start.
Babylon Rising is an adventure book featuring Michael Murphy, an Indiana Jones-like hero who is part archaeologist, part Bible scholar, part professor, and all man's man. The author is enamored enough of his character to write that he is "one of the real appeals of this series for me. I like Murphy so much, I named him after my son-in-law." Like an Indiana Jones movie, the story begins with Murphy engaged in an impossibly unlikely scenario involving a life-and-death struggle to obtain an archaeological artifact. Unlike an Indiana Jones movie, Murphy is not struggling against the elements or ancient tribes in a distant jungle or international terrorists; he is risking life and limb in a challenge issed by a mysterious and unlikely figure who is evidently intent on killing Murphy using the archaeologist's own desire to unearth prizes that help prove the truth of the Bible. As the story unfolds, Murphy, first accompanied by his amazingly gorgeous (of course) wife and later by an amazingly gorgeous female colleague, travels to Israel, Egypt, Iraq, and back again in his quest to discover an item of incredible power.
As an adventure story, Babylon Rising is reasonably acceptable, even though the writing by "co-author" Greg Dinallo (Tim LaHaye doesn't do any of the actual writing) is less than first rate. The story, though less than credible in the real world, is not beyond the bounds of what could fit within the world LaHaye has created for his characters. The real problems arise when one remembers that this is not just an adventure tale but an end-times prophecy story. The authors are not just writing down a plot created in their imaginations but presenting a scenario they feel could realistically become reality in the near future. Where the book nominally succeeds as an adventure fantasy, it fails miserably as a story of prophetic intrigue.
Probably the main reason the book doesn't work as a prophecy story is the lack of clear biblical foundation. In the Left Behind books, even if one disagrees with Dr. LaHaye's interpretation of the scriptural accounts, no question is left as to the specific passages from which the authors derived their timeline. In Babylon Rising, on the other hand, hardly any mention of specific Scripture passages can be found, except as they relate to the artifacts Murphy is searching for.
Another weakness of the book as a prophecy story has to do with the object of Murphy's quest. This particular artifact is mentioned only twice in the Bible and once in an apocryphal book, and it is never referred to as having any apocalyptic significance. Again, the lack of sound biblical foundation severely undermines the story's prophetic intent.
Yet another problem is LaHaye's evident subsciption to what I think of as alarmist, reactionary Evangelicalism. His premise that world events and the media are controlled by a shadowy, all-powerful group of throwbacks to ancient Babylon called "The Seven" is not an unfamiliar theme in stories like this. I was reminded of last year's movie Lara Croft, Tomb Raider, in which an archaeologist hero thwarts the evil plans for world domination of the mysterious Illuminati. But this book supposedly takes place in present-day reality, not a video-game world like Tomb Raider.
It is inevitable that many people will compare Babylon Rising to Left Behind co-author Jerry Jenkins's latest release, Soon. Both are apocalyptic; both are set prior to the Rapture; both involve a Christian hero fighting against evil forces in the world. One important difference is that Babylon Rising is supposed to take place today, while Soon is set in the near but decidedly different future. To me this gives LaHaye's book a degree of extra excitement and plausibility lacking in Soon. The irony is that while the present-day setting of the book works for the excitement level, the LaHaye's overactive conspiracy-theory imagination and underactive biblical storyline detract from that effectiveness.
Another way that Babylon Rising reminds me of Left Behind are some of the practical difficulties in the plot. For example, Murphy and his wife have no trouble getting to Israel and then into the Palestinian-controlled West Bank for an archeological dig. Later, Murphy is able to get into Iraq without trouble, even recruiting a group of U.S. soldiers to assist them with their work. Murphy also travels throughout the Middle East with another scholar named Isis McDonald, an apparent future love interest, who also is unsurprisingly beautiful. There is no concern that a Christian man traveling with a beautiful non-Christian woman might pose any potential problems. Media tycoon Shane Barrington is tough enough to build a corporate empire but somehow submits without a fight to the devilish will of The Seven when they threaten to expose his underhanded financial dealings. Murphy never asks anyone to sign a confidentiality agreement regarding his incredible discoveries and even sends a priceless treasure to a colleague in the mail. These and other lapses in plausibility give the writing a feeling of carelessness that is devastating to a prophetic fiction book.
In spite of its weaknesses, this book does have several strong areas. I really enjoyed the author's back-story device of retelling parts of the biblical story of Daniel. These sections are effective without being overdone, and I only wish they could have been expanded and better connected with the present-day action. I was also very surprised by the skill with which co-author Greg Dinallo treats human tragedy. The emotion is real and does not seem concocted. One particuarly horrific scene actually brought tears to my eyes.
Overall, the book is weak with moments of strength. It is a formulaic adventure tale forced into an apocalyptic mold. The characters are mainly uninspiring; Murphy is likeable mainly because he is so unreal. The desperation of the publisher to sell enough copies of this book to justify their reportedly apocalyptic advance is evident in the rather unprofessional but commercially effective packaging; the dust jacket is designed like a soft-cover, complete with an author message from Dr. LaHaye on the back cover. If I had to guess, I'd say this book might do better in the long run than Jerry Jenkins's Soon, partly because Tim LaHaye is a more recognizable name and partly because the archaeological intrigue is more exciting than Jenkins's futuristic police state. Babylon Rising is enough of a departure from Left Behind that readers may put up with the problems of this book and future books in the series.
The author writes in his introduction, "I have tried to make this a gripping, page-turning novel, a great big adventure filled with important revelations." As an adventure story, this book is less than great but probably still better than average, and certainly interesting and even fun to read. But as a prophecy story, Babylon Rising lacks the revelations the author intended to include and falls far short of the standard that readers of this genre have come to expect.
Babylon Rising.......2006-11-26
"Babylon Rising" is a Christian adventure novel about a "biblical arhaeologist". Most of the characters are laughable stereotypes. They move from one implausible situation to the next, with a lot of slow, dull filler in between. And the subplot about a conspiracy against all evangelical Chrsitians is perhaps the most ridiculous story ever. I lost interest in the story after about one third of the book.
All of this is written in the style of a story from a cheap adventure magazine. Perhaps the author is trying desperately to appeal to a young audience (but fails) or he's just a talentless hack (and after having read the first two Left Behind novels, that seems very likely).
Don't waste your money or time on this one. It's badly written and dull, with a completely uninteresting story. As if that's not bad enough, it's also preachy.

This. Book. Sucks........2007-08-09
Errr, BTW, the above rating is about half a star too high. It was as low as I was allowed to go.
Flat characters, unimaginative plot, banal use of language, let me count the ways. I slogged through about 1/3 of it, by sheer force of hoping to get my dime back. No go, sadly. I finally gave up throwing good minutes after bad.
I have read this genre forever. I recently (oh, five books ago) gave up on the Anita Blake & Merry Gentry books. This makes those look like "War & Peace" crossed with Stephen King.
You know it's bad when you realize that you do not care if any or ALL of the characters die in the next chapter, the next page or the next paragraph. Let alone how the story ends.
Great Book!.......2007-07-05
I expected a little more...well a little more attitude, a little less self pity, and a lot more self control from the main heroine, Dawn. I was almost disappointed that she had any part of my name, but I see room for character development and a little more maturity. The book really kept me hopping, with good spins on old vampire ideas and legends. It's pretty obvious who "The Voice" really is or rather what he is. But still very readable. After reading the book, I immediately started hunting for the next in the series, but it wont be out til Feb of 2008. All in all, the book was well worth the price and a lot was packed into the larger format book.
Definitely worth reading........2007-06-28
Dawn Madison, a young stunt woman, is summoned to L.A. to find out what has happened to her father, Frank, who has disappeared. She is introduced to the Limpet Agency, whom her father worked for, and meets Kiko and Breisi, paranormal investigators. Dawn has issues concerning her mother, Eva, who was Hollywood royalty before she was murdered one month after Dawn was born. Dawn feels she will never compare to her beautiful mother. In the course of the hunt for her father, she finds out the Limpet Agency is investigating a sighting of a young Hollywood child star, Robby Pennybaker, who died at the age of 12. During the investigation for her father and the reason for the sighting of Robby, she is brought into the world of vampires and the Underground.
For the most part, the book was entertaining, but didn't entirely grab me from page to page. The ending is left open for a continuation of the story and many loose ends are left dangling. But all in all, a good effort and worth reading the next book to find out what happens.
Very good start.......2007-05-23
I'm not going to write a long review to this book as I am not a very good literary critic. All I really want to say is that the book kept me very interested the whole way through and this book ended in a way that most series books seem to not end these days. This one left a lot of unanswered questions. I was shocked at how much was unknown at the end. It makes me long for book two. I love to read book series and every other one I read does not make me want to read the next book nearly as much. None. Sure, I get excited about the next chapter but I am just ready for the next adventure, not answers. That is why I enjoyed this book and look forward to the sequel.

Product Description
BABYLON RISING introduced a terrific new hero for our time. Michael Murphy is a scholar of Biblical prophecy, but not the sedate and tweedy kind. Murphy is a field archaeologist who defied danger to fearlessly hunt down and authenticate ancient artifacts from Biblical times. His discovery sent him hurtling from a life of excavation and revelations to a confrontation with the forces of the greatest evil. Now, in the second novel in the series, Murphy is in pursuit of one of the most mysterious and sought-after of all Biblical artifacts: Noah's Ark. As he begins his death-defying quest to ascend Mt. Ararat, he will discover dramatic revelations to Biblical prophecies and be drawn even closer to the most terrifying evil about to be unleashed on all mankind.
Customer Reviews:
left behind wannabe falls flat.......2005-05-16
I was a big fan of Left Behind but not so much for the Babylon Rising series. For the audio narration, I find the narrator to be extremely (unintentionally) funny when trying to do women's voices, irish voices, etc. He should probably stick to just reading it...if they wanted dramatic voices they should have hired actors. The audio can get bogged down into a boring torturous mess when dealing with historical facts, lists, etc. I presume in the book these are just illustrations, but in the audio these things are drawn out into extremely long and boring diatribes. I also found the author's inept use of similes to be again, unintentionally funny...almost like Dan Rather's. Here's an example (from memory so the wording may not be exact): "the railing fell away like a stale week-old breadstick snapped in half". Ultimately the story is extremely hard to believe, no matter how hard you want to. And in the end, I could care less what happens to any of the characters, or what is coming next. And in my opinion, that is when a book has ultimately failed. In my opinion, it is obvious that it was Jenkins who made Left Behind great, not LaHaye.
