Book Description

Is it still possible to believe in miracles in our modern world? After surviving a life-threatening bout with breast cancer, Sandy Johnson, author of the critically acclaimed The Book of Elders, undertook a personal quest to find out. She sought out the most powerful, authentic spiritual healers across the globe and allowed them access to her own body and heart, to find out who truly had the power to heal and who dealt simply in illusion. Through her own experience and countless interviews with fellow patients, the author provides a glimpse into this world. Among the astounding healers she encountered on her journey: -A 48-year-old furniture maker who can cure the flu over the phone -An En-glishman whose fingers radiate pink light during healing sessions -A Brazilian who, with no anesthesia and an unsterilized knife, has cured patients of cancer, blindness, arthritis, and brain tumors -A musician who can mend broken bones and heal spinal problems

4 out of 5 stars A HEALING POTPOURRI.......2007-08-30

Johnson has accumulated a number of fascinating stories regarding healers whose patients are actually healed. Their modalities are pretty far out, but who is to say that God must be stereotyped? I enjoyed all of the stories and having once been a program director for a holistic health center, I can attest that there is plausibility in all of these stories. Over the years and from my experiences and research, a healer is only a conduit. The patient actually heals him/her self. It is written: "It is done unto you as you believe." If the modality of healing is accepted by the patient, then the patient is healed. If the sickness re-occurs, then doubt and fear was allowed to come in. It is not the healer who failed, it is the lack of acceptance. The traditional medical modalities are rife with physicians who tell a patient they have only so many months, years to live and this is in effect, condemning the patient to death if the patient accepts the verdict. Medical schools have no idea about true healings. Pharmaceuticals are not the answer. Bettye Johnson, award-winning author, Secrets of the Magdalene Scrolls.

3 out of 5 stars interesting but limited.......2007-04-19

I am glad that Sandy Johnson wrote this book. It is engaging, interesting reading. But it is a bit thin, which is frustrating. It would be a better book if she had gone into more depth about each healer. Nevertheless, I am glad she has written what she has. The more information about extraordinary people like these, the better.

5 out of 5 stars Very inspirational book!.......2003-09-13

This book left me with a wonderful feeling, and opened my mind to some of the real healings that are possible if we only seek them out.

5 out of 5 stars A behind the scenes look into the world of healers.......2003-07-20

I just about gulped down Sandy Johnson's latest book, "The Brasilian Healer with the Kitchen Knife". I couldn't put it down once I'd opened the covers. Clearly the author made an amazing internal and external journey in order to write the book. She gives the reader a "behind the scenes" look into the world of healing and healers. Any skeptic who reads the book may well question his/her belief system, yet the writer was even handed in covering the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Profiles of Sixteen Holistic Healers.......2003-07-12

Sandy Johnson describes her magical journey around the world to meet and be treated by a variety of holistic healers in THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE. Disillusioned to discover that traditional medical doctors offered only the vaguest assurances that her breast cancer would probably not recur, Johnson felt inspired to seek out healers who consider all aspects of an individual (not just the physical) when they heal. Beginning with tips Johnson received from the Native Americans she'd interviewed for her previous book, Johnson discovered a wonderfully diverse group of healers working with shamanic soul retrieval, alchemy, intuition, yoga, Kahuna, Australian Aboriginal, chiropractic, water, musical, and psychic surgery methods.

THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE is so fascinating and well-written that I found it impossible to set down, as Johnson devoted a chapter to each of sixteen gifted healers. Here are healers who can see inside peoples' physical and energy bodies with ease -- at times performing miraculous healings. Photos are shown of most of the healers, including one woman healer who comes out of her healing trances to find gold-like metal flakes on her body, an Aboriginal man who works with "love, light, crystals, and energy," and men who remove cancerous lumps and cataracts from their patients -- often with nothing more than a kitchen knife.

Johnson's open-minded skepticism is refreshing; even as she feels certain she's gone "down the rabbit hole," she retains her journalistic common sense and composure to ask these healers how they heal. The healers Sandy Johnson visited include: Sandra Ingerman, Katie Engelhart, Howard Wills, Vianna Stibal, Virginia Ellen, Milton Trager, Gary Brownlee, Auntie Margaret, Warren Barigian, Gerry Bostock, Dr. Ruth Ziemba, Peter Maxwel, Rubens Faria, and John of God.

Whether you are considering enlisting aid from a holistic healer, or are just curious to read stories that prove truth is stranger than fiction -- THE BRAZILIAN HEALER WITH THE KITCHEN KNIFE will satisfy and delight. I give this book my highest recommendation.

Best known for her Lord Peter Wimsey mysteries, Dorothy Sayers was also a playwright, essayist, and a translator of Dante. C.S. Lewis said that he liked her "for the extraordinary zest and edge of her conversation--as I like a high wind." The reader gets a fair taste of that wind in this book, her study of the human (and divine) creative process. Beginning with some stingingly humorous words for the education process (which has produced, she says, "a generation of mental slatterns") she then explores the Trinitarian nature of creativity. Here she identifies the Christian concept of the Holy Trinity--God, Son, Holy Spirit--with three elements of creation. First, the Idea: "passionless, timeless, beholding the whole work complete at once, the end in the beginning"; then the Creative Energy: "begotten of that idea, working in time from the beginning to end," manifesting the Idea in matter; and finally the Creative Power: "the meaning of the work and its response in the lively soul"--in essence, what she calls "the indwelling Spirit."

In a plain, matter-of-fact style that readers will recognize from her mysteries, she reflects on the question of free will and miracle, evil, and, ultimately, "the worth of the work." It is especially here, I think, in this final chapter that the book remains both timeless and profoundly timely. The artist stands for the true worker, she writes, who, while requiring payment for his work, as an artist "retains so much of the image of God that he is in love with his creation for its own sake." So too, ultimately, should it be for all human work: "That the eyes of all workers should behold the integrity of the work is the sole means to make that work good in itself and so good for mankind. This is only another way of saying that the work must be measured by the standard of eternity." --Doug Thorpe

Book Description

This classic, with a new introduction by Madeleine L'Engle, is by turns an entrancing mediation on language; a piercing commentary on the nature of art and why so much of what we read, hear, and see falls short; and a brilliant examination of the fundamental tenets of Christianity. The Mind of the Maker will be relished by those already in love with Dorothy L. Sayers and those who have not yet met her.

A mystery writer, a witty and perceptive theologian, culture critic, and playwright, Dorothy Sayers sheds new, unexpected light on a specific set of statements made in the Christian creeds. She examines anew such ideas as the image of God, the Trinity, free will, and evil, and in these pages a wholly revitalized understanding of them emerges. The author finds the key in the parallels between the creation of God and the human creative process. She continually refers to each in a way that illuminates both.

5 out of 5 stars The Masterful "Mind of the Maker".......2007-10-05

If you are interested in an airtight, supremely reasoned, brilliantly explained, and determinedly impersonal description of what Christians state in their creeds, this is the book for all time. Beware, Unbelievers...**

**Of all the silly things written in the name of "atheism," probably the silliest is that God is the product of our minds. Well, duh.... How are we to know God except through our human minds? How are we to describe God except through our language and actions? It's only a question of which came first - God or the human capacity for an idea of something greater than ourselves who must have created us. I am infinitely more interested in the thoughts and writings of those who have studied and labored over a subject for all of their lives and built on the ideas of those who have done the same since the beginning of self-conscious thought. I am bored to tears with the ravings of those who just can't accept as the result of, say, several weeks - or a lifetime - of intermittent, random thoughts that there is something greater than themselves and with rules that go along with this being. So, on the grounds of depth, completeness, longevity, and logic, I prefer "The Mind of the Maker" not only to anything ever written denying God but to all other books about God.

5 out of 5 stars INSIGHT.......2007-03-20

She had an amazing insight to what the Christian life is all about. A worth while read.

5 out of 5 stars Thinker's Classic.......2007-03-17

The Mind of the Maker by Dorothy Sayers is a classic for a reason. She is an excellent writer and a wonderfully deep thinker. At times I honestly got lost in the depths but, as I look back, the truths and nuggets of "ah ha"s are worth a few head scratches.

She opens the book explaining that it is not an explanation or a defense of the Christian faith. The book is her attempt to "demonstrate that the statements made in the Creeds about the Mind of the Divine Maker represent, so far as (she is) able to check them by (her) experience, true statements about the mind of a human maker." (preface) There is a universal truth found in the act of someone who creates and the Creator of all things.

She explains how Father, Son, and Spirit can be well understood by the creative mind's "Idea", "Energy", and "Power". She mainly focuses on the illustration of the writer (her occupation and obviously greatest experience). The essential nature of an idea working its way with the energy of a person writing with its connected power that is released is an incredible thought. I've been meditating on it often.

Many times, as a follower of Christ, I focus on "just" one aspect of our God: the Father or Son or Spirit. I too often miss and do a vast injustice to Him as I do not focus on the eternal relationship that they all together forever work. Sayer has given me a new way of remembering and reflecting on my Love and Hope which has affected me.

I believe that being creative can be a spiritual discipline. This book will be my "proof text". We are most like our God when we exhibit his love and work in a finite yet glorious way while we create something. Be it a new song, photograph, painting, story, etc. Hmm, maybe even creating another blog entry... a bit.

I highly recommend The Mind of the Maker even if you can't run through it, it is worth a slow soak. Don't be afraid to put it down and ponder. This book isn't for the "fast food" reader but it is accessible to all.

5 out of 5 stars A glimpse of God, but a full-dress study of Man.......2005-12-05

Contrary to popular belief, this is not primarily a book about God. Sayers wisely does not try to tell us about God directly, but about what is godlike in ourselves. 'The characteristic common to God and man,' she says, is 'the desire and ability to make things.' She draws a vivid and detailed analogy between the Christian Trinity and our own creative imagination. In working out the details of this analogy, she tells us a great deal about them both; but, inevitably, more about our own minds than God's.

The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit correspond to what Sayers calls the Idea, Energy, and Power. For a writer, the Idea is the book as he first imagines it; the Energy is the book as actually written; the Power is the impression it makes in the mind of each reader. The analogy applies equally well to all art forms. Sayers makes the Trinity seem as plain and familiar as a conversation. If you ever knew what you wanted to say but couldn't find the words, you felt the difference between the Father and the Son. If someone took your words to mean something you never intended, you felt the distance between the Son and the Spirit. Critics may say the Trinity is not real, but they can never again call it incomprehensible.

The rest of the book concentrates on the purely human maker. The longest chapter, 'Scalene Trinities', discusses the ways that the creative imagination can go wrong, and classifies them as failures of the Idea, the Energy, or the Power. I find this the most useful part of the book. Whatever kind of work we do, we find it all too easy to become obsessed with technical details (the Energy). We almost forget that we are trying to express an Idea, and so our work loses the Power to benefit other people. We need to be fully aware of all three parts of the process.

The Mind of the Maker is a brilliant book. But if you read it just for its theology, you will miss two-thirds of the brilliance. It has still more value as a guide to human creativity. If you are a Christian, or if you do any kind of creative work, this book will do your mind good.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Insights.......2004-12-30

Sayers starts with the orthodox concept of the Trinity and suggest that the mind of man as creator is analogous. By examining the mind of man as creator and the work he creates, we can acquire a better understanding of the Holy Trinity. While this might seem outlandish at first, it works! When you think about theological concepts just as concepts, they can be very hard to grasp. But Sayers uses concrete examples to illustrate theological concepts, and avoids the temptation to overextend her analogy. She concentrates mainly on the writer-creator, since she herself is a writer. Her insights on the creative process of writing are almost as interesting as the light they shed on the nature of God. These insights go well beyond the concept of the Trinity--she offers an interesting perspective on the existence of evil, free will, and much more. I've never read anything like this.

5 out of 5 stars This has all that you need to learn astrology.......2004-04-01

This book has a fault, I'll start off with that. When describing the aspects, it describes Postivie Aspects and Negative Aspects. There are five major aspects: Conjunction (neutral), Trine and Sextile (positive), and Square and Opposed (negative). I do like having Conjunction listed separately at least. Most astrology texts lump the positives and lump the negatives, but leave the conjunction as a separate category.

Beyond that, this book does have all the formulae you need to assemble a chart. You will need an ephemeris for planetary positions, and a house table (...) for the house cusps, but those are just the input numbers. This book tells you how to crunch the numbers.

More importantly, this book tells you a lot about interpretation, even with what it leaves out. Dividing the chart up into roughly 20 categories, it helps the astrologer determine which parts of the chart are relevant to which topic. That is a very central point, very necessary, very useful, and has become the foundation of my astrology.

5 out of 5 stars This is the real Only Astrology Book You'll Ever Need.......2002-02-05

Llewellyn has made a living from publishing books that are pertinent to the field of astrology and tarot, and this book is no different. This is every astrologer or wanna-be astrologer's must have! I keep it right next to my Devore Encyclopedia on my desk. Written in almost a dictionary-esque format, this book gives the reader simple and informative answers to every possible word associated with astrology. Combine that with a wonderful step by step lesson in learning astrology...this is truly the only astrology book you'll ever need.

5 out of 5 stars Star Light -- Star Bright !.......2001-08-10

One of the best books on the subject. Something for every level of knowledge. Admittedly more informative to beginners because of the extremely simple way the information is set up. There are literally thousands of delineations to choose from as you learn A-L-L about Astrology. You can literally open the book cover and go from complete ignorance to almost expert long before reaching the other cover. There is VERY little "fat" or nonsense in this book. It's the Joe Friday of Astrology books: "Just the facts Ma'am!"

The only reason for one to buy any other book would be to further the exploration of all you may glean from reading this one. An expert may want more wordy dissertation about any of the hundreds of astrological subjects introduced to the reader. But, that is what makes this ideal for beginners and intermediate astrologers. Those who want to de-mystify the mumbo jumbo they usually hear from those in the know would do well to drink from this fountain first. They will be amazed at how much sheer knowledge is shared on every page. And, it is all crystal clear but concise and to the point. You can't go wrong with this one!!

5 out of 5 stars The only astrology book you'll ever need........1999-04-04

The A-Z Horoscope Maker book has all the information you need to become a proficeint astrologer. This is a book you will use as a reference for your whole career. It was written in 1910, back when must astrologers had a darker outlook. This book does has a doom and gloom feel to it with the harsh interpretations and meaning. The moderen astrologer knows to modify the pessimistic meanings and look on the brigher side of things. A total understanding of this book will make you into a confident astrologer after following the examples in the A-Z book. This is one of the few books that teach you how to read a chart and what it all means. For the $15 price, this book will be a constant lifetime companion, I think of it as one of the bibles for astrologers. This book is the real deal,no sun sign cheese or generalizations here. This book contains the precise calculations and math formulas needed to do charts by hand, something that many moderen astrologers have forgotten. If you want to become an astrologer you'll need this book!

Book Description

Embracing the Witch and the Goddess is a detailed survey of present-day feminist witches. It examines the attraction of witchcraft for its practitioners and explores witches' rituals, views and beliefs about how magic works. The book provides a detailed portrait of this undocumented section of New Zealand society and compares the special character of New Zealand witchcraft with its counterparts in the United States, Great Britain and Australia. Kathryn Rountree traces the emergence and history of feminist witchcraft and links the craft with the contemporary Goddess movement. She reviews scholarly approaches on the study of witchcraft and deals with the key debates which have engaged the movement's adherent and their critics, and ultimately presents what Mary Daly declared was missing from most historical and anthropological research on witchcraft: a "Hag-identified vision."

This is a terrific ethnography of feminist Witches in New Zealand, and will be of interest to anthropologists, feminists, and pagans alike. If you have an interest in the pagan community of New Zealand, this book will provide you with an excellent snapshot of a large part of that community. If you are a feminist Witch wanting to share information with family or friends, this book will help. It is clearly written and easy to read, while sticking to the standards of scholarly anthropology. I very much enjoyed it, and will read anything else Ms Rountree publishes.

1 out of 5 stars outdated... take it with a grain of salt .......2005-02-20

this was my first "advanced" astrology book -- and it took some kind words from an experienced astrologer and a few more modern books to undo the damage that it did.

llewellyn's work is very important, and some of his ideas and theories are still valid today, however llewellyn lived in a very different time than we do. the issues of his time were different and therefore these dilienations are very old-fashioned and fatalistic. for example, using this book, i learned from my chart my husband is at risk of drowning. (my mars in cancer.) and i have liability to accidents by falling or falling objects. (saturn square urenus.) there was also a warning about being beheaded somewhere in there. a little scary, but mostly silly and impractical!

for the budding modern astrologer i would wholeheartedly recommend "the inner sky" by steven forrest, "astrology, karma, & transformation" by stephen arroyo, and "astrology for the light side of the brain" by kim rogers-gallagher. much more modern.. less scary.... and much more practical!!!!!

Much of what is written about Lacan remains difficult to read and understand. It would appear that many of the writers are attempting to be Lacan themselves. However, this book by Danny Nobus is an exception. The writing style is clear and concise and although many areas of Lacan's work is not considered what is is helpful and well thought out. What is unique about this volume is that the work is considered in the context of clinical practise and the application of Lacan's theories in comparison/contrast to other forms of psychoanalytic thinking. A good book to own and re-read as necessary.

      Book Description

A revealing look at the influences and aspirations of today's hottest filmmakers

A new era has dawned in Hollywood, with a wave of innovative filmmakers redefining the art of big-screen entertainment for modern audiences. Entertainment journalist Josh Horowitz provides an in-depth look at twenty directors on the leading edge through a series of candid interviews.

Horowitz covers a full range of styles and sensibilities—revealing both the points of agreement and the sharp distinctions among this eclectic group:
      • Kevin Smith's do-it-yourself aesthetics in Clerks and Chasing Amy
      • Michel Gondry's surreal dreamscapes in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
      • Trey Parker's love of fart jokes in South Park
      • How Jon Favreau's teenage obsession with Dungeons & Dragons helped make Swingers
      • Todd Philips' journey from documentary filmmaker to box-office success with Old School

4 out of 5 stars Review from Arizona Daily Star.......2006-03-23

Budding filmmakers looking for inspiration should check out Josh Horowitz's interview anthology, "The Mind of the Modern Moviemaker: 20 Conversations With the Next Generation of Filmmakers" (Plume, $15).
Horowitz, a writer and TV producer, takes a simple concept - sit down with some of cinema's emerging directorial greats - and elicits eloquent, investigative pieces that truly provide glimpses into some fascinating storytellers.
Interviewing the likes of Michel Gondry, Kevin Smith, Richard Kelly and Neil LaBute, Horowitz has each filmmaker explain his big break, work process and philosophy. He asks surprisingly blunt questions, querying the subjects about significant failures and insecurities.
The author isn't in search of an overwhelming zeitgeist. The interviewees emerge as disparate personalities, all after distinct goals. Brett Ratner ("Rush Hour," "X-Men 3"), for instance, proves to be a business-oriented company man who cares most about making money, while Smith ("Clerks," "Chasing Amy") seems to be content with catering to his small yet devoted audience with his uncompromising fare.
The book is an excellent specimen of entertainment journalism, and the thoughts, hopes and fears expressed by the directors in the book will make for just as interesting a read 10 years from now, when some will be giants while others will surely have faded into obscurity.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-02-18

This book is a really good book! My only complaint is that he had to cut some of the interviews down. The book is really well constructed and has a lot of interesting interviews which show you how hard it really is to get into the moviemaking industry. My favorite interviews were Richard Kelly and the Weitz twins. As an aspiring film maker, I recommend this to anyone who wants to go into the movie business or anyone who likes movies. It's really like getting a back stage pass into the lives of some of today's hottest directors.

      Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the next generation.......2006-02-16

I really enjoyed this book. There are some new filmmakers on my radar.

5 out of 5 stars Great for film fans.......2006-02-16

If you have even a passing interest in film then this book is a must-have. I collect books on television and film and this one is as good as anything I've read in recent years.

An interesting mix of storytelling, humor, and info for wannabe filmmakers, the author of this book does a fine job of asking informed questions that both fans and students of film want to have answered. What made it really stand out, in my mind, was the selection of filmmakers interviewed. Specifically, it's a group of men and women just reaching the top of their craft. This isn't a book full of old timey Hollywood stories from Robert Evans or even Martin Scorsese - these are the people making films that people are talking about today, and will be talking about for the next fifty years.

I just finished reading it and then ordered another copy for my nephew in film school. A really fun book. Hope this helped.
