This book will really comfort you to know that the feelings you are experiencing are okay and you are not alone!

5 out of 5 stars Worth every penny, and more!.......2007-06-04

I was directed to HANNAH'S HOPE by an online friend. We "just happened" to be placing an order at that time, so I added it. When the book arrived last week, I picked it up just to scan through it and couldn't put it down until I absolutely had to.

A couple nights ago when I couldn't sleep, I picked it up again and started from the beginning, highlighter in hand. Only a few chapters in, I'd forgotten the highlighter, forgotten the time, and was just engrossed. Normally, that only happens with fiction or John Piper. This is a great book, and I read the whole thing straight through in that one sitting. In fact, it's still on my current reading list, because I'm going back through it again, more slowly.

I've seen the same tendency in myself that many women battling infertility have, to focus so much on my empty arms that life is miserable not only for me but for everyone around me. But I do not want to be "that woman." My identity is wrapped in the identity of Jesus Christ, whether He ever allows me to a mother or not, and life does not revolve around me or all the ins and outs of infertility and whatever my underlying cause is.

HANNAH'S HOPE is just such a book to help me be the woman I want to be - and that I believe God wants me to be - even if God never gives us children. Mrs. Saake writes from first-person experience with all three child-bearing difficulties she addresses. She's struggled to conceive. She's miscarried multiple times. She and her husband have watched multiple adoptions fall through. She knows what she's about in this arena.

And she is so gracious, and so hopeful! She understands the pain that many women feel, and she understands how nonsensical some of our reactions may seem to what are everyday occurrences to everyone else. But though she kindly acknowledges self-pity and depression as natural emotional responses to everything an infertile or grieving woman is going through, she doesn't allow her readers to wallow. Instead, she points us always, gently, to Christ:

"God knows this grief personally. He has gone to greater measures to make you His child than you will ever go in the pursuit of growing your own family...I like to paraphrase [John 3:16] this way: 'For God so longed to call me His child, that He offered the life of His only biological Son to pay the price of my adoption.'"

As can be assumed by the title, she bases her writing around the story of Hannah from 1 Samuel 1. Each chapter deals with a verse or two from that story, and the various challenges or questions revealed about infertility. She sorts out issues like envy and rivalry, the desire to hear nothing and everything about a friend's or loved one's children at the same time, the impact of infertility and the pursuit of children on marriages, where ethical boundaries are placed by God, how to be a part of a church that seems insensitive to your grief, and how to minister and worship in the midst of heartache.

Mrs. Saake's treatment of such an emotional and devastating issue is one of the best available. HANNAH'S HOPE is written out of a heart that's been there, and has learned to hold tightly to Christ, because only in Him is true strength found.

5 out of 5 stars A true blessing.......2007-05-27

This book has brought to life the story of Hannah for me and brought me great comfort as I struggled to accept my infertility.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2007-05-27

Going through infertility was one of the greatest challengs I had ever faced. After reading "Hannah's Hope", it gave me the hope that I needed. Ms. Saake described exactly how I was feeling. I don't think I could have made it through without that book.

5 out of 5 stars Helped by Hannah's Hope.......2007-05-03

I was given this book just weeks after losing a second long awaited baby that had been conceived after over 3 years of infertility when we were reaching the end of the line with our treatment options. Though everyone around us wanted to help and be encouraging, next to no one could. They simply couldn't begin to understand how much everything hurt and their comments would tax me because they couldn't know what would cause pain. Then came Jenni's book. I literally couldn't stop reading it until I reached the end (at 3:30am). It was like a balm to my spirit to read my own thoughts and words coming from someone else. Her journey has been even longer and harder than mine, and she was able to provide genuine empathy and sound Biblical counsel. I've since bought 10 more copies to give to relatives and churches and have passed it on to other women in our shoes. This is a must read for ANYONE who's going through infertility/child loss or anyone who wants to know how to love them better. A must for pastors as well.

Book Description

"An exceptional book that I enthusiastically recommend to everyone whose life has been touched by the death of a baby." Pat Stauber, RN, MSW, Bereavement Coordinator, North Shore Medical Center, Miami, Florida

Your child's death is like losing a part of yourself. . .

This special book speaks to those who have lost a child through miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death, sudden infant death and termination of pregnancy. It is also for the caregivers who help them through this difficult time. The voices of other parents who have suffered the devastation of their baby's death are heard throughout this warmly written, insightful book.

Part One guides parents through the experience of bereavement, from shock to a time of renewal and coping. Hannah Lothrop gently suggests what has helped other parents in this situation and might help you: ideas that are both comforting and practical for working through grief, shared with compassion and understanding.

Part Two provides specific information for caregivers in the hospital and those providing care for the family. These caregivers may include hospital staff, ministers, childbirth educators, funeral directors and support-group members. An extensive resources section helps parents identify additional sources of support.

Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing Your Baby in Pregnancy or the First Year can help parents consecrate their precious memories of this pregnancy, this baby. And with empathy and first-hand knowledge, Hannah Lothrop also helps bereaved parents start an important healing process that resolves grief into acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars A must-buy for anyone who's lost a baby.......2002-02-03

I didn't know what to do with myself when my son died on Jan. 15, 2002. I still am having a huge amount of trouble, but this book is helping me take steps forward even though part of me does not want to. I have purchased many loss books and this one is the best for practical advice. It helps you feel less alone, offers you ideas on what you will go through (all of which you need) but also gives you practical ideas on what to do to help yourself through this horribly difficult time. It is hands down, one of the best books I bought. If you buy only one loss book, buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Help, Comfort & Hope after Losing your Baby in Pregnancy or.......2000-01-28

This is the best book on the topic of perinatal loss I have read. It is a guide through the grieving process not only for the bereaved parents but also for caretakers, friends and others. This book can help parents make decisions during a time when they may not be able to make decisions or when they not know what their rights and options regarding their precious babies are. It also validates the bereaved parents' feelings, since parents often feel isolated during their grieving process over their child who died before he/she ever lived on this earth. Other parents share their experiences and you realize you are not alone. An exellent book that I will recommend to everybody who has lost a baby or who knows somebody who has lost a baby.

4 out of 5 stars Hannah's Hope.......2007-07-09

Hannah lived with her wealthy maternal grandmother in a stately mansion that lacked the warmth and feeling of family that the maturing15-year old girl craved. A private school and extracurricular activities took up most of her days, but couldn't take the place of the mother and father with whom she rarely spent time.

Her mother hadn't exactly been "mother-of-the-year" material, choosing a life of travel and social prestige over raising her only daughter. She demonstrated her love for Hannah in ways that she felt were proper; the best education, private instruction in dance, voice, and piano.

When she decided not to abandon her busy schedule to spend this Christmas with her daughter, she decided to give Hannah something to console her during the holidays. She told her the truth about her father. Hannah was shocked to find that her biological father was not the man who helped to raise her, but the mysterious man she had seen in her dreams for as long as she could remember.

Hannah's search for her father leads the reader to the battlefields of Iraq before the emotional conclusion in "Hannah's Hope", Karen Kingsbury's last novel in The Red Gloves Series.

5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Read.......2007-01-05

What a lovely read - especially at Christmas time. It warmed the heart.

5 out of 5 stars Believing in and Creating Christmas Miracles .......2005-12-14

During our annual Christmas break from school, the boys and I typically take a lazy afternoon in pajamas and share a special Christmas book. As they've grown older, we've evolved from picture books to lovely inspirational novels. Our selection for this year will be Hannah's Hope by the inspiringly prolific Karen Kingsbury.

Hannah's Hope (Warner Faith, October 2005, hardcover, 176 pages) is the fourth installment in Kingsbury's popular "Red Gloves Series". The series combines compelling stories of love, faith and belief with real world opportunities for service to others.

Hannah's Hope is both an encouragement and a page-turner. From multiple perspectives, the book tells the story of a trio of family members separated and isolated both emotionally and physically. Teenage Hannah appears at first glance to "have it all". She is a busy, intelligent, wealthy girl attending the best school and keeping up with an active extracurricular life. As we come to know Hannah's heart, however, we recognize her acute loneliness, brought on by the fact that her parents live halfway across the world due to their careers.

Hannah's mother, Carol, hasn't let being a mom slow down her drive and ambition. She's made the tough choices, even though this has meant leaving her daughter to be raised by an unfeeling grandmother. Carol daydreams about her eventual run for political office and hiring her daughter as an intern - perhaps then they can have a close relationship. Upon informing Hannah of an impending separation during Christmas, Carol reveals a major surprise that will change the course of Hannah's life.

Carol's secret introduces us to a third character in the book, Mike, and to his life as an officer and helicopter pilot in Iraq. Separated from the only family he knows, Mike longs to be reunited with someone special, and finds a true faith in God and the power of prayer along the way.

Hannah's Hope offers an exciting plot line and a few twists that will keep readers glued to the story. But the true value of this lovely book is in its message of faith, family and belief. If we believe that God ultimately loves and provides for us, we can turn to Him in faith regardless of how insurmountable life's problems and difficulties may seem. He hears us, and in His own way responds to our prayers. Our Christmas miracles may not be as dramatic as Hannah's, but His love for us makes great things possible for each and every one of us.

I am looking forward to sharing Hannah's Hope with my family this season. The "Red Gloves Projects" listed at the end of the book offer wonderful ideas for reaching out to and supporting the men and women of our military, who may be serving far away from loved ones this holiday season. Along with praying for our own Christmas miracles, perhaps our family will have the opportunity to create a few miracles for others in need or lonely this Christmas. It is thanks to our belief in the greatest holiday miracle, the birth of our savior Jesus Christ, that we celebrate this season. In Jesus' name and with his example, sharing love and belief with others should be at the top of our Christmas list this year.

5 out of 5 stars intriguing inspirational.......2005-10-09

While her parents reside in Sweden as her father is the ambassador there, fifteen years old Hannah Roberts lives with a cold grandmother in the DC area while wondering why no one loves her. She looks forward to her parents coming home for the holidays, but that dream is shattered when she receives an email from them informing her that they are too busy to see her. A depressed Hannah sadly prays for a "Christmas Miracle".

Her mother realizes that Hannah is unhappy so she decides to tell her daughter the truth about her biological father, Mike Connor. Hannah now knows her dreams of having fun when she was a child with a loving nurturing adult male were more than just a wish. She searches for her dad, but comes up empty until he hears her plea on TV. Mike tries to make contact before undergoing a dangerous mission in Iraq. When she learns her dad's mission turned deadly and dangerous, she focuses on the hope that her "Christmas Miracle" will come true.

The fourth Red Gloves tale is an intriguing inspirational in which the young heroine cannot understand why she is neglected by her parents who are busy playing diplomat. Though she handles the shock that her mom's husband Jack is not her biological father rather easily, fans will feel Hannah's angst and needs and have some of their own as they wonder; in spite of expecting the obvious that we know deep down will happen, whether a miracle will occur as the heroine hopes. That is the ability of Karen Kingsbury as she keeps her fans enthralled with the idea of will or will not a miracle occur while lifting the spirits of her readers.

4 out of 5 stars People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13

Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"

Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.

The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.

Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.

Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!

Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.

Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11

This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.

44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.

They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.

The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.

3 out of 5 stars god unplugged.......2007-02-02

God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.

5 out of 5 stars After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25

Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24

What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

Book Description

Once upon a time, equipped with a solid marriage, driven careers, and a recently finished basement, my husband and I were ready to start a family. Like many 30-something couples, we thought it would be easy. Unfortunately, after nearly 18 months of doing things "the old fashioned way," my husband was diagnosed with a latent birth defect. It rendered us virtually infertile, not to mention devastated and confused.

The remarkable thing about confusion is that it can spur knowledge and strength. Infertility did just that for us. We moved forward to try to have a child with the help of science and technology. Before we could blink, we were in the midst of monumental efforts to finance our baby-making venture, ordering medications on the Internet, and undergoing multiple, sometimes risky, and invasive, procedures. We endured it all for a single chance to have a child of our own.

Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams: A Story & Lessons About Life, Love, & Infertility is a compelling and insightful look at one couple's struggle with male factor infertility and everything that goes with it. From failed attempts at conception, batteries of fertility tests, and a devastating diagnosis, to IVF/ICSI, other treatments, and ultimately the birth of fraternal twin daughters, Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams offers readers a sense of shared experience through a real-time, personal story. The book also provides first-hand insights, guidance, and quotes covering a range of universal issues including dealing with jealousy, great expectations, doctors, risk, finances, and family. Finally, Pregnancy Wishes comes full circle, leaving readers with twelve, invaluable lessons-learned about life, love, infertility, and numerous questions, and challenges in between.

Like an understanding friend, Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams will leave you feelings less alone, and more empowered as you cope with infertility.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a must read, must buy book.......2007-04-11

Pregancy Wishes and IVF Dreams is an honest and touching account of a couples difficulties with conceiving a child. I have not had to experience infertility directly, but I have a sister and a friend who did. I could also relate to and empathize with Kelley's story as the mother of two children. Kelley Taylor's book is an inspirational story about the challenges that life can present to the reader. It's a must read book for anyone who is facing infertiltity as well as those who have a loved one or friend who is experiencing infertility.

4 out of 5 stars It is a good hopeful book.......2006-11-11

This book is called Hannah's Winter of Hope, also by Jean wan Leeuwen, the third book of the series. It is the winter of 1780 in Fairfield, CT. While she is worrying emotionally about Ben, she is also worried that the British will return to steal their cow and chickens. The year before, the British had burned her house down. Her life is difficult because it is cramped in her father's clock-making shed where they are now living.

Hannah is eleven and not that much different than before, except that she is smarter and has more patience than in the first book. She has more patience and is smarter because when her brother got hurt, she looked at her Grand-ma's book (her Grand-ma was a healer) and patiently wrapped Jonathan's burned hand with the poultice made out of beech leaves. She is smart because she read Granny Hannah's book and helped Jonathan feel better.

The British have captured Hannah's big brother Ben and are holding him on a prison ship. The conditions are very bad. The wood of the prison ship is rotting, and Ben and the other people on the prison ship are treated very badly. They get bran cakes made to feed horses, they sometimes get fed bits of pork, they mostly get fed moldy biscuits, and they sometimes get no food at all for DAYS!! Ben really is brave to go through all that.

The theme of this book is Be hopeful and brave. I would recommend this book for eight and up, because it is easy to read. The text is medium size and the nine chapters are sort of short and easy. This book gave a good description of what life was like back then though it wasn't action packed.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A decent book by Dee Williams.......2004-07-03

"Hannah of Hope Street" by Dee Williams is a decent book about young Hannah Miller who along with her younger sister Alice have ran off from her abusive uncle. She then runs into a gang of thieves, and then the Miller sisters decide to stay with them. In the passing years, Hannah get a job, Alice runs off to live with an actress and then Hannah falls in love with Jack a thief that does want to change his ways, but with the coming of World War 1, all of their live with change forever.

"Hannah of Hope Street" was okay but not Ms. Williams best. The plot seem slow and I could wait for it to end. Other books by Ms. Williams are better, but it might be worth for readers to check out.
