Book Description

the PATH In a world in which we are daily forced to make decisions that lead us either closer to or further from our goals, no tool is as valuable in providing direction as a mission statement -- a brief, succinct, and focused statement of purpose that can be used to initiate, evaluate, and refine all of life's activities.Individuals and companies have recently been learning what history has demonstrated all along -- that people or groups with carefully defined missions have always led and surpassed those who have none. Yet the process of outlining that mission statement has been, up to now, an arduous one that all too few have committed the time, energy, and resources to undertake. In The Path, Laurie Beth Jones, author of the national bestseller Jesus CEO, provides inspiring and practical advice to lead listeners through every step of both defining and fulfilling a mission. With more than ten years' experience in assisting groups and individuals, Jones offers clear, step-by-step guidance that help you create a mission statement in a matter of hours rather than a month or years.Rich with humor, exercises, and case histories, The Path is essential listening for anyone seeking a lighter, clearer way in the world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Listen up, confused people! :).......2007-03-14

I am only part-way through the book, but I give it a high rating because it's quality so far. It offers both theory and practicality, and a "how to", along with plenty of examples; everything good teaching should do.
Now, I noticed that people that gave this book fewer stars did so because they approached the title of the book assuming it was to create a mission statement for their BUSINESS or CORPORATION. But, I interpret "create a mission statement for work and life" as creating your INDIVIDUAL mission statement for your INDIVIDUAL work...not necessarily your company as a whole. I'm imagining that'd be a whole 'nother book perhaps with a more global-systems take in regards to companies. I do believe Laurie Beth Jones has several workshops a year and private consulting to help with that, though, if you check out her personal website. Anyhow, for individuals, this seems to have a lot of value to me. But, the exercises in this book do not lend themselves, nor do they seem to be created for "companies". Just a clarification. Great book so far.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing!.......2006-10-06

Myself and three other friends read this book together in college and I can confidently say that it changes the entire direction of my life. Jones takes you through the necessary steps to write your mission statement. It was clear and easy. Once you know your mission statement decisions are so much easier to make, regarding the direction of your life. Does this task align with my overall mission or not? In the age of busyness and trying to constantly align our priorities, this is a very important starting point to this never-ending challenge.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for Personal Mission Statements!.......2006-04-23

For some time I struggled with the idea of developing a mission statement for my church and for my own personal life. With Jones' help, I now have a much better grasp of how to approach the subject privately and publicly. The author is easy-to-read and follow, yet offers profound insights into just what a personal mission statement is.

Laurie Beth Jones is becoming one of my favorite authors, and this title is another example of her fine work.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all.......2005-09-25

Laurie Beth Jones should be a required read for anyone that is dealing with leadership. Her insights are well worth your time and is written in a manner that all could enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2005-09-24

If you are trying to put together things in your life and career, this book ties both of these together. There is a little bit of spiritual emphasis, a little bit of career emphasis, and some over-all life emphasis. A great balance. This book helped me to see why I was un-happy in my job over the past 3 years and why I am so happy in my new job. It gave me courage to start a new venture because I could tie things to my "life mission" 5 stars for this book!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

3 out of 5 stars Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

4 out of 5 stars Thoughtful.......2007-01-12

This was a thought provoking book. Unfortunately it doesn't tell you what your mission in life should be! However it does put into words approaches that are useful as you try to find your own purpose.
It was pretty short and relatively expensive for what you got!

2 out of 5 stars Its short and brief and not very helpful.......2006-10-17

The key in the book is How to Find your Mission in Life, well after reading this thing several times, I found it as unhelpful as the first read. Quite honestly it is full of feel good platitudes, which are not only Christian, and no roadmap. If you really want to find your mission perhaps try the other book, Parachute, the 2007 edition is superb.

5 out of 5 stars Read this book and you don't need to read all of the others.......2006-09-24

It really speaks to you. To answer the criticism of some, if you aren't a Christian, sub any other higher power.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Value and Peace in the Workplace.......2004-04-24

This book in written with numerous references to the Christian Bible. The author is writting through his christian backgound and using christianity as his vocabulary. This is not to say that people of other faiths or no faith could not find value in this book. As he is writting in "big picture", "macro" terms it would be impossible to do so without using "God" terms.

The book is simple and profound at the same time. It's basic premise is to find your greatest value and to see it as your place of vocation.

He states that there are 3 stages in finding your mission in life. The first is to connect with your God; the second is to do what you can to make the world a better place. My favorite is the third phase: a)"execise that Talent which you particulary came to earth to use -- your greatest gift which you most delight to use". b)"in the place(s) or setting(s) which God has caued to appeal to you and the most" and c) and for the purposes which God most needs to have done in the world".

I do not see what some reviewers have stated that it boiled down to waiting on some inspiration or spiritual leading. I especially liked the example of being as medical doctor and working in a leper colony. It has to be a match that is helpful for both sides or you will not be happy and will have missed your mission in life.

5 out of 5 stars Meditative Vocational Advice.......2003-07-08

I purchased this book two years ago and read it through, but it didn't impact me very much. I just pulled it out again to reread and was deeply moved by the author's conviction about the spiritual nature of life. Even if one has strong spiritual convictions, it is all too easy to compartmentalize work, family, friends, and spiritual life. Bolles reminded me of the "integrity" of integrated life and work. Although it is very short, this book should not be a quick read, rather, it is something to meditate on.

Book Description

At twenty-seven, Bo Peabody was an Internet multi-millionaire. In the heady days of the late 1990s, though, when every cool kid had an IPO, that wasn’t very remarkable. What is remarkable is that he’s even more successful today. He has co-founded five different companies, in varied industries, and made them thrive during the best and worst of economic times. Through it all, the one question everyone asks is: Was it his smarts that made him an entrepreneurial leader, or was it just plain luck? The truth is, Bo was smart enough to know when he was getting lucky. And he wants you to have the same advantage.

With proven methods for success and a witty, conversational voice, Bo takes the reader through the lessons his experiences as an entrepreneur have taught him. At the heart of Bo’s manifesto is a mantra that everyone, whether working for a multinational corporation or a solo start-up, should heed: If you want your business to be successful, make sure your work is fundamentally innovative, morally compelling, and philosophically positive.

Lucky or Smart? will teach you how to put yourself in a position to get lucky, create the right situations for success, and take advantage of every opportunity. It is the first truly authentic guide to an entrepreneurial life, a must read for anyone looking for his or her own road to fulfillment.

1 out of 5 stars Yawn........2007-09-29

This book is useless. I'm so surprised others gave it four stars. The author just got lucky with his timing and he inflated the valuation of his company by posing as a slacker CEO while in reality he was working 100 hour work weeks.

Then he was smart because he cashed out instead of going IPO because in his own words, he knew that the company was "all hat, no cattle". Then he took his money invested it in other companies that he "started" through his venture capital company. He actually doesn't talk about any of those operations so one wonders if he considers investing the same as starting a company.

Personally I wasn't looking for someone's luck story. I wanted "secrets to an entrepreneurial life" as the cover claims and what I really wanted was information that I could implement in the next company I start. This didn't teach me any. It was like reading an article in some bad paper, like USA Today, just longer.

If you want an autobiography of a random lucky guy, this is the book for you. If you want to make your business more successful without lying to the press or being someone you aren't, read Adrian Slywotzky. He can tell you some real entrepreneurial secrets that you can apply to your business.

4 out of 5 stars Short but very informative.......2007-08-13

I thouroughly enjoyed the read, it was like listening to a good story page after page and gleaning 1 or 2 lessons from it.

4 out of 5 stars Lucky and Short.......2007-04-16

This small book from the founder of Tripod is worth the hour it will take you to read it. Peabody was a `B' student and suggests that successful entrepreneurs are almost always `B' students: good at lots of things, experts at none. To compensate, `B' student entrepreneurs need to hire `A' student managers (and coders and VPs), who are excellent a one or two things, to successfully take a startup to maturity. This revelation is not rocket science, and not an entirely new concept either, but it is very interesting to hear how this strategy played out for Peabody and Tripod.

Even though he made millions, Peabody does not boast or make the silly claim--like many Internet millionaires--to have known all along that he was destined for greatness. In fact he is quite humble: he readily admits he was making a lot of his business strategy up as he went along, and that with Tripod, it could have just as easily gone the other way and ended in failure.

The three salient lessons from this very short memoir of an entrepreneur: work very hard, hire the right people, and be smart enough to know when you are getting lucky.

3 out of 5 stars A good book, not a great book. .......2007-03-21

I picked up this book on the recommendation a client. Mr. Peabody tells good stories and lays out some straightforward facts. In many ways, it's a nifty little autobiography with some useful nuggets of information.

The advice he gives is mainly for Type-A personality entrepreneurs; Risk-taking, project-starting individuals whose main focus is getting product out the door so their effort can be called a success.

For anyone who does not fit that mold, this book is not necessarily speaking to you. However, even if its not directed at you, you'll still gain some insight into why people like Peabody behave and think the way they do.

What I liked most:
-- Always sell. As the person at the top of the organization, always sell.
-- Recognize which role is naturally in you: Entrepreneur, or Manager, and then excel in that role.
-- Know what you don't know. Don't try to buffalo your way through things. To me this is part of being intellectually honest.

What could have been better:
-- I do agree that striving for "good" will be what gets a company off the ground, but that's the end of the road for the entrepreneur on that project anyway. After the entrepreneur moves on to other challenges, the company he leaves behind needs to press forward and strive to be great. That part needed more value ascribed to it.
-- Peabody talks a lot about selling at the entrepreneurial level, but never touches on the mechanics of developing a strategy for it. It may be instinctive to him, but it would have been nice to have him explain a more functional approach.

I liked the book. Quick read. Some good nuggets. Just not enough of them in the right places.

I suppose Peabody followed his own advice: He wrote a good book, not a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable Book for Entrepreneurs, Executives and Managers.......2006-11-10

This is one of the best business books I've ever read. It conveys highly insightful, meaningful ideas in a remarkably concise and common-sense way. No droaning on with complex business models or contrived new management theories. Peabody simply shares his views of what makes a successful entrepreneur and manager, and the importance of understanding the value of diverse personalities and skill sets. The ideas it contains are motivating, entertaining and invaluable. I've purchased several copies for colleagues. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring.......2007-05-27

After receiving my disappointing MCAT score and three unsatisfying grades, I saw the world was tembling in front of me. I began to question myself. Do I really have what it takes to become a doctor? Maybe I am not smart enough to compete with other people. I was feeling very discouraged until I encountered John Maxwell's "Success: One Day at a Time." In the book, it says success is not measured by how much one accomplishes but by how many problems one encounters, and one should never give up their goal just because it is difficult at times. I read the entire book in one sitting. The book really helped me to divert my attention from focusing on my lackings to my strengths. It helped me to build a new attitude toward the means of acheiving my goal.

I wish more people just knew what was written in this book. Its not really what you did in one situation or another, its who you are that makes you who you are. so if you had a bad day or somebody turned you down or something, dont crumble into pieces, just keep living the way you want and eventually- sooner than later- that will pay high dividents

This book was given to me by a co-worker years ago when leaving my first counseling position. Ever since then it has inspired me and been a resource that I constantly utilize. Ive used it in my practice of therapy as well as my personal life. Great book that will never become outdated. Buy it and use it, and use it, and use it. Its always close by for a reference on my daily journey. Highly recommended.

I have read everyone of Og Mandinos Books and all I can say is that he writes with brilliance, clarity, enthusiasm, and spirit. You can never go wrong with any of his books. He points out the path to success and motivates the spirit within to achieve all that we as human beings are capable. He helped me to tap into my innate genuis and create a life of prosperity and creativity. If you havent raed his books, start now and your journey of the spirit will begin. He was a born writer and even after his passing continues to have a great influence on many people old and young. He truly lived a purposeful and divine life. Go buy all his books and enjoy the growth and enlightenment. After that Buy my Book " Your daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and Present". Enjoy and rememeber you are capable of great things in your life.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite author because of his messages........2001-12-22

My most favourite author is Og Mandino. I read only non-fiction books. I have read all of Og's books(12). I have read over 500 books since 1986(thanks to Brian Tracy). In my opinion anybody who has had a setback should read "A Better Way of Life."

Og went from riches to poverty to riches. Read: A Better Way of Life. His story - how he went from a successful salesman to an alcoholic and "lost" his wife and daughter and lost his job. He was going to kill himself and a book that accidentally "fell in his hands" turned his life completely around. He later became editor of Success Magazine in the U.S. and wrote many books.
I suggest you read "A Better Way of Life" on how he went from success to failure and then back to even greater success.

However the best chapter in any all the books I have read is: Chapter XVIII in Mission Success. It is so good that I committed the whole chapter to my mind and I now recite it from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars My Daily Mission... Success!.......2001-09-28

This is another great book by Og. I read this book and made several "notes" while doing so. Since I first began to read Mandino's books- I have found it extremely helpful to refer to specific things on a regular basis. I have typed the "Seeds Of Success" and read it at least once a day to help me keep these ideas and mottos fresh in my mind. This book has brought me hope where there was little to none before. One thing that this book helped me to realize is that each individual has his or her own conception of success... I am the only one who can determine that for myself. It also reminds me to "let go" of past situations; it can't be changed any way. Today, I will be the best I can and will not be included in that group of people who have regrets, yet do not take any action to make things otherwise. To merely survive in life and to just "exist" is not enough anymore. I want to truely live life to the fullest and Og gives me the "seeds of success" to do that.

5 out of 5 stars This book contains the secrets of success.......2000-08-17

Teachers of writing will tell you to write what you know. This book, centered around a bombadier's experiences in WWII, was written by a man who served as a bombadier in WWII, Og Mandino. It is designed to help you to learn from the experiences of people "in high places" who have gone before...some of the greatest philosophers, self-help teachers, and religious leaders. It is written in an unassuming method that will demand your attention, and can be read by almost anyone in just a few hours' time, but will deliver information and ideas that will take you a lifetime to fully realize how important they are.

5 out of 5 stars Great Reading.......1999-08-18

This is a book you won't want to put down. I was visiting a friend, and they had to step out and run an errand. This book was on the table and I picked it up and started reading. Needless to say, I ended up taking the book home and finishing it. The story line takes place in England during World War 2. An American bombadier is asked to do an impossible mission during the height of the war. The story of him, and the people that he takes the time to get close to are an imspiratation to us all. This book will touch your heart.

Book Description

In this practical and engaging guide, top fundraising consultant Mal Warwick introduces an entirely new and revolutionary approach to fundraising strategy and planning. He shows nonprofit organizations how to set fundraising goals based on mission and how to select, implement, and stay with the right strategies to meet those goals. His five fundamental fundraising strategies are Growth, Involvement, Visibility, Efficiency, and Stability (GIVES), all of which link directly to specific and appropriate fundraising goals. The decision as to which strategy to use springs from the organization's mission, and all fundraising activities are focused on fulfilling that mission.

Through real-world examples, Warwick shows readers how to choose a primary strategy that will drive both long-term fundraising planning and day-to-day fundraising activities. He then takes them step by step through the process of integrating the strategy into current operations, evaluating its progress, and sticking to the chosen strategy while facing the inevitable changes, obstacles, and setbacks that nonprofits encounter every day. He also provides self-tests to help readers determine which strategy and tactics will be most effective for their organizations. The Five Strategies for Fundraising Success ensures that organizations make informed, productive decisions about their futures.

5 out of 5 stars Raising Money? Start here!.......2002-05-03

I'm using this book as a crutch in my volunteer activities with a local non-profit. It's excellently written and helps as a primer for both the strategic and tactical parts of our efforts. I highly recommended as a starting point and a reference for any individual or group that is looking for a good framework to help approach the highly-complex and difficult world of getting the fuel to make a non-profit successful.

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for Five Strategies.......2001-03-02

The Jossey-Bass Nonprofit & Public Management Series adds another excellent resource with the publication of Mal Warwick's book, The Five Strategies for Fundraising Success: A mission-based guide to achieving your goals.

The central thesis of this nearly 300-page volume is that the way you raise funds for your organization can help you achieve your mission. Warwick finds that too often organizations tie their fund raising to short-term, fiscal year goals that require fund raisers to "get the money in the door now" rather than taking the time to cultivate donors for larger, future gifts.

In The Five Strategies, Warwick introduces the reader to the GIVES System, a method for analyzing, planning and evaluating an organization's fundraising strategy. The strategies are: Growth, Involvement, Visibility, Efficiency and Stability, hence GIVES.

In discussing Growth as a fundraising strategy, Warwick is not focusing on raising more money per se, but rather on broadening the donor base, having more donors next year than this year, and still more the year after that. A Growth strategy, according to this book, is dynamic and is characterized by audacious goals, bold leadership and low entry-level gifts.

Involvement as a strategy takes organizations beyond seeking gifts from donors to building stronger relationships with them. When supporters are active and committed, organizations can raise far more money. Organizations for whom public opinion is crucial are encouraged to adopt a Visibility strategy. Characteristics of the strategy are broad public interest, many stakeholders and brand identification.

Raising money at the lowest possible cost per dollar raised is the key to an Efficiency strategy. Planned giving, major gift programs, foundation and corporate grant solicitation and monthly giving are among the tactics that can be employed in an efficiency strategy. Warwick warns, however, that efficiency isn't always the best approach. A careful analysis of the organization's strategic choices is required.

Endurance is the core attribute of the Stability strategy. Among the tactics that can be used in a stability strategy are to build an endowment fund; employ electronic funds transfer (EFT) for fulfillment of donor pledges and engage in diversified fundraising activities.

Selecting a strategy must take into account the life cycle of the development program, the age of the organization, or both. For each of the five strategies, Warwick provides several real-life examples, not all of them success stories. This is very helpful for understanding how it might work and in identifying potential pitfalls. Warwick points out that a single strategy is not likely to remain appropriate for all time for any given organization.

The book provides details on how to pick the right strategy for your organization, common obstacles to implementing the strategies, what fundraising tactics will work with each strategy and how to evaluate your strategies.

My only disagreement with Warwick is in his definitions of vision and mission. He defines vision as why your organization exists and mission as what it does. I see the mission as clarification of purpose and an indicator of why the organization is doing what it does, while vision is what the organization aspires to look like after it succeeds in implementing its strategies and achieving its potential. That difference of opinion aside, I think the book is a wonderful resource for everyone involved in the fundraising effort, from CEO's to development officers to board members to donors themselves.

Warwick's previous books have been related to direct response fundraising and most are "How-To" books. If you are looking for a book that provides a formula or set of instructions, The Five Strategies is not it. What you will find in this book, however, is a way to think strategically about your fundraising efforts. Mal Warwick's hope with The Five Strategies is that he can help those who work for and on behalf of not-for-profit organizations understand the consequences of the resource allocation choices they face and do a better job raising money for a sector that never has enough.

5 out of 5 stars Strategy for Business and Life.......2007-05-03

I purchased this book for vision modelling for my business and ended up buying copies for my entire development team (as well as for friends). It is well written, engaging and helped me define a clearer vision. The use of the house model has proven a very effective business tool in terms of keeping on track in our early stage development. I have adopted the model for my own personal vision and found it equally as effective, and thought provoking. I am looking forward to reading Ohlsson's next book.
