Book Description
Ever see Mike Piazza block the plate? Or Derek Jeter slide hard into second? Illegal. But it happens every game. Baseball’s rules, it seems, were made to be broken. And they are, consistently and creatively, by the players, the front office, and even sometimes the fans. Like it or not, cheating has been an integral part of America’s favourite pastime since its inception. But how do they do it, right before our eyes? The Cheater’s Guide to Baseball will show you how cheating is really done. In this lively tour through baseball’s underhanded history, readers will learn how to cork a bat • steal signs • hurl a spitball • throw a world series • and win at any cost! In the end, they’ll come to understand that cheating is as much a part of baseball as pine tar and pinch hitters. And it’s here to stay. The Cheater’s Guide to Baseball is essential reading for even the most casual fan.

Very erudite.......2007-10-03
This is a brilliant book - it may well change the way you think about baseball. Congratulations to the author!
Buy this book for your baseball hating spouse/friend/family member.......2007-10-01
I'll be honest with you, I dislike the game of baseball. Going to a game, watching it? Doesn't intrigue me in the slightest, and I played 3 years of softball growing up. But my husband loves it and he wants to share this fun with me by including me in the season ticket package he bought into with others. So I bring magazines to games or puzzle books so I'm not completely bored. But this season? I brought Derek's book with me and I tell ya - it actually got me watching the game for the first time in a long time. I started looking out for a lot of what he describes in the book while the game was going on - from the history of the pitcher's mound to trying to figure out the signs the base coaches where giving. I even pointed stuff out to my husband that he didn't know. This book helped make my trips to the ballpark more enjoyable AND helped my husband have even more fun with me.
My honest to goodness recommendation is to buy this for the baseball haters that you baseball fans take to games and get frustrated with when they don't pay attention or understand what you're so excited about. This book gives them a level of interest that they may never have known about before - it certainly has for me.
Great gift for a baseball fan.......2007-09-09
Whether you know someone who watches three games a day or just the seventh game of the World Series, this book will entertain them. It's got solid baseball information in it, but is so amusing that even a casual fan will enjoy it.
Derek Zumsteg doesn't advise cheating (for example, in an aside, he describes how to throw a World Series, complete with looking for the "clean, honest crime figures who won't try to blackmail you...They're on aisle 6, next to the unicorns, fairies, sprites, and leprechauns.") But he does explain how cheating through the years has brought us many of the intricacies we have in the game today.
My favorite sections were on how groundskeeping can improve the home team's chance of winning, and a look at the Black Sox that showed, alas, that Shoeless Joe shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame.
Buy it for the man (or woman) who likes baseball and you won't go wrong.
I could not have enjoyed this book more! Terrific!.......2007-08-16
Derek Zumsteg has written a slim but eminently readable history of cheating in baseball.
However you feel about baseball and cheating...with Barry Bonds' recent exploits, many of us baseball fans have been thinking about it a lot...this book will modify your beliefs.
Seriously.
Plus it'll make you laugh out loud, and often.
"Cheating", in its' varying and vague definitions, is explored here from baseball's earliest days up to the whole steroid scandal. It's not encyclopedic, but it gives you plenty of ammunition to argue with the most ardent sports fan you know.
It used to be legal to hold on to a runner's belt as he led off first base.
You could run straight from second to home during a base hit, as long as the umpire didn't see you.
"Cheating" or simply mischievous?
As the rules became more refined, so did "cheating." I promise you that the words "home field advantage" will take on entirely new meanings...
Spitballing, bat-corking, sign-stealing...they each get chapters. Gaylord Perry gets his very own.
Is intentionally delaying a game, during a drizzle, in the hopes that (since you are losing) the game never goes enough innings to be "official" cheating or simply using the rules of baseball to your advantage?
I still laugh at the image of Casey Stengel trying to stress his opinion to the umpires on whether the game should be called because of darkness (no lights in the old days) or rain (before domes and roofs). He would summon a relief pitcher by flashlight in the former situation, or stroll out to the mound with an opened umbrella over his head in the latter. He'd inevitably get tossed, but that's not the point.
The main point here is that some cheating is inexcusable. Zumsteg's essays on the Black Sox and on Pete Rose are well-thought out arguments on the seriousness of those infractions when compared to, say, putting Vaseline on a pitch. I never really understood why the penalty for Pete Rose was so serious.
Now I do. I used to think he should be in the Hall of Fame. Now, I know why he's not.
The steroid issue gets a bit of ink, and it's free of the hyperbole and emotion that usually laces that topic's discussions. He places the use of steroids into a context I had not yet considered, and it makes an inordinate amount of sense.
I could not have enjoyed this book more. I only wish it were longer, which the best praise a reader can offer.
Sloppy and disappointing.......2007-08-11
While I'm sure Zumsteg knows a lot about baseball, the sloppiness of this book makes me question its accuracy. A couple of quick examples:
* At one point he talks about the Red Sox glory days early in the century and says the Sox "would not return to the World Series for another 84 years." Of course, they were in the series numerous times in those 84 years -- they just never won it.
* He also refers to former Orioles "Bobby Grinch" and "Doug DeCines."
Now, those are basic things I know off the top of my head. While I realize his editors deserve some blame, I can't help but think much of the book is hogwash.
While the writing is relatively entertaining, this is basically something that should have been a magazine article that he stretched into a book. The heckling chapter is basically filler and has virtually nothing to do with cheating. Other chapters, while related to cheating (in some form), are similarly overblown.

After a brief detour to New York City for Milk in My Coffee, Eric Jerome Dickey returns to Southern California for his fourth multi-track African American love story. The main story is a "he said, she said" affair between Stephan Mitchell, a well-to-do young software designer who's determined not to let any one woman get in the way of his good time, and Chanté Marie Ellis, who's decided to start turning the tables on men who try to play her for a fool. From now on, she declares, "A dog gets what a dog gets... dogged." Dickey makes their road to romance extremely rocky; in addition to sorting out their own feelings for each other, both Stephan and Chanté have to contend with exes who have just gotten out of their lives. Meanwhile, Stephan's best friend, Darnell, is having problems with his marriage: he wants to be a writer, but his wife insists that he put aside the "hobby" to pay more attention to her. When he meets Chanté's friend Tammy, an up-and-coming actress-singer who not only understands Darnell's artistic passion but encourages him, his commitment to marital fidelity is pushed to the limit.
As always, Dickey shows that he's on top of the current scene, peppering his characters' lives with the latest in black fashion and culture (if you ever find yourself driving in the Los Angeles area, you'll know exactly what your radio presets should be). Although the ending might be a little too neatly wrapped up, you'll never know before you get there whether the next chapter's going to contain romance, comedy, heartache--or maybe a little of each. Dickey's at the top of his form in Cheaters, establishing yet another credential for his status at the top of the contemporary urban romance heap. --Ron Hogan

The book that inspired me to read!!!.......2007-07-02
This was the first romantic novel I've ever read. My suite mate was so dedicated to the book, she missed class for two days. When she finished she handed it over into my hands. I read it, loved it. Later, I purchased my own copy. I lended it out to a friend and she never gave it back. I purchased another one about three weeks ago, just to have in my possession. There's so much cheating in this book, it pisses me off. But it's extremely realistic. I loved all the characters even though some of them pissed me off. I felt their struggles and wanted them to overcome in the end. If you like to read about betrayal, deception, selfishness, and sex, then this is the book for you. It puts you in the mood to make love, so don't say I didn't warn you...smile.
ERIC JEROME DICKEY VIRGIN.......2007-06-21
This is the first Eric Jerome Dickey book I have read and I am thoroughly impressed. I read it in a week! That's the quickest I've read a book since I was in highschool. It was easy reading and very interesting. It was very sexy and real. I couldn't wait to find out what happened to each character. After I finished the book I wished I had never started to read it so I could read it all over again.

I have been reading the Junie B. Jones books with my 6 year old daughter, we LOVE them. We get very excited to read each one. I love this book, because as a teacher I know my kids get tempted to look at eachother's papers. I think this is a great book to help us understand why we need to be honest and do our personal best in school.

Junie B. Jones Cheater Pants.......2005-09-30
Junie B.Jones came back to school and she forgot to do her home
work and the teacher called her up in front and told Junie B.
what she did for the weekend. I like this book because Junie B.
Jones gets a serprice coming for her. I like this book because
it's funny
I would rather my child read Junie B. than read about evolution.......2005-09-29
People complain about the grammer in Junie B.'s books. I don't see a problem at all. My child knows the difference between right and wrong. He makes funny faces when he knows that what she is saying is wrong. Last week my child brought home a book from the library that talked about evolution in it. I would much rather my child read a funny book that has bad grammer in it than to read about "My Uncle dragging his nuckles on the ground". My child is only 6 years old and he had no idea what he was checking out from the library, he thought it was a book about science.

Fuzzy rules.......2007-03-03
I have been doing this plan now for over a month and I am not having any luck. I read into what he says and don't quite understand. Basically there seems to be too much freedom, which originally attracted me to the book. I do not know if I am strict enough during the week, or too lenient during the weekend. I wish there were feedback more specifically from success stories.
Taking a day off Can Really Work........2006-12-30
Okay, how many times have you done a diet and everything that you can live without when your not on a diet seems to be the one thing you want. For my husband that is cake. Anyhow, 4 years ago we started a diet like this, but only gave ourself 1 slurge day. It was Fridays! Thank GOD for FRIDAYS! Anyhow, I was expecting and only at my 6th month. Afraid I would balloon up I started something like this. I didn't diet during that time, I just kept myself under control. But on Fridays, boy I loved it. Had a date at Denny's every week and loved eatting the Fried food. I only gained 15 extra pounds my whole term taking me from 140 to 165 and had a very healthy 6pd 2oz girl. I then continued on the diet doing it like a real diet and got back to 150 somewhat quick. Trust me, it wasn't all the diet, I did walk 3 times a week, but boy it sure did work. My husband dropped about 40 pounds. Now the downfall, after you get to your goal, then you start eating normal. But what is normal, after all you have been use to eating whatever you want, so it doesn't work and the weight will come back, unless you develope some soild fitness plan. Diet shouldn't mean you have have to die over it, but I wish you all the luck to your success.
Finally a realist and yummy heatlhy eating plan to stick for life!!.......2006-12-04
After reading & applying many diets, I found something to stick forever.
Don't think that just because it is called "cheater's diet" it means you eat eat eat whenever you want. The most delicious part of the plan is for the weekends, when most of the people takes the time off to rest, and enjoy their favorite foods, but for the weekdays you eat the common balanced-mediterranean-style heatlhy but still tasty food. Basically, the book contains EVERYTHING you need to know about good nutrition, great foods, ingredients to avoid, why fad diets don't work in the long run, the importance of the need to indulge from time to time in the pleasure of foods without feeling guilty and still lose weight (actually, it is the first book which explains in detail why actually cheating more than in 'just one meal' -a whole weekend!!- burns and keeps your fat off), and many other aspects including excercise with no complex calorie counting or difficult processes.
I'm still in my twenties, and my best moments losing weight have been when I still have had my social life (parties, outings, holidays, etc.) and been able to eat in a sensible way without putting myself in a 'strict-nutrition cage'. And still I lost 2 pounds per week!!
Tried, tested, enjoyed and WORKS.
Finally, after all those "your last diet" promises from the mainstream (and some obscure vegan-crazy) fad diets, this is something to keep without losing your life in the way.
If you're a normal guy or gal, bussy, with a social life, and just want to keep healthy without sacrificing those things (as the cliche goes "life's short"), burning your fat at the same time and look great for the beach in holidays or whatever special moment, this is the real last common-sense-be-healthy plan for you. Just follow the guidelines, hit the gym, and enjoy life.
However, if you are a nutrition-obsessed bodybuilder, athlete, magazine cover model, or fitness aficcionado, you may be very exigent and think that for a specific deadline or personal goals, you need something "more strict". That's fine, but even the weekend cheating offer may work for you when you hit a plateau or when you have reached your goals and want to stick to something do-able for life.
Anyways, try it for yourself, I guarantee you won't starve, nor miss your old eating habits, you will still have your weekend booze, and will be feeling magnific about your body (don't be surprised if your friends start to ask you "how the hell did you manage to get 'six pac' abs if you eat junk every time we go out??"). Shhh, I told you!! ;)
only the weekends are fun.......2006-09-05
the rest of the week is hard. no fun during week days
I liked the supplemets it reccomends. very cheap and proven to help.
The author is honest about exercise. it tells you what it can do.
the first pages...i found them to be a lot of blah blah.
about the cheating. You can indulge with moderation on weekends sinful foods.
The main difficulty is to have the strengh to return back on track during week days. I have done this kind of diet many times and it boosts the metabolism. iF YOU ARE CONSISTENT, you will rarely hit a plateau. During weekend the scale will move up but after 2 days the numbers go down fast.
This happens only if you eat moderately. It can be hard once you start to stop. You wont lose much if you eat 6000 cals the weekend, that is for sure.
Worthless nonsense, and I tried it.......2006-07-29
Almost all reviews are written immediately after reading a book. I'm writing this review several months after reading this book, after trying out the system. Note that I only gave the book one star.
First of all, I stuck to the system for about a month. It did not work at all for me. Not at all. It just settled me into a pattern of gaining some pounds on the weekend and losing them back during the week. There was no change in my metabolism. The whole premise of the book appears to be nonsense.
Second, the book is damaging if you really want to lose weight. It gets you out of the habit of watching what you eat. It gets you back into the habit of satisfying yourself. The author doesn't take into account that once you open that door and start in with the pizza, chocolate, and general enjoyment of food, you will not want to deprive yourself anymore.
One thing this book is very good at is getting dieters to stop caring about their weight and start enjoying food again, which will result in gaining 50 pounds or so, sooner or later. If that is the goal of this book, then it is a success.
There's something a bit sneaky about it, in that it is targeting people who are self disciplined and care about their shape, and it is corrupting them.
There is only one way to lose weight. That is to discipline yourself by denying yourself the pleasure of eating what you want, when you want, in the quantity you want.
It is not a "right or wrong" issue. It is a question of priorities. Which is stronger at this moment - your vanity or your gluttony? Are you an egomaniac who must look good, even if it means not enjoying life? And make no mistake about it, eating is one of the major joys of life.
I'm as confused as the rest of you. But if you want to lose weight now, stay far away from this book. If you want to stop worrying about it, you don't need this book. This book actually contributes exactly nothing to you. It says it is necessary to eat well sometimes in order to lose weight. That is a lie. Quite the opposite. It is necessary to not eat well, to hardly ever eat well, to live a life of constant discipline, in order for most of us to be slim. Is it worth it to you? Look in the mirror and you'll see the answer. And don't beat yourself up about it either. Buddha looked pretty happy, no? Did Jesus say it is necessary to stay slim? Did the lord command you to weigh under 150? Take it easy on yourself. You're entitled to enjoy yourself in this life, in this school of hard knocks.
If you want to lose weight now, just don't eat very much. It's as simple as that. Eat healthy food and make yourself obsessed, 24/7, about not eating very much. You'll lose plenty of weight that way. Then when you get sick of it, you'll gain it all back. Then when you get motivated again, you'll lose it. The fact is, you were designed to be heavier than you want to be. Tough.

Book Description
With scrap lumber and a dream, young Bob Turner became the first All-American Soap Box Derby world champion in 1934. Over the next seventy years, pushed by curiosity, ingenuity, and determination, thousands more follow in his footsteps to try--for at least one day--to become the most famous kid in America.
Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams provides a history of the race from its beginning on a hillside in Dayton, to the corporate-sponsored star-studded event it became in the 1950s and 1960s. It chronicles an era of near-obscurity after the event was rocked by the withdrawal of its major corporate sponsor and by a legendary cheating scandal.
Through first-person accounts, the book reveals influences of the Great Depression, World War II, the Civil Rights and feminist movements, Vietnam, and Watergate, which helped shape the race, transforming it from a simple amateur event into an American icon.

Stories From The Soapbox.......2005-02-05
The soapbox derby.
Originating during the thirties, what had been a simple kids game would grow to gigantic proportions and come to symbolize America at its finest. Akron, Ohio would become the Mecca of the soapbox derby. Every summer hundreds of boys would gather to race against each other. Qualifing for the Akron race was a feat in itself, each participant already having won several other matches to qualify for the honor.
Winning the soapbox derby meant riches, fame, fortune, college scholarships, the moon! The sponsors were guaranteed popularity to the infinite power, it seemed everyone came out on top! Times would pass, though, and the soapbox derby would face problems. There were inevitable instances of racisim and sexism when African-American children and girls got involved. In the seventies the derby was nearly destroyed when a key sponser pulled out in 1972 and a cheating scandal occurred in 1973. Fortunately it came back, though, and, while not as popular as it once was, still has a definite following. The history of this sport, those involved, and the numerous persona, both good and bad, that made up the sport are covered in "Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams".
Melanie Payne has gone to great detail to describe the origins of soapbox derby racing and those responsible for it. We learn how it progressed from a simple kid's hobby to a father-son (and eventually father-daughter) bonding experience, how it grew and grew and grew. There are the noble stories of intergration of black youths, of girl drivers coming into their own. Of course, there are also the not-so-noble stories of questionable decisions that left some contestants crying foul, of cover-ups on the part of officials, and of the notorious 1973 soapbox derby racing scandal in which an attempt to use an electromagnet would mushroom into a mess that tarred the entire industry as dishonest. Punches are not pulled, praise is given when praise is due, criticism is levelled when called for.
Not everyone gave this book thumbs-up, officials at the Akron soapbox derby races were so incensed by it that they refused to sell it at their meet and tried to have parts censored.
Personally, I am glad it was printed as is. It reminds us that an institution is only as noble as those that run it, and rules are made to be followed, not ignored or broken.
This is an excellent essay on a popular piece of Americana.
The best book on SBD.......2003-10-18
I was in Akron and Gil Klecan came into the room with a copy. I read a few pages and had to get the book.I have read it over several times. It is the best book I have ever read on the Derby. She did a lot of research to come up with a very true account.I have been in and out of the Derby since 1946. I know most of the people she mentions. Some of the stories I had heard off hand. I never have spoken with Ballard, Gronen, and Lunn.I knew of their experiences. She Filled in the missing spaces. I have spoken with quite a few of my old friends from the Derby and they all say the same thing."The book is better then they though". For someone who knew very little about the Derby she learned it fast.Had she written a fiction book on the Derby, I would not have taken it free. I raced in 1946,7,& 8. My children raced in the 70's My oldest son placed 3rd and holds the fastest time on the Akron Hill.
The chapter on The Durham Champions is superb. Sam Moore was an old friend, and a good one. Sam never told me the things he told Melanie. He was a real credit to Durham.
Gronen said,"My hat is off to the sincere and honest boys and girls who raced in the Soap Box Derby.I extend an apology to them." I take my hat off to HIM for HIS honesty.
The title Champions, Cheaters, and Childhood Dreams is the only title this book can have.
"Cheaters?" Yes, on both sides of the fence.
"Childhood Dreams?" Yes, I had them. My son made them come true. As an old SBD friend said,"Winning the local and going to Akron was like dying and going straight to heaven."

CHAMPIONS CHEATERS AND CHILDHOOD DREAMS.......2003-08-25
"A WARM AND REFRESHING LOOK AT THE WORLD'S GREATEST YOUTH EVENT... I SAVORED EVERY PAGE.. READING SOME PAGES TWICE TO MAKE IT LAST LONGER"
IT COVERS SOME STORIES FROM THE DERBY THAT I DIDN'T REALIZE HAPPENED.. SUCH AS THE LINE OF BLACK CHAMPS FROM DURHAM NORTH CAROLINA.. AND I HAVE BEEN A DERBY FAN FOR MORE THAN FIFTY YEARS.

What a trip! "Champions and Cheaters" brought me memories of my childhood, those days when jumping into any garage-made contraption and rolling it downhill was a thrill. But there was more to Champions than the glide down memory lane. While America was changing, nudging girls and children of color into the mainstream, so was the Derby.
And it wasn't until I read this book that I realized that anyone could cheat in a soapbox derby. Imagine my surprise when I heard that it happened again this year.
I found especially poignant the author's interviews with race participants. It is powerful stuff. After so many years, the gut-wrenching disappointments and the jubilation over wins, obviously, are still potently felt by participants.

One of the best in the series!.......2007-09-01
This is the one of the many books of the Fear Street series, and it's really good. Fear Street is a series about scary and/or supernatural events that happen to teenagers in a ficitional town called Shadyside. In this book, an attractive wealthy girl named Carter is panicked about failing the math portion of her SAT's. Her dad is a judge, and has big plans for her to go to an Ivy League college. Panicked, pressured, and scared, she gets a boy from the bad side of town who happens to be brilliant in math take the exam for her. However, their original agreement isn't enough, and he keeps blackmailing her for more and more. The reader feels for Carter as she slips deeper and deeper with each lie she tells. Will she ever be free of this, and how??This has a pretty good twist ending and gives a good taste of future books in the series.Pulitizer material it's not, but for young teens, or anyone wanting a quick thrilling read, this suits the bill just fine. This is one of my fave books in this series!
interesting..........2007-08-15
This book was different, it had like a stalker plot to it. the guy who stalks the girl sort of thing. It follows the R.L. stine fear street thing, her living on fear street and bad things happening so yea the book was pretty good.
Second Glimpse - Splendid!.......2007-08-02
I have always enjoyed reading novels by R.L. Stine, from his series of Goosebumps to his Fear Street, and this one - "The Cheater," was no exception. This is my second time reading this novel, the overall experience was exhilarating.
In my opinion, the plot was predictable - I knew it was Dan who killed Adam all along. In chapter 14, Dan tells Carter not to give any more money to Adam, but Carter panics and explains giving money is her only way out. Prior to leaving Carter's house, Dan promised, "I'll try to think of something." At the end of this chapter, the police found Adam dead. However, the most surprising part of this thriller is the identity of the man who attempts to kill Carter.
A good read!.......2006-08-10
When I read the back cover of this, it didn't seem too interesting. But in fact, it's a solid read.
For me, it wasn't so much about discovering who the killer is in this book. The thing I liked more was portrayal of characters. I think Carter is a very interesting character, and so is Adam. I like how Carter's world is completely different than Adam's, and how it's described.
But don't think the plot was bad, not at all. It was a pretty suspensful book. Although I prefer Sunburn and Lights Out to this book, I still really liked it.
The Cheater.......2006-05-10
I thought theis book was very cool. I would reffer this book to many kids. It is filled with lots of excitment, and mystery. The begining was ok. but when Adam came in eveything got exciting. The ending was not how i expected it to be. the ending could have been alittle more exciting. But over all the was great!
I think lots of young readers should read this book...
Book Description
"After reading and hearing so many epitaphs to political discourse in a polarized nation in the wake of 9/11, I take heart from Tom De Luca's and John Buell's realistic but hopeful argument for one last mighty effort to pull democracy back from the brink."
Bill Moyers
"Masterful! Fascinating! Unsettling! Explains why Americans regularly demonize political opponents then suggests how we might free ourselves from a long, angry legacy. This rousing book should be required reading for scholars interested in the troubled past and citizens looking to a more democratic future."
James A. Morone, author of Hellfire Nation: The Politics of Sin in American History
"In a lively and illuminating fashion, De Luca and Buell chart the politics of demonization in America, placing its temptations into correspondence with the sacrifices it imposes on democratic life."
William E. Connolly, author of Why I Am Not a Secularist
"Mines diverse sources--newspaper columns, films, commercials, popular music, academic scholarship--offering a truly fair and balanced treatment of Democrats and Republicans, left and right, utterly refusing to demonize the demonizers. This vibrant book could not be more timely."
Jane Bennett, co-editor of The Politics of Moralizing
"
Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers! captures the power of demonization in our polarized politics, though as the authors rightly point out, this is deeply rooted in our history and political economy. Rather than give in to a diminished civic life, Tom De Luca and John Buell set out a compelling course for restoring democratic civility to politics. This should be on the short list for those who wish to ready themselves for the next battle in our culture wars."
Stanley B. Greenberg, author of The Two Americas: Our Current Political Deadlock and How to Break It
The level of vitriol in American politics has been rising with no end in sight. Terms like "evildoer," "war on terror," and "axis of evil" have become commonplace in our discussion of international politics. What ever happened to civil debate? Where has all this moralizing come from? And what harm has this new level of attack caused to democracy in America?
In this compelling and cogent account, Tom De Luca and John Buell chart the rise of what they rightly label as the "demonization" of American politics, showing how political campaigns often neglect debates over policy in favor of fights over the private character and personal lives of politicians. Political interests are still served by this style of politics, but democracy, the authors contend, is the loser. Covering everything from the Clinton impeachment to the war on terrorism to the 2004 presidential campaign, the authors show the distinctly American qualities of demonization and how their frequency and intensity has grown in the last four decades.
Suggesting that demonization is not inevitable or irreversible, this important book offers ways out of the political mudpit and back to a more civilized debate where democracy and freedom of speech can coexist in a productive, idea-rich environment.

Great Title, Tough Reading.......2006-04-01
Although I agree with other reviewers that this is a much-needed and thoughtful study of a serious problem in American political discourse, I found the text tough going. I suspect that previous reviewers might have some background in Political Science that I lack. Although I have a PhD from the University of Chicago, it's in a Humanities field, and not Social Sciences.
The title suggests a lively, down-to-earth volume, with a lot of specific examples, but instead the book turns out to be dry, abstract, highly theoretical, and filled with the kind of jargon academics use in communicating with one another, while shutting out the general public.
Despite this problem, the book does have many interesting insights to offer, particularly on the role president Bush's religious fundamentalism plays in his political behavior. But that's old news. Anybody who's been paying attention in the years since Bush became president knows that he and his circle are determined to turn the United States into a fundamentalist theocracy, and are succeeding at a terrifying rate.
In a televised speech, co-author Tom De Luca noted: "It's not demonization when you have the goods on somebody." De Luca's book did not succeed in changing my opinion that America is now in the hands of the most absolutely and irredeemably evil people ever to hold power in the entire history of this country-- and we DO "have the goods" on them. But the opposition (the spineless and cowering Democrats) lacks the courage to do anything with the edivence.
This book rewards close reading but be warned-- you're going to have to work to get the message!
Risking the Mantel of Reason in dangerous times.......2006-03-03
Liars, Cheaters and Evil doers helps us chart a course for civil debate...not a polyanna treatise, but the importance of real debate,
calling things the way you see them based on information, reason and justice, not hysteria in which relative truth is subjected to the acid tongoue and the basist instincs, but one that tries to articulate points of view in which people of good intent can forcefully disagree in a way that promotes truth rather than inflames the worst in us. It is an ancient desire and De
Luca and Buell should be commended for risking to take up this mantel in these dangerous times.
Must be read by everyone who feels strongly that our politcal discourse much match our best ideals........2006-02-20
In "Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers!" authors Tom De Luca and John Buell admirably examine the corrosive phenomena of "demonization" in American politics and the harm it has done to our civic discourse and democratic institutions. The scope of their work is breathtaking as they trace the trajectory of "political demonology" in America from its infancy as a clash between puritan conservatism and hedonistic liberalism, to its contemporary manifestation in the virulent culture wars of recent decades as "culture warriors" on both sides of the political divide disparage and demonize their foes. Delving deeper, De Luca and Buell uncover a "moral paradox" inherent in our national character that appears to fuel our need to transform political opponents into enemies. The authors contend that our political culture has now reached a zero-sum impasse engendered by the approximate parity of the two political parties as each seeks victory through mobilizing their core constituencies by exploiting wedge issues and engaging in character-driven politics. Liberals, conservatives, and moderates have all been guilty of this, while those victimized and demonized are very often the most vulnerable among us. De Luca and Buell offer a thoughtful antidote to the polarized partisanship that has seized hold of us. Their goal, a "more generous democratic politics" forged out of a new political covenant based upon true equity and opportunity, is a noble one. This well-crafted and insightful book should be read by everyone who feels strongly that our political discourse must match our best ideals.
FINALLY, A HOPEFUL OUTLOOK.......2006-02-15
"Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers!" by Tom DeLuca and John Buell is a welcome antidote to the shrill ideological slugfests that fill the airwaves disguised as political discourse. Their simple formula, "proper condemnation requires appropriate distinctions," is a call to end the simplistic retreat to demonization in civil debate, and demands that we aspire to, and require, a higher standard of discourse from ourselves, colleagues, elected officials and the media. This book offers valuable analysis and a hopeful conclusion to so many of us who despair of the current political climate.
A Necessary Book.......2006-02-14
Before reading Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers! I was certainly conscious that the tone of our political discourse has always left much to be desired. In the back of my mind, until the last few years when the demonization deepened, I assumed this was to be expected in adversarial situations like politics and we had to live with it. The last few years, though, has only left me feeling hopeless that the situation has progressed beyond the possibility of it ever being civilized.
Since reading Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers! I have become aware that there are so many facets that contribute to the current climate than I ever dreamed of. It is like trickles of water washing down from the melting snows of the mountains. A trickle here, a trickle there, and soon it unites and a mighty river flows. We seem to be in that might river now feeling a force that seems beyond our control.
That is not necessarily so. Reading the thorough and deep analysis of political demonization by Tom De Luca and John Buell will educate on all of the ways in which this situation came about. You can't solve a problem unless you first understand it. This book does that and more. It offers insightful solutions.
This is a must-read book for anyone who cares about having a country that does right by all of its citizens. We can't have serious debate over issues that affect all of us if we can't learn to be civilized, respectful of differing opinions and, most of all, to listen to each other with an open heart. Liars! Cheaters! Evildoers! is a first, and major, step toward that end.
Book Description
An invaluable tool for anyone who's had that sinking feeling that his or her mate is being unfaithful, Cheaters will help you find out the truth.

THE RFC IS ON NUMBER 3.......2007-08-27
Having been married to a cheating wife, I wish that I'd had the benefit of having this book on hand to help me to focus on things and bring about the inevitable conclusion a lot faster. It wouldn't have changed much since it seems that women must be convicted felon drug users to lose custody (in the state of Maryland or at least on the Eastern Shore) of children they cared nothing for during their adulterous affairs. Be that as it may, it was educational to go throught the 180 telltale signs listed here to check off the applicable ones (and file the others away for future reference). A must have for those in doubt (or denial).
