Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Another reviewer has said there was no mention of where to buy a soldering iron. Well, I emailed the author and promptly got one mailed to me. No problem. Definitely use with good ventilation and a respirator, especially if you are 'burning' plastic materials.I am enjoying experimenting with the process.Well written, clear instructions.

Know what you are getting into.......2006-10-31

The idea of fusing together synthetic fabrics by melting them with a soldering iron is a creative one. However, on opening the book, the reader is advised of the need for a respirator and an extractor fan to protect against toxic fumes. This is not to be taken lightly. A fire extinguisher might also be recommended.
For those who decide to forge ahead, it might also have been helpful to have more guidance included about what to search for in a soldering iron. It is not helpful to say that we do not want it "too hot" or "too cool".

I am very excited about trying projects found in this book. Margaret Beal gives clear instructions, but yet allows you to express your own creativity. I will be trying these techniques soon!

Opens your eyes to possiblities.......2006-07-05

Its amazing what I have seen done with Soldering Irons of late! I am impressed with these women - but especially Margaret Beal. She realized that it could be an "iron" of sorts. Its a lesson in what can be done to synthetics if we only remember how many we have burned with a normal iron. Ms. Beal has learned how to control that burn and with an even hotter utensil - the soldering iron. . I especially loved the "pillows".

I bought this book without seeing it first and am so glad I did not have to wait until the Quilt Show in Houston to find a copy to check out. Definitely I would buy a book by Ms. Beal sight unseen again!

This is a highly detailed study of the metallurgy of medieval and Renaissance armour. It reveals some surprising facts and challenges some commonly held beliefs. The level of accuracy and detail are unmatched in this book. It features hundreds of pieces of armour from collections all over the world.

A taut and gripping book.......2005-08-12

In this novel first published in 1990, Mr Coetzee gives the grim account of both a human being facing imminent death and a country - South Africa - still immersed in the tragedy of the apartheid regime. Mrs Curren, a professor of classics in Cape Town, has just received the fatal news from her doctor, Dr Syfert, that she suffers from an incurable form of cancer. Part of the narrative consists in an imaginary letter Mrs Curren will never write to her daughter who left for America in 1976. Indeed she does not consider it to be just to share her burden with her daughter but, as she puts it, "to resist the craving to share my death", "to take my leave without bitterness" and "to embrace death as my own, mine alone." But since it is nearly impossible for her to approach death without the support of another human being, she ends up sharing her thoughts and life with Mr Vercueil, a tramp she finds one morning sleeping in the garden of her house.
Death is omnipresent in Mr Coetzee's work, not only Mrs Curren's but in the townships of Cape Town where the lives of the coloureds are worth next to nothing and therefore death is as common as life for the people obliged to live there. A powerful, sad and unforgettable tale whose characters and events cut to the bone.

Important, but not his best work.......2005-06-05

As usual, we can trust Coetzee to deliver some brilliant insights on the human condition, most specifically as it related to South Africa during the last years of Apartheid. Here, however, I felt Coetzee's stiff, cold prose style and his inability to create rich and whole characters undermined the storytelling and left me wishing it held together a bit more tightly; as it is the characters feel very flat and the book loses its emotive force because of this. Still, it's definitely worth reading to get a sense of the reality of Apartheid and how a government can keep its own citizenry ignorant.

Personal!.......2004-01-30

One can't help but be touched by the personalities woven in this story. Far from stereotypes, the characters are given credibility as individuals, each with their own stories, each with their own reasons for action. Even with the fall of official apartheid, this book goes into the human condition, and with or without governmental promotion, apartheid or something very much like it, will always be with us.

Interesting and non-obvious look at apartheid. This book raises questions such as: what responsibility does one have for the crimes of a government that have benefitted you - even if you find those crimes repulsive and didn't ask for them; what kind of future can a nation have when it's children have been so brutalized that they become brutalizors themselves. I also think, as my title implies, that this book really exposes the way a community can blind itself or be blinded by others, gov't, media, etc., to the carnage and horror taking place all around them. If you can believe that a South African would be blind to the inhumanity trangressing in their country, then it's not so hard to believe how people in less brutal situations can also not understand or believe what goes on in their community.

Worth your time.......2003-10-21

Coetzee presents us with a picture of apartheid from the perspective of an old woman in South Africa who had never had a chance to get close to her own country's reality.

Definitely worth your time. Easy to read too.

I have been fortunate enough to get my hands on a copy of the latest book from SkipJack Press, and, as usual, publisher Jack Andrews has made a significant contribution to the world of architectural ironwork with the publication of this book. It examines ironwork from a unique perspective. It's about a specific place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and a specific time - roughly 1840 to 1930. However, it is not about a specific technique. There is a lot about cast iron in this book as well as forged iron. It's more about the context in which architectural iron was used, both cast and wrought, and how examples of the iron worked with the houses and buildings where it was place.

Before reading this book, I looked down on cast iron as a poor substitute for blacksmithing. In today's world, that opinion may be debatable, but after heading this book I've changed my views. I will never look at cast iron the same way again. The examples of early iron casting shown in this book are works of art in the truest sense. Throughout the book examples of how the ironwork enhances and supports the architecture, both cast iron and wrought iron, and why the iron works. For example, the author examines the symbolism found in a cemetery gate detail, complete with cast weeping willow tree, doves and lambs, and explains that it was used as a typical Victorian image for the grief of family members.

The information about casting is most interesting; at the same time, there is no shortage of wrought iron examples here. Many photographs of Yellin's work in Philadelphia are included which is logical, since Philadelphia was the home of Yellin's Arch Street studio for so many years. There are many examples of railings and gates by other unknown blacksmiths as well, all in high-quality images by photographer Robert Golding. The 168 photographs are logically catalogued in the back of the book There is also a glossary; the book's research is documented with references, a bibliography is given, and it is indexed. These details help the book serve as a valuable research tool.

I can strongly recommend this book; the approach is unique, the commentary informed and the examples are beautiful. It would make a wonderful present for someone whose interests lie in the field of ironwork.

Practice and patience.......2005-10-04

I have this book and have done the execrises piecementaly over the course of a year and have suffered no ill effects. I was simultaniouly researching Dr. Yang Jwung-Ming's book on Qigong for Health and Martial Arts. What must be taken into account is the fact that like any other exercise routine you must work up to it and keep youself free from outside influences and polutants, such as alchohol and tobacco use, as well as participation in sex, which depletes Chi.You must also have a free and clear, disciplined mind.

As I was reading this I found a few interesting things I would like to impliment in my Qigong practice, however the author does go overboard. I mean, it's understandable how massaging certain private areas on occassion may help circulation of blood and vital flow of energy, BUT I don't think it's a good practice for anyone to start attaching heavy weights to his testicles. I kid you not, that's what this guy says to do.
A somewhat interesting book but if you do decide to read it please use some common sense.
A good book but be wary of the authors unhealthy obsession with his balls.

The Iron Shirt packing-breathing techniques have not been actively taught by Chia-based organizations for quite some years, because too many people were getting hurt.

Good material, dangerous to practice.......2004-04-19

While I do not really know weather or not master M.Chia is a real Daoist master, I do know that most of the techniques in this book take 15-20 years to learn, and only after fully mastering the standing meditation (1 hour daily), inner smile, microcosmic & macrocosmic orbit (after many years of hard daily training), you may start practicing the iron shirt (which is indeed not really necessary for a healthy life).

Just for a simple example, a friend of mine, who bought this particular book and started practicing it without consulting his whushu teacher first, got some major breath disorder and lost his erection for a couple of months.

The book indeed contains some interesting topics, worth reading, but be very careful and practice only under a supervision of an experienced master.

Nice How-To for Iron Shirt Concepts.......2003-08-26

After reading this book, I read the existing reviews here before writing mine.

I liked this book. It is like many Mantak Chia books,detailed and well-organized. I know that some reviewers complained about the organization, but what Chia does is give step-by-step instructions for a number of exercises. It gets confusing when trying to digest it in totality. Like reading a math text cover to cover. It helps if you read a part, practice it, master it. All of a sudden, the next chapter makes sense, and it works!

I think the reason why Chia does not focus more on energy is because he does that elsewhere. He has a number of books. He's focusing on the specific techniques for this specific process-- Iron Shirt.

I agree that one should not practice without an instructor. But it is impossible to really learn this stuff from a book. Internal martial arts in general. External martial arts, for that matter, too. Meditation, qigong, it all benefits from having an instructor. Books are ancillary materials. As are videos. References only, a different perspective. Supplements.

Particularly for those looking at enhancing your Wu Chi posture structurally, this is a great book. For standing meditation exercises, this is a great reference. As for danger with packing-- I always stick with Kumar Frantzis' 70% rule... do something 70%. As you progress, that 70% will become more and
more.

I particularly liked the way Chia mechanistically describes what to do step-by-step. When your instructor says, work on your chi belt and you stare and say-- how? Then your instructor says, feel this, now do it! And you say-- that's really cool, but I'm still not sure how to do it-- Chia gives you a roadmap. Or even if your instructor tells you how, Chia gives you a roadmap to compare with.

As for who is right/wrong, where Iron Shirt really came from, what preliminary exercises should go with this or that-- I think there are many paths to any one goal. This is one. There are others. Now go find the one that gets you where you want to go.

Excellent intro to subject.......2007-10-08

As a practitioner of old style Yang tai chi I found this book invaluable in extending my knowledge of iron shirt chi gung. Technically, tai chi can be considered a combination of medium and small circle martial chi gung, but it also includes a lot of iron shirt practices as well. Essentially a form of Taoist yoga, it is finally being discovered and is receiving the attention it deserves in the west. Whether you ascribe to the more esoteric aspects of chi theory or not, the physical and and health benefits of iron shirt chi kung are substantial and can be enjoyed by anyone willing to put some effort into it. Overall, a fine book and worth your time and money.

Iron shirt chi kung is a must for every martial artist. The author explains in detail how to apply rooting to the ground, how to apply abdominal breathing, why is an upright positioning important and why only from a relaxed body and mind one can generate maximum power.

Fantastic Beauty Book.......2003-05-26

Diane Irons' "911 Beauty Secrets" is filled with many beauty tips, model and celebrity secrets, diets, homemade remidies and masks, and much more. Many of the tips in here are easy to follow and require no other materials besides the ones easily found at home, at the grocery store, and at the beauty supply store. Plus, the book includes fashion and shopping tips, with advice on everything from what to put in your handbag to and the clothes that will work best for you. There are many quick emergency fixes in here, such as taking care of cuts, skin burns, cold sores, etc. Plus, you will get good tips on choosing the right types and colors of cosmetics, quick beauty fixes, and more. My favorite thing about this book were the beauty masks and treatments. For example, did you know that a corn meal and papaya treatment can make the dry skin on your elbows feel super soft? Or that soaking a skin burn in milk for fifteen minutes will soothe the burn? How about using some petroleum jelly to ease the sting from a paper cut? These are just some of the marvelous beauty treatments you will find in this book. This book is a very wise purchase. Trust me, after you've bought it, you will be refering to it all the time to look your best!

According to my opinion it's really a Book with a capital B. I'm from Europe, so it was quite difficult to find it out but it was worth the pains. I like it, I love it and it belongs to the best when I'm compairing it with other books written in this way and about these problems. And that's why I'm rating it with 5 stars.

Very good basic beauty book.......2002-08-21

Many beauty books include large color photos, and/or illustrations. This is a text book only, and actually this is a good thing, because it means that the book is full of so much information. It covers the beauty basics, and lots more. Attitude, style, skin care, hair care, emergency diets and so on. Not only the classic beauty chapters are included. Among the more rare ones are Seasonal beauty, Beauty on a budget and Beauty on the road. Not every aspect of beauty is addressed though. Elaborate hair styles are not included, for instance.

This is a book to read if you want to learn the basics and go beyond them. I recommend you to read it from cover to cover, because there are so many good beauty tips in it that are spread all over the book. If you only read the chapter in which you think it is included, you might miss something. On the other hand, the book has a good index, so if you know what you are looking for, you will find it.

I think this book will age well, because the author focuses on feeling good about yourself and finding your classic style. Even the fashion chapters will survive for a long time, since they are based on how to build a basic wardrobe (fashion accessories can always be added), combination of clothes, caring for accessories etc.

The format of the book makes it very handy. Diane Irons says that "beauty is every woman's birthright" and gives every woman the means to achieve beauty - that is, every woman gets the knowledge she needs in order to make the best of what she has got. This book also inlcudes inspiration and motivation - reading it makes you feel more beautiful, already.

Well, what can I say? I'm seventeen and I still enjoy reading my copy of this book from time to time. The story is creative, exciting, and fast-moving, and the world White describes is so rich and lovely. The scope of this story and the lessons skillfully woven into it make this a wonderful choice for older children, but again, as I said, I don't think I will ever tire of this series. This is truly enjoyable fantasy writing; one of those books you can lose yourself in on a rainy day.

Persevere and be rewarded.......2000-06-06

At first, I was turned off by how much of a rip-off of Narnia this was. But get into it, and you realize it has a style all its own. Gaal, the semi-mortal Christ-figure, is a majestic, personal character, sometimes cryptic and sometimes playful. Murmia, the evil-personified figure, is no crystalline icecube like the White Witch, but is a seductive, appealing magician; and beneath her beautiful exterior is a rotting,decrepit hag. Pervading this whole book is the new character Mary's search for beauty and acceptance, and Murmia plays upon this and recruits Mary to her side. Only Gaal can take the girl back for himself. Also appealing, though certainly nothing new in fiction-writing, is the thoughtful intertwining of several plotlines at once, which atone for White's clever yet mediocre style of writing. Characterization is one of the strenghts of "The Iron Sceptre."

Pretty good........1998-12-16

It's not as good as the first of the sequel, but it's okay. It's too much like THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE, however. Four stars is pretty good for it.

Bought the Iron Giant video, paperback, and the original version (The Iron Man) so my college age son could enjoy them again and keep them for his future family.

A children's book.......2005-06-21

I bought this book because I loved the movie.

This was also a really cool book, but it's very different from the movie. There are actually only a few concepts taken from this book that made it into the movie--a) that the iron giant can fix himself, b) that the boy's name is Hogarth, and c) that the iron giant eats metal. Nothing else is the same, really.

Brad Bird is a genius to make the movie he did out of this book.

I didn't realize this, but the book was written in 1968. It's very much in children's book format, with small, chunk-sized stories, that would be very fun to read out loud.

Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Very Different from the Movie.......2005-01-13

I first saw "The Iron Giant" as a movie and it's a fantastic movie. When I saw a copy of the book for sale I quickly snatched it up, I thought I would read it with my daughter.

The thing that first surprised me about this book is that it is beautifully written. It's obvious from its prose that Ted Hughes is also a poet. The slightly sophisticated language might be too much for those under 7, but I found it refreshingly charming.

The second surprise was that this book had very little to do with the movie. There's an Iron Giant in the movie and book as well as a young boy...and that's about it. The theme's are the same (in that this world can be a world of peace instead of a world of violence and fear) but both approach this lesson from different directions.

In the book, the Iron Giant, tricked by the boy, falls into a trap set for him by fearful farmers. The farmers quickly dispose of the giant, but the giant returns and it's up to the boy again to figure out how best to deal with him. In the end the boy and giant become friends but there is a bigger threat on the horizon, a space dragon the size of Australia has come to earth and only the Iron Giant can save the planet.

There's a lot of deep information here for such a short children's book. The Iron Giant (like in the movie) represents misguided fear. The space dragon can mean a number of things, but I align it with this planets habit of aggression... an aggression that threatens to consume us all. This book was written 30 years ago, but it seems timelier now than it did in the 1970's.

Wonderful Book & Movie.......2004-12-14

Although this isn't the place to have a complete discussion of the Hughes/Plath relationship I suggest that the previous reviewer do more reading. Hughes did not "drive two wives to suicide" although it is popular to vilify him. Plath had previous suicide attempts well before ever meeting Hughes although this is generally ignored by those who wish to turn her into a feminist icon and blame him for her death. I could go on, but this is not the place for it.

THE IRON MAN, NOT THE IRON GIANT.......2004-07-28

Don't let the illustration on the cover (or the title) fool you. This is Hughes' The Iron Man story that was the basis for the animated film The Iron Giant. Don't buy this book for bedtime reading expecting a novelization of the movie. The stories are similar but Hogarth plays (in my opinion) a minor role here and the Giant battles a monster from the constellation of Orion instead of elements of our government. The b&w illustrations are a nice touch but I don't think they'd fly in a large story time environment. The book also lacks the elements of friendship, self sacrifice, and non violence that were touched on in the film. Having said all that, enjoy the book for what it is - a story in 5 nights.
