This book has really touched my loved one who is incarcerated. He has really enjoyed it and stated that the stories really give the extra step he needs sometimes.

I sent this book to my son who is incarcerated. He has read over half the book so far. He said the book is great. That it really gives him something to think about. He says the book should be manatory reading for everybody who is in a jail. He thinks the officers in charge of the prisoners should read it also, then maybe the harassment would stop.

Extremely Pleased and Thankful!.......2005-10-27
I personally did not read this book, however, I sent it to my 27 year old son who at the time was incarcerated as a result of a mix up with stolen identity (his ID having been stolen and used for criminal activities). It was an extremely difficult & spiritually frustrating time for him! This book made a tremendous difference and impact on his decision to rededicate his life to the Lord and allowing Him (Jesus Christ and God our Father) to "help" my son. My son derived much strength from the life stories of others, such as Chuck Colson, as well as all those that contributed their personal stories, in knowing that God is still on the thrown and has not forgotten those in the judicial prision/jail systems and that they are loved as much as those on the outside. My son said I could not have sent him a greater gift at the time. He also has shared it with many of the inmates who were interested in knowing how much the Lord loves them REGARDLESS of their circumstances, what we have done in life, as well as what we have not done in life to please the Lord. It helped many men and I am very grateful for the book and how quickly it was shipped!! That was a very important aspect as well since my son was in such a state of depression and needed some inspiration, hope, guidance and just plain down to earth stories about life in this difficult world. It helped him to keep on keeping on and having faith that God has a purpose for everything. Life catches us by surprise most of the time, however, it never catches the Lord by surprise. My son needed to know that it rains on the just and the unjust in this world, and it shines on the just and the unjust in this world (taken from the Bible). God is no respector of persons and this book clearly reveals that, but, he is a God of LOVE and he loves all his creations, including those that don't necessarily need a "hand out" but a "hand up" which are usually those incarcerated. Not all in the prison system want a get out of jail free. They just want justice done and this book allowed them, through the stories of those individual lives to know there is a "just God" in this world. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity to share my opinion/review and I hope it will benefit anyone interested in possibly purchasing this book!

I FOUND THIS BOOK ON AMAZON AFTER JUST BROWSING AROUND. MY SON IS IN PRISON IN UPSTATE NEW YORK AND I SENT HIM A COPY. HE TOLD ME HE GOT THE BOOK BUT NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ELSE. WELL THE OTHER DAY HE CALLED AND SAID "OH BY THE WAY YOU KNOW THAT BOOK THAT YOU SENT ME A FEW MONTHS AGO CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PRISONERS SOUL WELL ITS THE BEST BOOK I EVER EVER READ". IT IS SO INSPIRATIONAL AND HE SAID IT HELPS HIM THROUGH SOME DEPRESSING TIMES. HE HAS PASSED IT AROUND HIS PRISION DORM AND EVERY ONE TELLS HIM HOW THEY LOVED THE BOOK. This book was recommended to me by an inspirational speaker who spoke at my college. I can see how this book can be meant to inspire, especially the stories pertaining to "live your dream". Yes, this book does give you hope and to a certain degree persuades you to break the shackles which you have created for yourself; to break the rut which sometimes becomes our lives. Having said that, some stories were (to be perfectly honest) cheesy. Corny, even. "The Hugging Judge"? Come on, that sounds more like a scene from a C grade kid movie. Even so, good read at times, inspiring also .....at times. Short concise stories. Worth a read if you are willing to forgive the extra extra dose of too much sugar in the soup

Chicken Soup for the Soul is a series of short stories that often portray drama. The series would often describe people living with cancer conditions or people that are mentally disabled. I believe that the book's purpose is to make you happy for the person you are.
I liked the book, mainly because it cheers me up. This book not only makes your heart smile, but also your soul smile, with quotes such as: "Don't bug me! Hug me!" and even made the people who are the most crippled smile.
The second reason why I liked this book is because of the drama. There are some stories in the book at this play this such as: "I cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again." or people suffering under a medical condition such as: "The 26-year-old mother stared down at her son who dying of terminal leukemia." For this one, this amuses me more than comedy.
My favorite park in this series is a short story called "The Hugging Judge." It tells about a kind-hearted judge who would go around hugging everyone he sees. When he is sent to a place for the mentally stupid people, he is pleaded a hug an old man named Leonardo. It is said that because of that, the old man smiled, in the first time during 23 years.

I read this collection of life stories and events with an admitedly negative attitude toward it because of my dislike of the first book of this collection. Nevertheless, I thought that this volume was even worse than it's predicessor. I don't believe that this book has any literary value to it at all. It most certainly didn't make me feel better about my life. Personally I believe that these events are things that happen to everyone in their lifetime. Merely reading about them AGAIN had even less appeal to me than it did the first time.

At first I thought it was just another popular book, but when I read these stories, I fell in love with this books. I've Tasted Better Chicken Soup.......2005-05-19
I've read other Chicken Soup for the Soul books before, but this one isn't as good in my opinion. I can see how other people might enjoy the book, but I didn't. Some of the stories seemed lengthy and without a point, but while reading other stories I wanted to beg for more details because the story was so short. The topics of the stories were good choices and would bring inspiration to some of the people who read them. Some stories didn't seem to fit their topic though and didn't have quite enough detail.
I especially liked the sections "A Matter of Perspective" and Overcoming Obstacles." The stories in these two sections made you look (if only for a few seconds) at life in a little different way. The stories showed how attitude and strong beliefs could help you through some of the most difficult times in your life.
One part of the books I really didn't like was the fact that several of the stories were about death. When suffering a loss stories like those can be inspirational but too many stories in that topic gets depressing in my opinion.
I think this book is a good Chicken Soup for the Soul book. I also think that the other Chicken Soup for the Soul books were better.

I think that this book was terrific, even though there were other Chicken Soup books that I thought were better. Almost all of the stories had a moral in them and the ones in the end especially made me cry. I think that the Chicken Soup books will be great just like they are now in the years to come.

Although I _LOVED_ the stories in the other books of this series (and highly recommend the other books), I was very disappointed with this one. Perilously few "reached" or "touched" me as they had in the earlier books.

Chicken Soup, No Matzo Balls.......2007-07-05
Every culture has a version of chicken soup. So what makes "Chicken Soup" so Jewish? Matzo balls. The uniquely Jewish ingredient in Jewish Chicken Soup is the matzo balls.
This book is a lot like chicken soup without the matzo balls. Is it about Jews? Yes. Does it have a Jewish soul? No. I can't point to any specific thing in the book or about the book that made me feel it wasn't Jewish. Just like when I eat my Mexican-American neighbor's chicken soup I can't point to anything that is specifically not Jewish about it, but it is not Jewish chicken soup. I mean a chicken is a chicken is a chicken, right? But it is not. Maybe it is the fried tortillas floating on top instead of the matzo balls or the presence of cilantro instead of celery, I do not know. But it definitely is not Jewish. There is something missing and that is how I felt after reading this book. There was some Jewish element missing.
Of course there were all of the correct ingredients, the book has a number of stories of Holocaust survivors finding lost family members in the most unusal ways. It has a number of stories about people finding faith, the will to go on and all of the other things you find in a _Chicken Soup for the Soul_ book. But it just wasn't Jewish feeling.
Instead of this book, I highly recommend reading the collections of Shlomo Carelbach stories if you are looking for something Jewish and uplifting. The book I most highly recommend is: _Reb Shlomele: The Life and World of Shlomo Carlebach_ (Hardcover) by Dr. Gabriel A. Sivan (Translator), M. Brandwein (Author). After that I recommend Holy Brother: Inspiring Stories and Enchanted Tales about Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach Yitti H Mandelbaum personally knew Reb Shlomo and her books about him are fabulous.
Quite uplifting........2006-01-04
I read this book at a rather appropriate time, seeing as I'm writing my thesis regarding the treatment of Jews in post World War II Los Angeles this coming semester. I found the stories sweet and uplifting, or moving and intriguing. It's a quick read, and an enjoyable one. Some stories were a bit schmaltzy, a little too saccharine, but for the most part they were quite good.

"Chicken Soup for the Jewish Soul" is almost redundant; Jewish chicken soup was the original cure-all in the first place! This collection of 101 stories is divided into several thematic units that demonstrate the power and beauty of Judaism in the synagogue and in our daily lives. Sections include To Life, Being A Jew, On Love and Kindness, Our Common Humanity, Family, The Holocaust, Insights and Lessons, Eclectic Wisdom, and a glossary of Hebrew and Yiddish terms.
Several well-known names are represented (Anne Frank, Kirk Douglas, Golda Meir, Mayor Ed Koch), but every story is a gem, a remembrance of a feisty bubbe, of families reunited after the war, of Nazi persecution and surviving the death camps, of Soviet repression and the dangers and joys of living in Israel. The common thread is the strength of faith and prayer in the face of adversity, and nowhere is the beauty of davening more clearly illustrated than in "My Five-Year-Old Spiritual Teacher" by Rabbi Devora Bartnoff. The Larry Trapp story is amazing, and I was deeply touched by the Billings, Montana, the "Rabbi's blessing," and the Ed Koch/Mother Teresa stories and the Anne Frank excerpt. These are stories about the power of human kindness and about the value ALL people have to God. I am not Jewish myself, but I loved this book. It shows that (in the words of Voltaire) "prejudice is the reason of fools."

The sections covered in here are about love, kindness, parents and parenting, teaching and learning, death and dying, matter of perspective, overcoming obstacles, and elective wisdom. Everyone and anyone who reads this book can find stories that they can relate to, while enjoying them. Happiness and sorrow is merely a speck of all the emotions felt throughout this amazing book. When reading this you are able to learn the different kinds of situations there are and the everyday people who go through them. I have read several of the Chicken Soup books and love them all. A five star rating is not high enough, it should be ten! I recommend all of the ones that I've read to all of my friends and even give out the Chicken Soup Calendars as gifts. I want them to experience the feelings that I have when I read the books. (My favorite story is the one about adoption when a child says that an adopted child is one that grows in her mommy's heart instead of her belly.)

I had read all three of the Chicken Soup books until 5 days ago when I recieved book 4 for my 11th birthday. There was one story that I read that made me realize what beautiful really is. That story was called "Beautiful on the Inside". It was about a little girl who when told she was beautiful, replied boredly, "Yes, I know!". Then her mother explained to her how to be beautiful on the inside. Then two years after, the child's friend's mother had died and they went to visit her grave. The little girl showed great care and love and sorrow to her friend. Then, after the child's friend left, she asked her mother,"Mommy, was I beautiful on the inside?"

This bookis great for any son or father to read and make them realize why their sons or fathers did things they did and maybe still do. It will have you smiling, laughing, and also crying. I have many Chicken Soup books and I rate this a a tie with The Veterans Soul book. Read it and enjoy.
Sappy and overly religious.......2005-01-30
An earlier reviewer was correct: This is story after story about immature fathers who come to the "big realization" that they actually need to be good fathers. And we're supposed to find this inspiring?
In addition, perfectly good stories are ruined by bizarre, out-of-the-blue religious non sequiturs such as "God was remodeling my son." Huh? As if the father has nothing to do with helping his son. One guy prays to God that his son will catch a fish. Yeah, people are starving in Africa, but God's going to make sure this kid catches a fish. Uh huh.
In another case, a father "asked the Lord to help back off a little" when a son is benched. Does he ask the Lord to help him go to the bathroom, too? Sheesh. There's something pathetic about fathers who take no responsibility for their actions--whether admirable actions or immature actions.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised about the pervavise religious content when authors include evangelists James Robinson and Chuck Swindoll.
If you want to hear God mentioned every 3 pages and want to read about immature fathers, this is the sappy book for you.
Wonderful reading.......2002-07-11
I picked up "Chicken Soup for the Father's Soul" in an airport bookshop as I departed for a four-day business trip. At the time I traveled very frequently, and I had planned to read a story only occasionally, saving them for those times when my thoughts wandered upon my two sons at home and refused to be redirected elsewhere. However, I found myself reading story after story, and by the time I had returned home, I had finished the book and was giving some of the stories a second read.
In the enclosed quarters of an airplane cabin, I found myself unsuccessfully struggling to contain my laughter, nonchalantly wiping tears from my eyes, and silently reflecting upon my own relationships as father and son.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy sometime. These stories will move you.

Enjoyable reading; great to read aloud to your husband.......2002-02-16
I enjoyed the stories in Chicken Soup for the Father's Soul. Some make you laugh and some come pretty close to making you cry. I bought the book because I enjoy reading out loud to my husband and though it's not a book he would buy for himself, I thought it was one he would like. He did. If you are looking for a "feel good" book for the dad in your life, you can't go wrong with this book. Another great book for dads is 15 Reasons I Love My Dad. I decided to buy my oldest son a copy of "Chicken Soup for the Father's Soul" for Fathers Day. I like to find thoughtful gifts for my children...the amount of money that I spend on a gift is not as important as the thought behind it. I was pleased with the variety of the short stories in the book. I think a busy man like my son is much more likely to read a couple of short stories at a time, and I like to think he would be getting some positive encouragement at the same time. He is a great father, and I love him very much.

I have several of the Chicken Soup books, I would love to have them all! I can sit for hours and read the short stories over and over. I've noticed that my pastor uses alot of them in his sermons also. It just warms my heart when I read the touching stories about struggles and triumphs in the lives of others. Some say that the series is depressing but I find that when I'm in a dark moment I can read or recall some of the stories I've read and I feel better. They just help shed new light on certain situations. Great gifts also. I've given them to friends and family members on different occasions. They loved them.

The theme of nearly all of the "stories" relvolve about death (someone else's) which leaves the survivor as the victor or sometimes just the survivor. Sounds like bad medicine to me. The smarmy introductions provided by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen set the scene for real tear jerkers with no moral to the whole sad production. Don't waste your money and postage on this. I'm requesting a refund. Alex Ryan

My beloved friend gave me this book for a gift. This is the most wonderful book I've read recently. It reminded me how we were when we were young and naive. If you are wondering what to get for friend who you love, this is it.

This is one of the most uplifting books I have ever read. I now own almost all of the Chicken Soup books and I find them helpful in many ways. Each story is fairly short and offers hope and inspiration. They take away all of the ickiness life has to offer. These books also make great gifts!
