Book Description
Butch O'Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard-living ex-homicide cop, he's the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world-to engage in the turf war with the lessers. His heart belongs to a female vampire, Marissa, an aristocratic beauty who's way out of his league. And if he can't have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers.
But fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, he's found by a miracle, and the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him.

Glad it's out of the way..........2007-10-09
I have loved all of the other BDB books (Zadist being my favorite). But I have to say, I'm really glad this one is out of the way. I've never really cared about Butch and Marissa, she seems whinny and vapid and he goes from being all macho around the brothers to slobbering all over himself cause a pretty girl is near by. But there are some interesting things learned in this book and it held my attention through the end.
At least it's done and hopefully from here the rest of the books will be as good and engrossing as the first three were.
My favorite JR book yet!!!!.......2007-10-02
I loved this book!!!! Butch is my all time favorite character (so far), I knew he would end up with Marissa. But the dynamics and intimacy between Butch and V was awesome, great, fantastic. I loved the way JR wrote the story and created that intimacy between the two guys without it being overtly sexual. I am so glad Marissa finally grew a back bone and stood up to her brother. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I liked it.......2007-09-30
I liked this book. Actually I have enjoyed all of the BDB books by JR Ward (1-4).
NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHERS.......2007-09-25
THIS BOOK SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABOUT V AND BUTCH. THEY HAD THE BEST RELATIONSHIP. I WAS READING HOPING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THEM. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BUTCH AND MARISSA DID NOT DO MUCH FOR ME. HAVING SAID THAT, I LIKED THE BOOK, CAN'T WAIT TO READ ABOUT V LOVE HIM
Book 4 of The Black Dagger Brotherhood Depicts a Soulful Bond Between Brothers & Intense Romance Between the Leading Couple........2007-09-21
Black Dagger Brotherhood Series (Definitely Read Them In Order!):
Dark Lover
Lover Eternal
Lover Awakened
Lover Revealed
Lover Unbound
If you have not been reading this series, be sure to start with the first book and follow the series from there. By the time you reach book 4, you've come to know all of the characters well. Each character has a distinct personality that stays the same from book to book. J.R. Ward keeps them consistent, so you are always glad to be reunited with "the guys". The continuing story is terrific. The bonds between the characters get deeper with each book.
In Book 4, "Lover Revealed", our hero is Butch. He's a man with a big heart, who will do anything to help out a friend. Because he is human, the brothers are very protective of his life. Butch loves his buddies, but he feels he is useless in their world. As an ex- cop, Butch needs to be in the battle. He has been in love with a vampire female, Marissa, for months. With his heart broken over her, Butch feels he has nothing to lose if he is killed.
While attempting to save civilians from enemy slayers, Butch is captured, taken prisoner, tortured, and left for dead. His roommate and best friend, "Vishous", is the only one with the means to find him. The evil enemies have put a poison in Butch's body. Vishous will use his gifts to heal Butch, and he will do all he can to reunite Butch with Marissa. Fierce loyalty and trust between Butch and Vishous make it possible for Butch's dreams to come true. However, the means for making those dreams happen could also cause Butch's death.
Marissa has been cast out by her family. With no place to go, The Brotherhood offers her shelter. When the love between Marissa and Butch intensifies, she begs him not to take part in the war with the brothers' enemies. Butch is devastated. He has to choose between the woman he loves, and the only true family he has ever had. His bond with Marissa is soul- deep, but his love for his brothers and his chance to make a real future for himself are worth any price.
Keeping with the trend of this series, "Lover Revealed" is exquisitely romantic. The love scenes are intense, and the ties between the leading couple are binding. The brothers are loyal to each other, and to Butch, without fail.
Ward writes her characters with personalities that are funny, direct, realistic, and moving. They seem like the kind of men you could meet in everyday life. They pick on each other in good natured teasing, as real brothers tend to, and they back one another as real brothers would. I genuinely like these guys. That makes the books addicting.
Also in this edition:
John's story is continued. Vishous's character plays a major role, preparing readers for his story in the next edition. Mr X is back, but he has a new and surprising scheme.
Book Description

There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood.
The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams.

Its better on the dark side.......2007-10-09
This book is the first in an excellent series. It is technically in the romance aisle (and let me tell you it is VERY explicit) but it leads with the vampire fantasy world and doesn't deviate an inch the whole way through. You will get sucked into the world of the brotherhood and wont be able to turn it down. I read the book straight through in a day and a half and then immediately went out and bought the rest. There is a solid story line and graphic-no-holds-barred sex that could be a cameo in basic instinct. I loved this book and I know you will too. J. R . Ward has the skills to draw you in with well defined characters that make you care about them, then blows your mind and makes you tingly with what goes on behind closed doors!
Definately a Keeper!!!! One of my Absolute Favorites!.......2007-09-20
I have three words for you.....OH. MY. GOD!!!!!!I could not turn the pages fast enough. What an amazing series...amazing story....amazing book! I highly recommend this for anyone who likes Kenyon or Knight the writing and character development in this is a step above. If your thinking twice about buying this series, just buy it, you won't be disappointed.
AMAZING!!!.......2007-09-16
This is one of my all time favorite romance novels. Before meeting the Black Dagger Brotherhood, I had absolutely no interest in paranormal romance. I'd always seen the characters in other books of this genre as being creepy, to say the least. My sister forced me to read this book while on vacation.
WoW!! J D Ward's protagonists are so well-written, so engaging and have such gut-wrenching appeal, I was hooked after chapter 2. She has created a completely unique vampire culture - complete with language (each book has a "glossary of terms"), social traditions and even anatomical/biochemical details unique to her brand of vampire.
If you have never been a fan of this genre...please give this book and the others in the series a try. You will NOT regret it!!
BEST in paranormal romance.......2007-09-13
J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series knocks everything else in the paranormal romance subgenre out of the water. Her characters are, hands down, the most rounded, most complex, most magnetic out there. Ward is concise and well-written where Sherrilyn Kenyon rambles and falters. Her plotline is amazingly intricate, original, and well-executed. Tales of the brothers are always fun and funny, easy to fall into. Where Angela Knight's style can be too technical and too slow, not quite self-confident enough, J.R. Ward's books are easy to read and fast-paced, giving you plenty without giving you too much. Even Kresley Cole, my second-favorite author, doesn't do the world-building and character exploration J.R. Ward does. The one down spot, for me anyway, is the lessers. I have trouble making myself read those parts, but then again, I can at times be a lazyish reader who won't deviate from the main characters' storyline. Overall, I'd give this an A+.
Oh heck yeah!.......2007-09-11
Great series - totally worthy of my time and money. Absolutely could not put them down.
Book Description
Even within the vampire brotherhood, Zsadist is feared. Still bearing the scars from a tortured past, he is renowned for his unquenchable fury. Anger is his only companion, and terror is his only passion-until he rescues a beautiful female from the evil Lessening Society.
Customer Reviews:
The best book of the series.......2007-09-29
I read all the BDB books (5 so far), and this is still for me the best one. Zsadist will always be my favorite vampire! Hope JR Ward continues to write books of this excellent quality.
My perfect vampire tale.......2007-09-27
AWESOME!!! The best of the first three!!! I absolutely loved Bella and Zsadists' story!!! Having read book one (Dark Lover) and book two (Lover Eternal) I was already addicted to the series. As amazing as the first two books were, this tale struck a chord in me, it's about facing terrible personal demons and finding a way to heal, something we've all been through. This was the tightest page turner of the three, the books just keep getting better and better. This had the most plot, but was crafted in such away that I never wanted to put the book down, even after my mind was numb from reading. And Zsadist and Bella are two unforgettable characters, their story is touching, deep, emotional. I was so sad when I got to the last page, but I've got more of the series to read, and re-read again!
OH MY GOD.......2007-09-25
OH MY GOD. LOVED ZSADIST. I PURCHASED THESE BOOKS ABOUT 6 WEEKS AGO AND HAVE ALREADY READ THEM TWICE (Z'S BOOK 3 TIMES) SHE IS THE BEST WRITER I HAVE EVER HAD THE PLEASURE TO READ. I CAN'T WAIT FOR BOOK 5
Great Series!.......2007-09-24
I didn't like this book as much as #2 but I still liked it enough to give it a 5 star rating. I love the series. I have read books 1 - 2 at least twice already. I am on a reading marathon trying to catch up so that when LU comes out tom. (book #5), I'll be up to speed with everyone else that follows the series.
Anway, after reading this book, you come away liking Z more. The book also preps readers for Phury's story. Can't wait for that one and I'm already eagerly waiting for Tohr's return. I highly recommend the series but would suggest readers start with book 1 to better appreciate the plots and characters.
Can't get enough of Ward's BDB series!.......2007-09-20
This is the third book of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, telling the story of Bella and Zsadist. I absolutely love this series and am actually rereading the whole thing yet again to be ready for the next book in the series due at the end of Sept. I highly recoommend this book, although I must admit Lover Awakened wasn't my favorite of the four available to date. However, I came away liking Zhadist a whole lot better, and this story had to be told before Ward can give us Phury's story, which I'm dying for!

Forty years ago, Bob Lee Swagger's father, a state trooper, was killed by two robbers in an Arkansas shoot-out. Now a young writer has arrived at Swagger's door with some penetrating and troubling questions. What really happened that long-ago Arkansas night? The powers that be don't want that question answered, but Swagger, to his surprise, finds that he does -- even if it means having to use his long-abandoned combat skills and cunning to find out. Like the infrared "black light" that exposes a sniper's target in the night, Swagger homes in on the shadowy figures desperate to keep the secret of his father's murder buried.
Book Description
Only one thing stands between a son and his father's killer: forty years of lies..
On a remote Arizona ranch, a man who has known loss, fear, and war weeps for the first time since he was a child. His tears are for the father taken from him four decades before in a deadly shoot-out. And his grief will lead him back to the place where he was born, where his father died, and where a brutal conspiracy is about to explode.
For Bob Lee Swagger, the world changed on that hot day in Blue Eye, Arkansas, when two local boys rode armed and wild in a '55 Fairlane convertible. Swagger's father, Earl, a state trooper, was investigating the brutal murder of a young woman that day. By midnight Earl Swagger lay dead in a deserted cornfield.
Now Bob Lee wants answers. He wants to know the truth behind the shoot -out that took his father's life, a mystery buried in forty years of lies. Because for Bob Lee Swagger, the killing didn't end that day in Blue Eye, Arkansas. The killing had just begun...
Weaving together characters from his national bestsellers Point of Impact and Dirty White Boys, Stephen Hunter's gripping thriller builds to an exhilarating climax--and an explosion of gunfire that blasts open the secrets of two generations.

Black Light.......2007-05-25
Stephen Hunter's "Black Light" is an action thriller that is difficult to
put down. Bob Lee Swagger, the character in "Point of Impact", becomes interested in his father's death which occurred many years earlier. It becomes clear that Earl Swagger was killed by a sniper and not in a shootout with the Pry boys as thought. Who killed him and why? There are powerful people in the plot that do not want that known. You will have to read the book find out.
Point of Impact is now available on DVD as "The Shooter". Black Light with its action and suspense would have you on the edge of your seat if it were made into a movie.
Get your fill of a manly man book.......2007-04-23
I've read a few of Hunter's books now and felt that this one veered into the testosterone laden land that Lee Child's characters venture into, as well.
The book was interesting, but not as strong as _Point of Impact_. And, was it just me or was Swagger depicted as more of a stereotypical hillbilly in this book compared to POI?
Overall, the Hunter books are definitely guilty pleasure reading books that I'll read in a day or so.
Part of a winning literary trifecta.......2007-03-04
When I was younger, my reading M.O. was fairly simple: I'd find a writer I liked, and then read everything they ever wrote. This worked well for a while, as I worked my way through the offerings of such genre greats as Ray Bradbury, Harlan Ellison and Robert Bloch. Over the years, however, my tastes expanded to the point where I could no longer indulge myself that way ("So many books, so little time.") Before Stephen Hunter, I hadn't read three books in a row by the same author in fifteen years.
A good friend of mine turned me on to Hunter, recommending POINT OF IMPACT, wherein the author introduces Bob Lee Swagger, a professional shooter known to his peers as "Bob the Nailer." In POINT, Swagger becomes involved in a conspiracy of massive proportions and has to fall back on the lethal skills he learned in Vietnam in order to extricate himself. The incredible action sequences and the swift pacing of POINT left me anxious for more.
I moved on to DIRTY WHITE BOYS, which has one of the most memorable first lines you'll ever read. DWB tells the story of lawman Bud Pewtie and his encounter with an escaped convict, the savage and wily Lamar Pye. As Pewtie's son says later in BLACK LIGHT, "They were fated somehow, mixed together." Pewtie seems to have a strange affinity for Pye, tracking him against all odds until the two square off in an epic battle at book's end. By now I was well and truly hooked on Hunter.
Imagine my glee when I heard that he had just published another book, the last leg of a loose knit trilogy involving POINT OF IMPACT and DIRTY WHITE BOYS. BLACK LIGHT tells the tale of Russ Pewtie, son of lawman Bud, who decides to write a book about Earl Swagger, Bob Lee's father. Russ is fascinated by Earl, who died in a bloody shootout with Jimmie Pye, Lamar's daddy. Pewtie enlists the reluctant Bob Lee's help, and together they travel back to west Arkansas to investigate the strange circumstances of Earl Swagger's death. Their arrival stirs up a world of trouble, and only Bob Lee's extraordinary talent for survival keeps the pair alive.
These novels really cook. Hunter is a truly American phenomenon--his prose evokes Steinbeck (the parallels to OF MICE AND MEN in DIRTY WHITE BOYS really strike a chord) and Faulkner, and his obsession with the past reeks of Ross MacDonald. Don't get me wrong, though, this ain't no "lit'ry" book as Lamar Pye might say. These novels speed along like runaway freight trains--the action is intense, and the suspense Hunter generates is on the level of Forsythe's DAY OF THE JACKAL or David Morrell in TESTAMENT or BLOOD OATH. Hunter also has a sense of humor--if he doesn't leave you sweating, he'll leave you laughing.
Hunter also displays great expertise in the field of weaponry; the pages of these books teem with gun lore and technical minutiae. Guns and rifles play an integral part in these tales, providing insight into the protagonists and the world they inhabit. Hunter may be entirely wrong on the details, but he writes with such authority I doubt that's the case. I'm not a big gun fan, but I found the level of detail fascinating.
Hunter is a powerful, violent, unsettling, entertaining and informative writer. I ended my streak at three straight, but I continue to eagerly snap up any title with Hunter's name on the cover.
worth reading but not his best (Swagger) work.......2006-08-02
After setting a very high standard with "Point Of Impact" and "Dirty White Boys" this book could not completely fulfil the expectations I had when I started it.
Even if the plot and its conclusion is not the best in my opinion, this book is again well written and entertaining.
It also builds an interesting bridge between the formerly mentioned books by actively linking the history and fate of Bob Lee Swagger and his farther Earl.
If you want to know the whole story you just will have to read this book as well.
Wonderfully Crafted with dark southern Faulkneresque undertones.......2006-06-27
Stephen Hunter's books are definitely 'man books'. His characters - both Hero and villain - speak, plot, act and think believably and often with total male aggresion and intent. These attributes are necessary given the situations the characters frequently find themselves in. Black Light is a well woven story that flashes between a tragic day in 1955 in the sweltering summer of Arkansas and present day, which is a story spanning from Arizona to Oklahoma and back into the Natural State. I've read 'suspense' or 'action' novels where the character's believability could be knocked over with a medium-weight q-tip.........not Hunters ! His characters and their dialogue are believeable, their development is weighty and his prose is engrossing. Oh yeah, the action is top notch.....but, given Hunter's craftsementship with the pen, the action scenes are not even required to 'make' the story. His writing is so good, that the action scenes are just an extra bonus. All of his Swagger books are solid. These would make a great movie if given to the RIGHT director.

Customer Reviews:
Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Well, this is pretty much porn, and not very good at that. The almost complete absence of plot, etc. The Warlord story has valkyries who are supposed to kill vampires, etc.
So, the first thing the captured valkyrie does for him is a striptease. All parties are quite braindead here it seems, hormones overactive, even for immortals where that is not supposed to be a factor.
Great for Kresley Cole fans...........2007-09-01
I'm a fan of the Immortals after Dark series so I bought this book mainly for the story of Myst the Coveted by Kresley Cole. It was pretty good. It's a short story so obviously couldn't be as involved as Emmaline's or Kaderin's stories - but it was not a disapointment. If you like KC's series it's a must buy as it fills in a lot of the blank spaces about the Forebearers and their place in the Lore. The only thing that wasn't clear was the full truth of Myst's "chain" - its power and place over her seemed a bit vague.
Sherrilyn Kenyon's story was entertaining, too. I've never read one of her BAD stories as I prefer the Dark Hunters but it didn't disappoint. It was fast-paced and full of action - if a bit far-fetched. But hey...this is escapist literature.
The down side to this book was Jaid Black's Story. In my opinion it was just plain STU-PID. Ancient Vikings living in an underground nation of that size in Alaska undetected by modern satellite, seismic and geologic equipment? Alaska? Where they are constantly looking for gold and oil? Come on! The idea for the whole culture was preposterous. It reeked of a cleaned up, less pornographic, less amusing, less believably inventive, earthly version of her Trek MiQ'an Series. At least the TM Series gets you interested in what happens to the characters and (even though I have serious issues with the psychology behind this series) you want to know what happens next. This story just left me with an incredulous grimace and a snort.
So, on the whole, I'd give Ms. Kenyon and Ms. Cole 4 stars for their stories and Ms. Black gets a 1. So on the average I give this one a 3. If you're an Immortals fan - get it. But if you're luke-warm towards Ms. Cole then just get it at the library otherwise it wouldn't be worth the money.
Worth it just for the Kresley Cole story.......2007-07-22
If you enjoy Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark Series...you NEED to read the story of Myst and Wroth. I read "hunger like no other" and "no rest for the wicked" before reading this, and "the warlord wants forever" fills in a lot about what is going on in the other books, especially "hunger like no other". I don't particularly like reading anthologies b/c I feel like the short stories don't have enough development to be truly good, but this was not the case with this story, maybe b/c I was already filled in about a lot of what was going on from reading "a hunger like no other". But this story leaves you very very very satisfied, without the feeling on being cheated. I haven't read the other stories, b/c i bought this book just to read the IAD story, and it was WELL WORTH IT!!!! It is steamier than both the other full length books in the series in my opinion!!
Buy just for the Kresley Cole story!.......2007-06-19
If you love the Immortals After Dark Series by Kresley Cole you will love this book.
A must have for lovers of Kresley Cole.......2007-04-30
I rate all three stories here as enjoyable, good reads. And in the case of the third entry, by Kresley Cole, it adds a key increment in her Immortals After Dark series (IAD).
a) The story by Sherrilyn Kenyon in a refreshing break from her Dark Hunters series. The story is more like a fantasy island treat, and a little remininscent of Fantasy Lover, where a young woman leading a quiet life has a sexual awakening as her friends turn to a contest to give her life a little spice. It is in keeping with other stories of Ms. Kenyon's that are written with humor, and good sex.
b) Jaid Black is a great writer of erotic romantic fiction. In this story, Hunter's Oath, a contemporary woman is kidnapped into slavery by a band of roque Vikings who live underground and kidnap brides from the surface. So this is a forced seduction story. The funny part of this story is that the protagonist inadvertenly takes a powerful aphrodisiac just before her body goes up for sale, and she's got a struggle on her hands to manage the burgeoning relationship with the guy as well as the chemical effects of the aphrodisiac at the same time. Ms. Black has a similar story called Hunter's Right in a different anthology by Sherrilyn Kenyon: Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down: Three Tales of Erotic Romance. I found Hunter's Right to be better than Hunter's Oath, and they are very similar stories.
c) This is the story that every lover of Kreley Cole's IAD series should have on their shelf. It tells the story of Valkyrie Myst, the Coveted, and how she hooked up with General Nikolai Wroth, the Vampire. Valkyries usually HATE Vampires. In the two other follow-up novels, Myst and Wroth have been hanging around in the background, already a couple. In this story we see that Myst was a man-hater of long standing before she got together with Wroth. For a millenia or two she's worn a magical belt around her waist. Wroth figures out that the man who gets his hands on that belt can dominate this Valkyrie, and the tables are soon turned. ;-)

A really steamy hot novel.......2007-10-06
Morgan O'Malley is the hostess of a cable sex talk show and she has seen and heard a lot of things, but she never met someone like Master J, whom she wants to interview for an upcoming special show about BDSM. Unfortunately, during their first meeting Morgan discovers that her stalker, the reason why she fled from L.A, followed her the whole way to Houston. Master J. aka Jack takes over the situation and saves her. He brings her to his home to keep her safe while he tries to find out who is threatening her life. But he doesn't do it for nothing because he has his own agenda where comes to Morgan. He plans to introduce her to the world of domination and submission, as well as seeks to get revenge for a past betrayal. Will Jack and Morgan realize that there is something very special between them? And will Jack discover that there is something more important than revenge?
WICKED TIES grabbed this reader's interest from the first page and she couldn't stop reading till she reached the end. She was really sorry when the story ended because it's one of the stories that you don't want to end.
The whole plot idea was fantastic, the reader gets so involved in the story and you can hardly wait to see what happens next, because the story is not predictable. Till the end you are wondering who is really the stalker or if Jack will get over his betrayal and be able again to love.
The characters are so great; they are realistic, lovable and just lovable, no matter if it is the hero and the heroine or the secondary characters. WICKED TIES is a very emotional book with characters to believable that readers can easily follow their inner struggles and understand the conflicts they have to overcome.
In the opinion of the reader, WICKED TIES is a master of BDSM erotic romance because the book perfectly shows the trust, which is so important in a BDSM relationship.
WICKED TIES is a wickedly hot book with great love scenes and not to forget a very hot Ménage scene.
This reviewer can highly recommend this book to everyone who loves hot and sensual stories. Ms. Black is an author you definitely want to keep an eye on. This reader really hopes that there will be a sequel, because there are some very interesting secondary characters.

sizzling!.......2007-09-29
Although I would have liked for the story to be a little more developed, it didn't deter from my enjoyment of this book. It sizzles! You won't be disappointed!
What a 1st Impression.......2007-09-23
Well damn!! I bought this book at RAW on a whim. I had read Secret Desire or something and it was O-K..but nothing I felt the need to discover more.
Wicked Ties!!..WoW. I read this in a day. I just couldnt put it down and when I did I was thinking about it. As a woman who loves the D/s aspect of sexuality I thought this story was great. As a vindictive woman, Jack's dirt in the begining didnt really bother me to the point of being turned off. I loved the way he pushed her and was relentless. He was so intuned to her vibe. She needed it. Now would it work in real life..No,a true Master wouldnt be quite so pushy but damn it was sexy when Jack did and it worked on a Saturday afternoon.
I loved that she added Deke and Jack gave her everything that she wanted even with his own little demons.
The tension started word one and the story was great. I can't wait for the next book in this series. I might even have to read a few more other things to bide my time.
Steamy for sure but...........2007-08-23
This was the first book by Shayla Black that I had read. She was recommended to me by a few friend who knew that I enjoyed Lora Leigh. I really do enjoy the alpha male characters and this book at plenty of that, actually it was a bit much. While I found that the book kept my interest and the sex scenes were great, I kept getting hung up on the Dominant/Submissive thing. I tried so hard to get over it but I can't, it really ruined it for me. I did give the book 4 stars because it was well written. I think if you are ok with the Dominant/Sumissive thing they you will really really like this book!
For fans of Shannon McKenna, Jaid Black and Lora Leigh........2007-08-08
Hot! Hot! Hot! Shayla Black is an author to watch, with her steamy, suspense filled plot you'll be hooked from the 1st chapter, just make sure you've got a bucket of water on hand to cool you down. Morgan O'Malley's under threat from a stalker and has come to Houston to hide out by posing as the fiancé of her secret half-brother Brandon. This only serves to put her under the notice of Jack Cole who's determined to revenge himself against Brandon by stealing his woman. Incognito he seeks her out online posing as a dominant who's looking for a sexual relationship with her, and he intrigues her so much by his reading of her sexual needs that she agrees to meet him, only to nearly fall victim to a bullet. Jack appoints himself as her bodyguard, but finds that he's being driven by more than the need for vengeance. Jack is as alpha as they come and is about to teach Morgan how good it can be to completely bend to someone else's will, but don't worry, Morgan's no pushover and the only place she'll take orders is in the bedroom. This is dark, intense, carnal reading and all I can say is, next please!!

Book Description
The tragicomedy of a young man in NYC, struggling with the reality of his mother's death, alienation and the seductive pull of drugs.
Customer Reviews:
"Partying is such sweet sorrow." .......2007-07-29
His writing style has been compared to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Waugh. Jay McInerney's (1955) breakthrough novel, Bright Lights Big City (1984), tells the story (in second-person narrative) of an unnamed, divorced ("sexually abandoned"), 24-year-old protagonist's exit from the New York City fast lane. By day he works as a fact checker for a literary magazine, and by night he immerses himself in the trendy New York party scene. (Much like his protagonist, McInerney himself worked as a fact-checker at The New Yorker and was no stranger to the NYC social scene.) With his unique wit, McInerney's coming-of-age, urban-angst novel offers scathing insights into the mid-1980's cocaine party culture. I also recommend McInerney's more recent novels, Brightness Falls (1992) and The Good Life (2006).

Best book out of the Literary Brat Pack era.......2007-07-07
I've read all of the brat back authors, and I wouldn't jump in and say that any of their works are magnificent literary masterpieces. Bight lights, big city, however, is by far the best novel to come from this period. High Points: Excellent, unprecidented use of 2nd person narrative; witty, satiric, paraodic, and humanistic at heart; very accesible, nothing too over the top, and it avoids pointless refernces to the flat pop-culture of the 80's. I actually have no complaints about this book, but then I don't think many people are going to be talking much about it hereafter. It is more of an entertaining artifact of the 80's than a great work of literature.
Witty, not funny........2007-06-02
I found this book to be frustrating and sad. At first, I thought the unnamed main character was your typical yuppie who is caught up in Manhattan's fast paced, drug induced night life because that is what young, unattached adults do. But then you find out all the bad things that have happened in his life. The drug induced night life made more sense. It was his way of coping with his loses. I thought the writing was clever. Maybe too clever. Some reader's found humor in it. There were some witty parts. "Tad's mission in life is to have more fun than anyone else in New York City, and this involves a lot of moving around, since there is always the likelihood that where you aren't is more fun than where you are." I wouldn't classify this book as "funny" however. I think the writer found an interesting way of describing how a young guy, living in a fast paced world of the 80's, is dealing with loss and loneliness.
Bright Lights, Big City.......2007-02-09
First of all let me nail my flag to the mast - I'm a Jay McInerney (and Bret Easton Ellis) fan. I know a lot of people aren't - but then I'm cooler than a lot of people.
Interesting from the opening line and written in the second person ("You are not the kind of guy who would be at a place like this at this time of the morning"), Brights Lights, Big City is a satirical portrait of a young lost soul trying to find meaning in an apprantly meaningless world. Set in New York City in the 1980s our hero walks zombie-like through clubs, self-indulgence, drugs and meaningless relationships. He hates his job and is basically a mess who is wasting his life. Just as we were beginning to think that our hero has an amazingly shallow existence - he is revealed as being more than a simple waster. He has, in fact, been abandoned by his new wife, is estranged from his family and has aspirations to be a writer of fiction. He is human after all and the question he faces is whether or not he can be bothered to get his life back. Will cynicism or optimism prevail?
McInerney (like Ellis) is often dismissed as a writer of disposable "drug stories" with little literary ability. I disagree. If you are able to look a little deeper you will find plenty of interesting social commentary.
Dealing with loss.......2007-01-19
This is a very sensitively and humanely written novel about a young New Yorker who must deal with several great losses: of his beautiful fashion model wife who abandons him when she moves to France, of his job as a magazine editor, and of his mother. At first I find him self-indulgent and silly, but as I get to know and understand him better, he turns out to be merely sad. Hence, his increased bar hopping and abuse of cocaine.
He acts as if he does not care about the loss of his job through carelessness and indifference. He becomes increasingly depressed and comes close to developing a nervous breakdown. The search for his wife is sadly pathetic. I developed a real empathy for this young man and came to realize that under similar circumstances, he could be you, me--any of us. By the conclusion of the book, through meeting someone new and a cathartic experience, he finally confronts the painful memories of his mother's death. He sees that he "will have to go slowly...and learn everything all over again." He is on his way to recovery.

Customer Reviews:
A good, fast paced read!.......2007-09-30
This is the second book of Ann Stuart's ICE series that I have read. It was a fun, fast paced and pretty entertaining. Here you have the typical bad boy who does not care for anything or anyone but for completing his mission and the lead lady who will disrupt all his plans and eventually make him seem more human...I thought that the end was just to abrupt, which lead to disappointment....I just think the author should have put more effort and given us a more detailed ending.
Hot read.......2007-08-30
I love Stuart's plots of women in the wrong place at the wrong time with dark, long-haired dangerous men. The interactions between the main characters are hot. I'm currently reading Cold as Ice and loving it. I first read Ice Blue and couldn't believe where the book was taking me.
Hope others enjoy them as much as I did. I also hope Ms. Stuart continues to give us more "Ice" books, courtesy of the Committee.
Amazing Series.......2007-08-09
Anne Stuart is amazing. I believe this is the first of the Ice series and I literally could not put it down until I was done. Great supsense, plot twists and of course, romance!
For fans of Linda Howard and Suzanne Brockmann........2007-08-08
Toss any preconceptions of a romantic hero right out the window. Right now. Done? Now imagine Bastien: cold as ice, enigmatic, complex, lethally dangerous, not entirely sure if he's good or bad. World-weary, not frightened to die but not willing to be slaughtered. An intelligent survivor with assassin instincts. A uber alpha male! Multi-lingual book translator Chloe Underwood accidentally blunders into a scene of arms dealing. She thinks she's been engaged to translate for a group of international importers who deal mainly with groceries. She's terrified when she realizes she's dealing with weapons, and tries to escape the tight security of the remote French chateau where the `importers' are meeting. That is the start of her nightmare, worst-case scenario. Sex, blood, violence, grisly death, torture, the balance of power swaying back and forth - who knows where this book will end. You can't possibly tell when you begin to read it! As for Bastien - how can Chloe figure out if he's the good guy when he can't or won't allay any of her fears? This book will push the boundaries of romance waaaay back. It reads like a very very very dark Alias, on speed. Not for the faint-hearted!
Four women and a man........2007-07-23
I don't understand the heroine, Chloe. She gets tortured by a sadist with a hot knife and all she worries about is that the so-called friend who sent her into such a dangerous situation will be angry when she returns her ruined designer clothes. In fact. Until the aforementioned friend, her room-mate Sylvia, was horribly murdered I was half-inclined to think she was one of the bad people in the plot.
One of the interesting things about this novel is that quite a few women get killed. But not in that slash-and-kill sexual way but in a 'bad people die' sort of manner. Another quirk is that it is the hero who is the object of sexual desire for most of the women featured in the story.
This novel is much better than a 'romantic suspense' genre. It is actually a good thriller with a hefty helping of sex and romance between the main couple. And a high body count. Plus quite a bit of emotional and physical pain.
Just for a change I thought the bad people were all totally plausible.
Obviously Black Ice is not as mesmerising as Cold As Ice. The heroine spends too much of the novel sleeping or drugged. And the relationship between the main couple has almost no quiet moments where they can just enjoy or discover each other's personality. However Chloe and Bastian do get around to declaring their love for each other...something that was missing from Cold As Ice.
It's still a better than average romance read though.
I like Anne Stuart's couples. Despite the fact that they are all privately educated, tend to come from old money and are better-than-average in the looks department...men and women. That's preferable to the romance trend (no doubt started by the success of Jane Eyre) where handsome heroes get involved with dogs. Just because most people work for a living does not mean that they are ugly.

But what she discovers in an old codebook is something juicier than she ever imagined.

"The author of The Secret History of the Pink Carnation continues the romantic adventures of England's greatest spy with a newly arrived adversary from France, the murderous Black Tulip The Pink Carnation, history's most elusive spy and England's only hope for preventing a Napoleonic invasion, returns in Lauren Willig's dazzling imaginative new historical romance. The Masque of the Black Tulip opens with the murder of a courier from the London War Office, his confidential dispatch for the Pink Carnation stolen. Meanwhile, the Black Tulip, France's deadliest spy, is in England with instructions to track down and kill the Pink Carnation. Only Henrietta Uppington and Miles Dorrington know where the Pink Carnation is stationed. Using a secret code book, Henrietta has deciphered a message detailing the threat of the Black Tulip. Meanwhile, the War Office has enlisted Miles to track down the notorious French spy before he (or she) can finish the deadly mission. But what Henrietta and Miles don't know is that while they are trying to find the Black Tulip (and possibly falling in love), the Black Tulip is watching them."
Customer Reviews:
Great sequel!!.......2007-10-10
This was the second installment of Lauren Willig's Pink Carnation series. Be sure to read The Secret History of the Pink Carnation first. The Masque of the Black Tulip was funny and romantic. Willig is an excellent writer. I flew right through this book. - worth the money.
pale shadows.......2007-09-20
I really wanted to like Ms. Willig's books. I was excited when I first saw "Pink Carnation" on the shelves of the bookstore. But I can't read them without feeling as though I'm reading another inadequate Georgette Heyer imitator. I have never found an author who can even approach Ms. Heyer at her best, and all of them seem to use her books as source material (whether they actually do or not, it seems that way). "Pink Carnation", "Black Tulip" et al. also remind me of one of my all-time favorite books, a short, YA title called "The Sherwood Ring" by Elizabeth Pope. Why? Well, its that modern-girl-in-library mixed with chapters of historical fiction approach. The Sherwood Ring worked the same way. OK- accuse me of having read so much historical fiction/romance that I can't avoid seeing similarities. It's probably true, but unfortunately, although I want to love Ms. Willig's books, they seem mostly about repeating conventions, rather than adding new ingredients.
As long as you're not expecting a serious historical romance/mystery..........2007-08-21
Yet again, Ms. Willig impressed me with her lighthearted take on historical romance/mystery! Although I read these books in the completely WRONG order (first Emerald Ring, then Pink Carnationa, and finally Black Tulip), I was taken in by all of them--this one no less than the others. Although I felt that the "oh no heroine might be compromised marry her off quickly" story line was somewhat repetitive between this installment and Emerald Ring, the stories of Henrietta and Miles vs. Letty and Geoff were different enough to keep me intrigued. I'll just say that I can't wait for the 4th Pink Carnation novel!
Not Much of a Mystery or Historically interesting.......2007-08-15
Being a large fan of historical fiction (and non-fiction), I was prepared for the usual period correct historical backdrop and a story based true events that were wrapped in an intriguing twisting story. I would say on both the historical and mystery fronts, the author only succeeded half way.
Although the novel is technically set during the Napoleon era, the rest of the story didn't fit correctly with the time period. The banter was amusing, but unlike what people would say at that time. In addition, there were references to things, such as adoption, which I believe didn't exist at the time in the way Henrietta referred to it (put oneself up for adoption). The interactions seemed to be supplanted from the present to that era, with the only the costumes and setting working for the period theme.
The "mystery" of who was the Black Tulip was not interesting or a mystery. Vaughn being the Black Tulip was a dead horse that was so obviously not correct. Most of the plot wasn't about the Black Tulip, but the romance between Miles and Henrietta. I am a fan of romance novels, but this wasn't the plot. The romance distracted from the real goal of the book, which was spy with a flower alias.
I thought the book was a good read, but would not read it again. The author should have picked a genre. She didn't pick a historical novel, a mystery or a romance. She had some jumbled hodge-podge of all three that didn't harmonize.
Better than THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION.......2007-06-13
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series - THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE PINK CARNATION. I thought it was funny and imaginative. But the second book is even better. The author finds her stride.
The story of Lady Henrietta and Miles is better developed. I continue to like the switching back and forth between the current romance/mystery and the 200-year-old one, although some say the story about Eloise and Colin is superfluous.
If you like this book, don't miss the first in the series or the next, which is THE DECEPTION OF THE EMERALD RING.

Customer Reviews:
No Soapbox.......2007-08-23
Bought the book with trepidation, because my experience with most veggie authors has been preachy. This was refreshing in that it allows folks to be where they are . . and make gradual choices. Even one story where relationship and connecting at a friends meal was more important than being a purist vegetarian. Refreshing, well written and a great primer for those wanting to know how to eat correctly making the switch.
Little Gem.......2007-05-15
This is a short little book I bought because I was contemplating becoming a vegetarian for spiritual reasons. Eating In The Light spells out the different kinds of vegetarians and gives some general recommendations regarding nutrition and making the transition to vegetarianism all from a spiritual standpoint. If you already know about vegetarianism this may be too basic for you, but for the individual just beginning to contemplate the path, I think it's very helpful.
Gives permission for all the types of vegetarians.......2003-01-07
I found this book pretty helpful. I especially liked the fact that they're not pushing strict anti-carnivourism as the only way. I also liked the fact that it is a smaller pocket size. I can take it when I go shopping and refer to it.
Do another seach, there is a better book for you out there.......2002-11-01
I read others' reviews before I bought this book and I have to say that I am very surprised that no one mentions that it is only a 4x6 inch, slim, pocket book! As you can imagine, it contains very little information. It will take you about half an hour to read, maybe an hour if you read slowly. If you are already a vegaterian, then you don't need to buy this - I promise you there is nothing that you don't already know in this book. If you are not a vegetarian, then you are better off buying a more comprehensive book on the subject...
Learning about Vegetarianism & Spirituality.......2001-08-02
This is a wonderful book for anyone who has questions about becoming a vegetarian, or for people who already are vegetarian. It helps one to make informed decisions on the very personal choice of whether to eat meat and animal products. I became a vegetarian over two years ago after reading Dr. Virtue's book Divine Guidance, where she states that she was informed during meditation that her clairvoyance was being inhibited by eating meat and ingesting the pain from the animal flesh.
I highly recommend this book. I love the practical, how-to information included on how to shop for and prepare vegetarian food, as well as tips on how to order vegan and vegetarian meals in restaurants, and how to handle situations like eating meals with family and friends who do not follow a vegetarian lifestyle. The book is sized small enough so you can even take it with you in your purse or pocket to restaurants and health food stores for easy reference. It is a highly educational companion for anyone on a spiritual path, or anyone simply looking to make more healthful choices in their life.
