Book Description
Have some toe-tapping, tongue-flapping fun with this brilliant new book by Newbery Award-winner Paul Fleischman and gifted illustrator Beppe Giacobbe. You'll have to see, shout, share, perform, and experience it to believe it!
Two's company . . . four's a blast! Especially when you're joining voices with family or friends. Around the kitchen table, on the front steps, or in the classroom, these rousing, rib-tickling, delicious poems will fill you full of the joy of reading aloud. Paul Fleischman won the Newbery Medal for JOYFUL NOISE: POEMS FOR TWO VOICES. Now he invites us to make more word music.
Settle back and chant "The Quiet Evenings Here," as Grandma rocks, the clock tick-tocks, Sister hums, raindrops rap, and no one cares a hoot for the noisy, fast-paced world outside. Delight in the gossipy "Seventh-Grade Soap Opera," alive with whispers, invitations, and hearsay about who's fibbing, eavesdropping, or holding hands with whom. Let the poignant "Ghosts' Race" reveal the secret hungry ghosts know—and their spirited take on mortal mealtime. Arranged in color-coded groups of four lines, one line per speaker, each poem weaves a rich tapestry of rhythm, sense, and sound.
Written by Paul Fleischman, the renowned author of WESLANDIA, and evocatively illustrated by Beppe Giacobbe, this hip, innovative, and extraordinary book will have readers of all ages sounding off.
Customer Reviews:
Great fun--can anybody actually do this???.......2005-01-04
Those who loved "A Joyful Noise" and "I Am Phoenix" will feel that they've hit upon a treasure trove in this group of poems for four voices. The only small disadvantages: this book only contains three poems (maybe somebody should write a sequel?), and the arrangement of the color-coded lines can be a bit confusing. (Each "voice," or color, can have more than one line on a page.)
So, have fun. And then go write a few masterpieces of your own. Keep the Big Talk going.

Customer Reviews:
Quite a departure from the norm.......2007-02-20
Poirot is confronted by a quartet of super criminals in this rather bizarre departure from the normal circumstances Christie uses to tell the tales of her Belgian detective. The reader is supposed to imagine that the only thing preventing world domination by this group is the existence of Hercule Poirot and his "little grey cells." I have to be honest; this is a leap I was not willing to take. James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, even Doc Savage, is a better fit for this storyline. I must admit I was intrigued by how Christie tried to shoehorn her creation into this mix of intrigue, espionage, and Fu Manchu. It's not successful, but I was entertained by the overall strangeness of this outing. Read it for the experience of seeing Hercule Poirot: Action Hero!
Lots of Action!.......2006-10-28
I have read all of the Poirot stories; and I find that this is my favorite, second only to Curtain. I like it because it is very different than the other books of the series. Poirot is much more a man of action, and the killer stays ahead of Poirot for most of this book. (Poirot is usually more in control early on in his cases.) There is also much more danger with Poirot being called upon more than once to save Hastings' life.
This story showcases Hastings' innocence and trusting nature more than any other book of the series. Because of Hastings' personality, Poirot has to resort to tricking him to effectively solve the case. The creation of Poirot's twin brother is one of the most interesting factors in this tale. Agatha Christie tricks her readers a bit too, but finally lets us in on the truth at the end.
The Big Four.......2006-06-16
This book was very well written. Christie presents to us four master-mind criminals, one from China, another is an American millionaire, the third a well-known French women, and an elusive #4 who is a master of disguise, they are to do battle with Poirot and Hastings. The book itself was less of a mystery book than an epic battle between the good and the bad. As readers will find out, this book is filled with murders and action. Poirot was at his best, especially with Hastings as a solid partner. Their relationship was almost like Watson and Holmes. And indeed, one will find many similarities between this book and those of Sherlock Holme's adventures. For example, the "introduction" of Achilles Poirot as a brother of Hercules. And the way Poirot sometimes dised on Hastings as not being intellectually sound because he was not using his "gray cells inside his head" Indeed, along with suspense and action there are also a bit of humor. And I'd say that the ending, even though it was kind of cursory, was still spetacular and I'm sure most readers out there will love this book. Overall, this was one of Christie's best novels.
My Favourite Agatha Christie Novel...........2005-12-18
I must confess that I have tried to read all of Agatha Christies novels with Hercule Poirot as the main detective. Of all these, this is my favourite, for a number of reasons. I agree with a fellow reviewer, that Poirot is at his best, and most interesting, when Catain Hastings is on board. The synophis is that behind the Worlds diasters/affairs are four people. Poirot takes them on, with a LITTLE help from Hastings. The inclusion of Hastings is a masterstroke by christie, as we see events through his romantic, simple mind, and he addresses points/questions that would often would love to yell out to poirot. This is Boys own stuff, and is riveting to see Poirot stretched to combat this mysterious sect. Great read
Very good.......2005-11-10
A book without a mystery, but with much action. If you like other Agatha Christie novels, this might not be for you, as it is more like an action "lara croft" game, rather than an adventure book.
Those that like things changing constantly will love it.
Recommended as one of the best.

Customer Reviews:
Reads like you are out fishing with your Dad.......2003-06-20
Full of great fishing knowledge for the beginner and advanced saltwater angler. Covers fishing with live/natural/artificial baits from boat/shore using various methods. Imparts practical knowledge that can only be gained from years of experience.
Catch More of the Big Four.......2003-02-09
This is an outstanding read and a very useful guide for fishing bluefish, stripers (called rock in my region), fluke (flounder), and weakfish. This easy reading book offers practical advice for fishing from boat or shore, live bait or artificials and details techniques I know work and others I can't wait to try. It also features very useful information on too often overlooked subjects of cleaning and cooking your catch. I highly recommend this book.

This Island Isn't Big Enough for the Four of Us!.......2006-06-17
ISBN 0064402037 - Pete and Scott are going to camp out on a deserted island. Pete sees himself as a rugged explorer and imagines they'll be conquering the wilderness. It's a pity that their tent is a canvas replica of Hansel and Gretel's gingerbread house. But it'll be okay - it's a deserted island, no one will see them, right? The last thing he expected was to find two girls on their island! And the worst thing he could have imagined has happened... they have a camera.
Jill and Sunny are on the island with Jill's aunt Katherine, who is a photographer. They have a few great laughs at the expense of the boys, who set out to get revenge. One night, the boys discover another person on the island. Cornelius lives, during his summers, in a complex treehouse that he built and adds on to all the time. Cornelius is smitten with Katherine, but things go badly from the beginning. Turtle Island becomes the new site of the battle of the sexes. How will they get through their time on the island without killing each other?
Funny and lighthearted, This Island is a book both boys and girls will anjoy - and how rare is that? Choose this one for summer reading, for two reasons. Camping, of course. Then there's the Perseid meteor shower, which is mentioned in the book and peeks in mid-August. Sneak some education in!
This Island Isn't Big Enough For the Four of Us.......2005-10-27

When they arrive they arrive they find out that two girls who are camping there too, later on the boys are embarrassing themselves when the girls are taking pictures. The main idea of the book is that the boys are trying to fool the girls. But the girls are too good. The boys cant fool them, and in the end, the boys and girls have a flag race to see who is the all time champion of Turtle Island at last. The author has a tie.
hilarious pageturner.......2003-02-26
I got this book when I was 9 and I loved it immediately for its phantastic adventurous plot and twists. I think it is the best book I had as a child, making me laugh from the first page to the second last. It is so hilariously funny I still love to read it today - I'm 22 now and passing it on to my little niece. I know she will enjoy it as much as I did...
A Time to Laugh.......2001-03-20
When Scott and his friend Pete think that they are going to a deserted island for five days they don't know whats in store for them. On the way to the island, Pete and Scott fall out of there canoe, they get laughed at by two girls. Scott and Pete know that they now have to get along on an island with two girls and find a way to get them back.
I liked this book because of all the pranks, jokes, and skrew ups that go on between the boys and girls. There is also a mystery on the island that Pete and Scott must find out. I reccomend this book to anyone who has a sence of humor and adventure.
This book would be good for both boys and girls........2000-10-16

Customer Reviews:
This is the one to buy!!!.......2007-08-30
If you are interested in learning how to play swing rhythm guitar-buy this book. Freddie Green was the master of swing rhythm guitar and the author took his chair in the Count Basie band when Freddie retired. The author breaks down his style in an accesible way, step-by-step. The audio examples are very helpful and of high quality-no cheesy synth rhythm section. The chord voicings, inversions, and substitutions are explained in detail as well as a chapter on how to expand or reduce the harmony of a tune. I've bought two other swing guitar instrucitonal books before I found this one and it is far better than the others.
A concise, clear way to develop those rhythm chops........2002-11-14
Here's a book I really wish I had back in high school jazz band. I used to go nuts with the charts back then, trying to figure out voicings and get all the notes in where the arranger wrote "Gb#11b13+" or some such, when that's really the last think you should be trying to do in a big band. But a good rhythm guitarist- as I leanred later- should concentrate on *rhythm*, using minimal voicings to develop a line that really acts like a counterpoint to the bass line. Forget all the altered tones; stick with 3rds and 7ths and develop good movement- think Freddie Greene in Count Basie's band. Simple voicings and solid rhythm.
This book is all about learning those voicings, learning where to subsctitute, and where to simplify to build interesting, musical lines. At that it succeeds marvelously. It doesn't assume any prior skill or knowledge, other than being generally familair with the guitar, knowing some basic chords and having some familiarity with the swing style. All chords are diagrammed as well as written out, so it's easy and convenient for both reader and non-reader alilke.
It's is a great tool for the beginning swing guitarist, the high school or college jazz band player looking for an organized way to approach rhythm guitar, or an experienced guitarist looking to expand his or her style. I've given it four stars instead of five as I think it could be organized a little bit better, and with a little more explanation in parts, but overall it's an excellent book.

A book that changed the sports book genre for the better.......2006-12-05
Books about sports stars can be dated in two ways. BBF (Before Ball Four) and ABF (After Ball Four). Before this book came out, sports stars were mythologized in print and the books had a cardboard-style sameness to them. According to the BBF books baseball stars such as Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth and Ted Williams did nothing but pull for their team and engage in some occasional boyish antics. In other words, heroes through and through.
The reality was quite different, Babe Ruth was an incorrigible woman chaser, heavy drinker and was verbally cruel to people. There is the classic story of a group of baseball writers playing a game of cards on a train taking the Yankees on a road trip. A naked woman followed by an equally naked Ruth ran past them. One writer remarked, "It is a good thing I didn't see that because otherwise I would have to write about it." Mickey Mantle was a heavy drinker; he often played so heavily hung over that he had trouble keeping his eyes open. Williams was not a team player, he was at times an indifferent fielder and he refused to enlarge the strike zone by even an inch in order to drive in a run that would tie or win a game. There is a classic story that he once hit a home run that got his team back in the game. However, rather than accepting the accolades of his teammates, he sat in the dugout cussing himself for swinging at a pitch that was a ball.
Bouton's book changed all that. He described the players as human, with all their faults. In the early sixties Bouton had one of the best fastballs in the game, his pitching helped propel the Yankees to the American league pennant and some argued that in 1964, he was the best pitcher in baseball. However, in 1965 he hurt his arm and could no longer throw the heat. In 1969, he made a semi-comeback throwing the knuckleball for the expansion Seattle Pilots. Even on a marginal team he was at best a marginal player. This book is a combination of his actions with the Pilots as well as a reflection of his time with the Yankees. Therefore, it is easy to detect a strain of bitterness at the loss of the glory days of the 1964 Yankees. Nevertheless, while many people have decried the book, no one has ever come forward to disprove his statements about the escapades of the players. Many drank heavily and took drugs, most were sexually promiscuous, and at times they were contemptuous of the fans.
Since "Ball Four" came out, the books about sports stars have been more honest. This, in my opinion, is good for the fans, the games and even the players. The nation has become much more knowledgeable and realistic in how it views heroes. It would have been impossible to continue the artificial presentations of the people who so fascinate us when they play for pay.

John Ashton, the editor who brought us In Six Days and On the Seventh Day, has done it again with this compelling new book that is a must-read for all Christians. In this exciting new book, Ashton brings together the evidence of 24 scholars from the fields of science, archaeology, and philosophy to present an irrefutable argument for the existence of God. Experts such as Werner Gitt, Andrew Snelling, and Eric Svendsen combine their knowledge in their respective fields and present a compelling and persuasive case to skeptics. Although written by experts, this persuasive book is easily understood by the layperson. An excellent tool for Christians who want to broaden their knowledge of apologetics and learn to defend their faith more easily, this book is an essential for any Christian or churchs library.

A Negative Review.......2007-01-29
A Christian friend bought this book for me as a present. I started reading it with an open mind but only managed to read the first 4 essays within. I have a high school education of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and am currently doing a PhD in Mathematics. I say this with all honesty: every time I read a piece of the book and put it down, I felt dumber!
The simple truth is that the "experts" who wrote each of the first four essays really have no idea. They often make very direct false scientific statements. Meanwhile they propose that they are "scientific". I then flipped half way through the book and read a paragraph where the writer was trying to suggest that radioactive decay can be sped up. Almost all scientists understand that it is a random process that can not be changed. Therefore, the half-life of radioactive decay can not be changed (sped up or slowed down).
If you are a Christian who is wishing to make yourself feel intelligent whilst upholding your faith, this book is for you. However, if you are an independent scientific thinker, I would not recommend this book!
An excellent read.......2006-04-11
The Big Argument is a response to the arguments used by atheists to try to defend their position. As I have read much atheist literature, I am very aware of their basic arguments, which boil down to the claim that evolutionism puts God out of a job, the existence of evil, and the putative problems with the Bible. All of these arguments are dealt with, in my opinion, fairly well in this 403 page fine print book. The advantage of this work is, 24 scientists, professors, and professional writers each deal with their area of expertise. As a result, the book is a well written, authoritative well thought out summary of the topic focused on in each chapter. This scholarly work was edited by the highly successful author, John Aston, to be assessable to the educated layman. The 18 Ph.D's included cover, not only the science, but the theological issues as well. This collection of writings will be of interest to, not only scientists, but anyone interested in intelligent design, creationism, evolution, theology, and science in general. One fact that surprised me was that there are only 24 well established dinosaur genera. I had assumed that many more than this existed. Also, the information in the section on the immune system was new to me. No gradual progression of the immune system exists in the natural world (and I checked the references given to support this claim). Several very different types exist, but all are enormously complex.
