5 out of 5 stars comprehensive book to overcome fear of flying.......2007-09-13

This is the best book on fear of flying on the market today. As a phobia counselor, I have purchased this book over and over again for people to read. The book addresses the psychological reasons for the fear of flying in a well written, understandable manner. Then it gives wonderful tips for how to handle the anxiety from that fear whether it be wanting to be in control, claustrophobia, height phobia or fear of crashing. The second part of the book is written by a pilot who explains everything anyone would want to know about how a plane flies, turbulence, what the noises are, etc. The more a fearful flyer knows about his reactions to his fear the better off he/she will be. This book covers it all.

5 out of 5 stars The Complete Package.......2007-05-19

For international buyers, just note that the author is speaking to an American audience. Most of his statements are in the context of the US Airline industry. Although his claims might be more difficult to apply in your local context, generally, they should hold true for most major airlines across the world.

Nevertheless, Flying Without Fear is a complete package. It builds its thesis by letting you understand the physiological nature of your fear and providing you with techniques to cope with them, specifically in relation to pre-flight anxiety. The techniques he provides are very, very effective. In fact, you can apply them to other stressful situations in your life. :)

It then provides you with a very detailed FAQ on how the airline industry guarantees your safety - from pilots, to flight crew, mechanics and air traffic controllers - which most likely will alleviate all your worries. After which, the author provides another detailed FAQ on the science of flight. Both chapters will hopefully dispel all irrational beliefs that produce the anxiety.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!! Life Changing...literally.......2007-01-09

I have always been terrified of flying. Because of this fear I have passed up countless trips around the world, with people I very much enjoy, because I could not handle the thought of being in the air. Nothing else helped, and I wasn't thrilled about taking medication to fly. This book changed my life. It is packed with comprehensive facts, practical relaxation techniques, explainations, etc. The author tells you about every noise you might hear, what each beep and light means, and offers comforting statistics. I even read the book aloud and recorded it to take onto the plane during take off and was immediatly comforted. I read this book a year ago and have since flown 9 TIMES! My friend has also read and used this book with wonderful results. All without sweaty palms and bulging eyes. This book was a godsend and I highly recommend it to anyone whose life is being put on hold because of a simple fear....and it really is a simple fear once you learn to control it. BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars I had sworn off flying for almost 6 years, until..........2006-05-10

This book is amazing. I used to have paralyzing nightmares about plane crashes and had given up flying for almost 6 years. I swore to never fly again. I picked up this book, almost 2 months later I have flown 4 times and it gets easier each time. Please buy it..It's amazing I am telling you!

4 out of 5 stars Only cured while I'm reading the book..........2006-05-03

This is actually a pretty good book, but it hasn't helped me overcome my fears. When I have anxiety about a flight - usually months in advance - I'll pick up this book and it helps. It doesn't help while I'm on the plane though. Of course, that's no fault of the book.

The most helpful aspect of the book is learning that many, many people share my fear and irrational thoughts.

I'd say that if you're like me, and have extreme fear of flying, this book really isn't going to help you.

5 out of 5 stars Highly rated.......2006-12-12

I am normally a very logical, rational person. Fear of flying is defintely an irrational fear. I relaxed with this book, would bring it on flights with me. In fact the last flight I took was so relaxing that I left the book on the plane! If you happen to see it on an Air Canada plane, hope you can use it!

5 out of 5 stars This book brought me relief!.......2004-01-23

I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified (and ill) in the middle of the night with uncontrollable anxiety weeks before the flight. Just the thought of getting on a plane sent me into an emotional and physical tailspin (pardon the pun). I too, knew that it was irrational, but the fear was so viceral and so out of my control, I finally sought help. A therapist suggested that the anxiety and subsequent vomitting was due to an overdose of adrenaline, and that is about all the help she could offer. I bought this book after reading the other reviews on line. I read it in a day, and over the next three flights I took after reading it, each flight became easier and easier. The last flight I took I genuinely enjoyed and I didn't need to take any anti-anxiety medicine. The book teaches you that the noises you hear a plane make are the noises it *should* be making. I always used to fear that the planes engines were failing upon ascent because you could hear them "loose power." I had no idea the pilots had that much control over the engines and that sometimes, for example, they just need to slow down the planes to comply with neighborhood noise ordinances! The book teaches you about weather conditions, and turbulance, and how planes and pilots have astounding abilities to handle them both. Sure, I still might sometimes (only sometimes) get a little jittery before a flight, but I feel that, like anything else, fear stems from the unknown, and when I educated myself on how planes work and how flying works, my fear went away. This book really, really made a huge difference in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Knuckles No Longer White.......2001-10-05

Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.

I'm a 34 year old balanced/sensible male who for some bizarre reason conjures up terrible nightmares before each flight, dwells on them and then allows fear to breed fear - almost to the point of not travelling.

I've tried all sorts - pills, alcohol, more alcohol, but to no avail. Until buying this book I couldn't talk, eat or begin to relax on a plane - even whilst cruising. I used to spend the entire flight waiting for the engines to fail or imagining the pilots were dealing with some sort of emergency (whilst we sat in our seats, oblivious to our imminent demise).

I also knew my fear was irrational, but that made it worse - I felt totally isolated in my own private hell and as there was nothing to do on the plane (or nothing I could do) I let my imagination run riot.

Anyway, to get to the point, something had to be done. I bought this book and it gave me exactly what I wanted - reasons why things go 'bump in the flight', reassurance on the safety/maintainance aspects (I'm no longer waiting for the plane to drop out of the sky. I mean, do people worry about a car just stopping on the motorway - and that's only got one engine!)

I no longer watch the stewardesses and assume that if they're not smiling the planes about to crash. I'm amazed I thought that way now.

Unlike other phobics (and a couple of the reviewers that critisized this book) I've always known there isn't a magic cure
and I'm the one whose got to change the way I think about flying.

I've had to go from knowing it's irrational, but feeling petrified, to knowing it's irrational and actually believing it's the safest form of transport.

I'm not there yet, but I'm slowly winning. In fact on three of my last four flights I've been able to eat and talk !!

Many thanks Debbie - your book was money well spent.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Whole Lotta Help.......2001-04-03

Although not an uninteresting exploration of many of the aspects of flying, this book does not seem likely to truly alleviate many of the fears of the uncertain flier. It is one thing to understand the mechanics of flying, but quite another to get detailed descriptions of emergency procedures when something goes wrong. Those of us who suffer or have suffered bouts of unnecessary white-knuckled flying want to know how the plane stays in the air, why it is unlikely that something will go wrong and what all those noises and sensations are that may set us off. We also want to know what is going on in the cockpit during a normal flight, since most of us realize that once we've landed, we've once again experienced a normal flight...There are much better books than this one if you want to conquer any fear of flying....END

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Reasurances.......2000-10-31

The reviews about this book were so great that I decided to get it and I was very disappointed.Debbie Seaman explains all the mechanics of the plain which is helpfull but when it comes to explaining the take-off or emergency landings she becomes very vague. She talk about take-off as one of the crucial parts of flying. She says that even if there is something wrong found with the plain during take-off it still must reach the altitude before asking for emergency landing, now, that does not give me any assuarance of safety. Also, flight attendants are not suppose to contact the pilot during take of if they see something wrong with the plain. Another part of the book that kept me hanging with the questions in the air was the emergency landing. The author just says not to worry, the plane will land even without any power in the engins.Well that does not explain to me how it will land. Just because it supposed to glide in the air? To my knowledge the plane glides but to its death. This book created more fears for me than I had before.

5 out of 5 stars It worked for me!.......2007-08-23

I absolutely hate flying. It scares me to death and for days before a trip I am almost physically ill. Bought this CD because I was willing to try anything..but was very skeptical. I thought yeah, right, a CD is really going to help me...well it did! I could not believe how calm I was at the airport and on the flight. I did the breathing which really helped. Also listened to it a few days before the return flight. Never will I fly again without using the CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great tool.......2007-08-13

I have had professional hypnotherapy done by a Psychologist for other issues. This CD is as good as being in the doctor's office with a professional. It most definitely helped and eased my fear of flying. However, this is an ongoing process, you have to set aside time to listen on a regular basis before you fly.

4 out of 5 stars Bought it for my wife.......2007-06-25

We've got a vacation coming up and we're going to fly. She is not a fan of this plan so I got this CD for her. I listened to it and it seems to do a good job of presenting a soothing message. She is listening to it nightly before going to sleep and it seems to be helping--she definitely has less anxiety about the upcoming flight.

If you don't read about the plane to Corpus Christi being delayed because a woman went crazy (marge simpson-style up and down the aisle), then it must have worked.

Don't expect a silver bullet, though. If you have a genuine fear of flying, you're going to have to commit to facing your fears. This isn't going to work on its own, but it is another tool to help.

4 out of 5 stars Overcome Fear of Flying.......2007-04-08

God motivational tape, very relaxing. My son listens to it every night. I would recommend this to those are anxious about flying!

5 out of 5 stars Saved my life.......2006-07-25

Like anyone else who would be interested in a product like this, I had a fear of flying. I'm 27 and had avoided it all my life until I found out I would have to take not one, but FOUR flights. I already suffer from anxiety so I decided to try this product based on the reviews on here and on Itunes.

IT WORKS!!! I just got back from my trip and all flights went not only well, but enjoyable. The way my mind built up my fear is pretty amazing, this helps bring it back down somehow.

I did a couple other things as well. One is I had spent sometime on youtube looking at planes taking off. Alot of people had taken footage of planes taking off from the inside and I think that helped take away some of the mystery. I also had a low dose of klonopin to take off some of the edge.

But I think this CD was the reason I made it through. One of the best decisions in my life, and no, I'm not being paid to say this!!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally relaxed.......2007-08-07

I listened to the entire CD throughout my last 5-hour flight and was delighted about the effect it had on me - I was actually relaxed. Whenever turbulence would rock the plane, I would go back to a specific section that helped me relax and go through the breathing exercise. I can only recommend this CD if you are anxious during and even before the flight (there is a great section to prepare for your flight while you are still at home).

5 out of 5 stars You just can't go wrong!.......2007-07-31

An absolute must have for those suffering from aviatophobia (fear of flying). I bought this cd about a week before my flight and I didn't start using it until the day before my flight. I took it with me and listened to it while waiting to board the plane, waiting for take-off, in-flight and landing. It was excellent! I just downloaded it into my IPod and listened to each track as I needed. The total CD is about 73 minutes but just listen to the track that you need the most and repeat it as needed. It totally soothed my nerves and calmed me down. For the first time, I didn't feel my stomach in my throat! I highly recommend it!

4 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-05-14

I really enjoyed this cd...I have taken a fear of flying course which was great but this CD was just something extra to support how safe flying really is and I felt even more relaxed and confident after listening to this CD...I def. recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guidance.......2006-07-22

I've used KRS'CD for pre-flight and on-flight jitters. This CD is one of the best relaxation aids I've found for flying discomfort. The meditations are right-on, every sentence supporting the strength we have inside, while dissipating nervousness. I love her voice and her no-nonsense style.
Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars MESMERIC & MEDITATIONAL!.......2006-04-07

What could be easier than popping the CD into the player, sitting back and relaxing. KRS has a confident soothing voice and the background music helps to keep things calm. For those of us with flying anxieties, FLY WITHOUT FEAR is a great tool to help settle the nerves.

Book Description

Originally published in 1973, the ground-breaking, uninhibited story of Isadora Wing and her desire to fly free caused a national sensation-and sold more than twelve million copies. Now, after thirty years, the iconic novel still stands as a timeless tale of self-discovery, liberation, and womanhood.

Originally published in 1973, this uninhibited story of Isadora Wing was a national sensation: fueling fantasies, igniting debates, and even introducing a notorious new phrase to the English language. In The New York Times, Henry Miller compared it to his own classic Tropic of Cancer, predicting, "This book will make literary history, that because of it women are going to find their own voice and give us great sagas of sex, life, joy, and adventure." It went on to sell more than twelve million copies. Today, Fear of Flying is a classic--a timeless tale of self-discovery, liberation, and womanhood.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fear of flying.......2007-10-11

Great book I love it. I want to thank the seller for the timely and prompt delivery of this product.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-07-16

I've read most of Erica Jong's work, poetry included, and simply adore it all. This one in particular is my first-read, and personal favorite. I've read Fear of Flying atleast three times in the last ten years, and continue to recommend it to female friends with a bent toward the literary. Critics sometimes compare Erica Jong to Anais Nin, which I find unfair; the two authors do not belong in the same genre. I find Jong's writing much more sophisticated, entertaining, imaginative, and interesting. She speaks to the heart and soul of modern, literate women, as Fear of Flying proves resoundingly. It truly is a contemporary classic.

5 out of 5 stars much better than Sex in the City in describing real relationships and the complexity of being a woman in the wake of Feminism.......2006-06-21

Erica Jong really accurately describes the complexity of relationships, desire, love, dependence and freedom. Even though this book is seen as a symbol of the women's liberation movement in the 70s (which is before I was born), it's not at all out of date.

I read Fear of Flying straight though, looking for the answers to the most difficult questions: how do I remain independent without just being lonely? how can we control love, others, and ourselves? what makes a relationship work? where does sex come into the equation? what's love got to do with it? and what do you do when a relationship is pretty darn good but not perfect?

The book doesn't have an answer key, and doesn't try to simplify what is inherently complex. Instead it is vividly real, and sticks with you long after you're done reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Just one woman's experience.......2006-06-16

"Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong has been praised for its air of liberation and liberating it may be--for some women. I find it hard to relate to a woman who today would most likely be on the highest dosage of Prozac. At the same time however, the book does explore themes such as fear, guilt, freedom and love in a way that I believe all women can relate to. As for liberating, if you need to hear a tale about some crazed writer, her fears, her angst and her mis-judgments to feel liberated, then this is a great book for you.
Erica's use of symbolism and stream of consciousness is masterful. The book is entertaining and well written but in the end it is just one woman's crazy experience. And if that crazy experience provides the inspiration that some women need to "break free" from their socialized behaviors, so be it.

4 out of 5 stars Fear of Flying: Fear of Life.......2006-04-29

This book was being gestated before I was, yet its messages still ring true. Women are still struggling with the search for the love, what it means to be a "good" woman, what it means to be a woman at all. Writers (aka: me) still struggle with the urge to write, the fear to write, the fear of failure, the search for self. Part rant, part story, part stream of consciousness, the sentiments/fears/etc. in this book hit very close to home, yet do give a hint of hope - we can find our way through the wilderness of life, and it's worth the living.

5 out of 5 stars It did work!.......2006-02-07

I rad this book 2 years ago. I found it fascinating as I always feard heights and flying (I mean, I used to sweat driving through a bridge). And I had to fly all the time for my job.
But I didn't want to post a review since the ones there were already compelling enough.
But here's my take. I am now a Private Pilot, I fly airplanes in the cockpit and I sleep when I am in the passenger seat.
It was hard, real hard. And I started the training few weeks after I finished the book.
It is a true story, as much as the book's one is fictional.
Thank you Captain Chance.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!.......2004-06-26

Wings of Discovery, by Captain Stacey Chance is a perfect book for anyone who has any fears about flying. This book gives you reassuring facts in the form of a entertaining story. Compared to the books about flying that just give you the facts and nothing else, Wings of Discovery adds human emotion to the facts. This book is perfect for people who want to understand how airplanes can fly, airplanes and weather conditions, and so much more. Captain Chance has given people who are afraid to fly, and also people who just want to know more about aviation, a remarkable gift! It comes highly recommended from me!

5 out of 5 stars What an inspiring gift!.......2002-12-21

I had received the book "Wings of Discovery" as a gift from my Mother. Only my family and close friends knew about my intense fear of flying phobia. I have tried many things to overcome my fear, but nothing seemed to do the trick. I started to read "Wings of Discovery" with a half opened mind. I set it in my head that this book would not help me, but I would at least try. I had no idea just how big of an impact this book would have on my life. Once I started to read it however, I simply could not put it down. This 130 page paperback book by Captain Stacey L. Chance fascinated me to no end. It was a non stop journey of how Mark Thomas confronts and conquers his fear of flying. It is a fictional story, however there are many questions that fearful fliers have, that are answered factually. Captain Stacey L. Chance presents us with a quite entertaining and at times humorous story that truly helps people who have this dreadful fear. When I completed the book, I stared off in the distance and actually pictured myself flying my own plane. Now that is something that I would have NEVER EVER imagined myself doing before. I will definitely recommend this book to anyone who has the same fear as me. I will read this book from time to time, but I will also read it again before I board my next flight, and take it with me on the plane. Not only was this book a gift from my Mother, but it was a gift from Captain Stacey. Thank you for giving me a gift that will last a lifetime.

5 out of 5 stars An exhilarating flight.......2002-11-28

Most of us have heard the saying, "There's nothing to fear, but fear itself." This rhetoric sounds good, but to actually put it to use is a completely different story. Fear can stop someone from experimenting with new activities, eating exotic foods, and traveling to foreign lands. But once you overcome the fear, you will most likely discover joy. This joy comes from the accomplishment of breaking the imaginary chains of thought which held you hostage.

Wings of Discovery helps to clip the chains of fear. The premise of the book is about overcoming the fear of flying. Although his father was a pilot, Mark succumbs to a horrendous phobia about flying. Then one day, he spots two ultralight planes having "fun" in the air. While the planes land, Mark tracks them in his car and introduces himself to the pilots. This marks the beginning of his adventure - pursing his passion, following his dream and conquering his fear.

Capt. Stacy L. Chance introduces the reader to a wealth of information about how the Federal Aviation Administration ensures the safety of aircraft. He also entertains by intermingling his vivid descriptions of the landscapes and scenery when his characters take flight. I felt as if I soared through the air, and watched as the coyote ran to keep up with the plane. For anyone really interested in learning to fly, I learned that airplane kits are available. I definitely recommend Wings of Discovery for anyone who wants to learn more about aviation, and to release any fears that hinder them from soaring to new dimensions.

2 out of 5 stars Not so funny.......2007-09-10

While the fear of flying may be an unrational fear, it is a VALID fear. The authors comedic stories about freak airplane accidents made me feel more nervous about flying! If it can happen to them.... it can happen to me!! I have had success in the past with a fear of flying book, but it was so long ago I don't recall the title. Since the birth of my daughter I found the fear coming back. Unfortunatly this was not the book to help me feel secure 30,000 feet up.

I am told, time and again how helpful this book is for my patients and I literally ask every patient I work with, that is struggling with a flying phobia, to get this book immediately! Excellent resource!

5 out of 5 stars The very BEST book about the fear of flying!.......2006-03-23

I have been a fearful flyer for 15+ years. I have read numerous books about this subject. Ms. Ridley's approach at addressing this irrational fear is one of a kind. Her comical approach mixed with the facts made for a clear understanding as to how safe flying really is. In fact after reading this book and boarding that plane it was the first time in my life where I actually was able to stop my obsessive negative thoughts and think about the facts. I have been avoiding planes for years and when I had to fly for my job, I purchased this book. As I was reading this I found myself laughing out loud over and over again. This book is an absolute scream! This woman is hilarious! Ms. Ridley knows what it means to be TERRIFIED to fly! All of her obsessive thoughts were identical to mine. She doesn't surgarcoat the facts but she helps you to look at the facts and realize that flying really isn't as dangerous as you think it is! The data is a bit outdated and the terrorist infomration isn't current because it was written prior to the Sept. 11th attacks. However, there are enough facts which I feel were very useful. I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars This book actually helped me!.......2005-08-14

This book is funny and educational at the same time. I laugh out loud when I read it because Ms. Ridley knows the mind of someone who fears flying very well. She reasons with us with her humor and what she teaches is quite logical. I have a library of self-help books and I think that this is one of the few that I've read from beginning to end AND one that has helped me. I recommend it to others in the same predicament all the time. The book actually helped me to understand how a plane flies, what all the strange noises are and I feel less stressed when I read it because I laugh so much! I've read the book while flying and before flying. Although the book was published a number of years ago all the advice is applicable to us today. If you can't find a new edition look for it on the internet under out-of-print books and you should be able to get a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and helpful.......2000-02-19

This book is extremely funny (esp. her section of what she thinks is wrong with the plane when she flies vs. what is actually happening). It's easy to really relate to the author because of her friendly, funny, human voice, so when she researches flying and explains why it's NOT something to fear, you really believe her.

Actually a fun read even if you don't mind flying...

Book Description

Written in her wonderfully honest, edgy, passionate and often hilarious voice, Tiffanie DeBartolo tells the story of Eliza Caelum, a young music journalist, and Paul Hudson, a talented songwriter and lead singer of the band Bananafish. Eliza's reverence for rock is equaled only by Paul's, and the two fall wildly in love.

When Bananafish is signed by a big corporate label, and Paul is on his way to becoming a major rock star, Eliza must make a heartbreaking decision that leads to Paul's sudden disappearance and a surprise knock-your-socks-off ending.

5 out of 5 stars for girls who love rock music and the guys that play it..........2007-06-08

I loved her novel 'God Shaped Hole" and this one is engrossing just the same but different!

1 out of 5 stars what a disappointment.......2007-05-25

As someone who loved Debartolo's book 'God-Shaped Hole', I am warning you...this book is not of the same caliber whatsoever. It's not horrible, but if you go in with high expectations I guarantee you'll be sorely disappointed. The supposed heroine, Eliza Caelum, is particularly tiresome. Get ready for 400+ pages with endless descriptions of how she lowers her chin and blinks her pretty eyes heavenward...

5 out of 5 stars absolutely amazing........2007-01-29

WHAT a story. I think it actually stole my soul. When the characters were happy and in love, so was i. when they were grief stricken, i became physically ill. (perhaps my pancreas?) the most beautiful story i've read in such a long time. worth every cent.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2006-10-05

The professional review, in my personal opinion, is completely off.

This book was filled with so much in a short time, but that's reality. I laughed aloud in the middle of a meeting while reading this book. And yes, I was reading it during a meeting. I couldn't put it down! I had to leave my house and sit outside to bawl my eyes out while reading, because my heart was being bent and broken.

DeBartalo's voice in this novel is exquisite. Her characters are so elegantly, mesmorizingly expressed. I fell in love with Paul Hudson. I was Eliza. Every moment of this book was like a beautifully made movie running through my mind.

Five stars, hands down. I finished this book in less than 6 hours. It was amazing.

5 out of 5 stars If you love guitars and wit..........2006-07-21

You will live by this book. Love, music, personality - this story's got it all. Tiffanie's voice is deep and genuine which made me feel like a part of the characters. I can read it over and over again.
