A magical train ride on Christmas Eve takes a boy to the North Pole to receive a special gift from
Amazon.com
One couldn't select a more delightful and exciting premise for a children's book than the tale of a young boy lying awake on Christmas Eve only to have Santa Claus sweep by and take him on a trip with other children to the North Pole. And one couldn't ask for a more talented artist and writer to tell the story than Chris Van Allsburg. Allsburg, a sculptor who entered the genre nonchalantly when he created a children's book as a diversion from his sculpting, won the 1986 Caldecott Medal for this book, one of several award winners he's produced.
The Polar Express rings with vitality and wonder.
Amazon.com Audiobook Review
The Polar Express book and CD gift set is a charming collage of enchanting sounds, lyrical words, and climatic storytelling. Read by Academy Award-winning actor William Hurt, author Chris Van Allsburg's children's classic--a winner of the Caldecott Medal--is accompanied by a handsome melody and the sweet sounds of sleigh bells, train whistles, and spirited cheers from hundreds of Santa's elves. The composition stirs the listener's imagination, bringing to life the magic of Christmas. Coupled with a hardcover book (and a special gift from Santa's sleigh), listeners can read along and gaze at luminescent drawings page after page. The Polar Express touches the imagination of those "who truly believe." (Running time: 11 minutes, one cassette) --Cate Bick

A Classic Christmas Story.......2007-05-24
One Christmas Eve a boy laid in his bed, all of the sudden he heard something. He heard a sound so different. A friend once described this sound to him. It was The Polar Express.
The Polar Express tells a fiction story of a boy who rides on The Polar Express train one Christmas Eve. The North Pole is where Santa was a waiting to give the first gift of Christmas. That gift will be given to someone on that train. Everyone hopes it is them but only one, only one can get the first gift.
I bet at one time or another you have all heard this story. It is a classic. The author, Chris Van Allsburg, tells this story so well. He also uses meaning beyond this books reading level. Chris says "Though I've grown old, the bell still rings for me as it dose for the ones who believe." If you read this quote once you will just think it's about believing in Santa. When you read it again and think about it, it could mean anything. It could mean believing in yourself, friends, family, ECT.
Even though a bell dose not ring for all of these reasons still believe, it's the best thing you can do.
The Polar Express By Chris Van Allsburg.......2007-05-23
This is a good book for kids becuase it states that any thing is possible. The genre may be fiction, but it still teaches a valuable lesson. The story is set in modern times and takes place in the winter. The author does a good job at explaining what the scenery looks like, een with out the graphics.Any one who likes christmas of all ages will like this book. The main character seems to be outspoken and mellow.the story is much the same with other books also called
The Polar Express by other authors, but it still teaches a valuable lesson for kids. Overall, I give this book a 4 out of 5
"The Polar Express" awesome book review.......2007-05-23
"The Polar Express" is a timeless story meant for all ages. It forces us to think about the disadvantage of growing up. When it's Christmas Eve a young boy suddenly hears a train whistle outside his window. He is welcomed aboard the Polar Express by the train conductor and many other children ready to depart on a trip to the North Pole. It is there that they will meet Santa and find out who the special child is that will receive the precious first gift of Christmas.
This fantasy story is one of the best-written about the true meaning of Christmas. The realistic details and dialogue more the story along. The style and meaning behind the plot is enough to make you remember it for years to come.
When reading "The Polar Express" all you think about is meeting Santa and discovering the gift of Christmas. Anyone who likes a well-told story with a moral to remember will love this book!
Magic.......2007-05-13
This is such a wonderful heartwarming story. I have read this to my classroom for years and now share it with my own child. Terrific. And of course the illustrations are beautiful.

Book Description
Disillusioned journalist Tom Langdon must get from Washington to L.A. in time for Christmas. Forced to take the train across the country because of a slight "misunderstanding" at airport security, he begins a journey of self-discovery and rude awakenings, mysterious goings-on and thrilling adventures, screwball escapades and holiday magic. He has no idea that the locomotives pulling him across America will actually take him into the rugged terrain of his own heart, as he rediscovers people's essential goodness and someone very special he believed he had lost. Equal parts hilarious, poignant, suspenseful, and thrilling, David Baldacci's THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN is filled with memorable characters who have packed their bags with as much wisdom as mischiefand shows how we do get second chances to fulfill our deepest hopes and dreams, especially during this season of miracles.
Download Description
Tom Langdon, a weary and cash-strapped journalist, was banned from flying in the U.S. when an overly probing search wand caused him to blow his top at LaGuardia Airport. Now, the train is his only option to get to Los Angeles for Christmas to be with his girlfriend. To finance the trip, he pitches a story about a train ride taken during Christmas season to his ex-flame editor, Eleanor. Thereupon begins one of the most hilarious-and heartwarming-train rides ever. Along the way Tom encounters mechanical failures, derailments, and eccentric characters like Agnes Joe, who rides trains all the time, though no one knows why. There's also a mysterious passenger whom Tom suspects may be a fugitive, an avalanche that changes everyone's Christmas plans, unexpected romance, and a rekindling of holiday spirits. As the mighty Southwest Chief chugs along, Tom Langdon and his wonderful train adventure will have you laughing as you turn the pages. It will also reacquaint you with what makes Christmas truly special.

Enjoyable Christmas Romance.......2006-03-29
This book the story of reporter Tom Langdon, who, having been banned from flying in the continental US after an unfortunate contretemps in security, takes the train from Washington, DC, to LA to be with his current girlfriend who he doesn't have much of an emotional attachment to. His great love was Eleanor Carter, a fellow reporter, who walked out on him in Tel Aviv many years earlier--and who, coincidentally, turns up on the same train with a movie producer and his assistant, a pair of lovebirds who plan to be married enroute, a priest, a rather overweight woman who's friends with all the train staff, plus a hoard of friendly train employees and unusual train travelers. I notice other reviews here decry this novel as not being like Baldacci's other books, as being a commercial for Amtrak, for being like a romance novel. Folks, did you even read the description of this book? It is a romantic story, and it is an unabashed paean to the good old days of train travel--what did you expect in a book taking place on a train with a plot about a man writing about the romantic side to train travel, a commercial for Delta? I won't claim this book is perfect. There are almost too many eccentric characters--doesn't anyone normal travel by train? (I guess those are the people we don't get names for, who are also on the train; they're too normal to figure in the story.) Also, there's not one Amtrak person who doesn't like working on the train (or if there is, we don't meet them). This is sort of a book version of a good old Hollywood Christmas film like WHITE CHRISTMAS and should be savored as such; if sentiment isn't your bag, pick up a Jack Higgins thriller. But please don't criticize THE CHRISTMAS TRAIN for being something it's not supposed to be. BTW, several folks comment that "Mark Twain is mentioned several times for no reason." In your haste to read this book looking for murder and mayhem, you completely missed the explanation that Tom Langdon was related to Olivia Langdon, Twain's wife.
The romance of train-travel is alive and well in the 21st century! .......2006-02-27
Our generation tends to speed through life at a fast and furious pace, particularly during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. This story provides a needed reminder of the restorative nature of slowing down and making the effort to appreciate all the subtleties around you that would otherwise speed on by without notice. Instead of flying cross-country for Christmas, journalist Tom travels by Amtrak, documenting the rural countryside his keen eye observes along the way. His musings are full of train-travel history, and he encounters numerous lively and quirky characters onboard. These add significant interest and vivid detail to the story.
This story is also about reuniting with the one who got away. Also aboard the train is Tom's one true love, Eleanor. She still holds a lot of anger and resentment towards Tom and his commitment-phobia. While it's obvious to everyone but them that they belong together, it takes an avalanche and rescue, a train robbery, the appearance of Tom's current girlfriend, and the help of all their newfound friends aboard to bring them around.
The Christmas Train is a delightful story, filled with Americana, action, adventure, human nature and forgiveness. A quick read that I highly recommend at any time of the year!

Customer Reviews:
Certainly not what we expected.......2007-01-10
My children and I are all fans of The Polar Express book and we did enjoy the movie as well. My youngest son, for whom I purchased this book, came to me with his 'review' before I had to ask... and then we gave the book away. Unfortunately, the book was not worth the money we paid for it, and even if it had been free, we would have not enjoyed it. This book is truly `the beginning', only telling the very first part of the story. While it is a Early Reader, it just wasn't interesting or enjoyable for my `beginning reader' to read, especially since we have the original book and the movie. Perhaps if it were sold in a set with other books that continue the story, it would be more enjoyable..
not what i expected.......2006-04-04
we love the movie and the original book so we were disappointed to find that this reader was so short. where's the rest of the beautiful story???
Not much depth.......2006-03-18
I was a little disappointed. This book doesn't go into a lot of detail and depth like the other Polar Express books I've read. Quite boring!
THE JOURNEY BEGINS.......2005-07-08
I bought this book for my granddaughter who has just learned to read. She was excited to be able to read a portion of the book that has always been read to her on xmas eve since she was born. I wish it had been longer and it may have been a little too easy for her. She is in the first grade.
"The Journey Begins..." Where's the Journey?.......2005-03-28
I must agree totally with Shannon. Very boring book. I bought this book assuming that there would be a series of books that cover "the Journey" all the way to the end, but nothing yet. As a stand alone book, terrible. As a beginning of a series, there is potiential.
GIVE US THE SERIES!!!

This is a great story. It was the first Baldacci book I read and it made me want to read more of his books. Our home is right next to the BNSF tracks which makes the book more real. A good read.

Excellent. Every Baldacci book I read is better than its predesessor. This shorter novel was a treat to read, i could barely put it down.
It is a GOOD story.

Silver Packages.......2005-12-28
This was a beautiful story written and illustrated. It allows one to discover how people can reach into the hearts of so many with a simple act of kindness. It also reassures children that one does not have to have a lot to change the lives of another. And that dreams do come true.

This one will bring tears to your eyes!.......2003-12-23
A dear teacher friend recommended this book and said she couldn't read it to her class without crying! I thought I would be able to read it to my grandson without tearing up, but alas...he had to finish the last few pages! (Much to his delight!) It is such a gentle, tender story. Even when you KNOW what the outcome will be, you can't help but FEEL the emotions the writer conveys so well! Outstanding illustrations put this book in a rare class!

I like Chris Soentpiet's book called Silver Packages. The pictures he drew were OUT OF THIS WORLD!!! The book was outstanding! I like the part when the boy is holding his first one in front of the Christmas tree.

Vividly illustrated from cover to cover with numerous full color photographs, Toy Train Memories by John Grams is a superbly organized and presented celebration of classic model railroad sets, such as many readers might have once received as Christmas gifts or seen in department stores near the holiday season, especially during the 1940's and 1950's. Toy Train Memories.......2002-11-04
I find it to be a beautiful book, a mixture of newer color photos of Christmas layouts, mixed with older classic black and white photos sent in by toy train lovers. Makes a great coffee table book during the holidays, or any time for that matter!
And I will admit that page 33 is my favorite,...due to the fact that,...it is a photo of me!! This book will make a GREAT Christmas present for all toy train lovers, and just might interest some to re-kindle their childhood memories, and drag out those trains and dust 'em off!!

Will he get home in time to make sure his stocking has been carefully hung? And when a big blizzard blows up, Thomas fears that Father Christmas may not find the engine shed at all.
The Reverend W Awdry first started telling his young son tales of Thomas, Percy and the other Really Useful Engines in 1944. In 1945, he started writing the tales down, and upon their publication they were immediately embraced by train lovers in Great Britain and worldwide. Before his death in 1997, the Reverend wrote 26 volumes of stories that continue to thrill generations of young readers.

Love this book!!!.......2007-01-10
As a mom, I love reading this book to my son(3). It doesn't scare him like some do. Its just a really nice story and the fact that its all about giving during Christmas is an added bonus. Thomas does good deeds in this one to help children and my son loves it. Most of the time he's sleeping before I get to the end of the book lol
The Best Thomas the Tank Engine Book I've Seen.......2006-11-08
"Puff, puff. Peep, peep. Snowflakes were just starting to fall as Thomas climbed the steep hill. It was Christmas Eve and Thomas wanted to be back in his shed with his friends. The engines' stockings were going to be hung soon and Thomas didn't want to miss that. But Thomas was a Really Useful Engine and he had three very important deliveries to make...and they could not wait." -- From the book
My son is an ardent fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, so we have quite a few of the Thomas books. Most reinforce the same rudeness, pettiness, and competitiveness of the TV series.
However, Thomas' Christmas Delivery offers quite a different tale. One snowy day, the night before Christmas, Thomas must make three important scheduled deliveries--food for the Community Hall for the big celebration, parcels to the school for the children that were unable to go home for the holidays, and presents for the residents of the Children's Hospital in Vicarstown.
It just so happens that Sir Topham Hatt comes out of the hospital, telling Thomas he has a very important job for him: delivering a toy train to a little boy with a broken leg.
Thomas is worried that Father Christmas will forget him, especially since Thomas' stocking wasn't hung before he left.
Thomas perseveres in the dark, snowy night, delivering the toy to the ecstatic--and grateful--injured boy and his Mom. Ever so slowly, Thomas makes his way home--exhausted.
Happily, his stocking is filled the next morning with the very thing he wanted most--coal!
The lavish illustrations by Tommy Stubbs are stunning. The people--carolers, Mrs. Kyndley, the trains--look so life-like. Snow-laden trees, billowing steam, colorful presents, cheery lighted windows--the images are almost photo-realistic at times. I've not seen a finer illustrated Thomas book thus far.
The story is engaging and heartwarming, and it's great to (finally!) see a Thomas story that's not centered around rudeness or harassment. Only one other train makes an appearance in Thomas' Christmas Delivery--Percy--and he peeps "Good morning, Thomas! Merry Christmas!" as the two discover their filled stockings.
This is a lovely Christmas book for fans of Thomas the Tank Engine series. The sparkling holographic silver snowflakes on this hardcover book adds a nice touch, as well.
A joy to read--especially with the gorgeous illustrations--Thomas' Christmas Delivery is a wonderful addition to any child's library.
Beautiful!.......2005-01-22
This book has replaced "Thomas and the Shooting Star" (also illustrated by Tommy Stubbs) as the most beautifully illustrated Thomas book. The illustrations are so lifelike and have such depth to them they make "...Shooting Star" look blurry in comparison.
The story is very nice as well. A great, feel-good christmas tale of how Thomas brings deliveries on christmas eve.
I've been reading this one to my 3 year old almost daily since we we got the book, and so far neither of us has grown tired of it.
