Book Description
It began when a small group of believers stepped out in faith-against all odds-and claimed the Queen of Angels Hospital in downtown Los Angeles for the cause of Christ. Now 200 different ministries in the Los Angeles International Church reach out to thousands of residents. Innovative programs minister to AIDS victims, the homeless, battered women, drug and alcohol addicts, and abused children-offering hope and a chance for a better life.
The Church That Never Sleeps shows how God can use this incredible ministry as a model to make dreams come true in neighborhoods across the nation.

The Church that never sleeps.......2007-06-11
This was a great resource for me since our vision is very similar and Pastor Matthews personal struggles and experience with the community not only enlighten the reader put those of us in similar ministry can gain hope and affirmation. What a blessing this book is and the reality of it so striking. I loved every minute in reading he accounts.
SCRIPTURE IN ACTION: Applicable To Us All.......2007-02-19
I was surprised to see this book was printed in the year 2000. The reason for the surprise is threefold: I firmly believe it is destined to become a classic so expected a higher sales number and currently there are only four reviews at amazon.com and lastly out of the four reviews ministry is mentioned often, yet the book is clearly intended for those who directly minister as well as for "the rest of us". To me, the hallmark of Matthew Barnett's work is the SINCERITY throughout, which was very refreshing. In the book, Matthew Barnett recounts how (at least at the time his book was published) it is common for other local churches to actually post signs stating "No Gang Members Allowed"!! Praise God that Our Lord does not place such constraints. "The Church That Never Sleeps" will awaken your mind, will and emotions to the Lord's calling for outreach and not only inreach in our daily lives. I enjoyed the many references to his relationship with his Father, Pastor Tommy Barnett, not because of "who they are" but because their Father-Son bond is a model for any parent at any time. A powerful reminder of how parents can influence their children by not only their action but their words and their time. This is slightly off-topic in a way but when Matthew's vast early and cumulative exposure to his Dad's Ministry is referred to, it caused me to recall a certain very young actor that people scoffed at for stating (on "The Tonight Show")his early exposure to the world of acting had prepared him to move into directing movies...two boys who grew to men, different backgrounds, influenced and influential, one goes on to Minister the Lord's work and the other films. Each has had a continuing impact on many lives as a response to their childhood and inner direction. Very interesting to me and this led to my further understanding we each have the same sort of choices to affect many on a daily basis. Which road will you allow The Lord to direct you? As a result of the book, I am very interested in checking out not only the L.A. Church but as well Rick Stoker of Wilmington, North Carolina, who relinquished a very successful career as a physician for college-level basketball teams in order to establish his own ministry. The book makes it so very clear even someone like me can help (disabled, chronic illness) even with small donations...I read once all those little errors the grocery stores make that customers rarely catch amounts to huge sums of money for the grocery business...hmmmm, I can choose small donations to help the Lord's outreach through these two individiuals. That is how the book inspired me. The book came to my attention courtesy of Joyce Meyer and her daily (televised locally, also via cable, also via radio, also via her website, including "podcast") program "Enjoying Everyday Life". Matthew Barnett was a recent guest. The one word that for me best describes this work is: sincerity. Destined to be a Classic.
What's Real!.......2007-01-29
This book is what real ministry is all about. If you are just starting out in the ministry, this book is especially helpful. Matthew Barnett brings you from the beginning of his ministry through his amazing journey to a thriving full ministry today. He brings us back to what is real in ministry. You will be forced to examine your life, your ministry in the light of what the gospels say real ministry is all about. This book will challenge you to come up higher and to throw off some of the old ideas about what church is.
great reminder.......2004-08-10
Great book. For me, and I think for many others, it wasn't so much that the book had any new revelation or teaching as much as it reminds us of the true simplicity and purity of real ministry. You know, the stuff that we used to do when we were younger, and it worked, before we got sidetracked with OUR aganda, OUR goals, OUR ministry career. Thanks Matthew! Let's keep it simple. Phillipians 2.4 should be the theme verse: "Look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others."
Passionate, Loving, and Inspiring.......2000-07-20
In, The Church That Never Sleeps, Matthew Barnett takes the reader on his journey of planting and growing the LA International Church. You sit with him in his lonely office as he contemplates ways to reinspire his small congregation. You walk past him on your way down the street the day he moved his desk in front of the church building in order to converse with those walking by. You get excited along with him as the church begins to grow and reach out to the surrounding community. You scratch your head with amazement as he considers purchasing a 400,000 square foot hospital building that has been vacant for 9 years. You participate with several of the 180 ministries of the church. Finally, you rejoice. You rejoice because of the tremendous work God has done and is continuing every day at the LA International Church...serving, loving, and pointing people to Jesus...an incredible journey!

Everything changes when a woman becomes a mother, but society--particularly women themselves--often colludes to deny this simple truism. In The Mask of Motherhood, author Susan Maushart (a nationally syndicated columnist in Australia and the mother of three children) explores the effect childbearing has upon women. In the process, she removes the veils of serenity and satisfaction to reveal what she holds to be the truth: the early years of motherhood are physically difficult and can be emotionally devastating. New mothers increasingly enter full-scale identity crises, few women have sufficient information about child-rearing realities, and, as Maushart writes, "the realities of parenthood and especially motherhood are kept carefully shrouded in silence, misinformation, and outright lies." The book comprises seven essay-style chapters. In "Falling: The Experience of Pregnancy," Maushart discusses wrongful notions about morning sickness, the mixed messages about pregnancy weight gain, and the "mask" of stoicism pregnant women feel compelled to wear. In "Laboring Under Delusions," Maushart exposes the changes 30 years have brought in childbirth, and the contemporary woman's need for self-control in all things, including birth. In "Superwoman and Stuporman," Maushart disabuses readers of the myth of what she calls, "pseudo-egalitarian family life." The Mask of Motherhood is extensively researched, convincing, and deeply insightful. --Ericka Lutz
Book Description
Becoming a mother is filled with the extremes of emotion--the highest highs and the lowest lows. But women are often reluctant to talk honestly about the experience for fear they'll be seen as bad mothers. With wit and candor, The Mask of Motherhood takes on the myths and the misinformation, helping women to prepare and deal with the depth of feeling that comes with the experience and perhaps most important, letting them know that many, if not most, new mothers are feeling the same way.
Susan Maushart, social critic and mother of three, explores how motherhood affects our marriages and friendships, our relationships with parents, our sex lives, and self-esteem. Becoming a mother is a momentous occasion, so why do we maintain such a conspiracy of silence about it? In The Mask of Motherhood, mothers will find the comfort and reassurance they are looking for, and confirmation that, indeed, motherhood is the toughest job in the world, but can also be the most rewarding.
"Maushart writes engagingly and persuasively about the fact that...today's mothers feel more pressure than ever to defend their choices by donning a happy face." --People Magazine
Customer Reviews:
A good look into reality.......2007-10-03
What you get is a sober view at motherhood. Pay attention of the role of the father. No women in the study says "oh and at that moment my husband did that..." motherhood looks like a very lonely journey you board on.
Eye Opening.......2007-07-26
Before I got my hands on this book the only things I had heard about motherhood were tales that might as well have come straight from the glossy pages of a parenting magazine. Motherhood seemed to be this glorious, rewarding and very satisfying experience. Not once did I hear anything more negative than "Raising Kids is not that easy".
In this very well researched book, however, motherhood is presented in a different light. The author talks about all the challenges new mothers have to face and why experienced mothers never really share these things with Non-Mothers.
I'm really thankful for this book because it gave me a better insight into what motherhood is really like and made me realize that I still need a few years before I will be ready to face this challenge.
My Favorite "Mother" Book.......2007-07-02
When you first become a mother and realize all "motherhood" entails, it can be a bit frightening. This book will be your savior. It includes the thoughts you may be thinking but are afraid to say out loud. It will open your eyes to the issues so many new mothers face with honesty. It will enable you to make the changes that you may deem necessary to take off your "mask". Most of all, you will be secure in the knowledge that you are NOT alone.
Claudine Wolk, Author "It Gets Easier I Promise and Other Lies We Tell New Mothers"
good read, worth the time, warns you of the impending perils of motherhood.......2007-06-03
With everything about motherhood written in a glowing review of the changes it brings to one's life, this honest book was refreshing. It's not overwhelmingly depressing-- it just tells the truth about changes you can expect in your life as a new mom. It seems to me that it's always good to enter a new endeavor with as much information as possible-- and this book certainly helps fill in gaps.
Honesty for mothers, at last!.......2007-03-09
After having my first child I remember feeling so unprepared, scared, alone and sad. When I reached out to other mothers for support, the majority of them acted as though the way I felt was unusual and strange. I felt like I must be the most terrible, unloving mother in the world. After that I retreated back into my shell and continued to spiral downward (it didn't help that I had a colicky, high-needs baby). A year or so later, a friend recommended this book to me. By that time I had pretty much figured out that all mothers wear a "mask" but I sure as heck wasn't going to let any woman I cared about find out the way I had: months of isolation and self-loathing. Now whenever one of my female friends or family has a child, I buy a gift for the baby, and this book for the mother. I only wish someone had given it to me after I had my firstborn so I would have known that this wasn't an obstacle that I was facing alone.

Elizabeth Berg has a single great gift as a novelist. She creates heroines who are stuck and unhappy, yet deeply sympathetic. This may seem like an easy trick to pull off, but it's not. Think about it: usually when a character is mired in a problem--especially a problem stemming from her own reluctance to change, or fear of commitment, or lack of identity--the reader is ready within a few dozen pages to shout, "Pull yourself together!" and set the book aside. In contrast, Berg's characters seem like enjoyable challenges: problems with actual solutions.
In Never Change, Berg uses her gift to great advantage. Middle-aged Myra Lipinsky describes herself as "the one who sat on a folding chair out in the hall with a cigar box on my lap selling tickets to the prom, but never going." And despite a flourishing career as a visiting nurse, she feels as much an also-ran as ever. As the novel begins, in fact, high school seems to be rearing its ugly head again: Chip Reardon, the heartthrob of Myra's youth, has returned to town to live with his parents. Chip is dying from a brain tumor, and Myra becomes his nurse. Berg is not the kind of writer to lay bare the unsettling power dynamics of such a situation. Instead, Chip and Myra become friends and, well, learn how to love each other. It's a testament to the author's strong sense of character that we actually believe--and what's more, care about--Myra's emergence from her emotional cocoon. And the book is full of nice details, like this snapshot of children being read to at a library, "rising up on their knees to see the pictures, resting their hands unselfconsciously on those ahead of them so that they would not lose their balance." Such careful observations, recounted in Myra's voice, make us believe that she is a character worth knowing, and worth saving. --Claire Dederer
Book Description
A self-anointed spinster at fifty-one, Myra Lipinski is reasonably content with her quiet life, her dog, Frank, and her career as a visiting nurse. But everything changes when Chip Reardon, the golden boy she adored in high school, is assigned as her new patient. Choosing to forgo treatment for an incurable illness, Chip has returned to his New England hometown to spend what time he has left. Now, Myra and Chip find themselves engaged in a poignant redefinition of roles, and a complicated dance of memory, ambivalence, and longing.

You know people like me. I'm the one who sat in a folding chair out in the hall selling tickets to the prom but never going, the one everybody liked but no one wanted to be with. A self-anointed spinster at fifty-one, Myra Lipinsky has endured the isolation of her middle life by doting on her dog, Frank, and immersing herself in her career as a visiting nurse. Myra considers herself reasonably content, telling herself, It's enough, work and Frank. And it has been enough -- until Chip Reardon, the too-good-to-be-true golden boy she adored from afar, is assigned to be her new patient. Choosing to forgo invasive treatment for an incurable illness, Chip has returned from Manhattan to the New England home of his childhood to spend what time he has left. Now, Myra and Chip find themselves engaged in a poingnant redefinition of roles, and a complicated dance of memory, ambivalence, and longing.
Customer Reviews:
Depressing and stupid.......2007-08-18
This book sucks. "Never Change" is about Myra Lipinski, a 51-year-old nurse who has basically lived her life in a self-imposed solitary confinement. There's nothing wrong with this woman aside from the fact that she has absolutely zero self-confidence and doesn't believe that anyone could truly like or care about her. The fact that Myra is such a weak character is one of the two main reasons why I hated this book. The other reason is because the basic plot of the story revolves around Myra caring for her former high school classmate, Chip Reardon, who has returned to town after being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumor. Chip was the guy Myra and all the other girls lusted after in high school: kind, popular, handsome, etc. The story is just so hokey and I really didn't care what happened to any of the characters. What a waste of paper.
Another great Berg novel!.......2007-06-17
I put 3 authors in the same echelon, Tyler, Shreeve and Berg. I think, Berg is my favorite. I have read several of her books and the thing I recall the most about her books is her words. I have written down several of her quotes from the various books I have read. She has a way of putting into words things you have thought but couldn't really find the words to say. I felt a personal pull to this book since my mother is a nurse and I could never understand why she enjoyed her job so much. This book shed some light. It isn't just a job. It's the people. Berg created a great character for this book, as well. Myra isn't necessarily that pretty on the outside. Therefore, she doesn't attract the people she longed for. However, once you had the privilege to meet her, you recognized the incredible beauty inside. I think Myra realized this about herself at the end of the book. At least, if she didn't, she was on her way. Another Berg book that has left an impression on me.
"Never Change", please, dear Elizabeth Berg.......2007-05-29
I bought this book with no prior knowledge of the story line - I just knew it was by Elizabeth Berg, so certainly it would be worth reading.
What I did not know was that it deals with death and dying, the progress of illness and its effects on the caregiver, the question of what we do with our life to make it meaningful to ourselves, and the way love can come up to us when we don't expect it.
When I began reading, and realized the storyline included a man who was in the final weeks of his life, I almost stopped reading because my brother is in that same place. I thought I wouldn't be able to take it. My brother is experiencing so many of the same symptoms as Chip. I'm glad, though, that I finished the book while I still have some time with my brother.
So again, my heart is lifted by Elizabeth Berg's writing. This is a truly beautiful book, one of her best, meaningful on so many levels. I can only say please, Ms. Berg, never change.
My Absolute Fave........2007-05-24
My absolute fave of Berg's many books...and I have read them all!
Not my fave Elizabeth Berg novel.......2007-01-15
I just didn't get into this book and had to force myself to finish reading it with the hopes that it would get better. The whole premise of the book was interesting, but I didn't feel the story was well developed.

This is a geat book. If you liked all the others, you will like this one
This is a great book, yet kind of sad........2006-02-07
Abby Hayes' best friend Jessica comes to visit. Well,Jessica has changed alot. (And,please, don't call me crazy, but I like the new Jessica a bit better,I just really like people who are very girly!)And her friends Hannah and Casey are getting closer because of a talent show, although that part has a better ending. So,in all,the story was kind of sad.
Amazing Days Of Abby Hayes.......2005-09-09
This book is about a girl named Abby Hayes. Her best friend,Jessica comes to give Abby a visit. But when Jessica comes she is a whole different person. Her name was Jessy, she wore lip gloss, and she carried around a cell phone. Abby is sad, because this is not the best friend she knows. This story tells about their friendship. I recommend this book to: 4th and 5th grade girls who have friends or friend problems.

< OHH- MAN! >.......2005-07-19
I've read the 14th book, and this book is not as ugly as that one but it's NEARLY the same.
I'm a huge fan of "Abby Hayes" books, I just love the books when Abby, Jessica and Natalie were friends and I'm sorry that Jessica had to leave in the 9th book, but in this book was starting to get ugly.
P.S. When I read the 14th and this book, I wonder where Anne Mazer got this crazy ideas.
This is the book where Jessica came to visit, she had forgotten EVERYTHING! She even changed her name to ' Jessy '. Jessy didn't wear overalls and smiley buttons anymore. She wouldn't play soccer with Abby either, she said it was TOO MESSY.'Jessy was now a girl that carried a cell phone, wore mini skirts, lip gloss, EARRINGS......and had a BOY FRIEND! Someone said Jessy was prettier and cooler than Brianna. But I think that she's CRAZIER. To make matters worse, Abby's friends didn't seem to have time for Abby anymore. How will her friendship survive when her friends were changing?
Some things do change.......2005-01-02
Wow! In this book a lot of things do change for Abby. First there is a talent show, where Abby does not want to preticipate, but pairs her two best friends, Casey and Hannah together. Then Abby's former bff, Jessica-now Jessy- comes to Abby's town to visit from her father, stepmother, and stepsister's house. Abby relizes thet Jessy has really changed. Jessy carries a cellphone, has a boyfriend and wears miniskirtrs 24/7. In this novel Abby relizes for the first time that some things do change. I would reccomend this book. It was an enjoyable read.

The hype and market valuations surrounding certain Internet stocks may lead one to conclude that the e-commerce race is over--or nearly so. Clearly, the Internet has caught traditional companies off guard, giving the more nimble dot coms a huge head start. But the race is far from over, says Mary Modahl, a vice president at Forrester Research. In Now or Never, she argues that we are in the first year of a "ten year transition in the way consumers shop and save," and that winning in the Internet space not only requires identifying consumers that are most likely to take their shopping online, but exploiting the new and different business models made possible by online commerce.
Modahl believes that conventional demographics, which segment populations according to their income and education, is a poor predictor of online behavior. As an alternative, she advances Forrester Research's work on "technographics," which measure consumers' attitudes toward technology. Forrester has found that 52 percent of the population is optimistic about technology and is "marching happily towards online shopping," and she shows how companies can better target their marketing strategies to meet this growing legion of consumers. In addition, Modahl considers the "post-Internet competitive environment," which she thinks will be "far more fluid and responsive to changes in supply and demand." Using examples of traditional industries that have had their business models turned upside down by Internet economies--newspapers, travel agencies, and brokerages--Modahl offers ways that the old guard can better cope with technology change, channel conflict, and their own inertia toward this new marketplace.
Well written and presented, Now or Never is a concise distillation of Forrester Research's approach to e-commerce. Anyone whose livelihood is connected to--or threatened by--the relentless march of the Internet would do well to read and consider this book. --Harry C. Edwards
Book Description
The battle for the 21st century is now clear: inside, traditional brick and mortar companies are digging in for the fight of their lives; outside, a tightening circle of dot.com upstarts threaten to transform every feature of the economy. Is the war over already?
Mary Modahl thinks not; instead, she anticipates that the coming five years will be decisive--which is why companies that want to stay alive and thrive must act Now or Never.
The key to success in the brave new world of e-commerce is a deep and nuanced understanding of how consumers think about and use the Internet. Forrester Research--the world's most respected technology research firm--has developed that understanding in a groundbreaking model of consumer behavior called Technographics. For the firsttime ever, Now or Never shares the Technographics model with business people outside Forrester's exclusive client list.
Built on interviews with more than 250,000 Americans, Technographics divides consumers into ten sharply identified segments based on differing attitudes toward the Internet. That means each segment will use e-commerce in a different way and dive into buying on-line at a different pace.
Using Technographics, businesspeople--from companies that are small or large, established or brand new, traditional or dot.com--will be able to plot a well-reasoned, robust Internet strategy.
Beyond Technographics, the book also identifies and explains the startling, counterintuitive new business models that drive competition on the web. Now or Never introduces the concept of Dynamic Trade, a term that Forrester coined to describe the disruptive new way business gets done on the web.
With engaging prose that is chock-full of real stories, Modahl describes how Dynamic Trade changes the balance of supply and demand, requires companies to ramp up to scale faster ever, and zeroes out marginal cost.
As the battle for Internet dominance reaches a crisis, Now or Never stands apart. Written by a straight-talking business practitioner who knows and understands the Internet as well as anyone working today, this groundbreaking book confronts the most pressing business issue of our time with reasoned answers to the questions on the mind of every informed executive:
When will the Internet change the way I do business?
Why is the Internet transforming everything about the economy and competition?
How exactly will my industry and company change, in terms of customers, competitors, cash flow, and the bottom line?
AND
What should I do about it right now?

A good read.......2006-02-21
The next few years, will be extremely important for deciding the loyalties of Internet consumers. Companies that don't transition to the Internet when their customers do, will be left behind. The first step is to when your customers will transition to the Internet. To this end, the author outlines a method called Technographics, developed by Forrester Research, that categorizes customers based on their attitudes towards technology. This method allows you to know how many of your customers are online, how many will be online soon, and how many may never be online. Technographics classifies consumers based on three factors that influence buying behavior:
1. Attitude towards technology: is the consumer optimistic or pessimistic about using technology?
2. Income: The amount of money consumers have to spend strongly influences online behavior.
3. Motivation to use technology: Beyond comfort with technology, how motivated is the consumer to use it?
After you have determined when and how your customers will get online, you must develop a strategy for reaching them. Whether your customers are early adopters of the Internet, reluctant users in the mainstream or low-income consumers who will probably not be able to become frequent online purchasers, you must detail your marketing strategies in order to reach them. In Internet terms, this means that you must go where they go online, and advertise to them there.
It is also necessary to understand the ways in which the Internet is actually transforming the markets. The author calls this new environment Dynamic Trade. Dynamic Trade occurs as markets become more fluid and responsive to changes in supply and demand. Prices are able to fall to their competitive point faster in response to demand. Companies must be able to keep up with the markets in order to survive.
All you want to know on e-consumers, commerce, and business.......2002-11-15
Internet is disturbing the "old economy", but we do not always understand what and where are the changes and how we can move to get a chance to compete in this new environment. Another question is about the urgency to take action.
Now or Never is Mary Modahl's answer. She wants to convince us that each company needs to define its own Web strategy to keep contact with consumers.
In Information Age, customers are more than ever at the centre of each organization, and a preliminary is to understand them to be able to serve them products and services they want. Marketing people are using classical segmentation tools to do the job, but these one are no more valid to explain consumer's attitudes on the Web. It's why the author is sharing with us technographics segmentation developed by Forrester research. Aside income, two new dimensions are introduced: consumers' attitude towards technology and motivation to use this technology. Technographics divides consumers in ten different groups from early Internet adopters as "Fast Forwards" to "Laggards," people who will be very late or never buying on Internet. Knowing this consumers segmentation is a base to develop an adapted marketing approach and to develop a pertinent Web strategy. But it also gives confidence to every organization, when we learn that Internet mainstream customers are still buying outside Internet and will represent the real challenge and opportunity of coming years. That means it's not too late to define a Web strategy to gain Internet know-how and be ready for the arrival of these mainstream customers.
But knowing e-consumers is not enough to understand all the challenges on the Web. Internet environment has its own rules and more transparency implies an increasing apparent supply with correlatively pressure on prices leading at the end to prices responding to demand. Forrester calls this environment Dynamic Trade, which requires Internet businesses to scale up fast with huge investments in marketing and technology to gain a necessary critical mass. It's a big change compared to industrial age economic conditions as we find there a typical Information environment presented by Carl Shapiro and Hal R. Varian in their book Information Rules where you need to invest importantly before arriving to marginal cost near zero. It also explains why start-ups needed so much money from venture capitalists to set up their businesses.
If the first message we received is that moving to the Web is demanding important investments, we discover later that start-ups are creating a new revenue mix by focusing on new customers, new value, and new pricing structures, which undermine traditional revenue streams. Mary Modahl is illustrating this strategy by well-presented experiences she got in classified advertising, travel agents, and brokerage business environments.
Dynamic Trade being so open to competition, is it possible to build some competitive advantage? The answer is yes through experiential branding, physical distribution control, and consumer information leverage. This part of the book is important because it shows how organizations can built a competitive advantage on the specificities of Web environment. We do not often see such ideas so clearly developed.
But are traditional companies able to move to this new environment? The answer is also yes if they are able to defy the gravity of the old ways of doing business. First, the attitude towards technology must be changed. Because of importance of technology choices to gain market share, technology must be integrated in a "Whole View" including marketing and business strategy. It's also necessary to use the best technology and to integrate new technologies, which are ripe for consumer markets. That means that technology managers need to move from a mission critical to a mission re-defining. Traditional companies need also to solve their distribution channel conflicts to have chance to enter the Internet market space. Mary Modahl is explaining there that they have no choice and is developing in her book a strategy to solve distribution channels conflicts. Finally traditional companies need to find the best organization to move to the Web. Three different strategies: wholesale transformation, risk balancing, and venture capital participation are presented with sound examples.
But the final word is that winners to gain the battle for Internet customers can be among either start-ups or traditional companies if they have the will to win.
Mary Modahl's book is a well written, easy reading contribution to understand the Web environment and is going much further than how to win Internet consumers with a complete set of strategies for start-ups as for traditional companies. Mary Modahl's own experience is also adding to the interest of this book, which is illustrated all along the pages with pertinent examples taken in real life.
I can only recommend this book to every executive, who wants to be part of the "New Economy".
A fast-track guide to predicting web success!.......2001-01-03
An easy read, but contains some keys to understanding your customer base, and better yet, predicting who will actually purchase product off your website. This book, combined with your understanding of your customers, could save you a lot of wasted time and energy going after the wrong customer segment, or putting up content that is inappropriate for the people visiting (or not visiting) your website.
The best e-Commerce book I've read, a must read for anyone in charge of setting e-Commerce strategy. Nice going, Mary!
Too easy to read.......2000-10-06
This book is easy to read on the beach. However, it doesn't contain any new information. Regular readers of the business section of a newspaper know many similar examples described in the book. If you have attended once a marketing class, you should know the rest. This book is intended for people knowing nothing about marketing or e-commerce.

Book Description
A beautiful, successful and privileged seventeen-year-old, Carlana Stone Lawson had it all: she was a gymnast, cheerleader and president of her class. In a moment of bad judgment, she got into a car with some friends in Dallas, Texas, after a night of drinking. A terrible accident occurred, and everyone walked away unscathed except for Carlana, who never walked again.
This is Carlana's story of how she dealt with and overcame adversity. In the telling of it, she also shows how adversity can be successfully conquered in many areas, including divorce, loss of job and livelihood, survival of abuse, losing a loved one, devastating midlife crisis and battling breast cancer.
Today, Carlana, though wheelchair-bound, skydives, skis, and at thirty-six, has married the man of her dreams. This book will make you weep, laugh and, above all, inspire you.

This book is a hard to read book. I just haven't been able to get through it and I am not sure I will. I do admire Carlana for all she has been through with greatness.
Biography / Self-help .......2006-10-13
I'm a recent college grad, and believe that I am going through the stage called the "Quarterlife Crisis." I'm trying to find myself, and make sense of what is happening with me, and around me during these first few years of my twenties. I saw this book while I was vacationing in Anchorage, Alaska, and I flipped through it because the title of the book caught my eye. This book is not only about Carlana's struggle with her disability, but I especially like the self-help exercises that she included after each chapter. They make you examine your life, and realize that you cannot stop living no matter how tough life can be. Although this book has some grammatical errors and omitted words, Carlana's overall message is helping me to understand that I need to keep going, and to accept the challenges that life brings.
amazing and inspiring story.......2006-06-22
At 17, Carlana Stone was an active gymnast, cheerleader, and social leader at her school. One night of bad judgement changed everything when she drove home with drunken friends. They got in a car accident and she was paralyzed from the waist down for the rest of her life.
With incredible honesty and candor, Carlana tells us the story of how she never gave up on herself and realized her dreams - even using her disability to make those dreams come true. Carlana truly gives hope and inspiration to everyone - and especially women - that we do not have to be victims and that we can make our lives what we want them to be.
Inspiring Story..One which EVERYONE should read!.......2006-03-13
What an incredible story! Carlana makes you realize that life throws its punches, but you can definitely make positive choices that will make you happy in life. And now, her newest accomplishment of being the FIRST AMERICAN PARAPLEGIC WOMAN to FLY SOLO exemplifies her determination and gusto for life. Her story alone is motivational, but the lessons and suggestions with each chapter make it a cut above the rest! Kudos to this amazing woman..
A truly inspirational book.......2006-01-05
This is truly an inspirational book. At one level, it is the story of Carlana Stone Lawson and her struggle to overcome a crippling accident as a teenager. Carlana and co-author John Di Rienzo take us along on the subsequent journey that completely transformed her life. We are witness to her struggles to overcome life's adversities (so many of which we can all identify with), and watch as she discovers her inner strength and beauty, and finds success and love in her life again. But at another level, this book provides us with a window through which to examine and learn about ourselves. The intimacy and honesty with which she shares her life's story provides us with an opportunity to grow. Like Carlana, we all face challenges and experience pain in our lives. But we discover along with Carlana that we are not alone in the challenges we sometimes face - and can grow past adversity to enjoy new, more exciting experiences in our lives. And we learn that it's okay to seek help from others, to share our experiences, and to gain strength from one another. But perhaps most important of all, Carlana demonstrates how we can find the strength within ourselves to constantly grow - and live life to the fullest. This book had a positive impact on my life, and I think it's inevitable that it will for many others. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and highly recommend it.

A Non-Stop Reader.......2002-03-06
Once beginning to read this book, it is very difficult to put it down. A most captivating account of this man's fall into a lifestyle of homosexual behavior, his struggle to understand it and to eventually come out of it. I am amazed to realize that this man could have been my best friend, or acquaintance at work, and I would never have even known he was gay. The book is interlaced with humor, a mix of comedy and tragedy, ending in triumph. Especially interesting is the final chapter, a step by step suggested formula for understanding and overcoming homosexuality. You can't argue with this man's point of view. He's obviously been there and knows what he's talking about. It must have taken a lot of courage to speak so openly about his life, past and present. I strongly recommend this book to anyone struggling with the homosexual issue, whether for himself, or in the interest of someone else. FIVE STARS!!
