Book Description

When you read a novel by Rosamunde Pilcher you enter a special world where emotions sing from the heart. A world that lovingly captures the ties that bind us to one another-the joys and sorrows, heartbreaks and misunderstandings, and glad, perfect moments when we are in true harmony. A world filled with evocative, engrossing, and above all, enjoyable portraits of people's lives and loves, tenderly laid open for us....After years in the United States, Jane returns to the tranquil Scottish estate, Elvie, where she spent a magical childhood. Memories of Elvie had always summoned the image of Sinclair, the rakish man Jane had once dreamed of marrying, but now that she is home, she finds Sinclair a different man. His charm has a purpose, and Jane can no longer trust him....or herself.

4 out of 5 stars End of Summer by Rosamunde Pilcher.......2007-06-09

I enjoyed this book a lot. It is a smooth-flowing book with a good plot, and the characters are very believable. Good Pilcher stuff!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Take A Trip Into the Comforting World of Rosamunde Pilcher.......2006-09-15

If you long for the warmth of an aga, dream of afternoon tea with freshly baked scones dripping with hot butter and Devonshire cream, and imagine gathering the dogs for an afternoon run through fields of heather, then Rosamunde Pilcher will surely delight you.

This is one of her earlier works, written years before she became an international best- seller, yet no less enjoyable in its own way. This is the story of young Jane Marsh who loses her mother and travels the US with her vagabond father for seven years. When the story picks up, Jane is twenty-one and called home to Elvie, her grandmother's lush estate in her native Scotland.

Jane is reunited not only with her beloved maternal grandmother, but also with Sinclair, the dashingly handsome cousin she has loved for a long as she can remember. His proposal of marriage is offset by revelations Jane uncovers about his character. A late-night phone call, a missing book, and the problem of an aging caretaker help Jane see Sinclair in a different light.

Meanwhile, there is David Stewart, the dependable family solicitor who is always there with his competence, his dependability, and his growing infatuation with Jane.

Illusions are shattered and new alliances formed as the reader enjoys a cozy romance as only Rosamunde Pilcher can deliver.

4 out of 5 stars --Another pleasant story by Rosamunde Pilcher--.......2004-11-18

THE END OF SUMMER is the story of Jane Marsh, a young woman of Scottish heritage who has been brought up in California. Jane lost her mother when she was very young and her father, a writer, relocated to the United States. One night, David Stewart, an attorney, arrives from Scotland and Jane learns that her grandmother wants her to come back for a visit. The loving memories of Elvie, her grandmother's home resurface and Jane finds it a perfect time to go since her father seems to have finally found a woman to love.

Jane feels that returning to Scotland is just what she needed. David Stewart turns out to be a great guy and becomes a trusted companion. She and her grandmother are delighted to be reunited and being back at Elvie is wonderful. The only problem is her cousin Sinclair. He was the companion of her youth, he's handsome and dynamic and she's always loved him.

This is not Pilcher's best book, but still worth reading.

3 out of 5 stars This is an older book.......2004-01-10

The reason this feels less in-depth than Pilcher's major novels is that this is actually an early novel that was re-released after she became a bestseller. Not to worry -- she is currently working on a new one, due out by Fall 2004. Meanwhile, try Winter Solstice and September, both of which I liked even better than The Shell Seekers......

3 out of 5 stars A good but not perfect Pilcher outing.......2000-11-27

If you have never read Rosamunde Pilcher, start with Coming Home or The Shell Seekers or even the recent Winter Solstice. All are great representives of Pilcher's unique character-driven novels. This one, though fine, is too short in length as well as in character detail. It is a fine little "Pilcher fix", if you are a fan.

1 out of 5 stars Will the REAL Pamela Morsi start writing again - Please!.......2005-11-09

I agree with "Mitzi" and "Casual Reader" as well - word for word. I could especially relate to the Mitzi's comment about "all of the sudden the dad is at the birth". I was as confused as hell! I read another couple of chapters trying to see if things would improve. But...I just got more mixed up. Finally....I gave up, and started re-reading "Sweetwater Bride".

I really have enjoyed reading ALL of Ms Morsi's Historical Romance novels. There aren't too many authors out there that write American Historical novels - and Ms. Morsi did it wall. LaVyrle Spencer is another-but, she's retired. I'm not a big fan of the "countess", "dutchess", "duke"...etc. type of Historical Romances...and the book shelves are packed with them. There aren't enough writers that focus on regular folks set in America's 1800s-early 1900's.

I really miss the Historical Romances that Pamela Morsi was known for. Until she discovers that her fan base is clammering for more of these - we'll have to find a substitute author. Any suggestions?

1 out of 5 stars Who is writing Pamela Morsi's books? Certainly not Ms Morsi.......2005-11-06

All I can say is I am SO VERY disappointed in the recent books of Ms Morsi. I, like Mitiz who wrote a review 2/6/05, used to buy ANYTHING Ms Morsi would write, w/o reading the back of the book or any reviews. I was confident they would be delicious. Not any more. I totally agree with Mitizi's review. I can't express it any better, she says it all. When Ms Morsi returns to writing her books, instead of this unknown person who has written her books for the past 4 years, I will, once again, buy anything w/ her name on it. Please bring her back soon, I miss her moving, down to earth, characters you hate to see their story end. Her contemporary books leave me cold. I will be more discerning.

5 out of 5 stars making you think.......2005-11-06

I loved this book.. this is the first book by this author that I have read, and I am going to look for more.. It really made me think,, was a little confusing at first, but I loved how she showed what "might have been"....

1 out of 5 stars I want the old Pamela Morsi back.......2005-08-01

I've been disappointed by her shift from historical romances to comtemporary fiction.
I love her older books, which make me laugh and cry no matter how many times i've read them.
To dear ms. morsi, please go back to your former writing style. I miss that literary voice.

    3 out of 5 stars A good read........2005-06-15

It takes cancer to reunite a long shattered family. Dawn Leland always felt as if her in-laws saw her as not good enough to be married to their son, so after his tragic death, she took her two little girls and left. Now, stricken by a deadly disease, she takes them back to their father's family so Sierra and Dakota can be cared for as she battles for her life. Through flashbacks, readers learn how they arrived at this point, seeing the happier times in contrast to the present forward struggle.

*** At first blush, this book could be a truly depressing one. Cancer and death have a plethora of emotions that Ms. Morsi has captured perfectly, yet there is a thread of hope that emerges that will be comforting to the all too many people out there who are intimately familiar with this scenario. ***

When events conspire to irrevocably alter Deanna Duras's comfortable but empty life, Pandora's box can never again be closed. Over the course of a single summer, Deanna discovers her husband is cheating on her, begins a successful painting career, loses her 16-year-old daughter Pilar in a tragic motorcycle accident, and meets the love of her life, Ben Thompson--a highly respected art dealer who plans and executes a phenomenally profitable show for her. Only a creation of Danielle Steel's can accomplish so much in such a short time (as the rest of the world watches reruns on television!). Matters are complicated further when Deanna discovers she is pregnant; is the baby her husband's or her lover's? At summer's end, Deanna will have to decide between returning to her old life or following her heart. --Alison Trinkle

4 out of 5 stars A great beach or poolside read.......2006-03-22

Typical Danielle Steel fluff, but one of her better books. A little of everything: love, betrayal, tragedy, and hope.

4 out of 5 stars Summers End but another beginning.......2005-09-06

What I love most about Danielle Steel is that her books are always the beginning to a better life for the main character, and this one is no different. She has had, in my opinion, some ups and downs in her writing over the last few years but this is one of the ups for her.

    4 out of 5 stars Would Reccomend.......2005-08-14

I usually don't even browse through a DS book. For some reason I bought and read this one. I couldn't put it down, could hardly stand to take a break to sleep. I did cheer for Deanna&Ben. Cried my eyes out over Pilar, even though her character in the book was totally unlovable. I did get frustrated in the end with Deanna and her reasoning behind not contacting Ben about the baby. The visual descriptions make you feel like you're really there. I liked the fact that Danielle and Ben felt an immediate attraction to each other and didn't play games about their feelings. The ending is a let down though. The epilogue should have been set a few years down the road. I loved it when Marc realized he had gotten the short end of the stick after all. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the poor editing and the not-so-great ending. Would reccomend.

        Book Description

The Lost Summer is a vital and necessary re evaluation of an era which is in danger of being written off as worthless and trivial- the era of mid-twentieth century British theatre. Taking the career of one man, Frith Banbury, and actor/producer/director who was active throughout this period, Charles Duff revisits many of the best productions, actors, and playwrights of these years, recreating significant action both on and off the stage. Banbury worked with all the luminaries of this time- John Gielgud, Peggy Ashcroft, Michael Redgrave, and others--and has been an invaluable source of first-hand knowledge and informed opinion. This book will alter many mind-sets and provoke many rediscoveries.

        Family Affair

To their respective families, Jack Wells and Amy Legend are outsiders. A free-spirited man-of-all-trades who takes life as it comes, Jack is far different from both his mother, the ever-organized widow of an admiral, and his methodical lawyer sister. And Amy, a professional athlete with exquisite taste and golden beauty, has a glamorous career a world apart from her bookish older siblings and college professor father.

When Jack's mother marries Amy's widowed father, the newlyweds invite all the children to spend the summer at the Legends' retreat in northern Minnesota. While their parents hoped they'd all like each other, they hadn't counted on just how well Jack and Amy would get along. For affection unexpectedly flares into a burning attraction that threatens to destroy already fragile bonds. Caught between long-simmering conflicts and clashing personalities, Jack and Amy agree to deny their desire until the vacation is over. But it seems the more they resist, the deeper they find themselves falling in love. With passion this strong, how can they possibly wait 'til

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I hated to see it end!.......2002-07-16

I connected right away with Gwen and Hal and their children. One of the things I enjoyed was the fact that some of the story centered around Iowa City, Iowa and the university there. A place where we spent six wonderful years visiting our kids. But that aside, I could easily identify in some way with many of the characters. Every family has the dysfunctional Joyce, the overachieving Holly, the trying to prove herself Amy etc.

On those long summer nights in Minnesota, the reader could become a part of the Legend famiy. From getting the feel of sleeping there during a summer storm, sitting around the campfire, and the simple decor of the cabins, we in some way long to be a part of that simple no frills kind of vacation.

Jack and Amy, our two lovers, connected instantly, but for the sake of the family, put their emotions on hold. Their relationship is sweet and brief, but on that, they build a strong and sure love. While a fair amount of time is spent dealing with the problems of the other characters, the attraction of Jack and Amy is the main thrust of the book. I only wish that we had been let to experience more than their one brief, intimate encounter at the lake. Still though, maybe that innocence is what makes the book so special. In that one aspect, much is left to our recommendation.

I would for sure keep this book to read again, as well and look for other Seidel titles.

        5 out of 5 stars KSD-the most under-appreciated author of our times.......2000-10-16

I have been a heavy-duty Kathleen fan since the first book of hers I picked up. Imagine my excitement at finding a new one... and my chagrin at finding it had been out for months! I believe that Kathleen is one of the most satisfying authors currently writing. I find her characters to be interesting and consistant, and I find the growth the main characters always experience to be reasonable and believable. I just can't figure out why her publisher doesn't apparently make any push to sell her books to people who have never heard of her! Everyone I have ever lent her books to loved them, and this one is no exception.

        5 out of 5 stars A wonderful summers escape with Summer's End.......2000-08-14

There are already 20 reviews, and I don't want to bore anyone, but I've loved KGS for years now. She writes romances with depth and feeling, and with lovely sentences. I don't know why she remains so underrated, and that's why I decided to add my review to the list - to convince the dabblers that this is a book worth investing in - I've kept all my KGS books, but this one, Summer's End, is especially light drenched. It's got wonderful side characters, with lots of interesting and real conflict between sisters and coping with family pain.

My only criticism is that we don't really get enough interaction between the lovers, we could have had a few more pages on them, but that is a minor quibble. You meet a whole host of characters that feel like friends and you don't want the book to end. Indeed I sincerely hope that she uses some of the other characters here in a new book or three - that's how close you felt to them.

4 out of 5 stars engrossing story of angst ridden family members.......2000-07-03

Seidel writes skillfully and her books are always absorbing. However, her characters always sound like they're psychoanalyzing themselves and this gets quite exhausting to the reader. Too many points of view are represented, and I always feel like I need to escape from all their problems! Yet I am always eager to read each new book despite my conviction that Ms. Seidel takes her characters a bit too seriously.

        5 out of 5 stars A Shining Talent.......2000-03-16

Summer's End was all I could have wished of a book. Not only because it took place largely in wonderful northern Minnesota, but because every character was so real, so "touchable." I'm sure Ms Seidel doesn't recall meeting me in Washington, D.C. in the early 1980's at a Romance Writer's convention in the Mayflower Hotel, but I never forgot her. She's not only a terrific writer. She's a really neat person. Thanks for Summer's End, Kathleen.

This is a fascinating book that seems to take place in 50s Japan. The book stars Tomoko an independent and successful woman, who has made a name for herself for her kimono designs. She is the longtime mistress of Shingo a man ten years her senior who is an unsucessful novelist. Then there is Ryota, Tomoko's lover from before she met Shingo and with who she sees again after they are reacquainted. The novel's basic theme is the struggles Tomoko goes through with balancing the two affairs, and her guilt of being intimate with Shingo because of his marriage. This is a good book, and the author depicts quite well the disipating of long time relationships

4 out of 5 stars Touching Love Stories.......2007-05-20

This book is not really a romantic suspense. And thank goodness for that because the three main characters are way too interesting for Taylor to whittle away the word count on a large suspense subplot. So I'm reviewing MSNE as a traditional romance, suspense element be-damned.

After MSNE's first two chapters, I tagged Rissa as beige: low on excitement but always pleasant. I thought of her like that because though she'd had all her clothes, money and tickets stolen, we don't meet her at the American Embassy wailing at an advisor, we don't see her in a police station demanding the thieves be apprehended, we don't hear her on the phone begging her bank manager back home to FedEx her new credit card...no. She's heading to a bookstore somewhere in France to see if she could get a job there to tide her over till she gets enough money to go home. And Rissa hasn't whined yet.

Rissa has been through a lot in her short life (the sad details of which I won't spoiler here, but its enough to get you scampering to a doctor for a check-up) but she never bawls - she never even seems to *think* - `Why me Lord, why me?'. It's only when Taylor took us past her public face of composure to the emotional distress underneath, I realized, this girl is anything but beige.

Evan is a wonderful hero. He's entrepreneurial; he's successful (black man in France running tings? Hello!); he loves his sister; he wants to be a Daddy; and his butt is round, firm and looks good in jeans. This, we all know, is a deal maker.

Since we're discussing romance, you may take it as a given that the chemistry between the two characters will always work, but that's rarely the case. Many romance novels - particularly the suspense hybrids - suffer from poor protagonist chemistry. Happy to say we get both emotional connection and nice sexual chemistry here. After making Rissa and Evan believable - and likeable - as individuals, Taylor made their attraction authentic as well.

The conflict between them is real and given the set-up for most of the story where Evan pays Rissa (but not for *that* - untwist yer knickers while you crawl out the gutter), I liked that she managed it as more client-consultant than employer-employee. Not beige.

Now romance aside, let me talk a little bit about the love stories. These are the elements I actually enjoyed the most and wished they could have been fleshed out more if Taylor had had more space to play with. The love stories are between:

          1) Rissa and Frankie. Their friendship was interesting. For most of the novel I wasn't sure how the dynamics would evolve but you don't see too many (healthy) relationships between the heroine and a teenage girl where the heroine isn't her guardian or her nanny or her bestest bestest friend evah! Frankie is a spoilt, annoying teen but a realistic one. I don't know if I would have had the patience Rissa showed in dealing with her, but then again, I would have been the one demanding my credit card by overnight delivery.

          2) Frankie and Evan. I didn't cry but I could have teared up. Rissa isn't the only one with a tragic story in MSNE and at some points I just wanted to jump into the book and say: Group Hug everybody! Group Hug!!! The age difference between the two of them accounted for a lot of their issues because Evan found it hard to navigate through the sibling-not-parent waters. I felt for him, I felt for her. I loved their love story.

Okay, I said I wouldn't have spoken about the suspense plot - and I won't - except to say I wish it hadn't been included so I could have spent more time reading about the three different love stories. Way more interesting than some lame-o Catalan malcontent! Just saying.

5 out of 5 stars Romance for grown-ups.......2006-08-17

As a teenager in the 80s I read more than my fair share of Mills & Boon romances and the like. But after the nth novel I got bored with the trite, predictable plots and the flaccid sex. After nearly 20 years a friend convinced me to give romance another go and I'm happy to say at last I've found some romance for grown ups. Simona's writing is fresh and intelligent, her descriptions vivid, and the sex is anything but flaccid! I really enjoyed her French adventure and now I'm looking foward to catching up on her back catalogue of steamy Caribbean fare. More of this, please!

5 out of 5 stars For divine men and tintillating locations, read Simona Taylor!.......2006-08-17

I never fail to fall in love in Simona Taylor's leading men. I've read all of her books and in every one I fall in love and think there is no way she can come up with a more sexy, lovable man. But she always does!

Don't get me wrong, I love her women too. They're intelligent and interesting and stand on their own two feet, but are just spicy and feisty enough to really keep me reading.

May Summer Never End is another great read and has delicious descriptions of France as a big bonus. Don't miss this one!

          5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!!!.......2006-08-17

I have read all of Simona Taylor's books set in Trinidad and I always thought that she was good and very clear at describing exotic places. I have been to France a few times myself and I have to say she really got it down, it really feels like I am in France myself. You can almost smell the wine and taste the delicious cheese! And the relationship between Rissa and Evan was so sweet. He really was one of those sweet, nice-guy heroes, not one of those gruff types that are always putting the girl down. Wish I knew somebody like that! I really enjoyed this book! Simona, I cannot wait until your next book is out!

          5 out of 5 stars Simply Excellent!!.......2006-08-17

This novel made me want to visit France. The setting was so lovely, and the details were exquisite. Evan was a real hunk! I think what was different about this one was that the emotions that Simona Taylor dealt with were very real, not the fake romancey stuff you get sometimes. I loved it, and I'd recommend it to anybody. That other reviewer must be crazy. She totally missed the point.
