Warning Before reading put on your hater blockers!!!.......2007-07-16
This book was a great Read you have to love Trinity and Rio's relationship. The thing is that get's me is why didn't she and Rio move together instead of enduring years of her Father's sexual abuse? The Haters are coming at Rio and Trinity from everywhere I swear I got dizzy reading this story. This book was an over all great read but I don't know if I'll read another one of this author's book, it was way too emotional for me.
The King of Urban Street...HANDS DOWN!.......2007-07-01
This is my second read by K'wan and once again I was not disappointed! Kwan draws you in with his colorful characters and doesn't let you go until the last page. Street Dreams is about guy name Rio from the projects who starts off being just nickel and dime dealer from around the way, but when he's approached by Prince, the king of the streets..Rio's lifestyle quickly starts to change for the good for him. But when Prince's oldest son, Truck is released from prison all hell breaks loose out of jealousy.
I instantly fell in love with Trinity(Rio's girlfriend), Shamel(his longtime childhood friend), Sally(his Mom) and Cutty(another one of his friends). Street Dreams is by far one of the BEST books I've read in a long time! K'wan keeps you on the edge of your seat chapter after chapter and snatches your breath away at the very end!
Street Dreams is HIGHLY recommended for readers who love drama, suspense, action, love and edge of the seat writing all in one! (Hoodrat by him also comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!)
Keep'em coming K'wan!!!

Cool.......2007-03-21
This is a pretty neat book. It has great 'what you want to know' info about everything cultural, historical, environmental about the camino. I wish it wasn't so bulky - but there's just so much stuff to pack in there! My biggest complaint is that when you are just wading through it's a little hard to weed out what you want to read about from what you don't want to read about. But I guess that's no fault of the authors' since they can't read my mind. :) Great book w/ really cool info. Nice to read before you go - and you wish you could take it w/ you.
Book Description
It ought to be just a game, but basketball on the playgrounds of Coney Island is much more than that for many young men it represents their only hope of escape from a life of crime, poverty, and despair. In The Last Shot, Darcy Frey chronicles the aspirations of four of the neighborhood's most promising players. What they have going for them is athletic talent, grace, and years of dedication. But working against them are woefully inadequate schooling, family circumstances that are often desperate, and the slick, brutal world of college athletic recruitment. Incisively and compassionately written, The Last Shot introduces us to unforgettable characters and takes us into their world with an intimacy seldom seen in contemporary journalism. The result is a startling and poignant expose of inner-city life and the big business of college basketball.

Hoop Dreams.......2006-03-29
If you like hoops you would love this story. Darcey frey the author who's also a sports writter follows the life of three young men who's dream is to become professional basketball players.Living in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn these three men are faced with durgs violence, and everything you see on the streets of Brooklyn. A very inspirational story, and a indepth look on the career of Stephon Marbury. This is a book you would want to share with a friend.
Symphony of words.......2006-01-27
This book should be a classic, if it isn't already. As someone who hasn't a great deal of interest in basketball, I can throughly recommend it simply for the author's style. The man's prose reads like a dream as he brings the characters to life in an inimitable way. He enables you, the reader, to go right into the streets of New York and live the lives of each of his main characters, to get to know them, understand them and - in a sense - to *be* them. A definite must for your library.
Reality Check--I LOVED this book!.......2005-12-16
The book, The Last Shot, journeys into the streets of Coney Island in New York City, and into the lives of four young men aspiring to become basketball all-stars. These boys of Coney Island are Russell Thomas, Corey Johnson, Stephon Marbury, and Tchaka Shipp, all of whom are "to-be" high-school seniors with the exception of Stephon who is yet a freshmen. Corey, Stephen, and Russell live right in the Coney Island "projects", or districts, amidst the violent gangs, drug dealers, and drunks of New York. We learn that even the police are rarely seen in this area although a reason for that is never provided. It seems as if the only way for boys to focus on positive things is through basketball. Numerous basketball courts exist in the projects but one, in particular is important to these four boys called the Garden. Countless hours are spent on this court, practicing shots, dribbling, playing pick-up games, and organized tournaments. Also playing basketball for their high school Varsity team, these young men are recruited by a large amount of NCAA basketball coaches. They all have the potential to play college ball at Division One schools but how do they deal with the negative influences that surround them daily? Missing the required 700 point SAT score would mean, sadly their hopes and dreams of playing high-level college basketball would be shattered. This story reveals the riveting truth behind where many of our NBA all-stars originate from.

The Last Shot.......2005-10-21
The Last Shot
By. Darcy Frey
The Last Shot by. Darcy Frey takes place in the projects of Coney Island. All the characters are looking to go to a Division 1 Schools. They all have the talent but don't have the smarts to pass the SAT's. This book is a real page turner Darcy Frey is a very talented writer. I like how he actually uses an NBA superstar in this book. All the characters are great athletes. I like how it goes from Coney Island to the Nike basketball camp and follows the best player on the team Tchaka Shipp. There was no climax in this story. It shifts around so much that it couldn't really have a climax. Darcy Frey is a good sports writer. This book was rather long but it is worth reading. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.
For Any One Who Truly Cares.......2005-08-09
This book was the best written and best depicted book I have ever read. From the beginning it was raw and real. For any one who truly cares about and loves basketball this is a must read. This is as raw and real as it gets in the basketball world.
Book Description
The Moon came down on Milk Street, came down with a very soft sound.Shh-shhh, shh-shhhhh, in pieces on the ground.A compelling story with a strong message of community and togetherness When the moon suddenly falls on Milk Street, a little boy wonders, "Who will make it right again and set it in the air?" His question is soon answered, as firefighters, rescue workers, and the entire neighborhood of Milk Street come together to restore the moon in the sky. Jean Gralley's dynamic images and spare text brilliantly illustrate the power of the human spirit during difficult times. This is a story of community, comfort, and brave men and women everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
teamwork!.......2004-12-08
Late one night on Milk Street the moon falls from the sky! What should the people do? They all come together and work as a team to set in right in the sky! Everyone helps! The fire chief, worker dogs, rescue workers and citizens of the community work until the job is done!
The book teaches the values of teamwork, cooperation and sense of community to young children.
I would recommend this book to kids who are just learning to read on their own. The will enjoy the simple text. Only a few words are on each page making the book very easy for them to read in one sitting.
Who Will Help Make Things Right Again?.......2004-11-20
It's a Lunar 9-1-1 on Milk Street when the moon comes down-and it's up to everyone to help put it back in the sky. I discovered this book purely by accident while I was browsing the picture book section, but I'm glad I did-it's a beautiful little treasure for any childhood library.
In the urban setting of Milk Street one night, the moon comes down. And all the children come to help dressed as firemen and policemen, all eager to fix things. The text is very simple, perfect to be read to a very young child or read by a child just learning to read. In some ways the restful and gentle nature of the lyrical words reminds me of GOODNIGHT MOON, but the similarities end there. The warmly colored gouache and mixed media pictures are simply drawn, depending on a soft cartoon style rather than detailed-realistic. They work perfectly with the words and subject, creating an almost dream-like feel to this story. All the characters are children in their pajamas and animals, all running to help. This is a proactive tale, a positive story of an emergency that is solved by cooperation. And, by the time the children wish each other goodnight and go off to bed, readers know they well deserve their peaceful sleep.
This book tackles some important issues. Anyone familiar with what happened on 9/11 in 2001 will be quick to see similarities here. The pictures of children clothed in police and firefighter gear gathered in the street and all pitching in to help is an echo of similar images people saw after the events of 9/11. The moon dust on their pajamas even echoes the soot. But the reflection isn't brutal or dark; the similarities are gentle reminders-not scary. And the message is positive, and essential for children to hear. When an emergency happens, people will band together to help "set things right again." It teaches children a powerful lesson within a fairly gently told tale that will inspire hope, not fear.
This isn't a book about 9/11, of course. It can be read to cover many different traumatic events and emergencies. On the first page of the book, the author makes mention of Fred Rogers "when he was a child, if he ever came across a car accident or some other terrifying scene his mother would tell him, `Look for the helpers.'" And that's what this book is about. Helpers. It is a tribute to them, and an inspiration to a new generation of them.
I'd recommend this book for children anywhere from age 1-4, and especially for children who might be coping with fears or worries that this addresses. This is a remarkable little book and deserves some recognition for the beautiful art, musical prose and important message.
Happy Reading! ^_^ Shanshad

"Universities were built to give you knowledge, this book was written to GET YOU HIRED!" This book explains exactly what to expect when competing in the "real world." It will not waste your time with the traditional methods usually taught for pursuing a job. This book teaches exactly what you must do to separate yourself from the crowd. The strategies in this book have one objective: TO GET YOU HIRED!
Customer Reviews:
AWESOME book. A must for everyone, not just college student.......2001-07-26
This great book has taught me the value of being yourself and how TO land that perfect job. Matching your "I will" to your competitors "IQ" is a task that is sure to lean future employers into your direction. This book not only gives you step-by-step instructions to follow when getting ready for an interview, but also how to write a resume, and possible interview questions that you will be asked but more importantly, those that you should ask! Also, this book shows you competitive ways to overpower the competition in job interviews, to set yourself apart from the rest of the pack including those with more experience, qualifications, etc. You too can land that perfect job with a little help from James and his book. I used James techniques to help me to be elected to an elite board of directors that normally takes 2-3 generations to be involved with, but I did it in less than 6 years. I have also used these techniques to help me be awarded thousands of dollars in college scholarships, just by following a few simple tasks. This book is awesome, not to mention Jame's motivational speaking events. James is a talented individual and he is putting his talent to work in today's society. He will stop short of nothing to achieve his goal and he will help you to accomplish YOUR goals. This book is a must for anyone looking to land their dream job, not just college students. An enthusiastic TWO-THUMBS UP!!
Spectacular Book!.......2000-02-07
James Malinchak has put together a great source of information for anyone on the search for a career. The inspirational quotes were especially helpful to me every day. Malinchak's use of his own personal experiences makes every page very accessible to readers. I love this book!
Great book.......2000-02-07
This book should be read by all college students preparing to enter the real world. It will give you strategies that will help you land the job of your dreams. The book is easy to read and the author does a great job of relating to students.
Enough appetizers, this is the main course!.......2000-01-25
As a college professor and education consultant, I've read many career-focused books for the "college student." And most are good, but all of them fall short of Mr. Malinchak's "nuts-and-bolts-think-outside-the-box-here's-how-to-REALLY-do-it" book of strategies and ideas. He not only gives you information you WON'T find in other student-focused books, he speaks from experience. What a concept...an author who has actually DONE was he writes about in his book. This book breathes integrity, and it doesn't hold back on any punches. This book is good food without the fluff and fillers. I've recommended this book to all of my students, and I will continue to do so until someone can show me one that's better. Way to go James, it's about time someone let the SECRET out!
A Must Read for All College Students.......2000-01-25
WOW! James Malinchak's book, From College to the Real World delivers an insider's step-by-step action plan on how to go out and grab that dream job.
If you are serious about making a future that is meaninguful, exciting and successful, then you must read this book!

NEVER sleep again!!.......2007-09-01
This is the one of the many books of the Fear Street series, and it's really good. Fear Street is a series about scary and/or supernatural events that happen to teenagers in a ficitional town called Shadyside. In this book, an attractive swimmer moves into a run down house on Fear Street after her dad dies. She and her sister are a lways at each other's throats competing over everything, and when a beautiful antique bed is left in the house, they fight over it as well. However the sister who gets it is soon plauged by disturbing nightmares and weird things happening to her at every turn. This has a pretty good twist ending and gives a good taste of future books in the series.Pulitizer material it's not, but for young teens, or anyone wanting a quick thrilling read, this suits the bill just fine.
Don't read before bed.......2007-05-11
I read a lot of R.L books and loved almost all of them. This book was no exception. It had a great plot line great cliff hanger great everything. And the ending like all R.L Stine books was a twist. If your looking for a suspense book i would highly recommend this book
Sweet dreams Maggie..........2006-12-04
This was my first Fear Street book I read and it scared me! I was scared of going to sleep! If I would have a dream that would keep repeating I would stop sleeping! But I love this book anyway.
Sweet dreams...
Interesting.......2006-08-10
I liked this book, I thought the idea was original-having bad dreams about girl being killed in your bed.
I don't really get scared by RL Stine's books, but I have to admit, it was kinda creepy. I like how he describes how Maggie is trying to fall asleep and it's scary. We all can relate to that. I know sometimes when I'm trying to fall asleep, and I hear noises outside, it freaks me out.
The ending is kinda hard to believe for me, but I still never really saw it coming. Well I like the way he ended it, because I hate when the killer turns out to be a ghost or a vampire or something like that. this way, it was more realistic.
bad dreams.......2006-03-17
My book "bad dreams" is about a girl named Maggie Travers who is moving into a new house with her mom and her sister, Andrea, and her dog Gus. ever since her father died they became very poor and had to move to a house on Fear Street Ave. they get to their new house and as maggie gets inside depressed because of the move. she walkes to her room and inside she sees a beautiful canopy bed. she calles her mom and her sister in to see the new bed mom andrea! maggie shouted come in here quick hurry!as they walk in her sisters jaw drops in jealousy. her sister Andrea was always extremly jealous of maggie because she was much better at everything. maggie pleaded her mom to let her keep the bed. her mom says yes and maggie is very happy. that night maggie goes to sleep and while she is sleeping she has terrible dreams of a girl getting tourcherd and stabed by someone. maggie has these dreams every night and stars to wonder if she is having these dreams as a warning that something bad is going to happen.
This book is just really to scare you it doesn't have a message it is just a thrilling story. i think other kids reading this will think it is a great book and will be looking farward to readin the rest of the R.L Stine books.
my oppion on this book is that it is very saspenceful and thrilling. Other kids reading this book will think it is a great book and will want to keep reading. and im planning on reading the rest of his great books.
the author did a very good job writing this book. he made it so that you want to keep reading it is vey thrilling a saspence ful and i hope he writs more in the future.

Part memoir and part travelogue, The House on Dream Street offers a compelling glimpse into Vietnam more than 20 years after the war. Author Dana Sachs foregoes the history lesson and instead takes us into the day-to-day lives of working-class people attempting to succeed in a fledgling capitalist economy. Captivated by the once-forbidden country during a visit in 1989, Sachs returned two years later, took a room with a young family, and set out to immerse herself in the culture.
One of the most charming aspects of the book is that Sachs lacks the bravado you'd expect from a solo traveler. Her slow grasp of the language causes no end of frustration, and her Western looks--"bigger, paler, and richer"--make her an object of unwanted attention. Other facets of crowded Hanoi prove equally challenging: maneuvering a bicycle through dangerously narrow streets, fending off the frequent advances of married Vietnamese men, and coping with the complete lack of privacy as well as the elusive Vietnamese concept of destiny. Despite the often-primitive conditions, the watchful eyes of the secret police, and the intolerable, mildewy weather, Sachs manages to portray her newfound home as an explosion of sensory experience, where "the rich, woody scent of freshly steamed rice" fills the air and "commuters whizzed past... their bright clothes trailing pink, orange, purple, and green across the blue-black asphalt of the road." And then there are the people: Tung, her friendly but on-the-make landlord who loves heavy metal; Huong, his critical but loyal wife who harbors untold hidden strengths; Tra, desperate to return to the States and get her doctorate, even at the expense of her marriage; and Linh, also yearning to escape her husband's tight reins. In fact, most of the women with whom Sachs bonds are torn between their family obligations and a dawning realization of their own rights.
Even as her friends struggle to balance personal goals with marital happiness, Sachs finds herself drawn to Phai, a quiet, inexperienced motorcycle mechanic. Their love affair, illegal and unspoken, flames steadily and then flickers out, as the author finds herself unable to overcome their differences and the prospect of marrying into Phai's impoverished family. In the end, she realizes her love for Phai is only a personification of her romance with the country itself--but it's as a chronicle of that romance that The House on Dream Street truly succeeds. In telling the story of her own discovery and growth, Sachs provides a distinctively personal view of a rapidly evolving country as well as the families who are weathering the transition. --Lisa Costantino
Book Description
In this heartfelt memoir, Dana Sachs takes the reader on a sensual and textured voyage to a country most Americans think about only in terms of war. A finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award, this deftly written narrative reveals how Sachs settled in with slick, warmhearted Tung and his quietly tenacious wife Huong in Hanoi and made a place for herself in “enemy” territory. With vivid descriptions of the community—the noodle stalls and roaring motorcycles, the vestiges of French colonialism, and the encroachment of glittering high-rises—Sachs explores the tenuous balance between the traditions of old Vietnam and a country in the throes of modernization. Sachs’s honest depiction of her difficulties renders her triumphs and love for the country and its people all the more poignant and compelling. This edition includes a new afterword by the author.

I agree! It's Wonderful!.......2007-07-30
I can't add anything to the other reviews other than to say that if you enjoy reading about westerners living in Asia you will like or love this book. You should also read "Catfish and Mandala" which comes from a totally different perspective, but is also memorable.
talented writer, engaging commentary.......2007-05-15
i loved every minute of reading this book. i was captivated by ms. sachs' tales of coming to terms with her discomfort in a very foreign environment where communication was almost impossible. her writing is clear and expressive and personal. i look forward to reading her next book, and hope that there are more to come.
More Vietnamese Than Vietnamese.......2006-09-08
Her writing style is so playful, amusing, charming, and sensitive. Her observation of the environment and culture is so acute. She brought alive the scenes, the sounds, the liveliness of Hanoi streets -- just like the classic Vietnamese novels that we had to read while in high school. I bought this book for my wife, previewed it and then finished it. Highly recommended.
Mind-blowingly good!.......2003-10-11
This is simply one of the most stupendous travelogues I have ever read. In fact, I can't think of a better one. Read it!
Sensitive, moving.......2003-10-02
This book is a moving and real account of one woman's travel journey in Vietnam. But, it could be anywhere. The respect and heart she has for where she is is wonderful. It's a quick and moving read.

Favorite Book.......2007-03-31
My 18 month old daughter LOVES this book. She has carried it around everywhere since she got it for her 1st birthday. The pictures are adorable and the songs are cute too. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because the cardboard edges were not sturdy and can off. But that was after six months of being taken everywhere and read a million times.
Concept is good, design is flawed..........2006-11-13
The art and text is great, as is the electronics, don't get me wrong, most everything from CTW is good when it comes to that. The only problem I have is with the construction of the book. It's obvious that the person who put this together never raised a child. The electronics unit is not placed, as with most if not all other books of this type, on the very outside, with the book next to it, but surrounded by the pages. This wouldn't be so bad if the unit were smaller, but it stretches for nearly the entire height of the book. The edges of the pages, opposite the spine, are held on to the main part of the page by only very small sections of cardboard (see pictures). When I gave it to my energetic toddler, the pages (and the front cover!) were quickly folded back at the top and bottom of the electronics unit where the cardboard is the weakest, and I have no doubt that with further manhandling (toddler-handling?) they will start to tear. Either that or I'll just cut them off myself.

You will enjoy this idea packed book! Every picture is beautiful and inspiring! Mix and match the ideas, they don't all have to come from one home. Floor plans included, with builder and interior design resources given. Street of Dreams website (www.streetofdreams.com) tells you locations of when they will be in your neighborhood. A must see!
Does not Disappoint!.......2000-07-02
If you can't find your dream home in this book, it may not exist in any book! While it only contains 50 plans, every one is beautiful and unique. Each home is covered in four or more pages, with color photos of the front and back of the home, inside, and of course, the floor plans. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a luxury home to build. Each one has many details and there are homes ranging from 3,000 to almost 10,000 square feet. I have had a hard time trying to find plans for homes over 5,000 square feet, and a majority in this book fit that description. I wish I could find more like it.

Book Description
Winner of the Tupelo Press Editors' Prize
This is flawless poetry from a fearless poet with perfect pitch, whether she is writing whimsy or elegy. Melanie Almeder's poems span myriad locales and themes without ever losing sight of the author's goal: to enlighten, arouse, irk, and amuse. She is graceful and musical as she spins an "Ode to Peterson's Guide to Birds," and yet profoundly articulate as she intuits language from the paintings of Chagall-this, in a thoughtful and distinctive series of poems concerning eminent works of painting and photography.
Contemporary philosophy, autobiography, and the landscapes of Florida and Maine are all rendered between these pages, but there is an underlying unity and wisdom to her vision that will manipulate, surprise, and edify her readers as they are led into her lyrically rich yet subtly nuanced landscapes. A singular debut from a compellingly inventive new voice that cannot, and will not, be ignored.
Melanie Almeder was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and southern Maine. She received her BA in English from the University of Virginia, MFA in poetry from the University of Massachusetts, and PhD in contemporary fiction from the University of Florida. Her poems have been widely published in a range of journals, including
The Georgia Review, Poetry, Five Points, Seneca Review, The Comstock Review, and
American Literary Review. She has been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize. Almeder currently teaches contemporary literature at Roanoke College.
