Book Description
In the life of Precious Ramotswe–a woman duly proud of her fine traditional build–there is rarely a dull moment, and in the latest installment in the universally beloved No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series there is much happening on Zebra Drive and Tlokweng Road. Mma Ramotswe is experiencing staffing difficulties. First Mr. J.L.B. Mate-koni asks to be put in charge of a case involving an errant husband. But can a man investigate such matters as successfully as the number one lady detective can? Then she has a minor falling-out with her assistant, Mma Makutsi, who decides to leave the agency, taking the 97 percent she received on her typing final from the Botswana Secretarial College with her.
Along the way, Mma Ramotswe is asked to investigate a couple of tricky cases. Will she be able to explain an unexpected series of deaths at the hospital in Mochudi? And what about the missing office supplies at a local printing company? These are the types of questions that she is uniquely well suited to answer.
In the end, whatever happens, Mma Ramotswe knows she can count on Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, who stands for all that is solid and true in a shifting world. And there is always her love for Botswana, a country of which she is justifiably proud.

Another triumph for McCall Smith.......2007-09-28
I eagerly awaited this new installment in the series, and was not disappointed, although there were a few parts in this novel that moved slowly. The situations in this novel seemed real, the types of human relationship issues we all deal with on a daily basis. Things are not always lovely, people do disagree and doubt one another, and this novel revealed this underside of humanity. I hope this series will continue, as I am anxious to find out more about Mme Makutsi and her upcoming marriage, and also about the kids, who appeared only briefly in this novel. If you have not listened to the audio, run to your public library and check it out. Lisette Lecat's wonderful voice has gotten me through many long and tedious road trips.
The Best So Far!.......2007-09-20
My husband and I listened to this on our trips to my doctor and we really enjoyed this one. It has more than one subplot, and held our attention. As always, the narrator is wonderful. This series is like comfort food - always satisfying even if it doesn't have the most substance. No profanity, no real violence--just great entertainment.
Another charmer.......2007-08-28
What can I say? This is another charming installment in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. I wish Mma Ramotswe and Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni really existed so I could meet them. At any rate, this series makes me want to visit Botswana. If you liked the other books, you will definitely like this one. If you are starting out, read them in order from the beginning.
Earthy Wisdon.......2007-08-26
Close to the earth, close to what's real and true (if there is ever a 'true'). Very personal to me as I lived in Botswana some years ago for a few years. An authentic rendition of the ways of living and the general 'feeling' of Botswana. I have all 7 of the series and re-read the previous 6 before reading the newest one. I loved the immersion. Mma Ramotswe is wise. Her character is not unique to Botswana but Botswana offers a fine ambience for developing and displaying wisdom. Over the coming years I intend to re-read the series frequently.
Not the best in the series..........2007-08-24
This was a surprise eighth installment to a series that was supposed to end with seven. While I am a big fan of the series, I found this particular book to be disappointing for a number of reasons, most of them related to the plot.
As is his usual set-up, McCall Smith starts a series of mini-mysteries to be solved by the ever-resourceful Mma Ramotswe and/or her colorful assistant, Mma Makutsi. In this book, several characters get their own mystery to solve, some with more success than others. Some of the plot lines break down, only to be gathered up hastily with weak explanations. There is also a lack of continuity between some of the story lines.
While the subplots have some definite leaks, the author's painting of the characters continues to be what makes these books so good. The reader learns a bit more about Mr. JLB Matekoni, although the mystery behind his depression remains as such. Mma Makutsi continues to have enjoyable dialogues with her shoes as she prepares for the next phase in her life. The children, Motholeli and Puso, make only brief appearances, as does Phuti Radiphuti.
There are still a few open loops in the tale of Mma Ramotswe and cohorts, so the author might not be finished with the series. Should there be a next installment, however, I hope that McCall Smith finds a fresh supply of creative plot lines.

Book Description
Getting a young child to go to sleep and stay asleep is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. Yet many parents resign themselves to enduring years of exhaustion. Practical help is not easy to find, and much of the available advice stresses letting even very young babies "cry it out," an option that is not comfortable for many parents. Kim West, known to her clients as The Sleep Lady®, has developed an alternative and effective approach that is gentler on both parent and child. West emphasizes that sleep is a learned skill and explains how parents can teach children to sleep, even at an early age. She starts with newborns, showing parents how to avoid sleep problems from the beginning. And she has solutions for older babies and children who have developed poor bedtime, nighttime, or nap time habits. The Sleep Lady methodincluding a gentle, practical, step-by-step program called The Sleep Lady Shufflehas proven effective for hundreds of families. West has spent more than a decade successfully teaching parents how to help their children sleep soundly and independently through the night. She provides specific, achievable guidelines that work, while also taking into account the values, lifestyles, and parenting styles unique to each family. Most parents who adopt The Sleep Lady Shuffle see dramatic improvements in a few weeks, if not days. Good Night, Sleep Tight contains age-specific chapters from birth through five years old, in which West succinctly outlines what action to take; discusses important developmental changes; provides sample waking, feeding, and napping schedules; advises how to use The Sleep Lady Shuffle; and lays out common problems and solutions. Included throughout are real-life testimonies and anecdotes from parents West has assisted. Good Night, Sleep Tight also discusses co-sleeping, bedtime strategies for twins and siblings, and dealing with nightmares and illnesses. West even offers tips on how to minimize sleep disruption when families travel or experience other breaks in routine. Essential reading for any tired parent, or any expectant parent who wants to avoid the pitfalls of sleeplessness, Good Night, Sleep Tight offers a practical, gentle, easy-to-follow remedy that will work for all families in need of nights of peaceful slumber.
Customer Reviews:
Not "Gentle".......2007-10-10
I was told that this was an alternative to the CIO method but it really isn't. You just stay in the room while they scream instead of leaving. It even suggests you keep a towel handy because your child may get so upset that he/she throws up, but if that happens you are still not supposed to pick them up. I don't consider that "gentle".
A good mix of sleep strategies.......2007-09-21
I first read Babywise, which a friend had given me. We started on a flexible schedule with feedings about every three hours. This was very helpful and a good start, but after reading some negative things about the book, I wanted to read some others. There are so many different theories on sleeping and feeding! I found Good Night, Sleep Tight and really liked it because it seemed to be a good mix of the different theories. There are a few main components that almost every sleep book I've read recommends, including having a bedtime routine, putting the baby down drowsy but awake, and creating a sleep friendly environment. This book begins with those basic components and gives you additional information and resources. I like that it gives some guidance as to what a typical schedule might be like, what you might expect, etc. It's also nice to see that what you're experiencing is very normal and that there are things you can do about it. My son started sleeping through the night at about 3 months. Naps are still a little difficult to settle him down for and I just pulled the book out again to get some advice on making naps a little easier. There is a whole section of suggestions. I don't think this is a cry it out book. She creates a middle ground between letting your baby cry and responding immediately. Although we didn't need to do the "Sleep Lady Shuffle" she suggests, so I can't comment on that. You will drive yourself crazy trying to find the "right" way to do things. Read what you can and do what feels right.
not worth it.......2007-08-25
This is essentially a "cry it out" book, except she recommends staying in the room for the crying part. There is no new information I could find. So utterly not worth it. It seems that this book was written to generate sales for her individual consultation service. If you've read "No Cry Sleep Solution" and "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" you do not need this book. Just meet the ideas in the middle and realize there will be some uncomfortable nights, then spend your money on something worthwhile.
Not much help for younger babies.......2007-08-24
We bought this book when our daughter was four months old (and had it shipped overnight--we were getting desperate!). It wasn't very helpful, as it turns out. Her advice for babies this age essentially boils down to letting them cry it out, but staying in the room with them. Not particularly helpful, especially since our daughter was more hysterical when we stayed in the room with her than when we left her alone. We ended up doing more of a Ferber approach. No fun for anyone involved, but it worked.
When she was seven months old, we went on a trip, and her sleep schedule got all messed up. We got the book out again, and this time read the chapter on six- to seven-month-olds. This is the age where West introduces her Sleep Lady Shuffle. The idea is that you stay near their crib and "shh-shh-shh" at them, pat their back, whatever. It's a pretty good approach, and it seems to work for our older baby. So if you're looking for advice on how to get your six-month-old to sleep, you'll probably get some good information here. If your baby is three months old, get another book.
It's okay.......2007-08-21
I needed something to tell me how much my baby should be sleeping and to give some direction on how to help that happen. If you want to or need to impose a schedule on your baby, this book is the least dogmatic I've read. It's also okay if what you want is some general baby sleep information.

Lady Emma Wells-Finch is determined to cause a scandal. Nothing big, you understand, just enough to convince her pompous British suitor that she's not an eligible candidate for marriage. She's thinking along the lines of, oh, maybe a discreet tattoo. But when suspended Texas golf pro Kenny Traveler meets her plane at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport, Emma decides that he's the perfect candidate to destroy her reputation.
Kenny, on the other hand--who desperately wants to be reinstated on the golf tour--is just as determined to keep a low profile and remain squeaky-clean. If Lady Emma weren't a close personal friend of the golf commissioner's wife, he'd never have agreed to squire her around town. Unfortunately for Kenny, his weakness for the British beauty is growing daily, and it seems as though Emma may have feelings for him as well. In a bizarre turn of events, wild man Kenny finds himself trying to keep the prim and proper British lady from causing a scandal the size of which even the lone-star state has never seen, and the results will leave you laughing with delight.
Below the hilarious dialogue that is Susan Elizabeth Phillips's trademark, Kenny, Emma, and the charming array of characters that populate this exceptional contemporary are warm and wonderfully human. Emma saves her Kenny and he saves her right back--never were two people more gloriously deserving of each other. --Lois Faye Dyer

Insightful and deliciously amusing, this is a terrific battle of the sexes!.......2007-08-08
Lady Emma Wells-Finch comes to America determined to lose her reputation, to disenchant a stuffy English beau. Her `chauffeur' is Kenny Traveler, a pro golfer on suspension for hell-raising. Only impeccable behaviour will allow him back on tour. Talk about opposites! Lady Emma bursts into a startled Kenny's life with bobbing hats, dangerous brollies, swirling, feminine skirts, a soft heart and whoa! a lush, porn star mouth. One look makes him think of her in: her proper place. Right underneath him. At first Emma thinks Kenny's a gigolo. Disabused of that notion, she decides he's just lazy and simple minded. Then she discovers there's a vulnerable, intelligent man lurking under the surface if anyone cares to look. Which no-one has, for a long time, content to dwell on Kenny's wild childhood and forget about his (reformed) adult successes. Passionate Emma, while defending him, accidentally kicks off a lurid scandal that could be the end of Kenny's career.
You'll love the secondary romance between Kenny's sister Torie and her geeky beau, Dexter. Their naughty spanking scene is hilarious: Watcha doin' back there, Dex? Also the wonderful character Patrick, Kenny's gay housekeeper, who shrieks for his smelling salts when he accidentally sees Kenny naked. Meanwhile, Kenny and Emma's turbulent, sensual romance lurches along with some unexpected and very funny twists.
Loved, Loved, LOVED IT!!.......2007-05-25
I've read several of SEP's books and this one was, by far, my favorite!! It made me laugh until the tears came!! I couldn't put this one down and was very sad when I finished it! My husband, who incidentally, has the same name as the main male character, was glad I finished it.........as, I woke him up in the middle of the night, laughing hysterically! I couldn't help it! Keep 'em coming like THIS one, SEP!!!
Lady IS Good!!!.......2007-04-25
This book has one of the most endearing, funny and romantic couple I've ever read about in a romance book. Lady Emma and Kenny meet through a mutual friend's intervention and where Lady E, a proper British headmistress wants to change her image, Kenny wants to clean it up due to his suspension from the Golf tournament. The result is a laugh out comedy with a very cute romance. The secondary characters are loads of fun too as in all SEP books. This book will keep you entertained till the last page and I highly recommend it! The author once again shows that her writing style is truly unique and she makes you feel all the emotions in just one story!
Great Funny Read.......2007-04-23
I was doubled over with tears in my eyes hysterically laughing so many times! I went back to reread certain passages so I could replay them in my mind more exactly as I was doing other things. This story is the development of a romance between two oddly matched people. It is a wonderful book. I am delighted to have discovered this author and I plan to read more of her books. Sexual content: moderate.
One of my favourites!.......2006-11-16
This is one of my favourite SEP's books. Lady Emma is sweet and innocent, yet at the same time determined and passionate about the things she care for. Kenny is exactly what she needs, a man who can protect her, make her laugh and enjoy herself. This book makes me laugh out loud with their witty banter and playfulness.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2006-02-24
I've had this for a couple of years. I think juicing is a pain but whenever I used the recipes in this book, I was pleasantly surprised that they tasted good. Juicing combinations that taste good are not easy to come up with. I tried the "Immune Support" for a sinus infection and not only did it taste good enough for my 9 year old to drink, it got rid of my sinus problem before it turned into a sinus infection. I was so pleased. I tried it again this winter and sure enough it worked again. I just tried another of her recipes and it too tasted great. So then I decided to go ahead and review it here on Amazon.
Great book!
Good, but nothing new.......2001-02-13
I give this book 4 stars because the information presented is excellent and well organized. However, much of the information in this book appeared previously in Calbom's book "Juicing For Life". If you own Juicing For Life, then this book is of somewhat reduced value to you; however, its prevailing method of organization makes it a helpful companion.
Included in this book are the many good recipes expected in such a volume, plus a series of nutritional essays about the role of juicing in a healthy lifestyle. Cherie Calbom also provides descriptions and guidelines for several different types of diets, from weightloss to gallbladder cleansing.
If this is your first book on juicing, this book is excellent. If this is your fifth, its a handy one to have. If this book is your tenth on the subject, then you likely have much of this information already.
All things considered, this is a quality book at a great price, and a welcomed addition to any juicing library.

Older, but Still a Good Read.......2007-09-11
This is one of the earlier books on the Lady Be Good and was more than adequate on the subject at that time. Since then much more information has come forth and the story updated by other authors, hence the three stars. However, for less than $10, it is still a good read. If you have more than a passing interest in the subject, I would suggest one of the newer books such as "Lady's Men".

Nice Early Work on the Lady Be Good.......2007-02-15
Probably the oldest book on the subject of the "Lady Be Good", it gives a decent overview of the story of the bomber, though later works and new information and research make it dated. Still, it was the benchmark for a number of years. There are pictures in here that aren't found in other sources, so this alone made it worth the price to me.
A VERY INTERESTING STORY.......2005-12-18
This is an excellent account, reconstructed of the mysterious disappearance of a B-24D Bomber and her entire crew in 1943. The plane was later found in the Libyan Desert in 1954. The author's research is excellent and a speculation goes, is probably as good as anyones. The author is able to hold your interest from cover to cover. I highly recommend this one.
