When you read a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher you enter a special world where emotions sing from the heart. A world that lovingly captures the ties that bind us to one another-the joys and sorrows, heartbreaks and misunderstandings, and glad, perfect moments when we are in true harmony. A world filled with evocative, engrossing, and above all, enjoyable portraits of people's lives and loves, tenderly laid open for us....At twenty-seven, Virginia Keile had been through the most intense experiences life had to offer-a magical first love ending in heartbreak, a suitable marriage, motherhood, and widowhood. All she wanted now was to take her daughter and son to a seaside cottage and help them recover. But Virginia's true love was there, waiting, hoping, praying that this time she would be strong enough to seize happiness.Customer Reviews:

Charming Pilcher story.......2006-05-22
One of the best romances I've ever read!!!.......2004-03-08
It all starts when Virginia takes a trip with her mother. She meets a man and falls in love. Before anything can become of this, her mother drags her away.
She eventually marries and has two children: Cara and Nicholas.
When her husband dies, she returns to Porthkerris where she'd
met her first love.
The rest is just too delicious, and in my opinion,
Rosamunde Pilcher is one of the best writers, and we're lucky to
have her:)

A wonderful new omnibus edition of three full-length novels by one of America's favorites.Customer Reviews:
Lavishly romantic, 3 from the 1970s.......2003-01-18
Under Gemini -- Improbability, coincidence and pure fate take center stage as identical twins separated at birth come upon their mirror image quite accidentally while in a London restaurant. After a night spent puzzling through the bizarre circumstances of their lives, jet-setting sister Rose takes off to Greece -- leaving her much more down-to-earth twin Flora to deal with a recently dumped fiancé. Somehow Flora is convinced to accompany the fiancé to Scotland to comfort a grandmother who is supposedly dying. The drama mounts, as does the dishonesty, and Flora finds herself living a life she never imagined. When the house of cards begins to collapse, will the friendships survive the betrayal? And, has the right sister fallen for the wrong man? A bit of a relic, but cozy as a cup of tea on a cold and windy Scottish coast.
The Empty House -- An anachronism in the form of a delightfully romantic fairy tale. From the cliffs of Cornwall to a near castle in Scotland, our not-so-modern-day fairy princess finds herself (at age 27) the widow of Prince Not So Charming. Despite the fact the deceased Prince was unfaithful and domineering and only married the young girl to achieve his inheritance, it is still a little tough feeling sorry for the Poor Little Rich Girl, who has never worked a day in her life (nor will she ever have to). Finally, she is free to be herself and she ships her young children off with Nanny to her mother-in-law in London. She then returns to the Cornwall coast and the memory of a few chance encounters of her 17-year-old self with a local farmer. Rejecting the comfort and pampering of friends, she leases a modest home near Porthkerris, fires the Nanny and reclaims her children. But can she do it? And can the combine man of the cozy hearth really win the heart of the Pampered Princess? This is an early Pilcher, with very idealistic (and out of touch) plotting but the heavenly glimpses of home and heart and her beloved countryside quite save the book.
The Day of the Storm -- After a very unconventional upbringing, Rebecca Bayliss has found bliss in her dull life working in a London book shop and living in a solitary flat she is slowly furnishing. For once she is in control of her life, and quite content. But her mother's latest lover writes that her mother is dying, and Rebecca must hurry to Ibiza. There Rebecca finally learns of her family in Cornwall and the famous artist grandfather she's never known but whom she feels compelled to inform of his daughter's death. The story is full of unusual coincidences (sometimes called fate?) and makes several abrupt turns before reaching a surprise of an ending. While Pilcher lavishly paints the background of her books, a map would have really been lovely in this one.

England's Empty Throne: Usurpation and the Language of Legitimation, 1399-1422
Paul Strohm Manufacturer: Yale University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0300075448 |
Book Description
After the dethronement and subsequent murder of Richard II, the usurping Lancastrian dynasty faced an exceptional challenge. Interrupting a long period of Plantagenet rule, Henry IV and Henry V needed not only to establish physical possession of the English throne but to occupy it symbolically as well. In this boldly revisionary book, Paul Strohm provides a new account of the Lancastrian revolution and its aftermath.Integrating techniques of literary and historical analysis, he reveals the Lancastrian monarchs as masters of outward display, persuasively "performing" their kingship through a variety of novel ceremonies in a quest for legitimacy. He also describes far-reaching Lancastrian experiments in domination, including the proscription of prophecy; the enlistment of poetry as court propaganda; the extensive use of spies and informers; and, most ambitiously, the redefinition of treason to cover not only overt deeds but words and thoughts as well.
Strohm's account of the Lancastrian quest for legitimacy, and the uses of symbolic power, illuminatesindeed, recastsour understanding of a period of unprecedented political upheaval.

Not bad, when it gets rolling........2003-09-23
I haven't yet figured out whether to be amused, intrigued, or distressed by this book. The distress is minimal, but there; anyone even remotely familiar with the white power movement is likely to have alarm bells going off in their heads when reading this (especially Moore's sporadic referrals to the Zionist Occupied Government, an almost ubiquitous term among with white power crowd). We'll give Mr. Moore the benefit of the doubt and assume he, and his many rave reviewers are naïve to the present connotations of the term.
The Land of Empty Houses is set in post-plague Middle America sometime in the twenty-first century. Daniel, an AWOL Ranger, and Robert, a ZOG-employed assassin, hunt one another over the landscape. Daniel learns from an insane acquaintance that a pretty-eyed woman named Deborah is looking for him. She finds him soon enough, and asks him to guide her to the various tribes that haunt the wasteland now known as the Interior. She is a missionary, a healer, an evangelist, and basically the last Christian west of the Mississippi. Their journey, and how it affects Daniel, is the meat of the novel.
As I've come to expect from Christian fiction, the message greatly overwhelms the medium far too many times. Which is something of a shame, because Moore spins himself a fine adventure yarn when he gets going. The book is an easy read, the characters are well-drawn (though Daniel, for all his not being willing to either search his own soul or ask questions about Deborah's mission, seems a little too lucid for his own character), and the pacing is letter perfect. Once you reconcile the idea with the setting-and really, the healer bringing her gifts to the great unwashed is a pretty common fantasy figure-the book has the potential to become an above-average futuristic fantasy. It should be obvious to the well-rounded reader of Christian fiction that it's possible to write a good fantasy novel and still get one's evangelical point across (C.S. Lewis' trilogy that begins with Out of the Silent Planet is an obvious example). Moore, like the vast majority of writers both amateur and professional, is unconvinced of this. He is determined that subtlety is lost on the masses, and in order to get his point across, he must wrap it around a week-old fish stew and hit us in the face with it. Repeatedly.
Despite the excess of evangelism (which despite the above does confine itself to a few pages at a time here and there), the book is, quite simply, a fun read. I wish I could say it makes you think, but it would prefer to do your thinking for you. If you're looking for good Christian allegory that's exceptionally presented, you're better off with Lewis, Mauriac, or even Tolkein; if you want to turn your brain off and relax a while, and can allow the evangelism to roll off your back, Moore's just the ticket for a good adventure tale. ** ½
An Allegory of Beauty and Dread.......2002-06-02
His main character, Daniel, is an AWOL lieutenant on the run through the wastelands of an America devasted by plague. Chased by Robert, another Army-trained assassin, Daniel comes upon groups of religious zealots, cannibals, and babbling fools. With little emotion, Daniel faces these challenges. The real test comes when a beautiful woman named Deborah enters the picture. Soon Daniel is serving as Deborah's guide, unaware that she will become much more the guide than he. Along the way, they will face love, death, horror, and redemption.
Moore's writing, as always, is lean and sparkling, with sentences full of wisdom and spiritual themes. His dialogue between Daniel and Deborah brings the story to dazzling life. The repartee is dry and witty and full of character. Although I appreciated some of the allegorical elements further along, I felt they were a distraction from the totally absorbing relationship between the two main characters. As the allegorical section faded, once again Daniel and Deborah are thrust together (although in very different roles) and surprises are revealed that lead to a life and death confrontation. Moore foreshadows his major surprise quite well (so well, I guess, that I had it figured out half way through the book), but the message is still effective and I highly recommend the book.
