Fallen heroes.......2007-09-25
"END OF WATCH- Chicago Police Killed in the Line of Duty 1853-2006" offers a respectful and sometimes heartrending case-by-case examination of the 534 Chicago police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of public order and safety. This is no mere encyclopaedia: the authors give us a detailed narrative of each fallen officer's career and accomplishments, making the book as much a celebration of their lives as a tribute to their deaths.
Using municipal records, police files, contemporary newspapers, and interviews with families / descendants of the slain men and women, Burke and O'Gorman have managed to document the history of the Chicago Police Department from its earliest days to the present. As Chicago itself evolved from prairie outpost to Midwestern metropolis, its police force underwent a simultaneous transformation, changing from a collection of elected constables to a major urban peacekeeping force. With progress came new dangers, and corresponding casualties.
The postmortem roll call begins with Constable James Quinn, who died on December 5, 1853 after being brutally assaulted by local hoodlums, and ends with the January 2006 death of Patrolman Eric Solorio, whose vehicle crashed during a high-speed pursuit. Expert commentary on the Department's history, stunning illustrations and photos, and data tables that document arrests, causes of death, number of CPD deaths by rank, and officers killed by year make "END OF WATCH" an authoritative history of the Chicago PD.
I was especially moved by a grainy photo of Patrolman Casper Lauer (died September 18, 1854 after being stabbed by a criminal he was trying to arrest) in his coffin. This image was provided to the authors courtesy of Lauer's descendants. They gave it the perfect description: "an eerie image of a sad moment in Chicago's early history."
great book.......2007-05-06
I really enjoyed this book, coming from a family of Chicago Police officers you see how dangerous this job can be. Ed Burke and Tom O'Gorman did their homework and got it right.A must read for all police families.

Excellent.......2005-10-20
Line of Duty seemed to be right off the pages of a current newspaper. I think it is the very best in the Newpointe 911 series. It was so good that after a few pages I emailed Terri Blackstock and asked for another book to this series that she thinks is finished. I hope it will continue.
Terri Blackstock is a very gifted author. Her characters could be the people next door or down the street.
Great Book.......2005-03-22
I have read every book in the Newpointe 911 series, and I must say that Line of Duty is my favorite. I always loved Dan and Jill, and to see how they survive this tragedy. Once you pick up one of Terri Blackstock's books, it is hard to put it down. I have read all of the Newpointe series more than one time, but each time I read it, I get into it. Thanks for writing such a great book in a great series.
Excellent !.......2004-12-02
This book, and all of Terri Blackstock's book, are hard to put down once you start reading them. This book transformed me into the story and the lives of those involved. My husband was a firefighter so I understand the feelings she put through in this book. I highly recommend "Line of Duty."
Awesome storry.......2004-11-20
This was an awesome story line. I could not but it down and when I did, I couldn't wait to get back to it. I hope that Terri does not stop with this book. This series is so perfectly written and should not be stopped.
Good book, but not her best.......2004-11-10
This is another good book from Terri. However, there were a few times I wanted to put it down and not pick it back up. I was disappointed that we followed Dan and Jill again, rather then a new couple or a character who didn't develope much in previous books. I would say that is the biggest problem with this book, everything else is great. I won't go into details, because I see that so many of these reviews have already done a great job with that. The first few chapters were hard to get through, but after the building came down I had to find out what happened to Dan and the rest of the fireman from Newpointe who were lost/trapped in the rubble. Do they make it out alive? Do they ever find them in that mess? It's an exciting book, you should read it.

Gotham City From a Fresh Perspective.......2006-04-25
In Gotham, Batman is a dominating presence hanging over the criminal underworld. In Gotham Central: In the Line of Duty, we can see how he also overshadows the people involved in everyday law enforcement. In all the Batman comics, TV shows, and films, the police have been relegated to latecomers who show up when Batman has solved the crime and tied up the bad guys, leaving the police scratching their heads.
The Gotham Central comic really is completely unique in that we can get into the minds and lives of some very tough, very good cops who care about the city and protecting the innocent as much as Batman does.
In the Line of Duty contains the first five issues of the comic. A tense, well-executed storyline balancing plot development and character development is a real treat. Readers are treated to the appearance of Batman arch-villian Mr. Freeze, and a brief glimpse of the Bat himself. The art is dark and gritty and perfectly matches the setting and story.
Gotham City Gloom.......2005-06-21
This book does not live up to the reviews others are giving it. Of course anything tied to Gotham City will feature Batman, but, in this case, only in cameo shots (perhaps the writers were too embarassed to feature him more). This is supposed to be a "behind the scenes" kind of effort wherein the "real" heroes of Gotham City are its dedicated police officers. I cannot honestly see any point in serving up these stories. They are really very poorly written for coming from Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka; actually pretty hackneyed which would give credence to one reviewer's saying it recalled the good old days - the language seems right out of an incredibly bad Mickey Spillane pulp novel. The whole Mr. Freeze arc starts off good, but fizzles out very badly. Maybe this was better at some point as the editing seems very choppy. The art was good, but the story should be the driving force and it lacks any real suspense or drama. Look elsewhere for better (way better) stories by these writers.
A fascinating graphic novel.......2005-04-12
Life isn't easy for Gotham City's finest; living is the shadow of the Dark Knight, and dealing with villains large and small. While investigating a kidnapping, Detective Marcus Driver sees his partner murdered right in front of him by Mister Freeze, and he is determined that these crimes won't be solved by Batman, but will be handled by good old-fashioned police work. But, there's more to this case than meets the eye. Tough times have a way of turning common people into heroes, and Detective Driver will need to be a hero before all of this is over.
I must say that I was quite pleasantly surprised by this graphic novel. Batman appears in the story, but he is a very minor character. Instead, this is the story of a group of regular police officers doing their duty, and fighting crime the way that they police must. The illustration work is done in a style that took me back to the Golden Age comics, giving the story something of a timelessness that I did not expect.
Overall, I found this to be a fascinating graphic novel, one with an interesting twist in the selection of heroes. I loved this book, and highly recommend it to you.
Can't Go Wrong with Gotham Central.......2004-05-19
Gotham Central is a great series that is unfortunately under-read. This volume collects the first five issues for a very reasonable price -- and is a great way to get into this series. In fact the collected TPB is almost a better and easier read than the single issues. This is an intelligent book and appeals to a wider audience than just Batman fans. If you enjoy Law & Order or any crime drama, you will enjoy this book. Even if you haven't picked up a comic since you were a kid -- pick this one up.
Hill Street Blues in Gotham City.......2004-05-13
With Batman lurking on the fringes, Gotham Central is a darker Hill Street Blues, focusing on the rough-edged men and women of the Gotham City Police Department Major Crimes Unit who resent Batman's presence while often coming face to face with members of his gallery of rogues. This collection of the first 5 issues of the series features a brutal appearance by Mister Freeze (nothing like the abomination played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) and the resolution of two seemingly unconnected cases without Batman's help.
Michael Lark's gritty and atmospheric art are a perfect complement to Brubaker and Rucka's taut plots and precise characters, making Gotham Central one of the most compelling comics currently being published.

exciting police procedural romance .......2005-06-14
In Oklahoma City, former cop forensic statement analysis expert Paige Carmichael provides a seminar on how to interpret documents and verbal and nonverbal language as clues to criminal behavior. However, she is also disturbed to learn that serial killer Dr. Edwin Isaac, who she busted, escaped; he is leaving messages for Paige.
The threat to Paige is taken seriously by local law enforcement and homicide detective Nate McCall is assigned to keep her safe. As she provides instruction, Paige hears a comment from one of her students that raises her alert level. However, she knows from experience no one will believe her. At the same she is attracted to Nate who does not hide his feelings that she is a charlatan although he desperately desires her. Soon he will learn how accurate she is in "reading" words when he has to keep her safe from Isaac and his peer who want her dead.
This is an exciting police procedural romance with the emphasis on the action. Paige's skill, especially with forensic communication, will intrigue the audience as it is cleverly interwoven in the plot to include the heroine having problems interpreting the confusing signals from Nate who wants her but scorns her expertise as voodoo magic. The story line is filled with suspense, but having two antagonists sometimes makes it difficult to follow who is doing what to whom. Still this is a terrific bombshell with a fabulous lead couple more than worth the price.

Very Different Romance...Military Suspense/Action/Drama.......2003-08-13
This one had me guessing and sometimes wondering about the 'good guys' in the story. Nothing is as it seems, as in real life and Ms. Lovelace hit it on the nose in this tale about military coverup, power, secrets and steamy romance.
I was impressed with her military know-how seeing she served 23 years in the Air Force as an officer made the story that much more realistic. This one reminded me of a John Grisham novel with steamy romance added to the mix.
She's a sexy and beautiful Lt. Colonel who commands the 552 Air Control Wing out of Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahama. Brenna Duggan is a career officer and her record is as clean as a whistle. She does everything by the book and is highly respected throughout the ranks. So what could shake her judgement in the military? The night her phone rings and she gets a strange call about an airman in her squadron who was found dead in a Panama bar, but was not in the line of duty.
She begins having serious doubts about the death; too many questions about why the handsome and cocky ex-military pilot Dave Sanderson is linked to the death.
Bringing up too many unanswered questions, she is ordered to drop it, but she is even further baffled when she senses the military is trying to cover something up. Putting her entire career on the line, Brenna steps into the dangerous limelight digging for clues. Everything becomes awash in gray in her once black and white world.
Nothing makes sense. Nothing adds up.
Her dangerous attraction to the loose cannon pilot that seems in deep in this mess is not helping matters. She could lose her heart, career and her life.
The suspense keeps you going throughout the book and was very accurate with details of military life(military brat here for 24 years-also military spouse for 6)I was truly impressed with this book and would recommend it to anyone looking for a suspensful read with some truly noteable romance(well done Ms. Lovelace, whew :) )

Not bad!.......2002-03-03
This was a first for me with this author. I was attracted to the military part of it. It's a decent story/mystery/romance. The heroine is a Lt. Colonel in the Air Force. Her devotion to duty and principle was a tribute to women in command. She gambles all for a guy who is not your typical military hero and lets her judgement and heart be her guide. She is not compromised. Nice read.
Page turning suspense!.......2000-04-15
When the call came to Lt. Colonel Brenna Duggan about a death in her command she never expected her life to spiral out of control. A mysterious death determined to be not in the line of duty. After determining the course of action to take, Brenna informs the family and closes the case. Or so she thought.
When the widow of the dead airman presses further to prove her husband died in the line of duty, Brenna helps the widow, never realizing she would put her own life in jeapordy.
Ex-military pilot Dave Sanderson is drawn to Brenna as he has been no other woman, but she is getting closer and closer to the truth. Truth he must cover up.
If you're a lover of military romantic suspense and intrigue, Line of Duty is for you. Merline Lovelace will keep the reader on the edge of their chair, turning the pages wanting more. Highly recommended
Not the usual formula romance!.......1998-07-29
In Line of Duty, Merline Lovelace, makes her characters real. Each person, from the heroine and hero to those with smaller roles, come to life. Brenna's conflict are those faced by people everyday. It is easy to place yourself in her shoes. The action, oh the action, jumps right at you. From the phone call in the dark of night until you turn the last page, the book sizzles. This is not the usual formula romance!
Book Description
On September 29, 1918, a regiment of volunteers from New York State, many of them rich boys from Manhattan, attacked the famed Hindenburg Line, one of the strongest defenseive systems ever devised. In the tradition of the Union Army's heroic assaults on Confederate entrenchments during the closing battles of the Civil War, the doughboys hurled themselves at the center of a desperate but still powerful army. At a frightful cost, they broke the enemy and, just as their Union forebears had done, helped bring a terrible war to a close. Interweaving extracts from letters, diaries, and previously published accounts, DUTY, HONOR, PRIVILEGE follows the patrician 7th New York Regiment from the spring of 1917 when war is declared, through its merger with the plebian 1st regiment from Upstate New York (forming the 107th), to training with the British in France aand the heroic attack on the Hindenburg Line. Finally, we witness their triumphant welcome-home parade, still believed to be the biggest parade in New York City history.

Very good.......2003-02-21
Being a native New Yorker and a lover of history I was pulled into this book. With few "unit histories" of the Great War, this one is a must for any serious reader. The unit, made up from the elite of NYC, and men of more humble backgrounds from upper NY, forged a unit while not heralded, most certainly worthy of this book. The story, while never quick moving, will be interesting for the serious reader. The unit saw serious action in breaching the Hindenburg line while attached to the British. Good for the serious student.
Duty, Honor, Privilege.......2002-03-06
A wonderful read. Well-documented and beautifully presented. It realistically evokes a time when honor fueled men to do their perceived duty without hesitation and with great patriotism.
The book via letters and diaries creates a true emotional atmosphere of World War I and those committed to serve. It would make a superb film!
A Stirring reaccounting of a moment in history.......2001-12-06
Not to be forgotten the men of L Regiment. Thank you Mr Harris for the insight to a time before I was born and frankly of a different type of men who had so much to give and so much to lose but honor and duty were so important to them all. This was a wonderful book and if you lived as I did in the Hudson River Valley the memories of all of this are so important to me.
Powerfully visual history ... a very good story.......2001-06-20
This book is well written, well researched and well titled. I devoured it in three sittings. While the First World War has been eclipsed by the Second World War for most Americans, this story captures a fascinating piece of America's earliest military history as a world power. I particularly enjoyed the vivid descriptions which the author used to recreate the past. The arduous conditions the men experienced in South Carolina, where they trained at a partially built national cantonment, are so well drawn it unfolds like a movie. Their surroundings in the U.S. and abroad are brought dramatically to life. The troopship's approach to the French sea coast and entry into Brest harbor, the march through the city and the French countryside complete with the smells of tree blossoms, the troop trains, the billets, etc. were all wonderful. The graphic descriptions of life in the training areas, the reserve areas, marching to the front, entering the trenches, enduring incessant bombardments, making nighttime forays into "No Man's Land" and fighting the big battles was gripping.
The author's diligent research makes this a good read and good history. This reader became convinced that what was known as the Silk Stocking Regiment was far more than spoiled rich boys playing war. When they entered the war they may have been naive, but they rose to the challenges they faced with great courage. Despite suffering terrible casualties they fought valiantly. Their parent unit, the 27th Division, did not fight with the main American forces, the A.E.F., in France. It was assigned to the British Expeditionary Forces (B.E.F.), ultimately under the command of an Australian General, but that did not dampen their fighting spirit.
These soldiers enjoyed broad public support of the people of New York, both upstate farmers ("apple knockers") and New York City socialites, because it blended men from both. The book goes to great length exploring the pedigrees of many of the men of the historic old New York 7th Regiment. It leaves no doubt that many of the men came from the highest class of American society. We are also introduced to some of the "apple knockers". The story proves to be a very interesting social history. The trials, accomplishments and valor left this reviewer feeling very proud of these American soldiers. That feeling of pride is tempered with sadness for the many lives of these fine men which were given so unselfishly.
