This true story about the love between a spiritual mentor and his pupil has soared to the bestseller list for many reasons. For starters: it reminds us of the affection and gratitude that many of us still feel for the significant mentors of our past. It also plays out a fantasy many of us have entertained: what would it be like to look those people up again, tell them how much they meant to us, maybe even resume the mentorship? Plus, we meet Morrie Schwartz--a one of a kind professor, whom the author describes as looking like a cross between a biblical prophet and Christmas elf. And finally we are privy to intimate moments of Morrie's final days as he lies dying from a terminal illness. Even on his deathbed, this twinkling-eyed mensch manages to teach us all about living robustly and fully. Kudos to author and acclaimed sports columnist Mitch Albom for telling this universally touching story with such grace and humility. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague.  Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it.

For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago.

Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder.  Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger?

Mitch Albom had that second chance.  He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life.  Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college.  Their rekindled relationship turned into one final "class": lessons in how to live.

Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.

5 out of 5 stars Tuesdays With Morrie.......2007-10-10

This was an excellent book that I enjoyed reading. It really makes you think about life and everything you've ever done. It teaches you to love without consequence and to be who you've always wanted to be. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.

5 out of 5 stars A great read.......2007-09-24

This book was quick to read and has a powerful message. Should be on everyone's 'must read' list!

5 out of 5 stars A story to open your heart.......2007-09-11

This is easily one of the most touching books I've read. Morrie's thoughts are those that I think all should read. The book is concise and is not overpowering in it's enlightenment. If you buy one book this year - buy this one. It will cause you to smile and laugh and cry and might just change your world.

5 out of 5 stars The Hobo Philosopher.......2007-09-10

Obviously this book doesn't need another review, but, for what it is worth, I liked it. It is a nice sentimental story, with some good advise and some believable people. Morrie was obviously a likable old man. I don't really agree with his philosophy entirely but my turn on that ride hasn't arrived yet. Maybe I'll change my tune when I get there. You really can't miss with this one.

1 out of 5 stars Too superficial ..........2007-09-09

Not impressed!! The lessons taught here are not something new but they are so superficially presented.

The roots of alcoholism in the life of a brilliant daughter of an upper-class family are explored in this stylistic, literary memoir of drinking by a Massachusetts journalist. Caroline Knapp describes how the distorted world of her well-to-do parents pushed her toward anexoria and then alcoholism. Fittingly, it was literature that saved her: She found inspiration in Pete Hamill's A Drinking Life and sobered up. Her tale is spiced with the characters she's known along the way.

Book Description

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor," a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

5 out of 5 stars Inside Information.......2007-10-05

This book is so well written, and is so honest and informative, it is perhaps the most compelling (and useful) story about addiction I've ever read. Caroline Knapp, an Ivy-League educated columnist and editor, shares the story of her slide into alcoholism and her road to recovery with brutal honesty. Her down-to-earth, conversational tone pulls you in, and paints a very credible picture of someone who goes beyond the singular, self-serving notion of merely writing a memoir. Recovery has brought out the best in her, and her writing is filled with gratitude and a deep sense of caring for the health of all those around her with or without addiction issues.

The love story metaphor plays all the way through and works well. I particularly liked the way she continues the analogy through her recovery and labels her relationship with alcohol "a divorce." She not only divorced alcohol, for the first year she "took out a restraining order," and avoided "alcohol the way you'd avoid running into an ex-lover at a restaurant."

Some of us have a difficult time understanding the disease of alcoholism and, more to the point, what goes on in the mind of an alcoholic or addict that keeps him/her on this self-destructive path. Knapp lays it bare. She comes across as someone you would want to know.

I recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the nature of both the active alcoholic and the recovering alcoholic. These pages are like a 280+ AA meeting, offering insight, understanding--even comfort--and most importantly, honesty.

Well done.

From the author of "A Line Between Friends," McKenna Publishing Group.

5 out of 5 stars Absorbing, raw, realistic, view........2007-08-30

I have read and re-read this book many times. This was the first (and still the best) non fiction book I have read about a first hand account on alcoholism. I really cared about the author, who struggles as a functioning alcoholic .Sadly Caroline Knapp died 5 years ago. A must read for anyone who is touched by the disease of alcoholism.

5 out of 5 stars Every woman and man should read this book.......2007-08-23

Caroline Knapp is a gift from the universe to us all. She has the best perspective on appetites and needs. She understands the human condition fully and I believe in my heart her book can help everyone. The world is at a tremendous loss for loosing her at such and early age. If you know anyone with a drinking problem or have one yourself you must read this book. This woman and her words are a life saver. Bless her for the good she did while she was on this earth.

5 out of 5 stars Drinking: A Love Story.......2007-05-30

I thought this book was a beautiful and honest portrayal of the progressiveness and destructiveness of the disease of alcoholism, especially as experienced by a woman. As a substance abuse counselor, it is not often that you come upon stories of alcoholism in women from upper-middle class, well-educated and highly respected families, or at least those that are nationally shared. I applaud Caroline Knapp for providing us with an inside view of alcoholism and the havoc it wreaks on the lives of many. It is a shame that she did not live to tell us her story beyond her first year of sobriety.

5 out of 5 stars Drinking: A love story.......2007-05-12

Having lived with an alcoholic husband for years and never quite understanding the "why", I found this book very interesting. It answered many of my questions. Although it is an easy "chatty" read, it has taken me forever to read as I find that I read a bit and then digest and apply it to my situation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to get inside an alcoholic's head.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Finally, a beginning...

The time had finally come. The time I had been waiting for through all these long months that I knew sooner or later had to occur. Now it was here.

She had surprised me so much by actually crying that for a moment I did nothing but look at her. Then I gathered her into my arms, hugging her tightly. She clutched onto my shirt so that I could feel the dull pain of her fingers digging into my skin. She cried and cried and cried. I held her and rocked the chair back and on its rear legs, feeling my arms and chest get damp from the tears and her hot breath and the smallness of the room.

This book is amazing. It will have you laughing, crying, and everything in between as you learn about a little girl who due to the insight, love, empathy, and dedication of her teacher overcame great odds. It will also introduce you to what a teacher of emotionally impaired students might have to deal.

I have used the book in a speed reading class several times and the students have loved it. I am now going to use it in another reading class to broaden the students' point of view and cultural awareness. Everyone I have shared the book with, has loved it and shared it with others. The read will keep you involved and make you want to read other books by Torey Hayen.

Teacher and literary genius Torey Hayden hits a high note with her captivating book, "One Child." I have been blessed with the opportunity to read this story and it truly is a masterpiece. The words set forth to paper in this story are more powerful than a Boeing jet and have the strength to move you on an emotional level.

This is the story of young special education teacher Torey Hayden and her quest for higher knowledge to the handicapped and disturbed. She is given the task of teaching a class deemed impossible that is full of misfit kids with bizarre backgrounds of abuse, poverty, depression, and mental handicaps. She fights against the odds to reach the kids on a deeper level, when a seven year old girl with a disturbing past and animalistic behavior is placed in her class to await transfer to the state mental hospital. Torey uses everything within her power to help this girl and break her from submission.

Torey Hayden has a style a writing that will not only give you mental pictures of the vast scenarios set forth in this story, but she will also give your mind a ride it won't expect. I'll be honest, when I first starting reading this book my expectations were very low, but once I got into it I couldn't set it down. Torey Hayden has great word choice and can describe any situation down to the detail and still keep the story going. Her fluent, in depth descriptions are beautifully written and kept me engaged through out the whole book.

This story, along with its powerful words, has a strong, meaningful message that everyone should read. This story speaks of tolerance for those who are different because they are a direct result of their environment and it is not their fault they act the way they do. It also tells that you should accept peoples little quarks and disabilities because it is what they want to be like and it is better to be different then to blend into a world that does not accept them anyways.

5 out of 5 stars a book i have never forgotten.......2007-05-29

I read this book many years ago while i was in high school. i have re-read it several times. I HATE RE-READING NORMALLY! but every couple of years i take it out, and it still makes my cry, tears of happiness and sorrow. it is by far a classic in my collection of books. i recommend this book all the time to adults and students, everyone of them has thanked me!

4 out of 5 stars One Child (Layne Pearson).......2007-05-25

When I started reading this book I didn't think I was something that I would like, but I decided to keep reading and I turned out a great book. First six years old Shelia never spoke, never cried, when she looked at you her eyes were filled with hate. She was abandon on the highway by her mother, and was abused by her alcoholic father. Next she was placed in a class for the mentally and hopelessly retarded. This was because she committed an atrocious act of violence on a boy 1 year younger than her. Finally Torey her teacher fought to get through to Shelia. She spent many months trying to find the way through those hate filled eyes. Truly this is a great book, I really recommend this book, and if you want to know more read "One Child".

5 out of 5 stars Thank you Torey! .......2007-04-10

As a victim of extreme child abuse and experiences not dissimilar to that experienced by Sheila, and as an adult who has become consistently drawn to helping children who struggle with various aspects that block their progress, I am compelled to say that I found both One Child and The Tiger's child to be an incredible journey and an amazingly cathartic read. I am grateful that I was privileged enough to share it with these two amazing people.

On the one hand, I could relate to Sheila in so many ways - and reading about her helped me to understand my own strength and courage, and through her, to respect what I have managed to achieve in my life, against the odds.

I also related strongly to Torey, who shows what it means when an adult truly tries to understand the child behind the behaviour. She shows us what it means to look below the surface, what it means to truly care enough to have an impact. She shows us what it means to choose to love and take a chance.

The risk of doing harm in this context pales in comparison to the chance of adding some sense of self worth to the psyche of a very damaged child. I cannot praise Torey enough for what she managed to do for Sheila. The value of what was offered far outweighs any cost.

Torey admits openly in The Tiger's Child that she discovered that her own disappearance from Sheila's life caused harm. She is very honest about this. She also expresses her own angst and regret at this fact. Sheila was definitely hurt by Torey's disappearance. However, she also benefited from the encounter in ways that nobody can understand unless they have been there and experienced it.

In my childhood, there was a psychologist/social worker who spent a short time sharing space with me when I was about six years old. I have always missed her since we parted ways and would still love to see her again - but the fact that she was there, even for five minutes, matters enormously to me, because she made me realise I had value, that I was important enough that I deserved help. I have never been angry at her for moving on in her life, and in fact never thought about it from the position of feeling abandoned until I read Tiger's Child.

In the end, it is a matter of choice of perspective - I chose to value the good that was offered to me and to hang onto that and find strength in the memory of it. I imagine many other children would make that same choice.

What Torey added to Sheila's sense of identity by being there for those five months when she was so small, was an idea that she had worth. She also showed Sheila that her life had possibility, that she could have a future - that it was okay to hope for something better. Without this hope, Sheila may never have survived for so long.

At a crucial time in her development, Torey gifted Sheila with an alternative view of the world, and let her know that she wasn't ever completely alone. It seems distinctly plausible that by doing this, she averted disaster and probably prevented Sheila from heading down a path of potential sociopathy.

The focus on IQ was, quite simply, on two levels - firstly, that Torey was so surprised to discover that this firey little ball of dirt and fists had such potential, and secondly, that it was an attribute that could be used in "the system" in order to achieve a new chance at a future for Sheila. In the era described, IQ carried great weight, and I know if I was trying to save a child from what I considered to be a harmful future setting, I would use whatever positive attributes that exist within that child as much as possible. The beauty of IQ in that context is that it is something which can be measured and demonstrated - and it works in a court of law.

Torey made no judgement of any of her other students who had lower IQs, clearly loved them all and was passionate about assisting each and every one of the to a better quality of life. It just happens that this particular child had a huge impact on her teacher, and in the end, that is what this book (and Tiger's Child) is about - the teacher's admiration for the courage, strength, endurance and tenacity of a young individual who is struggling against massive life obstructions.

I urge everyone to remain open to the idea that Torey's efforts, while possibly not perfect, were by far better than the consequences of no efforts being made at all.

Book Description

The groundbreaking book that breaks the silence of the male code.

Why do men fall out of love? It’s rarely a simple issue of attraction, sex, or money trouble. In this provocative no-holds-barred guide, Michael French brings unparalleled insight into the male psyche and reveals why so many men feel trapped, unhappy, or unfulfilled, and what women can do about it.

Based on interviews with men from all ages and walks of life this grippingly honest book illustrates why, when it comes to relationships, so many men feel “outgunned and outmatched” by women. Discover:

• The 4 relationship busters that lead couples to flounder and sink–the loss of intimacy / the quest for validation / the perfection impulse / the fading of attraction–and strategies for dealing with them head-on
• Six key reasons why men fall out of love–from issues of identity, power, and fear to stereotypes about who they really are and what they want
• The truth about men and (mis)communication–and ways for them to open up
• Three questions a woman needs to ask a man before she becomes emotionally involved
• The Relationship Audit–how couples can figure out what is driving them apart and find ways to mend their relationship

By finally bringing men’s true feelings to the surface, Michael French offers a dramatic new approach to understanding men and their hidden emotions. This guide illuminates the deeper reasons why men fall out of love and, more important, shows how relationships can be healed.

“An impressive, insightful, and completely accessible view deep into the heart’s of men and their struggle with love.”
–Joel D. Block, Ph.D., author of Naked Intimacy

“Read this brilliant book and untie the knot of life– why does love fade?”
–Susan Braudy, former editor of Ms. Magazine

5 out of 5 stars Realistic, insightful and fresh analysis.......2007-05-24

This book combines very helpful, prescriptive advice for any couple about keeping relationships alive and fresh, with lots of insights not found in other self-help books about why men lose the handle on relationships and give up so easily. The problem for men is sometimes deep and systemic and pop culture fixes and cliches are a waste. As a woman I found this fresh analysis void of cliches and instead it hits on important truths. Anyone in relationship denial won't respond well to this book, but those with a curious and rational heart will.

A good sized book? = Yep.
A good sized book filled with endless freudian analysis? = Yep. And Yep.
Stories that could circumcise men. Stories that shatter men into monuments of victims. = Sadly, yep.

In the end, I'll take the pillow over walking the plank. I got the book for free, not a blessing (it turns out).

Want to munch time? Buy it!
Enjoy Freudian, Victim filled, long and overdrawn soap opera cliffhangers? Buy it.
But if that self-help boat seems a bit rotten, search Amazon or elsewhere for something worth the time and money.

Back to my pillow.

Disclaimer: I proudly give this book a star, the poor chap who wrote it deserves some sort of confidence booster...if ever anti-depressants were designed for a market. It would be for this writer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent insights for keeping love alive.......2007-05-03

What a valuable tool this book is to men and women who discover that the elements that initially attracted them to each other--that caused them to fall in love--are insufficient to sustain their relationship over the long term. The author has managed to get ten sensitive and intelligent men to candidly and fully reveal their innermost selves. We come to understand how the influence of their parents--particularly their mothers--in early childhood, create the needs and desires that lead them to fall in love with the person they have chosen. They are not aware of this at the time, but come to understand it years later as they seek to learn why these needs are no longer satisfied by that person. The analysis after each man's story shows how the understanding of the dynamics of need and attraction presents both the man and his love with the possibility of transforming themselves to adapt to the unfulfilled needs, thus falling back in love and sustaining their relationship. This book offers hope and a path to those struggling to keep their love alive.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for Guys.......2007-05-02

As a middle aged man going through what we middle aged men go through, I found this book very informative, helpful, and insightful. In just about each relationship Mr. French covers there are issues these men faced which resonate with my own struggles in relationship. Since men rarely share there true feelings in this area, this book help me to understand that others have the same struggles I do and reveals insights into directions for solutions. I found the author's commentary helpful as well.

Great book- all men should read it!! CC

5 out of 5 stars Simply loved it .......2007-04-25

As a man,I found this book to be extremely insightful... particularly regarding childhood issues and how they affect your behavior in an adult relationship. The complexity of relationships is not something men deal with easily, but this book gives you access points, not just to your own emotions but your partner's also, and provides a number of fixes. After looking at my relationship with my parents, I now have a new perspective into who I am, and why I am that way.

    Book Description

A Case of Need is Michael Crichton's award-winning debut novel, written shortly after he completed his medical internship. Set against the ever-building pressure and pace of a large Boston medical center, the tensions flare-and explode-when a surgical operation tragically ends in death, raising countless questions. Was it accidental malpractice? A violation of the Hippocratic oath? Or cold-blooded murder?

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Top of his game!.......2007-07-07

Crichton's first book is fantastic - intriguing throughout. If you're a Crichton, murder mystery or even just a medical fiction fan, this is for you. I have no training in medicine, yet he makes it all very understandable! It's a "must read!"

4 out of 5 stars Well Done Early Novel by Crichton.......2007-06-09

Michael Crichton was only 26 years old when he wrote A CASE OF NEED in 1968. This book, although not perfect, is a very well written medical thriller that holds up pretty well nearly forty years later.

A CASE OF NEED deals with the subject of abortion, and an abortion doctor who has been wrongly framed for a botched operation. It probably won't have much appeal for the anti-abortion crowd, although it's interesting to read a book that deals with the subject before the Roe v. Wade court decision took effect.

Like all of Crichton's books, this novel has a lot of interesting information about science. In particular, Crichton does a good job of explaining how doctors do their jobs, and what life was like for young doctors in the late 1960s. If you're interested in the medical profession, this book has a lot of fascinating material.

The major weakness of this A CASE OF NEED is the large number of characters, and the fact that several of them are not fully fleshed out. I occasionally had to flip back the pages to remind myself who was who. I also felt the hero of this book was essentially uninteresting -- Crichton has never been very good at creating strong central characters in his novels.

All in all, though, A CASE OF NEED is a solid medical thriller. It's one of Circhton's better novels.

    2 out of 5 stars Didn't like it much.......2007-01-06

In my opinion, this book is Michael Crichton's most boring novel I've ever read. I had trouble understanding this book. But judging from my memories, I think this would've been a better book if I understood it better, but who knows? I just didn't like it that much the time I read it plus the trouble-understanding, so it's 2 stars for me. Some memories also kick back to me that I almost fell asleep reading it or yawned. (But these are just my views.)

    3 out of 5 stars Early-period Crichton.......2006-12-16

Crichton's development as a writer is clearly evident to me in his books, though I've not read them all. "A Case of Need" is unique among the Crichton books that I have read - it's more of a medically-themed detective story than the technological thrillers that Crichton is best known for. His writing style is more antiquated: more formal and less intended to quickly hook the reader and reel him/her in. It is also peculiar in that it is written in the first person, severely limiting the reader's perspective. The plot is slow, consisting of mostly conversational interviews, lacking the slasher dinosaur scenes of "Jurassic Park" or even the heart-stopping germ scenes in its closer sibling "The Andromeda Strain".

Overall, it's a good mystery story, but it lacks most of the features that have drawn me back to Crichton novels again and again. I like Michael Crichton because he can write an intriguing, fast-paced, easy-to-read novel while still incorporating themes - fun novels that make you think. "A Case of Need" is not as fun, and its intentions seem clouded and confused. It's still a worthwhile read, but Crichton has since written better.

    4 out of 5 stars I loved it!.......2006-12-05

I couldn't put it down and finished it in one day. Highly recommended as a fun and suspenseful read.

    Book Description

Looking for Information explores human information seeking and use. It provides examples of methods, models and theories used in information behavior research, and reviews more than four decades of research on the topic. The book should prove useful for scholars in related fields, but also for students at the graduate and advanced undergraduate levels. It is intended for use not only in information studies and communication, but also in the disciplines of education, management, business, medicine, nursing, public health, and social work.

This second editon of Looking for Information reflects a vastly increased literature on the topic of information behavior. Among the additions are over 400 new citations to relevant works, most of which appeared between March, 2002, and January, 2006. Many new studies are described in the section reviewing research findings (Chapters Eleven and Twelve), Chapter Nines examples of methods, and a widely expanded discussion of theories applied in information behavior research (Chapter Seven).

*Reviews over 1,100 works -- 60% more than the first edition
*Adds many new studies conducted from 2002 to 2006
*Expanded coverage of models and theories of information behavior
*Many new examples of occupations and roles -- the contexts of information seeking

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars I'd prefer a 3 1/2 for this book.......2006-04-04

As a graduate student in Library and Information Studies, I was assigned this book in one of my courses. As textbooks in this field go, Case's book is more readable than most. As mentioned by an earlier reviewer, it is an in-depth literature review, and since it is for one of the required courses which had to be taken early on, it will be a useful reference in future classes. In fact, it is a book that I will retain simply as a source of information on possible research material.

The book is well organized and frankly, is one of the nicest as far as materials and construction. The questions at the back of the book, supposedly relating to each chapter, were confusing in that there seemed to be no relationship in many instances.

The one serious complaint that I can make is the tremendous need for editing and proofreading in this edition. The book is replete with incorrect grammar, misspellings, missing words, extra words, etc. Hopefully, these will be corrected in the new edition.

4 out of 5 stars I have to disagree with a Reader from England..........2003-11-06

I'm currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Information Science and, while this book isn't the sum total of all LIS knowledge, I've found it invaluable as a reference on Information Seeking. Few other places will you find this level of literature review laid out in such a compact way. I use it nearly every day in my studies and I'm grateful that Don Case wrote it. It's a roadmap and guidebook for my studies.

2 out of 5 stars The case of a failed survey mission...........2003-01-17

I was excited by the possibility of a suitable overview of information seeking, I obtained the book a.s.a.p. I was willing to forgive the high price in favour of a good text.

It was downhill from there: Unfortunately the text of Donald Case's book fails to impress on any level.

For the scope of the subject matter the book is surprising in the selection of items included and omitted. With some areas appearing rather bald in references and general coverage.

By giving focus to a selection of models that embrace need and sources, and in different aspects e.g. information overload, the portrait is skewed.

To use this book in teaching it would require much more support from supplementary texts and journal articles to correct the omissions.

I cannot recommend this text to students nor to academics seeking a suitable class text.

Once you begin reading As Nature Made Him, a mesmerizing story of a medical tragedy and its traumatic results, you absolutely won't want to put it down. Following a botched circumcision, a family is convinced to raise their infant son, Bruce, as a girl. They rename the child Brenda and spend the next 14 years trying to transform him into a her. Brenda's childhood reads as one filled with anxiety and loneliness, and her fear and confusion are present on nearly every page concerning her early childhood. Much of her pain is caused by Dr. Money, who is presented as a villainous medical man attempting to coerce an unwilling child to submit to numerous unpleasant treatments.

Reading over interviews and reports of decisions made by this doctor, it's difficult to contain anger at the widespread results of his insistence that natural-born gender can be altered with little more than willpower and hormone treatments. The attempts of his parents, twin brother, and extended family to assist Brenda to be happily female are touching--the sense is overwhelmingly of a family wanting to do "right" while being terribly mislead as to what "right" is for her. As Brenda makes the decision to live life as a male (at age 14), she takes the name David and begins the process of reversing the effects of estrogen treatments. David's ultimately successful life--a solid marriage, honest and close family relationships, and his bravery in making his childhood public--bring an uplifting end to his story. Equally fascinating is the latest segment of the longtime nature/nurture controversy, and the interviews of various psychological researchers and practitioners form a larger framework around David's struggle to live as the gender he was meant to be. --Jill Lightner

    Book Description

In  1967, after a twin baby boy suffered a botched circumcision, his family agreed to a radical treatment that would alter his gender.  The case would become one of the most famous in modern medicine -- and a total failure.  As Nature Made Him tells the extraordinary story of David Reimer, who, when finally informed of his medical history, made the decision to live as a male.  A macabre tale of medical arrogance, it is first and foremost a human drama of one man's -- and one family's -- amazing survival in the face of terrible odds.

3 out of 5 stars Medical Fraud vs Journalistic Fraud - take your pick.......2007-09-24

Anyone who looked through a serious book on sex and gender in the 1970s was bound to come across the landmark John/Joan case. It seemed to indicate that children's sense of their sex (i.e., whether they were boys or girls) was soft and malleable. Counterintuitive and Marxian as that sounds now, it was presented as enlightened, forward-looking thinking.

By the time John Colapinto published his expose of the John/Joan case in Rolling Stone in 1997, the jig was already up. Intersex advocates were loudly complaining that they had been mutiliated and tinkered with. The weight of evidence now suggested that for most people, one's mental sex was as fixed at birth as one's physical form.

This book expanded on the original article by naming the actual principals in the tale and describing John/Joan's long and grueling experience of being a Johns Hopkins guinea pig: the transcontinental trips to the doctor once or twice a year, the psychological bullying, the constant reminder that you are some sort of freak.

The article and the book are both heavily biased against John Money, the eminent New Zealander who supervised the experiment, and suspiciously eager to believe any scurrilous tales that his colleagues might offer (e.g., that Money had sexual relations with some of his students; the implication is that this sort of behavior is transgressive to an extreme, seldom encountered among academics and sex researchers!). To which I say--well, whether John Money was good or evil, he accomplished his main objective, which was to push back the frontiers of ignorance about sexual identity. We can now feel fairly confident in saying that you cannot just change someone's sex, willy-nilly, and force the mind to go along. More pertinently, if a child who appears to be female insists that she/he is really a boy, that child should not be regarded as delusional.

Overall, the basic narrative of the Reimer family is not credible, and this is the basic weakness of the book. After all those trips to Baltimore, and the crushing awareness that "she" was some sort of sexual freak, Brenda/David Reimer certainly had some inkling of the truth long before she was 13. At the very least, Brenda and her twin brother must have had many intimate chats while they were growing up; surely there were some wild but accurate guesses in there. And it is inconceivable that the Reimer parents would never have alluded to Brenda's "accident." They probably discussed openly it all the time when the twins were two or three, the same way grown-ups often undress in front of their toddlers, regarding them as no more impressionable or sentient than the kitty-cat.

The death of both twins a few years ago (one by overdose, the other by suicide) suggests that the family dynamics were far more messed up than we knew. I got the idea (from the book) that the twins were seriously lacking in ambition, social skills, and other incentives to get on in life. This is disturbing for me to contemplate, since it makes me wonder if the John/Joan experiment might have had a different outcome in a happier, less dysfunctional family. Would Brenda have adapted better, perhaps as a tomboy? Would she have decided to remain a girl if she'd been happier socially, with more friends and an intellectually stimulating envrionment? Perhaps not. But the sad dynamics of the Reimer family are an annoying variable, making me sometimes wonder whether the John/Joan case teaches us anything useful.

5 out of 5 stars A horrible but important story.......2007-09-22

Horrifying story of a little baby boy, who suffered, firstly, during a circumcision accident and then every day of his life as he is forced to live as a girl.
The description of his treatment and the treatment of his brother at the hands of the supervising doctor is beyond horrific. To show small children pornography and to make them simular sex with each other just curdled my mind. And the total lack of listening to the patient is truely unbelievable that it was permitted for so long.
The book is well written and a realy page turner. Your heart goes out to the boy and his family and you can't help but looking at the photos in the middle. Don't be afraid that the book may be too dry, it is written with the lay person in mind. Sympathetic to David and the choices his parents made in 1967.
A must read and extremely thought provoking.

    2 out of 5 stars Boooring.......2007-09-12

    1 out of 5 stars Essentialist trash.......2007-08-07

Leave it to Rolling Stone magazine to drop one of the great Right Wing bombs of the 90's. With one unfortunate case history, the entire environment / behavorological project of the 70's gets wiped. "See, biology IS destiny" crowed the Silent Majority. Not for nothing did Abbie Hoffman call Jan Wenner the "Benedict Arnold of the Sixties."

Anyway, nature seemingly triumphed over nurture in the profound year of 2001 when this reductionist piece of garbage topped the best seller charts. Johns Hopkins stopped treating TSs and many other clinics, such as Stanford University, followed suit. Reaction has set in; next stop, Thailand, girls.

As Colapinto points out throughout his book, Brenda would have rather committed suicide than go on against the "natural" fiber of his existence. Yet - after the happy ending, reverse SRS, and the royalty checks, the newly emerged David Reimer killed himself anyway. BLAM. Just a few years after his twin brother did the same (with dope).

Seems like the story here is actually depression, not gender. And what does Colapinto have to say about that embarrassing piece of business? "It was what David was inclined to brood about that killed him. David's blighted childhood was never far from his mind." How frickin' convenient. Ideologically speaking, Colapinto's got the subtlety of Ayn Rand.

5 out of 5 stars Nature Versus Nurture.......2007-05-10

The nature versus nurture debate is back again in this heartbreaking true story. It begins with a botched circumcision and continues with the issues he faced in life.
