2 out of 5 stars Environmental Risk Consultant.......2007-09-18

Teachers should be advised to identify to students the possibility of environmental hyperbole in Chapter 7, "Saving the Rain Forests". Absence of scientific attribution to deforestation rates make it difficult to know whether the authors are using reliable scientific sources for their data or simply repeating hyperbole found in radical environmental materials. Scientific documentation used by Dr. Bjorn Lomborg in "The Skeptical Environmentalist" appears to be contrary to the deforestation issue information as portrayed by Will Osborne and Mary Pope Osborne. I cannot recommend the use of Chapter 7 in this book in elementary school classrooms.

4 out of 5 stars Good info, v. readable.......2002-03-14

Our girls read this after a trip to the Amazon, and found lots that they recognized & enjoyed. The standard of information is rather higher than that in the Magic Tree house books, which is reasonable, given that they don't have to worry about plot & characters as well!

If your child enjoys Magic Tree house, and would like to know more about the Amazon this is fine, but I would also recommend One Small Square: Tropical Rainforests (by Donald Silver). We took this with us to the rainforest (see review) and found it to be excellent.

1 out of 5 stars Not Free SF Reader.......2007-09-03

Again, too dull to finish. Perhaps it has something to do with it trying to connect to The Mists of Avalon, but being completely different, and just two characters that have been created to have a romance, a Roman, and one of the priestesses of the local religion. If you like that sort of Tristan and Isolde thing, then this may well be for you.

4 out of 5 stars Second Book in the Avalon Series.......2007-08-07

Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67. Writing for over 4 decades, she is best known for her Darkover science fantasy series and her Arthurian masterpiece, The Mists of Avalon. She also edited anthologies for 14 years and published Marion Zimmer Bradley's FANTASY Magazine.

She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack.

This is the3 second book in the Avalon series and follows the best selling Mists of Avalon. Inside the wall of the Forest House in a remote part of of Britain, a secret sect of Druidic priestesses guards the ancient rites of learning, healing and magic against the onslaught of the Roman army. Nothing has ever been able to stop the might of Rome's legions, will a few women be any more successful?

2 out of 5 stars Could have been good..........2007-03-12

It really could have been good. The story was very interesting. Unfortunately:

1. It was poorly written. SO many sentences did not make sense. I would have to go back and read and reread. It seems like she was trying to make it more wordy than it needed to be.

2. The characters were not developed. Except for Caillean. So I ended up with basically no attachment to the main characters. Was it really necessary to spend a few chapters on Gaius' career when we don't know jack about most other things in the book?

3. It seems like chapters are missing. This book should have been longer or had a bunch of half-finished plots left out. Like the ending. It seems like the ending was on fast forward. You might as well read Cliff Notes. I felt the same way about the end of Mists, too, but this was worse.

4. Can't somone just write a book that is "pagan friendly" yet not all about rape and torture and sacrifice? All these books are doing is making me hate the Romans and Christians of the time and leaving me with a sense of despair. I just want one book where they weren't all shown as heathen sacrificers and the Christians show them how to be civilized, "good people".

4 out of 5 stars good set-up for "Mists".......2007-03-09

"the Forest House" can certainly stand alone as a very good read, but for fans of "the Mists of Avalon", certain attitudes and relationship are clarified.

5 out of 5 stars 3rd book in the Mists series doesn't dissapoint.......2006-07-19

This book is the third book in the Mists of Avalon series, following "The Fall of Atlantis" and "Ancestors of Avalon." Although this book starts far later than the ending of the previous book, and with all new characters, there are bits and pieces of the characters that tie them in as reincarnations of characters from the previous books, including bindings that they've made with each other before.

As with all the books in this series, I found this one to be very spiritual. It gives a sense of connectedness with the past and Pagan spiritualness.

This story takes place in 1st century AD, when the priestesses and Druids are mostly practicing to the north of Avalon, and then covers the priestesses and Druids moving to Avalon to establish there. This lineage will go through to "The Mists of Avalon."

The situations and characters in this book have their stories continued in the first part of the book "Lady of Avalon."

5 out of 5 stars Awesome...just brilliant!.......2007-09-30

Mary Pope Osborne is a brilliant writer. She captivates the audience to whom she writes for in a magical way. Anyone who critizices her is just jealous and wishes that they had thought about writing the Magic Tree House Series themselves. I volunteer at an Elementary School Library in California, and I must say that the most seeked for Series by students is without a doubt the Magic Tree House Series. Mary Pope Osborne is able to charm children of all ages, even those who normally are not really interested in picking up a book. I have to say that I, myself love reading all her books. My grandchildren love the magic within them, and I love how they learn tidbits of information that no child would go out of their way to learn. Furthermore, the introduction to those subjects always inspires them to ask questions and talk about the books that they read. I hope that she continues writing for many years to come. My youngest granddaughter has the entire collection, and we look forward for future books.

Mary Pope Osborn is one of my favorite authors. She has written many books and she has a great imagination.
In the book, Afternoon on the Amazon, Jack and Annie find themselves Amazon rain forest. Here, Jack and Annie thought that they were in a bush, but they were on a tree that went over 150 feet. The forest was filled with trees like this, and it had three layers. They met many animals like monkeys, snakes, and crocodiles. I suggest that you read about their adventure in and enjoy it for yourself.

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

The title of this book could not be more explicit or apt. With 40 actual wood specimens in popular use, descriptions of grain, color and texture, how to identify trees by their leaves, fruit, and bark, and much more, this is a small encyclopedia for woodworkers, carpenters, hobbyists, dealers, architects, craftsmen, nature lovers, teachers, or anyone with the urge to learn about wood. With small, aromatic samples of 40 varieties of wood, from afrormosia to zebrawood, this book even smells good! --Mark Hetts

Book Description

Strong, pliable, and natural, wood is the world's most versatile structural resource. But how to tell one kind from another and choose just the right wood for your project? This remarkable collection of forty actual wood samples shows the color, grain, and texture of the leading varieties. Detailed drawings identify uncut, unfinished trees by their leaves, fruits, and bark. Originally published in 1969, and now in its eighth printing, this straightforward text explains where each kind of tree is grown and how to use its wood to the best advantage--from lamination to veneering, from carving and molding, to finishing. Here, too, is the history of man's use of wood from the Stone Age ax to modern-day conservation issues and rare rain-forest species. What Wood Is That? is an invaluable resource for builders, homeowners, and hobbyists--and a fascinating companion for forest guides and nature lovers.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Focus on foreign...what about domestic?.......2007-04-04

This book is very handy when identifying and working with foreign wood, but for domestic wood identification try the United State's Department of Agriculture's "The Encyclopedia of Wood." It's extremely in-depth and informative.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-05

Gift for my husband. He just loves it. Very informative and helpful.

1 out of 5 stars Focus On European Not USA Species.......2000-12-04

This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent. Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.

The book is very badly outdated and lists uses for various woods not seen since the late fifties and early sixties.

Consider carefully before purchasing this book.

4 out of 5 stars Quiet and straightforward.......2000-10-27

This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.

In between there is quite a bit of useful information on wood, and the history of woodworking. A pretty good introduction to wood for and woodworking. This book will be only modestly useful in identification, since it is limited to naked eye observations of those 40 woods.

I browsed through the 1969 edition and it clearly is from another era (with the chainsaw just being introduced!). I can well imagine that those who equate woodworking with roaring high speed machines may find this quiet book not to their liking.

5 out of 5 stars Great samples. Great book........1999-05-15

If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book to be a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection.

This book will help anyone who owns property and wants to improve your timberstand.

4 out of 5 stars Good introduction for the new woodlands owner.......2006-03-06

This book offers a solid introduction to woodlot ownership. The book covers conservation, measurement, and some legal/inheritance issues. The book takes you step-by-step through the basic process of each of these areas. I found the chapter on measurement to be a good quick-and-dirty guide to measuring your timber. Other reviewers have faulted the book for being too simplistic or referring woodlot owners to professional forresters, but I found it to be a good starting point for a complicated subject.

Each chapter and many special sections contain references to other sources of information. I found this particularly helpful in the measurement section. I have a couple of other books that are very detailed in the area of measurement. This book summarized the process in one chapter and provided numerous other sources for more detail in the form of state forestry articles that would have otherwise been dificult to locate.

The book is simple on some levels but it is clear that the authors love forestry (particulary stewardship) and want to convey both the knowlege and the joy of woodland ownership. A GREAT book for beginning your journey into this complex subject.

1 out of 5 stars Extremely Basic.......2004-11-14

This book is essentially applied common sense. If you have ever thought about balancing multiple uses on your land or public lands then you don't need this book.

Extremely remedial and basic stuff -- nothing really actionable in the book. I much preferred Working with your Woodland by Beattie, but have not read Morsbach.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for City Slickers. .......2004-08-25

I found this book to be an incredibly valuable asset in the managing of my newly acquired 10 acres of woods. I had no previous experience and didn't read this text until I had owned it for several months. Unfortunately, I had learned the hard way many of the common sense facts the authors share in these pages. It is a well-written and well-documented work that is perfect for those of us who wish to conserve and preserve deciduous woodlands. I have opened mine up as a guide and reference several times after finishing it.

2 out of 5 stars Some good ideas but too long and overly general.......2003-09-27

The Woodlot Management Handbook has some good ideas but the gist of the book could be presented in one third the space. Many common sense observations are previewed, presented, and then recapped. Although written for the novice, this book
anoyingly talks down to the reader. Common Sense Forestry by Hans Morsbach covers much of the same material with a clear and concise style and also manages to be far mor informative.

I grew up on a farm in Winona County in the 50's and 60's hunting and fishing every chance I had. Reading chapter after chapter, from my experiences which are a bit different, but similar, than Kenny's, I relived part of my life again and many of the phrases found in the book jogged my memory nicely. I spent four years at Winona State and did my share of fishing below the dam and wandering around some of the backwaters on the Wisconsin side of the river amid much of the wildlife Kenny encountered. Each almanac chapter, as well as the Rat Tales, are filled with information and feelings that only a true naturalist could convey. This book is a facinating account of a river rat's calendar year and all the beauty and excitement in and around the Mississippi River from one month to the next. A must read for anyone who lives in this area or wishes they did.

5 out of 5 stars Most Honest Accounting of "A River Rat".......2002-06-15

I have known Kenny since 1980, although I've only started reading this story I am extremely comfortable with the pace and grace Mr. Bestul uses. Kenny is everything the book says he is a very hard working, deliberate, honest, kind and caring person, without a mean bone in him. I've shared stories and bread with Kenny, and he really is the type of person you would like to know personally. Mary Kay's illustrations are graceful and a pleasure to view alongside this wonderful story.
In my opinion this book is a must for any outdoorsman, or for a quiet read next to a fire. I sincerely hope you enjoy Kenny's story as much as I am.

    Book Description

This revised and extended second edition of "Identification of tropical woody plants" is a concise representation of vegetative characters of woody taxa. It presents a unique identification system, permitting recognition of plant families in all seasons by means of morphological and macroanatomical features which are easily observable, permanent, and which provide a great deal of taxonomic information.

The identification system has been designed in the form of a dichotomous key, which is illustrated with figures of woody plants showing their architecture and the morphological characters of barks, branches and leaves. The book has been revised according to the latest molecular biological findings in taxonomy. Additional families are included, as well as representative examples on color plates. A new key for the main groups of euphorbiacean genera has been included.

This field guide will be an essential companion to botanists and ecologists.

5 out of 5 stars One of the better books on my landscape books shelf........2004-08-26

To fill my information needs to provide the service of a Designer and Arborist, I've found that no single book is perfect, nor teaches every aspect:

Considering that, this book about Trees of North America is one of the better books for for illustrating plant parts like leaves, for plant Identification - for the money. It helps me help others.

Some books contain more tree species and cultivars - but be ready to spend 3 to 5 times more money too. And, many more expensive books, although the photos are nice, don't have the same side-by-side comparisons that this Trees of North America book has.

The photos of leaves, twigs, flowers and bark, are all enlarged sufficiently to see the details without "straining" or guessing.

If I need to take one book in-the-field with me, this is the one. The weight is appropriate for transport, and it gets the job done.

This is not what I'd call a cultural care book. It is a good plant ID and plant selection book. You will know if cones are too big, or the tree will be too small - or large.

Since tree care and selection requires several books - this will be one to include in that landscape library assortment. I own several other much more expensive books, but I still have this one, and it's not leaving my library.

    3 out of 5 stars A Bit Disappointing.......1999-10-13

I really looked forward to getting a copy of this book. I'm a big fan of the Random House series of plant books authored by Phillips and Rix and I was expecting something of the quality of their books on perennials and bulbs. Now the book is glossy, the photographs excellent and each tree listed is given a concise desciption of its habit and range. Particularly useful is the leaf identification guide, which is arranged in such a way that you don't have to know the meaning of "subacuminate" to discover the name of that tree you've been coveting in the neighbour's yard down the street. Unfortunately the book has several flaws. With a few exceptions, cultivars and varieties of the trees listed are not shown, so the book's usefulness, horticulturally speaking, is limited. Hardiness limits are not given. There are also some odd lapses in coverage. For example, _Cercis siliquastrum_ , Judas Tree, a European tree, is shown, while _Cercis canadensis_ , Redbud, the common North American native is not. That stalwart of the American south, the Live Oak (_Quercus virginiana_) is absent as well. For a book that purports to list "500 of the most common and important trees" this is very strange indeed. At the end of the day, the basic problem with this book is that it can't decide if it's aimed for the naturalist is the field or the horticultural enthusiast. Unfortunately, it will satisfy neither, as it is not a comprehensive guide. The beginning (and serious) gardener will want to consult instead one of Michael Dirr's excellent books; more sophisticated should see this book as a supplement, but not a replacement, for Dirr.
