Couldn't put it down.......2007-04-16
I read this book way back in the summer of 1988, when I was awaiting the birth of my daughter. It was the perfect novel to read during such a hot summer, during which the temperatures in the Midwest were similar to the hottest temps in the South. I found it fascinating that the practice of voodoo and herbal medicine as portrayed in the novel had survived through so many generations. The characters were strong and memorable. I ran across this book again while browsing in the library, and I am thinking about recommending it for the book club where I work.
You'll be happy that you had giving the time to read this book........2006-05-27
I tell you a good book is one of those books that you're actually sad when it's over. That was "Mama Day" for me.
What many reviewers stated in here is true, Gloria Naylor is a master storyteller. Her characters are vividly drawn, her humor is by turns laugh-out-load funny or subtlety sarcastic, and her prose quite often caused this reader to sit back and savor the sheer creativity, beauty and freshness of the images which she creates.
I've read a lot of books by the current crop of black authors but nothing has touched me and made me fall totally in love with a book like Mama Day. This book was brilliant and I couldn't put it down until it was over.
In this book Willow Springs is a sparsely populated sea island just off America's southeastern coast whose small black community is dominated by the elderly matriarch, Miranda ``Mama'' Day. When Mama Day's great-niece, Cocoa, marries, she returns to Willow Springs with her husband for an extended visit. Once there, strange forces both natural and supernatural work to separate the couple. After visiting the menacing Ruby, a local root doctor, Cocoa becomes dangerously ill, and the struggle for her life showcases Naylor's talent for descriptive prose. Though the novel as a whole fairly breathes with life, it is marred by the unintentionally comic death of a major character, which is attacked by a vicious chicken.
This is a masterpiece of contemporary literature, a pleasure to experience. "Mama Day" is an entertaining and original look at family, community, and love. With a little voodoo sprinkled in for good measure.
Moving, poignant, love story!.......2005-12-27
There are really no adequate words to express what a wonderful read you about the embark upon should you take the time to read this book. It is one of the most poignant and soul-stirring love stories I have perhaps ever read. Each page is meant to be savored as though one is sampling a fine wine, as Naylor weaves a spellbinding tale of how love truly does conquer all.
One of my favorites........2005-01-05
It is raining in San Francisco and I just picked this book up to read again....for the fourth time. It feels like visiting an old friend: warm, comfortable and easy.
I lost too many people because of AIDS, one in particular. Thanks to this book I know Randy Garvin will ALWAYS look like love to me. If you read this story, you know what I mean.
Brilliant!.......2003-12-09
Brilliant! Powerful! A genius of a writer! Prose worthy of a Pulitzer! Would that I could aspire to be such a great writer. Naylor's style is at times playful, other times penetrating, piercing the soul of the reader with vivid images of the small town and colorful characters. Subject matter is a little dark for me (especially toward the end) but the writing is superb!

The Truth from one who lived it.......2007-09-14
This is a great book, shining the light of truth on the darkness of Joseph Smith's deceitful prophesy.
Religous Libel.......2006-07-23
I received a copy of this as a missionary in Texas in 1996. I skimmed through it and found many errors and what appeared to be intentional misrepresentations of the Mormon church, its doctrines, and its members.
If you receive a copy of this book, I suggest you take an honest look at it, write a complaint letter (this is what I did), and mail the book and the letter back to the publisher. They need to be reminded they are making money off of making a mockery of an extraordinary religious faith, and that is unethical, if not immoral. It is absolutely NOT what Jesus would do. It is what Jesus had done to him.
Finding the truth.......2005-03-30
I was struggeling to find a place and a church of my own when I started investigating the Mormon Chruch. This book really helped because like myself the author loved and cared about the mormons in her life, as do I. She doesnt bash the LDS church but informs anyone who reads this as to the beliefs and teachings of the church that even most of there own members are never told about. I learned that the God and Jesus of the mormon church is not the God and Jesus that have saved me from my sinfulness. This book is very informative and if you are learning about the LDS church I encourage you to read it because it will tell you things that mormon members will not, wether they know the teachings or not.
Existential talking out, and we find truth on the floor........2002-11-03
This book is written in a soft and gentle tone, which, of course, excuses anything that is written. As long as it is gentle, and respectful, we should accept it. It is essence of tolerance, which is more important than truth.
This book is a narrative, since, as Pope points out -Alexander pope, not John Paul-"How can we reason, but from what we know." We, if necessary, must make hasty generalizations from our lives and imposes these generalizations on reality. Certain things demand that we act, and this book outlines one of these areas.
I think the ruff diamond in this oyster is it's "existential eye-looking." We are all eyes and see the world. We take things in, weather we be Mormon, Gentile, Confused, or lonely. Or all of these together. We are in a fix, and talking things out can be a relief.
That is what this book is all about: talking things out, and making truth from our mere experiences. What else can we do?
All Christianity deserves a thoughtful review.......2001-10-29
This book is thoughtful in its refutation of Mormonism, but for anybody to say they know the 'real' Christ is utter self congratulation. Any Bible scholar can tell you that there is a minimum of one Christ per author of the Bible. Mormons made up a new religion (constantly evolving, even), yes, probably akin to something L Ron Hubbard would create. But do you all really believe that your brand of Xtianity is more true than anybody else's? Why? There are different versions of the Bible, even more interpretations of it, and a plethora of fanatical jerks who will force their own beliefs on the rest of the world. Religion should be about getting closer to god and a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in this life, not about being a part of the mighty majority, bent on the terestrial damnation of those less 'insightful' (or vain, maybe) than yourself.

Elephants!.......2006-08-20
My son -loves- elephants so it would be hard for this book to be a miss. The illustrations are beautiful.
Wonderful!.......2006-08-10
We have been reading this story to our 2 year old daughter since she was 2 months old and it's still her favorite book. She now recites the words as I flip through the pages - this book has definitely left an impression. Additionally, the pictures are colorful and fun! It's such a sweet story about the fun a mother and child have together, and the special bond the two share. I'm sure your little one will love this story just as much as mine does!
Favorite Bedtime book.......2006-07-28
My 2 year old and I read this every night. It is a wonderful book and we look forward to it every night.
"My Mama's love surrounds me always".......2006-07-12
Toddlers and Preschoolers will identify with the little elephant and how he enjoys the mom's company through the different activities of the day. It's a good book to reflect on the blessing of families. Good bedtime story. Beautiful illustrations.
A Beautiful Book - Words and Pictures.......2003-06-14
My son is almost 2 and this is one of his favorite books (and mine too!). The words are put together so eloquently and the amazingly beautiful illustrations make it the complete package.
The book really captures the love between a mother and her child.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book.......2004-06-09
While all of the books in the Hilltop School series by Rosemary Wells are excellent, this book is exceptional. The message that parents always come back is delivered in a particularly effective manner. The book also shows how Yoko separates from her mother in an incremental process over which she has some level of control. A truly brilliant book.
Get your child ready for school.......2002-09-20
I've read a lot of 'first day of school' type books recently, getting my daughter prepared for preschool. I'd rate this as one of the better books we read, and if your child likes Yoko and the other kids in Wells' Hilltop School books, I strongly recommend it. What I like about the book is that it gently repeats the reassuring idea, that parents "will come back. They always do." Once Yoko accepts that, she's ready to be left at school by herself.

The Hundred Acre Woods Celebrates Mother's Day.......2005-08-04
Christopher Robin informs Roo that tomorrow is Mother's Day. Roo gets excited and exclaims he wants to give his Mama a surprise. Tigger overhears, and of course he loves surprises too! Next thing you know Pooh, Owl, Eeyore, Piglet, and Rabbit join with Christopher Robin, Tigger and Roo to throw a surprise party for Roo's Mama, Kanga.
At 32 pages, this delightful story portrays the excitement of giving. But more importantly, it also shows that who you are is much more important than what you have or what you are able to give.
This is Step Into Reading Level 2 book which means that it's geared towards pre-schoolers through Grade 1. For children who recognize some familiar words on sight and can sound out new words with help, I Love You, Mama! is just right for that level. Level 2 features basic vocabulary, short sentences and simple stories. However, this book from Random House is notably longer than its counterparts from Simon Says (who would categorize this book as Level 1).
My son asks me to read this book pretty often and is learning to sound out words himself. All in all, a great book for beginning readers.

Book Description
Somewhere there's a mama
lifting baby from a crib,
Snapping rompers, looping laces,
Brushing crumbs from baby's bib.
With its simple rhyming verse, this book pays tribute to mamas and children. From waking babies up in the morning to hushing baby to sleep at night, mamas' lives revolve around their children. The gentle illustrations depict all kinds of mamas and babies, sunning on the seashore, walking in a bustling market, and quietly rocking in a wooden chair. But wherever they are, mamas and babies are together, and this book celebrates the special bond that they share.

Another Marvelous Poem by Linda Ashman!.......2006-04-18
My son loves anticipating the words that complete Ms. Ashman's clever rhymes (about mothers) in this lovely book. And as a mother, I appreciate the sentiments in the poem; the verses are meaningful and resonant without being cliched or artificially sweet. The ending is perfect, and gives us a happy, loving moment to share together every time we read this book. Already a favorite in our household, like several other books we treasure by this talented writer.

Inspiration for Everyone!.......2004-09-04
Ms. Klein's book is an inspiration for anyone going through a life crises; illness, death, divorce. Her writing is clear and concise, with no stumbling blocks for the grammatically particular among us. Her sense of humor softens the harsh realities we must face when life demands the full strength of our character. Her book gives us practical application steps with the philosophical and spiritual insight to apply them.
sensible sensitive advice on coping and healing.......2004-08-30
This is very special book written about breat cancer survival by someone who underwent a double mastectomy. It is easy to read and offers clear, thoughtful advice to others undergoing the same experience. It is also useful for people undergoing other kinds of hardships who want to adjust to their own difficulties and fight to be strong and healthy. In simple steps the author confronts the many difficult aspects of surviving a traumatic situation, learning to understand one's own needs and feelings, and strengthening one's own inner resources to achieve emotional well being. I was deeply touched by the author's honesty, positive outlook and sense of humor.

wonderful.......2000-03-24
I remember reading this short book first when I was much younger, and most recently a few weeks ago, at almost twenty years of age. This is a fabulous story - it was then and I think I enjoyed it even more now. One of the major things I took out of it was the reason some parents are so adamant about their children making presents rather than buying them - when you make something the end result isn't the sum total of the project - there is time and love and thought involved. When we, in today's over commercialized society, just walk into a store and pick up the first thing we see some of the individuality of the gift is taken away almost. And so although Mama wasn't immediately impressed by her wonderful store bought present as Anna hoped, as soon as she learned the amount of work and time that was spent in earning that money is when she truly understood the impact of the gift. It also teaches children that although parents and adults may sometimes seem unreasonable and uncomprehensible to our young minds, there is a rationale behind what they do. Sometimes finding out what that is is more important than following the "rules" so to speak. :) A truly delightful book, perfect for younger readers as well as older. I recommend it to everyone.
