Book Description

Irish immigrant Molly Murphy is contemplating giving up PI work for something a little less…exciting. Molly has had quite enough excitement recently, thank you very much. Especially from the handsome but deceptive NYPD captain Daniel Sullivan. She wants him out of her life for good. But when Daniel is accused of accepting bribes and lands himself in the Tombs, the notorious city jail, he begs Molly to help prove he was framed. After everything they’ve been through together, how can she turn him down? As Molly finds herself drawn further into Daniel’s case, Molly begins to fear that his trouble is related to one of his investigations: catching a serial killer who is targeting prostitutes, known to the locals as the East Side Ripper….

5 out of 5 stars Rhys has hooked me again.......2007-08-26

I had never been a reader of mystery books until I encountered the first Molly Murphy novel. My fascination with Victorian New York and Ireland made the book appeal to me, and Rhys Bowen's wonderful writing style has kept me reading each book since the first one. I enjoyed Oh Danny Boy every bit as much as the others in the series.

Bowen continues to impress with her wonderful depictions of turn of the century New York City, really making the period and city come alive. The plot drew me along and kept me guessing, and the characters are as endearing as ever. Even though I could guess the choices Molly would make, I still worried about her as I read the book. And though one resolution to her story in this book could be described as an easy out, it was actually what I thought to be the most logical choice, given Molly's rather hectic and often dangerous life. I also loved to see Molly's interactions with Sid, Gus, and Ryan, and am still hooked by Daniel and Molly's relationship. (In fact, flawed character though he is, I think I've developed something of a crush on Daniel Sullivan.)

After this one, I can't wait to see what Bowen has in store for her characters in the future, and I hope to see much more of Molly. But then, that's what I think after every Rhys Bowen book.

3 out of 5 stars Murphy detective series.......2007-08-09

Enjoyed the first book of the series very much - 4 stars, but as the series progressed, so did the swearing. If I want to hear those words, I can go to my local jr. high. I didn't read the 4th book or beyond.

5 out of 5 stars An avid reader.......2006-07-04

Again Rhys Bowen has written an intriguing and well plotted gaslight mystery. Besides the suspenseful plot, Bowen keeps us up to date on Molly's personal life. This episode was an especially good one. I look forward to the next book in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Molly to the rescue.......2006-06-18

Daniel is seen by the new police commissioner accepting a bribe, but things are not always what they appear. Was it a set-up? Molly needs to prove Daniel's innocence. Get comfortable, you are in for another ride with Molly and other reoccurring characters, Arabella Norton, gang leader, Monk Eastman, friends and neighbors , Sid and Gus.
We are introduced to real historical characters, police commissioner John Partridge and Sabella Goodwin, who was hired to be a police matron, and later became a full detective.
Another good read by Rhys Bowen. I'm looking forward to another Molly Murphy novel.

4 out of 5 stars A joyful continuation of the Molly you've learned to love.......2006-05-09

Molly Murphy has been one of the most delightful on-going characters of today's mystery genre. Her turn of the last century knowledge and latitude is restrictive by our standards but aggressive and imaginative by hers. This book wasn't quite up to par with the earlier Molly Murhpy books, but wouldn't part with the experience of the read for any other of its kind.
Molly, like Maisie Dobbs of the same era - seem to bring a sense of daring and challenge and yes, even the mis-judgements to the character. She comes to life as the pages unfold, until at the last, you are left wanting more. Please Rhys Bowen, keep Molly in your creative soul, for a long time to come.

5 out of 5 stars A Bear and His Boy.......2007-04-16

I first bought "A Girl and Her Gator" because the girl in the book is Claire, which is my granddaughter's name. When I found out it was second in a series, I purchased the first book, "A Boy and His Bunny," and have now purchased the third book, "A Bear and His Boy." My granddaughter loves these books. She has her mom read them in order each night. They are very humerous and the illustrations are wonderful. Each book ends with an idea of what is next to come. We can't wait for the next book to come out!

First-hand accounts that include diary entries and personal letters describe the experiences of boys, sixteen years old or younger, who fought in the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The boys war.......2006-11-28

With the many boys who fought in the civil war most of them lied about their age. A lot of them wrote letters or had a diary. Johnny Clem had run away from his home at 11. At age 12 he tried to enlist but they refused to let him join because he was clearly too young. The next day he came back to join as a drummer boy. "I was not happy to trade a musket for a stick". He got his wish in the battle of Shiloh and he became a soldier. I recommend this book to people who want like war and/or personal stories. I liked it. I hope you will to.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STARTER WORK FOR THE YOUNG READER.......2006-01-20

Jim Murphy has given us a wonderful account of the Civil War with emphasis on the role the young soldier (teen and pre-teen) played in that conflict. The text is quite understandable and the illustrations, black and white photo of the Civil War, make this a valuable and interesting tool in sparking an interest in the young reader. The author uses many first hand accounts and has done a very good job with his research. The writing is not of the dry variety and seems to be able to hold the youner readers interest while still filling his or her head with many interesting and important facts. Highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2003-03-06

This book is very good & understandable. I like it mainly for the pictures.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful intro to young soldiers lives in the Civil War.......1999-01-07

Read this aloud with my children about 2 years ago. It sparked my son's interest in Civil War historical fiction. He is not an avid reader, but has read several civil war books including "Red Cap" by Clifton Wisler and just picked up "Across Five Aprils" for his sixth-grade historical fiction assignment. Jim Murphy is a fine writer, weaving quotes, diary entries and anecdotes into a lucent and revealing account of the lives of youths who participated in the Civil War. A fine book!

Book Description

His name was Kevin but his keepers called him Zoo Boy.  He didn't talk. He hid under tables and surrounded himself with a cage of chairs. He hadn't been out of the building in the four years since he'd come in. He was afraid of water and wouldn't take a shower.  He was afraid to be naked, to change his clothes.  He was nearly 16.

Desperate to see change in the boy, the staff of Kevin's adolescent treatment center hired Hayden. As Hayden read to him and encouraged him to read, crawling down into his cage of chairs with him, Kevin talked. Then he started to draw and paint and showed himself to have a quick wit and a rolling, seething, murderous hatred for his stepfather.

4 out of 5 stars quite a good read.......2006-08-31

In my opinion Torey have written better books, but none the less it wos still a good read, a must for all Torey Hayden fans!

4 out of 5 stars Kevin..a true miracle!!!.......2006-05-12

Kevin Richter is a 15 year old boy who has spent the last 8 years of his life in silence. Everyone thinks he is a hopeless case. Everyone, except Torey Hayden. A wonderful woman with expertise in elective mutism. Hayden works miracles with 15 year old Kevin and discovers his past, a horror story no one will forget! This book takes you through Kevin's life, his past and present. When all else fails and no one believes Kevin can turn his life around, Torey comes through once again. So sit back and relax with this book, and let it take you to a past unforgettable.

4 out of 5 stars will make you angry.......2006-02-01

Teacher Torey Hayden takes an unusual case, a fifteen year old boy named Kevin who doesn't speak, or is "electively mute." With Torey's help, Kevin begins to speak again. His progress at the hospital, however, is erratic because of horrifying circumstances that brought him into custodial care. His sister was beaten to death by their alcoholic father, and the father also physically abused Kevin, and urged his sisters to abuse him sexually as well.

As one might expect, the road to recovery is not smooth at all. Kevin is given several placements with foster parents and other caretakers which do not work out. However, with Torey's aid, Kevin begins taking small steps toward becoming independent. In the end, he goes to high school and survives the academic and social challenges. He also finds a group home that caters to mentally disabled adults and does well there. An inspiring story.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2005-11-23

The first part of this book seemed very slow to me. I didn't want to keep reading it at first. I'm sure in reality, that mimics Hayden's feelings about working with Kevin, but it's not the best way to entice readers.

About halfway through the book, however, it really stepped up and became interesting. Once some of Kevin's background was revealed and there was more action from him in the story, I didn't want to put the book down.

I would encourage people who enjoy abuse or therapy type books to read this story; just remember to hang in there if the first part seems slow. I do believe this is a much better book than A Child Called It, which I have also recently read.

4 out of 5 stars Great Read!.......2005-08-26

I've read most of Torey Hayden's books and this one and "Ghost Girl" are my very favorite. I couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Kevin is a hero.
Ms. Hayden has truly touched my heart. To realize that one person can make such a difference in the lives of others inspires me to do more with my life. I wish there were more talented education/social service professionals out there that would document their amazing life experiences. What a shame that most stories go untold.

5 out of 5 stars Oui Oui - This book is great!.......2007-07-03

This book is fantastic. My son loves it! We borrowed it from the library 4 times in a row so I finally came online to buy it for him. He walks around my house saying Oui Oui French can be said....

It's a must read every night before bed.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary!.......2005-05-04

My wife and I just finished reading this piece to our 5 and 3 year olds. All were in agreement that it was a fine selection for an evening's recitation. However, when we delved deeper, and happily peeled our way through the book's many layers, there was much spirited discussion!

On the surface, this is the story of the mysterious and improbable appearance of a specimen from the Leporidae family atop a slumbering child. (They do not go into the precise Taxonomy of the "bunny", and the whimsical illustration style makes accurate identification difficult. However, in an equally spirited aside, we narrowed the possibilities to S. floridanus, the "Eastern Cottontail", or L. corsicanus, the "Corsican Hare".)

The real fun, however, begins when we explore the possible underlying meanings of the rabbit (or hare.) Is the beast Freud's "id", as my daughter hypothesized? Certainly not "Ego", we were all in agreement. We also similarly balked, collectively, at the idea that the bunny holds a veiled Judaio-Christian agenda. This piece seems above such denominational jockeying. My son, 5, made a strong case for the bunny as representation of the child's "hopping" upward within Kohlberg's "Stages of Moral Development", from the Pre-conventional Level of "Self Focused Morality" to the Conventional Level of "Other Focused Morality" That often marks the transition to adolescence. Ahh, the mind of a child!...

We had only gotten this far when it was time for brushing teeth, and for our nightly "Find-the-Constellation" game. But the mere thought of a second, more detailed study of this book around the hearth this evening makes me aflutter with anticipation!

Highly, highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for kids, thought provoking for parents.......2005-05-03

On the face, this book is a wonderful, adventurous story about a boy with a bunny on his head. My 6 year-old daughter loves the wonderful places they visit, especially the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. My son, 3, simply loves the silliness of it all, right from the opening line, "Once upon a time, a boy woke up with a bunny on his head." The book is more than worth the purchase price if for this alone.

But the true genius behind this seemingly benign children's book is the brilliant parallel sub structure. It is truly one of the finest allegories of our time.

From simple deduction and from using the first and third letters in each word and rearranging them, we learn that the boy represents our inner child while the rabbit symbolizes Guttenberg and the importance of the printed word.

Everything is here: the complex equilibrium of pre-civil rights race relations; the conflict between Yankee capitalism and Southern agrarian values; a meditation on time, consciousness, and Western philosophy. And all of it is rendered in prose so gorgeous it can take your breath away, once you get past the abrupt, unannounced time shifts.

This is a truly remarkable first novel from this talented duo.

5 out of 5 stars Bunny phobe? Yes. Boy/Bunny book lover? Also yes........2005-04-30

My two year old daughter recently received this book as a gift from her grandparents. As she had been dropping not-so-subtle hints for disbursements of candy, chocolate or potato chips over the last several months, she was less than thrilled. To say she was angry, would be to put it mildly. To say she threatened to run away to live with the Care Bears would be an out and out lie, as she said nothing of the sort. But, really, you could see it in her eyes.

Her attitude, however, quickly changed after we opened the book (and, I'm admitting somewhat reluctantly here, some Taffy). She was fascinated by the simple, almost sophmoric, art direction, the equally simple, almost yo-yoey, word play. Taken seperately, the reader would be left wishing for more. Together, they are powerful, mesmerizing relationship, like Bogie and Bacall, Brad and Jennnifer, Jay Leno and his wife, whatshername.

This is a wonderful, fascinating tale that is best appreciated through the eyes of a child. Our daughter remains as rapt today as she was eight days ago when she first received this wonderful tome. For a child fueled almost exclusively by sugar, aspartame, sucrose, high fructose corn sryup and pudding, this is saying something.

Bravo to the authors. Would I be lying if I said I wanted to see a sequeal? No. I wouldn't. Would I be lying if I said I didn't sneak some of that Taffy from my daughter? Yes, yes, I would.

5 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite book!.......2005-04-30

My daughter received this book as an Easter present and it has quickly become her favorite book! The story is sweet and creative and the illustrations are fun and amusing! The book's simple premise of "You can do anything...with a bunny on your head!" takes us all on a journey of imagination and adventure. From riding on mopeds to exploring seabeds, this is a terrific book for young and old. We've now made a family game of coming up with new ideas of what we'd all do if "Fred" were on our head...Highly recommend it!!! It's my Mother's Day present to all my friends with young children!

    Book Description

Single mother Maggie Carroll longs to go to Ireland, but two young daughters and financial troubles take precedence until she enters a contest on the internet that leads her closer to her dreams than she ever imagined. Irishman Galen Devlin, working the tourism trade in post-9/11 New York City, is a lonely bachelor longing for love. Both have a distant shared past that includes Thomas Terrance O'Toole, a modern-day leprechaun with matchmaking on his mind. The Irish ballad “Danny Boy” often brings tears to the eyes of those longing for home. Join Maggie and Galen in The Pipes Are Calling, as they share a homeward journey that includes the true saga of the Molly Maguires, a 19th-century group of impoverished Irish immigrants struggling for labor rights against the rough backdrop of the Pennsylvania hard coal industry. And listen…the bittersweet strains of the pipes may be calling you.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-01-04

Brigid and Daniel love each other, but Tommy O'Toole, an interfering leprechaun causes the two to be forever separated. It was 1873, when Daniel was arrested as a rebel and deported to America.

While Daniel's plight takes him to Pennsylvania Coal Company and the Molly Maguires, Brigid is left behind in Ireland, where loneliness and hunger are constant companions.

Tommy O'Toole is banished from his world until he can redeem himself. In the twenty-first century, he finds his chance with Maggie and Galen.

Maggie Carroll dreams are like a siren's call to Ireland. On a whim, she enters a contest to win a trip to the Emerald Island, never imagining that she would end up being one of the top contestants. As much as it pains her to do so, she must turn down the offer for she has two young children to care for. She can't in good conscious go chasing after her dreams and leave them alone, but Galen Devlin will not take no for an answer.

Galen Devlin works for Traveling Tour Company. To promote tours to Ireland, he started a campaign where a person was to describe in a brief paragraph his or her reason for the `pipes' calling them back home to the Emerald Island. He reads Maggie's explanation and is intrigued. Now all he has to do is convince the stubborn woman to come to New York by St. Patrick's Day, where the final contestant will be chosen.

With a little bit of glamour from Tommy O'Toole, the stories are told. True love is forever and some dreams do come true.

Ms. Murphy has taken two stories: one, an Irish tale of star-crossed lovers; another of fated soul mates, and interweaved them into this beautifully told story enriched with history, folklore and a touch of magic. She truly is a gifted Seanachaí (storyteller).

    Book Description

In the summer of 1776, Joseph Plumb Martin was a fifteen-year-old Connecticut farm boy who considered himself "as warm a patriot as the best of them." He enlisted that July and stayed in the revolutionary army until hostilities ended in 1783. Martin fought under Washington, Lafayette, and Steuben. He took part in major battles in New York, Monmouth, and Yorktown. He wintered at Valley Forge and then at Morristown, considered even more severe. He wrote of his war years in a memoir that brings the American Revolution alive with telling details, drama, and a country boy's humor. Jim Murphy lets Joseph Plumb Martin speak for himself throughout the text, weaving in historical backfround details wherever necessary, giving voice to a teenager who was an eyewitness to the fight that set America free from the British Empire.

Joseph Plumb Martin is fifteen in 1775 when tensions between the American colonists and their British rulers erupt. He witnesses the organization and recruitment of a local military force, untrained and undersupplied. Martin hesitatingly enlists for the limit period of six months, required by the state militia. He sees combat at Gowanus Creek and is part of Washington's retreat to Manhattan Island. After colonial morale is lifted by Washington's surprise attack on the British at Trenton, Joseph re-enlists for the duration of the war and participates in the long, miserable winter march to and encampment at Valley Forge. Joseph remains in the Continental Army until the signing of the provisional peace treaty with the British in 1783. By this time he is twenty-two and has grown from a boy to a man.
This is an excellent choice of historical non-fiction for young adults for several reasons. First of all, the personal story, told in Martin's own strikingly honest words, is never embellished upon, and helps to focus an otherwise complex political story. Secondly, the American forces, often depicted in domestic versions of this war as having been invincibly heroic, are here described exactly as the poorly trained and undisciplined force that they initially were. Washington's losses and retreats from the British are diligently explained. Since Martin's military experience involved serving in several capacities, he is a good choice for a commentator. The author, who has received awards for his previous works on military history for young adults, does not shy away from the unpleasant news that Americans, confronted by a superior fighting force and often low on morale, walked away from battlefields once their enlistments were up and, in some cases, deserted. Moreover, he points out that, while Washington's army was starving at Valley Forge, the local citizenry had food in surplus and could have shared more with the soldiers, many of whom had no shoes that winter.
Heavily illustrated with reproductions of prints and paintings of the events discussed, this creative approach to an old subject highlights the subjectivity and propagandistic nature of "historical" art: The same series of events are depicted differently by various artists depending on their political affiliations. Murphy is careful to point out that elegant artistic renderings of American troops have very little in common with the crude reality of their service. A complete bibliography is provided as well as a useful time line. This book is highly recommended for grades six and up as well as for adults interested in an objective account of the American War for Independence.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!.......1999-04-17

I'm 12 years-old and I thought this story was very exciting. My older brother read it also, and he said it was great. It is about a fifteen-year-old boy who is eager to go to war. However, it ends up being the most horrifying life a young man could have. I would give six stars if I could. Since I can't, I'll write it down: six stars!

5 out of 5 stars The Boys' War.......2007-06-08

Thousands of boys fought in the Civil War, kids from 12 to 16, fighting with, and against, grown men. Some went to war over slavery; some went to protect their families. Many didn't even know the reasons; they just wanted an adventure, a reason to escape boredom.

This is the story of those boys. Based on diary entries and letters, The Boys' War tells all about their war: Why they joined, what they wore, how they lived, what they ate, if they survived, if they didn't. You'll go with them from the homestead to the training camps right into the heat of battle. And by the end, you'll know them.
