I absolutely love everything Karen K writes. They are such good clean moral books and that is something that is very hard to find now days. Everyone thinks there should be lots of premarital sex in books today. I really appreciate your writing.

Karen's best series.......2007-01-10
The Redemption Series followed by the Firstborn series are the best of Karen Kingsbury. Each book leaves you wanting to read the next. It is hard to review just one book in this series. If you haven't read the Redemption series, start at book one and go through from the beginning, then on tho the Firstborn series.
Great!.......2006-11-28
I buy all of Karen's books. I liked Found and the other Firstborn books. I loved the Baxter family, and it's nice to see them in this series also. Karen is one of my favorite authors! I can't wait to read the next one!

Brainy and Fun.......2007-05-04
A real hit with our six year old. The illustrations are wonderful and the educational aspect is not totally obvious. A very entertaining book that's he took to share with his class at school.
Meatball the Pirate.......2007-04-06
Once upon a time many years ago I watched my daughter Emma play with her cousin Brian, whom Emma lovingly referred to as Meatball, and I wondered how long it would take before he began to cry. At eight years old Meatball looked like a smaller version of Rhett Butler, he talked with a squeaky voice that was struggling to mature, and his blondish hair oddly matched the color of his skin. Every game between the two kids eventually turned sour--a bump of the head, a twisted arm or even harsh words would send the boy reeling into the kitchen looking for comfort. While I admired his theatrics, I did not acknowledge them. Emma, on the other hand, like to pretend he was her plaything, a doll she collected. Take, for example, the afternoon she dressed him up like a pirate and sent him out into the yard with a steak knife searching for the neighborhood tabby cat. Florence, the woman that lived across the street and spent most of her days with her nose between the blinds of her front window, knocked on my door and demanded that I do something. I invited her in for coffee but she ranted and raved, cluck-clucking about manners and responsibilities and child-rearing, none of which I particularly cared to hear about. Meatball ran inside and tugged at Florence's blue polyester pants. "Don't worry," he said. "I buried the knife in the backyard." Florence grabbed his wrist and told him that he needed to dig it back up. He sighed heavily, stared at the ground and then began to cry. I pulled the cigarettes from the pocket of my robe, lit it, and waved him inside.
Charlotte, Meatball's mother, picked him up every day at 5 o'clock. She sat on the couch with Meatball on her lap and listened as he recounted his day. She disregarded any of Emma's attempts to defend herself when Meatball claimed she had harmed him. But who would believe an eight-year-old boy that said his cousin had instructed him to hunt for prey and bring back souvenirs?
Spaghetti and Meatballs For All.......2007-02-20
Cute way of having students know how they use math in their everyday lives. Great explanation of the mathmatical idea behind the book.
Pima Community College- Student Review.......2005-03-11
I read this book to my sister's kids (ages 4-8) and they all really enjoyed it. They had a lot of fun with the story (and didn't even know they were learning). This book is great for kids.
Area, perimeter, and multiplication for all!.......2004-11-16
I am a student at the University of Arizona South, majoring in elementary education. I recently read this book to a class of 3rd grade students. The children anjoyed watching as the guests arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Comfort and re-arranged the tables and chairs each time someone else showed up. They also enjoyed the fact that only Mr. and Mrs. Comfort's names were given and everyone else was referred to by their relation to the hosts, "Mrs. Comfort's brother's daughter's twin sons". The children loved the chaos as more and more people arrived and fewer and fewer place settings were left available, while "extra" chairs piled up in the periphery. Every student was engaged in the book because each and every one of them knew what Mrs. Comfort knew, that without a seating arrangement of eight seperate tables each seating four people, there would not be enough room for everyone to sit down. And by the end of the book, they found out they were right! The extensions available at the end of the story increase the possible learning to be attained, illustrating how to actively engage the children in hands-on activities to learn about area, perimeter, multiplication and division. Children can find out how many seats are available for each table formation in the book. They can also determine how many meatballs everyone can eat. This is a lively and interesting tale that evolves into spirited and animated discussions involving mathematical concepts. The children had a wonderful time listening to the story, then engaging and actively participating with their eight squares and 32 paper clips (tables and chairs) as we went through the story page by page with them arranging and re-arranging the seating. It was fantastic to see them so happily involved with LEARNING MATH!

A world they never imagined........2007-09-07
Todd Mitchell's THE TRAITOR KING tells of Darren and Jackie, who have always known their family was strange - but not by how much. A fantasy mystery revolves around the family and once they discover some of the secrets, a vanished uncle's plight draws them into a world they never imagined.
Fantastic Book -best thing I've read in a long time.......2007-08-31
To be honest, I picked up this book because I liked the cover. When I read it, I was expecting a fun read. And the book is fun --great characters, adventure, mystery and imagination. But what surprised me is how much I kept thinking about the book afterwards. There's far more going on beneath the surface of this book than one might expect of YA fantasy. Some heavy issues are dealt with in a new way. I've since spoken with ten year olds who love this book, teachers who discuss it in their classes, and family therapists who have their clients read it. All I can say is check it out --I haven't read a book this good in a long time. And I envy you for getting to experience The Traitor King for the first time.
Excellent fantasy book (and I usually hate fantasy).......2007-08-02
I absolutely loved this book. Everybody I know who has read it says they finished it in one night, and I did the same. Mitchell immediately drew me into his story with his quirky, dynamic characters and his page-turning plot. Darren and Jackie are completely intriguing, and while their adventure ventures into fantasy, their struggles are grounded in reality. Mitchell does a fine job of portraying complicated family dynamics - highlighting the ways in which we all struggle against our heritage and they ways in which we also long to embrace it. Anybody who has ever wondered about the mysteries of their family or their past will love this story.
A compelling mystery and fascinating family dynamics.......2007-06-05
Eleven-year-old Darren Mananann is pretty sure he knows exactly what to expect for his two-week summer vacation at Uncle Will's run-down house in Maine. There will be lots of card games and cocktails for the adults, and no TV or Internet for the kids. Plus he'll have his annoying cousin, Kini, to deal with.
At least his eccentric uncle will have set up this year's scavenger hunt, a truly challenging annual event that usually keeps Darren and his older sister Jackie occupied for several days. Darren is especially anticipating the hunt, hoping it will keep his mind off of the disturbing dreams he's been having.
But when Darren, Jackie, their parents and other relatives arrive at Uncle Will's dilapidated home, Will is not even there. All they have is a note that reads "Stepped out for a bit...some things came up" and advice about watering the plants and returning books to the library. Darren's mother is convinced that Uncle Will has finally lost his mind, seizing the opportunity to do some long-overdue housecleaning.
Soon, though, Darren and Jackie are convinced that Uncle Will still wants them to carry on with the annual scavenger hunt --- and that his cryptic note is actually the first clue. Sure enough, the siblings are soon involved in the most exciting hunt of all, one that will lead them deep into their family history and even bring them into close contact with the scary figures from Darren's nightmares.
As they follow Uncle Will's clues, Darren and Jackie begin to suspect that their unusual family might be even more extraordinary than they had imagined. They all seem to have second sight, or "shadow sight," a very useful thing for playing poker, as it turns out. Do Darren and Jackie also have the shadow sight? Why is their family name in the big book of Celtic mythology at the library? Is the librarian more than what she seems? Why has Uncle Will's research into the family story been burned? And who is the skeletal man who shadows their every move? Seeking the answers to these questions leads the siblings far into Celtic mythology, all the way to the mythical land of Tir Na N'Og.
THE TRAITOR KING is Todd Mitchell's first novel, and it clearly owes a great debt to some classics of children's literature, including Elizabeth's Enright's SPIDERWEB FOR TWO and Susan Cooper's OVER SEA, UNDER STONE. But that's not to say that Mitchell's book is derivative --- it integrates Celtic mythology well and also includes plenty of original plot ideas. The most appealing parts of the novel are in its first half, as Darren and Jackie work to navigate their uncle's clues and their new knowledge about the Mananann family. These sections include realistic, concrete imagery as well as a compelling mystery and fascinating family dynamics.
The portions of the book set in Tir Na N'Og are less robust and vivid, at least until the final confrontation that pits Darren against supernatural elements and even against the decisions of some of his own family. Mitchell leaves the ending wide open for a sequel in what he's calling The Broken World series. Readers will be eager to see how Mitchell continues to develop his mythology, and his most unusual family, in future installments.

"Dining together allows us to better understand who we are, regardless of our social status," writes Art Smith, author of Back to the Table, a cookbook that explores the meaning of the dining ritual while providing 150 recipes to "strengthen bonds between loved ones." Personal chef to Oprah Winfrey and a contributing editor to her magazine, O, Smith grew up in the Southern cooking tradition, the underpinning of this enticing home-style collection. Smith's reiterated message--that we return to the "sanctity of the table"--is unassailable; his recipes, however, really make the point. Readers looking for good food to cook and share will find the book a much-turned-to treasure.
Chapters like "Breaking Bread," "The Family Meal," and "Food Is Love" organize recipes around the communal eating theme. "The Family Meal," for example, includes exemplary everyday formulas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, such as Zucchini and Tomato Frittata, Carrot-Ginger Soup with Minted Yogurt, and Grilled Fish Fillets with Watercress Mustard and Tarragon. Other outstanding recipes--such as Mushroom, Provolone, and Rosemary Pizza, Sunday Dinner Pot Roast, and Spring Vegetable Lasagna--reflect and encourage shared cooking and enjoyment. Formulas for sweets are woven throughout the book and include such delights as Kumquat-Ginger Pound Cake, Chocolate Pecan Pie, and an old-fashioned Peanut Brittle. Illustrated with photos that depict the food and cooking processes or show people enjoying meals together, the book reminds readers of the culinary and spiritual pleasures of the shared table. --Arthur Boehm

LOVE IT!!!.......2006-04-04
This cookbok is very well put together. Not only are the recipes fabulous (try the mixed berry muffins), but the photography and poetry are inspirational and just plain lovely. This book is well worth having in your collection.
I love it!.......2006-03-15
I find myself reaching for this book again and again. Many of the recipes in it have become my new favorites! I don't know what I did without it. It is a welcomed addition to my cookbook collection.
Warm and Wonderful.......2005-09-12
Though my family and I do not often buy cookbooks, we agreed that this one was a "keeper." Some interesting recipes that are "doable," and good text.
great cookbook for people who want to cook.......2004-05-19
This is a great cookbook. I am not sure why people say the recipes are time consuming. They aren't. Yes- you need to know how to cook, follow instructions and have a pantry that doesn't have pre-processed boxed food. For the main courses, Art's showing you recipes that are made with real food and require about 30 minutes of prep time (most of them) and then time to cook. Everything that I've made is delicious. The vegetable lasagna, the scalloped potatoes and dinner rolls are wonderful. Anytime that you make a new recipe it takes a little longer than expected. If you make it again, it usually goes faster. I love this cookbook and it is one that I always look at to find a new recipe. I love it so much that this and Barefoot Contessa are the only cookbooks that I am bringing it on a two month relocation to TX. Buy this cookbook for the great recipes.
Why all the bad reviews?.......2004-04-08
I'm really quite surprised by the number of reviews slamming this book for having time consuming recipes. It is a shame this has gotten in the way of people enjoying some really great recipes. One reviewer even stated that "not everyone has a Kitchenaid mixer or a cast iron skillet." OK, I'll give you the mixer, but a skillet? Come on, any seasoned cook should have one and if the don't, they cost a mere $12-$15 and will last for several generations. I use my grandmother's. It is a must when cooking Southern food.
Let's face some facts, here: The recipes in this book are, or are largely influenced by, classic Southern cuisine. First, this isn't 30-Minute Meals. This is not to say all of the recipes take a long time, because many of them are great for a weeknight. But some are meant for Sunday dinners (the most wonderful of family traditions) and special occassions when one has time to devote to lingering in the kitchen. Back to the Table is about slowing down and enjoying your time at the table with your family. It's about tradition. What it is not about is running around like a chicken with its head cut off and trying to get dinner on the table in 30 minutes flat.
Don't get me wrong... Quick cooking is important these days. But if all of our cooking is done in a hurry, even on weekends, we are missing the true rewards of cooking. I recommend that we all slow down, at least once a week, and take time to really be a part of the kitchen.

Book Description
All families have secrets. Some secrets are healthy. But others--those John Bradshaw calls "dark secrets"--limit the wholeness and freedom of every member of the family, often generation after generation.
John Bradshaw's compelling new book takes us into the heart of the family's mysterious power to impact our lives. It ex-plores how secrets are created, how they influence us (even if we don't know they exist), and the risks we take in exploring them.
At the core of Family Secrets is a step-by-step guide to uncovering the secrets of the past and present, using a tool called the genogram to chart key relationships. Through many fascinating examples, this unique book shows how to recognize crucial gaps and silences, reconstruct missing information, and decipher partial memories.
It also offers readers vital advice on how to deal with the truths revealed, plus ways to stay safely and honestly connected with our families.
John Bradshaw's six-part PBS television series, "Family Secrets," first aired in summer 1995, and will remain in syndication in the United States and Canada through 1997. A second new series, "John Bradshaw on Eating Disorders," is also in circulation.
Customer Reviews:
Insghtful and powerful.......2006-07-16
Family Secrets provides powerful tools for understanding the dynamics of families, and understanding how you may have become unknowingly enmeshed in patterns that can persist for generations.
The most valuable parts of the book are the techniques for uncovering family secrets, and the method for bringing all the information together in such a way that it makes sense. These techniques are practical and really work. I made several major discoveries about families I am involved with as a result of this book.
Bradshaw includes many new insights about how families work throughout the book.
Overall, highly recommended.
This book can change your life, your family and your death.......2003-08-20
I first read this book when the subtitle was "What you don't know can hurt you." Bradshaw and others have finally done research to prove his thesis that generations repeat patterns, events, behaviors--not just personality types and genetic diseases. Reluctantly I had to agree because my observations, although unscientific, confirm what he explains.
Understanding Bradshaw's book altered my life and the abbreviated life of my brother, as indicated in the book "Gossip Kills (The 9th/8th? Commandment). The story therein is a case study of what Bradshaw posits in Family Secrets. A "must read" for anyone who understands or suspects that we're only as sick as our secrets.
Outstanding work again by John Bradshaw.......2001-08-27
This is one of the best works that I have ever read. Honest, with clear direction on what steps to take to improve the state of your life. Highly recommend!

True Family Pride.......2004-06-14
A really really great book. A true page turner. Written in Mrs. Jackson's usual style that is uniquely her own. I strongly suggest you pick up a copy and after pick up "The Savvy Sistahs". (the sequel that tells Brandy's story)
After You Read This Read The Savvy Sistahs.......2004-04-20
I read this some years ago but I just finished the Savvy Sistahs by Brenda Jackson. This author does a great job at bringing back this family without confusing you but leaving you wanting more. You will be in for a treat if you read this book first to learn the hilarious history of the Bennett family. This book was fuuny as well as scandalous.

Inspired by these festivals, The Black Family Reunion Cookbook contains more than 250 recipes from home kitchens across America, seasoned with warm memories and "homemade love."
Including personal reminiscences from celebrities such as Natalie Cole, Wilma Rudolph, Patti LaBelle, and Spetman College President Johnetta Cole, this unique collection reflects the local, national, and international heritage of the Black community. It offers dishes for every occasion and every taste, from African-inspired Mustard Greens with Peanut Sauce to down-home Family Famous Chicken and Dumplings, from a traditional gumbo to sophisticated Sweet Potato Smoked Turkey Bisque, and, in honor of the council's founder, Mary McLeod Bethune, her own recipe for her celebrated Sweet Potato Pie.

Not Soul Food, Not Real Food........2006-07-08
What a disappointment!
I was expecting real food and soul food, and what I got was a book of recipes that women generally inflict on each other at pot-luck affairs.
In the history of the World no real food has ever been cooked or served for a pot-luck meal. What happens is the woman has to contribute something so she looks thru her cupboard for stuff no one in her family will eat. Like canned lima beans and pickled beets and anchovies. So she tosses everything into one pot, boils it, pours the goo into a casserole, and takes it to the pot-luck. The book oughta be called Pot Luck Recipes to Inflict On Your Work Associates.
my favorite cookbook!!!!.......2006-01-24
This is the best cookbook!!! I bought it for my mom and then ended up borrowing it so much I had to buy my own! The recipes are incredible!! I have not found a bad one yet. Mac & Cheese is amazing!!
I love it, I love it, I love it.......2005-07-06
The Black Family Reunion Cookbook came just in time for my own family reunion this past weekend - July 4, 2005. It's an excellent choice for newcomers or oldheads like myself. It takes you back to the good days when your mother was in the kitchen whipping up a delicious peach cobbler or some tasty macaroni and cheese. I just loved this! Every single recipe took me back to my youth. It was funny running across dishes that I had forgotten about. Whether you're African American or Hispanic, you will love this cookbook!! Highly recommended to the world of book lovers

Yummy recipes.......2005-03-14
I have had this book for over 10 years, and I'm white. I bought this book when I was dating a black (african american) guy and wanted to cook him the foods that he liked. I still refer to it from time to time, but the best recipe is the macaroni and cheese. I get so many compliments when I make it for family dinners and potlucks, and everyone asks me for the recipe.
Excellent low-cost recipes that don't take forever!!.......2003-04-22
I've owned this book for over five years, and it is best cookbook I own. Recipes are well-tested, don't cost very much to make, use readily available ingredients, and many are simple enough to make for weeknight suppers. I recommend the chicken gumbo, the Carter Hill barbeque ribs, the eggplant casserole, the yam pork chop skillet, the Jamaican bannana cake, and the honey crunch pecan pie. I recommend this cookbook as a gift for college students because the recipes are easy and delicious.

Family reunions are not, for many of us, as basic a part of family research as they might be, and books on the subject usually reflect that. If most of your relatives still live within a day's drive, you probably see them regularly and an annual picnic is almost a routine event, dedicated to introducing new offspring and remembering the recently deceased. If your family is scattered all over the country, as is true of probably a majority of the American population these days, a reunion becomes a special event with a significant outlay in time and money for both planners and attendees, but the activities are still largely the same. But Sandy Clunies, a Certified Genealogist and frequent speaker at the national level, is a very experienced family researcher and past winner of the NGS Family History Writing Contest, so her interest here is primarily in the role of genealogy at the family reunion. How could any attentive researcher pass up the chance to graze among all those memories and experiences brought together for a few days in one place?
Putting on a reunion can be an overwhelming task, but (to quote the author's grandmother) you can eat an elephant if you cut it into bite-sized pieces. "What kind of show should it be?" she asks. Do you need a theme? Is there to be a central event, like a milestone anniversary or the dedication of a DAR grave marker? Will it be potluck at a state park? A gathering at the ancestral family farm? Or a Caribbean cruise? The most important rule, though is Plan Ahead. At least a year - preferably two if it's to be a big event. The second rule is Take a Businesslike Approach. This includes record keeping, not only to properly account for finances but to provide information for future reunions. (Detailed attendance records from family gatherings held a century ago have become valuable resources in their own right.) The Internet, naturally, is a great help in locating those whom you want to invite, especially if you've been out of touch for a few years, and the author gives detailed advice (plus encouraging anecdotes) on the use of search engines and message boards for this purpose. You will also want to advertise your reunion online in order to alert those individuals you weren't able to locate. Many suggestions of an historical and genealogical nature are provided for activities (house and cemetery tours, living history demonstrations), and for showcasing the family's history (enlargements of photos collected in advance, displays of inherited artifacts). And, of course, a series of oral history sessions is an opportunity not to be missed, with memories triggered by old photos and conversations with other descendants. To preserve all you've been able to learn, a post-reunion book (with sales solicited during the event) will not only provide a permanent record, it will help establish a tradition of future reunions and encourage wider attendance. A family website can present new information acquired, woven into what was already known, and can also encourage further research -- and advance planning for the next get-together. Even though I'm not a big reunion-attender, this is by far the best book I've seen on the subject.

This book will be your "right-hand" and will guide you the through the process step-by-step. "A Family Affair" will not let you down. You'll create memories that last many lifetimes.
The Gift of New Memories for Your Family.......2003-07-29
What a great book this is!!! Many families would love to have a reunion, but are quickly daunted by what appears to be the enormity of such a project.
This author not only has organized her own large family reunions, but has beautifully and personally given us a simple to follow road map.
With this book you can begin building the strengths and joys a reunion will bring to every family member - and you will be giving the very best present of all - the gift of new memories.
Your family deserves the best - and you can give it to them!!!

A perfect gift for any child!.......1999-04-04
This is the one of the cutest children's books I have ever read......I'm a grandma who is always trying to get my grandchildren (Kelly and Mac) to say "Cheese" for my camera. They will be delighted with it.....if I don't decide to keep it for myself, that is. The book is the shape of a wedge of cheese. The pop-ups are clever and beautifully illustrated, and the text is humorous.
