Damn Shanna!.......2007-09-27
Shanna will drive you crazy....but if you reallllly think about it she may be somewhat right... Part of why I love Woodiwiss' work is because she has these great periods of tense, unacknowledged desire between her hero and heroine which make it all the sweeter when they finally do get together. It would be nice if I could find a book where she would switch up the formula and have us guessing which guy the heroine was going to fall for. Anyway, the hero in this book, Ruark, is hot, hot, hot! I wish I could find a guy like this--maybe not on death row though! So that is why Shanna is oh so weary of Ruark, but in the middle of the book you really want to kick her in the rump... Between the middle and the end of this book, when you are thinking about not finishing it, it finally picks up and the adventure kicks in full gear with new territory and scurvy pirates.
Whitefrosty.......2007-05-23
This is one of the best books I've ever read. I hated for it to end. I have read this book several times and it is definately a keeper. I love long and involved books that make you feel connected to the story. I read to get away from my troubles for a little while and there is nothing better than a Woodiwiss to accomplish that.
Best of romance novels.......2007-05-10
If you like romance novels, this may be the best one you'll read. The setting's lush, the characters are extremely well drawn, the story's original, the hero's to die for and the sensuality level's high. The mother of all beach reads.
THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ!.......2007-04-30
I first read this book when it was published back in the seventies and have read it many times since, and I'm sure that I will read it many more times in the future. The is the BEST book written by Kathleen Woodiwiss, by far, followed by the Wolf and the Dove. She has the ability to truly capture the essence and language of an era and transport you back into that time. I agree with another reviewer who found it amusing that some readers would want to shorten the book or skip over the historical parts. Obviously these readers enjoy the hastily written romances that are being cranked out today with little actual storyline to hold them together. These books can't compare with Shanna and are basically flimsy excuses to hop from one sex scene to another. I find it funny too how many of these reviewers want to bash Shanna for shunning Ruark the way she did in the first part of the story, however, how many of them would truly accept and immediately fall in love with a man they found languishing in a jail cell, filthy and crusted over, on the eve of being hanged for murder? Shanna is a beautifully written love story and one to savor for all time.
Not my favorite book.......2007-04-24
I will side with the minority on this one and say I did not particularly like it. I wish about 200 pages had been edited out of it. It isn't that any of it is bad, exactly, but it kept repeating the same scenes over and over: Shanna and Ruark meet in a mill, he says sweet things to her, she says terrible things to him, then later they have sex. Repeat in a cabin. Repeat on a beach. Repeat in the woods. Repeat in her bedroom. Repeat, repeat, repeat.
I guess if you are in love with these characters, and you want to live all the details of their lives along with them, and you don't mind wading though hundreds of pages of the same thing over an over, then it is a wonderful book. I found it tedious.
I didn't fall in love with the characters either. Shanna was self-centered and bratty. Her complete lack of compassion and guiltless betrayals make her a sociopath. Not that Ruark cared about that. He was attracted to her lithe 21-year-old body, her independence, and the challenge she presented. Which makes you wonder, when she's 40 and needy, will he still want her?
But Ruark's biggest problem is his unpronounceable name. How do you say it? Rork? Rark? Roo-ark? I kept stumbling over it -- very distracting.
Not worth the effort of wading through it, in my opinion.
Book Description
To-do: Stop the bad guys. Rescue the wizard. Find the perfect outfit for New Year’s Eve.
At last, Owen Palmer, the dreamboat wizard at Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., has conjured up the courage to get Katie Chandler under the mistletoe at the office holiday party. But just when it looks like Katie has found her prince, in pops her inept fairy godmother, Ethelinda, to throw a wand into the works. Ethelinda’s timing couldn’t be worse. A plot hatched by MSI’s rogue ex-employees, Idris and his evil fairy gal pal Ari, threatens to expose the company’s secrets–and the very existence of magic itself. Even worse, it could also mean the end of Katie’s happily-ever-after.
Now Katie and Owen must work side by side (but alas, not cheek to cheek) to thwart the villains’ plans. Braving black-magic-wielding sorceresses, subway-dwelling dragons, lovelorn frog princes, and even the dreaded trip to meet Owen’s parents at Christmas, Katie and her beau are in a battle to beat Idris at his own sinister game. All mischief and matters of the heart will come to a head at a big New Year’s Eve gala, when the crystal ball will drop, champagne will pour, and Katie will find herself truly spellbound.

Still a great series.......2007-10-08
I enjoyed this 3rd installment of the Katie Chandler Series just as much as the first two. I had a few laugh-out-loud moments, in particular when Katie's roommates held an intervention in the changing room of Victoria Secret (so she couldn't escape).
I am going to have to disagree with most of the other reviews, however, in saying that I DID enjoy the ending. It wasn't happy, but it felt necessary for character growth that we should see in the 4th and (hopefully!?) 5th book. The only disappointment is that I have to wait till April for the 4th one.
Book #3 of this series is a bit of a letdown.......2007-10-01
But it definitely opens the door for book #4. This book just didn't have the sparks flying between the characters as the previous two books did, and leaves several storylines undeveloped and vague. The fairy godmother storyline with Ethelinda and Katie was very disjointed and leaves the reader confused in several places as to what the fairy godmother actually does. Katie meets Owens parents but the reader never gets a true feeling as to how the parents feel about Katie. By the end of the book, the reader is left wondering how Owen even feels about Katie. Katie, who is usually such a straight-forward person, doesn't even talk with Owen before apparently leaving town for 'Owen's sake,' which will obviously hurt Owen and is atypical of Katie's personality. This is even possible because Owen has just disappeared from the office where he is ALWAYS present. Hopefully there's a follow-up book that brings these folks back together to resolve such odd behaviour for them.
What happened to my fairy tale ending?.......2007-09-10
Without revealing exactly what happens I would like to just say that the fairy tale didn't end "happily ever after". What gives? The story was just as much fun as the previous two but I was dissapointed with the ending. The whole reason I bought the book was to get my "romance fix" for the week. I feel a bit like Chandler let us all down on this one. I am so hoping there is another book in the series that will magically put us back on track after book 3 left us off at the wrong station.
Not quite as wonderful as the first two, but still a good read.......2007-08-22
Damsel under Stress picks up with the action right after the ending of Book #2. Idris is still out there threatening MSI ... but what exactly is his plan this time?
Owen and Katie get some "help" in the romance department from their own fairy godmother. Katie also gets to meet Owen's foster parents, which introduces a little mystery there as well, sure to be addressed in later installments of the series.
The series isn't quite as fresh, and the problems here not quite as interesting as in the first 2, but it's still a fun read. I love seeing Katie's friendships with her roommates expand and develop, and how they are getting sucked into Katie's world.
I'm looking forward to Book #4 ... when is it coming out?
stressing out?.......2007-07-30
This is a very cute series. I find it innocent and naive sounding, but worthy. Katie is innocent and naive. She's a Southern girl from Texas who still follows the old fashion rules of dating. In this third installment, she's finally dating the hero, only he's busy trying to save the business and putting the bad guy in his place. Katie goes through the insecurities of dating, wondering if she's saying, doing the right thing. Unfortunately, it all sounds a bit high-schoolish, but that's okay (remember, I said it was innocent and naive?) She also gets to meet his foster parents in this round. There were a few funny moments, but only a few and not all that funny. I still enjoyed the series and plan to read the next one.

DON’T MESS WITH HEXES
Katie Chandler had always heard that New York is a weird and wonderful place, but this small-town Texas gal had no idea how weird until she moved there. Everywhere she goes, she sees something worth gawking at and Katie is afraid she’s a little too normal to make a splash in the big city. Working for an ogre of a boss doesn’t help.
Then, seemingly out of the blue, Katie gets a job offer from Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc., a company that tricks of the trade to the magic community. For MSI, Katie’s ordinariness is an asset. Lacking any bit of magic, she can easily spot a fake spell, catch hidden clauses in competitor’s contracts, and detect magically disguised intruders. Suddenly, average Katie is very special indeed.
She quickly learns that office politics are even more complicated when your new boss is a real ogre, and you have a crush on the sexy, shy, ultra powerful head of the R&D department, who is so busy fighting an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic on the street that he seems barely to notice Katie. Now it’s up to Katie to pull off the impossible: save the world and–hopefully–live happily ever after.

Fun, easy, and refreshing.......2007-09-20
I really enjoyed this book. The premise was different and interesting. It was an easy, fun read, and it made me smile.
fun book, wonderful writing.......2007-09-07
It's great to run across a writer whose dialogue meshes with your own. Even when she describes a mundane everyday scene, I felt drawn in.
This is a really fun book about a woman's discovery that she could see magic, and her search for love. It's a fantasy story and romance. The heroine, Katie, is such a nice young woman, you really root for her. I highly recommend this book.
Hey, NY Times, you missed one.......2007-08-18
N Y Times reviewers missed a smiling breath of fresh air with this one. Not only is Ms. Swendson's concept unique and her story humorous, her writing is so transparent I often found myself ten pages further in the story without realizing I'd turned a single leaf of paper. Five Stars.
Refreshing and Fun.......2007-07-01
Enchanted, Inc. is a refreshing, fun story about a small-town Texas girl working as an administrative assistant for monster-boss Mimi in New York City. Her family, and sometimes even her roommates, feel she might not be cut out for the crazy New York life--and sometimes Katie herself wonders at the oddities she sees--people with wings, moving gargoyles, etc. Then one day, she's offered a new job--and finds out those crazy things she sees, and magic, are REAL. Meeting Katie, the company and her roommates takes about 1/4 or more of the book. The rest is about Katie's experiences in the company, the companies troubles with an evil former employee, and the resolution to said problem.
I really liked this book. I LOVED that Katie's superpower was being normal. Very awesome. The characters were decent--though some of the supporting ones were a little 2D, there is clearly room for them to develop more depth. The pacing of the book was pretty good and the action, if not harrowing, was definitely interesting. I really enjoyed Swendson's writing style and especially liked Katie and her approach to life. Cheers for an author who doesn't make her heroine a complete idiot over men and who doesn't fall into a trap of making things happen too fast. I will definitely read the next book and recommend this one to friends. Enjoy!
Cute and clean.......2007-06-13
This is a delightful read from start to finish, and now I need to get the sequels! The story is completely frothy, but has originality. I love how the magic folks find a totally non-magic person valuable---it's a great twist. The author keeps the tone light and witty, and thankfully never delves deeply into the dark side of things. What's more, both the plot and the language are clean enough that I can recommend this book to my teenage niece without worrying whether the content would offend her (or her mother). How refreshing!

A lot of fun.......2007-09-20
I really enjoyed this book. Good follow up to the first in the series. It had some nice character development. Looking forward to the next book!
great writing, but romance lost fizz.......2007-09-07
I really enjoy Shanna Swendson's writing. And the plot of the book is fantastic, literally and figuratively. In Katie's new job, she has been tasked with finding the spy/traitor within the company. Along the way, her own safety is threatened. The fun part is when her parents go to New York to visit her and she finds out that her Mother has the same ability as she does, to see magic.
The suspense with Owen, powerful wizard, is getting painful. All of his blushing and not coming right out to show interest in Katie drove me nuts.
Another I-can't-put-it-down installment.......2007-05-10
I'm glad that this series from Shanna Swendson is proving to be solid. I was very pleased to have another book I couldn't put down. Katie Chandler is deep into her work as MSI. Unfortunatly, company secrets at leaking out, leading to the assumption that a spy has either infiltrated the company, or one of their own loyal employees has turned against them. Katie's special talents will help to solve the puzzle, unless that traitor can get to her first.
Good book, relationship not convincing.......2007-03-28
The book was a good continuation from the first one, but the relationship between the main character and the man she liked was just not convincing. I don't want to give away any details, but I like a relationship in the books I read to progress throughout the book, but the one in this book was just sort of thrown into the end.
Smart, Witty & Inventive!.......2007-03-21
Enchanted, Inc. and Once Upon Stilettos weave an intricate and inventive story of magic, heroes and the battle of good versus evil. I love Shanna Swendson's take on Merlin and Arthur. This is a must read for anyone who wants to believe in magic and the power the most ordinary person. I have recommended this series to everyone I can think of!
Also, check out Shanna Swendson's website, her daily blog is always entertaining. According to the website, there will be five books in this series. I cannot wait for Damsel Under Stress coming May 1, 2007. Read the first two now so you can be ready for "Damsel"!

Marvel's Ultimate Bad Girl!.......2007-10-04
Shanna the She-Devil is quite simply the best Marvel Comics graphic novel I have read in a long time. Frank Cho does a great job writing and penciling the tale of Shanna(who is not the same Shanna from the Ka-Zar series)and a group of American soldiers trapped in a lost world filled with deadly dinosaurs and Shanna must work together with the soldiers to fight their way to survival. Please keep in mind that this book is NOT suitable for children and people with weak stomachs, for it has gory graphic violence, mild language and brief nudity.
Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Frank Cho's reinvention of the jungle queen. Shanna is found, presumably the result of an experiment, by an expedition. They realise there is something remarkable and that she is superhuman.
In the end, with her enhanced abilities she helps to save them from a marauding bunch of terrible lizards.
Eye-popping.......2006-11-20
Frank Cho knows women, and few comic-book artists today can draw them like he can. For a regular fix of Cho's women (and anthropomorphic animals, if that's your thing), check out "Shanna the She-Devil," an eye-popping miniseries collected by Marvel. Talk about your action-adventure delights. You've got a heavily-armed paramilitary group marooned on a remote island. You've got a Lost World environment, with dinosaurs and other giant predators galore. You've got copious death and maimings. You've got a lost Nazi fortress where scientists labored over illegal genetic experiments. You've got a plague, little medication and dwindling supplies.
And you've got Shanna, a biologically engineered killing machine with a body that ... well, while the dying won't be pleasant, at least the view will be nice as you go.
The nice thing about Cho's women is, they look real. Sure, they typically have a bra size (if they typically wore bras, that is) higher than most folks' IQs. But gravity works, and when Cho's women move, their bits move accordingly. They're also appropriately muscled; no teenyboppers with a waifish bod, spindly limbs and strength like a rhino here. Shanna has muscle definition, and when she lifts a velociraptor and hurls it over a tree, her arms and legs are thick enough to make it look possible.
If you haven't caught on yet, the art in Shanna is extraordinary. And not just because Shanna wears loincloths, either; the characters and settings are realistic and expressive, and the dinosaurs just rock. I mean, there's teeth and claws and blood and wow! Oh, and the story's good, too.
No, really. The Lost World plot isn't the most original tale in the world, but heck, you rarely go wrong when you throw dinosaurs, Nazis and superstrong supermodels into the pot and stir. It's told well, with interesting plot and character development. I mean, I'd read this story even if Shanna weren't so, well, Shanna.
But I'm glad she is.

Renowned babe artist Frank Cho reinvented Shanna the She-Devil with this pulpy 2005 Marvel Knights miniseries. Here, Shanna is an abandoned Nazi experiment, super-powerful, super-sexy, and barely clothed. The scientists who discover Shanna and take her back to their camp also make the mistake of uncovering a deadly virus, and it's up to Shanna to escort the still-healthy to recover the cure. Problem is, hundreds of raptors and other deadly dinosaurs stand in their way. The seven-issue series ultimately doesn't amount to much, but the action and visuals are exciting and fast-moving. --David Horiuchi

Jurassic Boobs.......2007-03-29
While Frank Cho's art delivers, his story does not. The plot is prosaic, the dialog weak and the characters stereotypical and one dimensional. I have never reviewed a bad book for Amazon but this one comes close.
Having said that, if I had it to do over, I'd buy this book again.
Why? Because of the art. I am not immune to feminine pulchritude but there is more than that here. There are dinosaurs. Man-eating, body-chomping predators.
And of course there is Shanna.
Frank Cho is one of a handful of artists who can make the female form high art but (there's always a but) I actually got tired of having boobs in my face...and not any boobs - huge, collossal, magnificent boobs. In fact, they are so prevalent that it seemed like subliminal messaging..."We're in great danger here (boobs)...we could be killed (boobs)...you get the idea.
Still, I did buy it and I am glad - but not for the boobs. Seriously.
If I was 15 again I'd probably give it 5 stars.
Great story. Great art........2007-01-04
Combine an action-adventure story worthy of Edgar Rice Burroughs with a protagonist right out of a pin-up magazine and you have Shanna the She-Devil. It's a great re-imagining of the character. Cho's artwork is stunning!
Move over Tarzan, Shanna's got more of everything........2006-08-15
Frank Cho's artistry is top notch. He breaks the trendy mold on how to draw the female form in action in today's comics and graphic novels. The story is far fetched but Jurassic park made money for a reason.
Beautiful art and a fun story.......2006-03-24
This is a great buy for anyone who knows and enjoys Cho's art. He has stated that he loved doing this series because it was full of two of his favorite subjects- hot women and dinosaurs- and that joy shows on every page.
The story is exactly waht it means to be: fun. There are intriguing bits of character development and good dialogue throughout, but don't look for a penetrating analysis of the human condition here. This is a story about a Cho Babe slugging it out with dinos.
This hardcover edition is beatifully bound like Marvel's other Premiere HCs, and in this case the content merits the format.
Better Than Expected.......2006-02-24
I expected the art in Frank Cho's book to be top notch and it met those expectations. The story, however, in "Shanna, The She-Devil" exceeded my expectations.
While it may not be a wholly original story, I do not mind that. Like many things, I don't mind something unoriginal as long as it is done well, and "Shanna" falls into this category.
The book is surprisingly less titillating than I thought it would be and no more pornographic than the typical comic book (or entertainment product for that matter). And I thought that Mr. Cho achieves the apparent goal of making Shanna somewhat ingenuous despite her sexuality and initial coldness.
The relationship between Doc and Shanna is intriguing and I liked that Cho focuses on Doc's interest in Shanna's morality (or lack thereof) instead of her carnality.
One of the curiosities of the book is an apparent unresolved plot thread involving Doc and another character. (And this apparent unresolved thread helps suggest that "Shanna" was meant to be an ongoing series.) But this apparently unresolved thread actually adds to the story. Because as is with real life, things don't always end neatly and you cannot control what happens. A second curiosity is Mr. Cho's apparent interest in graphic death scenes (including the repeated depiction of dismembered eyeballs). This is a minor drawback.
"Shanna, The She-Devil" is a well-written story for adults. And if it was shortened into a finite story instead of an ongoing series, that only served to make it better. For some stories are better when they have a definitive ending.

Party Surprise.......2004-10-10
Shanna's little brother Shane is celebrating his birthday and the gang has planned a party filled with colorful hats, toys, and presents. In addition, there are cards made out of the most common shapes and a fun treasure hunt for Shane to complete. As they hear Shane nearing the room, they all hide and then jump from their hiding places and yell "surprise" and the party begins.
What a fun and enjoyable read for first readers and parents who enjoy reading to their children. Though my two-year-old cannot read, she enjoyed the rhythms and rhymes, as well as colorful images drawn to match this story. This is a must read for all young children.

Customer Reviews:
Bravo for Shanna's Show.......2004-06-22
Shanna's Princess Show is great fun to read. We first picked up this book last summer. It regained popularity when the animated features on Playhouse Disney began rolling this June. Both the book and TV versions show Shanna, with large, expressive eyes and plenty of sass. Little brother Shane (same name as the illustrator, by the way) and stuffed critters Dinah-saurus, Ducky, and Tiger complete the quirky ensemble cast. Each story is told in catchy rhyming verse printed both in bold, easy-to-read font and speech balloons (like in comic strips). The book gives 5 clues, the TV show only 3. I like the problem solving skills it develops as it challenges readers to figure out what Shanna's occupation could be - a princess, ballerina, teacher, or doctor. The story also encourages creativity. My girls, ages 4.5 and 2.5, are often inspired to put on their own shows.
