Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Lost, Lonely Singles..........2007-09-24

I never write reviews on books unless they really moved me, and this one certainly did that. I did not want to put it down! So comforting and a real amazing read if you have just gotten out of a relationship or have been on you own for awhile. This book really puts things in perspective and makes you view your life in a whole different way. I couldn't help but feel like the author was like my mother or older sister of some sort giving me advice to really loving and appreciating the life that I have right in front of me. I have recommended it to all of my single girlfriends as abook of wisdom and guidance through all the hard times we have endured. I personally have had a hard time getting over the stigma of being single, thinking I will never be loved and if I am alone then I am nobody. Its hard to really look at the brighter side of things when all you see is happy couples hand-holding every where you look, but there are other amazing joys in life as well that you can do when you are forced to be alone.
I really, really loved this book. I cannot recommend it enough!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Every Single Struggling.......2007-09-12

I don't write reviews, but I have to write a review for this book. This book was awesome. I found myself single and alone for the first time in 9 years. I was scared, hopeless, and at a complete loss. This book really helped me get my thoughts in order. It helped me overcome the fear of being single. I truly am finding ways to love life, but more importantly love myself. I highly recommend this book. In fact, I am buying a copy for one of my friends that is the most negative person I know. I am hoping it will help her like it helped me.

5 out of 5 stars Pearls of Wisdom.......2007-08-01

Recently single, for the first time, I bought this book looking for something a little uplifting and encouraging; and that's what it is. There's lots of quotes to inspire, and "Try this" suggestion areas to keep you busy and on your way. Definately a must for people looking for a quick and productive read!

5 out of 5 stars Loved this book!!.......2007-01-11

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Not only is it a heartwarming, motivational tool, but it is also an easy read. I couldn't put it down. It made me laugh and smile and be thankful for the single experience.

4 out of 5 stars Friendly, Informative and Not Preachy!!!.......2005-07-07

This book is like listening to a wise, loving friend. It isn't preachy and Judy Ford is in touch with several generations, and both genders. I would compare her book to a big box of chocolates with a lot of variety! (I bet she'd like that!)
There were times when I found the book a bit silly, though. Some of the suggestions are a bit much, for me. However, I took it as a hint to "think out of the box."
Ford's neatly arranged "Try This" sections at the end of each chapter make referencing the book easy. Overall, I found the tone of this text hopeful and romantic.

4 out of 5 stars Sheep and Poetry.......2007-04-20

Brad Leithauser, in his well-penned Introduction to my copy of this novel, writes that when asked what his favourite book (this one) is about, he replies, "Sheep." - Very droll, but also accurate to a surprising degree - Leithauser, of course, goes on to expand in the Introduction. The reviewers here have done an excellent job of mapping the novel out and covering its themes, so that there seems little for me to add. I will say that this book is unlike anything else you'll ever read, save for the concluding pages, which bring to mind The Grapes of Wrath or some of Jack London's lesser read books such as The Iron Heel. This is a deeply poetic book about sheep and a particular man's, Bjartur's, struggle to be independent by means of them. What exactly this "independence" entails is material for a doctoral thesis. I think I'll just let Laxness do the talking here:

"Forenoon, noon, and afternoon are as far off as the countries we hope to see when we grow up; evening as remote and unreal as death..." p.139

"Few things are so inconstant, so unstable, as a loving heart, and yet it is the only place in the world where one can find sympathy." P.147

"...there is much comfort in the thought that time effaces everything, crime and sorrow no less than love." P.226

"...two human beings have such trouble in understanding each other, there is nothing so tragical as two human beings." P.301

"In its own way misery no less than revelry is varied in form and worthy of note wherever there lurks a spark of life in the world," p.303

These are just a few of the gems in this singular tale. Only four stars, because, well, aside from a few shining poetic passages of hopefulness (quickly crushed) the world portrayed here is mind-numbingly (for this reader anyway) bleak. And a reader cannot live on bleakness alone.

4 out of 5 stars Great Icelandic novel, needs a better translation.......2007-02-19

This is a great novel. The story is engrossing and the characters are convincingly human. However, I would recommend that the reader find out something about Iceland before tackling it. It is very helpful to have a feel for the Icelandic landscape and a little bit of knowledge of the country's history before picking up this book. It also helps to read a few of the Icelandic sagas first. "Egil's Saga", "The Burning of Njal", and/or "Hrafnkel's Saga" would be good ones to read. They are readily available in English translation.
If I hadn't read several of the sagas first, and found out a bit about Iceland, I would miss a lot of what Laxness is talking about in this novel.
The book needs a better translation. The translator's use of archaic and uncommon English words is distracting. For example, the word "bigging" is used on the first few pages to denote the ruins in the valley. Merriam-Webster dictionary defines this as an "archaic" word meaning "building." It comes from the Old Norse and is close to a Modern Icelandic word meaning 'settlement, habitation'. Maybe the translator chose 'bigging' because it was close to Laxness' original Icelandic word. He also uses 'ling' instead of the far more common word 'heather'. 'Ling' is another word from Old Norse which is probably close to Laxness' original Icelandic, but most English readers won't understand it. Bad choice for the translation.
There is a man called "the Fell King" (Most English readers wouldn't know that Fell = mountain. I wonder why the translator didn't call him "the Mountain King".)
There are probably many other significances to the names of people and places which I never caught on to. Some of these could be relayed to the reader by the translator.
The book needs a fresh English translation to make it more accessible to the average reader.

5 out of 5 stars An Independent Man, Forever in Shackles.......2006-08-28

In 1954, the Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to one Ernest Hemingway; his successor the year following was a considerably lesser known Icelander named Halldor Laxness. Yet Papa Hemingway would no doubt have felt both admiration and kinship with Laxness's stubbornly comical, almost tragic hero Gudbjartur Jonsson, in INDEPENDENT PEOPLE. Bjartur, as he is called, is undoubtedly one of literature's great single-minded characters, a Don Quixote of Iceland's punishing sheep country, a Candide devoted to the seemingly simple concept of personal independence. Unlike Sartre's spineless seeker of freedom, Matthieu Delarue (THE AGE OF REASON), however, Bjartur has both guiding principles and a backbone, although probably too much of both.

The plot lines are surprisingly minimal for a book of nearly 500 dense pages. After eighteen years of working as a sheep-herder for the local (and wealthy) Bailiff, Bjartur scrapes up enough money to purchase a scrabbly piece of boggy land and a few sheep from his former employer. The land is rumored to be cursed, but Bjartur disdains these superstitions and resolutely forges ahead, optimistically naming his homestead Summerhouses. Refusing to assume debt or even ask for help in order to preserve his cherished independence, Bjartur of Summerhouses builds a sod house (the sheep live downstairs, the humans upstairs), slowly expands his flock through birthing, and marries a woman (Rosa) who dies alone in childbirth; Bjartur is out in a violent snowstorm searching for a sheep that he doesn't know his dead wife had cooked and eaten. The infant (named Asta Sollilja - Beloved Sun-Lily) only survives thanks to the body warmth of Bjartur's dog. Later, Bjartur marries again and fathers three boys (Helgi, Gvendur, and Nonni), as well as several stillborn children. His second wife dies, but Bjartur and his children eke out an existence that suddenly improves with the increase in price in Icelandic wool during World War I. Of course, this newfound wealth brings its own set of curses, luring Bjartur and his farming colleagues into building new, more modern houses. The intrusion of worldly affairs into Summerhouses also threatens the solidarity of Bjartur's family and results in breakup and tragedy, but also in a certain degree of good fortune. By the end of the story, Bjartur and his much-reduced family and flock are forced to set out for new land even further into the rugged north, recalling nothing so much as the ending of Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN.

Plot and story is not really what INDEPENDENT PEOPLE is about. Laxness has penned a great satire of Icelandic mores and customs, turning Bjartur into the sort of close-minded, impossibly stubborn farmer who, the more he strives for independence, the greater and tighter are the shackles that bind him. Bjartur is surrounded by a colorful group of supporting characters, from the equally stubborn Asta and romantic Nonni to the other sheep farmers, the odd and slovenly Bailiff Jon, the politically ambitious Ingolfur Arnarson Jonsson (the Bailiff's son), the old grandmother Hallbera, and perhaps best of all, the Bailiff's wife, the Mistress of Rauthsmyri. The Madam Myri is a satirical triumph, an incessant worshipper of the noble peasants and their lifestyle while she lives in magnificent comfort and even complains of the burdens and unhappiness of being rich.

Nearly everything is the subject of satire in INDEPENDENT PEOPLE. World War I becomes an insane exercise to kill ten million people over some guy named Ferdinand. The economics of socialization (rural cooperatives) versus capitalism (the merchants) becomes nothing more than the replacement of one set of heartless thieves bleeding the farmers with another set, both sets caring only about money and little about the farmers' lives. Modernization in the form of roads and bridges become just another way to help the rich get richer and to distract the young with dreams of the big cities and foreign lands. Even America is satirized as the distant land of impossible dreams, so that the word America becomes a pejorative for the young who leave their families to discover their own America. Of all these symbols, however, America appears to be the one with a positive side - youngest son Nonni leaves for America because he has been prophesied to be a great singer, one who will sing a song for the whole world to hear. We see little of Nonni after he leaves Summerhouses, but we can guess that he perhaps represents Laxness himself.

INDEPENDENT PEOPLE is rich in its sense of place, drawing unforgettable pictures of the northern Icelandic sheep-farming countryside. Laxness's depictions of Nature are captivating, and his tales of struggle against the elements make the reader feel a part of the fight for existence. One scene, in which Bjartur nearly dies attempting to capture an elk during a snowstorm, is truly memorable. For all that, however, Laxness writes in a style that many readers will find slow and dense, reminiscent of authors like Thomas Hardy, George Elliot, or Charles Dickens. First published in 1945, this book shows its old-world, European novel roots. Nevertheless, patient readers will be amply rewarded; those expecting Grisham-style pacing will doubtless be unwilling to persevere. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves classical literature, looks for novels with a serious message and point of view, or simply wants to meet and savor a memorable story with classical pacing and an unforgettable cast of magnificently-drawn characters.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting. Perfect........2006-03-26

Halldor Laxness won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955 mainly for this incredibly odd book about a sheepfarmer living in contempt of the world around him on a lonely croft. Bjarter of Summerhouses is very much an anti-hero; he treats his dog better than his wife and is obtuse in his pigheadedness. The book is mainly about how misfortune continually punishes someone you don't really care about, so why it works so well as a complete masterpiece of poetry and emotion is a mystery to me. It is a little slow in getting into at first, but the strength of Laxness' prose and characterization quickly gets to you. Bjartur's life is surrounded with people who are filled with love, and the irony in contrast with him is fascinating to notice. Classic topics such as pride and strength are explored ad nauseum, but every now and then we meet the supernatural, the beauty of nature and free thought, poetry and art and grace and an other-level comprehension of ordinary life that Laxness writes with astonishing beauty (if you read it, you'll know what I'm talking about). Life is not a parade for Bjartur, but he always maintains his dignity, and eventually it shows him how to live a life of humility and love. The journey to get there is a wonder to experience.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent cohousing resource.......2007-01-11

If you are considering alternatives to aging in isolation or retiring to a gated golf course community, read this book. Senior cohousing is becoming the fastest growing segment of the intentional community movement. This book offers both how-to advice and the social rationale for aging in community.

5 out of 5 stars Senior Cohousing Offers Exciting Possibilities for a Growing Demographic.......2006-02-07

Charles Durrett's Senior Cohousing book will help lead us into the next 17 years as an estimated 75 million Baby Boomers head into retirement. It only makes sense that the generation that brought social and environmental awareness to the fore would be searching for a sustainable, suportive, self-managed community housing solution for their later years, and Durrett has outlined in detail how - and why - to go about it.

The stories and wisdom are from Denmark, where multigenerational cohousing began over 30 years ago. Since that time, cohousing has translated very successfully to over a dozen countries around the world, including over 90 completed neighborhoods in North America alone. With 20 out of the last 25 cohousing starts in Denmark being senior projects, we can only assume that Senior Cohousing on the rest of the planet will be as big - if not bigger - a hit.

Durrett has given us clear and useful intruction in Senior Cohousing for how to go about creating a Senior Cohousing neighborhood, from gathering other interested parties to finding land, hiring the design and development professionals and building a cohesive community. The step-by-step chapters are interlaced with impotant and interesting sidebars, illustrations and photographs.

The spirit of the book is both informative and fun. The candid photos, quotes and anecdotes drive home the glee with which these Elders are taking charge of their lives. Neighbors work and play together, share frequent meals, dance, bicycle, walk, and create poetry and art. After reading Senior Cohousing, for probably the first time in my life, I thought getting older might actually be a hoot.

4 out of 5 stars Elders Getting Together to Take Charge of Their Future.......2005-10-05

At last, here is a guidebook to a new way of aging for older Americans - a housing solution that at once addresses the need for privacy and for community; provides a net of security and mutual care without the institutional restrictions of assisted living; is environmentally friendly - and most importantly, is planned, designed, and built by the residents themselves.

Cohousing got its start in Europe and has been successfully translated to America. In a cohousing community, each household has its own, stand-alone private dwelling, which is smaller than the traditional single-family home. These private homes are clustered around a common house which provides the amenities that are often wastefully duplicated in traditional American housing. The layout of the homes and the entire community provides plenty of privacy while affording opportunities for as much social interaction as the residents desire.

The key to cohousing is that it is planned and built by the people who intend to live there, so the sense of community begins to develop during the planning process as interested participants winnow themselves down to a core group that is committed to building together, on a site they have chosen together, with a development program that they have evolved together through a consensus process.

Senior cohousing is the logical extension of the cohousing idea. Many senior cohousing communities already exist in Denmark, where the author, Charles Durrett, traveled extensively and interviewed community residents. In the United States Durrett and his wife, Katie McCamant, are the principals of The Cohousing Company, an architectural firm that specializes in facilitating the development of cohousing. Their previous book, Cohousing: A Contemporary Way of Housing Ourselves, pioneered the cohousing movement in America.

Senior CoHousing is an inspiring and practical guidebook to help older Americans get started organizing and planning a cohousing community. It draws upon the author's extensive experience in developing cohousing in the United States, and the shared experience of elders in Denmark who have been living in senior cohousing communities for years. Filled with inspiring photographs and helpful graphics, the book presents the nuts-and-bolts considerations that go into planning a senior cohousing community. For many Americans over 50, this book may be the first step toward creating a way of living out the final stages of life in a rewarding, stimulating, supportive environment, where one's choices find expression in a neighborhood of like-minded people.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and goofy.......2007-02-22

Some are more realistic than others, but all are entertaining. I'll certainly allow this book when I start my own nation off the coast of Africa.

4 out of 5 stars Need Something Amusing to Read?.......2006-03-22

I've found Don't Try This At Home to be lighthearted and fun. It's also impractical and seems to be based largely on complete fantasy. What is it about you ask? Think of it as a 264 page Do-It-Yourself guide for the armchair adventurer.

Megalomaniacs will want to skip right to "Form an Independent Nation". In just 8 short pages, Fulghum describes the steps you'd need to complete. Like most of the items in the book, Forming an Independent Nation does have a large number of prerequisites. For example you will need "hard currency", especially if you choose to acquire your nation through peaceful means. Well no worries, just check out Fulghum's section on stealing gold from Fort Knox.

Thrill seekers, there's plenty of material here for you too. Good starting points are "Fly Through the Eye of a Hurricane" or "Guide and Surface a Nuclear Sub through Ice". My personal favorite is "Drive a Tank through a Tornado". Fulghum says the tank is "available from the US Army, contact the Pentagon to arrange purchase or lease". Does anyone have a phone number?

4 out of 5 stars This stuff might work!.......2005-10-18

So help me, a lot of this stuff might actually work... Of course most of their ideas would take more time, money and resources than i'll ever have, but they're fun to think about!

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know about things you don't need to know.......2004-05-12

Imagine calling Fort Knox and asking the best way to break in and steal the gold. Don't have the guts for it? Don't worry, because Hunter Fulghum has done it for you. He has contacted everyone from the U.S. Dept. of Energy to his local alien experts to find out how you would do everything from Swim the English Channel to Borrow the Mona Lisa to Start an Independant Nation.

Aside from being funny and quite interesting, the book is very well written; I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Good book.......2004-03-18

Great fun to read, though some of it is a bit obvious... By the way I am starting an independant nation, got this book because I figured I might as well. I was already planning on starting it before I got the book. Getting an island from Nicaragua to make it. Anyways good book. Get it.

2 out of 5 stars Over promise. Under deliver. Far from a compleat trading book.......2006-08-29

This is the second book I read of the author. I have a very high opinion on his "Rules of the trade". The headline under the book title, "How to make a living as an indpendent, stock, options or futures trader", did lead me to expect something of the quality of "Trading for a living by Alexander Elder". I had been very disappointed. Apparently the author's strength is on trading psychology, not technical/fundamental analysis. His so called foundational analysis is nothing more than a marketing name with weak TA and FA substance. All the worse, the chapters seem quite disorganised and badly written. Somehow I wonder whether this book was simply published to promote his website. Considering the ocean of better alternatives in the market including the author's previous book I mentioned above, I strongly suggest you to give this a pass.

    Book Description

An indispensable guide to the special challenges faced by parents of learning-disabled children as they enter adulthood, by the author of Laughing Allegra, a leading activist and parent of an adult child with LD.

In 2003 Anne Ford (great-granddaughter of Henry Ford) published Laughing Allegra, about the struggles of raising her learning-disabled daughter, and received a flood of letters from parents of children with LD, ADD, and ADHD, many expressing concerns about what to do as their children age.

On Their Own is an invaluable road map to ease these parents' fears and answer their questions, especially the one that haunts them daily: Will or can their child be on their own, and how? In a candid, sympathetic style, laced with real-life stories, the book covers such topics as:
    • Social skills and dating
    • Staying healthy
    • Sibling relationships
    • Interaction with employers and co-workers
    • Job hunting
    • Finding the right college or trade school
    • Estate planning

Also included are a comprehensive resource guide and exclusive interviews with prominent professionals who have surmounted their learning disabilities: CEO's Sir Richard Branson, John Chambers, David Neeleman, and Charles Schwab, and former governor Gaston Caperton.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not just another self help book........2007-05-08

I was worried that I would be bored by all the language specific jargon so commonly used by professionals in books like these, but the insight and personal account of dealing with learning disabled adults kept me totally engrossed for the entire book. I wish more books about dealing with disabilities were written with such a human voice.

5 out of 5 stars On Their Own by Anne Ford.......2007-05-08

This is the book every parent of an adult child with LD should read, especially in those times when you feel so hopeless and that no one truly knows what you are going through. As the parent of an adult son with learning disabilities I can honestly say that On Their Own has changed the way I think about my son and his future. Most of all it has given me hope that he has a future at all! The book helped us see the whole person with all their strengths and weaknesses. Nothing is sugar-coated here, and parents of adults with LD will find many points where'll they'll nod in agreement and realize that yes, after all someone truly does understand what we are going through. I absolutely loved Anne Ford's previous book Laughing Allegra. In that book, I felt she spoke to me personally as we followed her step by step while raising a child with LD. On Their Own continues the story, but it is a much more hands-on approach and with a great deal of practical information. Even so, I found it as readable as Laughing Allegra, with many insights and anecdotes that separate it from so many other dry academic books in this field. Parents of adult children with any disability will benefit greatly from On Their Own

5 out of 5 stars Read this book, and read the Okinawa Program.......2003-02-09

I'm in my early fifties, and I must say, the reality of being fit is not as easy as it once was. It will be again. All I have to learn is that I have to start out small, think tall, and gradually reach over the wall. This book shows you how to do that. Seniors lose their ability to get about, and that starts a long list of mobility related problems.
What used to be strength training for me, was curling 120 pounds. I will start agaain, with 5. Once my tendons, muscles, etc, grow accustomed to the movement, I will add 5 more, and so on.
If you have an aging parent, getting out of a chair gradually becomes an effort. So you start there. Help them to get out of the chair ten times in a row. Then walk them around the house for 12 or 15 minutes, on your arm if need be. Then let them rest. Two days later, do it again. Then gradually increase it. This book shows you how.
I spoke with a woman who had multiple Masters Degrees, and she donated her time at a local Senior center. She remarked that an 88 year old woman came into the center, unable to walk. They started to exercise her. Now she dances the Polka.
Seniors lose it, because they don't use it. Going from the couch to the kitchen, to the bathroom, is not sufficient exercise to build strength, stamina, and cardiovascular benefits.
Some seniors are active. Even they can benefit from this book. No matter what level they acheive, the same rules apply.
What is important is not to rush a program. That leads to overuse, and acute injuries. Inch by inch, anything is a cinch.
With an increase in exercise, comes an increase in appetite, which leads to an increase in the volume of essential nutrients. Success begets success.
See how the elder Okinawans do it, in the book "The Okinawan Program" Many are active tending gardens, and bicycling even after the age of 100. Dispel the myths.
Read "Staying Strong a Seniors Guide to a more Active and Independent Life" and visit your parents, or stay with them more. The will to live, and the will to thrive, comes from the inside, and the outside. Sometimes our ends are thrust on us, and sometimes it comes from simply running out of hope and energy.
Exercise is the single most beneficial health aid we have, and this book, will get you back on track.
I hope this review helps many to take the step. Beginning is half done.
