You can get anything you want in postwar Hot Springs, Arkansas--girls, gambling, drugs, or booze--courtesy of gangster Owney Madden, a picaresque character who affects jodhpurs, ascots, and an English accent to disguise his origins in New York's Hell's Kitchen. A county prosecutor, ambitious for higher office, sees Madden's destruction as the key to his political future, and he thinks Medal of Honor winner Earl Swagger is the right man to break Madden's stranglehold on the corrupt city.

A decent man haunted by his warrior past as well as the memory of his suffering at the hands of an abusive father, Earl yearns for the peace and quiet of domesticity with his wife Junie and the child she carries. But his need for "the hot pounding of the gun, the furious intensity of it all," is even more compelling. Earl's fearlessness in the face of danger is his defense against guilt over having survived both the war and his father's cruelty. Tasked with training a commando cadre to destroy Madden's criminal enterprise, Earl finds a way to channel his violent nature in the service of justice, despite his suspicions about his boss's political agenda, which threatens to compromise his assignment and destroy his team.

A prequel to Stephen Hunter's three well-reviewed suspense thrillers starring Earl's son, former marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger (Point of Impact, Black Light, Dirty White Boys), Hot Springs is bloody, hard-boiled fiction at its best. Hunter's precise descriptions of combat, hardware, and commando training are rendered in spare, uncluttered prose, and the melodrama around a key subplot--Earl's tangled, love-hate relationship with his murdered father--enhances rather than detracts from the novel's superb pacing and powerful narrative. Another subplot, involving Madden's rivalry with Bugsy Siegel, whose plan to create a rival sin city in Las Vegas threatens his own prominence, is less successful, but that's a minor quibble. While it's the only part of Hot Springs that doesn't fully engage the reader, it highlights Hunter's verisimilitude in depicting the heady post-World War II era. This is a highly readable book that should send grateful fans to Hunter's backlist as soon as they've turned the last page. --Jane Adams

Book Description

The undisputed master of the tough thriller, New York Times bestselling author Stephen Hunter delivers a masterpiece of crime fiction set in 1940s Arkansas, where law and corruption ricochet like slugs from a .45 automatic.

HOT SPRINGS

Earl Swagger is tough as hell. But even tough guys have their secrets. Plagued by the memory of his abusive father, apprehensive about his own impending parenthood, Earl is a decorated ex-Marine of absolute integrity -- and overwhelming melancholy. Now he's about to face his biggest, bloodiest challenge yet.

It is the summer of 1946, organized crime's garish golden age, when American justice seems to have gone to seed for good. Nowhere is this more true than in Hot Springs, Arkansas, the reigning capital of corruption. When the district attorney vows to bring down the mob, Earl is recruited to run the show. As casino raids erupt into nerve-shattering combat amid screaming prostitutes and fleeing johns, the body count mounts -- along with the suspense.

5 out of 5 stars Gritty and Explosive.......2007-09-28

Don't let this book pass you by. If you are into the fast paced yet creative and classic styles of writing, this book is for you. This is possibly the best of the Swagger series and Mr. Hunter's writing in general. Its a excellent example of the Gritty life of a hard times, fist pounding, gun toting, ex-marine who knows the business end of a gun. Throw in a medal of honor and a bit of Judo, and you have a man's man, ready to clean house on the bad Guys. However he is not without his demons, and Hunter skillfully works in this subplot with some surprises at the end. I would compare this book to "Shibumi" by Travanian. Which is a book you keep on the shelf for another read. Its a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Earl Swaggert Mystery Early Years Solved........2007-08-23

Steven Hunter undresses Earl Swaggert for us, and shows his soft side, his weak side, and now we know why he is so hard, dependable and honest. Excitement begins with page one, and takes the reader through the tameing of an out of control, sin city, where gambling, prostitution, and drugs are king. The courage of good, well intended men put their lives on the line to make Arkansas a better place to live. Conflick abounds. A good read.

3 out of 5 stars Too good to be true.......2006-09-15

No one shoots straighter, hits harder, thinks clearer, talks plainer or acts manlier than Earl Swagger. By page 200, I wanted him dead. I've been a Hunter fan since I started reading his movie reviews in the Washington Post. And I think Dirty White Boys is a classic; I still have fond memories of reading it in a coin-laundry on the upper peninsula of Michigan on a very cold night. But Hot Springs got on my nerves. Writers are supposed to sympathize with their characters. Hunter goes way too far. His portrayal of Marine war hero turned lawman Earl Swagger plunges into hero worship. Earl can't just be the best shot among the lawmen assembled to bust up an Arkansas gambling syndicate; he has to be the best boxer too. No doubt, he's also a stallion in the sack. Sometimes Hunter veers disturbingly close to what seems like self-loathing for an East Coast movie critic and writer: Almost every educated, non-Southern character is a coward or a schemer, simply not worthy to stand in the presence of manly southern man Swagger. Sensing a potential chink in the armor, Hunter implausibly grants Swagger - a rural Arkansas lawman in 1946 - the enlightened racial outlook of a Freedom Rider. I started to think that Hunter and Swagger deserve the kind of treatment Mark Twain dished out to James Fenimore Cooper and Natty Bumppo. But heck, Hunter sure can tell a story. He gradually won me over again with entertaining villains and sharp storytelling. Is anyone better at keeping a story moving by cutting between different points of view? Plus, he works hard here to get the period detail (Sin City, Arkansas 1946) just right. There are even flashes of humor (something I never noticed before in a Hunter thriller), including a bit involving a clown. Bonus: a nice twist at the end for those who've read another Swagger tale, Black Light.

4 out of 5 stars It's Swagger time again!.......2006-08-02

Stephen Hunter is at his best when he writes about Swagger. So why change a winning "team"?
This time it's Earl Swagger and the story is based in 1946. Funny as it seems this time it's Earl who (also) has to deal with his father's fate - but this is not the main subject of the book.
Luckily Hunter did not copy the plot of his earlier books but created a completely different kind of mood and storyline. "Hot Springs" is not as complex as "Point of Impact" or "Time to Hunt" but straightforward, fast paced action with surprising twists and angles. This book sure is well worth reading.

Anybody who is not acquainted to Stephen Hunter books so far should read this one (and "Pale Horse Coming") before he starts reading the other Swagger books since this book is a prequel to the life of Bob Lee Swagger and explains why he became the man he is.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all.......2006-02-18

Haven't read Stephen Hunter before so I didn't start this book with any pre-conceived ideas but I found the novel pretty good.

Earl Swagger is a mans man. War hero, tough guy. Full of inner demons and maybe a death wish.

Set in 1946, Swagger is the leader of a group of covert law enforcement officers intent on cleaning up the town of Hot Springs from casinos.

The novel deals with the characters, the time and the place very well.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF A KIND BOOK-NICE ATTENTION TO DETAIL.......2007-02-23

This is probably the best hot spring book in existence for the southwestern U.S.. It is great, it has everything you need. Beyond the locations themselves, the book lists temperature of the pools, driving direcetions, driving conditions, exact GPS coordinates, accessability and a great description of the springs along with some black and white pictures. It has all of the major hot springs in it (I am sure there are still some minor ones on private property). I have been to a couple of the sites in the book and it was easy to find them. I would highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, and descriptions of springs.......2007-01-27

I got into hiking and discovered hotsprings a few years ago. This book is a great guide and map to many great springs all over the South west and more.
Def. reccomend it for the adventurer

4 out of 5 stars Don't buy for Texas.......2005-08-17

I gave this four stars because most of the book is awesome and we've good experiences with the other additions. My wife and I love to travel to natural hot springs and we bought this after visiting most of the springs in the Northwest US.
We bought this edition just to get some idea of the springs in Texas. There is only one listed though which is pretty inaccurate. Nothing in the Austin area is included but the stuff in Hawaii was right on!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide!.......2004-04-16

This is a great guide and the updated version is wonderful. GPS coordinates are a definite bonus, particularly for some of the more elusive springs. There is so much more information in this latest guide. We've been using an earlier edition for over 10 years, and enjoy each and every soak. Looking forward to exploring more!

5 out of 5 stars Buy it!!!.......2002-07-28

I absolutely LOVE this book. If you're a hot springs addict (like I am) you'll never leave home without it. It has remote hot springs with excellent directions, she-she spas, photos and honest descriptions. Clothing optional to "Versace only bathing suits required." It's the only book you'll need for hot springs if you travel on the west coast. It's definately the most thorough one I've come across.

Book Description

This deeply felt memoir is a journey through family history, feminist insight, and Southern mythology. In it a daughter reflects on the complicated and volatile love she and her father shared. Shirley Jean Abbott grew up in Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the 1940s and 50s and was the beloved daughter of Alfred Bemont Abbott, affectionately known as "Hat." Hat wasn't a bookmaker in the obvious sense, even though he allowed Shirley's mother to believe as much while they were dating. Rather, his craft was gambling, and his business was horse racing.

Despite the corruption, which put food on the table and rabbit coats in the closet, Abbott remembers the kind and attentive father who spent nights reading to her. He alone is responsible for opening the door to a world of language and literature for her. And she ran with it. Against her father's wishes, after graduation she headed for New York City. In the end, the girl he had nurtured into an independent and intelligent young woman had outgrown the small town where she grew up. The Bookmaker's Daughter was originally published by Ticknor and Fields in 1992, and was a Book of the Month Club selection.

5 out of 5 stars A heartfelt tale of family bonds thicker than water, stronger than time........2006-10-04

Originally published in 1991, and now featuring a new introduction by award-winning author Shirley Abbott, The Bookmaker's Daughter: A Memory Unbound is the poignant memoir of a daughter remembering her father, growing up in Arkansas in the 30's and 40's. Her father survived the tough times of the depression not through the trade of physically making books, but rather through the business of gambling and horse racing. Yet The Bookmaker's Daughter is about books in another way; the father who once read to his young daughter and stimulated her imagination saw her outgrow her small home town and head for New York City after graduation, against his wishes. A heartfelt tale of family bonds thicker than water, stronger than time.

5 out of 5 stars a well-written memoir.......2006-09-15

I read her story when it was first published, also lost it after lending it to a friend. Since I didn't remember the author or title, it was left as a memory of a book I enjoyed both for the story AND the word-craft. I would compare the satisfaction of reading this bood with that of "Daughters and Rebels" (Also published as Hons and Rebels) by Jessica Mitford. Suddenly, last night, the title popped into my head, and here I am, ordering it for myself and several friends and daughters...

5 out of 5 stars I Am Also A bookmakers' Daughter.......2006-07-23

I read this book several years ago.I lent it to a co-worker who moved away from this area.Unfortunately,we lost touch & I lost my book.Recently,I purchased a new copy for myself & am just now getting around to rereading it.I strongly identify with the writer, even though our lives are very different. Her love for her father touches me deeply.I will always prefer to read a biography or autobiography to fiction any day.

I found this book to be very helpful. It was beautifully written and illustrated! I now have a good idea of where I would like to go to visit and am greatful for the information that was contained in this book

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2004-08-19

I'm a hot springs enthusiast, and this book happens to be one of my favorites. It has beautiful color photographs of hot tubs and pools, and describes the nicest and most 'developed' hot springs to visit in the state. I have already been to two of the places mentioned in the book, and my favorite, so far, is Sycamore Hot Springs in San Luis Obispo. I also plan to visit Glen Ivy Hot Springs by the end of this summer, which is also in the book. Book is reasonably priced, and it is well worth it. I own several books on hot springs and this is the only one that actually has color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best sources on Japanese Onsen.......2006-03-25

After reading almost every book that is out there on Japanese onsen, I always come back to this one. It's a very concise collection of the "true and traditional" Japanese onsen ryokan. It is for anyone who seeks a traditional experience of what onsen used to be before modernisation set in. His selection stays away from the modern, overpriced, and ugly. Of course you have to be willing to do the extra work to find these onsen, but what the other review says that these are "impossible" to find places, is simply not true, you just have to be willing to look at a map. The book also includes one. Some onsen are in fact very close to Tokyo. My only negative: the rating system is a bit confusing. Overall I highly recommend this book. It's a jem.

3 out of 5 stars Tried and ... true?.......2004-07-02

My wife and I used this guide to plan several onsen trips during my ten years in Japan. It is well written and fairly accurate but at times somewhat misleading. Some of the springs have closed their doors since the book was first published while others have gone into gentle decay... That said, there are some real gems among the recommended onsens and half the fun is getting there...

1 out of 5 stars Good luck finding any of these places.......2004-05-19

"Hidden" is the opperative word here. Unless you're a backpacker with lots of time to take local buses AND are able to speak Japanese, I don't think your average tourist could find any of these places. They seemed really off the beaten track, many in the mountains or up in northern Japan.
The book (I had the 1995 edition) didn't even have a good map of the country! I found the organization very confusing with little guidence as to good hot springs visits outside the major tourist cities.
A British friend and hot spring enthusiast who spent six months in Japan also said this book was too difficult to use.
If you're a backpacker get the Lonely Planet and if you can afford a few $300 nights in an Onsen (it's worth it), get the Price book "Classic Japanese Inns.
If you actually live in Japan, with a car and some language skills, you might like this book.

5 out of 5 stars Full of 'Hidden' treasures.......2000-06-10

I say hidden as books in English on traditional Japanese hot springs (onsens) are rare. Neff is a real traditioalist at heart and refuses to recommend any onsen that has tried to fit in with the modern city-driven development of Japan. His enthusiasm for finding peaceful, beautiful locations, with onsens set in natural locations knows no bounds! Locations given in the book live up to their expectations. This is certainly the best onsen guide showing a side of Japan that has resisted change, and will hopefully continue to do so - see it before it does!

Whether you're a practicing balneologist (one who seeks the healing properties of natural hot springs) or just an occasional dipper, this book steers you toward the natural baths from Surprise Valley in Northern California to the Mexico/California border. By the looks of the overview map, there may be more hot springs than casinos in Nevada, with warm waters to suit both your style and desire for adventure. Steamboat Hot Springs, 11 miles south of Reno, provides visiting gamblers with a resort-style respite, in contrast to the primitive Gold Strike Hot Spring, found in a narrow valley near the Colorado River. This spring requires a 4-mile round-trip hike and some boulder scrambling "with substantial drop-offs"; the hot waterfalls and canyon views are reportedly worth the effort. Names such as "Crab Cooker," "Dirty Socks," and "Terminal Geyser," combined with tempting black-and-white photos, make you want to grab a towel and head west.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1YSMB6ZYXFYYN Matt. C. Bischoff has clearly and concisely listed all the great hidden and publicly known hot springs in Nevada and California. It's a great regional hotsprings guide.

3 out of 5 stars Good but could be better.......2007-04-05

I found this book to be generally pretty useful. My only real issue is that there are quite a few hot spring gems that I'm aware of in CA and NV that aren't featured in this book. I did a recent tour of the Black Rock Desert area in Nevada and I passed several spectacular hot springs that weren't listed in the book. I have also backpacked in to some hot springs in the southern CA area that weren't described.

If you're looking at doing a hot spring tour in NV and CA it might be worth looking into getting some other guide books (in addition to this one) or doing more research online or elsewhere. Once again this book did do a great job of describing in great detail how to get to some very out of the way places, but there are other springs that are well worth exploring that aren't mentioned.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide To Hot Springs.......2006-10-25

There have been many guides covering this subject in the past but this one is really the benchmark. Matt Bischoff includes interesting history, and geology notes for his subjects. I have visited a few of his springs listed in the book and found his descriptions to be complete and factual. His maps area really good too, as anyone who has searched for a hot spring just based on someone's verbal directions knows, they can be darn hard to find. Good job, Matt!

5 out of 5 stars So Helpful!.......2005-10-19

This guide is a great, very detailed instruction book that takes you to the best hot springs around. It lays out detailed directions on how to locate these springs, even down to physical landmarks, and exact distance. Without this type of direction springs like the one near Santa Barbara I would have NEVER found. I really appreciated the fact they tell you the current staus of the spring, if it has been renovated, or is in disrepair, it saves a trip to one that is too rundown to go to. Pay attention to the temperature of the springs also, they give you exact numbers on every spot, and some are too hot to swim in.

2 out of 5 stars Not So Hot.......2003-10-01

Very bland and writing without soul or true appreciation for the environment. Directions poor. Not worth your money. Prefer Gersh's Hot Springs book.

    4 out of 5 stars Best yet!.......2006-11-28

I've bought several hot springs books and this is the best yet! I do agree with the reviewer who said that most of what she says leans towards "over exuberant"; such as we might not rate say Hot Sulpher Springs as "one of Colorado's lovliest destination spas", the history and education is worth buying the book alone! Her separation into area of the state and the map in front locating each spring is very helpful! I would recommend buying this book!

    4 out of 5 stars Colorado's Hot Springs.......2006-11-10

This book was very useful on a recent trip to Colorado. The descriptions are accurate. It is also very helpful to have the clothing required/optional/none as part of the descriptions. The directions for reaching each of the hot springs is accurate and helpful.

Deborah George has written a fairly comprehensive guidebook detailing most of the hot springs of Colorado. She gives in-depth history of the springs and interesting facts. _Colorado hot springs_ Entries should be approached with care; George has fallen into a guidebook trap of only saying good things in her book. From her glowing descriptions of each spring, it is very hard to separate the great springs from the mediocre ones. The few negative things she has to say are vastly outweighed by the positive thus making the entries far from unbiased. Of course, everyone has favorites and is keen to embellish a bit, but every spring in Colorado is George's favorite.
George's book also lacks reliable directions and locations. While this isn't usually a problem for developed hot springs, the undeveloped springs have proved a bit harder to find. The entry for Penny Springs has quite good directions up until the last moment, advising Hot Springers to watch for a "well used turnout [with] a very small `C.R. 11' sign." Locating the `well used' turnout proved to be quite a challenge requiring three laps up and down the road and another guide book. Upon closer inspection, the C.R 11 sign appears to no longer exist. This type of experience is typical of George's directions.
Deborah George provides history, folklore and some interesting facts concerning Colorado's hot springs, but don't rely on her opinion of what is good because to her they're all great.

4 out of 5 stars Useful Guide to NW Hot Springs.......2004-10-28

This is a useful guide to the NW's hot springs with maps, pictures, and descriptions of facilities. I was a little disappointed that it focused so much on established and well-known hot springs, as I was looking more for off-the-beaten path options. As most of the hot springs in the book are in Oregon, it will definitely be more helpful for a resident of or traveler to Oregon versus Washington.

3 out of 5 stars Gets out of date...fast.......2007-08-30

As with any travel book - they tend to get dated quickly. This book is great for the commercial hot springs, but watch out on all the ones which require off-road or trail travel - google them first before going.
Several in BC were simply not where they should have been.
GPS coordinates would have been helpfull to include.

3 out of 5 stars Ok, Equal to what you can Google.......2007-08-24

I didn't think this book provided any more information than what can be found on the internet. I would not buy it again if I had the chance.

    5 out of 5 stars Good Guide.......2006-03-02

This book good guide for people who like travel to interesting, fanny pleases. Actually you can found same information in the WEB but for that you will lost a lot of time and will not be sour you found all of them or not

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to "Mr Hot Springs".......2004-08-05

We all remember Jayson Loam who created the original guides to the hot springs back in the 70s and 80s. Even then he was so spring chicken, but he kept a hale and happy outlook on life based on his habit of immersing himself in the beautiful waters of America's hot springs (and wells). Now that Jayson has passed on to his happy reward--he died about ten years ago, at a great age--the torch has been passed on to a new generation of hot springs watchers and dippers, and Marjorie Gersh-Young has updated Loam's findings with some new material (lots of it) on her own. It's great and so are the photographs that illustrate every location.

My only dispute is, I don't see why Puerto Rico is in the book, it is a great state (or whatever it is) but it is not in the Northwest by any means! I forget what Jayson Loam had to say about including Puerto Rico among the Northwest region (if any). But in general, Gersh-Young does a splendid job of compiling and sharing the healthful habit of hot springs with a wildly enthusiastic crowd. Did you know that the Native Americans believed that hot springs provide "Big Medicine" direct from the Great Spirit? That's only one of a thousand charming facts you'll learn from this new edition of Loam's magnificent classic reference work. It's a bargain at any price!

4 out of 5 stars Cool guide to hot springs.......2000-04-29

Photos make this book more valuable than any list of hot springs. Cool Trails recommends this guide for hikers who want to relax in a hot spring at the end of a long hike. Many of the hot springs in the northwest are developed to some degree, and very few of the wild springs are far enough from a road to be considered "hikes." Still, most are located in areas rich in trail hiking opportunities. Covers AK, BC, AB, WA, MT, OR, ID, WY and some other areas of the US.
