Book Description
Chris McKenna gladly escaped the crowds of Yosemite to work as the new Search and Rescue in tiny Sierra City, nestled just west of Lake Tahoe. A loner by nature, she didn't mind the seclusion of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Jessie Stone, a successful but reclusive writer, is haunted by memories of her childhood and finally returns to Sierra City after sixteen years of estrangement from her mother. The odd assortment of residents of this small mountain town brings them together but it is Annie Stone, a woman Chris has grown to admire and a woman Jessie still feels hatred for, that binds the two. Through lies and deception, they still cannot deny the growing attraction that will brighten both their lives . . . if only they will allow it. As Chris fights for her life in a winter blizzard, Jessie comes to terms with her past and her mother, finally accepting the love that Chris willingly offers her.

Why Did I Wait So Long To Read It???.......2007-02-22
Although Gerri Hill is one of my most favorite authors, Sierra City sat on my shelf for a long time before I decided to tackle it. What was I thinking? What excuse did I have for ignoring it for so long? I don't know, but I'll never do it again. This was a fantastic book with a great story, lovable characters, and a memorable setting. I'm sorry I waited so long to enjoy it.
Chris McKenna is a search and rescue forest ranger who has recently relocated to relatively-untouched Sierra City from the busy Yosemite National Forest. Her goal was to get back to a simpler life and to leave the hustle and bustle of thousands of tourists behind. Chris is a big fan of author Jessica Stone and has fallen in love with her cover photo, but she doesn't have much of a love life otherwise. As Chris starts getting to know her new community, she meets the reclusive Annie Stone and they become fast friends. Chris discovers Annie's estranged daughter is Jessica Stone and subsequently gets mixed in more than she can (almost) handle.
Jessica Stone has spent many years writing successful novels in which the mother always meets an untimely and grueling demise. This stems from her hatred of her own mother, a hatred she can't seem to move past despite seeing countless therapists over the years. She is finally convinced to go back to Sierra City and confront her mother. Posing as someone else, the novelist rents a cabin next door to Chris. Chris recognizes Jessica from her picture, but also respects her need for privacy and doesn't say anything to Anna. Chris and Jessica begin to fall in love, but there seem to be many roadblocks keeping them apart.
Time, open communication, and undeniable love finally bring these two women together in a compelling story with many different levels of complexity. Once I picked up this book, I couldn't stop reading until it was done. This is a masterpiece that will forever remain in my personal collection.
a book that you can't put down.......2007-01-06
It's a book that I've read at least 3 times now.
I loved this book bravo.......2006-09-10
It's hot - it's remote - it's steamy attractions but still a great story line. Best lesbian book I've read this year.
Wilderness Quiet.......2006-07-31
Hill does a great job with character development and the visualization of the scenery was excellent.
I liked the fact that Jessie and her Mom come to terms with life.
A good read.
Another Hill Page Turner.......2006-04-11
The plot of this book is as described elsewhere.
Hill creates characters you find yourself wanting to know in real life - strong, passionate, compassionate, tender and a good friend. She also sets her books, for the most part, outside big cities - in areas that you wish you lived in but don't. The setting here is, as in other of her books, one of the characters. When Chris has to rescue a skier in a blizzard, you can feel the bitter cold seeping into your bones making you wish you had a fire in the fireplace or, as I did, turning up the electric blanket to get warm.
The one thing that I have trouble with this book is how quickly Jessie deals with her childhood trauma. Friends that suffered similar trauma say that it takes more than two weeks isolated in an apartment or even two months to deal with and some of them say that it is an lifelong issue. Granted we don't know if Jessie continues to deal with it for the rest of her life, but the initial shock was over for her way too quickly.
Once again, Hill has written a book that may keep you up reading just one more chapter long past the time you should have turned out your light .
Book Description
When Vincent Gambuzzo, the not-so-bright proprietor of the Tiffany Gentleman's Club in Panama City, Florida, loses his business playing poker, his headliner, exotic dancer Sierra Lavotini, faces a crisis. But he's in jail, charged with murdering a man in a shootout at the end of that same disastrous poker game. Can Sierra prove Vincent innocent, help her fellow out-of-work dancers, and manage to make next month's trailer payment without a job? With the help of her neighbor Raydean, her on-again boyfriend, Panama City Homicide Detective John Nailor, and her "uncle," "Big Moose" Lavotini of the New Jersey syndicate, of course she can, and it adds up to another fantastic ride in this hilarious and sexy series.AUTHORBIO: Nancy Bartholomew is the author of three previous Sierra Lavotini mysteries and two Maggie Reid mysteries. Bring Back Sierra!.......2007-06-04
I read the other three books in this series a few years ago and just got around to picking up a used copy of this one. And I'm disappointed -- not in the story, but that there's no more Sierra!
I don't know why the author stopped this series. I've read her other books and while they're good, they can't hold a candle to this series. The characters, the storytelling, the mystery -- everything put together makes it a book you don't want to put down, and a series you don't want to see left hanging when there's still so much story to tell.
Bring back Sierra!
Unique heroine..........2006-10-02
Sierra Lavotini is a great character. This is a wonderful series. I have them as a keeper on my shelves. The striper and the cop were just becoming a great couple. I was so looking forward to their relationship developing! And the loose ends that this book has----so many unanswered questions!
I wish that Nancy would finish this series _ I know that there are many other readers that have the same wish. Looking forward to the rest of Sierra's story!
Stephanie Plum and Sierra Lavotini- Twins seperated at Birth???.......2005-08-10
Fantastic. Nancy, you have outdone yourself! I did not think I would ever find a series I loved as much as the Stephanie Plum series, but you have changed my mind. I liked the first book, but as the series continued and the writing improved and the characters developed, I was hooked beyond hooked! Please Please Please write another Sierra novel!
Where is Sierra?.......2003-08-15
I love this series of books. My only concern is that I have not been able to find any new books in this series since this book was published. Try reading these books in public and you'll get funny looks because you can't stop yourself from laughing. Does anyone know what happened to this series? I truly hope that there are more coming.
HEADS UP this book is a HIT...!.......2002-08-30
The Sierra Lavotini series is a must for anyone who has NO LIMIT when it comes to taking a GAMBLE on a well-written, smart and funny romantic suspense. Here's the DEAL: Sierra is an UNDERDOG amateur detective who happens to have a TOP PAIR, a real stacked DECK, and strips at a HOUSE with a GUNSHOT STRAIGHT when it comes to murder. Sierra, unlike the other exotic dancers, doesn't FOLD when it comes to solving the murders; she ANTES up, which RAISES the Panama City Police Department's frustration in solving the crime, especially a FIVE CARD STUD detective named John Nailor. I'm not BLUFFING when I say take the CHANCE on STRIP POKER; it's a SURE THING that you'll hit the JACK POT...the ODDS aren't against you.:)

a lovely book.......2006-03-31
This book has been around for a while (published in 1990) but it is a wonderful and intriguing topic -- how wild birds manage to find places to live and thrill in the city. Beautiful illustrations help to tell the story of all the amazing places and ways that city birds build their nests. Text is rich in information. Any child, young or old, will find this book fascinating, but a city-dwelling child will particularly enjoy it.
great for young animal lovers.......2000-07-22
This book was featured on Reading Rainbow. It explains with detailed illustrations how birds live in the city. I found it an interesting subject, and so did my 18 month old child. I am sure a child of any age will enjoy it.
Book Description
The Philadephia Inquirer named Nancy Bartholomew's first Sierra Lavotini novel, The Miracle Strip, one of the year's best mysteries and Romantic Times calls Sierra "a magnificent, take-no-prisoners heroine." Now, the exotic dancer again proves herself a pro as she strips down to her G-string and searches for a killer.... The only thing hotter than the supercharged engines at the Dead Lakes Motor Speedway is the special appearance by Sierra and her friend Ruby Diamond. But before the day ends, Sierra will be pinched black and blue, seeing red when she spots her cop-boyfriend kissing another woman-and shocked white when she stumbles upon Ruby's dead body. Now, to catch a killer, Sierra must risk her hide and-even more dangerous- expose her vulnerable heart....
Customer Reviews:
Five Stars for Stripper Turned Sleuth Sierra Lavotini!.......2007-05-15
Sierra Lavotini is an exotic dancer "living large" in Panama City Florida. Sierra is the headliner at the Vinny Gambuzzo's Tiffany Gentleman's Club. She and her friend, fellow dancer Ruby Diamond, are asked to make a special appearance at a nearby race track, the Dead Lakes Motor Speedway. When Ruby is found dead behind a dumpster at the raceway, Sierra kicks her investigation skills into high gear to find out who has murdered her friend.
The back of this book compares Sierra Lavotini to Stephanie Plum, Janet Evanovich's feisty New Jersey bounty hunter. I have usually found books that compare themselves to the Stephanie Plum books to fall short, but that is not the case with this book! The characters are funny and unique. Readers get to know Vinny, Sierra's smarmy boss at the club, as well as her borderline-wacko neighbor Raydean.
This hilarious mystery was the first one I have read by Nancy Bartholomew, but it certainly won't be my last! I highlly recommend this entertaining story to all mystery fans.
Another winner.......2002-08-08
Sierra Lavotini is the headliner of the Tiffany Gentlemen's Club in Panama City, Florida. After her debut in Nancy Bartholomew's MIRACLE MILE, she is back to make us laugh and smile in her latest mystery. In DRAG STRIP, Ruby Lee Diamond has recently moved out of her parent's house in Wewahitchka to work at Panama City. Sierra takes Ruby under her wing and shows her the ropes of her profession.
In order to promote his gentleman's club, Vincent Gambuzzo sends Sierra and Ruby to the local drag strip to pose with the drivers competing at the day's races. While working there Sierra sees Detective John Nailor in the hands of another woman (the nerve!) and he is doing everything he can to avoid bumping into her. During that same day she overhears Ruby arguing with someone and then being beaten to death. Sierra arrives too late to stop it and the killer manages to escape. It affects her really hard because she saw Ruby as a friend and she is unable to confide in John Nailor since he is on the run from the cops. Lavotini is not going to take it sitting down and she will do what it takes to find out the truth. In the end she will be involved with religious zealots, organized crime and family secrets.
Ms. Bartholomew has another winner with this second book in the Strip series. Sierra is a likeable character who is smart, resourceful and is grounded by the unconditional love given to her by her friends and family. There is a lot of humor written in this book that does not divert from the main storyline. An exotic dancer was murdered and there is a killer tracking Sierra to try and find out what she knows. Several scenes could have been insulting if written by other authors but Nancy Bartholomew is a class act. She never belittles her characters and her books are a joy to read. It will be a pleasure to continue reading her next book in the series, FILM STRIP. She writes good and light books meant to be enjoyed and not taken seriously.
Fantastic! In the race with Evanovich!.......2000-11-28
I loved this book! I read it in one day. Drag Strip offered non-stop action, crazy, lovable characters, mystery, romance and a gutsy heroine with a unique career. 'Just one more chapter'is something you can't do with this author's books. Each chapter ends with action that means you have to read the next and the next until you find yourself closing the back cover with a smile on your face. I am eagerly waiting for the third book in the Sierra Lavotini series to arrive from Amazon. Nancy Bartholomew is already good and with each book she gets better. I'm sure by her fourth book, she will surpass Evanovich - at least in my opinion. So if you have already read Evanovich's last book and you are looking for something to pass the time until her next one comes out, pick up any of Nancy Bartholomew's books. Guaranteed if Evanovich and Bartholomew's next books come out at the same time, you'll read Nancy Bartholomew's book first!
Sierra dances her way into your heart........2000-11-04
In this, the 2nd of the Sierra Lavotini mystery series, we find our intrepid exotic dancer/amateur sleuth with another dead body on her hands and herself just a tad bit closer to snagging Det.John Nailor.
Sierra still can outdance the best of them and still has a penchant for getting herself involved in murder investigations. This time, her protégée Ruby Diamond meets a heinous death at the local drag strip. Fingers point to several of the drag strip regulars, Sierra's boss insists she call in her pseudo-uncle Moose, Ma & brother Al show up to lend a hand and Raydean continues in her ongoing paranoia against Flemish aliens. And what, Sierra wants to know, was Det. Nailor doing standing over the body of Ruby?
As things start to get heavy, Sierra knows she's in big trouble, but risks her life and her heart to help solve Ruby's murder and get John out of the mess he's gotten himself into.
The one recurring character I despise, is Carla - Nailor's ex. One of these times I'd really like to see this nasty human get what's coming to her and I'd sure like it to be Sierra who dishes it out.
The author's next book in this series, Film Strip, is in my short stack on-deck circle of books to read. I only hope Ms.Bartholomew doesn't end the series before Sierra and John reach nirvana.
Sierra Lavotini, Queen of the Blond Amazons.......2000-10-24
I've read both The Miracle Strip and Drag Strip, and I am hooked on these books. The characters come to life more in each book, the sleuthing gets more sophisticated, the plots better and better. Sierra is someone that I would never know in real life, but would want to be friends with if I happened across her. Her "take no prisoners" attitude combines with an un-apologetic love for exotic dancing. Her large Italian family Philadelphia upbringing offers good comic contrast, but also shows how she is so well grounded in her life. No victim, Sierra. Throw in a handsome single cop and you've got a great, fun read.
Book Description
Exotic dancer Sierra Lavotini's latest brainstorm to help the Tiffany Gentleman's Club turn a profit is a disaster. Sierra, headliner for the classiest strip joint in Panama City, Florida, and the club's owner, Vincent Gambuzzo, invited a gallery of porn actresses to guest star on the Tiffany stage. It's a gutsy plan, considering that most of these silicone-enhanced creatures don't have much in the way of true talent. As Sierra likes to say, at the Tiffany dancing consists of more than TA working a pole. Still, under Sierra's firm guidance, the venture seems to be raking in the cash. At least until a sniper begins taking exception-starting with Venus, who is shot and killed. Sierra takes a bullet in the, ahem, posterior region during the attack, and would like nothing more than to forget about the whole thing and convalesce with the help of her on-again boyfriend, Homicide Detective John Nailor. But when the investigation hones in on Marla, another Tiffany girl, Sierra is forced to focus her energy on finding the real killer. No small task, considering the interest of the local "organization" in the situation, even once Sierra enlists the help of her landlady Pat; Raydean, her psychotic neighbor; and her oldest brother Francis.Steamy romance, intrigue, laugh-out-loud humor, mob bosses, and Sierra's overprotective Italian family-it's all here in Nancy Bartholomew's latest hilarious tale.
Customer Reviews:
Keep them coming.......2002-08-12
Sierra Lavotini is back and the story is even better than ever. Someone is targeting the dancers at the Tiffany Gentlemen's Club in Panama City. At first the police think that Sierra's nemesis, Marla, is trying to stop the competition by killing Venus Lovemotion and Frosty Licks. Sierra is not convinced that even though she hates Marla's guts she does not think that she is responsible and will do her best to find out.
This book is even more fun and the author provides more information about Sierra mainly why she moved from Philadelphia to work at Panama City. In DRAG STRIP we met one of Sierra's four brothers and here we meet another brother. He helps Sierra work the case by pretending to be Little Moose Lavotini, a well-known mobster. As far as Sierra knows she has no relation to Moose Lavotini but she uses this `familial' connection to help her control her boss, Vincent Gambuzzo, and to put fear at the person she believes to be the killer. She provides a unique touch to her investigation and at the same time helps her police boyfriend, Detective John Nailor. The book is filled with many laugh out loud moments and provides a nice twist at the end of this book. STRIP POKER is going to be a lot of fun.
The "Stephanie Plum" Of Florida.......2001-12-06
Nancy Bartholomew has done it again. In this third book of the Sierra Lavotini series, the action and intrigue is non-stop.
Sierra, who claims to have "family" ties, is the classy, headlining exotic dancer at The Tiffany. When a pair of visiting stippers get gunned down and her co-worker, Marla the Bomber, is arrested as the primary suspect, Sierra must spring into action to get to the bottom of the crime.
All of the regulars are back, including the crazy, yet irreplaceable, scene-stealing Raydean. Sierra's love interest with top cop John Nailor also heats up in this book, so watch out for the sparks. Bartholomew does a fantastic job of meshing all of these diverse characters together into one intersting mystery. The dialogue and scenarios are quite funny, and this humor peppers the already excellent, cohesive writing.
This is a very entertaining book, and is sure to make you laugh out loud several times, let alone, flipping the pages in a rapid motion. FILM STRIP is another excellent effort.
Sierra Peaks in FILM STRIP.......2001-10-11
...Since I'm writing this review, you know I believe Nancy Bartholomew's FILM STRIP works. It is another fun novel about those adult entertainers at the Tiffany in Panama City, Florida. Venus Lovemotion and Frosty Licks are two big name porn stars brought in to boost the gentlemen's club's profits. Both end up dead, and we know who finds herself struggling to solve the murder. Yes, Sierra Lavotini is on the case, and this case is loaded with fun. There is even a little fun for Sierra to share with her detective friend John Nailor. FILM STRIP is a fun read and sassy read, if you are looking for a fun and sassy read. Even Fluffy has a good time.
Another Winner.......2001-01-07
In FILM STRIP, Nancy Bartholomew continues a winning streak with exotic dancer, Sierra Lavotini's amateur murder investigation. And this latest venture is a real pain. Literally. Poor Sierra. All she wants is for the Tiffany club to rake in the cash in order to stay afloat, thereby ensuring her financial security. Doesn't look like it's going to happen, though, as one by one the invited guest dancers are picked off. Much to Sierra's chagrin, the shooter's aim on one occasion is a bit off and Sierra ends up with a huge pain in the ----- well, you'll have to read the book. Sierra's brother, Francis, arrives to help his sister stay out harm's way and ends up in a position he'd never even dreamed of.
The author brings in all the characters we've come to know and love: Raydean and Pat, Marla and Vincent, and of course, hunky police detective John Nailor. And we finally get a verbal 'glimpse' of the infamous Big Moose Lavotini.
The dialogue is fast and witty, the characters quirky and interesting, and the love scenes are--whoa!--hot!! What more could one ask for? I'm eagerly awaiting the next in the series, STRIP POKER.
A juicy work.......2000-11-22
Although she agreed to work with the visiting porn star, Venus Lovemotion, Tiffany's Gentleman Club headliner Sierra Lavotini expected a pain in the butt. However, she never anticipated that the ache would come from a bullet that killed Venus as it passed through her body and penetrated one of Sierra's covered cheeks.
A second homicide of a visiting superstar of the velvet circuit occurs. Panama City homicide detective John Nailor uncovers evidence that points towards Sierra's local rival, Marla as the killer. Although she cannot stand Marla, who is a bigger pain to her butt than a bullet, Sierra decides her peer is too stupid to have pulled off the two murders. Sierra decides to assist John, hoping to also land him in her bed, during the intermission of solving the case.
The third Lavotini mystery (see MIRACLE STRIP and DRAG STRIP) is a very humorous, satirical work that strips bare the essence of the amateur sleuth sub-genre. The story line starts off with an amusing shot in the dark and continues its funny plot until the tale is finished. However, don't be fooled by the droll plot, the murder investigation is well written and the support cast (especially Sierra's investigative aides) brings the Florida resort town to life. John is a wonderful cop, but when this tale is stripped to the bone, like the previous two novels, the headliner remains Sierra.

A Sexy Stripper-Sleuth Bares It All to Catch a Cold-Blooded Killer
The whip-smart Sierra Lavotini is the hottest act on Panama City's strip scene. She's the headliner at the bare-all bar, the Tiffany Club. Besides her bodacious business, Sierra's life is fairly simple. And that's the way she likes it. But when a good friend, Denise, seeks her help, Sierra's life takes a murderous turn.
Seems Denise's furry friend Arlo has just been "dognapped." From the pricey ransom note, Sierra figures there's much more to this case than meets the eye. And her hunch proves correct when a quick trip to Denise's apartment reveals a fresh corpse. Sierra can't shake the feeling that her friend isn't telling her the whole story--especially after Denise turns up missing and the body count continues to rise. Determined to reveal the naked truth, Sierra tackles this steamy caper head on, digging in her stiletto heels until the dangerous job is done.

Quirky Stripper Makes Me Laugh!.......2006-07-27
Fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum Series may also enjoy the Strip Series by Nancy Bartholomew. Sierra Lavotini is an exotic dancer (yes, a stripper) with a great heart and great attitude. Together with her chihuahua Fluffy and her crazy neighbor Raydean she's on a hunt to find a missing dog and a missing friend.
Sierra need more character development but it's a good first novel. Good enough for me to continue the series.
1st in the series is good, but as they go, they get great!.......2005-08-10
In the spirit of Janet Evanovich, the "Strip" series by Nancy Batholomew is laugh out loud fun. Not unlike Evanovich's Plum series, Nancy's writing improves with each book in the series and I was addicted after #2. The heroine Sierra Lavotini is a "real woman" not some overdone dream woman, women of any age can relate to Sierra. If you want a book that you don't have to think too much about, that simply allows you to escape through humor, this is a great series of books. ****
A decent first book, but improvement is needed.......2004-02-18
As a first book, Miracle Strip is not horrible, but it would not compel me to buy another book in the series. The protagonist, stripper Sierra Lavotini, never seems to have justifiable motivation for her actions. She recklessly starts investigating the disappearance of her friend, even when it becomes clear that her friend has been lying to her and has been mixed up in some sort of drug deal gone wrong. Like some hardboiled PI, she never tells the police all she knows, although her motivation for witholding information is never clear. She does one stupid thing after another and you can't figure out what she has to gain by acting like that. The book was made more irritating because Sierra, the narrator, uses poor grammar on an infrequent enough basis that it just seems like a narrative trick, to make her background more "real." The portrayal of Sierra as a stripper didn't ring true, and the strip club is too abstract and uninvolving. Nevertheless, as the author polishes her craft this series may turn into something really worthwhile.
Not quite Evanovich.......2003-10-30
A lot of comparisons were being made between this series and the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. While there are some similarities, this book didn't quite grab me like an Evanovich book.....which I will normally read in one setting! Sierra's poor use of the English language was very distracting to me as a reader. I guess my English teachers pounded certain rules into my head a little too much!
Cheap entertainment.......2002-09-08
Fans of more skillful Florida mysteries such as those by John D. MacDonald or Carl Hiaasen will be left wanting by this tepid first novel by Nancy Bartholomew. Her Philly-born exotic dancer heroine, Sierra Lavotini, is a mass of contradictions, but for all the facets Bartholomew tries to build into her, she remains a warmed-over knock-off of Hiaasen's sleuthing stripper from
. Sierra's poor English makes for a distracting narrative voice and, unfortunately, Panama City is never more than a flat backdrop for the plot, which could just as easily be set in Myrtle Beach, Padre Island, Daytona Beach, or any one of a number of other southern spring break venues.

After reading the first volume, it was hard tobelieve that there were so many more great people stories about the historical Sierra mountains: miners, badmen (and women), and people of great achievements. A well-written, fun set of stories all true.

"Sierra Stories:True Tales of Tahoe".......1999-12-08
We bought both books after hearing Mark McLaughlin lecture at an Elderhostel in Lake Tahoe. They are short, factual stories brimming with historical information presented in extremely interesting manner. They are as fascinating to read as he is in his lectures and we highly recommend them.
Sierra Stories: True Tales of Tahoe.......1999-11-23
A great read! McLaughlin captures his reader immediately and holds on throughout each story. I especially enjoy the way he writes about the strength of the women in the old west. He has an obvious respect for their trials and accomplishments. Refreshing! I lent my copy to a coworker who took it on her family vacation to read aloud during long rides in the car. She said the entire family enjoyed it (husband and 2 kids - aged 10 and 15) and they're looking forward to reading Volume II on their next trip.
Well-written, fascinating, true, very informative, fun.......1999-11-19
A collection of true tales of the people who made the Sierra Mountains of California so interesting in the last 200 years. McLaughlin has chosen his tales well and shows great skill in crafting them so they are fun to read and informative to boot.
