Book Description
Alfred Byrd Graf is probably the most widely traveled plant explorer of the world's tropics and subtropics. Horticulturist, botanist, and professional photographer, he has roamed the earth in the spirit of Von Humboll, Darwin, and David Fairchild earlier in the 19th and 20th centuries, in search of exotic botanicals to add to the enlarging horticulture of the world. Among the honors received by the author are the award of the large Gold Medal of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Certificate of Merit of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Distinguished Service Award of the Horticultural Society of New York, a Citation Award of the American Horticultural Society, and the Tercentenary Medalliou of the State of New Jersey. IN 1967 he was invested with the Sarah Champman Francis Medal of the Garden Club of America for outstanding literary achievement. In Pittsburgh, in 1972, Alfred Graf was elected to horticulture's hall of fame, the highest distinction given by the society of American Florists, and in 1978he was awarded the doctor of Science degree.
His most recent publications are TROPICA, Color-ama of Exotic Plants with 7000 photos incl. Plants indoors. Also Hortica (8100 photos), Color Cyclopedia of Garden Flora in all Climates showing Hardiness Zones.
He is the President and founder of Roehrs Company, Book division.

Tropica Color Cyclopedia of Exotic Plants and Trees.......2005-12-13
I own the 5th edition. I glanced through a few pages (after having spent hours on the Internet researching tropical plants for my personal tropical garden) and had to buy it right then and there! I did not want to chance not being able to find it again. It's the best! I can't foresee ever having to wonder what any other tropical plant looks like! I've found plants in this book that I could not identify on the web or through local nurseries. I was not able to put this book down for hours after it's purchase and continue to use it almost daily. Totally worth the $185 price! If I'd lost it on the way home from having just purchased it, I'd be right back trying to buy another!
TROPICA.......2003-04-26
This book is the ultimate, before software, computers and Wal-Mart salespersons... .a book of this magnitude was and is still the Bible of horticulture.Alfred Graf, travels the world to bring the reader an astounding volume of plants both rare and usual, not only color photos but origins as well, which happens to be the best indicator of how a plant will thrive.I've owned this book for over twenty years, even replacing it after it was stolen. What else can I say...oh yeah,...Chrisalidocarpus Lutescens.
Tropica no Nonsense!.......2002-03-13
I recently got the chance to look over a copy of this book , and although I didn't get a chance to read it extensively nor in depth, I got the feeling that this was and is, one book , that no plant loving individuals library, should be with out. It is with out a doubt , a must have if you can get your hands on a copy.

Gorgeous series.......2003-11-24
I own this and all the Country Garden series of cookbooks. They are all visually gorgeous, and all written by professional chefs. Each book surrounds a featured ingredient which is seasonal. I must admit that many of the recipes could be considered "chi-chi," but for cookbook collectors, this series is really wonderful. I'm sorry they stopped adding to these books, and very sorry that they are going out of print.

System of a Down 2007 Wall Calendar
ASIN: 0743457412
Release Date: 2002-10-08 |
Book Description
From Serj Tankian, lead vocalist for critically acclaimed band System of a Down, comes a striking debut poetry collection highlighting his best work of the past eight years.
Like System of a Down's platinum-selling second album, Toxicity -- hailed by Rolling Stone as "a bouquet of smart rock and ardent social argument" and by SPIN as "the sound of now" -- Tankian's poetic style is willfully eclectic. Sometimes introspective, sometimes direct and cutting, these poems deal with subjects as wide-ranging as euthanasia and the nature of time itself.
Featuring original artwork created by Sako Shahinian, a young Los Angeles-based artist, Cool Gardens is honest, heartfelt, and humorous -- a talented artist at his uncompromising best.

Occasionally insightful, mostly incomprehensible.......2007-04-02
This reminds me a lot of my journals and songs from about age 15-23. That's in no way saying that Serj is an angsty teen-ager, just that it was probably very satisfying to write it and I'm sure it makes sense to him, but probably not to many others. There's a brilliant comprehensible line here and there, but much of it almost seems like automatic writing with a little bit of word play added. The closest thing I can compare it to is Burroughs. If you enjoy digging through the non-sense to get to the gems of thought, check this out. It makes good bathroom reading. OR if you're into psychedelic drugs it may also make much more sense, until you're down again that is. Long live System of a Down! Keep fighting the "good" fight Serj.
Orange Lights with a Flux.......2006-12-27
Well, in the beginning, I was a rather obsessed Serj fan. Of course, I had heard of Cool Gardens, and since I was a poetry reader, I wanted to get it. I searched all over for it, even when I went to L.A. My friend had recently ordered it from Amazon for me for Christmas. I finished reading it, and I was greatly confused. Yes, I understood where he was coming from with all the poems, but did he have to use such words? Did he, honestly? Half the book I was unfortunately unable to comprehend. So many words he had used that I didn't understand, and I was making a list of words to define, and I was up to the 13th poem when I stopped, for I had already gotten about 40 or so words! I got a bad version anyway, since I only got 94 pages instead of 96. It's good poetry, since my own poetry is very similar to Serj's, and it has meaning. You will often give a chuckle or smile of understanding when reading these works. This was a good book, may lessen your likings of Serj, but it's still a good read. Yet, be prepared for tough words!
I got a signed version! Deep, with odd parts mixed in........2006-03-02
This book is so deep and philosphical. I never liked poetry before, and I only like this book for it. Serj amazes me with his talent. I actually ordered it off of serjicalstrike.com, i think thats the name. I received it, and on the inside cover, Serj had SIGNED IT. This is officially my most prized possesion. Oh, and buy Serart. It's wierd but extemely fun and entertaining. Support Serj in everything he does because if he continues like this, he will RULE THE WORLD! Just kidding, but he amazes the crap out of me. Definently worth the money. Buy it! If you feel as strongly as I do about System of a down and serj, [...]. Serj RULES!

Whether you like SOAD or not, anyone can appreciate this poetry book for its face value. He does a good job at protraying our modern society the way he sees it, and it's damn real... If you like saul williams' "said the shotgun to the head," you should pick this up

Gorgeous and useful as source of inspiration.......2006-10-29
This book has some innovative pools -- especially the one under a set of glass stairs in the entryway of a London building. There are indoor pools, outdoor pools, indoor-outdoor pools, the now-ubiquitous "infinite edge" pools and even "rustic" pools that look like natural ponds. Gorgeous! The book also covers Jacuzzis and pool-related structures, such as cabanas, waterfalls, and so on, but the focus here is high-end "cool" pools.

Great Projects; Great Book!.......2000-09-15
Great book and projects for kids! I bought one to do projects with my Brownie troop -- then went back and bought two for my kids' teachers! Very kid friendly, uses materials that are common and great illustrations!
Comprehensize Gardening Fun for Kids.......2000-04-08
The book has it all covered. From the basics and safety to creating flower or vegetable projects. Each project has a list of items you need and step-by-step instructions. In some cases you'll also see a piece on what to expect next. Projects are environmentally friendly due to the recycling of items that are typically thrown away. Plant zones and what grows best in a zone will help the young gardener.
The colorful illustrations as well as pictures add to the overall appeal to kids. Each project is also identified with a skill scale so they (you) can easily tell when they may need adult help or supervision.

Using flamboyant plants to evoke tropical gardens is the hottest trend in the gardening world, perhaps best described as the "banana and canna" style of garden design. Hot Plants for Cool Climates makes clear, for those of us without greenhouses or the time and muscles to dig and wrap plants for winter, that this look can be achieved by using tropical-looking hardy plants or by planting container gardeners that can be moved indoors before first frost.
Most tropical plants are perennial in their native habitats, and if we lived in Hawaii, we too could grow agaves, Elephant's Ear, and Angel's Trumpet outdoor year-round. For those of us who garden in less benign climates, the authors give instructions on mulching and wrapping such plants to protect them from freezes. It involves straw and burlap and leaves the plants looking like mummified little soldiers, but able to withstand temperatures 20 degrees lower than without protection.
The gardens pictured in the plentiful color photographs are certainly tempting, as they overflow with huge leaves, flashy foliage, exotic flowers, ponds and vines, all combined into the rich tapestry of a jungle. You can almost smell the jasmine and hear the chattering of the parrots. Thankfully, the chapter on hardy plants for the tropical look (bamboos, grasses, hardy bananas, ferns, Petasites) puts this style of garden within the reach of most gardeners, no matter if they live in Minnesota or California. Especially useful are the appendices, which list plants for a variety of design situations and a source list for the plants recommended throughout the book. --Val Easton
Book Description
The most exciting new trend in garden design is the lush look of the tropics -- no matter where you live! If, like so many gardeners, you're a little bored with pastel flowers and rigid borders, welcome to the jungly garden, where the plants have huge shiny leaves, boldly colored foliage, ferny textures, and flame-colored flowers. Now that garden centers and nurseries are stocking banana plants, elephant ears, giant ferns, and Amazon lilies, you can have your own tropical garden no matter where you live. Whether you want to go the whole way and turn your suburban yard into a jungle paradise or simply want to grow a few tropical plants in containers, you'll add pizzazz to your garden and your gardening experience by indulging in these exciting new plants. How do you grow tropical plants in a cold climate? The way you grow annuals or other tender perennials -- you plant new ones each season or winter them over indoors. And you can even include hardy plants with a tropical look to augment the true denizens of the junble. If you've ever bemoaned the sorry appearance of an August garden, tropicals are the perfet answer -- their leaves stay fresh and they bloom undaunted by summer's worst heat. In HOT PLANTS FOR COOL CLIMATES, you will find both inspirational photographs and solid information on how to design a flamboyant tropical landscape and grow the plants that make it happen no matter where you live.
Customer Reviews:
When is part two of hot plants for cool climates comming out?.......2006-02-25
This bood is exactly what I was looking for. What plant to use to create the «tropical» look for cold country as far as Québec. Great tips, even for a long time gardener as I am, I have fund lots of plants that I did'nt know we could over wintered in cold storage. I really hope that they would be a part II of the same book, which will illustrated some nordic landscaping with a exotic look, using the plant showing in this book. Thank's again
Denis, Montréal, Québec
Do You Crave a Lush Landscape?.......2005-11-22
I've always admired the gorgeous plants and lush landscaping that one could do in the tropics. This book tells you how to do that without moving to Florida. The authors have good credentials for a book of this type.
Information about the authors from the publisher's website:
"Susan A. Roth is an award-winning writer and photographer. She cultivates her own eclectic garden in Stony Brook, New York.
Dennis Schrader is one of the foremost experts on tropical plants in the Northeast. He co-owns and -operates Landcraft Environments, a wholesale greenhouse in Mattituck, New York."
pretty hot.......2005-09-07
The back of the book is helpful, the pictures throught the book are good, but not really inspiring. I'd recommend this book for beginners getting into tropicals. but if your looking for more this wouldn't be the best book for you.
Chicago Bananas and pineapples.......2004-06-18
Tropical gardening here in the the Midwest has been a passion of mine for over 20 years. I never thought of it as different just big annuals. Thats what I liked about Susan's and Dennis's approach to this book. It was really laid back there just plants was the feeling I was getting from reading this book. They didn't make it complicated. I liked the real expectations they had in the book no hype about growing you own table ready bananas in Maine or something crazy like that just pure and simple you are growing them for the foliage effect don't get carried away. Bananas are just big cannas and brumansias are really big coleus they put it simple and gave great advice and the garden shots are great a real inspiration. The over wintering section was worth the price of the book.
If only the content lived up to the title!.......2002-10-29
When I first saw the title of this book, I thought it was exactly what I was looking for. But that turned out to be because conceptual accuracy was sacrificed for verbal cleverness on the cover. The book has little to do with gardening in temperate zones (horticulturally understood to be climates free from extremes of heat or cold), or cool climates (horticulturaly understood to mean climates with heat-deprived summers). To the contrary, the book presumes that the gardener lives where there is a significant season of sustained heat, during which time plants will quickly establish themselves from plant-and-pull frost protection measures or regenerate as root-hardy returning perennials. The book is aimed at gardeners in the East; West Coast gardeners will probably be happier with books that advocate attaining the "tropical look" with plants that feature year-round outdoor hardiness and don't require summer heat to perform well.

I bought this book for my 11 year old granddaughter. She loves these Friendship Bracelets, as most of the kids do now. There are so many easy to follow patterns in this book! The supplies (embroidery thread and beads) are cheap. The instructions are very clear. Anyone can follow the patterns.
