2 out of 5 stars the wheels of darkness.......2007-10-10

when I read his first book it grab a hold of me and would not let go,but sorry to say as each new book came out,his writting went down hill.this lastest book was a waste of time and money,it did not reflect how good he was in the begining nor how good he cpuld be if only he went back to his basic writting like in the begining.

5 out of 5 stars the wheel of darkness, cd.......2007-10-10

As always, Preston and Child's Pendergast is always intriguing. I have read or listened to every one of the books with this character and look forward to more.

3 out of 5 stars High Seas Horror.......2007-10-10

The latest Agent Pendergast adventure takes him and ward Constance Greene on a chase from a Tibetan monastery to a runaway ocean liner headed for destruction. The pace, action, style, etc are what I have come to expect from the authors and I was not disappointed. However, for over half the book I felt it had too many of the standard murder-on-shipboard events, something like a Charlie Chan Ocean Mystery. There were also too many shipboard characters with points of view expressed, leaving Pendergast sliding through the shadows and Constance seeming to be the primary protagonist. Things turn for a demonic worst about three-quarters of the way through the book and then it's a cliffhanger situation for everyone in sight, with murder, mayhem, and outright horror in non-stop action. I enjoyed the read, dealing once more with the enigmatic agent, but felt the hanging conclusion too similar to The Book of the Dead for my liking.

3 out of 5 stars Something Lacking -.......2007-10-10

Being an avid fan of the Pendergast tales, I have found this new addition to be lacking -- it does not match the writing, insight,or intrigue of the previous books. I agree with the other less positive reviews, especially the feeling that this book was written in haste to fulfill a contractual deadline, that it lacked the detail of earlier books. Looking forward to the next Pendergast tale, and hopefully the next will be more focused as the earlier books were.

5 out of 5 stars Leaves you wanting more Pendergast tales!.......2007-10-09

This is another great Pendergast tale in which the author's have taken him in a "fresh" direction. Pendergast charged with the care of Contance, takes her to a secret learning center for Tibetan monks. While there they learn that an ancient object has been stolen. What is more, it was an object that was to be used to "cleanse" the world from sin when the world becomes out of control. Pendergast is asked to track down the thief and bring the object back before it is unleashed on the world.

Pendergast and Constance follow the thief across Europe and the trail leads to an ocean liner making its maiden voyage (the Britannia) to the US. Mysterious things start happening aboard ship, including some grisly murders. Also, some other things happen that could make the Britannia the next Titanic.

This is an excellent follow-up to the recent trilogy and we learn more about Pendergast's life, what might have really happened to his brother and what really happened between his brother and Constance.

The book picks up momentum like a snowball and heads towards a tense climax!

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2006-12-24

I will not write much on the obvious flaws of this book, how it left many questions unanswered, etc. This has been written by others already. I just wanted to add something that no one else seems to have commented on. The ghost writer screwed up the timeline again (as he has done in previous books). In the beginning of the book, (big) Celeste is interviewed at the mental clinic. The doctor's report says she is 17 yrs, 4 months old. The doctor mentions that Baby Celeste was 6 yrs old at the time. That would've made big Celeste 11 yrs old when she had her! Huh?! In the book "Celeste", when Celeste meets Elliot Fletcher (who later gets her pregnant), she tells him she is 15 yrs old. So, by the beginning of the book "Child of Darkness", big Celeste should've been 21 yrs old. Apparently, Andrew Neiderman does not know how to count! Get with the program, dude!
And you should have written more about the fate of big Celeste, who was a much more interesting character anyway.

3 out of 5 stars Worst of the Three- Left a lot to be Desired.......2006-06-01

I was quite disappointed in how this trilogy ended. I had to read this final book, of course, to see how this story all ended up, but instead, it left me with more questions. Not only was Baby Celeste's story never resolved, but neither was her mother's. I was looking so forward to a happy, healthy reunion between mother and daughter, and I didn't even get that much.

The characters in this story had nothing to do with the first two books, and it was as if it was a story of its own. Wrapping up the trilogy was crammed into the last couple of chapters, and it was never even really wrapped up. At the risk of giving too much away, the book never explained whether or not the first Celeste was ever mentally healed, and it never showed whether or not Baby Celeste and her mother were ever able to have a real relationship. It was sad, really. Even worse, it never even explained what happened to everyone else that came into Celeste's life during the first two thirds of the book, including a new boyfriend who always pledged his love and devotion to her, and her twisted adopted family who she ran away from. Instead of getting answers to the first two books, it just created a second story to not have the answers to. Very frustrating and unsatisfying.

While the first two novels in this series were page turners, this last one was dull, slow-moving, and non-resolving. Sorry for those of you who read the first two and need to purchase this one for the trilogy's ending- you won't get the answers you seek.

3 out of 5 stars Overall better than most of the later series.......2006-03-29

I loved VC Andrews...My Sweet Audrina, Flowers in the Attic, Heaven...she gave us characters and families that made an impression.
However after her death, the ghostwriter (Andrew Neiderman, from what I hear) began recycling her plotlines. Names & settings might change, but you knew there would be any combination of the following 1) incest, 2) a mean grandmother, 3) a tragedy-induced haircut, 4) a big family secret involving someone's paternity--usually the result of rape and/or incest and 5) a crazy relative.
The Gemini series started better than most. It felt like Mr. Neiderman was finally capturing VC's true voice...maybe he even developed psychic abilities of his own and started channeling VC However, the writing in the 2nd book started to slip (And why did "Mommmy" suddenly become "Mama"...especially when we all know that VC herself always used "Momma")...and the timeline started to fall apart.
I think Mr. Neiderman could truly write a book to equal VC's earlier works, if he would just slow down. It seems like there's new book every time I turn around...and the writing shows the lack of care and attention.
I agree with other reviewers...I would like a prequel (preferably one where the main character DOES NOT get locked in a room during her pregnancy...'cause you know that's probably what happened to "Mommy" when the first Audrina...ahem, I mean the first Celeste aka Baby Jordan was born).
I would recommend the series for a cold rainy weekend...All 3 books are quick and easy reads.

3 out of 5 stars Dissappointing..........2006-02-27

This book was dissapointing to say the least. Despite my attempts to avoid the back cover. The picture on the back gave the story away. I spent the majority of my time waiting for Basil to rape Celeste. The only redemption comes in the way that it takes place and the fact that they had been planning it since the beginning!

Though I was amused with the storyline leading up the the big event I was extrememly dissapointed with the resolution. I did not know going into it that it was the final book in the series. In fact, I actually came online looking to see if there were more books in the series.

So many questions were left unanswered... What happened to big Celeste? Did the young Celeste end up pregnant? What happened to her boyfriend, the one who professed his neverending love and devotion to her? Did he just forget about her? Did the other kids at school wonder where she went? Did Ami, Wade, and Basil go looking for her? Did mother Celeste and daughter Celeste ever develop a normal relationship? Did mother Celeste ever recover from her illness? Did young Celeste ever regain her clarvoiyance? Did she finish school? Did she marry? Have any other children?

I am still in shock that the series is over. I don't understand how this story could possibly serve as a proper ending. I seriously recommend that the ghostwriter get to work quickly on an epilogue and quite frankly, a prolouge , to explain to the readers what happened and why it all happened.

I am so dissappointed, in fact, that I am afraid to start another series in fear that it will leave me with as many questions as this one. It's a shame really.

4 out of 5 stars better than the 2rd one.......2006-01-12

I liked this one. You knew the the girl was going to be raped but the reason was not just to rape her. This book is a lot better the the 2rd one. The first one was ok but this one was the best. She was not as messed up as her mother & grandmother. The grandmother was the worst & her mother didn't have a chance.

5 out of 5 stars If you have lost a child this book is the only one you'll ever need.......2007-07-07

Silent Grief by Clara Hinton

When the subject of miscarriage, or child loss of any type comes up; why do people just try and avoid talking about what happened? Doctors, friends, and even family that are supposed to be there through everything to support you can even seem to turn you away, only saying two words that break your heart, "I'm Sorry." When you need comfort and consoling more now than ever, it seems like you're left all alone to grieve by yourself.

Just looking to find a way to help mothers, fathers, or anyone who has suffered from child loss; Clara Hinton writes about her own experiences. Going from the pain of miscarriages to still birth and beyond, Ms. Hilton explains how to turn to God as he will always be there to comfort you when no one else seems to care.

I needed tissues while reading this book. I have also had a miscarriage and it tore me apart. I constantly blamed myself for not being able to carry the child and felt that I had let my husband down. It is just a part of the grieving period and now that I have read Silent Grief, I feel a little more at peace knowing that there have been people in the same situation. Blaming yourself and silently cursing God for the death of your child is natural actually, but if you continue to have faith in Him then your life will turn out as it should be.

Anyone man or woman, should read this book if you've suffered through child loss of any kind. It is written with hands of experience and love that can help you through one of the toughest times in your life. I honestly wish I had this book through my "dark time" as I call it because it would have helped me so much.
This book will remain on my keeper shelf and I will gladly recommend it to anyone that could use a friend in their time of need. Ms. Hinton gets 5 hearts and huge hugs from me!

1 out of 5 stars No hope.......2007-03-18

I read this book because it was recommended by a well-respected family organization. This is the absolute worst book to read if you are in recovery from miscarriage. It goes way too much into graphic details of miscarriages themselves and after you get through all the "darkness" of the book - there is very little hope or encouragement offered or given. It did more to cause me to have to relive the pain again than heal the grief. I was so upset by this book I wrote the organization that recommended the book and requested the local bookstore I purchased it from take it off the shelf in fear of the damage it might do to someone else. It was obviously written by someone who had not yet healed from her own grief. There are much better books out there that will get you through miscarriages or loss of a child - the one that probably helped me the most was a book called Losing You Too Soon.

3 out of 5 stars A Very Good Book.......2006-05-31

This book talks about all types of loss, from miscarriages to the death of a child. It is a very good book if you are looking for a general book on grief and loss. If you are looking for a book which main focus is about miscarriage, I would not recommend this book. Also at times the author does discuss faith and using faith to find your way through the darkness which is not for everyone.

4 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who has lost a child.......2004-06-25

It has been more than a year since my husband and I suffered a miscarriage after struggling with infertility. I was fortunate to have found the silent grief website and this book soon after this devastating experience. Those who have suffered an early pregnancy loss know that very few people begin to understand the pain, let alone, are able to comfort us. This book was the only one on the subject that healed my spirit. As someone who knows, first hand, the pain of pregnancy loss, Clara Hinton articulates so well all the feelings a mother experiences. Most importantly, this book will help you understand why others don't seem to share your pain, why your spouse will express grief differently, and how to cope through it all. If you have lost a child, this book is a must read. The author is a strong Christian woman; therefore, the book makes a lot of references to Scripture (a warning for those who don't share the Christian faith).

5 out of 5 stars Simply wonderful author.......2004-02-21

This was required reading for a class I took. I was deeply moved by it. She shared her intermost feelings telling about her own grief and her own loss. She was also a guest speaker at this class. Clara Hinton is such a warm and caring person. Even if you haven't suffered the loss of a child this book can help you to help those that did. It made me cry, I truly had felt her loss. She really needs to go on the Oprah show.

This is an excellent book to help anyone better understand the pain and suffering inflicted upon victims by sexual abusers. It will help anyone that reads this book to have victim empathy for the one who must endure sexual abuse.

    Book Description

At just four years old, Kimberly Steward found herself seeking refuge in the doghouse. Luki, the family dog, kept her warm while a light flowed in through the doghouse roof, letting her know her angel was near and would stay with her. She needed an angel. The sexual abuse had begun. She and her 17 siblings were more than aware of the physical and emotional abuse her father and uncle were prone to, and now this.

Ms. Steward writes, not to sensationalize the abuse, not to seek pity, but to lend a voice to those who cannot voice their experience; to end the phrase "cycle of abuse" and begin the "cycle of healing". She writes, in dialog form, of her sessions with the psychiatrist who finally brought her to the light of healing. Included also are poems from stages throughout her life, illustrated by the author's own hand.

As a person not subject to abuse, after reading The Doghouse Angel you will carry with you your potential for intervention, and will never again wonder whether or not you should "get involved".

As an abused person, you will find hope and guidance for obtaining help. You will have a voice.

As a caregiver or professional in the field of child or family services, you will understand.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Honest.......2004-03-12

"The journey to healing from an abusive childhood is often fraught with difficulties. Kimberly Steward relates her experiences in The Doghouse Angel, telling her story through counseling sessions reflecting back to her earlier years as one of eighteen children. There are many portions of this book that are heartbreaking to read. But for those who have experienced similar situations, this book shows that healing can occur. The Doghouse Angel should be required reading for counselors, pastors, and others who deal with abused children and with adults still traumatized by their childhood. Kimberly Steward's insights bring the dark secret of abuse into the light."

"Powerful" and "Inspiring" are the words most often used by those I speak to who have read "The Doghouse Angel". Many of my friends in our book club, quilting groups and at church knew of my friendship with the author and read the book as soon as it came out. Because they knew something of Kimberly's childhood they were a little apprehensive but quickly became publicists themselves. "She has so many positive things to say after such terrible experiences. I am amazed that she is able to do that."
"What you have just said is the reason she wrote the book and the reason so many people will benefit from reading it," is my reply. People in the healing professions will find the book a valuable resource. As a former foster parent and teacher, I know that, if you have had abusive experiences which still trouble you, or know others in similar situations, you should read "The Doghouse Angel" to see that there are steps to take to heal.

The Doghouse Angel is honest and moving. It helps you access your compassion for other's and see your own struggles with a new perspective. Very powerful for such a short book.

It was surprising to read the author's descriptions and to find myself and other people I've known and places I've heard of and stories they've told. Crimes I've lived through, heard rumors of and imagined. Tragic homes built by people too young, too ignorant, too sick or too hateful to possess the tools needed to craft healthy and happy ones.

It may be enough to stand aside a place we cannot fathom and simply admire the woman who has the courage to describe its horrors. Author Kimberly Steward has earned this here. Her history is, hopefully, the most remarkable readers will ever know.

But it is so much more when you read a book and find yourself literally looking around to see if anyone has noticed you are sitting there naked. Recognizing in it the thoughts you had and the lessons you learned and the hope you dared and the prices you paid for all of it. This book is intimate and personal and painful and triumphant. I wept for this bouquet too big for most to hold-black and blue and awful flowers grown from tiny seeds too many of us held ourselves. It is a grand and unique example that shouts what untold numbers whispered and whisper still.

Read it if you are a therapist or a counselor who deals with physical, emotional and sexual abuse and the myriad results impacting its perpetrators, victims and survivors. Read it if you work with young people who may need you to lend them a voice they cannot find for themselves. Read it if you or someone you love has ever felt the filthy hands of incest or molestation upon them. Read it if you can be inspired by strength and reminded of how grace and the human spirit pulls for the children who know too much too soon and survive, often thrive, in spite of the dreadful odds before them. I truly can't think of anyone for whom this does not apply. This woman is an inspiration and I hope you'll gift yourself with her story.

4 out of 5 stars Understanding the impact of childhood abuse.......2003-07-18

I found this book to be a very big eye opener into the lives of abused children. It is amazing what these 18 children endured thru their entire childhood.Yet the author seems to have been able to overcome it all and help others who may suffer as she did.God Bless the little children, may they never have to endure what Kimberly had to.I think this book shows there is light at the end of the tunnel.

5 out of 5 stars Cried with author.......2001-07-06

I have already finished your book and I found it to be very well written, very detailed (which I love), and as I read, my heart ached for the little girl and the life events that made for such a childhood, I even cried with you. We never know why one is chosen over another to have a certain life, and bare those kinds of burdens. But I rejoiced with you when you made that commitment to the Lord and you came forward at church, at such a young age, and how He always kept coming to your mind in times of trouble. I was touched how the Holy Spirit would come to you, protect you, and talk to your heart. And I rejoiced and praised the Lord when I read that you had been healed and He now walks with you every minute. Oh, I sing praises to His name for bringing you to a place of forgiveness and peace. I'm choaked up even now, just knowing you are in His care. I also feel like I know you in some way. Thank you for letting me into your life. Thank you for your honesty and sincerity. I feel like I know too much and yet I can't wait to meet you and hug you! Please know how blessed we will be to have you on the show and how we look forward to meeting you personally. <> < Leslie MN Reality Radio

I am amazed at the extent of God's sovereignty and the depths of His love for us. The author endured a great deal of abuse, in terms of number of events, variety of events, and intensity of events. But through it all, He was there -- allowing her to endure up to her limit, but no more. As one who was also victimized with emotional abuse, the author's story and love for God has been a true encouragement and comfort for me. And she has made one thing very clear to me: that God does indeed work all things for good for those who love Him. In spite of whatever ugliness and evil may come our way, God is always there for us, and He will never leave us or forsake us. And yet, He can turn our moments of despair into opportunities to reach out, encourage, and help others in their moments of despair by uniquely positioning us with a profound depth of understanding for the situations of others. Our God truly is a remarkable God, and T.C.Morton truly is a wonderful blessing and saint.

I kow the author personally and am in the book also. She has managed to come through this ordeal and have a "normal" life. This is a great book and I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars The author is so honest and open about her life........1998-01-14

Very powerful "in your face" honest, passionate, challenging, earthy, direct, thought-provoking, forceful and daring look at the author's life of abuse, and her ability to forgive. It will change people's lives. Teaches a great lesson about forgiveness. Should be made into a television mini-series.
