As though blowing oxygen upon the dying embers of a fire, pastor Jim Cymbala revived a broken-down church in a rough-shod inner-city neighborhood through Christian faith. Twenty-five years ago, the Brooklyn Tabernacle could barely draw 26 people to a Sunday service. Nowadays the congregation is 6,000 strong--filled with converted prostitutes, pimps, drug addicts, and homeless people, as well as yuppies and wholesome families. Although he's quick to give God credit for this miraculous success story, Cymbala admits that there may be a few human decisions that led to this Christian triumph. Most significantly, he made sure his church community embraced everyone, from all walks of life--no matter how distasteful or foreign. "Christians often hesitate to reach out to those who are different," according to Cymbala. "They want God to clean the fish before they catch them. If someone's gold ring is attached to an unusual body part, if the person doesn't smell the best or the skin color is not the same, Christians tend to hesitate." Thus, Cymbala encouraged his congregation to adopt the very same tolerant and accepting attitude as their God does. The results? Let's just say a church thrives in Brooklyn. Accomplished cowriter Dean Merrill helps this tender true story stay satisfying and highly readable. --Gail Hudson

An Appeal to the Power of Prayer.......2007-08-15
The Brooklyn Tabernacle's commitment to prayer is well-represented in the work. Rev. Cymbala is truly a humble man of God who seeks not to elevate himself but the Mighty God he and his Church serves. In addition to the rich Scripture that is cited in this work, there are numerous testimonies to the power of prayer, and historical accounts of church leaders who made prayer a number one priority as well. I also appreciated the simple plea of prayer that Rev. Cymbala ascribes to. Today, there are a number of church leaders who promote special techniques for prayer such as position, geographic location, and so on. How refreshing it was to hear a pastor appeal to calling on the name of the Lord that rested on the grace of God and His mercy rather than an individual's unique performance.
Fresh Wind and Fresh Fire is a book, which will leave one in awe to the power of God that is released when people unite and call upon the Name of the Lord.
Excellent Prayer Motivator!.......2007-07-25
I lead a weekly prayer group at my church and was becoming discouraged due to poor participation from the congregation. After 2 1/2 years I was getting ready to throw in the towl, but reading Pastor Cymbala's book has breathed new life into me! This book was a major encouragement to me, both in my personal prayer life as well as my corporate rone. While the book is written very simply and does not go too deep into theology, it presents some wonderful insights into the power of prayer and how God has hard-wired this world to work through the prayers of His children. Would highly recommend this book for all believers, especially those in leadership roles.
A Fresh Approach.......2007-04-27
Jim Cymbala brings us back to the basics of the early church. He demonstrates what happens when a church really starts to pray. The power talked about in the early church is still there.
Jim shows how we just have to let go of our formulas and programs, and we have to admit that our approach is not really calling down God's power. Real brokenness is essential for God's power to really flow, brokenness and a dedication to praying. This is what leads to spiritual breakthrough.
This is definitely a story of most of today's churches, and Jim shows us a way to focus on God's power. Do you believe that "great sermon" may stand in the way of god's moving?
The book is very readable.
Fresh Wind Fresh Fire CD.......2007-03-23
This CD Book was practically new (may have been new). The price was right and it was shipped in a timely manner. The people who sold this CD Book to me are top shelf in my book. Thank you.
YES! BUY IT!.......2007-02-15
Enough reviews that tell how good this book is, they are true! Just wanted to add to theirs in case someone wants to see what books I reccomend!

A book of prayers based on Ignatian spiritualityó-the most influential spiritual tradition of modern times. The prayers compiled in this unique book are gleaned from the rich tradition of Jesuit reflection on the human hunger for God.

Humility and kindness abound!.......2007-09-16
I was looking for this book as I had given my copy away. Luckily, Amazon had it! It is a place that I can 'travel' that offers kindness and hope. Hearts on Fire fulfills me with the strength to stay fully present to others.
Brilliant distillation of Ignatian Spirituality.......2007-06-30
It is seldom that I actually like a book of prayers, rarer still that I enthuse, and only once or twice ever would I actually rave about such a work to my friends. I don't normally think prayer books help; they are after all someone else's prayer and I see prayer as an intensely personal thing that cannot be attained 'second hand'.
Thats probably why, even before joining the Jesuits, I came to appreciate Ignatian Spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola. For the Exercises [often called SpEx in shorthand by Ignatian retreat directors) are not prayers you say specifically but guidelines on how to do the prayer yourself. Even here, in Harter's book, this is clearly the purpose...
In effect, Harter brings us meditations on the four Weeks of the SpEx that clearly serve to aid us in our prayer. We read these meditations - from Ignatius, Xavier, Rahner, Teilhard,Hopkins et al - not for themselves [though the glorious quality of their language makes it aesthetically worthwhile even without praying]but for how they might ignite in our hearts (to use the title's metaphor) our own spiritual encounter with God.
Of course it is not the same as making the full Spiritual Exercises (30 days) or the SpEx in Daily Life (8 months to a year, with 1hour of prayer per day) or even doing an 8-day Ignatian retreat. Though it is certainly a book one could take on such retreats (as, in fact, I did recently). The beauty of this little book is that it can be used by pretty much anyone, anywhere. One hopes, as I am sure Fr Harter hopes, that it will also draw more people to encounter God through the Spiritual Exercises.
Way to pray!!!.......2007-05-13
If you have an interest or backgorund in the spirtuality of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, you will find this book to be a rich treasure. From Ignatius himself, to Jesuits still serving today, you will discover wise and challenging prayers and poems, each pertaining to specific movements of the Spiritual Exercises. Additonally, appropriate scriptures are suggested for praying the Exercises. If you know nothing about Ignatius or the Jesuits, you will also find this a rich source of meaningful prayer and reflection. I regularly give these booklets as gifts to people seeking good resources for prayer. A special book in deed!
It's like reading poetry........2007-05-09
It opens your heart and your mind. It is at once intriging and delightful. Not a book to be read from cover to cover. But one to pick up and read and contemplate.
Hearts on Fire: Praying With Jesuits.......2007-01-31
This was just as I had hoped it would be. I am very pleased with it.

Book Description
A fabulous lost Amazon city once inhabited by women warriors and containing a rare red diamond: it sounded like myth, but archeologist Jillian Sherwood believed it was real, and she was willing to put up with anything to find it -- even Ben Lewis. Ruffian, knock-about, and number one river guide in Brazil, Ben was all man -- over six feet of rock-hard muscles that rippled under his khakis, with lazy blue eyes that taunted her from his tanned face. Jillian watched him come to a fast boil when she refused to reveal their exact destination upriver in the uncharted rain forests -- and resolved to stand her ground. Neither of them could foresee what the days ahead promised: an odyssey into the fiery heart of passion and betrayal, and a danger that would force them to cast their fates together, immersed in the eternal, unsolved mysteries of love....

Exciting short read.......2007-07-08
This is an excellent short read. I will read more of her books! This isn't just your run of the mill romance novel. It has an exciting trip up the Amazon to find a lost city, where the Amazons supposedly lived. There is plenty of romance included, though. Linda Howard has a little different twist to romance that was refreshing. I would recommend it to anyone who loves romance and mystery!
What a surprise!.......2005-10-04
This book was a surprise for me,I have almost every book that Linda Howard has written, but I always had second thoughts about buying this one, and when finally I bought it I really liked it.The story was great and the main characters had strong personalities just how I like them.I liked Jillian's character the best. She was smart, tough and she didn't trust eassily.Ben was really a law unto himself, but underneath it all a true gentleman that would give his life to save the woman he loves. It shows that the author loves the setting of the story and even though I haven't been to the amazon I could imagine being there.I loved this book it's a great read, I highly recommend it.
Romancing the Stone meets Indiana Jones.......2005-05-13
In an effort to reestablish her deceased father's reputation, archeologist Jillian Sherwood and her half-brother get financial backing from a shady character to search for a lost civilization buried deep in the Amazon and falls for her American ex-pat river guide, Ben Lewis.
Of course, it is hate at first sight for both of them. Overly macho Ben does not want to take a woman into unchartered territory, but on the other hand, he does not trust the locals to not harm her either, so he reluctantly agrees, and makes several attempts at wooing her. Jillian is no shrinking violet, and she can more than hold her own on the expedition, especially since she is the only one who can read the map.
Jillian and Ben has so much chemistry oozing off the pages, and their romance really sizzles. This is one of Linda Howard's better pairings, as the hero and the heroine can hold their own (and can banter better than most duos).
It is a great adventure ride with lots of twists and turns and plenty of romance.
Exciting and could not put down but..........2005-04-21
My second LH novel and it was better than the first. I like her reccurring themes, mainly, the male hero is terribly frustrated and attracted to the heroine. What woman doesn't want to drive a man bonkers??? And this story is full of it, heightened by the steamy Amazon, the tagalong scary or annoying side characters and the mystery of the jewel they are all in search of.
I gave it 4 stars because basically, these two are attracted by sexual frustration and for me, that doesn't make a story unforgettable. That's just base, animal attraction without much in the way of deep abiding love -- the kind that makes your soul soar, your heart sing and stuff like that.
But it was a heck of a fun adventure and I kept wondering if Ms. Howard had actually BEEN on the Amazon. Now, Im ready to go see it for myself!
SPICEEEEEAY!.......2004-09-01
What I like about Linda Howard's books are that they just grab you in and never let you go. Her books are so real and in touch. The plot: A treasure hunt with everyone on the expedition having their own ulterior motives. This is one of my favorite books of Linda Howard. Why? Who wouldn't pay good money to see an arrogant, conceited, alpha male knocked down a peg or two. And Jillian is the perfect heroine to do that. Very intelligent and witty. But I couldn't hate Ben Lewis. He is the ultimate "black sheep bad for you guy" and it is so endearing that he finally finds his soul mate and loves her with all of his being. There is something so sexy about a guy who exudes masculinity but also has a soft spot. I love the scenes where he shows how protective and caring he is to Jillian. Way to go Jillian for not letting him get it too easy.
As far as Dutra being added to the expedition, eh... you give a little to get a little. I thought the idea was that Ben wasn't supposed to know what they were up to. One person had the map and the other funded the expedition. I would imagine the person who funded the expedition wouldn't go without his trusted thug. But without Dutra being there, there wouldn't be half as many exciting near death scenes.

very good read.......2002-12-14
this book was the first of the three on the subject of healer of cyprus and his teachings that i read and i was very much impressed by it. now i am looking forward to read the first two books and if they are any thing close to this one then they must be outstanding read as well.
Splendid!!!.......2002-10-26
This is the book which I recommend for all seeker of truth.
Lies.......1999-07-04
This is the book where the Author lost his integrity. If you have an interest in one of the greatest healers and mystics of our time, read The Magus of Strovolos : The Extraordinary World of a Spiritual Healer, which was the first and only book approved by Daskalos ( the magus of Strovolos ). Although Daskalos didn't approve of the second book, Homage to the Sun : The Wisdom of the Magus of Strovolos...I still recommend it. Most of it is honest.
You can see the rational in exploring the mystical.......1998-07-07
If you are a left-brained trained cynic as I am (I am an attorney by trade) a book on the non-material universe that "adds up" on the rational side is a joy and a delight. This is such a book. Markides explains things that I had not understood, and showed me possibilties I had not entertained. Additionally, because the narrator of the tales told to us is, as was Casteneda in the Don Juan books, outside the discipline he is reporting, we see though his initially skeptical eyes, and and hear thouigh his "can this be true?" ears. Thus are we led to feel secure that events have unfolded as they are reported, they can be believed, and may well be part of a new reality we can, ourselves, adopt. It gave me much to "chew on", expanded my thinking, and shines like a small jewel on my recollection. I will, indeed, read more of Markides.
Half Truths.......1998-07-04
The first part of this book is a good treatment of the subject mater and is an interesting read. However, in the last part of the book the author succumbs to manipulating the actual facts for selfish motives. This leaves the reader with a false impression of the truth concerning Daskalos, the teachings and the so-called Erevna.

Firefighters from the Heart: True Stories and Lessons Learned.......2006-12-28
Excellent Read!!!!! All of the stories are actual accounts that have occurred in the field! I recommend this book to anyone who is working in the Fire Service or others looking to get a taste of crawling down the hall.
Touching Stories.......2006-11-06
This book does a very good job, and I give thanks to the author and all his scources for the excellent stories. Every story in this book serves to illistrate a point, a purpose. It tells the stories of fire fighters from all over, both big and small, career and volunteer. Some of the stories are sad, some of them happy but All of them serve the purpose just as the title says "Lessons Learned." I would strongly recommend this book to Anybody and Everybody that is interest in, already serving in, or has served in the Fire Service in some way. Furthermore this book is good not only for those previously mentioned but for Everybody else. You won't be disapointed if you purchase this book..I wasn't thus why I've given it 5 stars.
Walking the Walk.......2006-08-12
This book is a compelling glimpse into the experiences that firefighters encounter, and more importantly learn from, on a daily basis. Whether your in the fire service or just interested in learning more about it, this book is a guided tour by one of Chicago's most dedicated and admired veterans. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down!!!
Firefighters from the Heart.......2006-04-29
This is an excellent book especially if you are in the fire service. Every story comes out with a special meaning and best of all, very good lessons for survival and safety. The author was the assistant chief of the fire academy while I was a recruit(candidate)and he did an excellent job teaching. I'm still learning from him and will never forget every thing he taught me in the academy. Thanks Steve for being an important role model and teacher.

Fire In My Heart, Ice In My Veins A Journal for Teenagers by Enid Traisman. Teens can write letters, copy down meaningful lyrics, write songs and poems, tell the person who died what they want them to know, finish business and use their creativity to work through the grieving process.
Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful!.......2007-07-05
This workbook has proven very useful for teenagers going through the grieving process. My clients have been able to process a great deal with the help of this item. I would highly recommend it.
A Wonderful Resource.......2006-11-01
I am a teacher of teenagers and have given this book to at least five students who have suffered a loss. They ALL have reported that it was tremendously helpful and, when they shared it with their families, a bonding experience.
Creative approach to dealing with grief.......2003-03-06
I work in an Alternative HS and have found that my students who most would think the book looks "corney" have requested copies of the book after looking through it. I like the fact that it addresses issues of anger that the adolescent may have (or may not even realize they have) towards the deceased. I work with high-risk youth and the family dynamics are always so complex. I also like the fact that it addresses changes that the adolescent will have to make and doesn't "sugar coat" things. But, it pays respect to the deceased in a tasteful way, and it is way for the adolescent to write memories/stories he/she might forget.
My only complaint is that the book is pink. My guys who have been the ones who really have gotten a lot of use from this book (especially dealing with the death of a parent) are turned off at first from even looking at it.
A great book.......2001-11-04
This is a wonderful Journal for kids. On my first read through I felt it was geared a little more toward 9 to 13 year olds, rather than older teens. However, the content is excellent and the ideas and exercises will really help grieving teens work through the difficult grief process.
An excellent choice for ANYONE suffering a loss........1998-11-26
I ordered this journal for my two teen-aged daughters, both of whom were suffering greatly with the loss of my mother, their grandmother. The book is a wonderful aid in helping them express all the things they were afraid to vocalize. It allows them to write down their thoughts and feelings on such subjects as what they were doing when they found out the person had died, unresolved issues with the person who died and how they would like them to be resolved now, where they believe their loved one is now, and how the future will be without the person they love. It allows the teen to see that they are not alone in their grief, that others have the same thoughts as they do. I highly reccommend this book to ANYONE who is experiencing loss in their life. It leads you gently through the entire grieving process-I can't say enough about how it helped us through a very difficult time in our lives.
Book Description
A fifteen-year-old boy is walking through a swirling fog on his way to school when a voice calls out, "Come here. We need to talk." Out of the mist emerges an old man with a white beard. He is a fantastic figure, as wizardly as Merlin, as wise as Socrates, as peaceful as Buddha. Whoever he is, the old man has appeared on that very day to change the boy's life.
"You are old enough to learn about things," he says mysteriously. "And who is going to teach you but me?"
The old man gives the boy four days of "soul training," a time of riddles, tricks, parables, and fantastic twists that bring out surprising answers to each of four burning questions about spirituality:
Do I have a soul?
How do wishes come true?
What is the supreme force in the universe?
How can I change the world?
The boy was Deepak Chopra, who grew up to become an acclaimed writer and teacher about the same invisible things that the old man had taught him. Fire in the Heart is Dr. Chopra's first book for young adults. Its aim is to pass on this soul training to young readers.
"The old man with the white beard showed me the spiritual side of life," writes the author, "where real passion and excitement come from. So before you begin, take a deep breath. This story could turn out to be yours."
"[Spirit is] everywhere, making sure that everything is connected. The light from a star billions of light years away is the same light that makes plants grow here on earth. The plants give food; the food has allowed you to develop in your mother's womb; and today you look at that star with the eyes that the stars gave you. There's the cosmic connection."

A Real Fire in the Heart.......2004-11-26
This is an amazing book, to be read by people of all age groups.
There are a very few books which give a spiritual insight in such simple terms.
This is definetely one among the best of such books. It is as interesting as
a good fiction, with a very simple and effective message in each chapter.
The author makes each of the message reach straight into the heart of the
reader by the style he has used for writing.

Book Description
In the classic bestseller, Introduction to Tantra, Lama Yeshe offered a profound glimpse into the authentic and sophisticated practices of Tibetan Buddhist Tantra. The Bliss of Inner Fire may be considered a perfect follow-up to that book. Lama Yeshe follows Tsongkhapa's (1357-1419 a.d.) text, Having the Three Convictions, and introduces the renowned Six Yogas of Naropa, focusing mainly on the first of these six, the practice of "inner fire" (tummo). Mastery of inner fire quickly brings the mind to its most refined and penetrating state — the experience of clear light, an extra-ordinarily powerful state of mind that is unequaled in its ability to directly realize ultimate reality. Lama Yeshe felt that twentieth-century Westerners could easily grasp the often misunderstood ideas of this esoteric tradition: His aim was for his students to actually taste the experience of inner fire rather than merely gain an intellectual understanding. Lama's own realization of the transformative power of these practices comes through, inspiring his students to discover for themselves their own capacity for inexhaustible bliss.

Shortcut to Bliss.......2007-09-12
This book is thought-provoking; yet, it's very aim is to move beyond thought.
I'm trying the techniques gently with mixed success. It appears they work best for me after yoga when the body and mind are naturally more in tune.
It is not well-written - but it is very well intended. The translation is not perfect - but the book is quite understandable in terms of the suggested practices.
If you prefer chakra energy exercises, this might provide useful insight for you. Don't expect miracles, it takes practice!
The fruits of the practice arrive when you least expect them. I think it opens you up to awareness of bliss and you more readily accept it into your life. Like the Christian notion of grace, you can't create it - you can only prepare to accept it! May bliss find you!
Tummo is a rare jewel.......2007-08-19
I have completed two retreats practicing Tummo. Lama Yeshe's book is excellent and of first rate quality. What he describes is true and can be experienced by those who wish to work. I do not practice with Lama Yeshe's tradition, but for those who want to understand the depths of Tummo...I totally recommend it. For those who do not wish to do the work of the practice, I'd suggest they not read it. It is a topic that cannot be accomplished by intellect alone. But for those of you who will do the work, then when the Fire blazes and the Kundalini flows...you will know and I know that this man has correctly described the events that unfold.
great information clearly written.......2007-05-13
This is a fine tantric manual with detailed information on the tummo
practice. I refer to it constantly.
a book that cannot stand on its own.......2006-03-16
I do not like it when the book you are reading tells you "I will not go into this because I have explained it elsewhere." It seems impossible to get a good understanding of tummo (the inner fire) without reading Lama Yeshe's other books. The reader is redirected to other places to learn about the most essential information like specific mantras to complete the practices mentioned. We have lots of philosophical "good stuff" in this book, but when it comes to practice, oops! you need a flesh and blood guru, or better, another book by the same publications.
I'm Not A Big Fan of Tibetan Buddhism ..........2005-02-12
it has too many "pre-canned" answers, I dislike it's overarching emphasis on ceremonial ritual and if I have to read another explanation on the inseparability of bliss and "emptiness" I'm going to gag. But for the most part this book was very candid and straight forward. The discussions on vase breathing and tummo were remarkably down to earth and frank. This was a fascinating book for anyone interested in the substratum of esoteric body lore from which hatha yoga and less well known traditions arose.

Book Description
Eight women from eight very different backgrounds. Yet the struggles they each faced rang with eerie similarity. These courageous women from across the globe-Pakistan, India, Romania, Former Soviet Union, China, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia-shared similar experiences of hardship, subjugation, and persecution, all because of their faith in Christ. Yet all of these women have emerged from adversity as leaders and heroines.
The eight modern-day pilgrims featured in Hearts of Fire are the hidden jewels in the church universal. They are worthy role models of faith and passion, and women of every age will gain new strength and hope for their own times of crisis and trial as they read these inspiring stories. Each story concludes with thoughtful self-reflection questions for the reader.

Persecuted women of faith.......2007-03-28
Eight women in the underground Church have shared their stories of what their faith in God has cost them and their loved ones. They are each from different countries, and their individual ways of drawing persecution, and their sufferings are distinct. They are alike in that they each refused to deny the Lord Who saved them.
I don't agree with all the women in the book. One of the chapters was on Sabina Wurmbrand. I appreciate her suffering and stedfastness in the Lord, but some of the comments, as well as some things I've read on her husband, Richard Wurmbrand who has suffered so much for Christ's sake, seem to be contrary to Scripture. Maybe I am mistaken, or maybe they are less than orthodox, but I can still glorify God in their testimony for Him.
Ling was another woman who was tortured for Christ. She was a leader and preacher in the underground church in China. I believe that the Bible teaches against women preaching in mixed company, but I admire her conviction. I also realize that sometimes men are not available or willing to do things, and women are. Ling was willing, and she suffered much for Christ's sake.
The other six women had one thing in common with each other and the previously listed two: they were all Christians. One woman suffered incredible physical and emotional pain after refusing to convert to Islam. One father tried to kill his daughter who became a believer in Christ from Islam after searching for the truth. Another woman lost her husband and two sons to those who resented the message of Christ.
One thing I really appreciated about this book is that these are women of today. They are not women to inspire me from history, although they will be that for others. They are women who are living now, existing on this planet in my lifetime. These are the sufferings of today. I have not been chosen to suffer as they have, but whether my time comes or not, these women inspire me to cling to Christ, and remain faithful to Him whatever the cost. Due to the explanations of the extreme costliness of their faith, I would only recommend this book to adults.
Touching........2004-08-21
Touching and heart-tugging. Certainly an emotional pull. But I must say, I greatly prefer another book of the genre, "Daughters of Hope: Stories of Witness and Courage." It not only covers women from far more countries, but it goes beyond the emotional pull. It gives clear prayer and activity responses, country by country, giving guidance as to what we can do. I don't want to know unless I also know how to respond.
