Book Description
The beautiful and fey--as they say in the Old Country--Nuala Anne McGrail uses her psychic abilities to help solve mysteries. But even she will admit with a smile that she couldn't do it without Dermot Michael Coyne, her devoted admirer and self-proclaimed "spear carrier."Now both living in Chicago, their unique courtship is once again interrupted by one of Nuala's "spells." On a quiet street on the South Shore, she is overwhelmed by the screaming of thousands of dying men--Confederate soldiers held as prisoners of war.Soon the pair are caught up in a Civil War controversy, and an all-too-present-day mystery involving a sophisticated gang of art thieves, corrupt politicians, and international terrorists. But Dermot is cheerfully resigned, for as he well knows, life with Nuala will never be simple. After all, she's like Irish lace--"thin and delicate and pretty, and just a little bit complicated."
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2006-05-30
I have always enjoyed Andrew Greeley's books, but I was disappointed in this one. I have not read the first book in the series, and I probably won't. Usually Greeley tells a story well. In this one, he contorts the storyline by spewing far too much unrealistic and personally felt verbage about politics. I feel he lets his political views poison the storyline. I also agree that the two main characters are a little too perfect. It is hard to develop empathy for them.
Father Greeley does it again.......2005-05-04
What a wonderful story. I love all Andrew Greeley's Irish (Nuala Anne McGrail) books. She makes you proud to be a woman.
Simple and non-memorable.......2004-08-28
While this book was written in a simple and easy to read fashion, it was not memorable or particularly engaging. I never actually connected with any of the characters. Nuala was too perfect and Dermot was too stupid. I found the language idiosyncratic and the plot trite and boring. I never got into the book; I was always checking to see if I was close to the end. I would recommend this book to someone who does not like stories that are too complicated or clever.
Lore... and good reading........2001-09-02
Well, IRISH LACE surprised me. I liked it quite a bit, in fact. I don't think I will dig up the others in the series, but this one worked really well.
I have always enjoyed Nancy Drew mysteries - no, this wasn't exactly one, but a very similar formula: beautiful, talented girl, jocular fellow, layers of mystery... this threw in some erotica and mysticism...but otherwise -
I mostly appreciated learning a little history at the same time. Greeley did a nice job of illuminating a little of the Civil War's ugly side - and telling a story at the same time.
I even ran a few of the expressions by Pat - and he confirmed them - he also filled me in on some of the names of IRA folks...
It was clever and fun.
Intriguing.......2000-01-25
I personally enjoyed this book very much.It used a fresh outlook on Irish folklore by setting it in modern America. The characters were deep enough to be real, but not so deep as to appear overly plotted. It also displayed a suprising amount of true "Irish humor",something, in my opinion rather diffucult to do. The author by using these approuches created a realistic, fasinating and perhaps most importantly a truly enjoyable book!

Absolutely Wonderful!.......2005-06-18
This book (pronounced Clo-ness) has lots of historical information from people who actually made Irish lace during the potato famine. Then it goes into the patterns and stitches with very easy to follow instructions and diagrams. I have recommended this book to everyone who asks me about Irish crocheted lace.

Customer Reviews:
beautiful patterns.......2003-08-14
they are beautiful patterns, but not what i was looking for. Im not found of making bedspreads from thread [ tho there is no denying their beauty!] or even lace to sew on dresses, hang on shelf ends etc. I was thinking / hoping there would have been more doilies and baby items in this booklet. It's pretty good anyways, just not my favorite.
Great Patterns for Intermediate to Advanced Crocheters.......2001-12-16
Lots of Irish crochet doily patterns! Irish crochet is an intermediate to advanced technique of crocheting. It is very tedious and time consuming, yet the results are stunning! This book has easy to follow written out instructions. Most of these designs may take some time to master, but you'll definitely end up with an heirloom treasure. Rita Weiss and Dover always have outstanding crochet patterns as well as other needlecraft books. Put them on your top 5 best sellers!

Great for beginning your Irish Crochet adventure.......2007-08-02
This is a great book, it has easy to follow instructions and is put together in such a way that by the end of the book you can put together some wonderful works.
very good book on irish crochet.......2006-04-15
Although this book has very few pages I find it to be very informing about Irish crochet. And at a good price. The instructions might be confusing for a beginner as another reviewer has mentioned but with some effort and patience you can get results.

Lovely Reproduction.......2005-12-06
I am a huge collector of the older patterns and this happens to be one of them. Buy this one to use and make some of your own heirlooms that can be passed down from generation to generation, the pictures and instructions are excellent.
to complicated for me.......2003-08-14
I have to confess, I love crocheting, but altho the items in this booklet are beautiful the directions are time consuming and a bit more complicated than I like. I crochet for pleasure, im not a pro, so Im just not up to these patterns!

Song of Erin #2: Ashes and Lace
Customer Reviews:
At last, another quintessential BJHoff historical!.......1999-11-19
This sequel to Cloth Of Heaven is worth the wait. Well thought out plot, compelling spiritual depth. Jack Kane is one of BJ's strongest, most well-layered heroes, and I particularly appreciated those layers. Two scenes stand out, both a testament to this fine writer's incomparable skill with character and words--the scene when Jack confronts Terese about her baby, showing his darkness, and the fire scene, showing his redemption. Nobody does it better than BJHoff. This book reflects the skill of a genuine craftsman of words, a writer with heart and soul. I'll read anything she writes, no matter how long before it appears in print.
Another Great Read!.......1999-10-06
If only B J Hoff could write faster! But at long last, I read this sequel to Cloth of Heaven, and it was great! Her characters always reach out and grab you by the throat! And what an ending! A real surprise, and a breathtaking one, too.
What's next, B J?
Expect the unexpected.......1999-10-05
I can't tell how excited I was to finally get to read the long awaited book two in B.J. Hoff's Song of Erin series. I don't want to sound negative but it wasn't my cup of tea. I absolutely loved Cloth of Heaven but the sequel just wasn't what I expected. If you are anxious to find out more about Brady and Terese, then this isn't your cup of tea either. The two never meet again in the book at all. The book is filled with Jack and Samantha's lives, so if you enjoyed that then you'll definitly love it. The book was well written and I have to commend Hoff for once again, stretching all boundaries and allowing the readers to expect the unexpected.

Book Description
Between 1802 and 1902, over 2000 Irish emigrants, mainly Catholics from Ulster, relocated to northern Delaware, where they found steady employment in E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company's black powder yards. Explosives work was dangerous, but the du Ponts, perhaps best described as sincere paternalists, provided a host of benefits, including assisted migration, free or low-cost housing, interest-bearing savings accounts, and widows' pensions. As a result, the Irish remained loyal to their employers, convinced by their everyday experiences that their interests and the du Ponts' were one and the same.
These generally peaceable labor relations underscore Mulrooney's innovative exploration of cultural identity. Employing a wide array of sources, she turns away from worksite and instead turns to the domestic sphere as, "broadly defined to include everything from labor relations, emigration patterns, religious beliefs, and gender roles to attitudes about housing, consumer goods, yards, and foodways." Her research reveals that powder mill families asserted their distinctive ethno-religious heritage at the same time as they embraced what U.S. capitalism had to offer.

Thank goodness for reprints. Learn how to create an heirloom quality piece of crochet for your family. Directions and illustrations are easy to understand and follow.
One of my favorite needlework books!.......2000-02-28
Finding this book was a revelation to me! This unabridged reprint of the Priscilla Irish Crochet Book first published in 1909 by The Priscilla Publishing Company in Boston is filled with exquisite Irish crochet such as is rarely seen or made today. Leaf through this book and you will be astounded by the breathtaking delicacy and intricacy of which a hook and a thread is capable! Three-dimensional roses, shamrocks, thistles, passion flowers, daisies, blackberries, grapevines, chysantheums, and myriad other motifs and floral pendants, with instructions for making up -- using the various background and edge stitches -- into a variety of beautiful items, from edgings, insertions, medallions, and doilies to stunning masterpieces such as purses, collars, cuffs, portrait hats, blouses, gowns, and coats. With crochet hooks in sizes ranging from 13 through 16 and cotton threads in sizes 40 up to 100, I have made a many of the projects in this book, all absolutely spectacular!
Terrific book on an almost lost art.......1999-02-27
This book opened a whole new dimension of crochet for me. --Beautiful, mind-boggling stuff. The directions are quite accurate although rather different from modern crochet books. Loved it!! This book was 1st published in 1907, and raised rather interesting questions, like :how big was an Irish match 93 years ago? You are supposed to wrap cord around 1 to 4 matches. My answer: best to add one to their count- I use 3 Chinese wooden skewers for their 2 matches!!

fun and romantic story.......2006-10-13
I liked this story because it isn;t your typical romance. There is some character mix-ups, with the two girls switching identities at the beginning of the book. I liked the heroine a lot, and the romance was great. It also links with the other McCarthy book Irish Rogue, so remember all the characters in this book before you go to read Irish Rogue, because they are in that book too. I really think it's interesting when authors link their characters like that throughout a series of books.
Characters were not very well developed.......2006-06-19
From the back cover:
Love born of a lie...
Eager to escape a bleak future in famine-ridden Ireland, Kathleen Maguire accompanies her cousin, Meara, to America, where her fiance awaits. But on the voyage, Meara falls in love with another, leaving Kathleen to tell Rian Quaid that his bride to be has jilted him. Desperate and nearly destitute, Kathleen undertakes a bold deception by letting Rian believe that she is Meara. Now, as she loses her heart to handsome, honorable Rian, Kathleen realizes that the truth may steal her happiness away.
Truth bred in the heart...
Rian's bitter experience with his father's second marriage has made him none-too-eager to wed--especially not to a woman betrother to him in childhood. And yet, when he meets his lovely "intended" at the port of Baltimore, he is startled by his own desire. With each passing day, his passion for her grows, until all he can see is the perfect bliss he has found in her arms. But when his beloved new wife's secret is exposed--will it shatter their blossoming love?
And my review:
After reading all the rave reviews of this book, I was surprised to be let down by IRISH LACE. I just didn't see anything all that special about it.
First, the good points. The author was able to paint a vivid picture with a light hand, instead of becoming overly wordy. This is a difficult task for an author, to be able to place the reader in her story without overdescribing everything, so I applaud McCarthy for her good work. The historical background was also well done without having it overtake the book. The main focus of the book was always the romance, which is just as it should be. I was never left feeling like I'd opened a history textbook. There were no jarring point-of-view switches, which is also another rare find.
I also liked that the author was able to give the author a feel for the Irish accent without letting it become too thick. You could hear the accent without having to translate a bunch of phonetic word fragments--thank goodness.
However, I felt that the characters were very poorly sketched. The author only touched on them instead of truly developing them. I didn't know any more about what drove them, or what their hopes, fear or desires were by the middle of the book then I'd gleaned in the first ten pages. Characters should grow into well-rounded people that you know and love. That just didn't happen here. Ultimately, it is the characters that make or break a romance novel, and they didn't make IRISH LACE into a keeper or a can't-put-it-down book.
Also, most of this book was written from the heroine's point-of-view, which meant that I felt very distanced from the hero. I had no feel of who he was or what made him tick. I need to know why the heroine should fall in love with him, and I need more of a reason than that he's handsome.
Not a terrible book, but in no way was IRISH LACE a five-star read. It was just an average book, fine if you want something light and breezy. I would recommend this as a "borrow from the library book", but not one for buying.
Perfect!.......2001-08-02
Meara Kathleen Dunne was sent from Ireland, by her father, to her fiancé in America. Since childhood she and Rian Quaid had been betrothed. Her cousin, Kathleen Mary Maguire, (both named after the same relative) accompanied her. During the voyage, Meara fell in love with Robert. They convinced Kathleen to meet Rian once the ship had docked, give him the dowry, and explain that Meara would be marrying another. Meara and Robert would wait for Kathleen to do so and then they would all leave together and live happily ever after. However, once Kathleen began talking to Rian, Meara and Robert deserted her!
When Kathleen realized she had been abandoned and was alone in a strange country, she feared telling Rian the news she had. She decided to let him believe she was his fiancé for a short while. She never expected to fall in love with him though.
Rian was not eager to wed after witnessing his father's second marriage. However, he felt responsible for his fiancé since he never wrote to cancel their betrothal. Meara had apparently changed over the years and seemed entirely different than he remembered. The more he was with her, the more he decided marriage would not be bad at all. However, his property (called Green Lawns) was experiencing several unfortunate accidents. Someone was out to ruin Rian.
Then Meara reappeared to once again shatter Kathleen's happiness. Life with Robert was awful and Meara needed the money she had told Kathleen to give to Rian. Even though Kathleen had yet to tell her new husband that she was not who he had thought, she had already turned the money over to Rian.
**** This one is terrific! I never really cared for Meara though. Such a snob! But that just proved to me that this author, Candace McCarthy, was talented! I could not help but fall in love with many of the co-characters. They seemed so full of life, so real! The book is very well written and flows smoothly. Perfect for Summer reading! ****

Emotionally intense -- Highly recommended.......2001-06-18
As children, their grandfathers betroth Meara Kathleen Dunne and Rian Quaid. As a teen, Meara vows she will not wed Rian, despite her family's wishes. When the Irish famine endangers her well being, however, she's sent to America to wed Rian in the company of her cousin, Kathleen Mary Maguire. Meara falls in love with Robert Widham on the voyage and convinces her cousin to meet Rian and relay the message that the marriage is off and give him the dowry anyway.
Afraid of being cast adrift without any family, Meara complies with her cousin's wishes and meets Rian at the dock. She doesn't immediately explain her identity, wishing a more private forum for such a revelation. Rian believes him to be his fiancée, as they've not seen one another in ten years, and takes her to his home Green Lawn. Determined to make herself useful, Kathleen hopes to persuade Rian to allow her a home there once she reveals the truth. The longer they are together, however, the more difficult circumstances and the heart make it to tell Rian the truth. As she marries this man she's fallen in love with, Kathleen fears that Rian will one day learn the truth of her identity.
IRISH LACE weaves a rich historical tale spanning the Ireland and America in a moving tale of mistaken identity. With richly developed characterization and a vividly realized plot, Candace McCarthy weaves a finely crafted historical novel with a hint of danger as attacks on the hero come from a mysterious source. The emotional intensity never lets up, making IRISH LACE highly recommended.

I love Irish stories and I think that Ms McCarthy brings us the best. I read her "Irish Linen" and loved it. This one is even better. The history is well done, not heavily applied as in some historicals. But the book gives you the feeling of being there. It begins during the Irish famine and continues in America. I think anyone who loves historical romances would enjoy "Irish Lace."
