Book Description
A GRIPPING STORY OF IMPERIAL AMBITION, SWASHBUCKLING ADVENTURE, AND THE KAISER'S OWN JIHAD.
An acclaimed historian tells, for the first time, the full story of the conspiracy between the Germans and the Turks to unleash a Muslim holy war against the British in India and the Russians in the Caucasus. Drawing on recently opened intelligence files and rare personal accounts, Peter Hopkirk
skillfully reconstructs the Kaiser's bold plan and describes the exploits of the secret agents on both sides-disguised variously as archaeologists, traders, and circus performers-as they sought to foment or foil the uprising and determine the outcome of World War I.

Another Hopkirk Treasure.......2007-09-05
You can count on Peter Hopkirk to deliver fascinating accounts of the lands that served as the arena for The Great Game, and this is no exception. In this well-done volume, Hopkirk tells the tales of intrigue launched at the outset of WWI, mostly aimed at the destruction of the British Empire. While the world was focused on the carnage in Europe, a lesser-known war was raging in Central Asia, where the players were the dying Ottoman Empire, the newly emergent Bolsheviks plus Persian and Caucasian forces and, of course, the British. Hopkirk records these events with a journalists eye toward telling a compelling story. So much of today's world was influenced by the events Hopkirk describes. This is a valuable book which rounds out our knowledge of a most turbulent time.
The fire that nearly engulfed the world.......2006-12-15
Hopkirk delivers a wonderful book in his look at how the British Empire was forced to respond to Germany's attempts to destroy its empire. The book is the most terrifying installment of the series as Hopkirk describes Germany's efforts to raise a holy war in the Middle East. The efforts of the British to stop it are impressive and once again show the triumph and finesse of the British imperial system. This is another fascinating book that looks at how the British empire lasted throughout the turbulent years of world war 1. As always the book is very well written and impressively displayed.
An Okay-to-Good Book.......2006-03-23
THE GREAT GAME was a great book. Suspenseful, interesting, etc.
LIKE HIDDEN FIRE, in comparison, doesn't really come close to comparing to THE GREAT GAME.
LIKE HIDDEN FIRE has its moments where you're flipping pages in anticipation of the next page, but in a book with nearly 500 pages, there aren't enough moments like this and the existing moments don't last long enough.
Can't quite really put my finger on any specific issue. The overall storytelling sort of wanders from one area or time into another one, and you weren't quite sure what the connection was. Other accounts are told, only to seem as if there was really no other point to include it.
Don't get me wrong. This is not a bad book, per se. If you haven't read either book yet, read THE GREAT GAME before this one (aside from the fact that THE GRAT GAME historically precedes LIKE HIDDEN FIRE).
Why they call it World War.......2005-01-15
So many aspects of our present world and the dilemmas that plague us now grew out of the backrooms, the backwoods and the backwaters of the world. Even today, Central Asia is a mystery to most people in the US. "Like Hidden Fire" is a great place to start to learn how complex the world is and why the peoples of the Middle East and Central Asia might have just a little mistrust of the West and its motives.
The story is the down and dirty of the German efforts to unseat the British Empire leading up to and during the First World War. It includes efforts to create a Holy War against the British and champion the Kaiser as a "Defender of the Faith" (the Faith in question being Islam, of course).
The trail takes us from intrigue to counter intrigue through Turkey, Iran and into Central Asia where then, as today, the Westerners are more pawns in the local struggles than vice versa.
This is totally relevent to today both in understanding the local issues as well as how shallow the West is in dealing with the people and culture of the Middle East and Central Asia.
The work is as vast and complex as the region and the people it covers. Set some time aside to read it and don't be surprised if you find yourself exploring the people, places and other works that are cited in the book.

Great Game Intrigue in the Middle East during WWI.......2004-07-26
For those of you who are familiar with Hopkirk's other books, this book is yet another well written narrative on an obscure subject.
Hopkirk does a wonderful job of bringing to life key personnel who were involved in Great Game intrigue in the Middle East during WWI. Figures such as Von Hentig, Niedermeyer, Wassmuss, Teague-Jones, Noel, and MacDonnel to name a few, are brought to life and given their rightful spot in the plot-counterplot dramas that unfolded behind the scenes in Mesopotomia, Persia, Afghanistan and Russian/Soviet Central Asia.
I would have liked to see a bit more development on Wassmuss vis-a-vis Mesopotamia, and I think any reader of this would love to see in the future the true life story of Reginald Teague-Jones.
However, the scope of this book is so large, that any further elaboration on any of these subjects would have made the book a multi-volume set.
A great read for anyone who is interested in any of the other theaters of WWI. Excellent bibliography (as usual for Hopkirk)...highly recommended.

Disappointing.......2007-06-30
This book was extremely disappointing. The heroine is a weak female, so full of virtue and tears it makes you want to puke. And the hero is a stubborn jackass of a man until the very last 3 pages of the 350+ page novel. I love Sandra Brown and have to say that if you're into history this book really does a good job then. She really researched the lifestyles of people back in 1800s Texas. I just was nonplussed with the characters. While she had good development and background for each one, I found them to be lacking in their personalities. Particularly Lauren. Now, I like the idea of a proper miss being thrust into life in Texas via a marriage of convenience as much as the next person; but, Lauren is extremely helpless and does nothing but cry, whine, and simper (and dare I say quiver and tremble?) the entire book. She really got on my nerves--she was so meek! Jared of course is the brash single male full-of-himself with way too much ego tortured type. That should have made for a good story, the two of them being thrown together. I suppose they complimented each other, but I will not be reading this book again. I just hate it when the heroine is so soft, timid, yielding, and passive, and the man of course is supposed to be drawn to that but still fight it. Personally, I don't think that kind of thing would be attractive at all. I don't understand why Sandra can't make a heroine who is self-sufficient and in charge, and is then made equal partners with her mate. And what's with the height difference? Why does Lauren have to be so petite and short compared to Jared's hugeness. Her helplessness is disgusting. Even when everyone's lives are in danger she can't seem to focus on a course of action and just stands there waiting for the inevitable rescue. It was lame. She was lame. The reason the book gets 2 stars is for Sandra's effort with the research and development. Basically, it sucked.
Great book!.......2007-05-06
After she runs from a possible scandal and religious foster parents who don't believe her Lauren goes to seek out a long time family friend, Ben. He recently had visited the family and extended an invitation to young Lauren to see Texas, a land only seen in her dreams. It's beautiful, and rough. It's the perfect place to start over. The only thing that isn't perfect is that her host,Ben...
What is Lauren to do now? The son of the family doesn't want her there, but he needs her. Jared, slowly discovers that his contempt for Lauren is unfounded and turns into..LOVE? LUST? It couldn't be..he knows what this tempest is all about..getting ahead and taking advantage. He's been around Texas for a while, he knows what women want, what they're like, what they're after. All Texas women want the same thing...but Lauren isn't from Texas!
This was my first Sandra Brown book and although there were some confusing parts and parts that seemed to happen out of no where it was truly a good read. Pick it up if you are interested in historical romances and want a nice mindless read for the weekend.
The best romance book EVER - when's the movie?.......2007-03-08
I read this book many years ago, and it is worn out from reading it over and over. I was so glad to find this on Amazon! You will not be disappointed if you purchase this book. I am now on my way to buy all of Sandra's books! Sandra, if you are reading this, thank you!!!
excellent...........2006-07-07
This book was my first "historical romance" and it is the one that turned me onto them, I have read several now and none of them have compared to this one. There is nothing else to say but this book is amazing and I have read it 3 times now! I am sure I will be reading it several more. If you haven't read it then you are missing a good one!!

I dont know about anyone else but I really really liked this story. This is one of my favorite books by Brown, and trust me I have read many of her books. I am so glad I bought this book. All the characters in this book are so likeable. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. You will all love it. I know I did.

Book Description
There are Hidden Ways built into the structure of
existence -- linking the New World and the
Newer . . . dating back to a time before time.
When he brought college friends Maggie and Ian home to North Dakota, Torrie Thorsen anticipated a carefree vacation -- not werewolves, Norse gods and inconceivable worlds. But the Thorsen destiny leads them all to where the family's history began -- through secret portals into a place of legend and peril. For here, where the blade of Torrie's father once loyally served the House of the Sky, son and father both must suffer for ancient transgressions. And with war clouds gathering above the Middle Dominion, an unlikely champion will raise his sword in defense of captive friends . . . to prevent the fiery coming of the End of All Days.

Impressive.......2000-06-05
Rosenberg starts another 'dual' series here, but with enough of a different spin than the Guardians of the Flame saga that it doesn't feel like he's done it all before. I'm always impressed with the way he gives the reader insight into the history of his characters without being overwhelming. A great mixture of action and insight, the 'what' and the 'why' of what's going on in the story.
And as usual with Rosenberg, the story is excellent. Thorian the Younger and Ian Silverstein are both worthy young heroes, and happily enough carry some baggage with them that actually affects them both positively and negatively throughout the story.
The Keepers series, in my estimation, doesn't quite measure up to _D'Shai_ and _Hour of the Octopus_, but it's definitely in the same ballpark. Solid, entertaining writing, definitely recommended for fans of Rosenberg or fantasy in general.
A Excellent New Story from Joel Rosenberg.......2000-03-21
A trip home from college with friends turns into a nightmare with attacking werewolves and a journey to a mythical land..Once again Joel Rosenberg creates characters that you feel you know right down to their soul..Once you read this one you'll have to have the next 2 in the series & they won't dissapoint you..
A new and interesting take on that fantasy "otherworld".......1999-02-16
Rosenberg does an excellent job wafting us right into his interesting "otherworld" where fertility godesses live in their retirement and Odin runs a ferry. He identifies a little too much with Ian, I think, and spends just a little too much time on small details, but then again the details add to the richness of the setting, so long as they don't bog you down. All in all, an excellent read, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series. I hope he can keep up the freshness of the ideas and vitality of the characters better in this series than he did in Guardians of the Flame.
This is a fun book!.......1997-04-03
Being of fan of Rosenberg for some time, I was impressed bythis latests offering. It is a well crafted book that takes the oldcliche of real world people being thrusted into a fantasy world and adds a lot of surprises! The characters felt real and three-dimensional. I have to agree with the eariler comment about Ian Silverstein because he was a really well developed, interesting character. Looking forward to the second book The Silver Stone.
well-written fantasy with Norse influences.......1996-08-01
Ready for some fencing and Norse gods in your fantasy? This
book delivers. Torrie Thorsen, college student, brings his
friends home for vacation to rural Minnesota. Rosenberg
shows the uniqueness of the family such as the fencing studio
in the basement, Uncle Hosea's creations, and the mysterious
gold which is the basis of the family fortune. His father's
past as the professional duelist of the House of Flame invades
the present as werewolves attack through a portal from
another world.
The beginning of the book is the strongest because of the
descriptions of people in rural Minnesota. The character
development of Ian Silverstein (Torrie's friend) is very well
done. The fantasy world is well-constructed with lots of
conflict. The special guest appearances by figures from Norse
mythology are fun. I wish there had been more development
of the female characters. The second book in the series is
The Silver Stone.

Book Description
Tom Harpur is one of the wisest spiritual guides in contemporary culture. Prayer: The Hidden Fire reveals the power and universality of prayer. It is invaluable for anyone wishing to learn more about prayer, or wanting to deepen their spiritual roots. -- LARRY DOSSEY, MD, Author of Healing Words and Prayer is Good Medicine
Who Prays These Days? According to recent national polls, almost all of us do. The practice of prayer is shared by an overwhelming majority across diverse beliefs and backgrounds. But, with the ongoing decline in the membership of institutional religion, it's apparent that many people don't go to church to pray. Many of us now turn to literature for spiritual guidance. Prayer: The Hidden Fire will help you reconnect with your inner need for prayer. Prayers are extremely personal, an intimate conversation coming from a deep human desire to communicate with God. But too many of us are locked into a one- dimensional model of prayer. How do you pray with your whole heart if you are still relying on the prayers of early childhood that begin "Now I lay me down to sleep," or the official, formally-structured prayers of institutional religion? In Prayer: The Hidden Fire, Tom Harpur invites readers to view prayer as an intimate conversation with a personal God, and to use the same language as they would use with a lover or a best friend. Harpur brings the broad theological perspective of prayer to the personal level by exploring the deep yearning that calls one to prayer. He includes suggestions which will help both the fully initiated and the bewildered novice experience more practically and deeply the spiritual benefits of prayer. He also includes, for personal adaptation, a chapter of prayers written for his own use. This is a truly down-to-earth, simple yet honest - from the heart and from the gut - book on prayer that will help you discover what prayer means to you.

o.k but not her best.......2007-03-09
I enjoyed the characters. The beginning half is a bit tiresome with a certain characters self doubt, but after the halfway point the story takes off. Truly enjoyable ending.
great characters but to wordy........2002-01-24
Well I liked this book to a point. The characters of Eden, the young, innocent, prim and proper lady, and Ram, the Highland Laird, who is fighting demons from his past are wonderful. Betina Krahn describes them beautifully. He must marry her to gain his inheritance and even though he is strongly attracted to her, as she is to him, he finds that his demons are coming between them. Her family is very enjoyable and add to the humor that is in this book. The only real complaint I have about this book was that it was a bit too wordy. It took me days and days to read. I would have liked it more if there had been a bit more action between the h/h. I just got bored with this book.
Nice romance but a bit shallow.......2001-08-16
I like Betina Krahnýs novel, but after having read several of them they become slightly shallow. O.K. thereýs a lot of humour in it and the sex scenes are really steamy and tender, too ( a mixture thatý very rare in common romance novels) but I somehow miss a certain sort of development of the characters and in the love story Krahn tells. Of course Eden is very charming and incredible beautiful and Ramsay is incredibly handsome, too and they seem to feel (of course against their will) attracted to each other from the very start but somehow thereýs missing something. Thereýs hardly any dialogue between the heroes and when thereýs dialogue it is about sex. The hero begs for sex and the heroine refuses it at first and then the heroine begs for sex and the hero refuses it and that is that! Whereýs the good old romance where people are attracted because of their wit, their loyalty, their inner strength? Whereýs the good old and far more realistic love story where after a growing attraction that took some while the hero touches the heroineýs hand and kisses it, the way men did approach women at that time? Itýs totally unbelievable that in todayýs history romance novels the heroine is sexually so aroused by her first French kiss that she is willing to give her virginity to the hero who she has just recently met. Well-bred maidenýs passions had to be aroused in a far more subtle and romantic way. And I think itýs far more erotic when the passion between the lovers is built up slowly and convincingly and when itýs not only based on physical attraction.
witty, delightful and romantic...a real winner!.......2000-02-13
What a wonderful read! I absolutely devoured this book! I have been a fan of Ms. Krahn's work for some time...but the HIDDEN FIRES had a different special touch and a uniqie stand among her other novels... The hero and heroine (Ramsay MacLean and Eden Marlow) are mesmerizing together ...so much so that you can actually feel the sparks shoot from pages... Secondary characters are a true treasure... they surprise, delight and infuriate you all the way... Most important of all...this book is very witty...its humour is infectuos! Curl up in front of the fire with this romance...and let yourself be swept away...you won't be dissapointed!
A hilarious & romantic novel........1998-06-28
Eden Marlow was less than delighted when Scotsman Ramsay MacLean offered her the position of mistress & proceeded to show him by bashing him soundly. Ramsay has met his match! Eden is one of my favorite heroines, she has a backbone!! And Ramsay is a lovable scoundrel. This novel also has interesting secondary characters.

can I have some more please?.......2004-12-23
I greatly enjoyed this series not just this book. Her depth and understanding of human nature and social politics really shines through. I had to read one right after the other... I devoured the series and felt bad when I realized there was no more to eat!
She may not like the comparison but these to me this series is a strange and beautiful blending in my head of Dune and Andre Norton.
Now we just need to see more work from her again!
Excellent read! I have visited this book many times!.......2001-10-19
Katherine is a wonderful wordsmith. In Hidden Fires, she continues to develop the characters and world of Nuala. Silver is a stong, quick witted character with her own sense of honor. She was a Free Trader, and is now the wife of the ruling Atare. They both have worked to build Nuala into a stong world. She and her husband struggle with forces threatening what they have built. I've read Hidden Fires several times, and each time I'm drawn into the history and character of Nuala's culture. I love this book, and the series!
Hidden Fires-3rd in the Nuala Series.......2000-10-05
This book is an excellent adventure. The mine sequence is unusual and has a 3 dimentional quality that makes underground conditions very real. The story does rely heavily on the character development set up in Fires of Nuala and does not seem as intense as the 2 previous stories. Overall...where's the next story about Nuala???
A delight to read.......2000-06-08
I've read and enjoyed this book several times. Most of the story takes place on Nuala, a planet with areas of radiation deadly to all but a few "sini" humans. The story opens many light-years from Nuala. Garth Kristinsson is a young man who has spent 100 years, mostly in frozen sleep between worlds, seeking justice for his parents' death. Garth learns that a woman who formerly worked in partnership with his parents now lives on Nuala, so he heads there. Garth's quest uncovers some unexpected answers, and his quest for revenge gets tangled in a revolution. Silver Atare is the heroine of the book: strong, talented, and very likable. Lots of action and a great ending. I highly recommend the book.

My Favorite Regency.......2006-06-24
Morgan and Deborah are in love but are separated when Deborah is forced to choose between him and her family.
Hidden Fires contains a well-written, fast paced story of young love, lost love, and found love. It's the story of a love that never disappeared.
The hero is a dashing, handsome, true Alpha male. The heroine is smart, caring and brave. The secondary characters are entertaining.
An action-packed ending takes care of all the characters to my satisfaction.
I've read some of the author's other books and enjoyed them immensely but Hidden Fires has always been my favorite. I've always wondered about the author and looked for news about her. However, I found nothing. It seems she stopped writing years ago.
In the meantime, I tightly hold on to my copy of this out-of-print book and re-read it every once in a while. I love Hidden Fires. It's always been an enjoyable read for me.
By the way, there are two different covers for this book. My favorite is the second image shared in the 'customer images' section. It depicts the couple against the background of a manor house and ships at sea. This is an accurate depiction of the story setting.

hidden? more like hopeless.......2004-10-24
Deborah Stanton and Morgan Randall were in love. They decided to be married and live wherever Morgan's military career took him. Then, Deborah's mother died. Deborah's older sister, Gertrude, was about to be married and refused to take in their younger sister, Alice. Deborah's father was a sailor, gone to sea for years at a time. He opposed the marriage and threatened to have it annulled.
Deborah did not want Alice raised by a housekeeper and with all the opposition, she told Morgan they would have to wait, at least until Alice became an adult. Morgan was enraged and left to return to his regiment.
Seven years later, Morgan returns. Having inherited a title, he is now rich Lord Treverly. Deborah has become a tired, unpaid nursemaid for Gertrude's children while the beautiful Alice is being groomed for a spectacular marriage.
Morgan barely recognizes Deborah. Gertrude encourages a match between Morgan and Alice while Deborah fades into the background. Deborah's new friend Lady Horatia Torrington almost succeeds in bringing out some assertiveness in Deborah but, no, she remains full of self doubt and hopeless love for Morgan.
A long book made interminably longer by the pathetic heroine's hopeless longing for the uncaring hero.
