5 out of 5 stars good series.......2007-02-22

nikki and michael, human psyhic and vamp, working together to solve a case that may be more supernatural than nikki thinks. Then there's a "love vibe" going on with nikki and michael that is obivous. good story, not big on the romance part, with a little suspense and intrigue.

5 out of 5 stars A must read!.......2003-12-29

I loved this book, it is about a psychic private detective and her trek through the dangerous vampire filled streets of Lyndhurst. As a former orphan and, street smart kid Nikki James is used to the trouble filled streets, so when she follows a girl(someone she is tracking for her job) into the town's "Haunted house", she thinks she knows what to expect.
Nikki is in for an unwanted surprise when she finds out that she really doesn't know everything about what goes bump in the night.

Because of her psychic abilities she is a high prize for two feuding vampires who have chosen the town of Lyndhurst as their battle ground. But before she knows what has hit her she finds herself on more than friendly terms with one of the vampires. As the story progresses you, the reader, with find yourself face to face with a sociopathic vampire and a strangely erotic vampire romance.

This book is a must read for all vampire lovers. Five stars!

1 out of 5 stars Jenni.......2003-07-17

I am an avid reader, often 2 to 3 books per week and this book was less than entertaining. I stuck with it because I kept hoping it would get better. Romance, what romance? There was a kiss, a caress and then it was the next morning. The plot kept leaving me hanging. The main characters would be in some heavy situation against the enemy and the next thing you know it's the next day and their escape or an explanation never materialized. Very disappointing. I will not read the follow up!

5 out of 5 stars Fast moving vampire tale.......2002-10-14

Nikki James is a private investigator with psychic powers. She is trying to track down the daughter of a powerful man. That daughter is in the power of a vampire. Michael Kelly is tracing that vampire Jasper, who is the killer of his brother. Michael is also a vampire and he is drawn to Nikki. Nikki is not the most trusting person in the world and can you really trust a vampire?

This was a very fast moving story, no down time at all. The characters are vivid and the story line twists and turns more than enough to keep it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A Paranormal Romance to fall in love with!.......2002-08-24

Keri Arthur's Dancing with The Devil is a story about the supernatural, and not just vampires. It's intense, real--well sort of , and so believable I was scared, fascinated and definitely enthralled.

Nikki James, a private investigator, is on a new case. A rich and troubled teenager needs to be followed and rescued. But evil is waiting! The unlikely protector comes in the shape of Michael Kelly. Michael is a hunter and a vampire... Sounds good? You bet!

Dancing With The Devil is scary as hell, not for its gory details but for the extremely passionate and very often threatening atmosphere so aptly created by Keri Arthur. I was kept on my toes with fear and was intrigued by how willing I was to accept the characters supernatural abilities as given and normal.

I felt completely and utterly mesmerized by the story and its author's voice and I can "only" highly recommend it! I fell in love, cried, laughed, and I ended up heaving a big sigh of longing for its happy ending. Thank you Keri Arthur for reintroducing me to the vampire novel genre.

Jose Limon has a way of weaving a story into an athropological study that brings the aspect of culture that he is studying to life. He keeps the reader interested by making the stories of his field work part of his studies.

Anyone who is interested in learning about and understanding the life of Tejanos/Mexican-Americans in Texas should read this scholarly work.

It shouldn't be a fascinating read, this book--it really shouldn't. It's just higher gossip about how Wallis Simpson took a younger lover after her marriage to Edward, and how she and said lover enjoyed nights of "nonpenetrative and principally oral sex." I mean, who cares? Shouldn't our minds be on higher things?

The trouble is, it's all absolutely fascinating. The lover was the mad, bad, and dangerous-to-know Jimmy Donahue: grandson of Woolworth's founder Frank W. Woolworth, heir to millions, and considered to be dashingly good-looking. (From the photos in the book, he looks a bit like a baby-faced bore, but maybe having those millions in the bank skewed perceptions of him, somewhat.) Donahue could fly a plane, could speak several languages, was a marvelous raconteur, and, on top of all this, was a promiscuous homosexual. That didn't stop him from forming a passionate friendship with Wallis, however, that soon turned into more than mere friendship. Wilson suggests that this constituted, on Wallis's part, perhaps "the greatest betrayal in history." Edward gave up his throne and kingdom for the woman he loved, only to have her take off with another man. However, it was never quite so simple as this. Edward didn't want a normal sexual relationship with Wallis, really--he got all of the satisfaction he wanted from playing with her feet--while she evidently continued to adore him, even if she found that the need for sexual satisfaction drove her into Donahue's arms. It might even have been that Edward knew, but didn't mind. The whole thing reads like some kind of royal soap opera, and, as such, it's absolutely riveting. --Christopher Hart, Amazon.co.uk

Book Description

The story of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor is one of the most romantic of all time: Edward VIII abdicated his throne and gave up an empire so that he could marry the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Very few people suspected, and even fewer actually knew, that the Duchess cuckolded him-and almost gave him up-for a gay playboy twenty years her junior.Blond and slender, Jimmy Donahue was the archetypal post-war playboy. He could fly a plane, speak several languages, play the piano, and tell marvelous jokes. People loved him for his wit, charm and personality. The grandson of millionaire Frank W. Woolworth, Jimmy knew he would never need to work. Instead, he set about carving for himself a career of mischief. Some said evil. Gay at a time when the homosexual act was still illegal, Jimmy was notorious within America's upper class, and loved to shock. Though press agents arranged for him to be seen with female escorts, his pursuits, until he met the Duchess of Windsor, were exclusively homosexual. He was thirty-five when he was befriended by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor in 1950. The Duchess was fifty-four, and despite the difference in age, there was an instant attraction. A burgeoning sexual relationship - a perverse sort of love - was formed between Jimmy and the Duchess. Together with the Duke, they became an inseparable trio, the closest of friends. As Jimmy had planned, the royal couple became obsessed with him. With information from surviving contemporaries, Dancing with the Devil is the extraordinary tale of three remarkable people and their unique and twisted relationship.

3 out of 5 stars Good writing..........2003-05-22

But, the story is so tawdry & Jimmy Donahue so scurvy, it's a hard read. The author presents information about his upbringing that tries to make you feel a little sympathy for Donahue but it's hard to feel sympathy for such a loser. The Duke & Duchess of Windsor were wastes of human beings, too. The more you read about them the more discouraged you get. What wasted opportunities! They could have done so much good but were such selfish, self-centered & STUPID people. No wonder the Royal Family can't stand to hear their names mentioned. The book reads kind of like a prolonged Dominick Dunne article in Vanity Fair.

4 out of 5 stars Take it to the beach..........2003-02-08

OK, so the author isn't going to win the Nobel Prize for Literature for this book. But why should he? It's a book about an affair. A tawdry affair at that.

Initially, I payed attention to the other reviewers and didn't buy the book. But I have a fascination with Wallis and Edward (as vapid as they might have been...)and wanted to know more about Wallis' relationship with Jimmy Donohue. I must have read at least 10 to 15 books about the couple, and despite what the one of the reviewers said, I've only come across a few rare references to him. This book fills in the gaps.

So is it great literature? No. Is it an interesting book? Yes, if you like the subject matter, and know something about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to begin with. I enjoyed the book.

1 out of 5 stars I'd had hopes, but..........2001-03-27

This book doesn't do much more than re-hash rumor, gossip and innuendo--and some facts--that I've already read in better-written, more thorough and scholarly biographies of the Windsors. I didn't notice any glaring inaccuracies; on the other hand, I didn't notice that the author broke any new ground. He seems to have relied heavily on previously published biographies of the Duke, the Duchess, and the British Royal Family in general, all of which a serious Windsorite will have already read. Also--let's face it--we read books like this one to be titillated, and the author fails utterly to titillate us. Save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Juicy subject, Pedestrian treatment.......2001-01-26

You'd think an author couldn't go wrong with this cast of characters, ultra chic jet set locations, and deliciously lewd sex play. But Christopher Wilson took all this potential and and threw it away with the writing style of a schoolboy whose book report was carelessly dashed off before class. Repetitive adjectives, lackluster prose, and unintelligible chapter beginnings and ends - I was hollering for the editor the entire read. I kept saying aloud "OK, that's a start, but now let's unearth some real dish, and show me the proof!" Gossip CAN be transformed into history with proper scholarship. This promising biography of three fascinatingly spoiled and twisted people disappointed me.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2001-01-16

3Dancing With the Devil : The Windsors and Jimmy Donahue2 is a sweeping adventure of scandal and euphoria among glitzy cafe society, adeptly brought to life by biographer Christopher Wilson.

In this case, the name 3Donahue,2 is directly related to a very famous name: Woolworth. When 35 & 102 chainstore mogul Frank Winfield Woolworth died in 1919, he left as part of his substantial legacy great hopes for his cherubic grandchildren. He visualized his heirs evolving into hardworking, benefic, God-fearing, and rational adults. But alas, if he did happen to look down from the heavens years later, I know that several of his descendants would have provoked a disgruntled sigh; including the spendthrift, serial divorcee Barbara Hutton...

But the mischievous, downright extraordinary exploits of his grandson Jimmy Donahue would have sent Woolworth longing for Divine intervention. The fact is that, the only thing Frank Woolworth and his grandson Jimmy shared (other than a notable gene pool) was a compulsion for the spotlight.

That compulsion, along with a host of others (some advantageous, most unsavory) are unveiled in this wonderful, fast-paced book. In Dancing With the Devil, we meet dashing Jimmy Donahue, a man who had entirely too much free time on his hands, and entirely too much money at his disposal. We learn that Jimmy1s access to money, along with his excessive adoration for luxury, his psychological baggage (he even witnessed the suicide of his manic depressive and bisexual father) and the questionable role model Jimmy found in his jetsetting mother --all combined to create an intriguing, complex and colorful personality. Wilson depicts an international playboy who defied reigning sexual taboos and balked at authority, yet was sometimes ridden by deep guilt. Donahue exhibited such random amounts of innocent rakishness and sensual greed; of hearfelt generosity and rash wastefulness-- that even his closest contemporaries were not sure what to think of him.

Wilson expertly peppers his historical accounts with authentic detail, smoothly leading us into post WWII Paris, then sweeping us back to the United States to the playgrounds of Palm Beach and Long Island. Clearly, Wilson did a great deal of research on this book, conducting scores of interviews and tracking down hard to find information.

Of course, Wilson1s readers are also treated to little known details about the odd triangle between Jimmy Donahue and the Windsors, thus providing an interesting account of the last untold episode in their lives.

As in Jimmy Donahue1s life, there is nary a dull moment in Dancing With the Devil. (Do check out the 3Acknowledgments2 which reads like a Who1s Who in and of itself). Definitely recommended!

    Book Description

"TAUT, COMPLEX AND CONSTANTLY SURPRISING . . . a tough tale, well told, that's twice as much fun because it's true."
    --The Flint Journal
It sounds like a plot torn right from the latest spy thriller: Russian women seducing U.S. Marines so that KGB agents could gain access to top-secret information at the American Embassy in Moscow. In fact, this infamous sex-for-secrets scandal was one of the most notorious espionage cases in Cold War history. At the center of the turmoil was a twenty-five-year-old Native American marine sergeant, Clayton Lonetree, who fell in love with Violetta Seina, a Russian woman who in turn recruited him as a spy for the KGB.
The story soon expanded to involve the CIA and diplomats on both sides of the Iron Curtain. But before the political frenzy was over, Lonetree was tried and sentenced to thirty years, and charges against everyone else were dropped. Now author Rodney Barker peels away the layers of this controversial case, painstakingly interviewing key U.S. military and intelligence figures, Russians and KGB agents, even Lonetree and Seina themselves, to uncover the long-concealed truth--and to answer the disturbing question: Was justice really served in Lonetree's court-martial or did he merely take the fall?
"A deft, fast-paced, and balanced account."

As distance education, distributed learning, virtual campuses, and digital libraries become more important for students, academic institutions can no longer rely on traditional methods to survive and prosper. In this landmark collection of essays, seven highly respected institutional, association, and financial leaders examine the challenges facing today's colleges and universities. They explore a number of critical issues, including how to deal with for-profit competition, how to build a powerful technological infrastructure, how to create administrative structures that reward and support technological innovation, and how to secure funding for such transformations.

      2 out of 5 stars Mediocre book.......1999-07-20

This book is a collection of essays. While the authors are indeed quite credible, the content leaves much to be desired. The book is long on problems, and short on solutions. Moreover, difficult topics, such as strategic outsourcing, surviving information warfare, designing a new staffing profile, choosing which private sector practices to adopt and which to avoid, and issues of institutional leadership are mostly ignored. This isn't a bad book; I just didn't learn anything new from it.

Dancing With Devils by Robert D. Emerson This book is a semi-autobiographical portrayal of Bob Emerson's life experiences and the influence his father, a former Chatham County, North Carolina sheriff, had on his career in law enforcement. The story echoes his exposure to austere conditions and conservative life styles during a period of temperance in a rural Southern community during the early and mid 20th century. Emerson was involved in the pursuit of criminals with his father at an early age, and in his book he reflects on how these experiences influenced his decision to pursue law enforcement as a profession. Also, Emerson provides exceptional and sometimes humorous accounts of crimes he investigated while a special agent with the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The reader will gain an understanding of these agencies and their investigative roles through Emerson's detailed accounts of some fascinating cases he investigated. Anyone who is interested in law enforcement in rural America and especially in North Carolina in the 1950s and 60s would greatly enjoy reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, first person perspective of a TRUE lawman.......1999-02-03

Emerson's series of law enforcement "tales" presents an interesting weave of the inner thoughts of man who was "born" into law enforcement and made law enforcement his vocation and his passion. I was reared in Chatham County, North Carolina and grew up under the jurisdiction of the author's father, the long term Sheriff of Chatham County, John Emerson. Many stories still circulate of the integrity and ability of Sheriff Emerson. The author obviously carried the integrity and "savvy" of his father into his interesting career. The book is well written and fun to read for any person that is interested in law enforcement and stories of personal integrity. A great sequel to this book would be a similarly written biography of the author's father.

5 out of 5 stars great insights into law enforcement in another age.......1998-10-05

This book gives a credible view of life in rural North Carolina in the 1940s and 1950s that influenced a young man to pursue a life of law enforcement. This autobiographical work graphically depicts young Emerson's development from a teenager following in the footsteps of his sheriff father to one of Hoover's FBI agents in the early 60s. The story is told realistically and fluidly with the author's integrity palpable on every page. I highly recommend this work to anyone interested in criminal history. It is nearly reminicent of the bildungsroman genre, as a rural teenage boy develops into a Special Agent Man. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, keeps you in suspense.......1998-10-02

This book is one that you will not want to put down, very explicit on a lawmans life and the effects it has on one's personal life. A must buy!

        4 out of 5 stars A solid insight into real law-enforcement activities........1998-09-11

A first-hand account of cases handled by a career law-enforcement officer. Each chapter is a different case. Hard to put down. I wanted to keep right on going. The book provides an appreciation for the behind-the-scenes work done by investigative officers, and the interrogation techniques that lead to confessions. An excellelent contrast to the unreal picture of law enforcement that we have been given in the popular media. I look forward to a sequel from the same author.

        5 out of 5 stars Good Read!.......2003-06-06

I started reading this book and couldn't put it down! I ended up finishing it one sitting. It's a true story of a woman battling with bipolar disorder. Whether you have this disorder or not, it really helps you understand it better, just by reading her experiences. Some parts made me laugh and some parts made me cry. I recommend it!
