Book Description

Set in our own time along the bloody frontier between Texas and Mexico, this is Cormac McCarthy’s first novel since Cities of the Plain completed his acclaimed, best-selling Border Trilogy.

Llewelyn Moss, hunting antelope near the Rio Grande, instead finds men shot dead, a load of heroin, and more than $2 million in cash. Packing the money out, he knows, will change everything. But only after two more men are murdered does a victim’s burning car lead Sheriff Bell to the carnage out in the desert, and he soon realizes how desperately Moss and his young wife need protection. One party in the failed transaction hires an ex–Special Forces officer to defend his interests against a mesmerizing freelancer, while on either side are men accustomed to spectacular violence and mayhem. The pursuit stretches up and down and across the border, each participant seemingly determined to answer what one asks another: how does a man decide in what order to abandon his life?

A harrowing story of a war that society is waging on itself, and an enduring meditation on the ties of love and blood and duty that inform lives and shape destinies, No Country for Old Men is a novel of extraordinary resonance and power.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Novel!.......2007-10-09

This novel grips you on page one and doesn't let go till the end. It's really a simple story but simple in the sense that the greatest art is the simplest art. McCarthy makes it look easy, but the novel is an extremely skilled journey through a myriad of considerations. As a writer, McCarthy is unexcelled among current practitioners. His dialog is so accurate and authentic that your head will spin. His ability to build tension and excitement is superb. All writers can learn from McCarthy. All readers can enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Startling and affecting..........2007-10-08

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN is, essentially, a novel about good and evil masquerading as a chase novel. Vietnam vet Llewellyn Moss is hunting antelope on the Texas plains one morning when he discovers what appears to be a drug deal gone bad: men lying gutted in the grass, dead or dying, surrounded by heroin and millions of dollars in cash. Llewellyn takes as much of the money as he can carry and leaves the rest of the scene as he found it, and it isn't long before he's being pursued across the plains by a deadly hunter: Anton Chigurh, a ruthless, unfeeling assassin who will kill anyone who gets in his way. Sheriff Bell, a celebrated war hero on the cusp of his retirement, is pursuing Moss as well, and his narrative serves as a framework for the novel.

I am relatively new to Cormac McCarthy; besides THE ROAD, this is the only book of his I've read. But I think even if I had read everything he'd ever written, I'd still be awed at his remarkable ability to say so much with so few words. This enormous talent, this ability to create complexity and depth out of simplicity, is what makes him one of the greatest authors of our time. NCFOM is McCarthy at his sparsest, and yet somehow, he brings the world of his novel completely to life for readers: It is a place of ruthlessness and violence, and of tenderness and gentleness that juxtapose the lack of compassion so brilliantly. In this novel, people make choices with drastic consequences -- and virtually no one makes the right choice. I don't think anyone could thoroughly dissect this novel and find its true meaning with one reading, but here's my take: I think McCarthy's making a statement about the difference between the old world and the new -- the world where soldiers carry around guilt for their whole lives about an incident that may or may not have made them a hero, and the world where men kill without guilt, without compassion, without regard. What happened to that old world? McCarthy seems to lament -- that world of honor, of "taking care of things," of violence that was only exhibited on foreign shores, in foreign wars? The vista of his novel is, clearly, not a country for the men from that world. Certain passages in the book seem to indicate that the only things we can hold on to, the only things that can keep us human -- the only things LEFT from that old world -- are the moments of tenderness we steal with our loved ones.

Cormac McCarthy is not for everyone -- especially not for those looking for lite reading. He will make you think, make you shake your head at the state of the world, and probably make you cry. But do read him for a pure, unadulterated glimpse into what makes us all human, for an incredibly emotional, provocative reading experience. NCFOM is profound, and affecting, and thrilling, and a novel not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Turn on all the lights..........2007-09-26

Brace yourself for a scary read and make sure all the lights are turned on. This story is a real page-turner, probably a good one to pass the time on an airline trip. A young guy finds a drug stash (and right away you wonder who may have seen him take it!) and is then pursued by an assortment of mean people, especially one killer psychotic . Yes, there is lots of killing but keep reading to find out if the hero makes off successfully with the money. If you are a Cormac McCarthy fan, this is one of his most exciting - and soon to be made into a movie.

5 out of 5 stars An Expert With Minimalism.......2007-09-22

This was my first book by Cormac McCarthy, and I must admit he has won a reader for life.

No Country For Old Men explodes with subtly and simplicity as it offers us Moss, a man who finds a drug deal gone bad in the middle of nowhere along the Mexican border. Dead bodies are everywhere, and when he finds a case full of millions of dollars, he can't help himself. As you can imagine, there are numerable parties who'd like that money back. And so the hunt for Moss begins.

Dialogue is terse, details are sparing, yet the story is absolutely riveting and I could not put it down. For some McCarthy's violence and unapologetic disregard for his characters' safety may be upsetting, but I loved his dedication to giving us the story as it could only unfold.

We tend to shower accolades upon authors who give us specific descriptions on every conceivable object within a story. I personally found McCarthy's expertise with minimalism refreshing and quite admirable.

I completely recommend you read No Country For Old Men.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible book.......2007-09-21

First book I've *ever* read where I skimmed the last 3 pages because I was completely uninterested and just wanted to get the darn thing over with. The book just kept getting worse and worse.

I agree with the previous review saying the book is terrible and doesn't conform to the way stories are told.

First annoyance-- dialog that is not in quotation marks. Why would you not conform to that basic standard of writing? What's next? Starting the story on the last page and reading from right-to-left?

Story fizzled out.

Waste of time. Especially compared to the book I had finished prior to this one: Lonesome Dove-- a true masterpiece from an author who knows how to tell a story.

Book Description

Walt Longmire returns for his third adventure but this time he is in the City of Brotherly Love, where no act of kindness goes unpunished

Walt has been the sheriff in Wyoming's Absaroka County for twenty-four years, where his wit and charm have helped him solve many crimes. But that can't prepare him for the savage attack on his daughter, Cady, a Philadelphia lawyer who has unwittingly become embroiled in a political cover-up. As Walt and his best friend, Henry Standing Bear, scour the city for clues, he gets help from his deputy Victoria Moretti and her family of Philly police. But Longmire wasn't born yesterday. He's willing to pull out all the stops to find Cady's attacker and show the big city that this old-timer has a few moves left in his saddlebag of tricks. Those who enjoy Tony Hillerman and James Lee Burke will delight in Johnson's newest Sheriff Longmire adventure.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What Would You Do To Protect Your Daughter?.......2007-06-21

Craig Johnson's third entry in the Walt Longmire series takes us to Philly, where Walt and Henry are visiting Walt's daughter while Henry shows off his historical photo collection. But then Walt's daughter is found comatose, her skull fractured, and a body is thrown from a Philly bridge. Someone is following Walt, then tries to kill him. Moretti flies out to... uh... take care of him. Oh boy, hang on to your hat and your gun. This one's gonna be a bumpy ride.

Craig Johnson has a knack for description and for telling a story. I could use a bit less of the Indian mysticism, but IMHO he's the best new talent to come on the scene in the last few years. Keep 'em coming, Craig.

5 out of 5 stars Another great title from Craig Johnson.......2007-05-28

I'm really depressed.

First, I just finished Craig Johnson's newest book, KINDNESS GOES UNPUNISHED. Now I have to wait at least a year for another book in this wonderful series.

Second, I found the writing in this book so great that I despair being able to write anything half so good.

I loved THE COLD DISH and DEATH WITHOUT COMPANY, but I took all the Wyoming atmosphere for granted. I've never been there, so I just assumed Johnson got it right. But I grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and went to college in the city, so I can tell you that the Philly locations and characters in KINDNESS are perfectly observed. It's impressive that an author can describe two such different places so superbly.

Most of the characters I've loved in the first two books are back in the second-- Henry Standing Bear, deputy Victoria Moretti, daughter Cady and even the faithful Dog. But they are joined by a host of Philadelphia folks, including Vic's family. The plot is moving and ultimately satisfying, as Walt, in his ever-present cowboy hat, dispense some western-style justice. If you haven't discovered Johnson's books yet, you're in for a real treat. If you enjoyed the first two books, I'm sure you'll find this new one equal or better.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book in a great series........2007-05-07

First Sentence: "I didn't wear my gun."

Wyoming Sheriff Walt Longmire joins his friend Henry Standing Bear on a trip to Philadelphia for Henry's photographic exhibit at the museum and for Walt to visit his daughter, Cady, and meet her boyfriend. Cady is attacked and near death and the boyfriend's wealthy parents are giving him an alibi. Cady's boyfriend is tossed off a bridge in what can't possibly be a suicide and Walt is going to find out what is going on.

Okay, so it starts with one very big coincidence, but who cares. There are wonderful characters; Walt, Henry, Myra the dispatcher, Dog the...dog, and the entire Moretti family; great dialogue; excellent sense of place both Wyoming and the fun of experiencing Philadelphia with Walt and Henry. Add in some flirtation, a dash of sex, the emotion of Walt fearing for his daughter's survival, some Indian mysticism, and the action of tracking down the bad guys and there is one really good book. This is a great series. If you've not tried it yet, start at the beginning and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by an Underrated Writer.......2007-05-03

I love Johnson's series. I love his characters: Sheriff Walt Longmire; his best friend, Henry Standing Bear; his tart-tongued deputy, Victoria Moretti; and I love the Wyoming setting. That said, this third book in the series moves events largely to the city of Philadelphia, where Walt's beloved daughter, Cady, is a lawyer, and where Victoria and her rather large extended family of cops is from. Sometimes I'm not too happy when a series I read largely for descriptions of the setting takes such a chance, but Johnson pulls it off here. His descriptions of Philadelphia allow us to see the city through an inexperienced visitor, Walt, and make it both a welcoming and a threatening place.

When Cady is assaulted and put into a coma, Walt divides his time between waiting at her bedside and conducting his own investigation into what might have happened. This is a good book with the vivid characters and their relationships at center stage. Still, I can't help but hope things will be moving back West for further books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars "Kindness Goes Unpunished" by Craig Johnson.......2007-05-01

Having 'signed on' at the beginning of this wild adventure, with "The Cold Dish", and then hitching a ride on "Death Without Company", I can honestly say that I thought this 3rd installment in the Walt Longmire series was the BEST yet! Even though the story takes place in Philly, rather than Johnson's usual setting of Absaroka County, Wyoming, I did not feel that his fine cast of characters lost anything due to the transition ~ if anything, I felt that the change of venue lent an added sense of strength to the characters, without the breath-taking scenery or small-town politics stealing any of their thunder. The fact that Sheriff Longmire and his deputy, Victoria, finally took a big 'first step' in their long-running but seemingly nonexistent relationship was a big plus for me, since I had been "rooting" for them since the beginning! I liked the way that Walt was kind of attracted to Lena (Vic's mother)also, and how he could look at the mother and see the daughter, and vice versa. This development added an extra dimension to the story; an extra 'layer to the fabric' of the tale being woven. I can't wait for the next installment in this excellent series to become available ~ superb craftsmanship by a great new author!!

Book Description

SHERIFF BO TULLY OF BLIGHT COUNTY, IDAHO, IS BACK.

When the call comes in that Mike Wilson, the unlikable owner of West Branch Lodge, has gone missing, Sheriff Tully is delighted. This is an excellent opportunity for Tully, his tracker pal Dave, and his retired sheriff father, Pap, to enjoy a few evenings of hot tubs and single-malt scotch at the luxurious lodge while working the case. However, visions of R & R vanish in a flash on the drive up, when Tully and Pap suddenly realize an avalanche is thundering down the mountain, straight toward them.

Tully manages to outrun the crush of snow, but the road behind is blocked, and there's no telling for how long. Tully's stranded at the lodge with a motley group of vacationers and locals: a sassy co-ed, a group of rambunctious fraternity boys, a shadowy group of what looks like ex-cons, the missing owner's wife, a suspiciously good-looking bartender, and worst (or perhaps best) of all, Tully's old flame, who shows up with her dogsled and naughty intentions.

Both vacationers and locals start to look like suspects when Tully discovers startling evidence proving that the avalanche was no accident of nature. But why would anybody want him dead? And then the missing persons case turns into a murder case when Mike Wilson's body turns up in the river a couple of days later. But who killed him, and how? Furthermore, when another murder in Blight City is reported that week, the only suspect who makes sense...is the dead guy, Mike Wilson. But how could that have happened? It's up to Tully to figure it all out in this comic romp through the wilds of Blight County, from bestselling author Patrick McManus.

This book is written in the truly superb style that only McManus has. What can any review add to the writings of Patrick F. McManus? Why would anyone need convincing that they should own the entire Patrick F. McManus library!?! Try it...you'll laugh your posterior off!

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2007-09-05

First Sentence: He stood at window studiously watching the large fluffy snowflakes fill up his mother's backyard.

Sheriff Bo Tully and his father, Pap, head to West Branch Lodge to investigate the disappearance of lodge owner Mike Wilson. They barely escape being caught in an avalanche but are now cut off and must proceed with their investigation, now of a murder.

While I very much enjoyed the first book in this series, this entry left me, pardon the expression, cold. Even the character of Tully came across as unpleasant and the dialogue felt awkward. There was an appalling grammatical error that may have been done for humor, but it didn't come across that way. The setting of being cut off by an avalanche was interesting, but didn't really add any suspense as the weather never posed a particular threat to the characters. In fact, I found very little suspense in the story. I wasn't surprised by the killer, but was by the motive and I did enjoy the very ending. However, I'm not certain that was enough for me to continue which this series.

Book Description

Juggling a family and a career is never easy—and it's becoming a real challenge for Sheriff Joanna Brady. Coping with the impending delivery of her second child as well as a staff shortage, the last things Joanna needs are two serious crimes.

First, the body of an unidentified man is found in the desert, all of his fingers savagely severed. Following the scant clues, Joanna learns that the victim was an ex-con who had served twenty years in prison after confessing to the murder of his pregnant wife. During his last days he was seen following and photographing a young woman.

Then one of Joanna's officers is brutally attacked and left for dead while on an unau-thorized stakeout. Because the officer is one of its own, the department throws its resources into finding her attacker.

But the murder haunts Joanna. Being a sher-iff is no longer an empty position she wants to hold—somehow it has become what she is. Her job is to avenge man's inhumanity toward man, and finding out who the victim was and why he is dead is what she has been summoned to do with her life. Strapping on a bulletproof vest, she'll risk everything to see that justice is done.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Nothing much explained........2007-08-27

What happened? An innocent man is railroaded by an inept police department and an uncaring judge, our pregnant lady sheriff is totally lacking in backbone as she takes much guff from a deputy, her mother, her mother-in-law and her teenage daughter, there is way too much left hanging, less about the in laws and the dogs and more about how the bad guy managed to do all that he did or was it someone else?

5 out of 5 stars Dead Wrong was Dead Right! Strong Female Character!!.......2007-08-23

I rate a book highly if when the book ends, I wish that it would continue. Dead Wrong left me with this feeling. It was very supportive to women being able to do anything even 8 3/4 month pregnant!! I enjoyed it very much.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyed.......2007-08-09

I really enjoy the Joanna Brady series and try to read them all. This one did not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars My first book by her and not my last.......2007-07-29

This is the first book PERIOD that I have read by J.A. Jance and I was not disappointed. I will definitely read some of her other novels. She seems to be a good writer who releases subtle social messages while telling a story. Many of the social messages I don't agree with and some I do...either way, it makes one ponder more than just the plot.

4 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read my first novel in her series.......2007-07-19

I grabbed this one at the airport on a flight out and had it done by the time I landed. A fast read that was entertaining. I actually appreciated the side character of Joanna's husband. His quick wit kept a lightness to a book that covers many darker areas. From the possibly wrongly convicted, to hidden relationships, illegal dog fighting rings and long family history, it was a good mix.

Keep your eyes open or a chart to keep up with all the characters. She has many names being thrown around tying the story together and I flipped back a couple times to make sure I had them straight.

I look forward to picking up another one soon from this author no matter if it is in the series or not.

I have been a fan of Mr. McManus' short stories for years. It turns out that his talent is endless! In this full length novel we are introduced to Bo Tulley, Pap, and a pet spider! This is a great escape read! I was a bit worried that if Mr. McManus switched from humor to mystery writing that I may be disappointed by the serious approach. I need not have worried. This is a well told story by a writer who can handle any genre!

Great work Mr. McManus!!!

Meet Sheriff Bo Tully, a stickler for the law. Of course, he'd rather give someone a right than read them their rights, snoop rather that bother with niceties like bothersome search warrents, and with real bad guys, he's just libel to shoot first! But the Scraggs never were no account and now Batim, patriach of the clan, has a dead man on his ranch. Not unusual, but Batim says they didn't kill the guy. Somehow, Tully believes him. So begins the solving of the mystery, but in Blightmore County, you do things the Blight Way... Quoth the Raven...

Bantim Scragg's and his sons are not known as law-abiding citizens so when a call comes in that they are reporting a body on their fence, it gets Tully's attention. When more victims are found, clearly not locals, the crime takes on a different focus.

Patrick F. McManus is a well-known author of humorous outdoor adventures and a columnist. To his repertory, he now adds mystery writer. This is a delightful book in a different setting and interesting police work. Blight is a very small Idaho town where everyone knows everyone and the weather is an element not to be ignored. All the characters are wonderful, particularly Bo and his father, whom everyone calls "Pap." There is gentle humor, a good mystery and an unexpected ending. I liked that the mystery included both locals and outsiders. I've not read McManus before, but I shall look forward to reading him again.

5 out of 5 stars McManus can write anything.......2007-04-03

I got hooked on Patrick McManus way back with "Never sniff a gift fish", and I now own them all, but I was concerned that a murder mystery might not appeal to me like his other works. Boy was I wrong! Same comical style, some new characters, and the sheriff is really ole Patrick McManus himself, just like the older books he wrote. I can't wait for the next one to get to my home, and it is being shipped now. If you liked his work before, you'll love his new books.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Patrick McManus Book.......2007-03-15

This book is great, as are all the other books written by Patrick McManus. One reason I think his books are so good is because I have had the same, or very similar, things happen to me in the great outdoors.

This book is more of a mystery. It combines humor with mystery for a great story. I only wish McManus' books were more frequent.

Book Description

Completely revised and updated, this new edition of the popular and highly regarded textbook, Applied Geophysics, describes the physical methods involved in exploration for hydrocarbons and minerals. These tools include gravity, magnetic, seismic, electrical, electromagnetic, and radioactivity studies. All aspects of these methods are described, including theoretical considerations, data acquisition, and data processing and interpretation, with the objective of locating concentrations of natural resources and defining their extent. In the past fourteen years or so since the writing of Applied Geophysics, there have been many changes in the field of exploration geophysics. The authors give full treatment to changes in this field, which include improved techniques for calculating gravity fields, the use of proton-precession and optically-pumped magnetometers, improved quality of seismic data, magnetotelluric as a practical exploration method, new electromagnetic exploration methods, the use of gamma-ray spectrometers in radioactive exploration, and improved well-logging techniques. The intent is to be practical, and thus many actual examples and problems are given. Moreover, wherever possible in this edition the authors adopt the use of Système Internationale (SI) units, which were not in standared use at the time of the first edition. The reader needs only a general background knowledge of geology, physics, and mathematics. Most of the math can be skipped by those interested only in the results. Advanced mathematical concepts are explained in the appendix.

I first came across Telford during my Postgraduate days in Nigeria. It's has been my second bible ever since. It's a classical book in Applied Geophysics. It has no rival. I would encourage geophysicists world-wide to have a second look at the book, especially, professionals, postgraduate and undergraduate students. It's complete with modern references in Applied Geophysics.

Book Description

The #1 New York Times bestseller returns with a completely new setting-the magnificent natural beauty of Sun Valley, Idaho-and a heart-stopping story in which a local sheriff struggles to protect a controversial politician from the elegant plan of a hired assassin.

Eight years ago, in Sun Valley-snowcapped playground for the wealthy and ambitious-all that stood between U.S. Attorney General Elizabeth Shaler and a knife-wielding killer was local patrolman Walt Fleming. Now Liz Shaler returns to Sun Valley as the keynote speaker of billionaire Patrick Cutter's world-famous media and communications conference, a convergence of the richest, most powerful business tycoons. The controversial attorney general is expected to announce her candidacy for president. It's a media coup for Cutter-but a security nightmare for Walt Fleming, now the county sheriff.

As the Cutter conference gets under way, authorities learn of a confirmed threat on Shaler's life, and various competing interests-the Secret Service, the FBI, Cutter's own security forces -begin jockeying for jurisdiction. Amid the conference's opulent extravagances, Walt is suddenly shaken by an apparent murder, his nephew's arrest, and a haunting legacy from his family's past. The clock ticks down toward Shaler's keynote address as we track the chilling precision of her assassin's preparations.

2 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying.......2007-08-18

Ridley Pearson's a fine writer, but I was somewhat disappointed with KILLER WEEKEND. This novel is written like a James Patterson novel, with lean writing, very short chapters and a relatively fast pace.

Unfortunately, like a Patterson book, the characterization in this book is very thin, verging on cardboard in many cases. There is a large cast of characters in this rather short book, and most of them struck me as underdeveloped. Only the main sheriff character really has a three dimensional personality. And even in the sheriff's case, much of his back story is left unexplained, although Pearson will presumably reveal more about him in later books in the series.

KILLER WEEKEND is also kind of slow to get going. This is not really a thriller, but more of a whodunit. The first two thirds of this book is mainly a setup for the events of the last third. I didn't find this novel particularly exciting or involving until maybe the last hundred pages or so.

In short, this novel is easy to read, but not particularly compelling. I think there are far better choices out there for your reading time. Still, if you like James Patterson's writing style, you may want to give KILLER WEEKEND a try.

with enough left over plot to continue with these new characters. A good author makes it look easy. The pages fly by. Enjoy the trip.

3 out of 5 stars Is this the beginning of the end?.......2007-07-27

Lou Bolt! Daphne? Where are you? Rather, where is the great character development and the understated intrigue that comes up and slams you from Ridley Pearson? I like Sun Valley, too. I like the sexy waitresses and great food in the SawTooth, and the hanging canoe, and the shellacked table in the Pioneer. But describing these and all the other places Ridley knows and loves in Sun Valley is not literary genius. It is contrived and boring. Come on Ridley! Give us some of the old razzamatazz!!!

5 out of 5 stars Good History and a Good Read!.......2006-12-14

Highly recommended--I thought I would just skim through this book but I read it cover to cover. Boessenecker has a good, clean style that doesn't get in the way of the story, and an almost obsessive interest in his subject, as demonstrated by the obscure newspaper items and other sources he has tracked down and by the fact that he owns many of Morse's personal items that are photographed for illustration. Boessenecker had a great resource in the accounts Morse left of some of his gunfights and adventures, which provide the best blow-by-blow detail I've ever seen in a book about this period. Interwoven into the story is contextual detail about California history, geography, and social conditions, testifying to Boessenecker's expertise on this subject. This is one of the best books of Western history I've ever read. It provided me with a lot of insight into the life of the 19th century lawman.

BTW, I noticed that "Reviewer from New Mexico" gave this book a good review but only one star--that was clearly a mistake.

5 out of 5 stars Review from Wild West magazine.......1999-09-19

In telling Morse's fascinating story, Boessenecker, a San Francisco-based attorney, often allows Morse to do the telling. (Yes, Harry was far more prolific with a pen than either Wyatt or Wild Bill). You'll also find plenty of solid insight into California's battle for law and order after the gold rush. . . . From now on, when someone sings of a lawman being "brave, courageous and bold," it just might make sense to think of Harry instead of Wyatt. Wild West Magazine, August 1999.

1 out of 5 stars Review from New Mexico Historical Review.......1999-09-19

This work by an eminent writer on old-time outlaws and lawmen can be viewed from several vantage points: the storied career of Harry Morse, the ins and outs of law enforcement in the Old West, and the interplay between Hispanics and Anglos in Old California. Boessenecker describes Morse as a "gunfighter, manhunter, and sleuth whose career is without parallel in the history of the American frontier." More importantly, the author, like other western historians in recent years, shows the difference between the blood and thunder school of thought about Old West gunfighting lawmen who occasionally pinned on a silver star, and those individuals who saw law enforcement in the American West as a profession. As a career minded peace officer, Morse spent decades learning the techniques needed to investigate crimes and to track and capture outlaws and desperadoes. New Mexico Historical Review, April 1999.

4 out of 5 stars A STORY OF AN UNSUNG HERO OF THE OLD WEST.......1998-11-12

HARRY MORSE WAS A HERO FORGOTTEN . HIS BRAVERY, TENACITY AND COURAGE FAR OUT SHINES THE OTHER MORE POPULAR WESTERN HEROES LIKE THE EARPS. HIS GUNFIGHT WITH JUAN SOTO IS EDGE OF THE SEAT EXCITEMENT AND HIS TALES OF ORDINARY DAY TO DAY LIFE IN OLD CALIFORNIA GIVES AN INSIGHT TO OUR HISTORY..GREAT READING.

Book Description

Nazareth, Texas Deputy Sheriff Jim Doe plunges into a renegade manhunt after the town's sheriff is gunned down. But unbeknownst to him, the suspect-an American Indian-holds chilling connections to the disappearance of Doe's sister years before. And the closer Doe gets to the fugitive's trail, the more he realizes that his own involvement in the case is hardly coincidental. A descendant of the Blackfeet Nation himself, Doe keeps getting mistaken for the killer he's chasing. And when the FBI's finest three profilers descend on the case, Doe suspects the hunt has only just begun. But beneath the novel's pyrotechnic plotting, the deeper psychic cadences of Stephen Graham Jones's prose take hold. His specific imagery and telling detail coalesce into the literary equivalent of an Edward Hopper painting. But like the other seminal works in the genre (Fight Club, Red Dragon), All The Beautiful Sinners will unnerve you, and it will then send you back to page one to experience its mysteries all over again.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Terrifying and Terribly Good.......2007-09-04

I'll admit, I picked up this book because I once heard its author say, "Why couldn't Joyce have written about something intrinsically interesting, like werewolves?" But "All the Beautiful Sinners" far and away exceeded my expectations.

The novel feels like Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" and its progenitor, "Deathbird Stories" by Harlan Ellison, sharing drinks with Hamlin Garland's "Main-Traveled Roads." There's a fantastical element to the book, though no magic as such enters the story. But this fantasy is combined with a terrifying visceral quality, as well as a clear-eyed view of the American Midwest.

The story centers on Jim Doe and his pursuit of hideous serial killer The Tin Man (though this name is not given to him until something like halfway through), as well as the parallel efforts of three FBI agents. The agents and Jim Doe seem superficially to work together, but in many ways they are working separately and, it sometimes seems, against each other.

But the plot, for all its visceral nature, comes almost second to Jones' grasp of style and symbolism. In Jones' hands, what could seem to be almost cliché characters (the FBI agents, in particular, would have been easy to mess up) are interesting and lively. The narrative is truthful and almost never stilted, and Jones uses symbolism delicately, but without an overabundance of subtlety (and yes, there is such a thing). His use of flocks of birds and storms as symbols is powerful and evocative, as is his depiction of the Midwest.

This is definitely a book I would recommend, though if you have a low tolerance for grisly, nigh-ghastly crime, perhaps it should be avoided -- The Tin Man's preferred method is truly disturbing. However, for those with strong stomachs and a little time, this is most certainly a book worth reading.

1 out of 5 stars An Utterly Confusing Pile of Words.......2006-09-22

I have to says ATBS, at the core has a decent story, that's the only thing that kept me reading this confusing, and often annoying novel. I see the positive reviews posted here, and I just don't get it? If this is a "thinking man's thriller", or if you have to go back and read it from the beginning once you are a quarter of the way through it, just to understand the novel, like one reviewer claims, then what's the point? Through the course of the novel we are introduced to 8-10 key characters, only 3 of which have any depth or backstory. We are introduced to a small town deputy who goes chasing after a serial killer who follows tornado activity, our protagonist I guess? But after about 1/3 of the novel, the deputy is relegated to a secondary role, and a young FBI agent becomes the central character, I think? Even the serial killer, who should be a menacing figure, gets watered down with a twist the novel takes 1/2 way through? Of course nothing is as it appears is what Jones is trying to tell us I guess, but the lack of consistancy when it comes to characters is headache inducing when trying to figure out who is doing what and why. We aren't given any reason to care about anyone in this novel, it's almost impossible to make an emotional investment in any of the characters as they are so weakly drawn. The dialog is choppy and hard to follow, and the dreamlike, train of thought narrative style doesn't help. I really do wish an editor had gotten ahold of this book, trimmed it down to 300 pages, and crafted a James Lee Burke or "Silence of the Lambs" like thriller from the nugget buried in the middle of this mess. I don't recommend this novel to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book.......2006-05-18

Stephen Graham Jones's All the Beautiful Sinners is a spectacular thriller written with an elegant prose style and told with sharp, cinematic imagery. Its characters, often complex and kinetic, inhabit a harsh, unforgiving America-a place where serial killers are gods and children do their bidding.

This is not a book for the squeamish, nor for the lazy. It is an intelligent read. Characters talk like real people, react to their surroundings like real people would react, but live in an extraordinary environment. It is not a difficult book, but the reader must pay attention, as readers should for any book.

If you enjoy thoughtful writing, read it. You will inhabit its landscape, will walk (and sometimes run, sometimes cradling broken appendages) with its characters, and will come to love even the darkest edges of its menacing reality.

I highly recommend All the Beautiful Sinners to anyone who loves good writing.

4 out of 5 stars Pay Attention.......2004-11-29

This book forces you to pay attention to what's going on--because a lot is happening--or else you'll be forced to come back and read it again. This is a very engaging tale about perhaps the most in-depth villain I've ever read about, a young Indian Sheriff who's been searching for his sister for years, and a couple FBI agents thrown into the mix. The book is so thought-out and so involved you can't help but admire Stephen Graham Jones' abilities here. His prose is beautiful and a hell of a lot better than hacks like Anne Rice. I wish I could fully encompass what a great book this is here, but unfortunately my skills are very limited. I cannot hope to do this work justice...you'll just have to read it for yourself.
