In Dinner With a Perfect Stranger, David Gregory relates the story of two men sharing a meal. The point of interest is knowing that one man believes he is Jesus. What will the other man think by the time the evening is through? The conversation begins, as one could imagine, scratching the dry hard surface of skepticism and doubt, but gently and persistently goes deeper and deeper, spiraling in from that starting point until they are eventually talking about the true stuff of life; the career drifting off-track, the marriage experiencing its own kind of strain, the life being lived where the philosophical questions of youth have given way to simply coping with modern day-to-day living.

Gregory's book is a refreshing reminder of what evangelical Christianity is at its very best -- a faith enlivened by the personal relationship between the Creator and the created. In the end, evangelical Christians are focused on who Jesus Christ is, and more specifically, who He is to them. Doctrinal stances, theological conundrums, questions about literal or non-literal Biblical interpretation, these are all beside the point for the certain type of Christian whose central focus is the life and person of Jesus.

In the Narnia series, C.S. Lewis touched on some of the core questions of religion, from the Christian viewpoint (is there a hell? What is heaven like, really? How can other religions be wrong, and just one be right?) Taking his cue from Lewis, Gregory does the same, realizing that questions like these come alive when they're in the context of a story, and we can be the third party, watching with interest while they are put on the table and considered. In the end, Gregory's book succeeds because of his willingness to approach interesting, hard questions like these. He is always, undoubtedly, aiming for the heart, but he realizes that to win the heart one must never forget that the mind has to come along for the ride. --Ed Dobeas

Book Description

You are Invited to a Dinner with Jesus of Nazareth

The mysterious envelope arrives on Nick Cominsky’s desk amid a stack of credit card applications and business-related junk mail. Although his seventy-hour workweek has already eaten into his limited family time, Nick can’t pass up the opportunity to see what kind of plot his colleagues have hatched.

The normally confident, cynical Nick soon finds himself thrown off-balance, drawn into an intriguing conversation with a baffling man who appears to be more than comfortable discussing everything from world religions to the existence of heaven and hell. And this man who calls himself Jesus also seems to know a disturbing amount about Nick’s personal life.

…………..

"You’re bored, Nick. You were made for more than this. You’re worried about God stealing your fun, but you’ve got it backwards.… There’s no adventure like being joined to the Creator of the universe." He leaned back off the table. "And your first mission would be to let him guide you out of the mess you’re in at work."
………….

As the evening progresses, their conversation touches on life, God, meaning, pain, faith, and doubt–and it seems that having Dinner with a Perfect Stranger may change Nick’s life forever.

5 out of 5 stars A Perfect Book.......2007-09-17

I received this book as a gift and enjoyed it so much that I bought it to give to my daughter-in-law. What would it be like to have dinner with Jesus? This book answers that question in a way that includes humor and an inside look at witnessing as Jesus might do it if he invited an unbeliever struggling with life's problems to dinner. A thought-provoking book beautifully written.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.........2007-09-07

An excellent book. Perfect for the whole family to listen to. It is funny at times and then brings the right amount of drama at the right time. It makes you think things through and to a higher level.

A quick read, I actually read it twice. I will keep it and lend it out, but I want it back. It's one for my permanent collection.

1 out of 5 stars Reads like a religious brochure.......2007-08-24

My mom gave me this book to read as, one would guess, a last minute ditch effort to get me back into religion. Flipping through the book and seeing that it was only around 100 pages, and was printed in nice big "kid's book" letters, I figured, hey, what's a couple hours? I'm certainly willing to hear other viewpoints, and weigh them accordingly.

My first complaint is that if this is how religious people think that non-religious people think, feel, and act, then they are sorely mistaken. It's as if everyone that isn't Christian is empty, sad, and just sort of generally depressed. I guess using logic and consistency in your life makes you depressed? I guess not accepting whim-based rules about how to live life because "this book said so" and instead working rigorously to come up with a consistent set of morals and values makes you feel empty?

Anyways, the author attempts to make logical proofs, and in doing so, shows that he has no clue what a logical proof is. His undeniable, irrefutable proof that god exists is that an earlier part of the bible predicts a later part of the bible. Seriously. Nevermind that the later part of the bible was written a couple centuries after the fact, and by monks who were fully aware of the prophecies in Daniel, etc.

He also makes the claim that either Buddhism, or Hinduism, (i forget which, and i don't have the book in front of me) can't be true because it says that the universe is eternal. "How does that stack up against what your scientists have recently discovered?" alluding to the idea that we now *think* that the universe had a starting point. Regardless of the fact that we don't KNOW that it had a starting point, using science to dethrone one religion after another but not applying it to your own is a methodology only useful to those completely wrapped up in their own beliefs. One wishes the guy having dinner with Jesus would have responded with "well... that's funny... what does our science say about the idea of consciousness without matter? Or simultaneously being all-knowing and all-powerful? Or energy without any means to measure it? I guess that means your dad doesn't exist... which in turn means you don't exist, because you're one with your dad or whatever... so I guess I'm talking to myself... which would explain why the waiter has been looking at me strangely all night."

There was also a fantastic bit at the end about how if Jesus was in this guy's heart, he (Jesus) could love the guy's wife when he (the guy) couldn't anymore. Or something to that effect. I'd talk more about that, but I don't want to misquote it and have someone negate the whole review based on it, so I'll let it go.

I could go on for pages about the rediculous assumptions this book makes about how life should be lived, and the causes of evil in the world, etc. But I won't. Suffice it to say that this book is patently ridiculous, and actually rather offensive to truly free-thinking, open and honest people.

Then again, the author believes in a god that said "Thou Shall Not Kill" and then went on to murder millions and millions of people, as well as an entire planet's worth of animals that are completely amoral. So I guess anything goes, and he's as capable as anyone else to cherry-pick the parts that he does and doesn't support out of the bible.

5 out of 5 stars Profoundly entertaining........2007-08-04

This little book is captivating. It answered many questions that often come up about who God is. It was so interesting I couldn't put it down. I found it profoundly entertaining and historically accurate.

Learning Italian for an upcoming trip....this school book is the key...it's easier to follow (as it's intended for High School)than other self help books....and is full of useful information...I would recommend the workbook to go with it...or just make copies of the pages to work with....Great book...it is helping me a lot.

3 out of 5 stars Not awful, but not perfect either.......2003-12-16

This is an alright text book. It does what it's meant to do. A person can learn Italian from this book as long as they are also in a class as well, but it definately has some flaws. One -it needs more examples of some of the more difficult grammar points. Two - the order is strange. Why did you start with avere? Somehow essere seems like a better place to start. And the chapter themes! They pretend that they have chapters arranged by topic, but it seems very haphazard to me. Also, several major grammatical topics are missing from this book, and as a result, many of my teachers have had to give us multiple hand outs to compensate. It's ok - but it could be a lot better.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource.......2003-01-14

I read this entire book across two college semesters before moving to Italy. After having spent $500 or so on Italian language books, this is one of the few that was worth the money. Even though I speak fluently, I still refer to this book frequently to resolve difficult tense questions or clarify grammar details. I highly recommend this book to any serious student.

3 out of 5 stars Wait for the next edition, or stick to the 4th!!.......2002-07-28

I took 3 semesters of Italian, with each semester covering 1/3 of the book, so I completed the entire book. This book is good if you follow it in a traditional classroom setting, especially since the proffessor pointed out all the mistakes in this book, which unfortunately, are quite numerous for a textbook. I have also checked out the 4th edition, which is much better than this one as it is better structured and contains useful charts,(which are now omitted) and is thoroughly proofread. The 6th edition just came out, so hopefully it is an improvement from the 5th.

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe all the praise this book is getting........2007-03-20

Well I don't know.. after reading the reviews myself, it's clear to me that a certain "type" of person buys this book- one that is largely interested in math.

I am not one of those people, and my review is unique because I am actually in the process of using this book for an introductory math course at the University of Texas at Austin. Let me tell you, I absolutely hate it. It is beyond frustrating- I find the explanations to be extremely vague and confusing, and often find myself looking up secondary sources just to try and figure out what in the world it's talking about. It's not just me, either- the average grade on the first exam was about 47/100, and we were given a HUGE curve. My teacher basically recites from the text verbatim, which is another indictment against this book. I literally cannot find the words to express how much I despise the Heart of Mathematics.

If you are someone who finds themselves in a math course that is using this book, my advice is to switch out IMMEDIATELY. Everyone else- hey, if you like math, this is up your alley, judging by the reviews.

3 out of 5 stars Good for a math book.......2007-03-11

It's filled with a lot of information and it seems the author was trying to make it more current... It's a math book, so it's really not all that interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-10

I needed this text book for my first day of class so I used the expidited shipping and I received it the day before my first class. Very good service. Book was in better condition that I had expected. Thank you for helping me save so much money on my school books.

5 out of 5 stars Math Appreciation, not computation or rigor.......2004-09-23

_The_Heart_Of_Mathematics_ was never intended as a traditional textbook to teach you how to calculate. If that is what you are looking for, you need a diferent book. Its value -- and this is the best book of its kind that I have found -- is in helping the reader gain an appreciation for mathematics. Its title could well have been _Math_Appreciation_ . It was most likely intended as a way of satisfying the "math requirement" for non-math majors who feel allergic to math.

I have read comments from several people debating the merits of this book. Perhaps it would help to use inject an analogy into the conversation. Suppose you wanted to learn (or teach) music. One teacher chooses to teach her students how to play the piano;
another has her students listen to CDs of great performances; another teaches his students how to read music; and another teaches the biographies of Beethoven and Mozart. Which of these teachers is right? Which kind of music do you want to learn?

The question itself is mistaken, if you think that it has exactly one correct answer. The best answer is: ALL OF THEM. The problem here is not in what one of these approaches will teach, but in what it omits.

Now, translating back from the metaphor: I want my children to learn how to compute AND how to love math. Which is right? Both of them.

This book shows you how to have fun with math. If you or your students end up learning something, and wanting to learn more -- that's the idea.

5 out of 5 stars Learning To Think Mathematically.......2004-09-03

This is an excellent textbook in that its primary emphasis is on some of the great ideas in mathematics and effective thinking. Topics covered are numbers, infinity, geometry, topology, chaos and fractals, uncertainty, and decision making. The text is replete with myriad illustrations which assist the student in grasping key ideas. Text would be excellent for a liberal arts math course, an enrichment course for middle school and high school teachers, or as a course for advanced high school students. Comes with 3D glasses and exploration CD.
In summary, conveys the beauty of mathematics while teaching students to think.

One night, after an unsatisfying evening at a party, author Oriah Mountain Dreamer wrote the start of The Invitation. By the light of her streetlight, she began, "It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.... I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain...."

Her profound invitation (longer than is written here) became the framework for this wise and inspiring book. Chapter by chapter, the author uses passages from her "Invitation" to welcome readers into a life that is more soul fulfilling and passionate, and has far greater truth and integrity. In a sense, she invites readers to get a life instead of buying into a lifestyle. Each chapter ends with a guided meditation specific to the theme of the chapter, such as "The Joy" and "The Failure."

Despite her suspiciously New Age-sounding name, Oriah Mountain Dreamer is a highly grounded, practical, and honest writer. This fresh and beautifully packaged book is destined for great acclaim in the realm of spiritual inspiration. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Visionary author Oriah Mountain Dreamer brings to life the wisdom of her beloved Ȯvitation, which has touched hearts everywhere with its fresh and spirited call to live life more deeply, honestly, and well.

Like the inspirations for Robert Fulghum's All I Really Need to Know I learned in Kindergarten, Cherie Carter–Scott's If Life Is a Game, These are the Rules, and Margaret Fishback Power's Footprints, the poem that sparked The Invitation has been embraced around the world, passed along by thousands who have discovered and treasured its message. In this lovely gift book the author speaks from the heart, reflecting on everything from desire to betrayal and offering practical – and often surprising – suggestions for how to live the ecstasy of everyday life, learn to recognise true beauty in ourselves and the world around us, and how to find the sustenance that our spirit longs for.

The poem Invitation has been recited and quoted at countless spiritual conferences, and on network radio by Robert Bly, Jack Kornfield, Angeles Arrien, and many other spiritual leaders.

From the Invitation:

ȴ doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive ...'

5 out of 5 stars A life changer.......2007-03-18

My daughter introduced me to this book - her boyfriend had given it to her. I can't help but think that if more people passed it on like this that it would have a very positive effect in the world. Simplistic, maybe, but the book it full of optimistic ideas and thought provoking meditations that could make a big difference one person at a time.

2 out of 5 stars Poor and Confusing.......2007-01-02

I bought this book for a friend based on the write up and the poem. Since he is away, I read through it and I am so glad I did. I am certainly not giving this as a gift, and I am glad to see that I am not the only who didn't like this book. Basically, I couldn't figure out her point. What is she talking about?

I felt mildly depressed after reading it, and found it to be confusing--it seemed just like a string of anecdotes without any substance.

I'm not sure that this is an invitation to, but sorry, Oriah, I don't accept.

5 out of 5 stars The best Gift Ever..........2006-07-07

I received this book as a gift for my birthday from a friend of mine, and had no clue what to expect when I read it. I sat down and read through it in one sitting and couldn't put it down. I then read it aloud to my boyfriend and my daughter and my son... and I sent excerpts of it to several of my online friends telling them they needed to buy this book. It's touching and emotional - but so powerful and beautifully written. I could not recommend this book enough - it's simply the best gift I've ever been given.

5 out of 5 stars A most remarkable book.......2006-06-29

The Invitation helped me understand how I can enhance my own life when I embrace all of life -- as it is -- not as I want it to be. I have sent copies to my friends, children and grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully thought provoking!.......2006-05-22

This poem has resonated with me for several years now. I appreciated Mountain Dreamer's honest explanation into what inspired this powerful poem. It is not often that we get such insight into what situations inspire such works of art.

This book was very thought provoking for me, and is valuable in it's ability to encourage self examination and living more truthfully. One of the most engaging and inspirational books I've read.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A superbly organized and presented textbook.......2003-07-26

Now in an updated and expanded third edition, Invitation To Oceanography by oceanographer Paul R. Pinet is a superbly organized and presented textbook for advanced students of this fascinating and specialized field of science. An optional student study guide enhances the primary text, which stands well on its own with full-color illustrations, and a wide survey of topics from marine sedimentation to biological productivity in the ocean, coastal habitats, ocean circulation and much more. With laboratory exercises designed by Karl Chauffe and Mark Jefferies which make use of safe, inexpensive, reusable, and readily available materials, Invitation To Oceanography is a very confidently recommended addition to academic reading lists, as well as an excellent curriculum resource for "student friendly" classroom instruction.

3 out of 5 stars Weirdest textbook I ever used.......2003-06-20

Although Mr. Pinet can explain things very clearly, some of his writing is very strange, especially for a college textbook. At one point, he refers to animals as "critters." At another point, he recommends an experiment of taking your bathtub outside and putting by your pool when the wind is blowing. This book is full of weird little things like that.

4 out of 5 stars Just what I wanted!.......2000-06-15

Although a college textbook designed for non-majors, "Invitation to Oceanography" contains much information for those interested in the subject. What I especially liked and appreciated the most were the application tasks. These are mathematical problems/questions one can use and apply to the ocean on their next trip to the beach. Moreover, the Internet links provided in the book add a great supplement. Educators at the secondary (high school or college) level will enjoy teaching from this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great Applications Towards Oceanography.......2000-05-28

"Invitation to Oceanography" provides a wealth of information as a non-fiction text. For those interested in the complexities of the inner-workings of oceanic events and marine biology, this is the book to read. The book is a fascinating read delving into facts and figures of oceanic characteristics and definitions. Teachers and/or those interested in marine science will find the book intriguing with its application towards the field of mathematics, marine science, and chemistry. It will forever change how you perceive the ocean on your next beach vacation.

3 out of 5 stars Good Book But Too Expensive and What the Heck is a Bind-In Card???.......2007-08-21

The book is interesting and thorough...but it costs way too much. Also, what is a bind-in card? I asked three sellers and even THEY didn't know what that meant. Fortunately the book is usually used for two semesters of Italian, i.e. Italian 101 and 102.

3 out of 5 stars It didn't have everything.......2005-10-03

This book all though it had the bind in card from the publisher did not have the book key for quia.com which was what my professor uses. I bought online because I thought I was getting everything for less but it ended up being the same amount as if I had bought it in the school bookstore because I also had to purchase the quia key. So the moral of the story is that if you need quia just buy it at the bookstore and then you won't have to wait for your book.

For this new edition, the authors and editors of Puntos have turned to those very instructors to help formulate a plan that would respond to the needs of a changing discipline. At the same time, instructor and student feedback have guided the development of the seventh edition in ways that enrich this foundation even more, and also bring to the materials a number of other important and exciting changes.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars okay book.......2007-10-05

The internet portion of this book lacks detail of how to follow for self
testing.

3 out of 5 stars puntos de partida.......2007-09-21

the book is alright. I mean its not amazing. its plus side is that it comes with a website that will read you certain things and the answers to all the sections are in the back so you can check your work, but the truly big help comes from haveing a good profesor/a BUT the quia lab and workbook that are an extra 30(+) dollars EACH are the real key to learning this material....as if the book isnt expensive enough already.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-09-16

I received the product quickly and it was just as described, in perfect condition. Thank you!

3 out of 5 stars Required Textbook.......2007-04-11

I would like to see a spanish book with more explanation between english and spanish. Most books rely on pictures for translation and this book follows the same model. I guess it will serve the purpose, however.

4 out of 5 stars Online Learning Center for Everyone--It's About Time!.......2007-02-19

I've owned this book and the 6th edition; the only difference there was modernizing photos and translations.
I found the book very useful, but I would like to see more transitions as one subject in a chapter changes to the next subject. If you have an instructor who transitions well, you won't have any problems. Going it alone, however, leaves you spending unnecessary time figuring out how to get from A to B. Still, especially if you have the workbook--you NEED the workbook no matter what--you'll learn well.
I'm thrilled to finally be able to get full access to a website with a used book--it's my favorite part of the whole thing!

    Book Description

AN INVITATION TO HEALTH, Twelfth Edition has been a best-selling personal health text for many years, largely due to its ability both to introduce the topics of health and wellness and also to inspire students to put the facts of what makes good health and wellness into practice. The unique approach of Dianne Hales's text revolves around the student focus (i.e. examples students can relate to, contemporary coverage, visual appeal, testing preparation). This text is comprehensive in its coverage and includes the latest research and data on topics students care about, from personal relationships, to eating habits and understanding health risks. Because changing for life is a major theme of this edition, a new "Your Life Coach" section presents practical information on how to make healthful changes. To enhance the critical thinking aspect, case studies have been added in each chapter that will present a personal issue involving making a healthy choice. Also, "You Decide" boxes in each chapter ask a controversial question for student reflection, such as same-sex marriage and legalization of marijuana. They are also linked to Personal Response System "clicker" content and a new online journal. Additionally, with this updated Twelfth Edition, there is the new HealthNow™ Online assessment and learning tool, including pre- and post-tests, a personalized behavior change plan, and activities to add enjoyment to learning and allow students to explore, experience, and better understand the benefits of healthy living. We also now offer Pedometers, over 500 PowerPoint® slides, new ABC® video clips, and much more. The Twelfth Edition continues to offer the same great content, features, and support materials, and now is taking it even further by emphasizing the importance of behavior change and developing life skills.
