I wouldn't put Eisler up there with Robert B. Parker or Vince Flynn but it's good summertime reading.

5 out of 5 stars Eisler keeps getting better.......2007-06-19

John Rain, Part IV... nice work yet again from the best of the best of the hit man thrillers. (Of course, I say this with all due respect to Lee Child.)

This time around, Rain finds himself in uncharted territory. As the title implies, the tables have turned after a botched job makes Rain a liability to the Mossad. Plus, as things heat up with Delilah, his Israeli secret agent love interest, Rain finds himself feeling vulnerable in ways he'd rather not.

This was also uncharted territory for Eisler to some degree: it's the first time in the series we see other points of view beyond that of our hero. Eisler handled it with ease and it makes for a smart thrill ride, upping the stakes to the max for Rain and his crew.

Eisler continues to deliver.

4 out of 5 stars real page turner.......2007-05-15

i wound up reading this on the beach in two days, it's very much something you can't put down. as usual eisler gets a bit too detailed at times (there are pages that could be summarized as "i punched him and he tried to slash me with a razor"), which can be a nuisance. despite that, it's still got a lot of suspense, and it's stimulating and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars John Rain Out of Japan.......2007-04-24

John Rain, the mysterious Japanese-American quasi-CIA assassin, finally leaves Japan in this thriller and takes on new breed of bad guys in Hong Kong and Macau in Rain Storm. The John Rain stories are well thought out and packed with action. Although these novels do sometimes contain the cheesy one-liners that most quick novels do (one of the characters in this book, Dox, reminded me of the white Harley-riding guy from Bloodsport), I find that Eisler also provides valuable insights into life, cultures, and relationships. I especially enjoyed Rain's trip to Brazil at the beginning of this book. As someone who has spent a lot of time with Japanese Brazilians, I appreciated the cultural struggle that many of them deal with in Japan and at home in Brazil as explained briefly in this book.

One thing Eisler does extremely well is that he uses his cities as characters themselves. Hong Kong is undoubtedly different from Tokyo, as is Macau from Rio. And this shows in the author's explanation of the cities. The pace and the people of each location are painted vibrantly in the reader's mind. And almost for that alone I appreciate these books and rely on them to take me somewhere else, away from New York. All in all, this is a quick read, but is another fine John Rain novel.

4 out of 5 stars light, absorbing spy thriller with insights into Japan.......2007-01-04

I've read the first four books in the John Rain series. All entertaining page-turners with good action, suspense, engaging plot lines. Insights into Japanese culture and martial arts set this series apart from garden-variety thrillers. Highly recommended.

A Storm for All Seasons - Winter Ice By Jaci Burton Book 3 in the Storm For All Seasons series. Control is everything to Logan Storm. Control over the family business, the Rising Storm Hotel in New Orleans, control over his emotions, and control over the magic within him. Sophie Breaux is the granddaughter of a voodoo princess and welcomes the supernatural powers that live within her. She's been having visions about hot and sexy Logan Storm. Visions of destiny and of danger. When she tries to warn him, Logan thinks she's a con artist and wants no part of the raven-haired goddess. The one thing Logan can't control is Sophie's fiery passion. She melts his walls of ice with her sultry heat, threatening everything that is orderly in his life. His control begins to slip away with every touch, every inflamed kiss, and he's powerless to stop his feelings. Sophie knows that in order to save Logan she must melt his cold heart with scorching love. And when a woman is determined to get her man, nothing will stop her. Note: The second book in the A Storm for All Seasons series is "Devlin Dynasty 2: Fall Fury". That story brings together characters from both series. A Storm for All Seasons - Spring Rain By Jaci Burton Book 4 in the Storm For All Seasons series. Kaitlyn Storm has loved Brett McGregor since she was seventeen, even before he pulled her into his arms and kissed her until she was breathless. But Brett pushed her away, not wanting to subject Kaitlyn to the demons inside him. Ten years later Brett is a widower with a dark secret he hides from everyone, especially Kaitlyn. He doesn't want her to get close, doesn't want to risk hurting her. Though he owns a prominent New Orleans art gallery, he no longer paints. Not since that black day six years ago when his wife died. And no matter how much Kaitlyn begs him, he won't paint her nude portrait, even though her lush body and sensual nature haunt his dreams at night. But Kaitlyn won't take no for an answer. She's determined to use all her powers of magic to convince Brett to start living and loving again, even if she has to seduce him while posing nude for a painting. And in the game of seducing the man she loves, Kaitlyn is relentless.

4 out of 5 stars Strong sensuality, good characters with a different twist .......2006-12-22

Deeply embedded within New Orleans culture is the famous Storm family--owners of beautiful hotels and community icons. They also share a variety of magical abilities, many having to do with the natural world or even the weather. The strongly sensual novel is really two complete books in one--each dealing with a season--Winter and Spring. Although
the characters are compelling, the emotional connection deep--this is not written for the faint of "sensual" heart. Feeling brave? Go for it and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book.......2007-08-08

This was a very touching story. At parts I could feel the tears forming in my eyes. It was definitely a page turner and I stayed up late just so I could see how God worked things out.

God is good and Vanessa shows it in her books. If you haven't read the rest of the "Rain" series books, you need to.

Vanessa's stories have me feeling God's love and has me wanting to share it with the world.

Thank you Vanessa for another dynamic book.

4 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - Let Go and Let God.......2007-07-29

In book four of Vanessa Miller's Rain Series, drug addicted Cynda Stephens is prostituting her body to make ends meet. Cynda leaves her daughter Iona in the care of her pimp and his wife. Meanwhile, Keith Williams, a born-again Christian, feels the Lord has chosen Cynda as the woman he is supposed to marry. When her pimp threatens to put Iona to work, Cynda does something unthinkable and finds herself in big trouble. Keith comes to her rescue and the two eventually marry. However, because of the hatred she feels for her deceased mother and the hand she's been dealt, Cynda no longer believes in God and is unable to love Keith back. Keith finds himself questioning the Lord because of the trials and tribulations he goes through while trying to reach Cynda. Will Keith go against God's will and just give up and suffer the consequences of his actions? Will Cynda realize the Lord will never leave her or forsake her and learn to love Keith with all her heart and soul?

RAIN STORM is Christian fiction at its best. Vanessa Miller has done a wonderful job creating a story to be enjoyed by all readers. Cynda and Keith both have endured a lot of pain and strife in their lives, and only by the grace of God will they find the strength to carry on. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and look forward to collecting the other books in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Rain Storm makes us remember God's unconditional love.......2007-07-08

I was so enthralled in Rain Storm. It really made me examine my own prayer life and daily devotions. I have to remember to Pray without ceasing for my friends and loved ones like Keith did in the book. Girl, the Reader's group discussion questions read like a Bible Study. The themes of unconditional love and forgiveness are penned so freshly. Bravo.

5 out of 5 stars Letting Him guide you through the storms of life!.......2007-06-20

First let me start by saying Vanessa you really have talent and as you continue to write books like this more people will come to the Lord and get to know Him. Please continue writing books as this nature...we need them and more authors like you!!!

This book bought tears to my eyes and made me mad...how could any woman not want Keith, A strong man in the Lord? When the Lord tells Keith to take Cynda, a whore, as his wife, at first he's confused and starts to have doubt but with the help of the Lord and His word he does what He commands and take her as his wife. Cynda has been through a lot, abuse, rape, and selling her body, just to name a few; not being able to grasp the love that Keith has for her she runs away a couple of times and even becomes pregnant...not by Keith but by a man unknown, in all this Keith still loves her and refuses to give up on her.

This is the type of love the Lord Has for us...even though this book is only fiction it gives real high sights of the love of the Lord and what He goes through just for the love us...people who doesn't deserves it. Not only did this display a story of love and forgiveness it also showed how man and woman are suppose to love each other...it tackled marriage values as well.

Pick up the book...you'll love it just as much as I did.

ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars God's Love.......2007-05-30

Some of the things we do in our lives lead us to believe that we are not deserving of God's unconditional love. Vanessa Miller has created a story that shows us, nothing done can ever keep us from the love we ought to and will receive from God. Rain Storm deals with the fight for love and forgiveness in the lives of four individuals that are different but yet the same.

Keith Hosea Williams prayed about finding his perfect woman, but the woman he had in mind was far from what God had in his plan. Keith was lead to a crack head, prostitute named Cynda Stephens, and of course he just knew that God was wrong. Keith struggled with God's decision and for every doubtful question he asked, God always had a strong reassuring answer.

Cynda had many demons, and did not believe that she was worthy of anyone's love. She stopped believing in God when her mother was killed. She hated that her mother did not protect her from the evils of the world and died leaving her alone. Cynda could not understand why God would send her a man like Keith. Always there for her, no matter how she treated him. She did not believe that he could be happy with her because she was a drug-using street walker.

Isaac loved his wife Nina. Even though he loved her he had cheated on her with Cynda, years before they married. The constant tormenting of Cynda made Nina run from Isaac, but he fought for her just the same. Once Isaac realized that he only wanted one woman, Cynda crossed him and betrayed him to the police. But the other thing she did to him was so unforgivable that even though he found the love of God while in prison, he still harbored hate for Cynda in his heart. Isaac dedicated his life to trying to bring God's glory and love to his friends from his past and any others walking down that same road of destruction. How could he help others when his heart was not totally clean from the things of the past? He preached of God's forgiving heart and love but he was still struggling with forgiving others.

Due to a tragic incident, Nina was told that she could never have any more children. That was what she prayed for most, to be able to give her husband another child. She kept the faith and believed that God loved her enough to give her another child. She would learn sometimes the things we want and the way we receive them is not always the way we planned, but how God wanted it.

Rain Storm is a fast-paced, page-turner, must read. I recommend this book to everyone, especially those that believe because of their past indiscretions and wrong doings they do not deserve to be loved or forgiven by God and the people around them that truly love them.

4 out of 5 stars Storm in a Rain Barrel by Anne Mather (Large Print Softcover).......2006-11-21

Description from the book back cover:

When her guardian and only relative, Great-Uncle Henry Farriday, died, Domine Grainger was rather daunted to learn that he had arranged for her to be looked after by the unknown James Mannering until she reached the age of eighteen. Still, that was only six months away, Domine consoled herself - not knowing that they were to be the most difficult six months of her life ...

        4 out of 5 stars Guardian Forever.......2001-12-21

This was a very sweet romance that I enjoyed. Young 17 year old Domine was orphaned at a very early age but was put through school by a rich old man who seemed to be fond of her. After he died, she had to leave her convent school and was thrust in the home of James, her new guardian. Although 20 years older than herself, she still found him very attactive, as he did her. But he fought his feelings for as long as possible, until neither could deny their love anymore. A pleasant story, although a bit boring and stale in places, and sometimes Ms. Mather was a bit hard to understand where she was going with some scenes and plot lines. But over all, I'd recommend it to anyone who likes romance of a lighter flavor.

          Book Description

"If you would like to have your heart broken, just come out here. This is the dust-storm country. It is the saddest land I have ever seen." These were the words of a reporter in 1936 after visiting the Great Plains of America. The 1930s were not a good time for most Americans, as the country was deep in the Great Depression. In the southern Great Plains region, times were especially bad. A severe drought struck the area and strong winds blew the dry topsoil into the air, creating tremendous storms of dust. The situation was so devastating, the region became known as the Dust Bowl. The Buckler family of Oklahoma were farmers who, like many in the region, depended on the land for their survival, so the Dust Bowl proved an especially harrowing time for them. Hoping for Rain tells the story of the three Buckler children and their experiences in the Dust Bowl. The book follows these children and their family through times of drought with no crops, into "black blizzards," and across the country to California where the eldest child, Earl, heads to find work and provide money for his family. Through letters and diary entries, the young Bucklers describe the disaster of the Dust Bowl. They tell of days filled with wishes for the storms to end and of hungry nights. Everything is covered with dirt-the floors, the beds, and even the food! After many months of battling the dust storms, the Bucklers are faced with a huge decision. Understanding that they can not be sure how long it will be until the rain comes again, they decide to move the family across the country. The Buckler's story becomes one of the many stories of the poor migrants who traveled west from the Plains in the mid- to late 1930s. Now these "Okies" face new challenges in the West, often depending on the federal government to help them through hard times. Back in Oklahoma, the dust storms continued on into the early 1940s, forever changing the face of farming in America. Like the others in the I Am American series, Hoping for Rain is illustrated with period drawings and photographs. Also included is a glossary.

          Book Description

Widowed architect Arthur Latimer has become a recluse in his own home: a storm-proof fortress that doubles as a shrine to his dead wife. But the outside world beckons in the form of a bizarre party downbeach.

Now, just as the biggest hurricane ever to hit the Pacific Northwest rolls in with deadly force, Art is subjected to intrusions from his past and invasions from the present. And soon he begins to doubt everything he sees or thinks he already knows. And soon you may too.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking thriller, written in a cool, modern style.......2005-08-16

This is a book full of plot twists and turns. I love the style of the narration. The narration is mostly third person, but every so often, the narrator offers an explitive that seems to come right from the gut of the main character, Art.

Schow includes a good deal of wit and attention to detail in the plot. Art's dog, Blitz is a german shepherd, who flunked out of police K-9 school, and now serves as Art's main companion. Schow's description of everyday dog behavior, intimating at the dog's underlying motives, is something any dog owner will instantly recognize and laugh along with.

But the real thrill in this book is in trying to unravel Art's story. Art is a recluse, living in a custom designed home on the northern California coast. The loss of Art's spouse figures prominently into Art's near total detatchment from the outside world. Art has vitually no human contact. Schow considers the possiblity that human contact for many is limited to a trip to the mall.

The book is a fairly quick read. Schow seems to have threaded the needle of keeping a fast-paced plot moving, while at times describing places and events in exquisite detail. He captures the vertigo feeling of drunken, drugged, and schizophrenic confusion in few words, yet the reader completely "gets it."

Like a drive along the northern coastal California roads near where the story occurs, you should buckle up, pay attention, and hang on--this book is a heck of a ride.

5 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting, but one hell of a ride.......2005-06-22

I seem to fall into this trap a lot: I pick up a book expecting one thing, and get another. Usually, I knock off at least one star when this happens, because the "preview" on the back of a book, coupled with the first chapter or two is (in my opinion) a promise to deliver something. Often, it does NOT deliver. The only reason I expected gore and such in Bullets of Rain is simply because I've read Black Leather Required, also by Schow. However, Bullets of Rain does not promise to include such, and so: my bad. Let me just say that Bullets of Rain is one of the most exciting novels I've read in a long time. It has great character development, and you THINK that you know the characters. But as you soon will find, nothing is always what it seems. I will not spoil the book, and thus, will take it no further than that. Something that the previews do advertise is suspense. And let me tell you this; this book has some serious suspense. It's very complex, yet very easy to read. Confused? It isn't easy trying to articulate what this book is all about without giving away too much. You like gore? You won't find it here. You like extremely talented writing with suspense that will keep you up way past your bedtime? Do yourself a favor and pick this book up at the first chance you get. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars I'll be looking for more from this guy.......2005-04-27

Every now and then I'll let myself be led to a writer by way of another writer's reviews. I had seen David Schow's name several times before, mostly in horror anthologies, but I had never read any of his works. Schow is billed as the father of splatterpunk, but don't let that deceive you. He may be the father of that sub-genre, but let me tell ya, he's a lot better--and a lot smarter--than any of that. I last encountered Schow's name in S.T. Joshi's "The Evolution of the Weird Tale," where Joshi (another of my favorite authors) wrote admiringly of Schow's work. So, based on Joshi's recommendation, I went looking for Schow's works. The only book of Schow's that I could find in the local used/new bookstore was Bullets of Rain, so this became my introduction to him. Bullets of Rain is billed as suspense, and that it is. Schow kept me locked in with his highly charged, action-packed story line. There's more here than meets the eye, though; much of the book is slam bang, but there's more going on beneath the surface. For one thing, the characters have some very interesting and poignant things to say about human relationships--so much so, in fact, that I took out my notebook and wrote down a few key phrases. What more can I say? Schow is a very bright light in what is often a dim field of literature. Check him out.

5 out of 5 stars DJS returns with a Streetsweeper...........2003-10-29

First off, David is a major talent with a vicious intelligence. With that in mind, do yourself a favor and pick up Bullets of Rain. The expanse of this novel is mindblowing, whether it be the complexities and intimacies of his characters, the atomic action, or the jaw dropping denouement. Imagine a literary Palahniuk, a violent and depraved Delillo...California's answer to Harry Crews. Drugs, guns, sex, and storms! And that's only the beginning of this face-punching novel. David's the real deal, the original Bad Guy Hat. So lock the doors, crack the seal on that fifth of whiskey, put on some Slayer, and jump into Bullets of Rain.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: Don't Read the Booklist Review!.......2003-10-26

As a selective reader of dark fiction, I was looking forward to Schow's return to the full length novel. I normally nurse his prose, absorb the characters, and take the time to speculate where this dark path goes. I've never been disappointed, and rejoice in his logical twists.

With BULLETS OF RAIN, I was captivated by the rich detail, character complexity, and storyline. Adding yet another facet to the scope of his expertise (a suspense novel), Schow skillfully transcends his genre reputation and hopefully will attract a broader audience with this offering.

I found myself reading this novel at a frantic pace.Unfortunately, the one break I took was to see if any reviews were posted on Amazon.

Lo and behold, the sole review (Elliott Swanson/Booklist), blew the twist while summing it up as a trite attempt only to be possibly appreciated by Schow's loyal following. I call it RETARD STRENGTH from a reviewer who just wants to drop something into a little slot, with the obligatory cross reference. Perhaps he should consider pitching sit-coms, or maybe he was frightened at a young age by an original idea.

Read the book, not the review.
