A Worthwhile Read for Any Multi-Family Real Estate Investor.......2007-09-30

I purchased and read this book after hearing an interview that talked about Ken's next book in the series--the more advanced version of this book. I've been a real-estate investor for some years and along with my two partners we own 1800 units in three western states. I've never before read an investment book that I didn't have some major disagreements with before reading this one. Actually, the only thing surprising to me was that Ken doesn't provide emergency lock-out service for his residents. We do, but many things in this business are counter-intuitive. I'd like to know his reasons. It's too bad he doesn't have a blog--and even though I'm not reviewing his personal website, he needs an update including downloads of the forms he promises to have available there in the book (they're still coming soon according to the web-site, but it's 3 years since the book came out).
There seems to be a lot of confusion among the reviewers as to who this book should appeal to. I think to all: from beginner to seasoned investor. Some who feel it doesn't address them in the reviews haven't paid attention. Buying single family homes and renting them is speculation. Small mom and pop rentals are also not investing any more than is flipping homes. I've watched these speculators come and go over the years--good luck to them they'll need it. Meanwhile if you're an ambitious 20 something who wants to go into real-estate who doesn't have the money, go to work for someone like me, or if you like more structure, for a large property management company and learn the business and you'll find lots of money available to you. If you're older, like I was, find some partners, take the risk and plan to work.
A saying I've always remembered is: Wise men learn from others' mistakes, fools from their own, and the rest just don't learn. I've always aspired to be at least a fool, but I wouldn't hesitate to learn from the mistakes of others. I recommend the book.

Need more concrete answers.......2007-08-02

Book is a good read, but I felt I needed more concrete answers to my questions. Maybe more strategies or specific steps to take in different scenarios.

I have found another book that answered my questions and had more strategies to share. Bubble Proof: Real Estate Strategies that Work in any Market by Tonja Demoff. Great read!

This book was an excellent primer in Investing in Real Estate. I was extremely pleased with the easy to understand material, and guidelines it provided me on the subject. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is serious about investing in real estate.

Need a serious laugh?.......2006-07-11

Of all of Nora Roberts' books--and yes, I've read them all--this is my favorite. It is undoubtedly her funniest. I first read it six years ago. I loaned it to a friend who forgot to return it, so I had to buy it again. I'm on my fourth copy now, I've read it probably ten times, but I keep on loaning it out and reordering and re-reading.

The characters are lovingly developed, and the dialogue quick and genuine.

Dora, our heroine, is a gutsy gal who takes no gruff off anyone, especially her new tenant, ex-cop Jeb Skimmerhorn. They're a recipe for great romantic sparks and hot sexual tension.

This is truly Nora at her very finest. I wish she'd write another just like it. Or almost like it!

Not the usual NR great read..........2006-04-14

I love library sales where I can go and scarf up the older hardback books by my favorite authors, which by the way, Nora Roberts happens to be just that...one of my favorites. But Nora sort of let me down on this one. And there are enough reviews about this book that I don't need to go into more plot description. Let me just say the first two chapters were a total bore to me because I don't need all the fancy description of antiques and paintings and jewelry. Actually, I could care less. So I felt a lot of the pages were filled with words that could have been left out, allowing the reader to get to the heart of the story. And if that had been the case, then I think this would have been a wonderful story. HOWEVER, I've said it before and I'll say it again. Roberts created a certain style of writing from the very beginning that set her apart from the rest as a great romance writer. And to those who've read enough of her earlier romance novels, then they know exactly what I'm talking about. This book didn't come across with that great Nora Roberts style of writing to me. Guess every book with this author's name on it can't be a 5-star, but she's still doing great.

Richly Rewarding.......2006-04-03

Actually, I would give this book 4-1/2 stars. Being a Nora-addict, I spend most of my reading time enjoying her many novels. This story brought me back to the Dream Trilogy where the girls opened the shop "Pretenses." Isadora Conroy is a young lady from a family of actors who decides that while acting is in her blood and enjoyable, she much rather run her antique shop. She and her sister partake on an buying trip, puchasing, unbeknownst to them, items that are a cover-up to several extremely valuable and very expensive original antiques, including an original Monet painting. Enter Jeddiah Skimmerhorn, rich, good looking and an ex-captain of the police force who is trying to sort out his own tragic loss of his sister while on the job; this event being the cause of his resignation from the force. Jed decides to leave the mansion he was raised in and go to a no-frills, comfortable apartment way of life where he plans on being able to live the life of a hermit. Dora, happy with life and very much the extravert, happens to be the landlord of the apartment he rents and this is where our story takes off. The characters are very entertaining and the story never lets your down. Dora's family, mom, dad, sister and kids are a very enjoyable and entertaining group. There is comedy, romance, intrigue and espionage. "Hidden Riches" is certainly a story worthy of reading.

I enjoyed this book. I enjoy romance books, but I cant stand to have them cheesy. I like a little romantic suspense, i don't like having everything a girl wants to read about being in one book all together and having it all predictable. If that makes any sense... But this book didn't have that as much, so I enjoyed it. I also enjoyed Dora and Jeds "words" between them. Sarcastic smart-assy remarks, I really enjoyed. They made me laugh and think how real life they could be.

A Practical, Down to Earth Commentary on Proverbs.......2005-07-14

Gloria Copeland has presented us with a well-researched, highly readable study on Proverbs. If you don't mind her views on healing and prosperity, you'll find this book a very good read. The cover and binding also makes for an attractive coffee table book, too.

The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs is more in-depth........1999-12-30

Gloria Copeland does a nice job exploring the themes from Proverbs and how they apply to your life in a practical way. One drawback is that she uses the King James Version as her primary starting point which is the hardest to understand and least accurate. However, in her commentary she does draw on the NIV and Amplified to make her points. For a more in-depth and scholarly study of Proverbs read THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERVBS by Cody Jones. The comments are interesting and very readable, and they put things into a historical setting. Jones picks out various characters from the Bible who illustrate the points of Solomon's wise and witty observations. He includes many historical photos to give the reader a sense of the culture of the time and includes 6 translations in parallel to aid understanding.

If you read only one book in the next year,may I suggest that this be the one.
This is a very astute book and anyone who spends a couple of hours reding it will get more benefit from it than anything else you could receive for the time spent.
This book is so good the rewards from reading it can come to a person in their teens,in their mid-life,in their retirement years,and that goes for someone with minimal or extensive education;successful or still struggling.
The book is loaded with comments from people of all walks of life and sayings that one can adopt to guide them in success and happiness.
A couple of sayings are indicative:

"You are the same person today as you will be five years
from now, except for two things:
The people you meet
and
The books you read."
"The man who does not read good books has no advantage over
the man who cannot read them."
I have been an avid reader as long as I can remember.At home we has a set of The Book of Knowledge,consisting of 24 large volumes.I devoured the whole set,and much of more than once,before I finished school.While in the Army ,one summer, I found "East of Eden" by John Steinbeck and by the end of summer ,I'd found and read all his novels.I have continued to read ever since and am now in my retirement years and read about 150 books a year.I have a personal library of about 7000 books and fully agree with the saying "So many books and so little time".
This love of reading has rewarded me throughout my life,and Hedges has beautifully covered the benefits of reading in this 'Gem' of a book.
I'd like to add a couple of my favorite 'book sayings' to the ones in this book:
"There is no frigate like a book,to take us lands away."
"Those who are happy enough to have a taste for reading need
never to be at lost for amusement."

Read and Grow Rich by Burke Hedges.......2005-08-07

Burke Hedges wrote the delightful little book on how one can grow rich and fulfilled by reading good books. He illustrates several excellent examples of wealthy people who credit their prosperity to a great idea that was picked from a good book. There are hundreds and thousands of books out there but the author cites some classics which from my own experience and reading, can attest to their greatness. These include inspirational/motivational books like Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie, The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz, The Strangest Secret by Earl Nightingale, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman Vincent Peale, Acres of Diamonds by Russell Conwell and The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino. The right book at the right time can make a huge difference to one's life.

The right book depends on one's goals in life. If in management, one needs to seek the right management books to be guided to success, such as management books by gurus like Peter Drucker. Many people complain of busy lives with no time for reading. However, the author shows that one only needs to spare about 15 minutes a day for reading and this can make a tremendous difference. He also gives tips about how one can read more effectively. From reading a good book, we can talk to great men and women who give us their valuable thoughts and insights.

Whole cultures have been changed by some compelling books. The author cites ten such books which most would agree that they changed the world to a significant extent. These include The Bible, writings by Greek philosophers like Plato, Socrates and Aristotle, The Magna Carta of 1215, The Gutenberg Bible, the 95 Theses by Martin Luther, the plays and sonnets by Shakespeare, the American Declaration of Independence (1776), the US Constitution and Bill of Rights, the Communist Manifesto and Hitler's MeinKampf (my struggle). No doubt, we can think of many more.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to enrich his/her life through reading. Remember that reading should be life long, not just to pass some examination.

I'm all for reading. A reading advocate for all seasons.

But this is a short book that can't even fill its short pages with any message more specific than: Reading Is Good Not Just Because Your Teacher Said So, But Because It Will Increase Your Chances Of Success In Life.

Really! What a surprise!

If you don't already know that, you ain't gonna be reachin' for this book in the first place.

P.S. I was hoping to, and still hope to, find a book linking certain books/magazines and certain reading habits with certain successful people, so as to draw conclusions as to the best things to read and the best reading habits to have if you want to "B" "E" "Successful" (or at least to pretend you have a chance).

Good "No-Holds Barred" approach to why one needs to read.......2000-06-25

The author talks about the importance of reading, and how it differs from simply watching TV or listening to the radio. Straight forward approach, with individual human examples, of how a person's life can change for the better by reading.

There is also an interesting comparison (that may even be eye-opening) between the people who choose to read and the people who know how to read and choose not to.

Read & Grow Rich.......2000-06-03

I believe this book, as simple as it is, to be a powerful book for people who want to bring about change in their lifes. For those who say "I don't have time to read", this book tells why they must choose to have time. It's the only way to change those thoughts in your head to new and different ones. Read Mr. Burke Hedges book! It will change your thinking.
