Brilliant for IT people wanting to get into CSS.......2007-05-12
If you are an IT person, or someone with an IT mindset, and you want to get into CSS, this book is for you. This is the best for you. This book does presume knowledge of markup (HTML/XHTML).
However, this book does not cover advanced layout, which was never really included in CSS (there is hope in CSS3). Discussions of layout will need to be found in other resources.
On the other hand, if you are an artsy person who likes to learn by doing, this book is not for you. It would be better if you searched for Eric Meyer on CSS, which takes you through implementing CSS on a project like basis. Eric Meyer on CSS does presume knowledge of markup (HTML/XHTML) however.
Good Choice for the CSS beginner and up.......2006-05-24
This book is a well written introduction into the world of css and pinpoints key concepts of css. It's by far one of the most readable texts that I have picked up out of all the technical books I've read in my few years of being alive. The book lacks a little in having some references to an example on a previous page while the reference to it is one to pages after the example. This discrepency is understood though since it is hard to keep everything together and not spill out onto other pages when planning the layout of a book. Overall this is a good book on css, and I would recommend it to anyone wishing to start into css.
Good book but irritating typos.......2006-05-04
I would have given this book atleast 4 stars if it weren't for the misleading typos! here's a few - Chapter 6 Pg 127 refers to Figure 6.2 (which doesn't exist!) instead of Figure 6.3; Chatper 10 Pg 228 the example "H1 {color: #ff000 }" is plain wrong (needs a extra zero at the end) and will not work.
Otherwise, it is a very good book. I especially like Chapter 4 - describes CSS selectors in great detail.
Great resouce for new to css.......2006-03-06
ritten by the authors of CSS, at first I found it a bit heavy in dialogue and backgrounds. Not until you open the book to the index does one actually realize the wealth of information in the book. Do not expect this book to show examples of the next great page, but as a resource in trouble shooting it helped explain alot of questions I either was too lazy to look up in Dreamweaver Help or couldnt find the right type of answer elsewhere. My level is pretty much entry intermediate, but with this book, it took me a bit higher. I am getting rid of my introductory CSS books and using this one as my main go to guide.
CSS is covered in detail (20 pages on CSS colour alone) and the explainations are straight forward. The most valuable chapter is "Spaces around boxes". Running over 30 pages, this is a well thumbed section that explained to me where I was going wrong with a layout CSS I was doggedly trying to force to do what I wanted. Once I went through this section, it became clear my folly.
This book now has an honour of being well coffee stained and front and center on my resource shelf.
Speaks with an authority as no other.......2005-11-19
I have gotten each edition of this book as it came out -- giving the still valuable previous edition to the most worthy co-worker. This book (whatever edition!) is rightly regarded as one that belongs by the desk of the astute and experienced Web worker.
When the first edition came out, I rejected it for another book on CSS. I figured that a book explaining CSS by the W3C alpha geeks who *created* the CSS recommendation would be too technical and unreadable. I learned how wrong I was. Lie and Bos's classic book turns out to be one of the most readable and clear treatments of CSS you can obtain.
I can agree that if you have a previous edition, there probably is no compelling reason to update. Some explanations have been elaborated and browser compatibility is updated for Firefox. The core value remains the same: simple enough for novices, detailed enough for experts.
Given the relation of the authors to the official work of the W3C, the book speaks with an authority as no other.

Book Description
In the fourth and final book of the Hidden Faces series, Annie Kingston and a new ally--Chelsea Adams from Eyes of Elisha--are drawn into a terrifying battle against time, greed, and a deadly opponent.
Customer Reviews:
Collins Has Saved The Best For Last.......2007-09-18
In Web of Lies, Collins brings her Hidden Faces and Chelsea Adams Series to a close. Annie Kingston witnesses a horrible murder, and is called on to draw the picture of the at-large killer. Meanwhile, Chelsea Adams has a vision of a girl being held captive. She feels God has called her to team up with Annie Kingston to find the girl before it is too late. As the two women work together, they soon discover a mysterious connection in the two cases that will lead them toward ultimate danger. Somehow these women must find a way to use their God-given talents to stop a mad man's deadly plans.
Not only does Collins raise the bar for other suspense authors, somehow she manages to make each installment better. Annie Kingston's first-person narrative effectively drives this series. Annie's struggles are real and we are able to relate with her as a parent and a Christian. As a single mom, Annie must juggle the demands of family with the intense responsibilities that come from working in law enforcement. On top of all of that, as a new Christian she faces an inward battle as she learns to rely on God completely. As Annie continually finds herself in the throes of danger, it is inspiring and encouraging to watch her faith increase.
Collin's writing is edgy, engaging, and absolutely thrilling. She knows how to take readers on a journey that will have them gripping their chairs and looking over their shoulders. This series is highly recommended for fans of suspense and mysteries, as well as those who love stories that challenge and inspire. (Originally reviewed as a series for Christian Library Journal)
Oh, what a tangled web she weaves.......2007-05-07
I've long been a fan of Brandilyn Collins' women's fiction, but I was left high and dry when she started writing suspense. I don't usually read scary novels, but I got "talked into" reading this one and I must admit it was good! Definitely a page-turner that kept me guessing till the end!
WEB OF LIES... A Real Page-turner!.......2007-02-26
The fourth, and concluding, book in Brandilyn Collins' "Hidden Faces" series--
WEB OF LIES--is yet another excellent effort by this extraordinarily talented mystery and suspense author. While apparently some overlook her works--as they do with those of Terri Blackstock, James Scott Bell, and others--simply because they include underlying testimony to a strong Christian faith--these page-turning novels match, and often surpass those written by best-selling secular authors. Try one or two and prove it to yourself...these are very special books!
--R. Howe (aka `Toby Martin, II) Erskine, MN.
My first taste.......2006-12-16
How could I have not ever read a book by Brandilyn Collins????? Her mix of crimes & Christianity totally enthralled me. My only complaint? This was the last book in what appears to be two different series. Ack! Of course I had to run out and get all the books I missed because I loved this one so much!
Web of Lies brings together forensic artist Annie Kingston and "visionary" Chelesa Adams, closing out two different series. The "Hidden Faces" series which revolves around Annie and the "Chelesa Adams" series. What an incredible idea! As a reader who devours every book written by an author I like the concept of wrapping up two series with one book is awesome. I tend to fall in love with all the books I read and I always wonder what would happen if characters from different series were able to interact.
Annie Kingston has witnessed a shooting in broad daylight. Several hours away God has show Chelsea Adams a horrible vision of a murder about to take place. Bring the two women together and what happens? Layer upon layer of faith and terror as the women race to uncover a murderer who wants to get personal with one of them.
What can I say. Web of Lies is a page turner! It's well paced, action packed and accurately portrays the challenges of faith I believe someone in that situation might have. Thank you Christian Fiction Blog Tour! I've found yet another new author. Barnes & Nobles also thanks you because I've dropped a few extra bucks there this week buying Ms. Collin's other books!
If you've read Christian fiction in the past and it left a bad taste in your mouth - check out this "Seatbelt Suspense". It'll totally change your mind!!
CAUGHT BETWEEN FEAR AND FAITH.......2006-06-28
Best-selling suspense novelist Brandilyn Collins continues her string of compelling faith fiction with Web of Lies, a harrowing forensic thriller that pinpoints the collision between fear and faith.
Annie Kingston, a forensic artist, teams up with Chelsea Adams, a woman who receives terrifying visions from God -- as the two find themselves trying to rescue two kidnapped people before they are murdered by a psychotic killer with a spider obsession. Web of Lies deals frankly with the struggles of a Christian in professional life -- especially when that professional life includes murderous lunatics, arrogant lawmen and irresponsible journalists.
Brandilyn Collins once again proves herself a master of the page-turner. Just make sure your doors are locked and you've said your prayers for the night -- because once you open to the first page, you are in for the ride of your life.

Web Style Guide: Basic Design Principles for Creating Web Sites, Second Edition
ASIN: 0201596253 |
Amazon.com
For readers looking for a one-stop read for all they need to know about cascading style sheets (CSS), Cascading Style Sheets, Second Edition: Designing for the Web really hits the nail on the head. One of the authors--Hakon Wium Lie--was the originator of CSS and is in charge of the technology among the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). His writing partner is Bert Bos--another key member of the W3C currently focusing on style sheets and the Extensible Markup Language (XML). Together, they deliver a truly educational guide to the subject.
This book wisely includes numerous color screen shots and diagrams, as well as many typographic examples, to augment the discussion of the inherently visual topic of CSS. The authors' graphical expertise comes through clearly with visuals that clarify topics without cluttering the presentation.
The coverage goes beyond--or shall we say behind--that found in many other CSS books that focus primarily on the technical features of browsers. For example, the authors take the time to discuss typesetting terminology and font families in order to build a well-rounded knowledge. Despite the presentation of the precise details of the CSS1 and CSS2 specifications, the text is quite easy to read and intriguing to follow. Even if you are familiar with CSS--this is an excellent title to own. --Stephen W. Plain
Topics covered: CSS (levels 1 and 2), HTML, and XML tutorials; plus coverage of which browsers support which CSS elements.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly oragnized, but not totally useless.......2002-08-29
There are some issues with this book that are purely the publisher's fault. (I am sure the authors are just as annoyed as I am.) Let's get them out of the way first.
Inside the back and front covers are what appears to be a handy quick reference. Great idea - except almost all the page numbers are wrong! That makes it completely useless. I have scratched in corrections in my copy, but I am not about to do a complete revision. The first edition had this same flaw, and I had hoped that the second would fix the problem.
The index is iffy. That's probably a clue right there to the wishy-washy structure of the book. It seems to be all over the place, with crucial bits of information about a topic filed away under some other topic, often in an example. As a reference work, it's very, very poor. It's written as if the reader is going to read it from start to finish and remember its entire contents. Yeah right.
Finally, the complete lack of real-world information about just how badly the various browsers support CSS is rather annoying. Sure, I understand that that stuff gets out of date quickly, but for designers who are targeting NS 4.7, it's useful to know what works and what doesn't.
Its sole saving grace (those two stars) is that is does in fact cover most of CSS - by hook or by crook. The examples, though contrived (and again, unrelated to the real world) do illustrate the concepts to a greater or lesser degree.
So so... Probably not for an absolute beginner.......2002-03-25
This book is so so. It's got me through some tight spots while designing. The down side is that it has no real structure to it. It is all over the place when looking for specific topics and doesn't seem to have any coherent order to it. The index could be better. There are also not a lot of good examples. If you are an absolute beginner, you should pass this one by and get O'reily's CSS Definitive Guide instead.
Buy this book if you are new to CSS........2001-09-21
That's what I did and I'm glad I did. This is not the only book you'll need but it is the one you must have. If you are new to CSS, you'll also be new to it's structure and syntax and this book explains this better than any others I've read. The classification of HTML elements into CSS element types (ie. block vs. inline) is hardly seen elsewhere.
I think the extensive discussion on fonts was interesting and required for understanding how to code CSS so the browsers will display what you want or as close as you can get. I also enjoyed the style and look of the book itself.
I wouldn't have a job without this book.......2000-12-09
This book is absolutely indispensable. I don't have any other CSS books and I knew nothing of CSS before I started, but now I know it like the back of my hand. It's not only a great book to learn CSS, but it's also invaluable as a reference tool once you progress. Not one of those books you read then end up only to have to buy a more in-depth book for reference once you have progressed. It's good for everyone, beginner or advanced. Absolutely worth every penny.
An excellent CSS tutorial and valuable reference........2000-11-30
Prior to purchasing this book, the only things I knew how to do were make links so that they weren't underlined and change the color of some text. The basic, commonplace implementations of Cascading Style Sheets. Well, after hearing more about this rising development in web deisgn, I took an interest in CSS and decided to buy this book. I was not disappointed. It covers every aspect of CSS in a simple yet thorough manner. The quick reference inside the covers is also extremely helpful when you need to find the right CSS tag.
In regard to previous reviewers who say most of this will not be supported in the near future or ever, my response is that yes, it is true true that many of CSS' features will never be fully developed and implemented but if you browse through the actual body of the book, you will find that the bulk of the material covered is either already supported by the major browsers or will be in their next release. Therefore, I feel that it will not be long before the vast majority of this book becomes incredibly useful.
I have borrowed the O'Reilly CSS book and it is also quite good but I feel that this book goes into better detail about each tag and parameter.
I wish I could give it 4 1/2 stars but the reason I have given this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the author is also the main developer of CSS. Him being so closely involved has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is obvious: this guy knows more about CSS than probably anyone in the world. But, due to the same fact, I would say he has a less neutral, more idealistic approach of CSS. That is why several features covered are a few browser versions ahead of their time, which has been the main argument of most people who didn't like this book.
All in all, this book does a superb job at covering every nook and crannie of CSS, from the widely supported to the underdeveloped. One day, technology will catch up to this book and it will be indespensible but until then, it is still the most useful guide to Cascading Style Sheets.

Book Description
My plan to start seriously learning Python begins with Practical Python...
— Richard Bejtlich, TaoSecurity
This book properly blends programming concepts with design concepts...and cements its lessons with entertaining examples.
— Craig Banker, Baton Rouge Linux User Group
Practical Python offers a highly useful guide to the Python programming language. In disarmingly readable prose, author Magnus Lie Hetland guides you through those concepts of most importance to the budding Python developer.
Following a succinct overview of the installation process, Hetland brings you up to speed regarding the general programming precepts common to every high-level language, including datatypes, conditionals and looping, abstractions, and modularity. Notably, Hetland takes great care to provide a thorough introduction to Python's potentially confusing datatype offering, including lists, tuples, and dictionaries, providing numerous examples aimed toward familiarizing you with their subtle, yet important differences.
Primed with the language's foundational knowledge, you'll then be introduced to Python's file-handling, database, GUI, and string-handling capabilities. Additionally, Hetland offers an excellent review of Python's object-oriented, functional, and exception-handling capabilities. All chapters are peppered with references to Python's useful built-in functions, which is done with the intention of demonstrating the considerable features offered by the default Python distribution.
Hetland devotes the second half of the book to project development, taking great care to choose a series of ten increasingly complex applications that are of timely and wide-ranging interest to burgeoning and expert developers alike. Project focus includes automated document conversion, newsgroup administration, graphical PDF document generation, remote document maintenance, the creation of a peer-to-peer system with XML-RPC, database integration, and GUI and game development.

Although Good..........2007-04-01
Look for this guy's online python tutorials: instant hacking (the title is a misnomer, instant hacking has nothing to do with "learning to hack") and instant python.
I rly liked those tutorials a lot and so I bought this book because it was by the same author.
However, I figured out (slightly to my dismay) that this was rly just an old version of "Beginning Python: From Novice to Professional (Beginning: From Novice to Professional)" by the same author.
Thus, I'd recommend the other new version but this book is really good too.
This book covers a wide variety of programming topics (as well as programming "concepts" such as inheritance, polymorphism, etc). Even though its old, I couldn't tell that it was an older version until I read other Amazon topics. This book also isn't short at all so its defintely gonna keep me busy for quite a while :)
A practical guide to the Python programming language.......2005-12-06
Magnus Lie Hetland's Practical Python provides developers with a practical guide to the Python programming language: while it does assume a degree of basic Python programming experience, it leads readers from the basics to the advanced concepts needed to understand datatypes, abstracts, and other concepts central to Python's datatype offerings. The program's object-oriented applications receive thorough coverage; but half the book covers project development and walks users through ten increasingly complex projects to demonstrate application choices at work.
I don't write reviews, usually.......2004-11-15
If you believe one learns more from others than from books and you are a beginner, this book is for you.
I always use Python in a hurry. Python pampered me into a lazy learner, but who's to blame? To me, Python is like a friend I am deeply attatched to but never know enough, until I found this book. Yes, even beginners can start USING Python in a week or two. But he/she also knows the difference between his/her programming skill and the professionals'. Well, Magnus will help you catch up with them in a few days' joyful reading. Like Code Complete this book teaches you things you can only learn from experience but it achieves this by using a pedagogical (and practical) programming language, ten illustrative and generalizable projects, and good writing. I can't help you learning Python, but recommanding this book is the least I can do.
Does humor belong in Python?.......2003-11-06
I am currently working on a project which involves a software tool for energy benchmarking. Up until now I have been using an interpreted language (which will go unmentioned, I don't want to start a flame war). Although this language is good for a lot of things, it was becoming increasingly difficult to use it for my project. I felt that the project was getting too big to maintain the code in a orderly way. For a while I have trying to port the whole shebang to C++, but it felt like trying to kill a mosquito with a cannon (like in that Monty Python sketch). My search on the wonderful worldwide web confirmed what I already knew, I should try to use Python for my project (read 'why Python' by Eric Raymond for instance). After dabbling around with tutorials and the like I thought it was time to buy a real book. I came across 'Practical Python' by Magnus Lie Hetland pretty soon and downloaded a sample chapter. After reading this I just knew this was the book for me. It's well written, it has good examples and is written with humour. Humour, I think at least, is important but very personal and Hetland manages to find a good balance between humour and 'serious' coding. The examples are clear and especially noteworthy are the projects which are in the last part of the book. This is practical! Once you mastered the language you can use your knowledge in real applications. The book reads like a Stephen King novel. Exciting, you want to know what's on the next page before you go to sleep (if you can sleep...).
Overall this book is a winner. I would like to recommend it to everyone who wants to learn Python and have a nice time reading it also. I know that I did!
Left wondering.......2003-11-04
I'm really starting to wonder about these whole Amazon review system. I mean, these reviews so far reflect nothing about what I've personally found this book to be. All of those things sound strikingly like advertisements as opposed to honest feedback. I doubt this Amazon thing is worth anything anymore, but whatever. This book was dry, drab and incomplete in many ways. It never delivered what it promised. I can't say I'm a beginner at Python, so perhaps that was the problem. But I'd stay away from this book and perhaps look at one of Oreillys titles.

Book Description
Femi is in trouble.
He's gotten involved with a gang of older boys and is telling so many lies to his family, he can hardly keep his head straight. His sister, Sade, knows something is going on, but she doesn't want to worry their father while he's waiting to hear if the family will be granted asylum in Britain. But with Femi growing more and more involved with the criminal gang, how long will any of them be safe?
In this sequel to Carnegie Medal winner The Other Side of Truth, acclaimed author Beverley Naidoo once again tells the story of Nigerian refugees Femi and Sade. With unflinching realism, she presents the dangers the siblings face -- not in Africa this time, but in a school very much like one of our own.

If you want to learn how to take greater control of your Web pages with cascading style, you can't go to a more authoritative source than Hakon Wium Lie and Bert Bos, the creators of this versatile tool. They show you step-by-step how to use cascading style sheets to create type displays in ways that were previously available only for traditional print--altering the color, boldness, font, and placement however you choose. The authors use simple examples for demonstrations and also include samples of gorgeous (and amusing) Web typography to show what's possible and to serve as a springboard for your own ideas. The authors present much that will be inspiring even to seasoned Web designers.
Book Description
Cascading Style Sheets (http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/Style/css) offer a powerful and manageable way for authors, artists and typographers to create visual effects that will launch aesthetics to the forefront of the Web. Written by the developers of Cascading Style Sheets,
Cascading Style Sheets: Designing for the Web covers: writing Web documents that display well on all screens; deciding when to use CSS and when to use other methods such as images, to create certain designs; moving from static paper to a dynamic screen; a correlating Web site houses selected chapters along with source code for the CSS examples.
Customer Reviews:
A great book to get started, but leaves one longing for more.......1999-06-11
I powered through this book in one evening, which says three things about it: it's enlightening, easy to comprehend, and short. The chapters are organized logically, and the content of each is succinct and well supported with examples. I did notice some typos such as "margin-below" instead of the correct "margin-bottom," which will serve to confuse the novice, but overall, I felt it was an excellent purchase-one I reference often. One of the most helpful sections appears in the back, taking sites designed using traditional HTML means and converting them to more efficient style-sheet-enhanced sites. However, as I attempted to put some of these suggestions to use, I found that they didn't work as the authors purported. But I found the thought process behind the conversions enlightening.
Overall, I think this book offers the beginner a great introduction and the expert a excellent reference.
This book teaches easily how to write cascading style sheets.......1999-05-24
This book is a good reference for me because I know alot of CSS. But, I have learned some from it. What it doesn't have that I wish it had was more on filters (DropShadow). Well, nice book.
It is a great book........1999-04-10
The book really is a wonderful book, I am a CSS designer, and it helps me a-lot with reference, and new terms etc.
It truly is a wonderful book written by the best people.
A definite compendium of all CSS elements, but...........1999-04-09
This will teach any webmaster how creating one CSS master sheet will make your whole site distinctive, but anybody who is on the learning track of HTML will be totally confused.
Not an introduction to CSS and/or web design.......1999-03-19
Well written, easy to understand IF you are somewhat familiar with html. If you're looking for an introduction to CSS and/or web design, this book might bore you.
I found the authors description of fonts and typefaces interesting.

Opera Web Browser For Dummies.......2000-08-03
This was a very informative and easy to follow book! Very helpful!!
A First Class Tour of a First Rate Browser.......2000-08-03
This is a browser for the rest of us. Opera is a fast browser with clean code, that outperforms Netscape and Windows Explorer in several areas. For beginners to power users, the author has gone deep inside the software to show us how to use the full power of the browser, and even documented some tricks you might not have thought possible. If you are serious about getting the most out of the Internet, give Opera a try, and take a comprehensive tour of it with this book.
Better than nothing.......2000-07-09
Biased because I abhor the word dummies in all their books, I really didn't want to buy this book. However for beginners there just isn't much available. Although the information is there, I don't think it is really organized to suit the learning pattern of someone who is really just learning, computers or the web.
