Unable to live with his murderous rage, Flint moved back to his mother's clan, divorcing Sora and leaving her forever.

5 out of 5 stars Mystery Romance.......2007-06-04

Kathleen has done a superb job of adding a fictional story to the great historical cultures of the Native Americans. She has shown courage in being willing to add the romantic element. I look forward to reading her next work as it will use the power of sex to heal. The high chieftess trully exudes the stresses of leadership.

4 out of 5 stars Speechless...well, almost........2007-01-09

I have read almost all of the books that Kathleen had co-written with her husband and loved each one. I expected nothing less from this book. I began reading it and was very pleased with the story. It has a lot of erotic moments that some may interpret as a cheap romance novel, but it is so much more. If you are prude in that department you may not be interested in this reading. However, sex is a very personal act shared between two people. It was important I think for the readers to understand the graphic details that were shared between the people to further develop the story and understand the characters better. The story twisted me in so many different directions and the end just cuts you off. I hate that. I really do. It is like watching your favorite t.v. show just to have the climax cut you off with big bold letters that read, "TO BE CONT..." However, the sequel has already been published so I understand and hope (cross my fingers) that all the answers that I seek will reveal itself in the next book. Knowing that I could continue the story kept me from taking away a few stars when rating this book. Kathleen is a great author and I will continue to follow her work.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Read this Erotic Native American Mystery Unless You Plan on Reading Its Sequels.......2006-07-12

IT SLEEPS IN ME by Kathleen O'Neal Gear has officially peeved me off. The book kept me interested all the way until the very end. In fact, it built serious momentum at the end, making me more and more excited to see how all the intrigue and mystery will pay off when ... cliffhanger. Thanks a freaking lot. Now I have wait for the next book to come out (in paperback) to find out what happens. I am NOT pleased.

The story itself is convoluted, but fascinating. Basically, Sora is a Native American Chieftess (circa 1400s) who was divorced and remarried. Just as political problems force her clan into considering war, she learns that her ex-husband, Flint, has died. He was the love of her life, and now she begins to believe that his spirit is moving from body to body in an effort to stay on earth with her.

But is it really his spirit? Or is there a greater conspiracy going on, one to overthrow Sora from her position as chieftess?

The story itself is rich with detail about Native American life in the 1400s. There's also a lot of sex in this novel. Not romantic type, either. The story especially delves into the various sex toys these people used to enhance intimacy. It's not everyone's cup of tea.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the historical/anthropological detail and the intrigue/mystery. I just wish the book had a real conclusion instead of an advertisement for the next book. So annoying. Apparently, it's part of a trilogy that includes IT SLEEPS IN ME, IT WAKES IN ME, and IT DREAMS IN ME.

5 out of 5 stars A nice mystery book........2006-03-06

It sleeps in me was one of the best books that Katheel O'Neal Gear has written. It even gives you a twist at the end of the book. Ill be getting the 2nd book in the triogy when it come out.

4 out of 5 stars Great debut from Kathleen O'Gear!.......2005-11-05

When Sora, chieftess of the Black Falcon Nation, is faced with warring clans, duplicitous friends, and baffling seizures, she feels that she is trapped in a labyrinth of deceit. Skinner, a friend of her ex-husband, Flint, comes to Sora with a shocking message: Flint is dead, but his shadow soul lives within Skinner, and he must tell Sora Flint's last words. When Chief Blue Bow of the enemy Loon Nation asks Sora for warriors to help his clan attacks another, Sora suspects treachery despite the promise of jade bounty. As she seeks counsel from her second husband, Rockfish, and best friend, Wink, Sora is shocked that they are eager to accept Blue Bow's proposal. Suspicious of their motives and tortured by the lure of Flint's shadow soul, Sora learns that she can trust no one and that her life is in danger.

Throughout out this book I was mesmerized with the culture and the beliefs of this tribe. I use to read-up a lot on Native Americans in my college years because the culture fascinated me so much.

While reading this I kept trying to predict part of the ending but came up short every time I turn to a new chapter, there were a couple of shocking twists that had me going.
Gear did a great job keeping up with the story line throughout the entire book. It did break my heart during the end of the story. With this debut in a new series, Gear, the beloved coauthor of many Native American prehistoric novels (e.g., People of the Owl), spins her magic again in a saga peppered with murder, intrigue, and erotic love scenes.

This book was intriguing and entertaining. I highly recommend this book. Great work Kathleen Gear.

Every little bunny should have a brother as kind and thoughtful as Willa's big brother Willoughby. When Willa can't sleep because she is so afraid of bad dreams, her brother leans down from the top bunk to encourage his little sister to think happy thoughts... about her chicken slippers, her blue-and-white jumpsuit, and tomorrow's anticipated pleasures. That very night, Willoughby takes Willa on a piggy-back ride around the cozy tree house to check on her breakfast food, her toys in their basket, and the quiet world sleeping outside, all the while explaining in soft, soothing tones how everything in their snug little world is waiting for the next morning to unfold. He tells her that the morning is waiting "For grass to grow, flowers to bloom, and leaves to flutter. For clouds to float, wind to blow, and sun to shine. For birds to fly, bees to buzz, and ducks to quack." "'That's a lot of happy things,' said Willa." Joyce Dunbar knows just how to set the scene for sleep, and Debi Gliori's charming, expressive bunnies are very, very cute. (Click to see a sample spread. 3 out of 5 stars How 'bout happier?.......2007-07-04

I, as a non-artist, can think of much more inspiring reasons for a small child to be happy at bedtime. Disappointing and shallow.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable book for siblings.......2006-04-30

My kids love this book, especially when I replace the bunnies names with my kids' names. It's an adorable story about how an older sibling makes an effort to comfort his little sister and she returns the love. Very sweet with "cuddly" illustrations. Perfect for bedtime!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite children's book.......2006-04-24

I found this book breathtakingly beautiful. I love the way it is written as well as the illustrations. It is written and illustrated by women which is a plus. It is a pleasure to give this book as a gift to little ones.

3 out of 5 stars Charming Illustrations.......2005-09-27

The illustrations in this book are charming. The text itself wasn't quite what I was expecting. More about why you need to go to sleep than about "Happy thoughts to sleep/dream by" Still, the pictures are beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite Bedtime Book.......2005-09-17

This is the best bedtime story. It's so sweet how the older brother comforts his little sister's fear of bad dreams. Beautifully illustrated and teaches your child to be empathetic and comforting.

Book Description

If you sense someone’s watching you from afar, or if you feel a shadow other than your own at your back, I might as well pack it up and call it a day.

It’s a job that makes a killing. Efficient, professional, and without apology, Lily Mansfield is a hired assassin, working as a contract agent for the CIA. Her targets are the powerful and corrupt, those who can’t be touched by the law.

Now, after nineteen years of service, Lily has been drawn into a dangerous game that hasn’t been sanctioned, seeking vengeance for her own reasons. Each move bolder than the next, she is compromising her superiors, drawing unwanted attention, and endangering her very life. Though stress and shock have made her feel somewhat invincible and a little cocky, Lily knows that she too can be taken out in an instant. And if it’s her time, so be it. She intends to go down fighting.

A CIA agent himself, Lucas Swain recognizes the signs of trauma in the line of fire. His orders: either bring her in or bring her down. Yet he too is drawn into the game with Lily Mansfield, dancing on a tightrope as he tries to avoid a major international incident while still battling a tenacious foe who is dogging their every step. Keeping laser focus on the task at hand while vigilantly watching her back, Mansfield never sees the lethal peril that lies directly in her path . . . and how loyalty has a price.

Chock-full of the intrigue, breathless action, and sensuality that have made Linda Howard the master of romantic suspense, Kiss Me While I Sleep is a daring thriller of passion, sudden twists, and richly imagined characters who live and breathe in readers’ hearts. It is the most gripping and complex novel of Linda Howard’s career.

5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2007-09-24

I have recently become addicted to Linda Howards novels and i have loved every one i've acquired.

5 out of 5 stars It'll make you think, if nothing else!.......2007-08-08

We've all seen Alias, with kick-butt heroine Sidney and dreamy hero Vaughan; great show. Now meet the most unusual heroine ever: Lily Mansfield, assassin! Yes, you read that right, assassin, contracted by the CIA at eighteen to get rid of evil, corrupt targets. At one stage in the book she mentions she threw up for days after her first hit. Who can blame her? As the years go on Lily gets tougher, harder, faster, moving like smoke as she completes her assignments. She's now in her thirties, very clever, a master of disguise and possessor of several aliases plus a hidden stash of money. When she suddenly goes out on her own and assassinates the man responsible for killing her best friends and their daughter, the CIA decide to eliminate her as a rogue agent. (The scene where she takes this guy out is chillingly hair-raising, by the way, totally mesmerizing to read as her need for revenge unrolls.) The CIA send agent Lucas Swain after her, a lean-hipped, laid-back, easy-talkin', gorgeous, sexy, totally yummy cute guy, with a zest for life in total contrast to his deadly job. He finds her in the middle of a gun battle in France. She's outside the facility where a deadly avian flu is being deliberately cultivated, side by side with the antidote the company plans to `sell', and so make millions. Of course, the sons of the man she assassinated also want to kill her, and they own the above facility. Things get very murky in terms of motive and deed and greed. Swain doesn't exactly advertise he's there to bring Lily in, dead or alive. In true Linda Howard form, Swain and Lily fall in love: unexpectedly, hard and fast. Each with their own agenda, each hiding secrets and lies, each totally hot for the other. In the end the double twist will make you gasp - we didn't see it coming. Oh, just take the afternoon off and read the book. It pushes romance further than ever before, with a bold take-no-prisoners approach and fragile moral boundaries that might shock you.

2 out of 5 stars Not one of my favorites.......2007-01-26

I have to say I wasn't able to get that interested in Kiss Me While I sleep. It began good, but quickly lost momentum. I found that nearly all the characters were repetitive in how they reached the same conclusions, and was really rather boring to read the same information over again with a different character. There wasn't even that big of a difference in their viewpoints, despite the fact that two were CIA agents (Lily a rouge), and the other a supposed terrorist or mafia type villain. Another notch against this novel is that the two characters, Lily and Lucas begin their relationship with a lie. Which wouldn't be entirely bad, but to have it continue through out the entire novel when the two characters are trying to build a supposed relationship? Then only to have Lily, a character built to resemble a strong, intelligent woman to fall back into the arms of a man she never truly new and who lied to her through out their entire relationship? It had me rolling my eyes and I felt that the characters deserved better than that. In all, I wasn't impressed with this novel. What could they possibly build their relationshp on? Past lies?
I love most of Linda Howard books, but for some reason, the spy/government conspiracy novels just don't pair with her other romantic/suspense novels. In all, read it, but take it from a library because to me, this book isn't worth buying.

Favorite recommendations: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Open Season, Heart of Fire and Mr. Perfect.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will be Sorry!!!!!!.......2007-01-05

I really wish I had taken notice of all the negative reviews of this book. This was certainly one of Howard's worst efforts. I can't even describe just how bad this book was. The plot completely unbelievable and just plain silly. How simple vengeance turned into an act of "saving the world," I will never figure out. The characters were completely underdeveloped. There's no "spark" between the hero and heroine. They go from acquaintances to lovers in the blink of an eye. Even worse, the love scenes, (always one of Howard's best efforts)were completely drab. I also figured out who the "bad guy" was mid-story. It was just that predictable.
I have a shelf full of Howard's books, both hardback and softcover. This will not be one of them. As a matter of fact, I'm listing it for sale on Amazon right now!!!If you really want to read this story (and what true Howard fan wouldn't??)please, please, please check it out at your library. That way, you won't feel cheated out of of 20+ bucks.

I noticed that Howard has another book coming out later this year. That will be two books in one year, where she usually does one. Could feeling rushed and overwhelmed by deadlines be the reason she released such "trash" to her loyal fans? Who knows?

5 out of 5 stars Linda Howard has you going right up till the end!!.......2006-12-22

I thought this was a great book that keeps you guessing till the very end. I still ended up surprised by the ending and very pleased. The book is a quick read and keeps you interested all the way through. I have enjoyed all of her books and am always looking for her next one out.

4 out of 5 stars Good mystery, empathetic heroine.......1997-11-11

While on a spy mission in Lebanon eleven years ago, Helen Bradley's spouse died during a terrorist act.For the next decade, Helen, a former police officer stayed single. However, now she is happily remarried, lives in Oregon, and loves her job as a writer of travelogues. While working on her latest book, Helen receives a call from an Irene Kincaid, asking for her help. Irene believes that her spouse, the renowned gerontologist, Dr. Paul Kincaid, was murdered because of his work on slowing down the aging process.

When Irene is shot to death, Helen decides to investigate by setting herself up as a target. She feels that someone at Kincaid Labs has secrets they want kept buried. To uncover them, Helen checks into Edgewood Manor, one of the top convalescent centers in the nation even as her son pleads with her not to become involved. Inside the idyll home, Helen learns that once she is there, she might not leave the place alive.

The first novel, NOW I LAY ME DOWN TO SLEEP, in the Helen Bradley mysteries is an interesting thriller that is highlighted by an interesting lead protagonist. Even though, the story line is relatively simplistic, to Patricia H. Rushford's credit, it remains a gripping suspense laden tale. This series will be well liked by readers of mystery.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!.......2003-07-17

I have read the entire Lurlene Mcdaniel series, and the 'Clearwater Crossing' series. Lurlene Mcdaniel's books were such an inspiration, and it is an awesome series, as soon as you lift up the book, you can never put it back down. It's almost impossible to expect to read one of her books, and drop the series alltogether. This is for all ages, mostly teens, and helps out more than ever. She is an inspiring writer, and many writers should more often be like her, and writing books that do effect teens, and can help them.

5 out of 5 stars Another poignant novel from Ms. Daniel.......2002-12-19

Carrie Blake is a fifteen-year-old who was diagnosed with leukemia three years ago. At that time, she also had to deal with her parents' divorce. She meets Keith Gardner, an athlete at her high school, who also had cancer, Hodgkin's disease. Both are in the hospital support group. They are both assigned to work on the picnic for cancer patients. As they get to know one another, both become great friends. Keith has a wonderful family who treats Carrie very kindly, while Carrie's parents are both seeing other people. But not everything is perfect for the Gardners. Soon, Keith's cancer returns, and there is nothing that can be done. Keith's family, and Carrie, have to learn how to live without him. This is a really great story, with plenty of emotion, as all of Lurlene McDaniel's books are.

I LIKE ALL OF LURLENE MCDANIEL BOOKS AND I ESPECIALLY LIKE THIS ONE. IT IS TRUE THAT PARENTS WHO DON'T GET ALONG OR DIVORCE DO EFFECT US. CARRIE HAD MANY FAMILY ISSUES AND THEN SHE MET KEITH WHO HAS A ALMOST PERFECT FAMILY. SHE REALLY STRUGGLES BECAUSE HER DAD AND MOM DOESN'T GET ALONG EVEN THOUGH THEIR DIVORVCE. THEY BLAME EACH OTHER AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THEY BARLEY EVER WENT TO THE HOSPITAL TO SEE HER WHEN CARRIE WAS SICK. PARENTS ARE PARENTS AND THEIR SUPPOSE TO LOVE THEIR CHILD/CHILDREN. AREN'T THEY THE ONE WHO BROUGHT US INTO THIS WORLD. SO WHY DON'T THEY TAKE CARE OF US AND LOVE US....
