Debt-ridden Avery Fleming is determined to find a wealthy husband for his beautiful daughter, Erienne, so he can pay off his mountain of debts. Erienne, however, has refused every one of the old men her father has picked for her consideration. When she meets dashing American merchant Christopher Seton, she cannot deny her attraction to him, despite the fact that he wounded her brother, Farrell, in a duel, crippling him for life. However, when Seton asks for Erienne's hand in marriage, both she and her father refuse him. Instead, Erienne's father auctions her off to the highest bidder--the mysterious Lord Saxton, a man whose horrifying scars are hidden by a mask and cloak. Erienne comes to know her husband as a kind and gentle man, but when Christopher Seton returns to town, she cannot fight her attraction to him. She finds herself torn between her duty to the man she has wed and the call of her heart.

Book Description

The fairest flower in Mawbry is Erienne Fleming, the enchanting, raven-haired daughter of the village mayor. Charming, spirited and exquisitely lovely, she is beset on all sides by suitors, any one of whom would pay a king's fortune for a place in her heart. But Erienne has eyes for only one: the dashing and witty young Yankee, Christopher Seton.

But marriage for love is not to be, for her irresponsible and unscrupulous father, crippled by gambling debts, is intent on auctioning off his beautiful daughter to the highest bidder. And in the end, Erienne is devastated to find it is the strange and secretive Lord Saxton who has purchased her—a mysterious, tragic figure who wears a mask and a cloak at all times to hide disfiguring scars gained in a terrible fire some years back.

But in the passing days, Saxton's true nature is revealed to her. A gentle and adoring soul, he treats his new bride with warmth and abiding tenderness, yet appears to her only by daylight. She, in turn, vows to be a good and loyal wife to him. And then Christopher Seton reenters Erienne's world Conflicted by emotions she cannot suppress, Erienne valiantly attempts to remain honorable to her elusive, enigmatic husband but feels herself irresistibly drawn to Seton's passion, his fire, and his secrets. Entangled in intrigues she doesn't yet understand, Erienne Fleming will soon have to make a devastating choice: between love and honor . . . between her duty and her heart.

5 out of 5 stars A Rose of a novel.......2007-08-18

I found the book to be highly entertaining. The author, Kathleen Woodiwiss, did an amazing job of being able to capture a character and putting them through multiple different settings. It still amazes me that the characters go from being on a boat in New Orleans with the focus being on gambling, to the gaming hells of San Francisco, to the heroine being captured in a house in the remote part of the country, and finally to a dareing train ride and a tale of mystery and intrigue. The author's penmenship and word usage are fantastically incorporated and the characters are extremely likable. I say that overall, this novel was very well written and captured the spirit and essence of the time.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorites!.......2007-06-18

I remember my mother reading this book when it was first published back in the 80s but I didn't read it until my freshman year in college. I borrowed it from a friend during exams and found myself absorbed in the book rather than my studies!

I love the story and the characters and keep this book on a shelf with very few other favorite books of mine. I read several books a week and pass them on when I'm through. For me to keep a book to re-read is truly rare.

While my taste for romance novels has evolved since college (from LaVryle Spencer and Johanna Lindsey to Nora Roberts, Jennifer Cruisie & Sophie Kinsella) I go back to some old standards like Woodiwiss and Rosemary Rogers...

Yesterday I decided to give A Rose In Winter another read (it's been probably 5-7 years since I last read it) and found myself as intrigued and involved as the first time I read it! Frankly, I was expecting more fluff but was pleasantly surprised to become wrapped up in the characters and story. Some of the historical romances I've read recently are so tedious I'm tempted not to finish, but this book is one I can't put down! The only problem with reading it so fast is I don't want it to end! This book is like an addiction and I can't stop thinking of Erienne, Christopher & Saxon. Do yourself a favor and read this book!

5 out of 5 stars 'love it!!!.......2007-05-10

i buy historical romance novels by impulse and make them sit in my bookshelf for a long time...especially books by this author. at first glance, her novels just seem so wordy and complicated. but then one day, i finally decided to give it a chance and read one of her books in my possession, i had 4 novels namely, "the wolf and the dove", "rose in the winter", "the flame and the flower", and "ashes in the wind". i chose this book to be the first one to read. and i realized that the author's wordiness actually helps the reader, to make you feel like you're transported to that era. the plot is excellent. i like the twist of events...i can hardly put it down!!! the storyline is just like "beauty and the beast". it is magical, romantic...and i really like the hero. kathleen e. woddiwiss did an excellent job with this...one of the best books i've read...a collectible!!!

5 out of 5 stars Very Romantic and heartwarming story from a great author.......2006-12-16

Kathleen Woodiwiss has always been one of my favorite authors. My very first romance novels were "The Flame and the Flower", "Shanna", and "Ashes in the Wind". All three were wonderful and I never thought that she could keep outdoing herself. She has done just that with "A Rose in Winter". I actually had purchased the book because it was a KEW book and it sat on my shelf for several months before I got around to reading it. Don't make the same mistake! Buy it, open it, and you won't be able to put it down.
I loved the hero and heroine in the book. Erienne is strong without being the typical romance heroine who is far too liberated for her time period. She is strong, sweet, and honorable. I loved the way that she stuck by her "husband" and grew to love him despite his appearance or lack thereof.
I won't give too much of the story away by going into great detail about the hero in this book. Let's just say that it's too bad they don't make them like that anymore.
This book is a wonderful read and will remain on my keeper shelf. It's a true classic from the queen of the romance genre.

5 out of 5 stars Unforgettable...a great book.......2006-09-18

I have to say Kathleen Woodiwiss' books are all unforgettable, even the ones I haven't given 5 stars, but "Rose" had me hooked from the beginning and I simply couldn't put it down. It will leave you breathless at times; full of suspense and romance and adventure...like all KEW's books, but this one is just so special. If she didn't do it with "Flame", "Ashes" and "Shanna", Miss Woodiwiss has me hooked and I am going to read all her books cover to cover. I recommend this to anyone who wants to be swept away and enter a whole other world. That carriage ride after the Leicesters' Ball with the snowflakes falling is like something out of a fairy tale, just beautiful!

Winter Rose begins as the seemingly simple story of Rois and Laurel Melior and their understandable fascination with young Corbet Lynn, returned to rebuild his abandoned ancestral home, Lynn Hall. Laurel is drawn to Corbet's beauty, Rois to the mystery of his past. But the past holds more than one mystery, and as Rois fights her way into the wood around Lynn Hall, seeking answers for herself, Laurel, and Corbet, she risks losing everything, for all of them, forever.

Traces of Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market, of Tam Lin, and of a dozen other legends and tales color Rois's story. Patricia McKillip's consummate mastery of language means that every word counts in a complex, sweetly painful story of human love and timeless, indifferent power.

Book Description

When Corbet Lynn returns home to rebuild his family's estate, his grandfather's curse is rekindled-and lures a free spirited woman from the woods that border Lynn Hall.

"Weaves a dense web of desire and longing, human love and inhuman need." (Publishers Weekly)

"The prose is impeccable, the story memorable, and the characters admirable." (Science Fiction Chronicle)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A vague, inarticulate tale.......2007-04-22

Sometimes McKillip writes the way I would talk if I had marbles in my mouth. This is one of those times.

4 out of 5 stars Dark and Dreamlike.......2006-12-25

I devoured "Winter Rose" in one sitting, held rapt by its spell. It is a fascinating read, because of the way McKillip uses gorgeous language to depict the dark and magical atmosphere of a forest with a life of its own. I almost felt as if I was dreaming while I read this book. The story itself unfolds gradually, but the pacing never drags.
The only reason I am giving it four stars instead of five is that McKillip occasionally gets too weighed down by florid language and description. However, for most of the novel her style is perfectly suited to the mood and nature of the tale.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written--a classic of its type.......2006-08-01

That says it all. The language and imagery are exquisite. The story is original even though it is derivative. One of the best books I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy-Tale Rose.......2006-06-12

"Winter Rose" is a fairy tale in more than one sense of the word. It has the feel of every decent fairy tale--curses, siblings, mysterious strangers, and puzzles that must be unlocked. It contains elements I've seen before, and this isn't a bad thing; this is hardly some rehashed, barely warmed-over, half-hearted retelling. It's quite original and interesting, despite the fairy-tale familiarity.

It is also a fairy tale in that it tells a story of mortal dealings with the land of fairies. Not little people with wings, but the terrible, dangerous fey creatures who are, often as not, the downfall of the mortals who encounter them.

I loved the characters in this book. The book gave me a strong feel for the ones that showed up often. Rois, Laurel, Perrin, Rois's father, Corbet, some of the people from the village--I enjoyed every one of them, and felt as though I knew them by the end of the book. This did, however, cause the natural problem that always emerges when the characters are too interesting in a book--I hated to let go of them at the end!

Perhaps the only flaw in the characters is that the tale deals with things that happened two generations ago, involving the memories of many people. After a while I lost track of a few of the people referred to. It wasn't a strong enough effect to mar my enjoyment of the book, however; it was an incidental and momentary confusion.

"Winter Rose" went by in the span of a heartbeat for me; I started reading it mid-morning and was done with it before dinner. It pulled me in and enchanted me. I had trouble returning to reality, and simply couldn't start reading another book right away. My head was lost in the gorgeous world McKillip had evoked with her elegant words.

5 out of 5 stars Into another realm.......2006-06-08

The language in this book is so magical. It's one that you almost need to read in one sitting because of the flow. It pulls you in and entangles you like the rose bush thorns in the story entangle Rois. To me there were elements of such classic stories as those of Thomas Hardy and "Wuthering Heights". This book takes you to another world and is poetically written.

Book Description

A deeply enthralling, richly romantic novel of passion and adventure by a stunning new voice in historical romance. . .

At sixteen, Lady Solange had pledged her love to Damon Wolf, had dreamed they would be together forever. But when her ruthless father threatened Damon's life unless she agreed to marry another, Solange did the only thing she could: she scorned her true love and sent him away. . . never imagining the fate that awaited her, never knowing that one day her destiny would be entwined with Damon's once more.

For nine long years, Solange has lived a nightmare, wed to a wealthy lord whose handsome face hides a soul of darkest evil. Yet now, just as she is poised to finally make good her escape, Damon suddenly appears at the castle gate. Gone is the gentle hero of her childhood, replaced by a fiercely attractive, thunderously angry knight, who makes it clear he has never forgiven her betrayal. Convincing Damon to escort her to safety will take all Solange's ingenuity--but the real challenge lies in breaching the walls that Damon has built between them, to win back his trust. . . and his hardened heart.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Really 3.5 or 3.75 stars (reasons explained).......2006-04-01

I enjoyed this novel, especially as I've been reading too many poor or sub-par romance novels lately. The emotions between the main characters, Solange and Damon were very heartfelt. It is what I'd call a "mature" romance novel, and I guess I'd define that as a romance written a carefully nutured story line and characters (and GEE WHIZ, not a hint of a sequel in sight). This book is obviously the creation of a writer who cares about creating believeable, touching situations, and characters you can believe, too.

I really appreciated the way the story just flowed, but there is -- one rather large flaw -- SPOILER -- why didn't Solange check on whether Redmond was dead before she left his castle? But all that was written before this point was so fine, I could forgive this point.

I also appreciated the fact that the main characters admit they love each other, and that they establish a real marriage/relationship during the story. (There's no "it's-just-a-marriage-of-convenience-while-we-agonize-over-our-feelings-for-each-other-in-secret" nonsense.) The time they take to admit to each other that they love each other seemed reasonable, and at least they don't fight it ad nauseum throughout the book, or leave their "confessions" to the very end, as happens in so many romances.

The book is consistently interesting and involving, yet, I can't quite rate it as 4 stars. The slow pace of some of the story, while I appreciate most of it, did require a little kick now & then. And although I loved the characters' emotions, perhaps there was a little TOO much description/explanation of their deep inner feelings. I might be too hard on the book, but I think a 3.5 or 3.75 is a fair rating. A very solid, enjoyable medieval love story/romance. I would definitely read more by this writer.

5 out of 5 stars A Rose Indeed!.......2002-06-07

This was my first book by Shana Abe, and after this introduction, it will NOT be my last. This was a wonderful story of Lady Solange and Damon her childhood hero and love. She was the daughter of the Marquess and he the ward of a neighboring estate. They were brought up together and were kindred spirits at best. It was unspoken between them but Lady Solange knew that someday they would be together.

One day, at the age of 16, it came as a shock from her father the announcement that she would be wed the next day to the Earl Redmond. Knowing that Damon would fight for her, it was a test of her love for Damon to make him believe that she would wed the Earl of her own free will, otherwise Damon would be killed. What no one knew was the depravities which she would face once she left as the bride to the handsome and evil Earl of Redmond.

This was a very well written book with just the right blend of mystery and romance to keep one interested. I had trouble putting it down... definitely a gauge to rate this a 5* read!

4 out of 5 stars Great debut.......2000-04-20

Young, orphaned, Damon is taken in as a ward by the heroine's father and the two grow up together. They become as close as two souls can be and can't fathom the thought of life without the other. Unfortunately, this is medieval times and greedy men rule their daughters, so the two are torn apart and Solange is forced to marry a depraved man or else risk the life of her dear Damon.

After almost a decade of abuse Solange finds the means to escape the hellish man who's kept her prisoner and is reunited with Damon. Because they've both been hurt their reconciliation isn't an easy one and it's a long road before they're able to find bliss because they've got to confront, admit to, and get past their misconceptions and heartache.

I really liked the way the author avoided creating the stereotypical wronged and bitter hero. Damon was a dream hero, he was a lovely blend of contradictions; a powerful warrior and leader but also a tender healer, he was strong but not too strong and arrogant to admit to his love for Solange, even after all of the hell he'd been through. He didn't spend the book denying his feelings and striking out at the heroine. What a breath of fresh air! And I empathized with Solange who was courageous and never let her tortured past overwhelm her. She was abused and understandably scarred and scared but she didn't use her past as an excuse to keep Damon at arms length. Her gradual opening up to Damon's people was real and touching. In a nutshell I liked this book so much because the characters acted like adults who weren't afraid to admit what they felt in their hearts. It was refreshing and I definitely recommend this one, especially if you like strong relationship-based books and terrific character growth.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Storytelling.......2000-04-07

Ms. Abe spins a wonderful world all her own, drawing the reader well into the romance. It's true that reading her stories are like visiting a place you've never been before. But it's a compelling place, like a dream, and I love to visit.Solange and Damon are rich and deep people caught in a medieval struggle for power, destined to be together. It is easy to identify with each of them, and cheer them on. This is one of the finer romances I have read. Read it if you love strong characters and happy endings.

4 out of 5 stars A nice romance worth reading although somewhat lacking........2000-04-05

I thought that Shana Abe's book was fairly well written. I really like the characters and the general plot, although, I think Abe could have enhanced them. The characters didn't really grow on me and even though they might have, it didn't feel as if they developed much. I really would have liked to have more description, I didn't feel as if I was there. My overall feelings at the end were of somewhat disapointment and a feeling that the book could have been so much more. In the end though, I still enjoyed the novel and would recomend it.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great; a decent read.......2005-05-06

An interesting read with a determined suitor and a strong lady with little belief in her charms. Although books of this sort (brief Regencies) rarely delve deeply into issue and psychological or emotional troubles, this one at least addresses character-making beliefs and actions in some fashion. For me, the problem was that Ardith's self-doubt seemed overwhelming in the face of St. John's complete sincerity and devotion. Moreover, she is so capable that the reader has trouble accepting her opinion of herself. In addition, the rest of her family are pretty much one-note characters, though there are a few minor variations.

It had some very lovely moments, but didn't always hold up well. A good percentage of the action seems forced. It drags due to Ardith's stubbornness to believe in St. John.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, charming ..........2005-01-29

This is a book I have been wanting to read for some time - it being Savery's first romance published some years ago in hardback.
With all that build up, bad things are all too likely, but thank goodness I was not disappointed. This is a uniformly enjoyable book.
Lady Ardith Winter is the last of the Winter roses of the title, being the youngest of four sisters. They all were successful debutantes in London due to their blonde beauty. Alas, Ardith is completely different, dark, tall and outspokenly intelligent. As a result of this difference she has an outsize conviction of her own ugliness, much compounded by her disastrous season in London some years ago. Now she lives in happy, busy independence breeding horses, with her companion on the estate left to her by her aunt Sibley.
Then her father wrecks it all by a stupid outburst after the birth of yet another grandaughter. He will pay 10,000 pounds to the daughter who will produce a grandson. This brings out the worst in his sons-in-law and there hangs the tale.
For St. John, the Marquis of Rohampton, then re-enters Ardith's life. The disastrous London season crashed due to an awful scene involving his proposal to her. She thinks he played a cruel joke and he, utterly sincere, was devasted by her total rejection of him in the years since.
Now he takes new heart and decides to slowly win her back.
How he does so makes an engrossing read. There are good secondary characters, the blustering father, the silly sisters and their dim husbands, even if they are at times a trifle one dimensional.
My only niggle, was that Ardith was too determined in her conviction of her own lack of attraction and so treated St. John quite badly as a result.

    Book Description

A tribute to the memory of September 11

On September 11, 2001, two sisters from South Africa are flying to New York City with 2,400 roses to be displayed at a flower show. As their plane approaches the airport, a cloud of black smoke billows over the Manhattan skyline. When they land, they learn of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. All flights are canceled; the sisters cannot go home, and they are stranded with boxes and boxes of roses.

In the days that followed September 11, Jeanette Winter was drawn to Union Square and saw, among the hundreds of memorial offerings, twin towers made of roses. In the pages of this small and vibrant book, she tells a moving story.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Without a hurt the heart is hollow.......2004-12-23

Children's picture books about September 11th cover a huge range, from overly simplistic and insulting ("Fireboat" by Maira Kalman) to touching but vague salutes ("The Man Who Walked Between the Towers" by Mordecai Gerstein). "September Roses" is perhaps most remarkable because it is one of the few picture books to acknowledge the small acts of heroism that came out of a horrific unthinkable day. It's a book that remains complex and difficult to review if only because I'm still not certain what to think of it. Making 9-11 into something palatable to five-year-olds is a tricky proposition as it is. But while I may have my qualms with this book, I will concede that it's probably an okay way to introduce the subject of September 11th to one's children.

The book is based on a true story. One of the many unsung human moments that occurred during and after the days of the September attacks. It is about two sister who lived in South Africa growing commercial roses. Having entered their roses in the Agriflowers and Floritech Expo in New York City, they packed up 2,400 of the beauties for presentation. Their arrival, however, coincided with September 11th itself. With no Expo to attend and nowhere to go, the two were forced to live in the airport for a little while with their copious boxes of roses. After being taken in by members of the First United Methodist Church of Flushing, New York they decided to find some way to repay such kindness. All 2,400 roses were picked up and taken to Union Square. There, they were laid out in the shape of the twin towers, the center of New York's mourning. Says author Jeanette Winter in the end, "My tears fell on the roses".

It's a rather beautiful story, and one that Winter informs us is quite true. Of course, there are no facts or names presented in this tale. The women are never identified and therefore take on somewhat mythic proportions. One does wonder if Winter ever attempted to contact the women, or if she simply took their story for her own. It's certainly a good way of showing how individual people were affected by the ugliness of that day and the selflessness that came out of it. Still, I did wish it had at least been dedicated to them or something. The tone is particularly storybookish, as if writing in a style other than that of a fable would've been too harsh a choice. And again the factual factors bug me. Did the two women really live in a little house where flowers "brightened every room"? If so, why doesn't Winter say that she did the usual research on this tale?

As for the pictures, they are sparse pen and ink illustrations, occasionally colored in as appropriate. In the book, all pictures before the attacks are bright and jolly with an array of shades. The minute the towers are hit, however, the palate is entirely black and white and gray. The only colors left come from candles lit in memory, the flowers placed in the shape of the towers, and a single tear that waters them. The style fits the story well, and the only real objection I had to it was that this book (much like the unfortunate "Fireboat") decided that it would be a more dramatic, rather than accurate, choice to show the two planes approaching the towers together.

I think what the book does best is capture the expression of grief. This is a story that really does fill the reader, to some extent, with sorrow. And hope. There are just these niggling little flaws here and there that keep this from being THE quintessential method of explaining 9/11/01 to children. I liked it, but I still harbor some uncertainties about it. Undoubtedly some people will be able to look past my nitpicking and find the book to be a beautiful commemoration of a painful day. Others may find my points to be even more harrowing than I myself did. The book relies entirely on the reader's relationship to that day. For some, it will fill a void. For others, it'll trivialize that time. Recommended tentatively.

4 out of 5 stars Sweet Book of Kindness and Remembrance.......2004-10-12

This recount of 2 sisters traveling to a flower show who end up witness to one of the greatest tragedies in American history is full of sorrow, kindness and remembrance. It is a nice way to show another perspective.I like the simple ink illustrations.

      Book Description

The Olympic Peninsula has some of the most well-known major steelhead rivers in the world, and Doug Rose has been fly-fishing on them for decades.

This book is a great fishing guide for the area, but it goes so much deeper than that. Rose also discusses the wonderful history of the region, the famous fly-fishers and tiers, conservation issues, and special points of interest. The rivers covered in-depth, include: the Queets, Bogachiel, Hoh, and Quinalt, just to name a few. If you fish for steelhead, you need this book.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Colorful, Story Of The Steelhead.......2005-06-01

Doug Rose has authored an authoritative, entertaining, and artful narrative about one of the most amazing gamefish -- the sea run rainbow trout known as The Steelhead -- and one of its most pristine habitats: Washington state's Olympic Peninsula.

Rose writes in a colorful narrative style that brings the Olympic Peninsula's winter palette to life. He also introduces the reader to the people who live their lives in pursuit of, and in support of, this great sport fish. Within the story he weaves the important ecological issues regarding the management -- and mismanagement -- of this wild, fragile, natural resource. A series of color plates in the middle of the book bring the reader even closer to the subject.

This book is a fine read: a "literary fishing book" in the tradition of Roderick Haig-Brown and Harry Middleton; a book that should be -- and will be -- read and reread by lovers of fly lines and literary lines alike.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic testimonial to the Olympic rivers and their fish.......2005-02-17

Doug Rose has written a beautiful tribute to the West End rivers and the spectacular fish of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. Three parts conservation, one part natural history, with a bit of how-to fly fishing; Rose's passion for his subject comes through on every page. What makes this read particularly enjoyable is how easily he makes good writing seem effortless.

Rose comes across as a dedicated naturalist and astute observer of riverine habitats. These observations extend to the Peninsula's geography, climate, local history, local Tribes and conservation politics. Absent is the grandious bravado of many angling writers and their simple 'catch-and-tell' naratives. He presents solid arguments for protecting wild fish, particularly the remaining wild winter steelhead, from harvest and further habitat destruction. Most notably, he shares with us what these fish and rivers mean to him on an intimate level. Rose paints an image of the Olympic rain forest landscape that is both unique and precious; and outside National Park boundaries, remains in desparate need of protection.

I began reading this book to learn more about winter steelhead fishing from a technical perspective. While there are several sections relating to technical aspects, they are few and somewhat short on detail. Illustrations are limited to so-so quality photographs of West End riverscapes and many (but not all) of the flies described throughout the text. One small complaint concerns a number of typos remaining that the editor failed to catch. Admittedly though, my gripes are nominal.

I highly recommend this read for those wanting to enjoy an eloquant tribute to the remarkable anadromous fisheries of the Olympic Peninsula rivers.
