Book Description

Like a lot of young people in the 1970s, Mark Bittner took the path of the “dharma bum.” When the counterculture faded, Mark held on, seeking shelter in the nooks and crannies of San Francisco’s fabled bohemian neighborhood, North Beach. While living on the eastern slope of Telegraph Hill, he made a magical discovery: a flock of wild parrots. In this unforgettable story, Bittner recounts how he became fascinated by the birds and patiently developed friendships with them that would last more than six years. When a documentary filmmaker comes along to capture the phenomenon on film, the story takes a surprising turn, and Bittner’s life truly takes flight.

“A fascinating love story with wings.” —Boston Herald

“[A] charming memoir. For devoted birders everywhere.” —Reader’s Digest, Editor’s Choice

“[An] inspirational saga of one man finding his life’s meaning in the most serendipitous way.” —San Jose Mercury News

“Instructive, surprising, sweet.” —Gary Snyder, author of Turtle Island and Mountains and Rivers Without End

4 out of 5 stars Really good book.......2007-07-20

This book was recommended to me by someone whose taste in books I questioned. However, I must say this is a well-written, fascinating book. For animals lovers, in particular, you will truly enjoy this story.

5 out of 5 stars Parrots for everyone!.......2007-07-12

What a thrill to learn about Mark Bittner's love and care of the flock of (mostly) cherryheads. I'm not even a bird person, but I was just mesmerized a couple of years ago by a story I heard on NPR about a flock of parrots. I'm still not sure it was the San Francisco flock, but imagine my surprise when I saw Mark's book on my emailed Page-A-Day calendar.

Reading the story was like being there. I learned to like Mark in spite of my reservations in the beginning; couldn't wait to watch the film.

Only a week after finishing the book, I was reading the intro to another book and the author (Jim Palmer) introduced himself as a lover of quirky films that no one else knows about, like "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill." I considered it a "God-sign."

Read this book; you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Love on Wings.......2007-06-27

I throughly enjoyed this true story with a happy ending.
It was written with heart and soul.
And touched mine.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than the movie.......2007-01-03

I watched the movie prior to reading the book.

I enjoyed both but in particular the book.

Mark is a very good writer, especially when you consider that he has no formal training, that I am aware of.

This is a book that you can read again a few months later and be entertained all over again.

5 out of 5 stars On the Wings of Love..........2006-12-26

They say he may have been a modern bohemian Saint Francis living in San Francisco and befriending wild parrots. Or maybe he was simply a man returning (for some time) to the original state of humankind living in harmony with the creatures. Yes, this is the story of wild parrots and a semi-wild man and how they danced, sang, ate seeds, and lived together for six years. Perched high upon a hill overlooking the San Francisco bay, the ancient story of human befriending wild beasts unfolded. The kind of tale that fascinates us today just as it would have fascinated our ancestors in ancient times. Such stories will always fascinate us humans, whenever a gentle, loving heart opens itself to the magic and mystery of creation and engages in a dance of truth with life.

Mark Bittner writes: "In 1988, I took a job as the caretaker of a house on the east side of Telegraph Hill. Two years later I spotted four parrots in the gardens outside my home. Within three years the flock had grown to twenty-six, and I was in love. I spent the next six years making friends with them and learning their ways... I watched them for several years with tremendous curiosity. What were wild parrots doing in San Francisco? Then one day a few of them flew to my fire escape, and my whole life changed..."

In 1996 Mark began writing a book about his experiences with these colorful, fascinating birds. He came to know each parrot individually and personally. Each one has its unique personality, quirks, friendships, courtships, and life pathways. Mark wrote his observations in a journal of the lives of Mingus, Connor, Picasso, Sophie, Olive, Pushkin, Tupelo, and many other parrots whom he named, fed, observed, cared for, and befriended. He also photographed the birds, with stunning results. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill: A Love Story... With Wings is the highly acclaimed, charming, and best-selling result of Mark's six years with the birds.

Judy Irving, a filmmaker, began creating a documentary of Mark's work with the parrots in 1998. This resulted in her extraordinary documentary, also called The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. Although the title is the same as the book, the book and film focus on somewhat different aspects of the story. The film (available on DVD) is as much a study of Mark as it is of the parrots. While working on the film, Judy and Mark fell in love. They are now married and living in the gardens of Telegraph Hill. Mark is currently working on a book about his years of living on the street prior to his encounter with the parrots. Judy continues making her high quality films on the environment.

If you read the book or watch the film, you will find that Mark's bird-friends become your friends. James D. Gilardi, Ph.D., Director of the World Parrot Trust, writes: "By falling in with a flock of wild parrots, Bittner has learned more about a real parrot society than those of us studying wild or captive parrots could ever hope to learn." But of course, the book isn't just about parrots. As one reviewer of Mark's book wrote: "By the end of his tale, you will no longer see humans as the center of the universe, if you ever did." And by the time the screen credits are rolling at the end of the film, you will find yourself transformed by this beautifully touching and compelling story.

What I loved especially about both the film and the book is experiencing how Mark himself evolves and transforms through his relationship with the parrots and eventually through his relationship with Judy. He was a lost musician, a street person, a post-beatnik, searching for truth and "right living" as taught by Buddhism. He took odd jobs, tried this and that, but never quite found his path. Until he met the parrots. And then Judy. We sense that the story is far from over, and we yearn to know more of its unfolding... I wish that Judy and Mark would write, or document in film or photographs, more about their personal lives since the publication and dissemination of their book and film. The film opens you up to the delight of these two people, and one yearns to know more. Like the parrots, Judy and Mark have become our friends through the magic of the book and film.

To experience the magic yourself, view the film or DVD, read the book, view Mark's photos, and check out Mark's and Judy's websites. You'll be glad that you did! Beautiful story, beautiful people, beautiful birds.

Yes, if you are a lover of nature, both human and animal, I highly recommend this book and the film/DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly review.......2007-09-30

This series is awesome. They are so easy to read that you just flow. The only complaint is skipping in the years but you could not begin to read all of the years i guess. Very hard to put down once you start reading.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly Pack.......2007-07-25

I enjoyed reading these books for content and because they were very easy to read. They were written in a comprehensive language that allowed the reader to flow quickly through its content.

5 out of 5 stars Love Comes Softly Books 1-4.......2007-05-07

Good strong moral values are taught in this series. Easy reading gives you an idea of what it was like to live in the 1800's including travel, homelife, and strong work ethics. It takes you back to a slower pace of life. These books are worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing!!!.......2007-05-07

I bought all the movies and all the books for my Mom (83) and she absolutly loves them, she read all 8 books in about a week, said she "just couldnt put them down"!! Highly reccomended!!

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and soulful!.......2007-05-06

The Love Comes Sotfly books are wonderful! The characters jump out at you and come alive. They are much better than the Hallmark movies, and it was fun to read the differences and follow the lives of Clark, Marty and their children through the pages. Read the Prairie Legacy also by Janette Oak, they continue the story of Clark and Marty. What a wonderful set of books, I really reccommend them, especially if you like sequels and want to know the rest of the story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book alternative to myriad of lame Christian "dating books".......2005-07-11

I bought this book originally looking for a good well-reasoned alternative to the wasteland of pathetic Christian dating/marriage books on the market (e.g. I kissed dating goodbye). Specifically something that shared wisdom from past ages and was well reasoned and articulate.

This book met all of these expectations and more. My (now) wife and I re-read much of this book while we were dating and engaged, and it provided numerous hours for discussions about out thinking on marriage.

This book should be preferred reading for college age or older folks seriously interested in courtship/marriage, and want a larger frame of reference than the current culture. The articles are relavant, thought-provoking, and the best of western literature. It would also make an excellent source for a discussion group.

5 out of 5 stars Alternatives, Not Answers.......2004-11-10

If you don't like reading "classic" literature - that is, literature from another time, place and era, with a perspective utterly distinct (and even contrary) to our own - don't buy this book, as it's an anthology composed solely of excerpts from this literature.

If you do, however, I can't recommend this book highly enough. Not because it will tell you what to think about love, sex, and marriage (as if there is an "answer" to be found!), but because it will give you perspectives other than the one you have for considering your own life.

5 out of 5 stars Propaganda?.......2002-05-03

Natasha pretends to be a stone-hard woman who stands at the crossroads of social change while wondering in aristocratic fashion why so many stand in the way of Herstory; in reality she is an emotionally constipated wallflower and contents herself with feeling superior to those less insecure than herself. "Joe Mama" is a pseudo-intellectual poseur who wants us to wink at his sarcastic, bohemian persona while being silently impressed with his knowing sophistication, which he thinks is demonstrated by some obscure allusion to the writings of "evolutionary psychology" he is too stupid even to be able to parrot.

Ad Hominem attacks are as easy as they are irrelevant, aren't they?

I must have missed class the day they taught us that not only marriage but politeness as well had been dispensed with by the enlightened perspectives of "evolutionary psychology" and "modern sociological studies". Apparently Joe and Natasha were present however, which is why they can advise the rest of us that "Amy and Leon" have "done it again" in promoting "absurd moral values" and thereby "making [Joe] puke" and Natasha "Mmmmmmm" in smug disapproval. Nevertheless I doubt that 630 pages worth of commentary from Darwin (apparently he was not "evolutionary" enough for Joe), Plato (who recommended full equality for women in his "Republic"), Jane Austen (single, female, educated, independently wealthy, and famous--a real doormat, wouldn't you say), and other such fossils can be summed up by the assertion that "women should remain demure, submissive, and concern themselves above all with finding and keeping an attractive husband". Needless to say, such simplistic indoctrination, as opposed to reasoned argument, is far from Leon and Amy Kass as editors and contributors to this volume. For those who want to understand marriage as something more than a futile gesture or the vestigial opiate of slant-browed society, this is your book. To those for whom marriage is not a problematic issue, either through happy circumstance or simple indifference, good luck with being clueless.

5 out of 5 stars The wisdom of the ages...or throwbacks to an earlier time?.......2001-12-05

Some reviewers seem insistent that Amy and Leon Kass are stuck in a cultural and intellectual backwater, still insisting on ideas and values that are badly out of date.
Others say that Leon and Amy Kass have written the best answer to modern misunderstandings and mistakes concerning marriage and sexual relationships.

They are accused of trying to force their narrow, archaic views of the sexual nature of humanity.
They are also accused of depending strangely on ancient writings that have little 'scientific' value.

Leon and Amy Kass admit themselves that most of the writings they draw from are old--but the value of such writings is in finding what the people who wrote them have in common with modern times.
Basic facts of life--like the connection between sexuality and reproduction, the connection between monagomy and stable societies, and the connection between morality and healthy relationships--are the themes that hold this book together.
The book tends to question many modern assumptions--not for the purpose of turning back the clock, but for the purpose of finding a way to improve the future prospects in relationships, marriages, and society in general.

At no point do the editors preach to the reader. Instead, they encourage the reader to think--and to feel--and to explore the meaning of being a human being.

This book is written for college-level reading, although an intelligent high school student (one who has been trained to think for himself) can readily understand it.

1 out of 5 stars Wing to Wing, Oar to Oar: Another Sentence.......2001-08-03

Amy and Leon do quite a job with traditional texts. It is not an accident that the only evidence for such absurd moral values is found in ancient texts. Ancient texts provide excellent material for modern sociological studies. Fantastic, really. If you take your bearings from the Kasses' book, I would suggest to you that you check out First Things "the Journal of Religion and Public Life" and read about the many reasons women should remain demure, submissive and concern themselves above all with finding and keeping an attractive husband. Mmmmmm. God, like Homer works in mysterious ways.

I love Terri Blackstock's books. I find I can identify with her characters - I am always sad to finish a book. The best part is knowing that she writes her books in a series, so you can keep up with your favorite characters.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!.......2002-06-29

From one author to another I tip my hat to Terry Blackstock for this supurbly written ROMANCE. How refreshing to read about characters that could live next door instead of with 'the rich and famous.' "Broken Wings" rings with realism and the authentic action and dialogue will often reduce the reader to grab for the tissue box. Masterfully researched, this narrative and its study of fear and its effect on our lives will bring back similiar experiences for many of us. The author offers insight into recovery with out sounding preachy. Actually the best romance I have read in a long time. Plan to read more from the talented Terry Blackstock.

Book Description

Kristen Heitzmann's characters leap from the page with a balance of strength and fragility as they face anguish from the past. Jill and Morgan, once high school sweethearts, had loved and lost--each other and the baby whom Jill gave up at birth. Years later, Morgan is outwardly successful, but he is still haunted by the memory of the tiny child. And then Jill shows up again in his life with very disturbing news. With her trademark dramatic storytelling, Heitzmann takes readers on an unforgettable journey with two wounded souls as they struggle toward healing and restoration.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fav Heitzmann book so far!.......2007-04-23

I so enjoyed reading Rush of Wings and couldn't wait to read it's sequel. I found it helpful that I already knew the characters and had a bit of background. I enjoyed The Still of Night even more. I loved the characters created in Jill and Morgan. Their story came vividly alive through the writing. I couldn't help but feel with them. However, I too would have liked a little more developement of the happy ending. The whole book was devoted to their struggles and heartache and it would have been nice to have a little more resolution played out in the book. The Epilogue was sweet thought! Might we catch another glimpse of these characters in a future book? I would be excited about that!

5 out of 5 stars Great Reading.......2007-02-08

I just finished this book and was a great sequel to Rush of Wings. I liked Morgan's character in the first book (though brother Rick was better for Noelle's character than Morgan). He was just such a likable character even with his demons which he works through in "The Still of Night". I was a little disappointed that Morgan never really got to see or talk to his daughter except on the phone once but guess that made a different slant on the story. I also was a little disappointed that the romance doesn't get off the ground until almost the last page. I would have liked to have seen the last chapter explore that a little further although the epilogue covers the birth of their baby girl-okay what did they name her and also how did their marriage affect other secondary characters in the book-did she continue to teach? okay guess that leaves our imaginations or maybe another sequel is in order. This one picked up enough of Rick and Noelle's life (from A Rush of Wings)to know what was happening with them without dwelling on them too much. I enjoyed Rick's story and now Morgan's but almost the whole book is dwelling on Morgan's problems so would be nice to have a couple chapters of his life at peace. Some reviewers thought there was not enough spiritual emphasis in the 2 books especially the first one but for me it was a nice change from some of the Christian Novels I have read. The author puts enough in to know where our strength is and with God's indwelling the characters work through problems and can have peace. All in all a good book and my favorite so far of Kristen Heitzmann. You will definitely enjoy this book much more if you have read "A Rush of Wings" first.

5 out of 5 stars Makes you think!.......2006-01-30

This is a great book and very moving. It really makes you think and consider your choices. I love how it portrays the problems that men face over abortion, as well as women. I think that is very important and a book everyone should read!

5 out of 5 stars The Still of Night.......2005-09-30

It was a pleasure to read this book and the one preceding -
to see how the characters intertwined. She brought you into the story in such a way that you felt each emotion. It was good to read a story where the characters struggled with life issues as well as their relationship with God. I am delighted to have found Kristen Heitzmann. This is the first time I have read any of her books and I look forward to more!

5 out of 5 stars Another great book from Kristen Heitzmann!!!.......2005-09-01

I just finished this book and I will definetely be reading more from Kristen Heitzmann! The story is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. If you read "A Rush of Wings" also by Heitzmann, than you will already know Morgan Spencer, if you haven't you can still dive into this book. Jill Runyan and Morgan Spencer, highschool sweethearts, were torn apart by an accidental pregnancy and lies. They are reunited at their 15th highschool reunion.

Jill has just discovered that her daughter, Kelsey, who she gave up at birth, has leukemia. Kelsey needs a bone marrow transplant so her adoptive parents contact Jill as a donor. Struggling through the hearbreak and agony of not being a match for her daughter, Jill must now locate Morgan and tell him that he was lied to, that his child was not aborted, but she exists and needs his bone marrow in order to live.

Morgan was told when he was 18 that Jill, the love of his life, aborted their baby. He has lived with that belief for the past fifteen years. Today he is a very sucessful millionaire who has turned his back on God, and turns to alcohol way too often. Receiving the news that his daughter was not thrown away, but that she is in desperate need of his bone marrow, he hastens to under go surgery for the transplant.

The story explores love, forgiveness, prayer, and many other issues. You will no be disappointed after you read this book. It will make you want to go and read all of Kristen Heitzmann's books. Like I said earlier, you can read "A Rush of Wings" before you read this one is you want a better understanding of the characters. But you don't have to in order to enjoy this story.

4 out of 5 stars Belinda's story - her job, her life and her loves........2003-11-10

Belinda is featured in this seventh book of the series. Her brother, Dr. Luke has trained her well and she is working full time as his nurse. Her job takes a twist when a wealthy, elderly socialite suffers a stroke on the train and must be taken off and cared for in their small town. After the critical period, Belinda then becomes a private duty nurse in their small town.

Meanwhile, she has seen her 2 best friends and nieces Melissa and Amy Jo marry and move out west. Nursing has consumed so much of her time that she has hardly realized that life is passing and she does becomes aware of TWO possible suitors at the same, exact time - Jackson has returned as a Doctor and joins Luke's practice. Rand is an up and coming builder who has plans for a home for Belinda and himself. An offer to accompany the rich old woman to her home in Boston removes Belinda from the predicament of 2 suitors and no real love on her part.

Not only does she accompany, but she stays on at the Boston mansion of her employer. Never has she seen or even dreamed of such finery but she does learn to adjust. "Aunt Virgie" thinks of Belinda more as a daughter than a nurse which causes no small stir among the other household help. Matters are complicated even more when the old woman's grandson Peter comes to America for a visit. Will a friendship or romance develop between the two young people? Aunt Virginia hopes so, to keep her beloved Peter nearby.

Belinda travels abroad with her employer, and even though she is experiencing once in a lifetime events, she is empty and dissatisfied inside. Has she traded her peace of mind in a tiny prairie town for a life of luxury and discontentment?

I am excited to begin book eight in this series, Love Finds a Home.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL!.......2000-04-17

The continuing saga of Clark and Marty finds Belinda, their youngest child, traveling to faraway Boston as a private nurse. Her new life is much different from the one in the West, but Belinda adapts and enjoys her new life. Janette Oke has written this series so well that you feel that you are there and a part of the Davis family. This book is as rewarding as the six before it. Happy Reading!

5 out of 5 stars Colorado Wings, an Excellent Read!.......2003-01-11

This book was excellent! All four stories are linked together beautifully, and when you finish one, you'll want to start the other. The mystery element was a nice, added touch. If you enjoy Tracie Peterson's work, you should NOT miss this novella collection. It's a must-read!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2002-12-08

I liked this as much as "Sunrise". Good read, but like 'em a little hotter like my newest favorite "Anything, my Love" by Cynthia Simmons.

5 out of 5 stars Intrigue! Romance! Suspense! Heavy on Faith!!.......2001-02-06

Tracie Peterson takes the lives of some very interesting and prevocative people, separates them into four spell-binders, and then puts one cover on all! True to style, the author lets the reader learn all about the budding romances, the extreme disappointments, the rational and irractional fears and the final triumphs of faith!

Set in the Colorado Rockies, the love stories unfold slowly, entwined with tremendous complications of suspense, suspicion and subtle sub-stories.

The characters from story one continue over to story two and so on, just the lead changes. Tracie keeps the reader comfortable with glimpses from the previous stories as she unfolds the mysteries of the subsequent ones.

This 4-story book is not only romance, it is faith in God and faith and trust in other people at its best!

Kudos again Tracie!

5 out of 5 stars Peterson does it again!.......2001-02-01

These four novellas are Peterson's best. I could not put the book down! Go get this book - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful and comforting!.......2003-04-08

This is a wonderful book to send along with your condolences to anyone who has lost a loved one. The illustrations of songbirds together with the beautiful verses are truly lovely. This book will be a special keepsake for any bereaved family. I've already ordered extra copies to use as needed.

5 out of 5 stars Peaceful, Beautiful.......2000-06-18

Gift book that is a beautiful illustration of flowers and birds. Not just average illustrations but soft pastels and lifelike birds. Lovely script. Not obnoxiously and superficial scripture. I wanted to keep opening it and looking at the pages over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Beneath His Wings.......2000-03-09

A small beautifully illustrated book (Carolyn Shores Wright) of prayers of God's comfort and love. The illustrations are of different small birds and are worth the price of the book alone. Would make a great gift for anyone going through difficult times..

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous Breath of Fresh Air - Fantastic!.......2005-05-17

I read a lot of lesbian fiction. Many of the books I've read, even those written by seasoned authors, can't hold a candle to this one. Well-edited and eloquently written, Wings is a phenomenal first book and I can't wait for more.

Stacie Gillette is a newspaper reporter who thinks she's the cat's meow. She doesn't take her job seriously because she thinks it's beneath her. She sleeps with whomever she pleases, but won't let herself fall in love. She takes her best friend for granted, but doesn't realize it until it's too late. A series of unfortunate (yet avoidable) events lead to the loss of her job, her best friend, and her self-respect. Befriended by Cheryl Wright (an author who had denied Stacie an interview) and Estelle Vargas (editor of a local free paper), Stacie begins to understand she's not the center of the universe.

At 263 pages, this book is a real bargain. Even with its length, I finished it in one night (last night) and it stuck with me all day today. These characters have depth, they have personalities, and they deal with real-life issues. The author did a masterful job keeping this reader in suspense -- I couldn't tell until about 2/3 through who would finally capture Stacie's heart. I couldn't piece together the ending until I was almost there.

I can't say enough about the quality of this author's work. Three cheers for a tremendous new addition to the world of lesbian fiction!

5 out of 5 stars a must have for children of cancer survivors.......2007-09-15

I can't even tell you how many times I've read Butterfly Kisses and Wishes on Wings to my son! While I'm reading to him each night, he traces the "flight lines" of the butterflies with his fingers. He's only five and "gets it". His favorite part is where we share peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (The ONLY thing he'll eat for lunch!!!) I was 29 when I was diagnosed. He was only 1. I didn't have to explain anything to him as a one year old, but he understands the meaning of the pink ribbon now. This book is a MUST have for the children of survivors. What a great gift to give to your local elementary school or library.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful and important .......2007-06-30

Incredible book: excellent writing, wonderful illustrations and brilliant conveyance of a difficult message. I can't say enough good things about it. I hope your book reaches the thousands of doctors, hospitals, clinics, labs, schools, libraries and homes where it is really needed. You have produced something very special for this world.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful little book with a great big heart.......2007-01-15

What a wonderfully gentle and life-giving way to break very difficult news to the child who needs to learn of a loved one's cancer. This remarkable little book will indeed give that child wings. It will enable him or her to realize that life is filled with transformations that often begin at the most difficult of times. A wonderful gift!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for kids.......2007-01-11

The success of this book can best be defined by what my child said to me when I read it to her: "Mommy, how did the book know exactly what I was thinking?" What better endorsement for a book than that!! There's nothing else like it on the market. Congratulations to the author and the illustrator (who helped bring the words to life!).
