Book Description
Jack Swyteck, a brilliant Miami defense attorney has spent years rebelling against his father, Harry, now Florida's governor. Their estrangement seems complete when Harry allows one of Jack's clients -- a man Jack believes is innocent -- to die in the electric chair.
But when a psychopath bent on serving his own twisted version of justice places both Jack and Harry in extreme jeopardy, the two have nowhere to turn but to each other. Together they must find a way to overcome their cunning tormentor's manipulation . . . even as the stakes are being raised to far more perilous heights.
Customer Reviews:
I'm glad I chose James Grippando!.......2007-09-04
I have a habit of choosing an author and reading their books from the beginning. Our library didn't have his first four books, so I bought them, I will read them and donate to the library. The first book was so captivating I had a hard time putting it down. Excellent writer!!
A good time-filler.......2006-12-01
James Grippando is a talented writer who invents some interesting and different storylines, but he tends to enter the realms of fantasy a little bit in his books.
This book is a good quick read that will make you read another Grippando book again but only if a number of other authors aren't available to be read, otherwise go for something more meaty and less unrealistic.
Fascinating Plot.......2006-08-20
Really enjoyed this book especially with this being his debut novel. I thought the idea of putting a pro-death penalty governor against possibly killing his own son was a fascinating plot. I'm not going to give you a plot summary. Amazon and other reviewers have already did that for me. I agree with some other reviewers that it does have some unbelievable plot holes but the writer writes them so well that you will overlook them. I also felt like he tried to wrap it all up in too neat of a package. I would still highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a legal thriller.
Grippando is Great!!!.......2006-07-05
I like Grippando's books. I can't wait to get to the end because there is usually some twist, but they are so enjoyable that I hate to see them end.
Definitely good.......2006-05-12
I think this is the best trial book I ever read. It has so many twists that you'd not have any inklings of what is going to happen next. You'll think that some parts are predictable but believe me this book is not predictable at all. Well of course you can predict something, the love story's end. The plot'll hook you to the book and you'll love all the characters but the bad guy.
Customer Reviews:
I had to read this - First two Swyteck novels.......2006-11-10
After reading 'Got the Look' and 'Lying with Strangers', I had to go back and find all of the Grippando books I had missed. And because I became so attached to the adventures of Jack Swyteck, I had to start with the Swyteck suspense novels. A previous reviewer was correct when she said that reading the previous books will give you an appreciation for the special friendship between Jack and Theo.

Grab a crepe, and explore the city of light alongside Nicole!.......2007-02-23
While many teenagers would do anything to leave their small hometowns, and get away from their parents for a semester, seventeen-year-old Nicole Larson is stricken with feeling the complete opposite. Instead of going to Paris for the semester, she would do absolutely anything to stay within the confines of Peabody Corner, Maryland, ringing in the first day of senior year with her three best friends Zara, Patrice, and Annie; and planning what she'll wear to Homecoming with her boyfriend of two years, Nate. But, alas, Nicole's parents are put-off by her constant discussion of how things will be once she and Nate get married, and can't help but feel that she's selling herself short by deciding to follow Nate to whatever college he decides to attend. Not only that, they're sick of seeing their daughter follow the lead of her friends, and want to see her break free from their control, and find her inner self. So, they force her to enroll in the S.A.S.S. (Students Across the Seven Seas) Study Abroad Program, which is how she finds herself smack dab in the middle of Paris, where she can't speak the language, and is forced to reside with an American family named the Smith's. The Smith's are perfectly nice people, of course, but their four children...well, their constant screaming leaves much to be desired. Nicole can't stand Paris almost instantly. The food looks creepy - there's no way she'll ever eat a snail - and the cars move way too fast. And the metro is more confusing than anything she's ever encountered in her life. But, as Nicole begins attending Parisian school, and learning more about the culture and the atmosphere of Paris, along with her new friend, a Swedish girl named Annike, Nicole's Parisian perspective begins to change. Suddenly, she isn't so creeped out by all things France, and begins to embrace the culture, as if it were her own. And, with a few sightseeing tours from the Smith's manny (male nanny), Luc, Nicole finds herself actually enjoying the Parisian life. However, when she learns that Nate isn't missing her as much as she expected, Nicole begins contemplating whether cutting her trip to Paris short, and returning to the States would be a better idea than breathing in more of the sights with her newfound friends.
In recent months, I have fallen in love with the idea of sitting in outdoor cafes in Paris, sipping cafe au lait, and munching on croissants, and have even begun embracing the works of various artists who display these types of scenes in their paintings. However, I realized that I knew very little about Paris, aside from the Eiffel Tower, and various other landmarks. So I was ecstatic to stumble upon an S.A.S.S. novel that took place in the city of lights. Cathy Hapka does a wonderful job of describing the nervousness that one feels when stepping out of their comfort zone, and being forced to take on an entire new culture - including language, to food, and even transportation! Hapka's character development for Nicole is wonderful. The way she brings Nicole more and more out of her shell throughout PARDON MY FRENCH, giving her the chance to become more confident with herself, and make her own decisions is truly uplifting; while her ability to really make Nicole realize the error of her ways back home is interesting to delve into. While Nicole is a fabulous character, it is her Swedish friend, Annike, who really claims the spotlight in my eyes. While Annike is not an extremely large character in PARDON MY FRENCH, her presence really puts all eyes on her. Her positive outlook on everything surrounding her - from the Nutella and banana crepes she savors, to the Parisian museums - really makes the reader feel more positive about their own surroundings. She is so jovial, and kind, and just really sparkles as a character from the moment she's introduced. In fact, I hope that, someday, Annike is the star of her own spin-off S.A.S.S. novel, because I'd love to learn more about her. Grab a crepe, and explore the city of light alongside Nicole!

Cute and Quick Read.......2006-07-28
I bought this to read on a school trip and believe me, my friends wanted updates on everything that happened in this story. Give it a try!
The Unknown Journey.......2006-07-06
If you are the type of person who loves to travel, this book is for you. Although this novel can be taken to merely discuss Nicole's journey to France, her emotional journey is also an important one, and rightfully shows the struggles of today's exchange students - along with the romance they meet along the way! In France, she is forced to experience new, unknown French ways instead of being a sheltered teenager. For example, she must learn to navigate around the French metro.
On a romantic level, this novel was a bit cliche for me. She falls in love with a French guy - why does this always happen in every exchange novel/movie?!?! The romance did add a little fun to the book, however, so I would recommend this book as a great read, especially if you like to be exposed to different cultures. There are also other books in the S.A.S.S. series, so after you read this one, go for them!!
Another Good S.A.S.S. Book..........2006-06-30
I really enjoyed this enstallment in the S.A.S.S. series.
Nicole is aboslutely against going to France to study abroad. She has friends, a great boyfriend, and American stuff to do. And to top it all off, the family she stays with is a little on the crazy side. And their 'babysitter', Luc, is annoyingly adorable. Nicole just wants to be back at home. But when she finally relaxes a little and learns to enjoy herself while studying in France, Nicole finds that her stay was a life-changing experience.
I didn't flip the pages furiously or read this one in a day, but it was a cute little book that I enjoyed reading. A good read if you too wish to study abroad and find love along the way. :)
Great Book!.......2006-01-02
Nicole's (the main character)parents really want her to go to Paris but, Nicole really does not want to. Nicole cannot speak or read French at all and she is very happy with how her life is. She wants to spend the rest of her life with her boyfriend Nate. Nicole gets sent to Paris but, is staying with an American family. Nicole meets some friends at school and a boy named Luc. When Nicole gets to Paris, she is not very happy at all. She wants to be home with Nate and her friends. As Nicole is in Paris, she starts to think more about things and ask more questions. She begins to realize new things about her life back home. At the end of the book, she is very happy that her parents sent her there.
This book is really good! I read it in 1 day because I couldn't stop reading it!
Book Description
In 31 Days, acclaimed historian Barry Werth takes readers inside the White House during the tumultuous days of August 1974, following Richard Nixon's resignation and the swearing-in of America's "accidental president," Gerald Ford.
The Watergate scandal had torn the country apart. In a dramatic, day-by-day account of the new administration’s inner workings, Werth shows how Ford, caught between political expedience, the country’s demands for justice, and his own moral compass, struggled valiantly to restore the nation’s tarnished faith in its leadership. With deft and refreshing analysis Werth illuminates how this unprecedented political upheaval produced new fissures and battle lines, as well as new opportunities for political advancement for ambitious young men such as Donald Rumsfeld, who had been Nixon’s ambassador to NATO, and Dick Cheney, already coolly efficient as Rumsfeld’s former deputy. A superbly crafted presidential history with all of the twists and turns of a thriller, 31 Days sheds new light on the key players and political dilemmas that reverberate in today’s headlines.
Customer Reviews:
Ford at his best........2007-05-30
Gerald Ford would have been a great president, if he won in 1976. As it was, he was average but is given high marks for his handling of the post Watergate era in the White House. In this very readable book by Werth, Ford is shown in his first 31 days after taking over the Presidency. Not only was Ford his own man, but he made some tough decisions. One of those tough decisions was in pardoning Nixon. Ford pardoned Nixon on principle. He didn't want the nation to lose focus on other more pressing issues such as inflation and the energy crisis. He took a lot of heat for this decision and may have lost the election because of this. However, he felt he did the right thing.
This is a nice read for those interested in Watergate and the presidency of Gerald R. Ford. Because of this book, I came to respect the difficult decisions Ford made in the White House.

A Lucid Foundational Study for Any New Historian.......2000-04-05
Natalie Davis' study probes the Pardon letters of sixteenth century France in an attempt to discern the fundamental attitudes of sixteenth-century society regarding violence, religion, crime and other matters. She points out that while the pardon letters are not necessarily the "objective" truth of events, they do provide us with an invaluable glimpse into how common people in the Sixteenth Century told tales and what aspects of life they considered important when composing their tales of woe and betrayal which lead to their imprisonment. Davis' style and insights are witty, concise and yet still in depth. The work moves from an analysis of which legal and professional officers influenced the writing of Pardon letters to what cultural values played a role in these tales. Davis's work is a must for any scholar who wishes to use archival material in his or her study. She provides the reader with a new approach to archival material which allows him or her to free themself from concerns about "did this really happen or not?" and allows them to address larger issues such as "why did they percieve a crime in this way?"
Book Description
Fr. Francis Randolph presents a very positive and practical understanding of the immense value of the sacrament of confession for the modern Catholic. Father Randolph helps the reader to see how the sacrament of confession meets the deepest needs of the penitent on the spiritual, emotional and psychological levels.
Step by step we follow the different stages of the rite, looking at the various elements of the sacrament and what they mean for the average sinner in the box. The author draws on his own experiences, on both sides of the grille, to explain what is actually happening in this sacrament, and why it is so helpful for growing in the love of God and neighbor. Because of so much recent confusion over the nature and purpose of the sacrament, the book tackles the common objections and anxieties over confession, and recommends frequent confession for getting rid of stress and anxiety, and growing in confidence before God.
Customer Reviews:
A Must Read for All Catholics.......2007-09-06
In Pardon and Peace, Fr. Francis Randolph shows Catholics the immense value of Confession. Whether you are a person who receives this sacrament on a regular basis, or if you're someone who has been away from the Sacrament for a while, this is a wonderful guide to deepen your spiritual faith through Confession. Fr. Francis writes in simple, everyday language, but in this simplicity comes some of the most beautiful writing I have ever read.
Nuts and Bolts Approach to Confession.......2003-01-10
Fr. Francis Randolph takes a practical and personable approach to the sacrament of confession. This is a helpful book for Catholics who have been away from the sacrament for some time, or for Catholics who are wondering if they go too often ("scruples").
The book is structured into eleven chapters, encompassing the entire form of the sacrament. From "Bless me Father for I have sinned" to "the merits of the Blessed Virgin Mary," Fr. Randolph explains both the form and meaning of each part of the sacrament.
Mixed in with the theological and canonical discussions, Fr. Randolph brings in the practical experience he has, from ministering to a large congregation in England. Fr. Randolph shares humerous and poignant stories, engaging the reader in an otherwise dry topic. Fr. Randolph takes pains to explain the changes since Vatican II, and encourages Catholics to engage in the new forms. He also addresses common questions such as, "how often should I go to confession?" and "what is a sin?".
This is a worthwhile read for all Catholics who want to understand confession. At 185 pages, it is a short but valuable addition to Catholic studies.
A Needed Guide.......2003-01-05
Fr. Randolph has written a highly useful work for Catholics who regularly use the sacrament of penance and for those Catholics who are coming back to the sacrament after much neglect. He provides topical advice relevant for today's society. For example, he gives guidance on the common situation in which people realize years later that their prior lifestyle was in fact gravely sinful. His recommendation is that, in spite of their lack of knowledge, they should still bring these sins to confession. This situation in which many people can actually be ignorant of gravely sinful conduct, especially sexual conduct, is common today among younger generations because the wider society now accepts as normal what the Christian moral tradition has always viewed as seriously wrong. This particular situation is but one example of the instances where Fr. Randolph gives needed advice for today's Catholic. When so many pulpits are unfortunately silent on the need for the regular use of this sacrament, Fr. Randolph has written a guide that is sorely needed in order to renew the role of this sacrament in the Church.
An excellent guide for all Christians.......2002-02-23
In this well-organized book the author writes clear, straightforward prose that provides wise and kind-hearted guidance to the much-misunderstood sacrament of confession.
The book is valuable for persons who aren't Catholic or Christian but want to understand the Biblical and historical origins of Confession. It is also quite helpful to anyone new to the Church and unsure of how to confess, or to a lapsed Catholic considering a return. Even a Catholic who regularly goes to Confession will find it most helpful and enlightening.
The contents include both excellent practical guidance in what and how to confess, and also concise explanations of the history and disputes surrounding Confession, including the notorious topic of Indulgences (which turn out to be far more reasonable in their origins than you are likely to realize, even though they eventually became a source of corruption the Church had to reform).
The author is associated with one of the religious communities known as Oratories that the brilliant convert John Henry Newman established in England, which helps to explain both his admirable writing style and his well-balanced spirituality--he avoids the extremes of harshness and lazy indifference.
As the author makes clear, Christ established Confession not to burden us with guilt but rather as an honorable way to relieve us of guilt so that we might approach the holy joy of the saints: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly."

A triumphant story of injustice overcome.
Customer Reviews:
Justice, southern American style..........2007-08-13
This book was on my "save" list for some time after I heard about it on NPR. Glad I finally ordered it. Another well-written, moving story about how unequal "justice" can be in this country. It's easy to get burned out and not want to deal with it, but stories like this remind us why we have to keep caring.
Touching, interesting, and honest.......2007-08-11
Calvin C. Johnson Junior's story shines a spotlight on the issues within the American criminal justice system, yet is story is also one of self-discovery. Together Johnson and Dr. Greg Hampikian write of a travesty with honesty and integrity. Even though this story has a happy ending, don't expect it to read like a novel. It deals with heavy topics that are handled without ever forgetting there are real people involved. The authors don't attempt to paint Johnson as a hero or a victim. They portray him as a human complete with flaws. At time he will infuriate you and at others touch your heart deeply. Telling someone's truth as it really was is a difficult job, but Johnson and Hampikian shine in Exit to Freedom.
Captivating.......2007-04-05
I first heard about Mr. Johnson's experience on NPR and immediately purchased the book. Once I picked it up, I could not put it down. I do not normally read autobiographies, but working in the judicial system, I was interested in reading what Mr. Johnson's experience was like; a black man, falsely accused of crimes he could not have committed and then being incarcerated for the entirety of his youth.
In one sense this was a heartbreaking tale of an educated young man's life being stripped away from him because of pride and prejudice. When I had learned that he went to trial in 1983 I was astounded by the blatant racism that still existed in Atlanta, Georgia, a city I thought was the mecca for Black progression and tolerance. Obviously I was wrong.
Mr. Johnson spent his entire youth in prison, among men that he himself admitted he would not be friends with if he were out on the street. Johnson had a college degree, came from an affluent family and knew how to work hard to get what he wanted. Unfortunately, like many of us when we are young, he made some dumb decisions and because of them got his name and face in the criminal justice system.
However, this book is not a tale of a life wasted, but how, even through the worst of times, a man overcame his anger, hatred and hopelessness and forgave those who had a hand in putting him behind bars. His recount of prison life is raw and graphic, but it also shows that the men behind bars are not animals and that each of us need forgiveness and friendship. The only part I found difficult to read was the recount of his trial. It absolutely infuriated me that a judge and jury could hold so much prejudice against a man because the color of his skin. The judge that presided over Mr. Johnson's case is now retired, but there were times I wanted to write the most brandishing letter admonishing him for not upholding the Judicial Code of Ethics. However, C.C. Johnson forgave, so must we.
This is a definite must read for anyone interested in the criminal justice system. It is an eye opener of how things can go wrong for a charged offender. But, like Mr. Johnson said, we must have laws and even with its imperfections, our system of justice is still the best in the world.
Exit To Freedom.......2006-09-25
To the authors: I just wanted to let you know how much the book moved me (enjoyed is clearly not the right word). Calvin's powerful, heartbreaking story is so eloquently written, I shared his frustration and anger over the idiocy of the bureaucracy that wrongly imprisoned him, and then read on with awe as his spirituality lead him out of the darkness. What an amazing human being - I am thrilled at his newfound happiness and full life. I have always been an opponent of the death penalty, and an advocate for prison reform, but if I had had any doubts about those convictions, your book would have wiped them out. Exit to Freedom should be put in the hands of every judge and DA in the country.
a must read.......2004-09-09
This is a great book, very well written and easy to read, and to add to all that it is a true story. If you want to read of a great case with Justice finally being done, you will want to read Exit to Freedom.

A reflective and timeless guide, enthusiastically recommended for practicing Catholics of all walks of life........2007-06-09
Written by pastor Father Alfred Wilson, Pardon and Peace was originally published in the 1940s; today, this laymen's guide to obtaining the full spiritual and mental gifts of the Catholic practice of Confession remains as relevant and valuable as ever. Chapters discuss the problems of inaccurate confession, the three conditions that must be present for a sin to be mortal, four guidelines for confessing venal sins, common excuses for avoiding Confession and why they should be shot down, helpful advice for those who find themselves confessing the same sins over and over, and much more. "God has given us ten commandments only. If we make additions of our own, we imply that God's way is not safe, which is blasphemous nonsense and implicit, if unintended, lecturing of the Almighty. By all means let us do the harder thing, the supererogatory, provided our motive is love not fear; but let us not make commandments out of counsels." A reflective and timeless guide, enthusiastically recommended for practicing Catholics of all walks of life.
a little beauty.......2006-05-27
Roman Catholic Books specializes in republishing great Catholic books that never should have gone out of print. Pardon and Peace is one of those. It was written in the 40s by a tough English priest. Fr. Wilson must have really been something. The gist of the book is simple: confession is a gift of love that will not only clean the soul but ease your mind as well. In short and ultra brisk chapters Fr. Wilson reminds the readers that his or her sins may be terrible but they probably aren't the worst that their priest has heard so don't be ashamed to get on with confession. He deals with scrupulosity and with people who pompously tell other people's sins but not their own and the people who get melodramatic and give unneeded details instead of humbly getting to the point. The book will make you smile, sigh and wince but it teaches a well needed lesson.
