Great gift for Elvis fans.......2007-10-01
GRACELAND: AN INTERACTIVE POP-UP TOUR is a must-have for any Elvis fan. I bought one for a friend, and it was such a hit that several of her friends have purchased them also. The pop-ups are well done, and the book gives a lot of information about Elvis and Graceland. It makes a great birthday present and will be the hit of the party.
Well-done pop-up, awesome tribute, kitschtastic.......2007-09-21
I bought this for my mother, a huge Elvis fan, and she loves it. The pop-ups are very well done - lots of detail, and lots of little extra flaps and such to open. Each page features a different room - kitchen, jungle room, etc., and the book discusses the significance of each room in Elvis' life. In a slightly morbid twist, the last page is the grave of Elvis and his parents. Also included are a cardboard pair of Elvis' famous gold sunglasses that you can wear! This book far surpassed my expectations.
Fun.......2007-08-29
I gave this book as a gift and boy was it a huge hit. Great fun for everyone. If you have an Elvis fan in your circle you can not go wrong. Great detail and package. Highly recommended

I live in Memphis.......2007-05-12
Since I live in Memphis, I am of course an Elvis authority (not.) My father-in-law created the Christmas scene to Elvis' specifications years ago. I hoped that Christmas would be included. Eveyone I have shared this book with has bought one. I plan to use it for gifts. You don't have to be a fan to appreciate the accuracy and "fun" of visiting the King's house.
Book Description
"Elvis fans the world over constantly dream about what their fantasy would have been if they had been lucky enough to have known him. Imagine having been Linda Thompson's best girlfriend and being with her the night she met Elvis. Then imagine becoming Elvis' friend, being kissed by him, working for him, and the ultimate dream: having sleepovers at Graceland with Linda (actually sleeping in his bed) while Elvis was away, traveling with Elvis and Linda on concert dates, and taking pictures of the upstairs area at Graceland. This book tells the story of how it all began and gives you a look at the incredible (some never-before-seen) pictures."

Elvis, Linda and Me.......2007-06-05
The contents of the book itself are very good. Book flows easily and I actually read the book in one day. It is overpriced but I bought mine, new, from an online auction site for 1/3 the price. The photos are nice but thought they could have been printed on better quality paper or in color if the originals were as such. This book is good for the Elvis fan who just wants to hear about only the positive things Elvis did in his life as she only just touches on the negative. Just wondering if Linda will write a book (everyone else has), though I would be very interested to read her accounts since she was alone with Elvis the most during that period.
Elvis, Linda and Me.......2007-05-15
One of the few Elvis books that is easy reading as well as entertaining for those of us who are often too busy to get into a complicated book, yet we want to read up on Elvis. It is also refreshingly positive (most of it)yet truthful. The author doesn't criticize & condem, just expresses an opinion & moves on. She does repeat herself throughout & some of the people mentioned in the book are not portrayed as being too bright; otherwise, it is a pretty good book.
Elvis Linda and Me.......2007-04-10
This book is good but not as good as Inside Graceland.
Jeanne tells us all about life with her best friend Linda and Elvis.
She tells a story of when Elvis was talking about his mother and yelled out momma and all the lights in graceland went out for a few seconds.
Then they came back on as he went on talking about his mother and yelled out momma again the lights went off again for a few more seconds I thought that was really strange but interesting. I thought Linda had left Elvis because of all the drugs Jeanne tells us that was part of it but also that Elvis was cheating on her with many women and also getting pretty serious with Ginger his last girlfriend. If you are an Elvis fan and have a collection of Elvis books then you should add this one to your set it is pretty good.
Elvis, Linda and Me: Unseen Pictures and untold stories from Graceland.......2007-04-10
This is a great book. There were times I would find myself laughing and times I would almost be in tears. It showed a side of Elvis no one got to see except those who were close to him. It has some great pictures of Elvis and Lisa Marie and some of his famous bedroom. Jeanne Lemay Dumas told about her life, the ups and downs, with the King of Rock and Roll. This is a must for any Elvis fan.
OVER PRICED.......2007-04-07
The book is great --- the price is about double what it should be.
Book Description
If you wanted a picture of the life of Elvis Presley, who better to paint it for you than someone who worked as his trusted cook and maid at Graceland? Someone whose daily tasks centered around keeping the 'King of Rock & Roll' happy, whose every move was designed to please the greatest music legend the entertainment world has ever known. Here is that picture, as painted by Nancy Rooks. Nancy worked for Elvis from 1967 until his untimely death in 1977. Read her stories of what those years were like, of what the routines were at Graceland, and what it meant to be close to Elvis and his family on a daily basis. Read the sad account of her rushing upstairs, after a frantic call from Ginger Alden, and finding him on the bathroom floor. This book presents that picture, one that every Elvis fan will want to see.

A Truly Wonderful Book.......2007-08-18
This book is the best book I have ever read about the life of Elvis Presley, and I have read many Elvis books. This is the most charming and real book of them all. You get the true feeling of life at Graceland during the time that it was a very busy household. Nancy tells of "Dodger" and Aunt Delta, and Vernon as well, and brings you into the home as no other book has done. Nancy writes simply, and clearly, and makes you wish you not only knew Elvis, but that you knew her, as well. Elvis was lucky to have Nancy in his employ for so long. And we are lucky to have her book to tell us about it.
Rosebud's Commentary.......2007-01-05
The book was an easy read. Had many grammar errors, yet the reader was able to connect to the emotions of the writer/story teller's feelings. The maids comments do not match up with a lot of what others have said about Elvis's drug usage or behavior in various arrays of good and bad. Then there is the question that for Pricillia and Elvis to be in love, why would a woman in love tell the maid she did not plan on producing more children with her true love? A lot of questions, yet, Elvis's personal life left a lot of questions for the fans and family alike. Good read over all, interesting as I collect various family and friends manuscripts to view and review the life and time of an American icon.
One of the best books to read about Elvis.......2006-12-28
This is a very well written and excellent book to read. Nancy goes in to full detail about her time at Graceland including some things I have never heard of before. This is a must buy for any Elvis fan!
A short, yet genuine story........2006-08-21
A memorable read from Nancy Rooks. Her recollections of going to work each day at Graceland are priceless. I only wish the book had shared more of her memories.
Great Book-Nancy A True Friend.......2006-05-01
This is one of the best books I have ever read about Elvis, and I have read a lot of them. Nancy was not only Elvis' maid, but also a true friend. It is so refreshing to read the good things about Elvis. Thank you Nancy for such a great book.
Book Description
"A richly detailed, poignant, and utterly fascinating look into another culture and how it is cross-pollinated by our own. It brings to mind the work of Ha Jin in its power and revelation of the new."--T. Coraghessan BoyleThe sprawling, swampy, cacophonous city of Lagos, Nigeria, provides the backdrop to the story of Elvis, a teenage Elvis impersonator hoping to make his way out of the ghetto. Nuanced, lyrical, and pitch perfect, this is a remarkable story of a son and his father, and an examination of postcolonial Nigeria, where the trappings of American culture reign supreme.
Customer Reviews:
Coming of age in Nigeria.......2007-07-07
This is a powerful coming-of-age novel, spanning the life of Elvis Oke from age 5 to age 16. Elvis is an Igbo boy from Akikpo, Nigeria who moves with his father to Lagos in 1981 after his father's bankruptcy and his mother's death from cancer. Nigeria is in turmoil after the tragedy of the Biafran war and a series of brutal dictators. Elvis lives in the slums reading Rilke and dreaming of becoming a dancer (he's already a creditable Elvis Presley impersonator). The distance Elvis travels to become a man is far greater than the 800 miles between Akikpo and Lagos: it's the distance between his largely traditional culture with its rhythms of the soil and the rain and the urban ghetto lifestyle he confronts in Lagos.
Lagos has everything and nothing for Elvis. He watches his father disappear into alcoholism. He is ignored and even starved by his father's live-in lover. He tries legal and illegal employment. But above all we see the chaos that is Lagos under one dictatorship after another. The police brutalize the citizenry. The government bulldozes the slums, crushing all underfoot. There is even a frightful trade in human organs. And through it all there is music: African music, western music, eastern music, Hound Dog.
How can a sensitive 16-year old find his way amid all this disorder? Where can he find guidance? Despite the harsh realities Elvis faces this book gives us a gentle, even poetic, portrait of a sensitive young man in an intolerable situation. I found it deeply moving and highly readable. Highly recommended.
A Master Storyteller - A Masterful Rendering.......2007-04-14
Chris Abani ranks right up there with Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka in my book. He peels away the glossy shell of life and dives right into the soft underbelly where life and death compete side by side.
Graceland took my breath away with its vivid rendering of Lagos and Nigeria, it's compassionate protagonist, and its heartfelt stuggle to do more than merely survive. Abani writes with such passion and insight that I was easily swept away with every sentence.
I used to work in Nigeria, and it all came rushing back to me with this book - the sights, the sounds, the smells, the pace . . . it's all there. Raucous music mingling with car horns. Burning tires overpowering the barbeque chicken. Palm wine and beer. Overfilled jitneys. Waterlogged slums. Bar Beach Market.
I have read this book twice already and am still not tired of it. In addition, I've read his poetry in "Daphne's Lot" and "Kalakuta Republic" and found them to be as melodic and memorable as "Graceland."
I definitely recommend that you buy and read this book. It will earn a place in your heart and your top ten fiction list.
Great Book.......2007-03-21
Graceland was an amazingly dark story of what is going on in urban Africa. Book I was brilliant and the characters were unforgettable. The story moves back and forth between urban Lagos and a small village where Elvis and his family spent his childhood. This was a really effective way of showing the drastic difference between the two cultures. Elvis loses his mother and his father becomes more of an alcoholic and loses his way, but this book is all about redemption and his father is only one example.
Book I and Book II are very descriptive and sexual, but Book II is much more graphic. Some of the scenes are incredibly graphic and sickening, but Abani's diction and style are so poetically charged that you cannot help reading in wonder and fear at the same time.
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I absolutely loved it.
A truly gifted writer.......2007-02-28
Chris Abani has written an amazing novel that you won't soon forget. It's gritty and raw, indeed. This novel will reach deep inside of you and won't let you go until long after you've read the last page. I will surely read it again and I would love to see it made into a movie.
One of the greatest books ever.......2007-02-10
I have read this book numerous times Abani gives readers a thrilling chilling heart wrenching suspense with a reality check that touches the heart. I felt like I have been to Nigeria with all the vivid details of th landscape. Abani is destined to become one of the greatest writers of our time.

Elvis Fashion: From Memphis to Vegas.......2005-01-27
An absolutely wonderful book! What a treat to be taken into the archives at Elvis Presley Enterprises and be able to see up-close some of the clothing worn by the King of Rock and Roll. Being able to put the clothing with the time and place he wore it is a history lesson. Julie Mundy is a serious Elvis fan who gives the rest of us fans a peek into something we can only dream about.
Much more than a photo book.......2004-04-17
The basic concept of this book is what basically makes it great. Old photos of Elvis in all kinds of different outfits, both for the stage and from his personal wardrobe, are paired with the brand new photos of the same clothes now kept in the Graceland archives.
As simple as that, but it works. The new photos are truly great and together with the high class layout, it makes it a really quality investment - a coffee table book in the best sense of the word. The accompanying text by Julie Mundy is informative and well-written. No need to wonder who made what clothes, when, what the cost was at the time, and when Elvis wore it - all the information is right here. I personally really enjoyed the parts about the people who designed for Elvis, in particular the interview bits with Bill Belew who amongst other things did Elvis' famous jumpsuits.
The book is also a look back through history. It reminds you that Elvis dared to have a fashion style uniquely his own way before fashion dictated that everyone should have their own individual style. The book is a beautiful and interesting document of Elvis' transformation - and the development in fashion as Elvis interpretated it - over his 20 years career and definitely a good buy!
Expensive, but well worth it!.......2004-01-15
Wow -- I love this book!!!!!! Having extensively researched Elvis's wardrobe for my book The Girls' Guide to Elvis: The Clothes, the Hair, the Women, and More!, I am familiar with a great deal of Elvis's clothing -- this book is filled with things I've never seen before! What amazing access to Elvis's closet!! If you're fascinated by Elvis's personal style (and who isn't?!), you'll want to own this beautiful coffee table book. Well, well worth the price!
Thrilling New Photos of all things ELVIS!.......2004-01-14
Great work and collaboration from Graceland executives made this book possible. Julie Mundy brings us closer than ever to many of Elvis's clothes and wardrobes. All photos are well described, professional, and exciting!
This book also shows us some of Wurthmeiers photos that are stunning!
Great coffee table material and Conversation Starter
Would have been a great pleasure to author this book!
Long live the King!

Book Description
A Manual of Spiritual Teaching and Discipline. THE IMPERSONAL LIFE is the book that Elvis "had been looking for all his life." Why? Because as ALL Elvis biographers tell us, it spoke to him in such a clear understanding voice. It was so dear to Elvis that he began sharing it with the world by giving copies away by the case. It was ground zero for his self-explorationa and spiritual awareness. Here, Elvis found food for his soul, and he devoured it. We aptly call this the Graceland Edition of The Impersonal life "The Little Book in which Elvis Found the Light." Students of spirituality continue to find it so.
Customer Reviews:
A diamond of a little book (will move YOU like Elvis!).......2002-06-11
The Impersonal Life is being marketed by DeVorss & Co as "the Little Book in Which Elvis found the light." And for good reasons: it's a sound marketing move, it gets more people to read it....and this potent little book will truly help you find the (inner/spiritual) light if you are even slightly seeking it.
This book has little to do with Elvis, except that he loved it second only to the Bible, handed out hundreds of copies to friends...and it enlightened and inspired him. The Impersonal Life was written in the early twentieth century by the enigmantic Joseph S. Brenner, who wrote and published it under the pen name ANONYMOUS.
So what is it? Firstly, it is definitely a little but very profound book. DeVorss' special Graceland-authorized edition (with a young and thin Elvis on the cover) is tiny enough to carry in your pants or jacket pocket, purse, carry on luggage etc.
Secondly, it's basically an early 20th century version of Conversations With God, although it does not venture near some of the controversial areas that the later (and I think inferior) volumes of that contemporary book did.
The Impersonal Life is also seems like a first-person work(the author speaking as that spark of divinity he contends is within all of us) that could have been written by the great Ernest Holmes, author of the landmark Science of Mind writings. Its core idea is that your mind is linked to a Higher Power so a "Thinker is a Creator...(who) lives in a world of his own conscious creation."
Brenner, writing as the voice of God and appealing and explaining to each reader's own divine spark, writes that "every thing, every condition, every event that ever transpired was first an idea in the mind. It was by desiring, by thinking, and by speaking forth the Word, that these ideas came into visible manifestation."
Why did Elvis care and be influenced by The Impersonal Life -- and why should YOU? This little book, with each of its words as potent as literary dynamite blasting away earthly mental clutter and worries, stresses the importance of belief and nonshakeable FAITH...and argues that inspiration and intuitive flashes just don't happen. There's a reason. And if you follow these impersonal flashes you can live an impersonal life....uplifted from the personal human concerns and preoccupations, better focused on spiritual concerns and increasingly empowered with increasingly documentable spiritual power.
The words that comforted Elvis & ME!.......2002-02-12
This is the Elvis that few people have ever seen or known about--the Spiritual side. I truely enjoyed reading the SAME words that comforted Elvis in his times of need. The words contained with in this small, but powerful little book spoke out to me as if IT was written just for me. This must have been how Elvis felt while reading it too. This book is like an instruction manual directly from God, speaking from within. I will keep this book and read it many times as a reminder of the power of God, which is found within. It makes a great gift for those who are interested in the spirual side of Elvis, but most importantly for those who want to discover more of the spiritual side of themselves.
The book that caused Elvis to hear his call.......2001-08-02
Of course I knew about Elvis but I hadn't read much about him. I wouldn't call myself an "Elvis Fan." Then I happened to get a chance to visit Graceland one day and after that visit, I knew that Elvis answered his life's call and was compelled by Spirit to be the legend that he was. So what would influence Elvis to become so great?
The answer is in this book. The book is not about Elvis. It has a little introduction about how Elvis used this book. "The Impersonal Life" was actually first published anonymously in 1916. The author has been discovered but little is known about the author. Elvis bought this book by the case and gave it out freely to friends and acquaintences. He read this book over and over and over, underlining and putting notes in the margins. He absorbed the meaning of the book and you know that is true after you read it.
The book's content is very spiritually fulfilling. It does not include religous language, symbolism or dogma but it is very spiritual. "I AM" is speaking to the reader. On page 122 it reads "I may be expressing through you beautiful symphonies of sound, color or language, that manifest as music, art or poetry, according to mortal terminology, and which so affects others as to cause them to acclaim you as one of the great ones of the day."
Does that not say what Elvis was about? This book contains the words that caused Elvis to hear and understand his call. The book is small and very easy to read. It is rich with Spirit speaking and it compels you to live out your life answering your call, whatever that may be. Wow! I am glad I discovered this book. I, too, will read it over many times. It's definitely worth more than its weight in gold.

Good work.

Karal Ann Marling, a professor of art history and American studies at the University of Minnesota, examines Elvis Presley, the cultural phenomenon, through the places he lived. From his place of birth, the two-room "shot-gun house" in Tupelo, to the fabled hilltop mansion, Graceland, Marling shows that despite international acclaim he never lost his Mississippi roots. Elvis often shared Graceland with "the guys"--an entourage of relatives, assistants and school pals--"like a teenager whose parents weren't home" and was not above putting a bullet through the television when he saw something he didn't like. Marling argues that through conspicuous consumption, compulsive refurnishing of rooms and garish decor, Presley knew he was thumbing his nose at good taste and consciously cultivating his own legend.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but not for Elvis fans.......2006-03-21
The book generally present Elvis and his surroundings as seedy, degenerate. The 35 small, black and white illustrations, with their distorted dimensions, enhance this image.
I thought there might be a lot of information on Elvis's various homes. I was disappointed. The author wanders far afield of things Elvis. There is a significant amount of coverage on the homes of other celebrities, and there is an obsession with external columns. One chapter is devoted to William Faulkner. The final chapter describes the author's trip home from Memphis to her home in Minnesota.
I was surprised at the 12 pages devoted to "Sources". The book's text did not suggest extensive homework on Elvis, but the "Acknowledgments" give credit to four grad students for their assistance.
The page count breaks down as follow: Table of Contents - 2, text - 242 (including 16 chapters and an introduction), Sources -12, and Acknowledgments - 2.
The prose came across as meandering, often depressing, but eloquent blather, packaged under the Elvis name to sell copies. Perhaps writing in this matter purges the author of her own frustrations. Despite it's overall negativity, it was still interesting in its perspective.
A fascinating read, even for we non-fanatics........2002-05-29
My son brought this book home as part of a school project and I absentmindedly picked it up and started reading. It really hooked me from the start and I ended up reading it cover to cover in just a couple of days.
The author has a great way of meandering from subject to subject so that the book encompasses much more than just facts about Graceland. It studies how the houses that we live in represent where we have come from and where we are going, not just as individuals but as a culture and a country.
The book also looks honestly at Elvis Presley's life, without wallowing in the uglier aspects of his life and death.
Elvis and his homes........1998-01-11
Elvis was the unique product of a very specific time and place; a cultural expression of that sweaty, hardscrabble slice of Mississippi River Delta biracial culture which has produced so much of the authentic in American music.
The singer's unusual and deep attachment to his context is well understood in this perceptive biography, whose author views and interprets Presley through his homes, from the shotgun shack in East Tupelo to the "Peckerwood Palace" of Graceland. Highly readable and of value to students of contemporary American culture, but committed Elvis fans will not be comforted by this unblinking examination of the King and his world.

Graceland speak about Elvis..........1996-12-09
Truly great book on the myth of Elvis Presley and also
about the history of the past in the United States.
We can understand in a better way what Graceland truly mean
to Elvis...
A superficial time-line concerning his life is also a great
source of informations about the man behind the star...

Graceland and Asleep on the Wind.......2006-03-10
I thoroughly enjoyed Graceland. It is sweet and light hearted all at the same time. The characters are rich and well defined for a one act play.
Great play!
