Book Description

When you read a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher you enter a special world where emotions sing from the heart. A world that lovingly captures the ties that bind us to one another-the joys and sorrows, heartbreaks and misunderstandings, and glad, perfect moments when we are in true harmony. A world filled with evocative, engrossing, and above all, enjoyable portraits of people's lives and loves, tenderly laid open for us....At twenty-seven, Virginia Keile had been through the most intense experiences life had to offer-a magical first love ending in heartbreak, a suitable marriage, motherhood, and widowhood. All she wanted now was to take her daughter and son to a seaside cottage and help them recover. But Virginia's true love was there, waiting, hoping, praying that this time she would be strong enough to seize happiness.

4 out of 5 stars Revel in Rekindled Love on the Beaches of Cornwall.......2007-06-28

Many years before THE SHELL SEEKERS propelled Rosamunde Pilcher to international fame, she wrote a string of romantic tales to satisfy a hungry heart. THE EMPTY HOUSE is, in my opinion, one of the more endearing.

Virginia Keile had a magical first love that ended in heartbreak. She later married a handsome socialite and bore two adorable children. Yet, the memory of that lost first love haunted her for ten long years. After her husband's tragic death, Virginia returns once again to the English seaside and seeks to find out why Eustace Phillips rejected her.

Pilcher, famous for her cozy descriptions of English life and beloved for the ambience she creates in her novels, does not fail us in this one. We move between the exquisite Cornwall home where Virginia is a guest to the Scottish manor she has left behind as well as Bosithick, the empty house in Cornwall that she makes her own.

How Virginia learns to assert herself, to take control of her own children away from her strong-minded mother-in-law and the family nanny, makes for a light and entertaining reading experience. The reader is not only transported to Pilcher's idyllic Cornwall with all its magic, but to a woman's first love and the path to recapturing a past she could never forget.

4 out of 5 stars Love wins in the end.......2006-12-11

Another Rosamunde Pilcher story where events slowly, but inexorably, after a major detour, lead the protagonist, onto a point where she allows true love to enter her life.

Virginia Parsons meets her true-love-to-be, Eustace Philips, when she is seventeen during a holiday in Cornwall. She wants to pursue the relation, but her ambitious mother has other plans and bundles her off to London, in effect, squashing the relationship in the bud. Virginia is married off to the rich and stylish Anthony Kylie. Ten years and two children later, Anthony dies in a car accident, and Virginia returns to Cornwall, presumably for a holiday. Quite soon, she meets the still unattached Eustace, who provokes her into taking charge of her life and not let others run it for her. Virginia does so, she finds a place to stay near Eustace, dismisses the nurse who has tended her children since birth and takes charge of them herself. It does not take long before she meets Eustace and the proverbial happy ending ensues.

This story may be hard to believe, but Rosamunde Pilcher, with her inimitable and subtle narrative style, manages to carry it off and lend to the tale, a strong dose of credibility. According to her, the greatest virtue is to be true to yourself, in that clothing, true love and passion can reveal itself. In her novels, the villains present a false front, which they are always trying to live upto. Because we all instinctively know these simple truths, reading a Pilcher novel is extremely refreshing like a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. One resonates at once.

Great Reading.

5 out of 5 stars Charming Pilcher story.......2006-05-22

If you have never read Rosamund Pilcher, you are missing a real treat!

This book is filled with wonderful, great, superb descriptions of English farming life in Cornwall! Pilcher weaves word in a way that makes you feel that right outside your own window lies the sea and lowing cattle. When reading this book, I could feel the rain on my face, smell the sea-salt air, hear the mewling of the kittens that Cara and Nicholas carried out of Eustace's barn, taste the ice cream that Eustace got for Virginia!

I must say that I have to disagree with some of the reviewers about the main character Virginia being a spoiled brat. She had been domineered by her mother, mother-in-law, husband, and Nanny her entire life. She didn't know how to stand on her own two feet. She wanted a "normal" life, away from the elitism of the British upper class. She even mentioned this to Anthony. She said it made her feel sad to see husbands and wives with their children carrying packages to their beat up cars and in Anthonys view they had nothing. However, Virginia saw that they had much, much more then she could ever dream of having. I think that is where the title of this book, The Empty House, hit home with me. Sure, she had a huge country estate in Scotland and a round of parties to go to with everyone waiting on her hand and foot, but the house was empty. Not like Penfolda, Eustaces farm house, where everything smelled of "baking bread" and "manury." It was a real home, filled with real life. And this is what she was trying to re-create at the home she rented.

As far as Virginia and Eustace coming together after four meetings, that is part of the charm of a Pilcher book. Pure escapism. If her mother had given her the phone messages and letter, who knows what could have happened. They may have gotten together a whole lot sooner, but then, there wouldn't have been much of a plot!

If you read this book for nothing else, do read it for the descriptions of Cornish life. I promise that you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best romances I've ever read!!!.......2004-03-08

This was a quick read for me, and the second book I've read by
Rosamunde Pilcher, the other being Shell Seekers. I love her
writing style. She's included the perfect things for me to truly
enjoy a book: kids and animals.

It all starts when Virginia takes a trip with her mother. She meets a man and falls in love. Before anything can become of this, her mother drags her away.

She eventually marries and has two children: Cara and Nicholas.
When her husband dies, she returns to Porthkerris where she'd
met her first love.

The rest is just too delicious, and in my opinion,
Rosamunde Pilcher is one of the best writers, and we're lucky to
have her:)

4 out of 5 stars Cliffs of Cornwall and Wilds of Scotland.......2003-01-18

An anachronism in the form of a delightfully romantic fairy tale. From the cliffs of Cornwall to a near castle in Scotland, our not-so-modern-day fairy princess finds herself (at age 27) the widow of Prince Not So Charming. Despite the fact the deceased Prince was unfaithful and domineering and only married the young girl to achieve his inheritance, it is still a little tough feeling sorry for the Poor Little Rich Girl, who has never worked a day in her life (nor will she ever have to). Finally, she is free to be herself and she ships her young children off with Nanny to her mother-in-law in London. She then returns to the Cornwall coast and the memory of a few chance encounters of her 17-year-old self with a local farmer. Rejecting the comfort and pampering of friends, she leases a modest home near Porthkerris, fires the Nanny and reclaims her children. But can she do it? And can the combine man of the cozy hearth really win the heart of the Pampered Princess? This is an early Pilcher, with very idealistic (and out of touch) plotting but the heavenly glimpses of home and heart and her beloved countryside quite save the book.

    Book Description

Chosen to represent the United States at the 46th Venice Biennale, Bill Viola, a New York artist living on the West Coast, is recognized internationally for his work in video and sound installations. This book brings together a selection of essays, notebook entries, drawings, and descriptions of projects that map Viola's personal course through the readings, observations, experiments, and associations that form the groundwork for his art. Each work illustrated is accompanied by a description by the artist, as well as comments on the work's origins from the artist's notebooks.

For the last 25 years, Viola has used innovative multimedia technologies to explore the phenomena of sense perception as a language of the body and avenue to self-knowledge, integrating many disciplines and philosophies to reveal contemporary art's relevance to the modern world. His views have deep roots in mysticism, poetry, philosophy, Eastern art, shamanism, Chinese Taoism, Sufism, and Zen Buddhism. Viola's chief concerns today are to draw attention to the upset ecological balance of nature by focusing on the connection between our inner and outer lives, on the conception of the self as part of the whole.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lavishly romantic, 3 from the 1970s.......2003-01-18

Three absolutely delicious tales from Rosemunde Pilcher, re-released but all with copyright dates in the 1970s. For the most part, the stories have aged well - though this is a different millenia, a different century, and certainly different times.

Under Gemini -- Improbability, coincidence and pure fate take center stage as identical twins separated at birth come upon their mirror image quite accidentally while in a London restaurant. After a night spent puzzling through the bizarre circumstances of their lives, jet-setting sister Rose takes off to Greece -- leaving her much more down-to-earth twin Flora to deal with a recently dumped fiancé. Somehow Flora is convinced to accompany the fiancé to Scotland to comfort a grandmother who is supposedly dying. The drama mounts, as does the dishonesty, and Flora finds herself living a life she never imagined. When the house of cards begins to collapse, will the friendships survive the betrayal? And, has the right sister fallen for the wrong man? A bit of a relic, but cozy as a cup of tea on a cold and windy Scottish coast.

The Empty House -- An anachronism in the form of a delightfully romantic fairy tale.

The Day of the Storm -- After a very unconventional upbringing, Rebecca Bayliss has found bliss in her dull life working in a London book shop and living in a solitary flat she is slowly furnishing. For once she is in control of her life, and quite content. But her mother's latest lover writes that her mother is dying, and Rebecca must hurry to Ibiza. There Rebecca finally learns of her family in Cornwall and the famous artist grandfather she's never known but whom she feels compelled to inform of his daughter's death. The story is full of unusual coincidences (sometimes called fate?) and makes several abrupt turns before reaching a surprise of an ending. While Pilcher lavishly paints the background of her books, a map would have really been lovely in this one.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate romantic page-turner !.......2000-05-27

If you're not familiar with Rosamunde Pilcher yet, waste no time and buy yourself a sample of her spellbinding work ! It has it all : the warmth, the cosiness, the romance, and even the suspense. In "Under Gemini", meet sensible Flora, who discovers she has a twin sister she had never known about, the glamorous Rose, and suddenly finds herself in a whirlwind of deceipt, drama, confusion, and... love. And you will be mesmerised by "The Empty House" and "The Day of the Storm", two compelling stories about love and the pursuit of happiness. PS : The good news is : Rosamunde Pilcher has published lots of other novels and short stories : you have hours of cosy cocooning ahead of you !

Typical of its kind with lots of great photos of fabulous makeovers, requiring extensive remodeling and an architect. But it does have some concrete ideas that push it up a notch over the competition.

    5 out of 5 stars Outstanding resource.......2004-07-10

What an outstanding resource for empty-nesters looking to redefine their lives! The house is yours again, what do you want to do with it for the second-half of your life? I can't wait until the last child leaves so I can put so many of these examples to use. Well, I'll enjoy the time left and just use it to plan. The attractive photo of Todd Lawson is an added benefit.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book, somewhat mis-titled!.......2004-06-21

When I picked up this book, I thought it was for empty nesters and retirees who wanted to downsize or "undecorate" the kids out of their former rooms. Not so! These homes are for people who have lots of living and big plans for themselves. There are only a couple of places I would call "retirement" homes. The rest include homes with offices to make work life go along with home life, homes with studios for the fulfillment of dreams and even homes with guest wings and guest houses to welcome whole troops of extended family. Absolutely brimming with ideas.

5 out of 5 stars The House to Ourselves.......2004-05-05

I purchased this book for my parents who are planning on building. They absolutely loved it! It has lots of great ideas.

    5 out of 5 stars The Wiggins.......2004-04-01

We purchased this book hoping to find new ideas to fit our needs. It was obvious the authors researched the material at length and offered a variety of solutions that could be adaptable to any lifestyle. Lots of illustrations which helps visualization. We are able to incorporate many of the suggestions in this book to our remodeling projects. Now the hard part - tackling the hammer and nails.

        Book Description

After the dethronement and subsequent murder of Richard II, the usurping Lancastrian dynasty faced an exceptional challenge. Interrupting a long period of Plantagenet rule, Henry IV and Henry V needed not only to establish physical possession of the English throne but to occupy it symbolically as well. In this boldly revisionary book, Paul Strohm provides a new account of the Lancastrian revolution and its aftermath.

Integrating techniques of literary and historical analysis, he reveals the Lancastrian monarchs as masters of outward display, persuasively "performing" their kingship through a variety of novel ceremonies in a quest for legitimacy. He also describes far-reaching Lancastrian experiments in domination, including the proscription of prophecy; the enlistment of poetry as court propaganda; the extensive use of spies and informers; and, most ambitiously, the redefinition of treason to cover not only overt deeds but words and thoughts as well.

Strohm's account of the Lancastrian quest for legitimacy, and the uses of symbolic power, illuminates—indeed, recasts—our understanding of a period of unprecedented political upheaval.

A quick and enjoyable read, "The Land of Empty Houses" takes place in a post-civilization, Mad Max type of America. Plague, natural disaster and the collapse of the American government make the American West a home for insane folks, militia types, and cultists.

Moore's style is sparse and fast-moving. A couple of times he fails the subtlety test for relgion but it was one of the more unique books I have ever read.

            I give this one a B+

            5 out of 5 stars Great allegory!.......2007-03-14

I read this twice and the second time was where I really got revelation of the allegory the story depicts. The story was so tantalizing that the first read was a fly-through to see how it would all end. I have shared this with friends and they all loved it as well! The intricacy of the story is woven in a way that takes the reader into the journey with the characters. I would rate this one alongside Ted Dekker's circle trilogy and others.

            5 out of 5 stars Empty Houses.......2004-11-04

This book is totally different in the aspect that it say's things the adverage today type person wouldn't say. The Babblers in the book are very interresting, and Deborah is very stout and remains strong in her faith, even in the eye of death and Father delivers her. This book I believe would reach out even to the unbeliever and cause them to think about a few things in light of the way this story is told. I wish I could give a copy to a deathrow inmate I know in San Quentin, he's a devil worshipper, but I bet this would even touch his heart.

John L. Moore, The Land of Empty Houses (Broadman and Holman, 1998)

I haven't yet figured out whether to be amused, intrigued, or distressed by this book. The distress is minimal, but there; anyone even remotely familiar with the white power movement is likely to have alarm bells going off in their heads when reading this (especially Moore's sporadic referrals to the Zionist Occupied Government, an almost ubiquitous term among with white power crowd). We'll give Mr. Moore the benefit of the doubt and assume he, and his many rave reviewers are naïve to the present connotations of the term.

The Land of Empty Houses is set in post-plague Middle America sometime in the twenty-first century. Daniel, an AWOL Ranger, and Robert, a ZOG-employed assassin, hunt one another over the landscape. Daniel learns from an insane acquaintance that a pretty-eyed woman named Deborah is looking for him. She finds him soon enough, and asks him to guide her to the various tribes that haunt the wasteland now known as the Interior. She is a missionary, a healer, an evangelist, and basically the last Christian west of the Mississippi. Their journey, and how it affects Daniel, is the meat of the novel.

As I've come to expect from Christian fiction, the message greatly overwhelms the medium far too many times. Which is something of a shame, because Moore spins himself a fine adventure yarn when he gets going. The book is an easy read, the characters are well-drawn (though Daniel, for all his not being willing to either search his own soul or ask questions about Deborah's mission, seems a little too lucid for his own character), and the pacing is letter perfect. Once you reconcile the idea with the setting-and really, the healer bringing her gifts to the great unwashed is a pretty common fantasy figure-the book has the potential to become an above-average futuristic fantasy. It should be obvious to the well-rounded reader of Christian fiction that it's possible to write a good fantasy novel and still get one's evangelical point across (C.S. Lewis' trilogy that begins with Out of the Silent Planet is an obvious example). Moore, like the vast majority of writers both amateur and professional, is unconvinced of this. He is determined that subtlety is lost on the masses, and in order to get his point across, he must wrap it around a week-old fish stew and hit us in the face with it. Repeatedly.

Despite the excess of evangelism (which despite the above does confine itself to a few pages at a time here and there), the book is, quite simply, a fun read. I wish I could say it makes you think, but it would prefer to do your thinking for you. If you're looking for good Christian allegory that's exceptionally presented, you're better off with Lewis, Mauriac, or even Tolkein; if you want to turn your brain off and relax a while, and can allow the evangelism to roll off your back, Moore's just the ticket for a good adventure tale. ** ½

4 out of 5 stars An Allegory of Beauty and Dread.......2002-06-02

John L. Moore shines when writing of tough men living off a tough land. Here, by thrusting his ideas into an apocalyptic future, Moore once again tells of rugged people coming to grips with God's place in the hardships of life.

His main character, Daniel, is an AWOL lieutenant on the run through the wastelands of an America devasted by plague. Chased by Robert, another Army-trained assassin, Daniel comes upon groups of religious zealots, cannibals, and babbling fools. With little emotion, Daniel faces these challenges. The real test comes when a beautiful woman named Deborah enters the picture. Soon Daniel is serving as Deborah's guide, unaware that she will become much more the guide than he. Along the way, they will face love, death, horror, and redemption.

Moore's writing, as always, is lean and sparkling, with sentences full of wisdom and spiritual themes. His dialogue between Daniel and Deborah brings the story to dazzling life. The repartee is dry and witty and full of character. Although I appreciated some of the allegorical elements further along, I felt they were a distraction from the totally absorbing relationship between the two main characters. As the allegorical section faded, once again Daniel and Deborah are thrust together (although in very different roles) and surprises are revealed that lead to a life and death confrontation. Moore foreshadows his major surprise quite well (so well, I guess, that I had it figured out half way through the book), but the message is still effective and I highly recommend the book.
