There is alot of good information in this book. I haven't started applying any of it, so I cannot tell you about that. But, if good, well organized, useful information is what you are after...buy this book.

I am pre diabetic and appreciated the information I got from this book. My family has enjoyed the recipes tried so far. They also gave me ideas about how to change my existing favorites.

It seems to be a never-ending battle. We start the day with the best of intentions. Today we are going to eat right, exercise, and control our stress. Then reality sets in. We wake up late (that stupid alarm didn't ring) to a chaotic mess of getting kids off to school on time (making sure that homework actually accompanies them). Our only aim at this point is to get to work before the boss notices. There's no time for a real breakfast, exercise, or a nice relaxing meditation session. Coffee and a donut will have to do as we drive through hectic traffic.
By midmorning, adrenaline and four cups of coffee have worn off and we are starting to feel drained. To make up time lost, we skip lunch or gobble down some fast food as we try to get caught up. With some food in our stomach's we finally feel back to normal. Unfortunately, this feeling is short lived and the day drags on.
We all know that we should do better. We all know that we should take the time to eat right, to exercise, and to reduce our stress. However, just getting through each day seems to take up all the energy we have.

I bought this book for my older daughter, who is overweight. Much of the symptoms of her condition were detailed in the book. But the book is too long. Anybody trying to reduce and control weight wants fast results.
A book so big is not practical. Author should review and condense it, probably to less than half.

This book taught me a lot of things about my body. I was never aware of my blood sugar levels, but now I recognize feelings I've always had - shaky, irritable - as low blood sugar. I've totally changed my diet b/c of this book, and I'm losing weight without being hungry. I'm sending my copy to a friend, and I've been telling a lot of people about it.
I really only read the first half or so. It gets a little repetitive, which is fine. That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars. You'll hit a section that appeals to your way of thinking. The message is the same throughout. It's not breathtaking, but it's full of staistics and information that will change the way you think. e.g. most Americans only get half the recommended amount of fiber in their diets.
I feel like reducing high glycemic index foods has ton a lot for me. I had a chronic cold/sinus infection for over 6 months that is gone. I feel more clear-headed. I'm able to resist my cravings for sweets, which is a big deal to me.
Get this book! It will turn your attitude around, and change your body and your life.

My husband is diabetic and I have been trying hard to find recipes that are good and quick and easy. I FINALLY found a GREAT cookbook that does that! (leave it to Betty Crocker!) I grew up with the same Betty Crocker cookbook that was passed down from my grandmother to my mother and so on... and now Betty has done it again! These recipes are wonderful, and easy to use! I just wish there were more Diabetic cookbooks by Betty Crocker! This is a GREAT book to have!

The Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook is just as fantastic as the regular Betty Crocker Cookbook. The pictures are mouth-watering, the recipes are easy to follow, and they taste wonderful! My husband, who is diabetic, found it hard to believe they were from a diabetes cookbook. If you are diabetic and buy just one cookbook, buy this one!! If you don't have diabetes but are trying to eat healthy, this is the book for you. I recommend it whole heartedly!
Betty Crocker Diabetes Cookbook.......2007-09-27
Nothing at all wrong with the finished food. But the book is only good if you are rich and have plenty of time to shop. The women who presented the meals obviously fit into both categories. If they were just regular people (like the name, Betty Crocker, is supposed to represent) they would not have said that these are quick and easy to prepare.

This is a good concept. You would need to learn to read labels very well. Taking the time to cook most of your own meals would work the best. It would be hard to eat out and make this work for you.

This book was sent to a friend of mine directly from the book seller; as such I cannot comment on the contents. My responses to questions numbers 1 and 2 were strictly improv, as the survey does not provide for "thinking out of the box"!
The easiest diet .......2007-08-26
This diet is the easiest diet I have ever done. You only give up flour and sugar. I am a diabetic and I never eat much sugar, so giving up flour was my only deterent. I don't feel as if I'm giving up much and I am losing between 1 and 2 lbs. a week. Many people lose more, because they have always eaten flour and sugar. It really isn't difficult to stay on this diet because you can eat almost everything.
I like the book because Dr. Gott has some letters from dieters and he explains exactly what you can and cannot have.
I probably won't make many of the recipes because I know what I can eat and what I cannot eat.
I highly recommend the book.

FIRST DIET BOOK THAT I CAN REMEMBER WHICH MENTIONS THE VALUE OF EXERCISE AND QUANTITY OF FOOD EATEN. ALSO TALKS ABOUT ALL THE FAD DIETS AND WHY THEY FAIL IN THE LONG TERM. I LIKE BOOKS WHICH ARE SIMPLE AND TO THE POINT.

From her work with insulin-resistant patients with Type II diabetes, Dr. Schwarzbein concludes that low-fat diets cause heart attacks, eating fat makes you lose body fat, and it's important to eat high-cholesterol foods every day. Picture cardiologists and dieticians tearing their hair out and overweight people cheering as they dive into Eggs Benedict with sausage.
According to Schwarzbein, the high-carbohydrate, low-fat, moderate-protein diet that most dieticians and disease-prevention organizations recommend is the culprit that turns people into diabetics, makes them age faster and get degenerative diseases, and keeps them fat and unhealthy. She supports her theory with case studies of people who were sick and miserable on high-carbo, low-fat diets and who sprang to life when they "balanced" their diets with more fat and protein. Schwarzbein recommends avoiding "man-made carbohydrates"--processed carbs--in favor of those you could "pick, gather or milk." When I read this book, said, "WOW, this makes sense!" I have been on a good vitamin regime that includes progesterone and following the diet in this book. [...] In two months of the suppliments and progesterone and one month on this diet, I have; no more daily headaches, have slept better, feel refreshed upon waking for the first time in decades, lost 12 pounds, don't feel deprived, lost my cravings for sugar and processed cabs, have better moods, have quite a lot less muscle and joint pain, have more energy, enjoy sex more, have people tell me I am looking good, lost that puffy look in my face and body, have softer skin, my roscaea has lessened, my intestinal and uterine pain has gone away, and my allergies are a lot less, therefore my asthma is not as bad. I am 52, menopausal, with a top weight of 249, (now 237) with chronic pain and headaches. I am unbelievably happy about this diet and plan to continue it to become healthy and strong again. I have a long ways to go, but the start is amazing. I started out with adding butter and cream to my diet and stopped eating sugar and white carbs. I have always had cravings for sugar, but as soon as I got my fill of good fats, I lost my sugar cravings and have not been tempted to eat sugary or processed foods since. I have the cookbook on order and I am reading the other two books Dr. Schwarzbein has written. If you want to be healthy and feel better, read this book and go through her recommendations. You won't regret it. Just be aware that you may feel worse for a short time and then feel much better, it is your body making adjustments and is temporary. It depends on how sick and out of balance your body and system is. You have to stick with it to get good results. I have to say that I certainly do not feel deprived and feel satisfied.
Sensible eating and great for food addictions.......2007-05-30
I am now sold. was 80% there but after 5 pregnancies in 6 years, things went awry. then my mom went to the ER with a blood sugar of 887. I am now 42 with a 10 month old and two other young kids. Mom's visit got my attention. I immediately lost 6 pounds then switched to a cleanse by standard process which was very easy since i was eating pretty healthy anyway. When i got this book, i also signed up for womentowomen personal program. between the diet and the supplements and natural progesterone cream, i was a new woman almost immediately. my chocolate and wine cravings disappeared nearly overnite. I have alot of work to do still, have 20 pounds to go and have to find balance but food in this plan is balanced and a no brainer. even my meat and taters hubby drinks my veggie/fruit/avacado/protein (balanced) smoothies every day. he is hooked. our moods are better, more even. Now am working on my PMS and other menopause issues ala "what your doctor does not tell you about premenopause" by dr. Lee/Hanley and Uzzi Reice (sp?) book. just had my saliva hormones tested and am on the path to join my other girlfriends that feel fabulous. This is not a miracle, it takes a while to get back to a normal eating plan so your body is balanced and not starving. but, its a great plan. I recommend it to my friends. I am now 11 pounds down and headed for 20 more, 5 at at time. And, its not Atkins, you eat veggies and fruits and all things good. you don't eat crap though and i chose to give up coffee (and creamer) as well as limiting my alcohol intake. That with the diet, the good supplements and the natural pg cream, let's just say my husband will keep me a bit longer now (he wanted to hide me in the dumpster from mood swings up until now!!!).

This book is fantastic! My mom actually turned me on to it after reading it herself. It taught me so much about the foods we eat and the foods we should eat. It also talks a lot about carbs. (good and bad) I had no idea that what I had been eating was really destroying my health.(physical and mental) This book was so easy to read and understand. In my oppinion, next to the Bible this is another book that everyone needs to read!!!(at least once) And the diet plan is the easiest I have ever seen!

I was disappointed in this novella having read the entire series of Plum books. No Ranger, Hardly any Morelli and some guy named Diesel who "pops in and out". The story was not believable and the wedding at the end was ridiculous.

I especially loved this short novel. It was fast, fun, and rang in the holiday spirit! Read it two years ago during Christmas; it's become a holiday tradition and a relaxing break for myself during the busy holiday season! Draw yourself a bubble bath, grab the book, and head for the tub. It's a great escape and you deserve it! Enjoy!

I have read the first four books from the Stephanie Plum series and found them rather enjoyable. This book however is awful. It is quite obvious that this book was written in lightning speed with not much thought or editing. I was quickly becoming a fan of Janet Evanovich but this book has turned me away from her slightly.

A Great Author.......2007-09-28
****LOTS OF SPOILERS***
Readers here are obviously unhappy with this book, many blaming it on Kleypas' change to contemporary romance. I don't think the real root of their disappointment is that this is a contemporary work. I think the real problem is that most readers picked up this book expecting her usual romance, and instead got a different type of book.
I am a reader that knew in advance that this book wasn't going to be a romance. I began reading, knowing that this was going to be Liberty's life story. Therefore, I don't feel as disappointed as some of the other readers. I was able to really enjoy her story. These characters came alive for me more than any others in her previous works. The book was incredibly well written, but I felt disappointed with how the actual story was developed.
The scenes between Hardy & Liberty are few and far between. But those couple scenes are so incredibly powerful & moving...only Kleypas could write scenes like this. These aren't "sex scenes", these are love scenes. I prefer R-rated romance, but these love scenes are so powerful they gave me goosebumps. I read (and forget) a LOT of romance but I know the emotional intensity of these scenes will stay with me forever.
Unfortunately, the very brilliance and emotional intensity of these scenes leaves the reader feeling frustrated that so little of the book involves the two of them together. In addition, the intensity of their love far outshines the scenes between Gage & Liberty. This is why so many readers feel Liberty ended up with the wrong man.
I think this leads to another aspect that frustrates readers. Hardy is an amazingly ethical teen boy/man. He knows he'll be leaving town to make something of himself. He loves Liberty so much that he refuses to get involved in a relationship with her because he doesn't want to break her heart when he leaves. After he leaves, Liberty's life story is so well done, you don't mind waiting for them to get their Happy Ever After. When that doesn't happen, and Hardy the grown man is depicted as unethical, it is really inconsistent with how his character had been previously portrayed. Maybe it would have worked better if Gage & Liberty's love story was longer and more detailed. However, we don't get enough time with them to get attached to them as a couple. Therefore, for most of us, the book ended in a really disappointing manner.
A Little Too Saccharine .......2007-09-18
I'm typically a fan of Kleypas' work, but this book fell short for me. The pacing is uneven throughout the novel. An inordinate amount of the novel is devoted to Liberty's childhood and the final chapters of the book are rushed. The characterizations also seem a bit unreal.
Kleypas also does sizable amounts of information dumping. Whole paragraphs are devoted to: "Texan Men" or "Houston Suburbs." It's clear that she loves her homestate, but it's trite and unnecessary.
It's still a good bit of escapism, but you might want to visit your library or wait for the paperback edition.

I saw this book featured in a magazine article about hot new books. On my next trip to the library it was on the new book shelf and remembering the magazine article I checked it out. This is one of those books that as soon as you read it you want it OUT of the house!! (I donated mine to the library the very next day.) Days later I am still thinking about this dratted book and I just want to find the heroine and shake her! What was she thinking?? She chose the wrong guy!!! Right up until the last page I kept hoping something would happen - that the WRONG guy would die, or she would break up with him.
Yes, I know the OTHER guy committed a sort of industrial espionage, using an accidental, offhand comment the heroine made, but that sort of thing is a once-in-a-lifetime event. (Haven't YOU ever made a mistake that you later regretted, but yet you know that if you were sent back in time and given a chance to do it over you would make the same mistake? Something that only time and experience can teach you was wrong?) Compare that to the continuous, every day, totally-out-of-hand possessiveness of the WRONG guy. Who do you trust more? Who trusts you more? The WRONG guy comes right out and says, "Trust, but verify." That sort of behavior doesn't go away once you tie the knot - it just gets worse. That kind of man can all too easily turn into the guy that doesn't let his wife out of the house without an inquisition afterward, makes her account for every mile on the car's trip-meter, every phone call, every letter, every glance at any male over the age of 16. He's practically stalking her before they even get married!
I wish I could either rewrite the ending, or wipe this book from my memory. And I DON'T think it should count as romance. Sure she gets the guy in the end, but it's the WRONG GUY!!! AARRRRGGGHHH!!!!
P.S. I still love this author. The Wallflower quartet is fabulous!

I bought this for my mom, who was diagnosed with diabetes. She said this was incredibly informative and easy to read (as an example, she found out that a baked potato is the sugar-equivalent of eating several dozen tablespoons of sugar, or something wild like that). Anyhoo, she never heard of this book until I bought it for her and she has since given it to famiy members and friends to read. She has even highlighted passages. To me, those are pretty good indications that this book is a smart purchase.

So much advice about diets and losing weight is out there on the market that you don't know which expert advice is really worth following. Should you look for food with less calories, less fat , less cabohydrates, less what? Sugar Busters clarifies the problem of why most of us are overweight and gives, in my opinion, an understandable and logical explanation to our misgivings while indicating to us which foods are most acceptable for those wanting to lose weight and which foods are anathema, i.e. don't even think of eating them. A surprisingly good, readable, enjoyable and informative book. Worth the money and time spent on reading it!

I've always been a healthy eater, attempting to choose low fat foods and healthy portions, but after a few years of decreased activity I was 65 pounds overweight. I read this book, and a light went on for me: it was not how much or little I was allowing myself to eat, but rather the type of foods I was eating. Everything set forth in this book made good medical sense to me. Even my doctor had told me, "If the cavemen did not have the food you are about to eat, choose something else. Enough of all the processed foods!" I should have listened sooner.
The book sets for the medical reasoning behind why some of us gain weight despite eating what others might think is a "healthy" diet. Minor substitutions and changes in what type of sugars I eat and when I eat them has helped me lose 60 pounds and keep it off!
The wonderful aspect of Sugar Busters is that the diet is a "lifelong way of eating" rather than some fad. In fact, this diet is prescribed as a medically sound way to prevent or control diabetes, which has become almost an epidemic in America. I have spent the last year using the tools I learned from this easy reading book to change my life, my body, and my outlook. People now want me to tell them how I got so healthy, while never wearing the frown of deprivation that other diets would put on my face. This eating plan has changed my life. I am not a religious person, but if I were, I'd want to preach about the merits of following this sound plan and getting a healthy body and mind in the process.
If you read this book, take the time to think about the concepts set forth, and make the easy changes to implement the principles in the book, you cannot avoid losing weight. It just works. I have never been hungry for a minute, and those 60 pounds are not going to return. I am 100% confident that this is the plan I have always been searching for.

Sugar Shock! is the ultimate, up-to-date view based on research for describing how consuming high glycemic foods (ones that are quickly turned into blood sugar) can undermine your health, happiness, peace, and prosperity . . . not to mention your love life and appearance. As such, the book's title is a little misleading . . . white flour, white rice, and vodka are just as much of a problem as is adding sugar to your coffee or drinking high-fructose corn syrup in your Coca-Cola. To handle that, the authors refer to anything that quickly turns into blood sugar as a sugar.
I have read many books on this subject and learned a great deal from each one. Because of so much research being done that overturns false opinions about nutrition, there's a lot that's new to report. Connie Bennett and Dr. Stephen Sinatra provide an extensive bibliography that's worth the price of the book all by itself.
Too many of these "empty" calories (called that because they provide few, if any minerals and vitamins), and you may develop diabetes, cancer, heart disease, female infertility, deep lines in your skin, and accelerate losing your memory.
If that doesn't bother you, foods that turn quickly into sugars can make you feel lousy, be angry, kill your sex drive, make menopause worse, slow down your learning, and depress you.
Further, you can become addicted to these foods . . . about half as much as you can to cocaine.
Neither the food companies nor the government really care if you eat these foods that make you sick. But you should care. With this book, you'll have a good sense of what you should be doing: eating lots of protein, slowly digested fruits and vegetables, good-for-you fats (like those in most fish), and increasing your fiber in anyway you can.
The book provides several programs to help you shift your diet. Of the advice here, the best probably relate to going on a good-for-you diet for 3 weeks to make the switchover and having lots of emotional support as you do. In that sense, the advice isn't too much different from what you'll find from The South Beach Diet and related books. I suggest you check those out as well because you'll get lots of menu and snacking ideas.
But for sheer motivation to reform your eating, it's hard to beat Sugar Shock!

I recently read Sugar Shock, and honestly the title really fits in information given in this book. It is SHOCKING to find out how we are lied to, cheated and lead down a road of disease, sickness and adiction. All for the sake of someone else getting rich! Amazing. This book is such an informative tool. I recently quit smoking, and i feel much better for doing so, but my body still was out of whack.. this book is really helping me figure out why. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a way to understand how sugar can really destroy their lives.
A Wake Up Call to how Bad I Was.......2007-08-20
I got this book at the recommendation of one the morning news programs because at the time I had sneaky suspicions that I was a sugar addict, and did not know where to turn to gain confirmation of this hypothesis.. While I waited for the book to arrive, I did my own further investigating to confirm my fears, this book did the confirming for me fully. Its an EXTREMELY easy reading book, and at times is so easy its confusing and actually boring. I'm not fond of the tagging back and forth between Dr. Sinatra and Ms. Bennett in how they present evidence. I'm more medically oriented, so I'd like less of the cutesy nomers Ms. Bennet and Dr. Sinatra place on their "bubbles of info". But, what this did for me is provide me with a checklist which Ms. Bennett lists were her symptoms of sugar addcition, which I checked all of except two. Yes Ms. Bennett's case was somewhat skewed because it was associated with a medical condition, but what the list showed me was that if I didn't wake up and recognize how HORRIBLE sugar and refined sugar is to the human body, I was going to be a Shrew just like her and more importantly do severe detriment to my health. I have since started a separate program (about 8 days into it), which does eliminate a drastic amount of sugar from one's diet and I can safely eliminate 90% of the symptoms in Ms. Bennett's checklist. Skeptics I am sure you will be too fast to call it coincidence, but my body tells me otherwise. Sugar Shock is just that, a SHOCK to wake you up if you think you have an addiction to sugar. I am so happy that I read this book. I read it in hopes that I could learn something, and then pass it along to my mom. We both overdose on the sugar, and thanks to the insight in Sugar Shock, I am inspired to change my poor habits. Now I am looking forward to getting the grocery list suggestions that are offered on the Sugar Shock site.

This book truly helps to understand why we have sugar cravings, how to curb those cravings and in the end result end up losing weight. I appreciate the information.

I bought this book because I was looking for a cookbook that stressed nutrition. I purchased a few other cookbooks at the same time and this is by far my favorite. The book has a wide variety of delicious meals that have all been surprisingly quick and easy to prepare. Unlike many "health food" cook books, this book did not sacrifice taste to nutrition. Instead the recipies use nutritious ingredients in such a way that the flavors are enhanced and compliment each other.
I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to focus on conforming to a healthy diet but still wants to enjoy their food!

The information at the beginning of the book is great. It gives great tips for eating healthy and slimming down. I personnally, do not care for all of the recipes. They seem to be a bit more labor intensive than I expected and use ingredients not always on hand. A re-do of one's kitchen pantry is necessary to make sure you have on hand a lot of the ingredients.

I use this on a daily basis to come up with new and healthy meal ideas that my whole family will enjoy. Not one of them has complained that they didn't like what I made. My kids scarfed up everything and even went back for 2nds! A true addition to any cooks collection, even if you're not watching your sugar. Fabulous!!
