Book Description
It began with Benny Hogan and Eve Malone, growing up, inseparable, in the village of Knockglen. Benny—the only child, yearning to break free from her adoring parents...Eve—the orphaned offspring of a convent handyman and a rebellious blueblood, abandoned by her mother's wealthy family to be raised by nuns. Eve and Benny—they knew the sins and secrets behind every villager's lace curtains...except their own.
It widened at Dublin, at the university where Benny and Eve met beautiful Nan Mahlon and Jack Foley, a doctor's handsome son. But heartbreak and betrayal would bring the worlds of Knockglen and Dublin into explosive collision. Long-hidden lies would emerge to test the meaning of love and the strength of ties held within the fragile gold bands of a...

Customer Reviews:
A delightful novel........2007-07-14
Since other reviewers go into detail about the plots and subplots, I'll simply say I am not a Binchy fan and didn't expect to enjoy this book.
Was I surprised. The story's setting switches between provincial Knockglen and modern Dublin, with a large cast of characters that are introduced so wonderfully you never have difficulty understand who's who, or what's happening to whom.
And the characters! Binchy somehow manages to keep the plot quite tense with lots of intrigues and sometimes heartache so that you're constantly wanted to turn the page to learn what happens, and yet she keeps the mood uplifting and never resorts to maudlin resolutions, OR the grim nastiness found in so many novels today. The characters are very real and...human. Often funny, and always interesting.
This novel is all about friendship, loyality, and love. And the ending may not turn out the way you wish- but it's a very good, satisfying ending.
Heartwarming Story!.......2006-12-09
This is a great book. The main character is so likeable. I did not want the book to end!
This is the best of Binchy.......2006-09-18
When the movie based on Circle of Friends came out, I had never even heard of Maeve Binchy. I loved the movie, and it inspired me to read the book. Thank you, thank you, movie industry for introducing me to Maeve.
That said, don't ever watch the movie, read the book instead!!
I fell in love with this novel and with its characters. There are some "lesser" characters who never made it to the movie, and that was a huge loss. I can't imagine this story without Peggy Pine and Clodagh, or the sad Kit Hegarty.
Binchy has an absolute gift for character development. You get to know these people thoroughly over the space of the novel. Some you grow to love (like the prickly Eve and the nutty Aidan), others you grow to hate (like icky Sean). She weaves the story around every-day life, with a few major incidents tossed in. Maybe a little more happened in this circle's year than in most, but the story line is still paced quite well.
There is no fairy-tale ending in Circle of Friends. Just what might happen in real life. Tragedy occurs, mistakes are made, and people move on. This is the absolute best of Maeve Binchy, and anybody who wants to get to know her should start with Circle of Friends.
great.......2006-07-01
This was the first book I have read from this author. I thought it was awesome. It does a few chapters to get into but its great. I recommended this book to one of my friends and she thinks it is great as well
Another great read.......2006-03-24
It seems to be a common storyline in Maeve's books - tragic events in an Irish's woman's life - but each of her books are hard to put down. I have seen this movie before reading the book, but loved the book as well as any other.

When a young boy anonymously shares his snack with a homeless man, he begins a cycle of good will. A touching story that demonstrates the powerful effect that a simple gesture can have. Without a single written word, this book effectively speaks of helping, sharing, and caring.

A truly rapturous and inspiring picture book.......2003-09-12
A Circle Of Friends is a warm and caring wordless story which is "written" and illustrated by Giora Carmi. When a young boy anonymously donates his snack to a homeless man, he begins a cycle of goodwill that reverberates and expands in a great circle of kindness. A Circle Of Friends is distinctive in that it is told entirely through illustrations - which have the powerful characteristic of being in black and white with a single color highlight. A truly rapturous and inspiring picture book, A Circle Of Friends is strongly recommended for inclusion in school and community library picture book collections.

Summer in the tiny Texas town of Antler is traditionally a time for enjoying Wylie Womack's Bahama Mama snow cones and racking up the pins at Kelly's Bowl-a-Rama, but this year it's not going well for Toby Wilson. His 13-year-old heart has been broken twice: once by his mother, who left him and his father to become a country singer in Nashville, and then again by his crush Scarlett Stalling, the town beauty who barely acknowledges Toby's existence. But when Zachary Beaver, "The World's Fattest Boy," comes to Antler as part of a traveling sideshow, Toby begins to realize that there might just be people who have it worse than him. By reaching out to Zachary in small ways--such as helping him realize his lifelong dream of being baptized--Toby is better able to put his own problems into perspective. At the baptism, Toby finally feels at peace: "Zachary smiles and I wonder if he's feeling different. Because standing here waist deep in Gossimer's Lake... I'm feeling different--light and good and maybe even holy." By summer's end, Toby's friendship with Zachary has provided him with the emotional stamina to begin dealing with his mother's decision and to gracefully accept the fact that Scarlett will forever be just beyond his reach.
With Zachary Beaver, Kimberly Willis Holt, author of the award-winning My Louisiana Sky, further explores southern-flavored small town life. Toby's quirky, yet ultimately rewarding coming of age story will serve as a gentle reminder to teens that sometimes the best way to work through your problems is by helping others with theirs. (Ages 11 to 15) --Jennifer Hubert

Zach Rocks.......2007-05-22
Nothing ever happens in Toby and Cal's small town of Antler, Texas, until the summer of 1971 when Zachary Beaver, the fattest boy in the world, comes to town. Zachary is very depressed; his mom died right after he was born, and he is "The Fattest Boy in the World," so he has crowds looking and staring at him every day. Zachary can be nice or rude at any time and he has a very hard time just getting around. Zachary has to stay alone in his trailer while his guardian, Paulie Rankin, looks for a new sideshow act. Meanwhile Toby's life is going downhill; his mom left the family to become a singer. Cal's older brother, Wayne, has left town to go fight in the Vietnam War and the girl of Toby's dreams is going out with another guy. How will Toby and Cal get their family and friends back? Can Cal and Toby help Zachary be happier and can Zachary help Cal and Toby get their friends and family back?
Opinion
My opinion of the book is very positive. I liked this book because the author is very descriptive and I can actually picture what is happening. When the author describes Zachary I don't need a picture to see him because I can already see him clearly in your head. The author also makes me think what it would be like to be in Zachary's shoes. If you are interested in realistic stories or stories of small towns doing bigger things that would happen in New York or London you will absolutely love this book as much as I did.
The Big Boy.......2007-05-22
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town is one of my favorite choices. One day Toby and Cal are riding their books bikes when a old blue Thunderbird pulling a trailer comes. Toby and Cal go check it out , it is Zachary Beaver the fattest boy in the world. The next time they go back by the trailer third graders are there messing with the trailer so Toby and Cal start throwing rocks at them and hit Zachary's trailer window. They want to baptize Zachary at Gossimer Lake. Zachary arees and he gets batized. The day Zachary leaves everyone is sad. My favorite part in the story is when Zachary gets batized because he almost got stuck in the water because hes so fat. The book reminds me when I saw some of the fattest people in the world. When you read this book it feels like your really tere. If you want to read a good book , this is one you should read.
When Zachary Beaver came to town.......2007-05-22
In the book When Zachary Beaver Came to Town the supposovly fattest boy in the world comes to the small panhandle town of Antler,Texas the life of Toby Wilson is about to change forever. After seeing Zachary in his trailer they looked in the Guiness book of world recordsonly to find that Zachary isn't the fattest person in the world. When forced to visit Zachary by sheriff Levi,Toby finds that people in Antler are giving Zachary food. When a car parks infront of Cal's house officers tell grave news that Wayne, Cal's brother died in Vietnam and there was a funeral for Wayne.Towards the end of the book Zachary gets baptized at Gossimer lake.
When Zachary Beaver Came to town.......2007-05-22
Do you want to know about a really great book?I thought so.Well this books name is when Zachary Beaver came to town. This book is about a boy named Toby and his mom went to be a country singer. Also there's a boy named Cal and his brother has gone to war. Then you should know there's a boy named Zachary just came to Antler,Texas.Zachary wants to get baptized but he doesn't know how,so Cal and Toby help him.Now I don't want to give away anything exciting so I'll just answer some questions. An interesting character is Scarlett because she has a great personality when she was hanging out with Toby and when she kissed him.I did not like it when Wayne dies because he was such a generous and caring person when he kept writing letters to Toby even though he didn't answer.A suprising part was when Scarlett kissed Toby because I thought she still liked Juan.
When Zachary Beaver Came to Town.......2007-05-22
Nothing ever happens in Antler,Texas as said by Toby in When Zachary Beaver Came to Town nothing at all until a trailor comes to town with the words "Fattest Kid in the World!"All around town people are getting 2$ and linning up to see the Fattest Boy in the World.Toby's mother was in Nashville,Tennesee and sent Toby a letter saying she wouldnt be comming back to Antler but staying in Nashville. Many more things will happen in Toby's young life. Check out When Zachary Beaver Came to Town right away!If you have any questions I can give you just a little bit more info.1. An interesting character in the book is Zachary because he has a great imagination when he thinks that the cotton fields are a giant ocean.A suprising part in the book is when Toby danced with Scarlett (the girl of his dreams) and she didn't know that Toby liked her.I think I have told to much so I hope you check out When Zachary Beaver Came to Town because it rocks!

Customer Reviews:
Mary Jane and her friends Harry, Liz and Flash have problems.......2005-05-28
"Mary Jane, Volume 1: Circle of Friends" reminds me a lot of more of television's "Smallville" than any of the Spider-Man comic books for several key reasons. First, this four-part story by writer Sean McKeever and artist Takeshi Miyazawa is set in its own little Marvel universe. This is not "The Amazing Spider-Man" where Mary Jane Watson was not around when Peter Parker was attending at Midtown High, nor is it "The Ultimate Spider-Man" where Mary Jane is not only around at the beginning, she is the girl next door and knows that Peter is Spidey.
Second, both Peter Parker and Spider-Man are really secondary figures in this story. The emphasis is on Mary Jane, her boyfriend Harry Osborn (who was not around in the high school days of the original comic), her best friend Liz Allen, and Liz's boyfriend Flash Thompson. Peter is the science geek that Flash insults and when Spider-Man rescues MJ from Electro and takes her home (he explains he knows where she lives because it is, ah, one of his special powers) she has a crush on the mysterious superhero and she confesses to Liz she wants him to take her to homecoming.
But this is not about a high school girl having a superhero as a date for homecoming. It is about a high school girl who does not understand why she is not happy with her boyfriend. Harry pays for everything and MJ does not like it, so she goes out and gets a job to carry her own weight. She is also a kid who is concerned that Liz is calling Flash "stupid" all the time and she thinks it is really starting to affect him. But then she finds out there is a bigger problem for her small circle of friends when she discovers Flash is "crushing" on her.
Sound like a teenage soap opera? Absolutely. But take away the fact that every once in a while MJ runs into Spider-Man and you have a pretty serious attempt at dealing with typical teenage problems (certainly more realistic than "The O.C." and arguably more so than "Smallville"). There is also some decent role-modeling involved since these kids talk about their problems, albeit indirectly in many cases. At the heart of the stories is Mary Jane, which justifies having the Spider-Man face that appears between her first and middle names on the cover is in the shape of a heart. She is an interesting kid.
We are currently three-quarters of the way through the next story, "Mary Jane, Volume 2: Homecoming," which picks up right where "Circle of Friends" leaves off, which is good because this one ends with what is no so much a cliffhanger as a major crisis point for MJ and her friends. These comic books are doing more than re-modeling Mary Jane Watson as the girl next door, whereas she was the ultimate party girl in "The Amazing Spider-Man." Besides, the way Miyazawa draws her Mary Jane is really cute. No wonder Peter Parker is pinning for her from afar and no wonder the rest of us are willing to read these comic books.
Good and Bad.......2005-03-03
It is great to see a comic book aimed at teenage girls, there should be a lot more of them. The small size allows it to go on the shelf with the manga rather then with the comic trades.
The problem is that the comic itself is quite predictable and nothing that is any more interesting then what one would find on any of the television dramas aimed at teenage girls. It is also a very fast read for six dollars.
It is great to see Marvel (in this case, though i could easily be saying DC also) marketing something like this, I only wish that it would have been something better.
A rarity ; a book aimed at the female demograhic.......2004-11-06
I, having a rather well documented history of not being a teenaged girl, can only speculate on whether or not this book would appeal to them but my gut tells me its probably so. `Mary Jane' is a re-imagining of the Spider-Man mythos from the viewpoint of 16-year-old Mary Jane Watson and the world around her. One of the points of interest is that Spider-Man himself has very little on-panel time in this book, making only two solid appearances over the four issues with Peter Parker having little more than a handful of lines in his few cameos. Most of the four issues collected here focus on the relationships between MJ, Liz Allen, Flash, and Harry Osborne. Sean Mckeever of Marvel's Mystique and Sentinel (of which he makes light of here, forever endearing him to me) handles the writing chores for MJ's adventures that include teen-age staples like shopping for a homecoming dress, getting your first job, and your first boyfriend. Art chores are handled by Takeshi Miyazawa, who brings a very anime-styled flair to the book. However, don't denounce the book off the bat just for that fact. Even as someone as staunchly against eastern styled art in my comics as I am I was able to enjoy the series, and my distaste for it is almost as well documented as the me not being a teenaged girl thing. Special mention should also be given to Christina Strain, the series colourist. Because of her, every image contained here nearly pops off of the page.
Should you buy this book? Why not. I know some people may be to stuck up to think of having a book like this on the shelf with books like Watchmen or DKR, but Mary Jane is a fun, different take on the love of Spider-Man's life, and for the price is too good to be passed up.
Book Description
Fresh on the heels of his New York Times bestselling and National Book Award- nominated novel, Drop City, T.C. Boyle has spun an even more dazzling tale that will delight both his longtime devotees and a legion of new fans. Boyle's tenth novel, The Inner Circle has it all: fabulous characters, a rollicking plot, and more sex than pioneering researcher Dr. Alfred Kinsey ever dreamed of documenting . . . well, almost.
A love story, The Inner Circle is narrated by John Milk, a virginal young man who in 1940 accepts a job as an assistant to Dr. Alfred Kinsey, an extraordinarily charming professor of zoology at Indiana University who has just discovered his life's true calling: sex. As a member of Kinsey's inner circle of researchers, Milk (and his beautiful new wife) is called on to participate in sexual experiments that become increasingly uninhibitedand problematic for his marriage. For in his later years Kinsey (who behind closed doors is a sexual enthusiast of the first order) ever more recklessly pushed the boundaries both personally and professionally.
While Boyle doesn't resist making the most of this delicious material, The Inner Circle is at heart a very moving and very loving look at sex, marriage, and jealousy that will have readers everywhere reassessing their own relationshipsbecause, in the end, love is all there is.
Customer Reviews:
a must for every body to read.......2007-01-10
it is wel written and very good to read. A must
Not bad, but not Boyle's best.......2006-08-03
The Inner Circle, T.C. Boyle's novel based on the life of pioneering sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, is a decent read that goes on rather longer than it needs to. The book is interesting, and not just for prurient reasons (although there is plenty in the book to satisfy the prurient), but also for the portrait of Kinsey. Boyle really captures his strangeness and the obsessive genius that drove him. However, the first half of the book is much better than the second - there's more humor, the plot is fun and a little bit racy, and the entire narrative is imbued with the innocence and idealism with which Kinsey began his project. As the story goes on, however, all that idealism evaporates and with it goes much of the energy of the book. It becomes a dark story of manipulation and monomania as Kinsey's obsessions become increasingly powerful and his need to control the lives of those around him become more overt.
All in all, I would say that it's a good book, but not a great one. It's certainly not Boyle's best work; both Drop City and World's End are better, although I suspect that his short stories are probably the best showcase for his talent. Anyone who's interested in Boyle is probably better off picking up If the River Was Whiskey (which includes the great story "Sorry Fugu"), and anyone who's interested in Kinsey or the Institute for Sex Research is better off just renting the movie Kinsey.
Very Good, but...Not..........2006-07-16
This review is, in a way, a split personality. "The Inner Circle" is another great example of T.C. Boyle's mastery of his prose; the characters are well defined and fleshed-out, the story arc moves forward and well as character development deepens...but, it was just a little too long winded - not Boyle's writing, but the story itself.
How do you separate the two? Well, it is probably because this book is based on facts and real people. Boyle does a great job of bringing this chapter of American cultural history to life, but the second half of the story is a bit too drawn out; I don't blame this on Boyle, because I believe the real events actually transpired that way and Boyle did a great job of capturing that. The film "Kinsey" was the exact same way. The story is fascinating about the research and early developments, but gets a bit tiring as it gets into the latter years and the battle Kinsey had to go through.
So what does that mean? I think that it means (I am too young to actually remember the events) that I felt at the end the same way the characters did in real life...tired of the closed-mindedness of the repressed in America. It is kind of like rolling my eyes when the Attorny-General of the US covers up the lady liberty statue because it exposes a breast; this kind of stuff is exhausting to keep track of and defend against. And I think that Kinsey was that way in the end; and so was I after reading this book (and watching the movie).
I recommend this book, but reader beware...when you are done, you may feel the same way that Kinsey (and I) did at the end.
Well Written Snoozer.......2006-06-10
I'm a big fan of TC Boyle but I just couldn't get into this book. His last novel, Drop City, was one of those rare books where the characters are drawn so expertly and their situation so intersting, that the book could go on forever. Unfortunately, this book, The Inner Circle, is none of those things, and only feels like it goes on forever. This is a literary novel where everything is over-described merely for descriptions sake. Take for instance the scene where the two protagonists, John Milk, an assistant to Alfred Kinsey, and Kinsey himself, are interviewing prostitutes out on a city street. The cops come and arrest the pair. Boyle writes "...and dropped two conjoined disks of metal over my wrists. In a word, handcuffs." Ten or so words to describe something everybody is already familiar with and can readily visualize, handcuffs, and then goes and uses the word anyway.
All that boring detail wouldn't be so bad if the book and the subject matter were interesting. But they aren't. The book keeps Kinsey and his research as a backdrop to what it's really about, a fictionalized character by the name of John Milk who is there from the beginning. We get to see his life in detail, from school, to marriage, to fatherhood and everything in between.
This was 400 pages of very well written verbiage with no point to it. It was something that wasn't that enjoyable and which I forced myself to finish.
Good writing...but to what end?.......2006-02-02
There's no doubting T.C. Boyle's chops - the writing itself in "The Inner Circle" is top-notch. However, the storyline was so off-putting, it became harder and harder to finish the book. Finally, I was down to about 15 pages a day. Don't get me wrong: I picked up "Circle" because I saw and enjoyed Bill Condon's "Kinsey: Let's Talk About Sex." But where Condon's movie artfully balanced Prok's brilliance, his...ummm...quirks, and the political pressures, Boyle's book focuses increasingly on Prok's sexual "acting out" as the tale goes on. And, wow, does it get odd. If you saw "Kinsey," stop there. The book didn't add to my knowledge of Kinsey.
And, one note of the power of film: reading the book, I couldn't get the image of Liam Neeson out of my head. I had to go online to see pictures of the real Kinsey to dislodge Neeson from my brain. It reminded me what a great and brave job he and Peter Skarsgard turned in.
Book Description
Real life, with its greatest hurts and grandest dreams, is the basis for Circle of Friends, Just off Main, a deeply engaging women's fiction series by actress Jennifer O'Neill.
Book one, A Fall Together, introduces the quintet of primary female characters. Varied in age, ethnicity, and economic status, they are united by their small town citizenship, their spiritual crossroads, and the determination to take on their personal issues with hope.
In this season of the faith journey, they laugh, cry, and pray together through a teenage pregnancy, breast cancer, a troubled exhusband, and other major matters of the heart.

You must be patient........2006-11-10
This book takes a while to get into - you must be patient and learn about each character individually. This is the first in a series so I got just a taste obviously and I was disappointed that I really didn't get to dive into the story line further. I do hope the next one will be easier to identify with earlier. I am a fan of Christian fiction, but this is my first book from this author. Overall, good reading.
Great Story!.......2006-08-27
I just finished reading "A Fall Together", what a great story. Funny how the two sisters reminded me of myself and my sister. I hope one day she will see Christ through my actions. And I have two teenage daughters at home that I'm consistently struggling to keep the doors of communication open too. Jennifer has blended this community and circle of friends into a wonderful story. It would be a great to see a story like this in film one day too. I'll be looking for the next book in the series that is scheduled to be released in Jan 2007.
Refreshing Read.......2006-08-14
Though I don't have much time to read, I made time to read this book! Ms. O'Neill out did herself on this one, addressing life issues in a sometimes humorous always honesty manner. Her characters are real, her writing style is unique and her book is well worth the read. I highly recommend it!
A Great Read!.......2006-07-06
"A Fall Together" is a wonderful story of the importance faith, family, and friendship in the struggles of life, written with all the passion that Jennifer O'Neill always writes with. I found myself constantly drawn back to the story until I finished the book, and now I am anxiously waiting for the next part of the story in the next book. As one who works with single again adults I found the struggles of Lauren, Irene and their children realistic and true to life. This is a great book and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes a great story.

JENNIFER O'NEILL IS AMAZING!!!.......2006-06-06
Jennifer O'Neill has done it yet again. We loved her other books and this one is incredible. It is filled with Danielle Steele characters and has a touch of Desperate Housewives. Jennifer, this book would make a wonderful mini-series for TV or even a series of videos that people can purchase. Your heart felt cry is heard in this book and that is what makes this book a must read. We were able to read the entire book and not want to put it down - each problem the characters faced seem real, the characters have depth and the story makes the reader get drawn into their world and their situations. You feel for the characters and it makes you cry. Thanks for having the heart of compassion and a desire to help people deal with situations. We hope you will continue writing more good books and you know we will be telling others about this wonderful book. Hope to see it on a best sellers list.

Book Description
Real life, with its greatest hurts and grandest dreams, is the basis for CIRCLE OF FRIENDS, JUST OFF MAIN, a deeply engaging fiction series for real women of all walks heartily written by actress Jennifer O'Neill.
Book two, A Winter of Wonders, reveals even more of the dynamics between at-odds sisters Lauren and Irene, the troublesome budding romance between Irene's teenage daughter and basketball star Trace, the hardscrabble times of Trace's widowed mom Stephanie, and life after breast cancer surgery for Stephanie's prayer group friend Eleanor.
In this wintry season of the faith journey, there are moments of coldness as well as merciful warmth. While some characters wonder what drama could possibly unfold next, others marvel at the wonders of God's grace.

A Great Read!.......2007-02-16
Winter of Wonders is such an intriguing sequel to A Fall Together in the Cirlcle of Friends Series. A real cliffhanger, too. Jennifer O'Neill has the ability to take you right where her characters are emotionally. There were times when I would have a tear streaming down my cheek from the passion of her words. If you want a great read, buy a Winter of Wonders! It won't dissapoint you ...

Book Description
When Edith Wharton became friends with Henry James, she joined a group of men who became her "inner circle." This group included both well-known figures, such as James, Percy Lubbock, and Bernard Berenson, and several now forgotten, including John Hugh Smith, Walter Berry, Gaillard Lapsley, Robert Norton, and Howard Sturgis. Drawing on unpublished archival material by and about members of the circle, Susan Goodman here presents an intimate view of this American expatriate community, as well as the larger transatlantic culture it mirrored. She explores how the group, which began forming around 1904 and lasted until Wharton's death in 1937, defined itself against the society its founders had left in the United States, while simultaneously criticizing and accommodating the one it found in Europe. Tracing Wharton's individual relationships with these men and their relationships with one another, she examines literary kinships and movements in the biographical and feminist context of gender, exile, and aesthetics. She also relates the group to other literary circles, such as the Bloomsbury group and Gertrude Stein's salon.
