Book Description
The book was hidden well.
It’s pages promised the power of the Witch-King himself.
And now that it’s been found, even the fact that it kills anyone foolish enough to crack its cover won’t stop people from fighting over it.
Welcome to the Bloodstone Lands!
Human assassin Artemis Entreri and his dark elf companion Jarlaxle have come to the demon-haunted wastelands of the frozen north at the request of their dragon patron. It doesn’t take long for them to find themselves caught in the middle of a struggle between powerful forces that would like nothing more than to see them both dead . . . or worse.
But Entreri and Jarlaxle aren’t just any wandering sellswords, and the ancient evils and bitter blood-feuds of the wild Bloodstone Lands may have finally met their match.

A Promising Continuation.......2007-08-10
R.A. Salvatore's Promise of the Witch-King is a continuation of the Sellswords saga which began with Servant of the Shard. Originally part of the Paths of Darkness series, Servant of the Shard branched away from focusing on Drizzt Do'Urden and instead featured his nemesis Artemis Entreri and the rouge drow Jarlaxle. The story starts off at a good pace and only slows in spots. It offers a good bit of insight into the relationship between the assassin and the drow, focusing not on their past, but the growth of both characters. Ever humorous, suspenseful, and action-paced, Promise of the Witch-King is a great follow-up to Servant of the Shard and a good build up to the next book in the series, Road of the Patriarch. Hopefully, there will be much more to come.
Amazing.......2007-05-08
Being an avid FR reader, I never saw this coming. And when i say this I mean the coupling of Entreri and Jalraxle in a series of their own. Salvatore has created a full, detailed and personal background of both characters, which, in addition to his amazing combat illustration and, to my total joy, the side achingly funny comments that both characters spit out at each other; renders this whole series as some of his best work till date.
ps. totaly lost hope of Entreri hooking up with anyone, the ending caught me by surprise!!
Wonderful characters!.......2007-02-21
I have to agree with eggs maledict; I believe Jarlaxle and Entreri have now outstripped Drizzt! Reading Servant of the Shard had me wanting more, and when this book came out I devoured it! Sure there were small parts I didn't like too much, but overall this book was one of Salvatore's best. Taking a break from Mithril Hall did him some good!
I love Salvatore's writing style in that he can engage me emotionally. I've read passages that had me sighing and thinking to myself "Yes! That's exactly how I feel, sometimes!". And I get so engaged with his main characters. I didn't give a flip about Ellery, and Calihay - or however her name is spelled - really annoyed me most of the time, but I deeply cared about what was going through Entreri's mind, and yet he didn't go soft on me at all! He's still one cold blooded killer, and I don't see him changing that part any time soon.
And how can I describe my love for Jarlaxle? Yes, he was a tad silly, but that just made him more real to me. He's an opportunistic jackle who's own enthusiasm for EVERYTHING sometimes causes him to slip up. I can't help but smile when he's talking his talk and working that charm, because even though you know he's being dishonest and exasperating, you love him!! Or I do.
All in all, I LOVED this book and series!
Surprisingly Engaging.......2007-02-01
Salvatore developed the character of Artemis very nicely in this book and made it possible for him to be the focus of a series of books. Also there were many new characters added into the book that were never heard about before and Salvatore did a good job of giving each of them their own identity and role in the story development. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story and plan on getting the third book in the series.
A tragic Waste!.......2007-01-31
Ok, that may be overstating my point a bit much, but I think we've all come to expect more that a dungeon crawl from Mr. Salvatore. There was a little substance to this one, but so many lengthy battle scenes. Jarlaxle and Entreri have a fascinating dynamic, but that was definitely underemployed in this novel.

Not as Promising.......2007-10-10
"Magic's Promise" suffers from a problem common to many trilogies-it carries on from the first part, and at the same time it's all in anticipation of the grand finale.
In "Magic's Promise",Vanyel is sent to solve a royal murder mystery. It's pretty conventional, and surprisingly cliched for Mercedes Lackey. Mercedes Lackey is unaccustomed to writing mystery stories;it shows especially in this installment.
However,"Magic's Promise" does have promise. Vanyel struggles with the loss of his lover,Tylendel,as well as his feelings of attraction towards a young, teenaged prince. His banter with his Companion,Yfandes, shows the deep bond between them. Vanyel's relationship with his family is also developed as they come to terms with his homosexuality. "Magic's Promise" leaves the reader wanting more, and Lackey delivers.
Vanyel's Amazing Tale Contines..........2007-05-05
Naturally, after I finished reading the first book (Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald-Mage Series, Book 1)) in "The Last Herald-Mage" trilogy, I had to dive into the next one. Had to see what Vanyel would be up to now that he'd become a Herald-Mage.
Turns out he's the most powerful Herald-Mage and when we first see him again, he's in desperate need of some good rest. All the magic he's been doing on his mission has taken its toll. He decides to spend some time with his family, since they keep asking for him to visit, and hopes he can find some rest while he's there.
Well, wouldn't you know it? Rest is not what he gets at all. Yfandes receives a desperate call from across the border that a fellow companion is in danger. She and Vanyel take off to help. There they find an amnesiac Herald Prince, whose tale brings about an entire host of problems that ensure Vanyel will not be getting rest for some time to come.
What I love about this book is the relationship between Vanyel and his companion, Yfandes. She is a magnificent force and a fitting companion for him. Their conversations are highly entertaining, be it teasing, emotionally charged ones, or even just idle chit chat.
I also like that Vanyel starts to learn that people look at him funny because they are in awe (or fear) of his power, not because he is gay. Yeah, he can be a little dense. Powerful, but dense.
However, his power is what makes him so isolated from others. He is sent continually on missions because he is the only one who can do what needs to be done. I had to keep reminding myself that the trilogy is called "The Last Herald-Mage." He has to because there are so few left, not to mention the simple fact that many of the people, Herald's too, see Herald-Mages as the only solvers to every problem.
I found it fascinating to see Vanyel grown up and how he approaches each situation. I felt saddened too by all he's gone through...very. I found myself only more attached to the character by the reading of this book. Simply put...he and his story are amazing!
An Utterly Engrossing Series!.......2007-03-31
I picked up this series because I was in the process of writing a fantasy novel with a gay hero and I wanted to see what other works were out there. I had never read Ms. Lackey's work, so I didn't know what to expect. I was not just pleasantly surprised by this trilogy, I was completely captivated by it and very sad when I reached the final page. The plot is interesting and the pace is quick. The characters, especially the hero Vanyel, are extremely sympathetic, primarily due to the fact that they are so flawed. Some may find the romance a bit sappy, but I'm the first to admit that I dig that kind of thing and you'll see it in my own novels as well.Orphan's Quest (Chronicles of Firma, Book One) Best of all for me, though, was the fact that although her hero is unapologetically gay, the series does not become mired in its "gayness" as so many other works of gay-themed fiction I have read.
This trilogy gave me a great deal of inspiration to push on with my own fantasy aspirations. I owe Misty a big hug if we ever meet face to face. I highly recommend these three books. Whether you're gay or straight, you'll find them an excellent read and, like me, you'll be sorry to reach that last page.
Pretty good, once you get past the homosexuality.......2006-02-27
I really had to detach myself from the main character because he's gay. It drastically lowered my enjoyment of the book. But, the story was actually pretty good and worth reading.
For a series with the word "Magic" in each title, I thought the use of magic was woefully small. Most of the "good stuff" happens "off-screen" and is only mentioned as an aside.
The "hero" was constantly described as the most powerful herald-mage alive, perhaps ever. Yet, I only ever saw him do something that seemed rather basic and then suffer for days or weeks during recover from over-using his magic.
Finally, it was hard for me to fully enjoy a story that focuses so much on the depression, moodiness, and sulkiness of the hero.
Still... I found it worth reading. (Though I won't recommend it to my kids.)
magic's promise.......2005-10-30
This volume continues the trilogy of Herald Mage Vanyel Ashkevron. He returns after an exhausting Border stint dealing with all sorts of unfriendly magic creatures to find a letter waiting for him from his father, who wants him to pay a visit. Naturally, magic is involved, including a demon, various nodes of supernatural power, and a young man who may or may not have killed his family (by magic).
The only thing that didn't ring true for me were the reconcilaition between Jervis, the armsmaster and Vanyel. Suddenly, a man who's always been shown to be a brutal bully is dissolving and apologizing and incidentally shown not to have any prejudice against gays (which Vanyel is). Ditto the previously stern and foreboding father suddenly happy to mend any old wounds. The forgiveness happened way too fast to be believable.

Fantasy With Passion.......2005-08-15
Mercedes Lackey's Last herald Mage series consists of three different books, originally published separately: Magic's Pawn, Magic's Promise and Magic's Price. They describe the life of one man, from adolescence to maturity, who lives in a world peopled with kings, warriors, fantastical creatures and all of the things that readers of fantasy have come to love and identify with.
One slight twist: Vanyel, the story's protagonist, just happens to be gay.
From the titles, the stories obviously have to do with magic and the people who wield it. Lackey writes with great passion, and it is her love for the world she's created in these books that makes them worthwhile. Her system of magic isn't overly complex, but it is well thought out, and has appeal to a wide range of readers.
Rather than focusing on epic battles and the machinations of vast armies, Lackey concentrates on character development and interpersonal relationships. One gets a sense that she spent time getting to know each character and giving that character a piece of herself.
The first book deals with Vanyel's coming of age. I won't go into detail, because spoiling the plot is hardly the point of a reader review. I will say that where Lackey fails is that she sometimes is reduced to the overly dramatic. When something slightly funny happens, the characters shove fists in mouths to keep from laughing, and can barely stand up for fear of splitting sides. When something bad happens, it's always the worst thing imaginable. But such is adolescence, and one comes to enjoy Vanyel's strengths, be annoyed with his faults and earnestly hope he will mature. Which he does.
Aside from creating a very competent feel for magic use, from the perspective of a reader of fantasy, the plots to each of the three stories are interesting and well written. The plots move, rather than just serving as an excuse for another writer to extrapolate upon what she thinks magic is.
On top of all of that, a love story that touches the heart, if you're a reader who enjoys that sort of thing.
Mercedes Lackey writes with grace and style. If you are a reader of fantasy who enjoys works by writers such as Anne McCaffrey or Terry Brooks, the Last Herald Mage series is definitely something you should consider putting on your reading list.

Great Book!!.......2000-11-22
I thought this was a great book, partly because it at last told about Tahiri's past, which was something I'd been wondering about for a while, but also because it told about Anakin and Tahiri's friendship and how they work together through the force. This was not my absolute favorite in the series (that loses by a hair to Lyric's World) but it was definitly the best written. This book, and the rest of the series is best for children twelve and under, though anyone could read it and enjoy it. I read these books aloud to my mom and my little brother and he liked them so much he went and bought his own set.
This is worth buying . . ........2000-02-26
"Promises" is about Tahiri's long forgotten past. It's worth buying (hint, hint).
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because in the previous books, Tahiri seems like a happy, normal girl who talks a lot. There is no suspense--or anything at all--that makes the reader want to know anything personal about her. In the beginning, the author should have let Tahiri have lines like,"I wonder what happened to my parents," or something like that. Because of the lack of suspense on this subject in the previous books, the author makes this story seem like it was merely "thrown in" with the series. Tahiri's past hasn't much to do about solving the Golden Globe (that's what the series is about, isn't it?). Despite these little flaws, "Promises" itself was a book worth buying.
Fun and Full of action.......1998-10-29
This book is very interesting. I like it because Anakin and Tahiri are stuck in the middle of the desert.
It's all about Tahari learning what happend to her parents........1998-06-21
The book is about Tahari learning from the Tuskan raiders what happened to her parents - how they died, and whether it was on purpose or by accident. I gave this 4 stars because it was not as good as Leric's World but I thought it was better than The Golden Globe - that was 2 stars

A Strong Finish to a Wonderful Series.......2007-05-15
The Raider's Promise is an outstanding last book in the Viking Quest series! It's a page turner with high suspense popping up when you least expect it. Author Lois Walfrid Johnson's thorough research takes you right into Leif Erikson's expedition to the new world. Main characters Bree and her brother Devin have unique experiences and many surprises. Mikkel, the Viking raider, comes even more alive in this moving story. Bravo for a satisfying and wonderful culminating book in this series!
The best book ever! A million stars!.......2006-11-25
I'm thirteen, and I just got these less than a year ago...and I'm already reading this series for the third time! It's a book that never gets old! You'll read it over and over again and never get tired of it! If you could give it a million stars...I would!
The way the book is written...is magical! You want to read it slowly to get every word, yet at the same time yourself reading it as fast as you can! It's got mystery and danger...but unlike most...it's so real! The best thing is that the characters always turn to God when they need help instead of panicking or thinking they can do it on their own!
As soon as I was done reading the first, second, third and fourth book...I picked up #5! The first one was a million stars, the second one was even better, the third was even better than that, and it just keeps going up and up! The bigger the number...the better they are! (If that's possible!)
I'm not gonna tell you what happens...cause you need to find out what happens for yourself in this one too! You'll find yourself totally rapped up and lost in the book without even realizing that hours that have gone by again!
Although I was really sad to find out that this one was the last one in the series...I knew I could read them again! And that's what I've done! Starting all the way at the beginning to the happy ending! Only unlike fairytale endings...this happy ending is so real!
This is defiantly a must read! For everyone! No excuses!Even people who don't like to read will lose themselves in these books!
(And believe it or not: So far...every single review for every single book has five stars!)
Raiders Promise.......2006-11-03
I've read all the Viking Quest books. It is just about my
favorite series of books. This was the last book in the series and I
disliked my Viking adventure coming to an end. But your Viking adventure
could just be begining. After you read the first book, Raiders from the sea, you will probably just want to go on to the next and the next until you get to the last book. I highly recommend this series.
Morality Review.......2006-06-13
I thought that this was an excellent, Christian book written in a biblical worldview by a very wise woman.
Sensuality:
All the sensuality in this book is more romance than anything, and is very God honoring and appropriate for 7 year olds to 107 year olds.
Violence:
There are very tense parts in this book, but no gory battlefields or anything of the like.
Drug/Alcohol Use:
I don't believe that it mentions anything, but if it does, it talks only about a sip of wine.
Crude or Profane Language:
Absolutely none.
Conclusion:
The basic plot has be written about by several others, but I will give my opinion: I highly recommend this book to anyone, at any age!
The Raiders Promise.......2006-04-17
This book is the last in the Viking Quest seris. I highly reccomend this book. It is a compelling page turner. Any one any age will enjoy it a benift from it (just read what people have said at the beginning of the book). This is one of the best books I have every read.In fact, it is the best seris I have ever read!

Customer Reviews:
Very, very impressive.......2006-08-11
I think it took a lot of guts for an upholster to write a book like this. I was very impressed that someone without any experience could write so well. The editing may not have been perfect, but I don't think the "Divine" expects perfection (which the book is very clear about). Anyone expecting God to edit His own work is just plain ridiculous. The content was extremely enlightening, and definitely God sent. I hope this author continues to write, I think she has an important message.
This needs edited badly. .......2006-08-11
Just on the back cover of this book, there are six errors of spelling, punctuation, and usage. If this book was truly from the Divine, surely He would edit his work. The fluidity of reading this book was sketchy at best, and positively rambling at worst. In order to affect people, a book must be tightly edited; that demands respect. I think winning the game of life must not require these demands, but reading the book does.
It filled me with confidence.......2006-08-07
My father died last year . He was my best friend. After reading this book I stopped blaming God and I started praising his name. Now I know that my life has meaning even if I can't talk to my dad and receive the encouragement that I need to live. Now I feel like I can let go of the past and march forward with confidence so I can win my game of life just like my dad won his.
Great book!.......2006-08-02
Demons and angels, self-writing typewriters, elaborate games. You have to read it for yourself. There is not a dull moment.
Best book ever! .......2006-08-02
Best book ever! I am raising three kids, who are three and under. This book helped me deal with the frustration and loneliness of motherhood by encouraging me not to be so hard on myself. I realized that as long as I was doing my best, that was good enough, and I would succeed the tasks God had set out for me.

Customer Reviews:
The Hope Chest.......2005-07-29
Susan Kearney's story was the best out of all. This book was'nt what I expected. None the less the stories were put together very nicely by Susan Kearney in her part of the story. All in all not bad.
Great idea--not so great content........2005-05-24
It was a good idea--connecting the 3 different romance genres (regency/historical, contemporary, & futuristic) by writing around a common object (mysterious box) in the past, present, and future. Unfortunately, the stories were mediocre at best, with the first one (Yesterday's Magic) being perhaps the best of the three. This one is going in my discard pile. I would not recommend it unless you are willing to be only moderately amused.
three related well written romantic novellas .......2005-03-05
"Yesterday's Magic" by Jacquie D'Alessandro. In 1820 Cardiff Maxwell buys a hope chest at Gibson's Antiques and Curiosities just before Amanda tries to purchase the same item. He is cold to her efforts to buy the chest from him. Though the earl is known as the "Crazed Killer of Cardiff" due to the Scandalous Incident, he and Amanda fall in love due to the "matchmaking" of the hope chest.
"Today's Secrets" by Julie Kenner. While Ryan celebrates his taking over as head of Kinsey Applied Sciences, reporter Marty reflects on how disappointed her father, head of Allied International Technology, is in her. Marty and Ryan meet and are attracted to one another, but when he sees her hope chest with a special formula written on it he becomes fascinated with that. She wonders if he loves her hope chest or her.
"Tomorrow's Promise" by Susan Kearney. In 2705 Mars, womanologist Kendar looks back three centuries to doomed heroine Sara, a Martian archeologist, who tried to shut down a machine that ultimately obliterated the female population. While visiting Station 32 the site of Sara's doom, Kendar is sent back to 2405. He meets Sara. Together they must interpret the ancient Martian writings on the machine, a hope chest, or women will vanish from the planet.
This anthology contains three related romantic novellas that is fun to follow as readers gradually learn the secrets of THE HOPE CHEST. Each tale is unique with Ms. D'Alessandro providing a Regency; Ms. Kenner a contemporary; and Ms. Kearny a futuristic science fiction. Yet each tale is linked by fine writing that stars delightful protagonists and the overall lead the Hope Chest.
